Before you book a flight with Sun Country Airlines, you’ll want to know all about its fee structure and how it operates. To avoid any surprises along the way, follow this step-by-step guide on what to expect when flying with Sun Country Airlines.

What to Know Before You Book with Sun Country Airlines

Sun Country is a unique airline that primarily offers service to/from its main hub in Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) . In recent years, the airline has expanded to include more nonstop flights to/from places like Dallas (DFW) , Las Vegas (LAS) , Nashville (BNA) , and Portland (PDX) . Many routes are only offered on a seasonal basis to fit specific demand patterns in each market — flying Minnesotans to warm weather vacation spots in the winter and filling in for high-demand summer travel in other markets where other airlines lack nonstop service.

Sun Country now operates like an ultra-low-cost carrier in some ways and more like a traditional carrier in other aspects. Similar to Allegiant , Frontier , Spirit , and United (Basic Economy), Sun Country Airlines charges a fee for any bag larger than a 17” x 13” x 9” personal item. This means most travelers will have to pay a little more than the initial price shown just to carry their belongings.

The bag fees are very straight-forward on Sun Country. It’s up to $30 each way for either a carry-on bag (up to 24” x 16” x 11” and 35 lbs.) or the first checked bag (up to 62” linear and 50 lbs.) as long as you pay for your bags during the initial booking. A second checked bag starts at $40 each way. Bag fees are slightly higher if purchased after booking or at the airport. Active members of the U.S. Military receive a free carry-on bag and two free checked bags. And if you hold Sun Country’s credit card, you’ll get 50% off the first pre-purchased bag.

Since most airlines charge similar fees for checked bags these days, travelers who normally always check a bag anyway and only take a small personal item on board should not disregard Sun Country because of bag fees alone. You’ll find the same to be true for seat selection. Sun Country also has a fee to choose a specific seat, but since the major airlines like American , Delta , and United have implemented Basic Economy fares, this is the same for the lowest fares across most U.S. airlines. And you can always avoid paying a seat fee by simply skipping this step and receiving a free seat assignment upon check-in. But you do not get to choose which seat.

With its main hub is in Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) , Sun Country competes heavily with Delta on several routes. Delta often competes on price for most domestic routes but many times Delta will require a roundtrip purchase and a minimum stay for its low fares, whereas Sun Country sells its low fares on one-way flights, and therefore, has no minimum stay. On international routes, Delta is less prone to compete on price and the savings can be significant when flying Sun Country. The same is true for the seasonal routes from Sun Country’s focus cities around the U.S. — it often has fares significantly lower than the competition. To differentiate itself from other ultra-low-cost carriers, Sun Country does include things like inflight entertainment and complimentary beverages.

No change fee policy on sun country airlines.

One major plus for Sun Country Airlines is its no change fee policy and change fee waiver that it offers. Any change made to a Sun Country flight at least 60 days prior to departure does not incur a change fee. And if the price drops this far in advance, you can rebook your flight and receive a travel credit to use within one year from the original date of purchase. Change fees are also very reasonable within 60 days of travel. Changes made between 59-14 days prior to travel, incur a $50 fee each way, and changes made less than 14 days before departure have a $100 fee each way. This is much less than what you’ll find on most other carriers.

For even more peace of mind, you can also add on a change fee waiver to your reservation during the initial booking. This allows you to make one change to your itinerary without incurring a change fee anytime between 59 days and 1 day prior to departure. Changes made 60 days in advance or more are still free and will not count as your one-time waiver. A fare difference may apply, but this can potentially save a lot of money if travel plans change last minute. The cost of the change fee waiver varies depending on route and travel dates. I found this to be as low as $30 after checking a few different routes, but there isn’t a fixed price listed for the change fee waiver option.

Risk of Being Stranded When Flying Sun Country Airlines

Sun Country made headlines in April 2018 when it left passengers stranded in Mexican resort cities Cabo San Lucas (SJD) and Mazatlán (MZT) after it had to cancel its last flights of the season from these two cities due to a blizzard in Minnesota. The airline received a lot of backlash for how it initially handled the situation by simply refunding the passengers for their Sun Country flight and leaving passengers on their own to rebook a (very expensive) flight back home on another airline.

After days of negative press and concerns from politicians, Sun Country decided to reimburse these passengers for any excess costs incurred to get home and stated, in hindsight, it should have provided an extra “rescue flight” to fly passengers back home. In the end, Sun Country did the right thing by providing some relief to the high costs incurred to its passengers, but due to its poor handling of the situation initially, the airline damaged its brand and made travelers aware of one important risk when flying any budget carrier with limited service — it can always be a gamble when things go wrong.

Since Sun Country doesn’t have any agreements with other carriers to fly its passengers during irregular operations (IROP), passengers flying in markets where Sun Country has limited service should have a backup plan in case of flight cancelations. Many domestic routes to/from Minneapolis (MSP) have daily service so this is less of a concern, but other routes within the U.S. are more limited and international routes are often only flown a few times each week.

Have a Backup Plan When Flying Sun Country Airlines

A few ideas to have some sort of insurance plan in these rare cases include using frequent flyer miles, booking a fully refundable backup flight, or using a trip protection service such as Freebird. Having a stash of frequent flyer miles can give you more options for last-minute bookings that won’t cost an arm and a leg, but these will still be hard to use if there are widespread cancelations due to weather.

If you have miles on Southwest, you can book a backup flight ahead of time and simply redeposit your miles for free if your Sun Country flight goes off without a hitch. You can also purchase a paid ticket on Southwest as a backup and get a full travel credit if you don’t use that flight as long as you cancel before its departure. Make sure you would plan to fly Southwest at some point within a year if you choose this option since you will not be given a cash refund.

Possibly the best insurance plan out there for these irregular operations situations is to purchase trip protection from Freebird . For just $19 per one-way or $34 roundtrip, you’ll be able to book a flight to the same metropolitan area on any carrier if your original flight is either canceled or delayed by more than 4 hours. This coverage is limited to domestic U.S. flights — including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico — and must be purchased at least 2 days before your first flight departs.

How to book a flight with sun country airlines.

When booking a Sun Country Airlines flight, it is generally slightly cheaper to book directly on Sun Country’s website. However, you’ll want to make sure to compare with multiple booking sites to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Since Sun Country charges for carry-on bags, you may very well find a better deal on another carrier that includes more baggage. And to find out about special sale fares and price drops, sign up for free airfare alerts .

Booking on Sun Country’s website is very straight-forward. After choosing your dates, you’ll see a list of fares over a one-week period and you can scroll left or right to show fares within two weeks of the dates you chose. After you’ve chosen dates, click “Continue” and then enter passenger information.

Extra Fees on Sun Country Airlines During the Booking Process

The following step requires you to choose what type of baggage you plan to bring on the flight. Make sure to add any baggage you require at this step to avoid higher bag fees after booking. If you plan to travel with just a personal item, just click on the “all I need” button for the “Under Seat” category. There is also the option to add priority boarding at this step.

After clicking “Continue”, you’ll be offered the opportunity to choose specific seats for a fee. Sun Country offers three levels of seats, Standard, Better, and Best. The “Better” seat features 2 extra inches of legroom and the “Best” seat gets 4 extra inches plus extra recline, preferred boarding, and one complimentary alcoholic beverage. If you don’t want to pay a fee to choose a seat, you don’t have to. Simply scroll to the bottom of the page without selecting a seat and click “Continue”. A pop-up will appear prompting you that seats will be randomly selected at check-in. Just click “continue without all seats” to avoid any extra fees.

Next, Sun Country will offer hotel and resort packages. Sometimes these can be a deal for those specific properties, but you can often find better deals by booking something else separately. If you just want the flight, scroll to the bottom and click “Continue”.

On the final review and pay page, you’ll be given the option to add a change fee waiver to your ticket, which allows one no-fee flight change within 60 days of travel as stated above. Read over all of the charges carefully to make sure you are only paying for what you need, enter the payment information, and click “accept & pay”.

If it is at least 7 days from the date of departure, you’ll have 24 hours to confirm any plans and cancel for free as per Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. If you are making a last-minute booking within one week of travel, you may want to book your flight on a third-party site such as Expedia or Priceline to take advantage of the 24-hour risk-free cancelation policy.

Check-in and boarding for a sun country airlines flight.

Online check-in is available for domestic flights between one and 24 hours prior to departure. If you didn’t pay for your bags when you booked the flight, it will cost $5 extra at this stage, but make sure to pay for any extra bags you’ve decided to bring along during online check-in , because it will be another extra $5 at the airport counter. International flights require check-in to be completed at the airport.

All passengers must be checked-in 45 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour prior for international flights. Sun Country requires you to be at the gate at least 30 minutes before departure for domestic flights and one hour prior for international flights. The boarding door closes 10 minutes prior to departure.

If you have any question as to whether your personal item is too large, I would recommend to carry it over your shoulder or at your side rather than roll it on board (if it has wheels). As long as the bag doesn’t look extra-large, it will likely be ok to bring on board without any extra fees. If you know it is too large, be prepared to pay any fees. Sun Country doesn’t list an extra gate check fee but does state that “additional charges may apply”.

The Sun Country Airlines In-flight Experience

While Sun Country no longer has a First Class cabin, it hasn’t skimped on in-flight service when compared to other ultra-low-cost carriers. All seats recline and come with full-size tray tables. Most seats also have in-seat power with USB charging ports. With a 29”-30” seat pitch, the standard seats can be a little tight on legroom compared to major airlines, but are slightly roomier than both Frontier and Spirit. For a little more legroom, choose a “Better” seat with a 32” pitch or a “Best” seat with 34” pitch.

Although Sun Country doesn’t have in-flight internet access, all passengers can connect their digital device to enjoy complimentary streaming entertainment from Sun Country’s library, which includes movies, shows, games, and music. And don’t worry about staying thirsty onboard. Sun Country’s service still includes complimentary non-alcoholic beverages. Beer, wine, liquor, and snack boxes are available for purchase with a credit or debit card. Cash is not accepted on board.

After any major change like Sun Country has undergone, there are sure to be customers who do not like the new way of operations. However, Sun Country has maintained its focus on service and does not nickel-and-dime as much as other airlines in the ultra-low-cost category. I still hear decent reviews for Sun Country Airlines from travelers who know what fees to expect and are happy with the friendly vibe that comes with a smaller airline.

Sun Country Airlines charges for everything but a personal item and the baggage fees depend on when and how you purchase your baggage. That said, there’s only $10 between purchasing a bag at the time of booking compared to at the airport, so it’s not the biggest difference that we’ve seen.

Sun Country Carry-On Rules: Everything You Need to Know

If you want to avoid extra fees on Sun Country Airlines, you need to read this

Sun Country Airlines Carry-On Size (Dimensions)

Sun country personal item size (dimensions), carry-on weight limit, recommended carry-on bag, carry-on food, carry-on pet fees, tsa-approved pet carrier for sun country, prohibited items:, sun country carry-on size and fees.

Low-cost airlines may have lower base fares, but if you aren’t careful, you’ll end up paying more because of all the “a la carte” fees they have.   These include fees for both checked and carry-on luggage (as well as seat assignments, beverages, printing your boarding pass, etc..). This is especially true when flying Sun Country, Spirit or Frontier Airlines .

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about Sun Country’s carry-on policy. This includes Sun Country’s carry-on size and weight limits, liquid policy, pets, and other restrictions you should know before boarding a flight with Sun Country.

Sun Country Airlines Carry-On Policy

Sun Country allows one personal item onboard at no charge, but they charge for both carry-on and checked bags.  The personal item must fit under the seat in front of you, and the carry-on bag must be stowed in the overhead bin or it will have to be checked.

Sun Country’s size requirements for a carry-on are 24″ x 16″ x 11″.

Carry-on bag fees vary based on when you purchase and are non-refundable.  The following are the fees you will pay for your carry-on, each way, depending on your destination.

• During Booking: up to $30
• Before & During Online Check-In: $35
• At the Airport: $40

If you aren’t sure what size your carry-on is, Sun Country provides “size check templates” located at their ticketing counters and departure gates. Sun Country is very strict about carry on size and they will make sure your bags comply to their size restrictions!

Personal items include a purse, briefcase, laptop, backpack, or a similar-sized item.  Dimensions must not exceed 17 x 13 x 9 inches.

Sun Country requires your carry-on bag to be less than 35 pounds.

If you are looking for a great carry-on bag when flying Sun Country, I recommend the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable Spinner. I have used this carry-on for years. It’s durable, reasonably priced, and holds everything I need for shorter trips. Plus the spinner wheels make it very easy to get through the airport quickly.

This carry-on bag has been sizer bin tested to accommodate overhead bin space on most major US airlines.

Case Dimensions:

• H: 21 in. W: 14 in. D: 9 in.

Note: If fully expanded it may not meet overhead bin size limits, so be careful to not overpack.

Sun Country Liquid Rules

The rules for carry-on liquids are set by the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), not by the airline.  Sun Country doesn’t have its own specific Liquids Policy, they just enforce the rules and policies of the TSA.

You may carry liquids, gels, and aerosols in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters . Each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of liquids, gels, and aerosols. Common travel items that must comply with the 3-1-1 liquids rule include toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, perfume, mouthwash, deodorant, and lotion.

Any liquid that does not meet the TSA 3-1-1 rule will either have to be checked with your luggage or will be thrown away at the security checkpoint.

Exceptions to this rule are certain medications and baby food/child nourishment .

The TSA also sets the rules for what type of food you can bring on the plane . When bringing food with you from home, an important thing to note is the classification of liquid vs. solid foods.  

The general rule is “If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, then it’s considered a liquid or gel,”.   This means your food may be considered a liquid and will fall under the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule , which mandates that any liquid, gel, cream, aerosol, or paste in a carry-on must be 3.4 ounces or less, and fit in one quart-size resealable bag (only one such bag is allowed per passenger).

Here’s a link to the TSA website advising what food can be brought with you on your Sun Country flight.  This applies to food you are bringing from home through security.   Once you get through security, you can bring just about any food on the plane you buy at the airport.

Sun Country Carry-On Pet Policy

Sun Country Airlines allows Small dogs and cats may travel in the passenger section of the plane on flights within the U.S. 48. Sun Country does not allow pets to be checked as baggage.

If you are going to bring a pet on board with you, it must be able to fit in a small, ventilated pet carrier that fits under the seat in front of you.  Your pet carrier cannot exceed 16″ x 10″ x 8″.

Here is a chart showing the pet fees Sun Country charges each way.   Double them for a round-trip flight.

A maximum of four pets are allowed per flight, and only one pet per ticketed traveler is allowed.  Always make sure there is space for your pet when you purchase the tickets.

If you do plan on bringing your pet with you, make sure you follow TSA’s pet policy and have an approved Pet Carrier that conforms to Sun Country’s pet policy .

I have traveled with 2 dogs over the last 10 years, one was a 20 lb. Shih Tzu-Bichon (in the picture above) and another is a 12lb. Chihuahua mix. We used the Sherpa pet carrier when bringing them on a flight with us and it worked great!

Approved for use on most major airlines and the small and medium sizes are included in Sherpa's exclusive Guaranteed on Board program.

Prohibited and Dangerous Items

There are certain items that are considered dangerous and classified as a hazardous material. Dangerous goods are prohibited from both your carry-on and checked bag on all flights. These rules are not specific to any airline and are mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

As a common rule of thumb, if an item is flammable, hazardous, or could be used as a weapon, leave it at home. Bringing a prohibited item to a security checkpoint — even accidentally — is illegal and travelers may be criminally and/or civilly prosecuted or at the least asked to dispose of the item.

Here is a list of items that are considered dangerous goods and are strictly prohibited on United Airlines flights:

• Firearms and ammunition
• Self-defense sprays, such as mace and  pepper spray
• Explosives, including fireworks and flares
• Flammable liquids, including gasoline, lighter fluid, and kerosene
• Poisonous, infectious, or radioactive substances
• Knives and sharp objects (pocket knives, cutting instruments,  razors , ice picks, carpet knives, metal scissors, box cutters, or similar items) 
• Any alcoholic beverage with more than 70 percent alcohol
• Hoverboards, including electric skateboards, balance boards, gravity boards, and self-balancing devices
• Torch lighters , lighter fluid, strike-anywhere matches, and fire starters
• Wet-cell batteries

Naperville sun opinion | decent: one of my favorite memories from my first trip to america involved short stacks, syrup pitchers and a blue-roofed restaurant.

Visiting the U.S. was like stepping into a film. Everyone in England grew up watching American TV shows and movies so we were very familiar with what life was like on this side of the pond. Your cars were twice the size of ours, clothes brighter and everyone was so warm and friendly, unlike us stuffy Brits, so it was particularly fun when we had a chance to visit our first “diner.”

We were in Los Angeles and keen to experience our first American breakfast. Back home, a “full English,” as it’s known, consists of a couple of slices of thick greasy bacon, a pork sausage, mushrooms, tom’ar’toes (not tom’A’toes), fried eggs and fried bread. If you’re unlucky, it also comes with a slice of black pudding, a polite name for blood sausage. The drink of choice was normally a mug of tea.

To me everything in America was bigger and better than in England. The TV shows were funnier, the sky brighter. I was completely in awe of everything, which is why what you might consider mundane was amazing to me.

When we saw a diner at the side of the road with a big blue shiny roof, I knew it would be wonderful. Instead of having to find our own seat, a waitress in a neat dress and apron showed us where to sit. The table was already laid and, best of all, there was a small dish of butter pats and jelly plus the ubiquitous pitcher of maple syrup.

“Wow, they really do have these,” I exclaimed to my new husband, who only a week in was beginning to realize what he had let himself in for. “Look how the cover opens over the spout. It’s so clever!”

Before I could even pick up the large, plastic-covered menu, our waitress appeared with two white mugs and a carafe full of steaming hot coffee.

“Ooo, yes please!” I cried with more enthusiasm than a child being asked if he wanted dessert before dinner.

The mugs were perfect, just the right size for me. Like Goldilocks, I don’t like my cups too big or too small. And don’t get me started on the coffee. Not having a taste for the strong stuff, I like my coffee like my men, full of beans with a hint of sweetness.

Sipping on my drink, it was time to wrangle a menu that was larger than any I’d ever seen.

“Look at all these choices,” I extolled. “It’s going to take me until lunchtime to make up my mind.”

Although I noticed the name “International” on the top of the menu, I couldn’t find any global dishes listed other than French toast. Undeterred, I went straight for the most American thing I could think of. Pancakes!

Obviously, we eat pancakes in England. In fact, they even have their own special day. Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras as it’s known here, is also called Pancake Day. Brits rush to use up eggs, flour and milk before Lent in the unlikely event anyone would consider them a treat before Easter. Pancake races are held in some parts of the country and much merriment — and cleaning — is to be had trying to toss them as high as you can from the frying pan.

Thanks to my extensive research (“Bewitched,” “The Waltons” and a documentary on American obesity), I knew they’d be nothing like the ones I was used to. And what better way to break the diet I’d been on for the last eight months before our wedding?

“Should I have a short stack or whatever the opposite is?” I asked Grumpy over the top of my menu.

“Tall stack?” he ventured. “Probably best to stick with the short version. It might be quicker to cook. I’m hungry.”

As I soon learned, all food delivery in American restaurants is quick, especially when you’re trying to have a night out on a one-course meal.

“Here you are, honey,” said my waitress, carefully placing a plate the size of Rhode Island in front of me.

I was so excited to be called honey, even by a complete stranger, that I barely noticed I was missing a knife and fork. Fortunately, my server did.

“Oh, you’re missing your silverware. Let me go get it,” she said as she danced off.

“Silverware?” said Grumpy, confused. “What’s she talking about?”

In England, silverware can be anything from a silver-plated salamander to a Russian tea urn, but never knives, forks and spoons, especially when they’re made of stainless steel. Before I had a chance to rummage around in my purse for my guidebook, she returned with the answer, wrapped up in a red and white napkin.

I reached for a couple of butter portions, using the knife to spread them over the spongy, fluffy comforters in front of me. Then I pulled back the cover on the syrup and swirled it over the top. The steam from the pancakes melted the butter, pulling in the sweet syrup like a sparrow drowning in quicksand. Delicious.

It was only when we moved to the United States permanently that I saw the same wonderful restaurant again and was excited to give it another try. By now you’ve probably had enough clues to realize I’ve been fantasizing about IHOP, which used to be known as the International House of Pancakes.

Time is a funny thing, and it’s true the decades may have clouded my memories. But in those days, to someone on her first trip to her dream location, it really was a marvelous place.

Richard Parker has pulled off a surprise victory in the West Midlands mayoral election.

The Labour candidate unseated Andy Street, winning by just 1,508 votes, to end the Tory's seven-year term.

Here's what you need to know about the relatively unknown politician.

Originally from Bristol, Mr Parker's father was a dock worker and his mother a school secretary.

He left school aged 16 and went straight to work at a local port authority before getting an economics degree.

Mr Parker went to work for PwC in 1989, where he gained his accountancy qualifications and went on to become a partner, managing the accountancy firm's relationship with the Labour Party.

Mr Parker also worked with council leaders to set up the West Midlands Combined Authority in 2016 before leaving to set up his own company RP Strategy.

Tory incumbent Andy Street has suffered a shock defeat to Labour in the West Midlands mayoral election after a partial recount was ordered.

Labour's Richard Parker beat Mr Street by just 1,508 votes - 0.25% - to deliver a major blow to Rishi Sunak in the key electoral battleground after a hammering in the local elections.

With the race neck-and-neck, in the end it came down to the results in one borough - Labour-supporting Sandwell.

"This is the most important thing I will ever do," Mr Parker said in his acceptance speech.

"I promise you that I will deliver jobs," he added.

He told Sky News he would take buses "back into public control" and deliver the "largest programme of social housing we've had in this region for more than 40 years".

And he thanked his predecessor, who he said had "led this region through a number of great challenges and you deserve great credit for that".

Labour's win in the West Midlands has left Rishi Sunak with "just one man standing", Sky's  political editor Beth Rigby  says. 

The Conservatives have now lost all of the mayoral races in this election, with the exception of Tees Valley. 

Beth says one senior Labour figure has told her the West Midlands was the Tory scalp Labour really wanted - and were pulling resources from Tees Valley to make it happen.

"They were really fighting hard to take this Tory jewel from the crown," she says.

The "energy and the euphoria was palpable" within the Labour camp after victory was declared, Beth says .

"They were so wired, excited, euphoric about this win because for them it is huge."

She says you could feel among the Labour activists, and Sir Keir Starmer himself, that they are beginning to feel "they can really do this" in the general election.

Symbolically they can say "we took your crown jewel in the West Midlands and we are coming for those seats".

"It gives Starmer momentum and it will leave the Conservatives hugely deflated," she adds.

Labour's new mayor for the West Midlands Richard Parker tells Sky News he plans to "work really closely with a future Labour government".

"I think that's the best way for us to work together for the wider benefit of this region," he says.

Mr Parker defeated Tory incumbent Andy Street in a major blow to the Conservatives.

Labour's election success is a "vindication of the hard work that we've done to change the Labour Party," Sir Keir Starmer says.

He heralds the "phenomenal result" in the West Midlands, which saw Labour's Richard Parker defeat the Tory incumbent. 

But he says Labour is now stepping up again towards the general election "so that we can serve the working people once again as a new and changed party".

He is asked about the extent to which Labour's stance on the Gaza war has cost the party votes.

"Where we have not been able to persuade people who might otherwise have voted for Labour, it is important to acknowledge that - to say I have heard, I've listened and I am determined to meet the concerns they have and win back their trust and confidence."

"But nothing takes away from the significance of this victory here in the West Midlands," he says.

Labour's Richard Parker is appearing alongside Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer after winning the West Midlands mayoral race. 

"It's time for a fresh start ... we start on Monday," Mr Parker says to a loud applause.

Speaking next, Sir Keir declares: "What a way to end the local elections in 2024". 

"This is a significant piece of political history that we have made here today," he says.

Defeated Conservative mayor Andy Street tells Sky News he would advise against his party drifting to the right, saying his brand of "tolerant conservatism" has come "within an ace of beating the Labour Party".

"The thing everyone should take from Birmingham in the West Midlands tonight is this brand of moderate, inclusive, tolerant conservatism that gets on and delivered has come within an ace of beating the Labour Party in, what they considered to be their backyard," he says. 

"That's the message from here tonight."

Asked if he is worried the Conservative party is drifting to the right and over-emphasising the threat from Reform UK while "ignoring other voters", he said: "I would definitely not advise that drift.

"The psychology here is really very straight forward isn't it: this is the youngest, most diverse, one of the most urban places in Britain and we've done, many would say, extremely well over a consistent period.

"The message is clear: winning from that centre ground is what happens."

Mr Street lost to Labour's Richard Parker in the West Midlands mayoral race by a margin of 1,508 votes.

Defeated Conservative mayor Andy Street tells Sky News he is "hugely disappointed" and "devastated", but "incredibly proud" to lose by a small margin of votes in a region of millions, "given the situation the party finds itself in".

"Given that this has always been a place where some people said you should never have won in the first place, I'm actually very, very proud of what we've done," he says.

"I genuinely believed we were making real progress across the region on so many pieces.

"And for that to be closed off, that is disappointing in the extreme."

But he says "we did not persuade enough people that our record was as good as I believed it was, or that our plans for the future were exciting enough".

Asked if it was the national Conservative Party picture that led to his defeat, he said: "It was my campaign totally".

"I am not going to try to push responsibility anywhere else ... they'll be no sloping shoulders from me".

Defeated Conservative mayor Andy Street has said he is sorry he "couldn't make it the hat-trick" after losing to Labour's Richard Parker in the West Midlands mayoral race. 

In a short speech, Mr Street said it had been his "honour" to serve as mayor for the last seven years, telling his team "you will be back".

He says he hopes he has led with "dignity and integrity" and has "bequeathed to Richard a combined authority and indeed a role to which young aspiring leaders will want to aspire one day".

"In a sense, I can have done no more than that," he said.

Mr Street thanked his fellow candidates, including Mr Parker, for a "very courteous campaign", wishing Mr Parker "all strength and wisdom as he takes on this role".

"Thank you and goodnight," he concluded.
