We have a three day Chester based tour open for September Wednesday 6th to Friday 8th. The first day will be a visit to a Chester brewer and historic pubs, the second a day in vibrant Liverpool and the third day a trip to  Shropshire to visit a unique brewery followed by several wonderfully atmospheric pubs in beautiful Shrewsbury.  You can join the whole three day tour with accommodation in Chester or for individual days. I have had the pleasure of going on 2 beer tours with Steve Hobman from Beer Tours UK. The first was to North Wales and Liverpool in 2013, and the second was to the Peak District and Manchester in 2018. 

On each tour we visited both rural and city local breweries and pubs, some were classic examples from the victorian era and early 20th century. we sampled both traditional british real ales as well as some newer, craft beer styles. , steve not only has a fantastic knowledge of british beer, but he ensures we learnt some of the history and culture of the places we visited. , the accommodation on both holidays was in delightful pubs, and the tours were well planned and paced. , as a british expat visiting the uk it was a great way of seeing parts of britain i had never seen and enjoying the best of british beer. , mark davies, all about cask ale.

The Brewery

We are cuckoo brewers, using others brewery equipment to make Chesters Beer. We also have a small brewing facility for test batches in Handbridge, Chester. Handbridge is where all our dreams started. And where brewing our local beers for Chester started.

I still dream. I dream about building something great. Something like Chester had in its world famous city centre until 1971 when, sadly, the Chester Northgate Brewery (pictured) made way for the dull-as-ditchwater Centurion House.

As we come out of lockdown measures I think we must be patient. Patient to see whether restrictions with the potential to ruin nights out remain, or whether we really are beating this, and that we can get back on the town. Its our town, and whatever happens we will be there with you to make the most of it 

We are brewing our beers at other brewers facilities now. This gives us access to the best brewing equipment that we can afford. And let's us make the fabulous beers that we do on a consistent basis. We work only with independent craft brewers and we keep our finished beers cool to make sure they reach you in consistently great condition.

We've been brewing and drinking test batches throughout lockdown to make sure that we can serve you our great beer exactly as you will come to expect it.

Visited for Sunday Lunch and a couple of ales, the pork and beef dinner was very good and the homemade white chocolate cheescake dessert was amazing ! Enjoyed it so much we returned next day for a snack and a drink. We will be returning on our next visit to Chester, if you like a good ale or 3 and some quality food then this is your place. Definitely worth a visit !!

We stayed here for 3 nights and it is in the centre of lovely Chester right near the cathedral so close to everything. It's such a lovely, old, atmospheric place with apparently 3 resident ghosts! The staff were very helpful and the food was good. We asked for a quieter room at the back away from the noise of the street but there was obviously noise from the pub until closing time so take ear plugs if you go to bed early! The room was very clean and tastefully decorated. The only drawback was lack of storage and nowhere to put any belongings in the bathroom. What is needed is a small chest of drawers in the bedroom and a shelf or cupboard in the bathroom together with a handle or something to hold on to in the shower. Also there is no parking so we parked in Market car park. Apart from that it was a lovely stay.

If you want a fairly traditional menu with food well cooked and plentiful then this fits the bill. . Good service in the restaurant, which is separate from the bar area. We were a party of 6 and everyone was pleased with their selections Beers from the onsite micro brewery were available and a decent wine list that didn't break the bank..

This little gem! Is truly an amazing find.... right in the centre with a real homely feel. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the outside area with provided blankets was lush! I will definitely be returning!! The room was so beautiful felt very spoilt!

Philadelphia Beer History

Philadelphians have embraced beer and beer culture since the very beginning of our nation. After all, this is the birthplace of America, and great ideas have been known to hatch over a pint. Case in point: Local taverns served as vital meeting points during the American Revolution, providing the well-stocked gathering spaces required by Founding Fathers and common colonists alike to birth modern democracy.

Philadelphia would also play a crucial role in the wider maturation of American beercraft. In the mid-19th through the early-20th centuries, more than 90 breweries operated in Philadelphia proper, and another 100 operated in the surrounding areas, making it one of the region’s most stable and essential industries.

The brewery uptick came to an end in 1920, when Prohibition brought on the near-demise of virtually all of Philadelphia’s beer producers, the majority of which remained shuttered beyond the repeal of the “Noble Experiment” in 1933. But the enterprising, independent spirit of the originators never left the fabric of Philadelphia’s civic identity, setting the scene for a serious comeback that began gaining steam in the early 1980s.

Throughout the next 20-plus years, innovative craft breweries proudly reclaimed the region’s reputation by brewing some of the country’s best beer.

2SP Brewing Company

The pride of Delaware County, 2SP Brewing Company has some serious (beer) muscles bolstering its operation, including partner-brewmaster Bob Barrar, who guided Iron Hill’s Media location to dozens of national awards before striking out in 2015. It didn’t take long for Barrar and company to continue racking up hardware — The Russian imperial stout has won three Great American Beer Festival gold medals — on a 20-bbl system in Aston. The tucked-away facility is accompanied by a spic-and-span public tasting room pouring more than 20 of their beers like their signature Delco Lager, special releases, and creative small batches aged in wine and whiskey casks. In 2022, 2SP opened a tap house location in Chadds Ford, offering a dog-friendly outdoor patio, a dozen taps, and a menu of fun bar bites like smash burgers, spent grain biscuits and baked pretzels.

After years of planning, Animated Brewing Co. opened its doors in March 2020 as the first craft brewery in Coatesville. A small menu of bar food complements lagers and West Coast IPAs, many of which reference the founders’ favorite music or inside jokes. Opened in 2019, the brewers at Hatboro’s Artifact Brewing have created a relaxed space for craft beer lovers throughout Montco. After an initial run on a farm at the edge of the Brandywine Battlefield, Artillery Brewing moved into its new “Barracks Taproom” home on the west end of West Chester in 2021. Long-time beer aficionado Michael Crosson began by experimenting with homebrewing in his small apartment kitchen, creating his first concoction named “Bitchin’ Kitten,” after his wife Brigitte’s cat Shadow who once accidentally mistook a White Russian for milk (and did not enjoy the experience). Carbon Copy

When Dock Street Brewing exited its iconic West Philly firehouse in spring 2022, it would have been sacrilege for the space to not continue as a friendly craft beverage space. Enter Carbon Copy , Philly’s first combined brewery and winery that reopened the historic firehouse doors in December of 2022 (with Dock Street co-owner Rosemarie Certo’s blessing). New owners Brendon Boudwin and Kyle Wolak, both formerly of Tired Hands Brewing, updated the space with high-tops, bar seating and tables for 50, plus new large windows letting in the daytime sun and large windows into the brewhouse where the duo brew beers onsite. (The vino is produced at Carbon Copy’s proprietary winery in Kensington.) The taproom offers 18 draft lines for beer, wine and craft cocktails, plus a pub menu of shareables, small plates and a half-dozen varieties of thin-crust wood-fired pizza and several vegetarian options.

A pet project of three longtime friends that blossomed into a full-on West Kensington operation, Fermentery Form doesn’t actually brew on-site. Instead, unfermented beer is created elsewhere and brought in to ferment, blend and age … ergo, fermentery. The results are crisp, refreshing beers executed in the style of Belgian lambics and French farmhouse ales that have garnered a cult following among the city beer cognoscenti. But before you head into this back-alley beer spot (which offers three to four drafts and a selection of 750mL bottles), check if the green light outside is illuminated — that indicates the ’by announcement only ” speakeasy is open. (Alternative option: Just check their social media.) The prohibition-era theatrics are worth the fun for the Belgian-style mixed fermentation and sour beers this team produces.

When Daniel Endicott and Gerard Olson first opened Forest & Main Brewing Company in 2012, they wanted an opportunity to embody that small town, front porch, idyllic feel. “We believe in simplicity, and letting the yeast shine brightest,” says Endicott, who prefers to brew balanced, lower-ABV styles of Belgian and British origin, including darks and bitters poured on cask. Having outgrown their original 19th-century Victorian facility, the Forest & Main team moved on and up to not one, but two new locations in November of 2022. Meyers Brewing Company

Brewery founder Mike Meyers (neither the actor nor the masked character) purchased a dilapidated 1880s carriage house in Fishtown, and rehabbed it to expose old brick and ceiling beams — while replacing and building everything else inside — to create the modern farmhouse design for his Meyers Brewing Company . Kris and Brian Wilson left careers in medicine and tech to convert Quakertown’s nearly century-old Palace Theatre into The Proper Brewing Company (TPBC) in 2015 as part of the Quakertown Revitalization Project. Inside, exposed brick, plaster molding and some original seating preserved from the building’s past life as a vaudeville house commingle with contemporary touches like flat-screens and a sleek industrial draft tower whose jet-black finish matches the 22-seat bar. Where else would you locate a brewery called Publication Brew Works than in the basement of a former newspaper publishing house? That’s what the McIntosh family (including head brewer Clay) created when they opened this Pennsburg brewery in the summer of 2022 inside the circa-1913 building that was home to the Town and Country Newspaper for nearly seven decades. The subterranean reclaimed space inside the historic red brick building features a taproom with eight beers running with interesting creations like the Not Your Grandma’s Cranberry Sauce gose, Effervescense white grape saison, Still Life blackberry-raspberry milkshake IPA and Snow Day mocha golden ale, along with local wine, cocktails and seltzers. The retooled name may be new, but the beer has been beloved in Lansdale for over a decade as the former Round Guys Brewing Company transitions into Round House Kitchen Bar Brewery . In February 2023, the brewery is set to transform into an upscale restaurant and brewpub, while still serving the well-regarded beers they’ve they’ve been pouring since 2012. Burgundy-born restaurateur Loïc Barnieu partnered with brewer Brian McConnell to open Sterling Pig Brewery in 2015, a sleeves-rolled-up, sauce-on-face departure from the French chef’s fancier concepts in Media, Delaware County. Using the term “fermentery” to more accurately describe their process (which requires the beer to sit for up to six months to reach desired maturity level), Succession Fermentory is a singular spot in the greater Philly brew scene. Tannery Run Brew Works

Open since 2019, Tannery Run Brew Works offers an interior setting equal parts gritty and greenery, with exposed brick and corrugated metal and polish woodwork joining a trellis-like ceiling fixture dressed in vines. Inspired by Tannery Run (the waterway) on which it sits, Tannery Run (the brewery) brings variety to its 16 taps through a practice they refer to as split-batching, or “splatch,” brewing, separating one base brew into halves that are then treated and fermented differently to produce two distinct products from a single starting point. Nearly all of the beers on its 14 taps are brewed in this manner, like the Wheaty McWheatface split into a Weiss wheat and German hefeweizen. Houston, we have no problem. The Fuge in Warminster is the site of the U.S. Navy’s now-decommissioned human centrifuge where space race-era astronauts like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin once trained to experience high gravitational forces. Twisted Gingers Brewing Company

Brewer Mark Mayer — who notably does have red hair — opened neighborhood brewery-taproom Twisted Gingers Brewing Company in a 100-year-old tavern space in the Manayunk -Roxborough area in 2019, serving eight drafts complemented by a selection of scratch pizzas made with a special beer-infused “brewhouse dough.” Staples at the brewery (which features a 34-foot beer can mural at its entrance) include Mayer Light, an easy-drinking blonde ale the brewer concocted to wean his father off macro-label light beers, and The Farmhouse saison, based on the ales served in this same location a century ago. The brewery also offers a kiosk at the Flourtown Farmers Market in Montco.

Two Rivers Brewing Company

An award-winning brewpub from Easton’s Two Rivers Brewing Company located inside the Trolley Barn Public Market in Quakertown, the family-friendly Two Rivers Taproom opened its doors in 2019 serving craft beers like the Trolley Barn Lager, the Broad St. Belgian Blonde and the new Phillies-inspired Bedlam at the Bank double-hopped American pilsner on 10 taps. Guests can also enjoy indoor and outdoor seating, live music, and a small menu heavy on burgers and sandwiches.

Urban Village Brewing Company

Slinging pints and pizzas since 2017, Urban Village Brewing Company is the handiwork of Dave Goldman and Tom Revelli who united their passions for brewing and baking to build a cheesy and fermentable paradise in Northern Liberties . Goldman creates boldly flavored beers with an open mind and a creative streak from flagships like the popular Super Villain IPA and Experiment 6.0 light lager to barrel-aged seasonals. Executive chef Chris Davis’ white subway-tiled kitchen is built around scratch cooking, specializing in brick oven pizza, with dough gently leavened from a natural sourdough starter, available in up to 14 varieties.

Van Lieus Brewing Company

The newest addition to the booming craft beer hub of Perkasie in Bucks County is Van Lieus Brewing Company , which opened Halloween weekend 2022. Halfway between Free Will and Mystic Ways Brewing on Walnut Street, the 5-bbl brewery is the creation of father-son founders Jim and Galen Barr, who first started brewing in the basement of their South Jersey farmhouse. The 35-seat tasting room (a former Texaco) serves a variety of brews from their eight taps including rotating selections of New England and West Coast IPAs, ESBs, kölschs, lagers and takes on other British styles plus a nitro tap for Irish stouts and more.

Vault Brewing Company

Housed in the circa-1889 Yardley National Bank, Vault Brewing Company ’s allure comes as much from its speakeasy-in-a-bank-esque design — wrought-iron caging, safety deposit boxes, the original four-ton vault door that opens into the cellar — as its beer. On offer: 10 selections on tap, including session-friendly IPAs, pilsners, wits and a sweet potato ale, along with a kitchen serving a hearty menu of small plates, sandwiches and seven gourmet pizzas straight from their wood-burning oven. And just a five-minute walk south is the brewery’s Vault Smoke House barbecue restaurant and taproom, a full-service satellite location in the Tannery office park, with nine taps and plenty of brisket, smoked sausage, pulled pork and ribs served with Memphis, Alabama and both North and South Carolina-style sauces.

Victory Brewing Company

Founded by childhood friends Ron Barchet and Bill Covaleski who met on a school bus in 1973, Victory Brewing Company began operations in 1996, making for an over-quarter-century of bold beers for drinkers who love big flavors. Victory, one of Philly’s most-impactful brands, distributes nationwide and operates multiple locations across the region including spacious Chester County brewhouse restaurants in Kennett Square , Downingtown and Parkesburg ; the vast indoor-outdoor Victory Beer Hall at XFINITY Live! in the heart of the South Philly Sports Complex ; and an expansive 14,000-square-foot brewery and taproom at 1776 Ben Franklin Parkway in Center City. VK Brewing Co. & Eatery

Originally planned for Glen Mills, veteran-owned VK Brewing Co. & Eatery shifted gears last minute, opening inside the beautiful and historic circa-1796 Ship Inn building in Exton in late 2022. The brewery opened serving from ten taps including their now-flagship Grand Opening West Coast IPA and Haunted Haze hazy IPA. While the ten-bbl brewery sits next-door in a former horse stable, the taproom and restaurant occupy the first floor of the 18th century stone edifice once patronized by George Washington, Andrew Jackson and even Jackie Kennedy. The restaurant offers burgers, pasta dishes and stone-baked pizzas, along with a (coming soon) raw bar as well as an outdoor patio that seats 40.

von C Brewing Co.

The von Czoernig family team at von C Brewing Co. can claim some serious brewing cred as sixth-generation brewers descended from third-great-grandfather Christian Schmidt who first brought lager yeast to Philly from Germany in the 19th century and founded the iconic Christian Schmidt Brewing Company in Northern Liberties in 1860. Each successive generation produced master brewers, culminating in the opening of the 20-barrel, 16,000 square foot von C microbrewery tasting room and beer garden in Norristown, voted “ Best New Brewery in PA ” in 2021 by Breweries in PA readers. The brewery offers 19 taps serving up stouts, pilsners, sours and lagers including the original Pils Legendary Philly Lager, a “very pale” American lager based on their family’s 160 year old recipe.

Warwick Farm Brewing

Situated among the rolling hills of Bucks County , Warwick Farm Brewing — owned by two fathers and their sons — is literally going back to its roots. In 2018, a quintet of college friends banded together to open Well Crafted Beer Company , a versatile brewpub located in a century-old Lansdale building that once housed a Masonic temple. The massive 5,000-square-foot space is evenly split between a brewhouse and modern-industrial restaurant-taproom, offering a 20-tap bar, a bottle shop and a stage for live entertainment. Brewer Rick Solomon and his team have made more than 180 recipes on their seven-barrel system, including flagship beers Nitro Blonde Americano ale with lactose and coffee conditioned on single-origin coffee from Lansdale’s Backyard Beans, Mother Of Perle kölsch and the fruity, fragrant Hop Monger IPA. It’s a real family affair at fast-growing Wissahickon Brewing Company , an award-winning production brewery, tasting room and full-service beer garden opened in East Falls in 2017 by the Gill clan, a dad and his sons and daughter who began by homebrewing in their mother’s kitchen. Residents of King of Prussia were long an underserved local beer enclave until the opening of Workhorse Brewing Company , the brainchild of co-founder Dan Hershberg, a marketing and business veteran of such diverse stops as ESPN, the Phillies and his own popular Northern Liberties’ Philly Phaithful sports T-shirt shop. Launched as a nanobrewery in Bryn Mawr in 2017, buddies Dan Shaw and Bob Bagonis soon decided it was time for their Wrong Crowd Beer Co. brewing operation to grow. Here in Pennsylvania we’ve been brewing beer since the 1600s, so we know a thing or two about what makes a good brew. Today, we produce the second most amount of craft beer in the U.S. and have more than 500 craft breweries all serving up the finest craft brews to pursue the perfect pour.

Use the beer trails below as your guide for discovering some of the best craft beer the state has to offer.

1. Adams County Pour Tour

The Adams County Pour Tour is a self-guided craft beverage trail that pairs history with a series of breweries, wineries, distilleries, meaderies, and cideries throughout rustic Adams County. • Brewery Tour:  Dive into the heart of beer-making with a guided tour of our brewery.  Learn about our process,  ingredients,  and brewing secrets.
• Craft Beer Extravaganza:  Unleash your inner hophead with a selection of our finest craft beers.  We’ll have a wide range of styles and flavors to keep your taste buds dancing.
• Farm-Fresh Feast:  Forget boring snacks!  We’re serving up delicious food made with fresh,  local ingredients.  Think piping hot pizzas straight from our wood-fired oven (gluten-free and vegan options available,  just let us know in advance! ).

Enjoy Weetwood beers and spirits in our taproom

Choose from Weetwood cask and keg beers, the full range of Weetwood spirits, Taunton Cider, wines, soft drinks and great coffee from Adams and Russell.

There’s plenty of seating both inside and outside, free parking, everything is accessible and children and dogs are welcome.

Each Thursday evening from around 5pm food is available from a rotation of visiting local street-food vendors. The first and third Thursday of the month is woodfired pizza from Maximillianos, the second Thursday sees authentic curry from The Curry Den and, our latest addition on the fourth Thursday is Greek gyros from Taka Taka Mam. Sometimes these have to change so follow our socials for updates.

On Fridays and Saturdays we sell delicious Coward’s Pork Pies, perfect with a pint, while stocks last.

Weetwood Events

We host a range of events at Weetwood. Bookings can be made using the link below, places are limited and for over 18s only. Dates for Summer 2024 and beyond will shortly be announced, follow for news on our socials or check back here for more details soon.

Brewery Tour & Beer Tasting

Come and see how your pint is made. Our popular monthly tours are informal, relaxed events which include a guided tour and explanation of our brewing process from end to end, a light buffet and lots of sampling of our range of beers. Guests receive a Weetwood branded tankard to keep and get a £5 voucher which can be redeemed in the Brewery Shop. Event starts from 6.30pm and finishes at 9pm.

Chester County Has Launched An Official Beer Tourism Website

It should come to no surprise that we geek out when others shine a light on Pennsylvania Beer. So when the folks at the Chester County Conference & Visitors Bureau contacted us a few months ago about an idea to launch a Beer Tourism Website, we were all in!

Which is why we are happy to share the news that the Brandywine Valley Brew Scene ( BVBrewScene.com ) website has launched!

The site comes complete with the following resources:

• A map planning tool • A dedicated information page for each craft brewery • An Instagram focused social media tool • Hotel accommodation listings and overnight packages • Beer-themed blog to stay in the know of all things Chester County beer

It is our hope that more counties in Pennsylvania begin putting an emphasis on a  growing and robust industry we all love; craft beer.

Chester: Three Leg Run Brewery competes in World Beer Cup in Las Vegas, wins award

At 'olympics of beer,' 11 medals won by nine virginia breweries.

CHESTER — Three Leg Run Brewery-Winery-Meadery competed in the World Beer Cup recently in Las Vegas. Owners Melissa and Steve Clayton returned winners! At the most prestigious beer competition in the world, the partners in business and life won a silver medal for their "Working An Angle" English Ale.

"Steve and I can't thank our taproom family and fan club enough for all the support for the last two years of success," Melissa posted on Facebook. "I guess we need to get that back on tap."

"One of my first thoughts upon winning - besides being crazy excited and proud - was that I know what I'm brewing as soon as I get home. Of course, when I got home, I realized that I was missing the main hop used in that brew," Steve said.

The hop has been ordered and "Working An Angle" will be brewing soon.

"Even though this beer style is English strong bitter, it's not bitter in flavor at all. It's certainly not in the IPA bitter realm. It's an easy-drinking beer," Steve said.

In the English Ale category, Popoli, Italy-based Mezzopasso's "Red Stone" won a gold medal, and Munster, Indiana-based Three Floyds Brewing's Gumballhead took home the bronze. The World Beer Cup known as "the Olympics of Beer" is held annually in conjunction with the Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America. The Awards Ceremony took place at The Venetian on April 24. As of April 5, the following statistics were available for the 2024 World Beer Cup: 9,300 entries, 50 countries, 2,060 breweries, 110 categories, 290 judges from 37 countries and 300-plus volunteers.

"There were 11 medals won by nine Virginia breweries," Melissa said. "Three Leg Run was the only Central Virginia winner."
