Before she was Queen: Remembering Elizabeth’s 1951 visit to campus

Matt Reeder - September 8, 2022

An extra day off from classes during the fall term likely sounds appealing to many busy university students — and that's what Dal pupils received in the fall of 1951 thanks to a special regal visitor.

Just months before she was crowned Queen Elizabeth II following the death of her father, King George VI, Princess Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, dropped by Dalhousie's campus on November 8 as part of their 33-day cross-Canada tour that year.

The university cancelled all classes to mark the occasion.

How many hands Her Royal Highness shook during the visit remains unclear, but that of then-Dalhousie President Alexander Enoch Kerr was most certainly among the first. As was that of Lieutenant-Colonel K. C. Laurie, then chair of Dalhousie's Board of Governors. Both men were on hand to welcome the princess to campus, along with naval cadets and officers in training clad in uniform.

On Thursday (Sept. 8), more than 70 years after the rainy-day visit to Dal, Britain's longest-serving monarch passed away at the age of 96 .

"I am saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We have lowered Dalhousie’s flags in her honour ," said Dal President and Vice-Chancellor Deep Saini.

While the Royal Couple's visit to Dal lasted a mere five minutes, large crowds turned out in the wet weather to greet them with cheers. As the Dalhousie Gazette reported in the following morning's edition, "Heavy rain did not make any difference to the size of the crowds. From the University gates on University Avenue to the gates on South Street, students and others were lined up three and four deep . . . to catch a glimpse of the Prince and Princess."

Below, we share some archival images of the visit, including photographs of the princess signing the Dal guest book in the Macdonald Memorial Library.

Being from Halifax, I find these photos fascinating on many levels! By the way, it’s a damp day here today, but not as wet as it appears to have been for Her Majesty and His Royal Highness.

A new bench and tree in the Halifax Public Gardens are commemorating Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee.

Dozens gathered at the event Saturday morning organized by the local branch of the Monarchist League of Canada and the Friends of the Public Gardens.

The Platinum Jubilee celebrated Queen Elizabeth's 70th anniversary on the throne. Celebrations were held around the world in 2022.

The Halifax ceremony was scheduled before the Queen's death on Thursday. She was 96.

The initiative was inspired by the "Plant a Tree for the Jubilee" initiative in the United Kingdom.

A woman in a green hat and dress looks upwards.

"There is definitely some sad here today," Carole Thompson with the Monarchist League of Canada said to the crowd.

Thompson said when work started on the event last December the hope was it would be "a good, happy, joyous celebration of an incredible milestone in the reign of a beloved monarch."

Several people attended the event for the opportunity to show their respect to the late sovereign.

"She's probably one of the most confident women I've ever read about or heard about," said Lucine Toomey, who described herself as "a bit of a monarchist," but more a fan of the queen.

"She was a very beautiful lady. To me, she was like quiet steel. She was shining, strong and calm," Toomey told CBC News.

Toomey had on a fascinator at the event that she said she first wore when Prince Charles visited the Public Gardens in 2014.

"He stopped and shook hands with me," she said. "I'm sure part of the reason he did was that I had the fascinator on."

The bench and the planting site of the tree are both near the Queen Elizabeth II Walkway that opened in 2018. A second tree will be planted at the northwest corner of the Halifax Commons.

The bench is on the Grande Alleé, close to both south entrances of the walkway. Two purple fountain weeping beech trees are being planted: one at the Public Gardens and one at the Commons.

"We wanted to place a dedicated garden bench in this beautiful place to bring peace to people and to encourage quiet reflection," Carole Thompson said at the event.

The Victoria Jubilee Fountain in the Public Gardens was restored in 2012 in honour of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.
