Kwik Trip sees increase in dairy purchases throughout pandemic

In the adapting culture that came with COVID-19, those working among all links of the food supply chain saw changes that impacted business and revenue. For Kwik Trip, this brought promising news for dairy farmers.

The series of convenience stores noted a substantial increase in dairy purchases in the past three months as more customers were stuck at home, according to John McHugh, director of corporate communications at Kwik Trip.

McHugh pointed to an interesting trend that showed a shift in consumer choices. Rather than smaller, to-go containers of milk, gallons and half gallons of milk were leaving store shelves.

“Part of that is because when people are on the go or the driving work, they grab their little container of milk, but if they’re confined at home for a couple of days or a week, they’ll buy the full gallon,” McHugh said.

Sales of butter and eggs were also on the rise, but McHugh was not sure if that could be attributed to more people cooking at home, or because of a promotion that coincided with the increase. Kwik Trip did have to put a limit on butter at one point because of how quickly it was being sold.

Comfort foods such as ice cream also ranked highly on the list. Kwik Trip makes its own ice cream by taking the cream from milk once it comes into the facility. McHugh noted the brand is continuously trying to create new varieties of the frozen treat and other dairy products to increase demand.

“As we well know, national daily dairy consumption has been going down,” McHugh said. “We certainly want to make sure that we can continue as a strong presence, especially here in Wisconsin, supporting our farmers, so anything that we can do to increase those sales, were doing that.”

Kwik Trip milk is sourced from farmers within a 75-mile radius of La Crosse. The milk is processed within 24 hours.

“That’s part of our business model,” McHugh said. “If we can get it from farm to table and the quickest manner possible, that’s good for the consumer. It’s good for the quality.”

With its own distribution fleet, stores receive a fresh shipment of products every day. Because of volume, some will receive two shipments.

Another new market for Kwik Trip milk is in local school districts. Whitehall and Arcadia schools announced a partnership establishing Kwik Trip as the official supplier of its milk.

“Some of our students really rely on food programs from the school, so when that got shut down, we wanted to make sure that our young people in Wisconsin still have nutritious meals available, specifically access to fresh dairy,” McHugh said. “That was an excellent partnership not only for our students but at the same time, for our farmers.”

McHugh acknowledged the fact that dairy farmers were forced to dump milk during the pandemic because of a lack of demand with schools, restaurants, and foodservice industries closed.

“We were able to take more of that dairy product into our facility, process that, and turn around and make it accessible to school districts,” McHugh said. He added there are other similar partnerships in the works. To celebrate June Dairy Month, Kwik Trip will be sending out more than 270,000 coupons for milk. Most of those will be given to local food banks. In some cases, the Wisconsin Electric Cooperative Association and State Farm insurance agencies in Wisconsin will make free milk coupons available for their customers. “June was always a huge month for us in terms of donations for all those events,” McHugh said. “The more and more that people start to get removed from were their milk actually comes from, the more important those events are to educate, especially our young people, about how hard our farmers work. These are people that can’t take a vacation, or they don’t take a day off because the cows have to be milked.”

Kwik Trip stores are open but with social distancing recommendations because of COVID-19. The average person is in the store for three minutes, so McHugh asked customers to be patient and wait if there is a large number of people in a store.

Is Kwik Trip a good grocery store alternative? For some items, yes. Here's how prices compare

With just over 500 locations throughout the state, Kwik Trip is quickly securing its place as a neighborhood grocery and convenience store.

Beyond its usual gas station fare, the chain is known for its fresh fruit and other staple grocery items. But how do the prices compare to those of a typical grocery store?

Using a list of grocery items we have used in previous grocery price comparison stories, we compared what items we could find at Kwik Trip to those at Walmart and Pick 'n Save , prioritizing store brand prices where possible.

Our full grocery list includes: half a gallon of almond milk, a loaf of whole wheat bread, one pound of bacon, one pound of bananas, one pound of 80/20 ground beef, a four-pack of butter, standard box of Cheerios, standard box of Cheez-Its, a dozen eggs, a five pound bag of flour, canned green beans, 18 ounces of strawberry jam, 18 ounces of peanut butter, a head of iceberg lettuce, a gallon of milk, individual naval oranges, a two-pack of paper towels and a six-pack of toilet paper.

In the past, Triscuits were included in the list, but were not for this story because of a lack of store brand alternatives.

How much have grocery prices increased this year?

Although we are only two months into the new year, talk about grocery prices, more specifically eggs , has been a popular discussion among Wisconsinites.

In a November grocery price comparison story, we looked at the total cost of our shopping basket at Walmart, prioritizing Walmart's store brand, Great Value.

The sum of the list, which included items like whole milk, eggs, bread, bacon, toilet paper and more, totaled $46.05, after removing the cost of Triscuits from the list. This month, that same list totaled $48.48.

While the price of eggs has been a popular topic recently, the cost of a dozen Great Value eggs actually dropped from $3.26 in November to $2.87.

Great Value butter and store brand ground beef were the highest-cost food items on the list, at $4.48 for butter and $4.36 for 80/20 ground beef. The highest priced item on the list overall was the six-pack of toilet paper at $7.92.

In July 2022, we visited Pick 'n Save with the same grocery list to compare the cost of groceries from name brand to their store brands.

The total cost of the store brand items on the list in July 2022 equaled $53.42, minus the price of Triscuits. Visiting the store this year, the total cost of store brand items came to $56.60.

A dozen store brand eggs at Pick 'n Save cost $4.69 and the most expensive item on the list was also a six-pack of toilet paper at $7.49.

For both Walmart and Pick 'n Save, the total cost of the grocery list increased slightly from the previous year by only $2 to $3.

Is Kwik Trip better for convenience or price?

With Kwik Trip's decently sized grocery options, including produce and hot and cold take-home meals, many visit the gas station/convenience store for items they might not want to travel to a full grocery store to get.

The chain carried most of the items on our grocery list, with the exception of oranges, canned green beans, full-sized Cheerios and Cheez-Its. It also offers its own store brand alternatives for majority of the items, besides almond milk, flour, peanut butter and jelly.

With the missing items and name brand alternatives taken into consideration, the cost of our shopping list totaled $50.56.

If you were to visit Walmart for the items that Kwik Trip did not carry, the total would be $55.98.

While this price was less than Pick 'n Save's total, Walmart still holds the cheapest total.

Kwik Trip's eggs were $3.99, and the most expensive item on our list was their store brand bacon at $4.99. While it doesn't offer a six-pack of toilet paper, it does have a four-pack alternative for $3.69. This means you're paying about $0.92 per roll, compared to $1.24 per roll at Pick n' Save and $1.32 per roll at Walmart.

While some of the items were cheaper at Kwik Trip than at the other stores, like butter, ground beef and eggs, other items seemed to be double the price than at a grocery store, like peanut butter, jelly, and almond milk.

Kwik Trip customers might sacrifice the cost of some of these items for the convenience of being nearby one of the many locations. There are exactly 501 Kwik Trip locations throughout the state, meaning many don't have to travel far before they find a store, and many cities have more than one.

When asked about its pricing strategies, Kwik Trip declined to comment.

When Kwik Star entered my life five years ago I never knew I'd become such a faithful shopper for everything from fuel for my vehicle, to bananas for my daily breakfast, to kitchen staples like milk, eggs and butter.  It has been fun to see the growth and expansion of Kwik Stars across Iowa and sharing with family and friends when they get a new store close to them what deals they should look for and what my family's favorite products are.

Kwik Star (known as Kwik Trip in Wisconsin and Minnesota) has just over 700 Kwik Trip/Star stores in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa and will be opening stores in Illinois soon.  So when one of these new convenience stores opens up in your neighborhood you might be wondering where to start, or what all the hype is about?

• Bagged Milk - That's right, get your milk in a bag at Kwik Star and you'll never go back to a carton or plastic jug again.  All of Kwik Star's milk is sourced from dairy farms within a 100 mile radius of their headquarters in La Crosse, Wisconsin, right in the middle of dairy country.  Not only does my family find their milk delicious in flavor, it is also economical.  The half-gallon bags are a cheaper option compared to the jugs and I love how many bags I can stack in my fridge.  Kwik Star also provides pitchers to go with your milk so you can easily pour.  The only downside of bagged milk is that it isn't as easy to drink out of the "jug" ...
• Ice Cream  - You can be sure to find a couple containers of Kwik Star's private-label Nature's Touch ice cream in our freezer at all times.  Our family's favorite flavors currently are Chocolate Dream and Caramel Pecan Turtle.  We also love their seasonal flavors, including Candy Bar in the summer!
• Bananas  - Now you might be wondering why I recommend getting their bananas, but at $0.39 (or less) a pound you can't go wrong!  Plus if you are a Rewards Member (which you should be) you can get a free pound on a regular basis.  *** Bananas made my Kwik Star Stocking Stuffer List! • Pizza  - We love Kwik Star's Kitchen Cravings Take-And-Bake Pizzas as well as their frozen Pothole Pizza.  Both pizzas have lots of cheese and meat on them.  We love their Pepperoni & Sausage Traditional Take-And-Bake, BBQ Chicken Thin Crust Take-And-Bake and Pothole Meat Sweats.
• Donuts  - Glazers, Dunkers, Cake, Long Johns - you can't go wrong with any of them.  Plus they are always priced right and often have great deals.  Fun fact: the Kwikery Bakery in La Crosse, Wisconsin produces over 2 Million donuts every week!  ***Make an Easy Strawberry Shortcake with Kwik Star Donuts - get the recipe here !
• Eggs  - Kwik Star Eggs are always priced right so be sure to check them out.  I got a dozen this week for $0.99.
• Butter - This is another kitchen staple that I always get at Kwik Star because it's always priced nice.  I got a pound of quartered butter this week for $1.99.
• Honey Wheat Bread  - Kwik Star offers a large variety of bread flavors but our family's personal favorite is their Honey Wheat.  It's a delicious wheat bread with just a touch of honey to sweeten it.
• French Rolls  - Another bread product we love from Kwik Star is their French Rolls.  We use these as small hoagie buns or turn them into garlic bread.  They're just the right size!
• Chicken  - There are many concessions foods we love at Kwik Star but our family's overall favorite is their fried chicken.  Each store hand-breads and fries the chicken in store so you can always count on fresh, crunchy and juicy chicken anytime you stop.

Do they all have E85 ethanol? I see the one in Fort Dodge does. Now I will add it to my list to refuel as well as grab lunch or donuts.

White candy, yogurt-coated pretzels, snack mix, cookies from Target, Walmart recalled

A variety of frosted and coated pretzels, popcorn snack mixes and cookies sold at Walmart, Target, Dollar General and other stores were recalled over a salmonella risk.

Palmer Candy Company recalled its “White Coated Confectionary Items” because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Those items were sold to stores and wholesale distributors nationwide.

They include the brands Freshness Guaranteed, Palmer, Sweet Smiles, Snackin’ With The Crew, Casey’s, Sconza Chocolates, Favorite Day Bakery, Sunny Select, Urge! and Kwik Trip Inc.

The items were sold nationwide in Walmart, HyVee, Target and Dollar General and to distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The individual products include bags, pouches and tubs of items like peanut butter snack mix, patriotic coated pretzel twists and popcorn, yogurt-covered pretzels and white fudgy cookies.

Why are coated pretzels, snack mixes recalled.

According to the FDA, Palmer Candy was notified by its liquid coating supplier that an ingredient from one of their suppliers was potentially contaminated with salmonella.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The company and the FDA continue to investigate, and production of the product was suspended as the probe unfolds.

What is salmonella?

Salmonella is "an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis," according to the FDA.
