Woolverton Inn | Stockton, New Jersey

You may not think the Garden State has much to offer in the way of quiet, country retreats, but you'd be surprised. Less than two hours from both NYC and Philly, this bed and breakfast is perched upon 300 acres of farmland with four adorable, wooly sheep on hand to welcome you to your home away from home. Spend your days relaxing on the bucolic premises, take a class at Tullamore Farm Cooking School , or get lost in the stunning Wildflower Preserve at Bowman's Hill . Leanto | Orcas Island in Moran State Park, Washington

Tell your friends and family members to forget about texting you for a few days: You can't get more off-the-grid than an island in a state park hideaway on Washington state's San Juan Islands. First up: disconnect from Facebook and reconnect with the wilderness, with five freshwater lakes and 30 miles of hiking trails right outside  Leanto's glamping sites . Don't skip the sunrise yoga classes at the peak of the island's highest point, Mt. Constitution , or a sea kayaking experience . Feeling sluggish? Rosario Resort and Spa  is less than a half-hour away, with therapeutic body wraps, healing stones, and an indoor saltwater pool you'll want to bring home as a souvenir.

El Portal Sedona Hotel | Sedona, Arizona

There's nothing quite like desert magic to revive your outlook on life. And who said you had to leave Fido at home? This pet-friendly hotel lets you bring man's best friend along for some bountiful R&R, smack in the middle of Arizona's desert countryside. Bathe in the privacy of your patio or balcony, or venture around the beautifully manicured grounds (if you can pry yourself away from your room's airy cashmere blanket, that is). With only 12 rooms, the emphasis here is on you, so soak up every moment of independent bliss, especially the ones that involve lemon buttermilk pancakes, smothered with apples, bananas and cream.

The Graceland Inn | Elkins, West Virginia

When you're distracted by TV, ringing phones, work deadlines (and perhaps the pressing urgency of hungry kids), it's hard to be present. When you're climbing at West Virginia's celebrated Seneca Rocks in Monongahela National Forest, it's hard to be anything but . After a good climb, you'll be grateful for the comfort of The Graceland Inn (about 35 miles west from Seneca Rocks). But back to those rocks: The reward for experienced climbers who make it to the top is a sidewalk-wide peak, with drops 300-feet down on both sides. Not a climber? Try the 1.3 mile trail behind the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center for views from the top of the rocks without actually, you know, climbing there, or head to nearby  Mountain Rail Adventures for a train ride through the state's stunning landscapes.

The Vintages | Dayton, Oregon

We're calling it now: 2017 will be the Year of the RV (though really, isn't every year?). So it should come as no surprise that ever-hip Oregon has a one-of-a-kind resort setup in the heart of Willamette Valley's  wine country that consists of—you guessed it—refurbished vintage trailers, 31 to be exact. Laze in your truck's swanky terrycloth robe, de-stress in a hot tub (parked right outside your temporary home), or hop on your cruiser bike (again, conveniently parked right outside your home).

For more information, visit  the-vintages.com .

Alaska Bear Safari | Alaska

We'd be remiss if Alaska didn't make the cut on a list of the best off-the-grid vacations. We guarantee you'll be in awe of the Alaskan wildness and this magnificent bush camp for years to come. The "Alaska: A Bear Viewing and Wilderness Odyssey" safari takes you bear and whale watching, aboard a glacier and wildlife cruise, on a raft trip along the Kenai River, and more. Pro-tip: Put that camera down for a few seconds, or you may miss the sea lions and puffins.

Adventures on the Gorge | Lansing, West Virginia

If you're looking for a bit of an adrenaline rush when you disappear from it all for a few days, this is your spot. Rural enough that the website notes "don't trust only your GPS," this unique getaway is situated on the rim of the New River Gorge. Push your boundaries with whitewater rafting (all levels welcome), kayaking, rock climbing, and more. And don't leave without taking the wild cave tour , which inspires the most unexpected of zen moments — crawling 120-feet underground amongst the stalactites and stalagmites. Extend your rugged adventure into the twilight hours with the property's on-site camping site or spring for a cabin or luxury vacation rental.

Omni Mount Washington Bretton Arms Inn | Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

If you're struggling to decide between a guided backcountry adventure or dog sledding in the Granite State, rest assured that you can't go wrong either way. Just be sure to stay at this elegantly restored historic inn. If all you want to do is sit back and relax, take a calming stroll through the perennial gardens and then plop yourself down at the inn's distinctive Cave bar, a Prohibition-era speakeasy where stone and brick line the walls (and where stiff drinks line your stomach).

State Game Lodge | Custer, South Dakota

South Dakota is a place that feels like home, even if you've never been. You'll love the hinterland allure of State Game Lodge , set amidst the roaming bison and buffalo. It's hard not to call the lodge's open-air Jeep " Buffalo Safari " a bucket-list experience, but if you feel you need to up the ante, pair it with an authentic western Chuck Wagon Cookout , which comes with a heaping cowboy-worthy dinner, stellar views, and an old-fashioned hayride. Badlands National Park  is just an hour away, so you can slip a second majestic park into your solo detox , too.

Hillbrook Inn & Spa | Charles Town, West Virginia

Sometimes you don't realize how much you needed an unescorted retreat to the backcountry until you sip the rejuvenating air and spend a few days recharging to the tune of your own whims. Here, you may need to tack on a few extra days: horseback riding, snow tubing, and the heart-warming joy of a farmhouse fire all beckon. Simply put, you'll have a hard time peeling yourself away from this quaint inn and the laid-back local activities. It's only an hour outside of Washington, D.C., but you'll feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Grab a few books from the library and you may never want to leave the back terrace (well, maybe for your exfoliating facial at the spa).

Biltmore | Asheville, North Carolina

Ah, the handsome grandeur of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Take it all in while experiencing superb horseback riding, clay shooting, and Segway tour fun on this idyllic southern estate. Find inner peace on a self-guided tour of the Frederick Law Olmstead-designed gardens and grounds before attending a complimentary tasting (or two) at the Biltmore Winery (oenophiles may consider signing up for the Red Wine and Chocolate Tour ). Perhaps our favorite way to explore this bucolic destination? A River Float trip, where the self-guided kayak ride proves a powerful antidote to... just about anything.

Chickasaw Retreat and Conference Center | Sulphur, Oklahoma

If you're primarily interested in sitting around, doing nothing but taking in views of glistening lakes, vibrant foothills, and awe-inspiring waterfalls with no plans to speak of, this is the spot for you. And if you decide to reserve a few more days to explore local caves or tour the historic Foreman Prairie House , that works, too. Just make sure to leave enough time to take a stroll among the wildflowers of the  Chickasaw National Recreation Area , before lazing around at Chickasaw Retreat's sauna and steamroom.

Northern Neck | Virginia

Those stress management apps you downloaded? Pffft. They've got nothing on the revitalizing power of watching an orange-streaked sunset over Rappahannock River at Belle Isle State Park . Bookend your stained glass program with a day to enjoy Westmoreland State Park where you can stay in 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps-era cabins and beachcomb for sharks' teeth. Finally, experience the local wildlife (birds! butterflies! turtles!) by treating yourself to a day on the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail .

Glenlaurel Scottish Inn and Cottages | Hocking Hills, Ohio

Enjoy a traditional six- or seven-course feast for dinner on Saturdays (bagpiper included) at the handsome Glenlaurel property. The next day, wake up to a leisurely day of wandering private hiking trails, teeing off on the Scottish Links golf course, and finally, don't miss the nightly social hour at the downstairs pub, where you're bound to make new pals. Though, if the goal of this trip is to log some serious me-time, may we suggest sweeping yourself away for some stargazing, instead. Head to Hocking Hills State Park , where the sky scenery is so fabulous that plans are in the works to build the John Glenn Astronomy Park here.

10 Off-the-Grid Hotels and Resorts Designed for Unplugging

Isla Palenque Gulf of Chiriquí Panama

We use ‘getaway’ as a synonym for vacation because, at its best, that’s exactly what it is—a chance to escape our daily lives, if only for several days. But there are some places that take this idea even further, where ‘getting away’ actually means ‘far from civilization,’ and all the necessities (and then some) are taken care of for you. Think a remote desert oasis with outdoor tubs for stargazing , a whale-watching respite off Panama's Pacific coast, or fireplace-filled suites nestled between sprawling African lakes. If you’re searching for a spot where no one will find you, these remote hotels are a good place to start.

Tierra Patagonia Hotel Spa Chile

Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa, Torres del Paine, Chile

Set atop a bluff where the South American pampa (fertile plain) meets Lake Sarmiento, the 40-room Tierra Patagonia is exactly where we’d want to find ourselves between the whipping winds: Clad in lenga beechwood and banked with earth, the walls of this low-slung hotel barely register the gales blowing over from Patagonia’s Southern Ice Field. It’s not all rough and tumble, though. Interiors at the hotel are spare but cozy, with wide, light wood-framed windows and white finishes throughout, and even a well-stocked library. Depending on your fitness level, set up a half- or full-day excursion to the Paso de Agostini, or the French Valley, to both get off-grid and have a dream setting to return to after long days hiking and biking.

Castle Hot Springs Arizona

Castle Hot Springs, Arizona

Looking for a deep-breath escape to disconnect from work emails? A luxe all-inclusive that encourages guests to limit their Wi-Fi connectivity , Castle Hot Springs is a historic desert oasis known for its 115-degree natural springs once used by Native American tribes for their healing properties, and only accessible by off-roading seven miles of unpaved road. The resort dates back to 1896, and was previously a military rehabilitation site for World War II servicemen including then-future-president John F. Kennedy himself. Its luxurious, newly-renovated private cabins feature outdoor soaking tubs for stargazing, and activities range from guided hikes and paddleboard yoga to meditation classes, horseback riding, archery practice, and tours of its two-acre on-site farm. The resort's farm-to-table food program is included in all stays; think fresh-vegetable quiches, nasturtium chimichurri-dressed rib-eye steaks, and in-house mixology infusions.

Guests have six options for enjoying the actual hot springs, like under the stars or inside the restored, 19th-century bathhouse. Ambergris Cay Turks and Caicos

Guests arrive by private air transfer, and for those staying in a suite the two on-site dining options are bolstered by complimentary in-room dining available 24 hours a day.

Isla Palenque Gulf of Chiriquí Panama

Isla Palenque, Panama

Hop a domestic flight from Panama City to the remote 400-acre resort of Isla Palenque —named “sanctuary island” by pre-Colombian indigenous tribes. The peninsular getaway in the Pacific Gulf of Chiriqui is known for its coral reefs, calm beaches, and summertime humpback-whale migrations. Nine standalone villas and seven surrounding beaches on Isla Palenque channel a luxurious castaway experience complete with private infinity pools, locally sourced meals and beverages (like fresh smoothies and local coffee), and an outdoor hammock lounge. Activities like jungle hikes, snorkeling, whale watching, and paddle boarding will mix things up in between all that relaxation, and help keep you disconnected despite the resort's readily available Wi-Fi.

andBeyond Benguerra Island

andBeyond Benguerra Lodge, Mozambique

For anyone looking for a dreamy, tropical island escape (especially those fancying some R&R after safaris on the mainland), andBeyond’s Benguerra Lodge on Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago should be firmly on the “must visit” list. It may be a bit of a schlep to get there—the best way is to fly from Johannesburg to Vilankulos, then hop on a helicopter—but it’s an exciting one. As well as perfect beaches, there’s horseback riding, sunset cruising on a traditional dhow followed by dolphin, big game fishing, snorkeling, and diving to be experienced. Don’t miss a visit to see the flock of flamingo that inhabit a nearby freshwater lake—especially with a “castaway picnic” to accompany you there and onto a completely secluded beach.

Hatta Dome Park Dubai

Hatta Dome Park, Dubai

Visitors to bustling Dubai can go remote two hours outside the city with a visit to Hatta Dome Park , a luxury glamping park in the Hatta Mountains bordering Oman. The outpost offers thrilling activities like hiking, paragliding, and kayaking on the nearby lakes, and features 15 permanent dome-tent suites equipped with bathrooms, mini bars, air conditioning, and fire pits outfitted for barbecuing. While there are TVs and Wi-Fi available, connection can be spotty—which can be your excuse to disconnect completely for long hikes and nightly stargazing under the sparkling Arabian Desert sky.

The 7 Best Remote Destinations in the United States to Escape to in 2021

Ultima Thule Lodge

Hoh Rainforest (Washington)

Canyon point (utah), 100-mile wilderness (maine), boundary waters canoe area wilderness (minnesota), wrangell mountains (alaska), north rim of the grand canyon (arizona), big sur (california).

The word “rainforest” conjures images of hiking in Costa Rica or paddling the Amazon River. But, just a couple of hours from Seattle lies one of the world’s most unique and beautiful rainforests. Inside Olympic National Park is where you’ll find Hoh (pronounced “hoe”) Rainforest — an impossibly dense, verdant, moss-covered expanse that sees up to 14 feet of rain per year. It’s one of the most surreal places in the Lower 48, even the world, for finding a digital detox.

Where to Stay

A single campground within Hoh Rainforest offers 72 mostly primitive sites. Travelers looking for more creature comforts will find the nearest hotels roughly an hour away in the town of Forks. Kalaloch Lodge , in particular, is a great option. The lodge has been an institution on the Olympic Peninsula for more than a century. It was initially built with milled lumber from massive driftwood logs that washed ashore on the nearby beaches of Kalaloch Creek. Today, the main lodge remains and is surrounded by rustic but well-appointed private cabins. The best part? No Wi-Fi, no telephones, and few TVs anywhere on the property.

  • The 20 Best Places in the U.S. You Need To Visit Now

It’s difficult to imagine a more humbling, awe-inspiring, and relaxing experience than standing in the middle of a desert. Southern Utah offers the perfect backdrop for just such a getaway. Canyon Point, in particular, sits at the intersection of five national parks , including Bryce Canyon, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and Zion.

Overnighting in the desert doesn’t have to mean roughing it like a Bedouin. Amangiri is a literal oasis in the Utah desert. Just a short drive from this stunning luxury resort is the new Camp Sarika. Situated amid 600 acres of a surreal, Mars-like landscape, this tented camp provides a perfect digital detox with five-star accommodations and amenities. Just 10 canvas-topped pavilion guest rooms make up the exclusive property — each with fire pits, private plunge pools, luxury bedding, and designer interiors. For guests who find a reason to leave their rooms, the camp also boasts a world-class wellness center, on-site restaurant, and direct access to stunning hiking trails.

Outside of Maine’s southeast coast, much of the state is wild, raw, and sparsely populated. But, the 100-Mile Wilderness is an entirely different beast. Appalachian Trail hikers know this 100-mile path as the last and most arduous push toward Mount Katahdin, the AT’s northern terminus. It’s an entirely off-grid stretch of pristine lakes, dense forest, and dramatic, rocky outcroppings — all of which make it perfect for a remote digital detox for those willing to work to get there.

There are no towns and little civilization of any kind along the entire 100-Mile Wilderness. Hikers looking to overnight will have to do so in their own tents in the woods. Those looking to hike a portion of it at a time can stay off-trail, however. The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) operates three lodges in the area. All are rustic but offer essentials like running water, heat/AC, and warm beds. Travelers looking for more extravagant digs will find plenty of private cabins in the nearby towns of Millinocket and Greenville.

National Geographic Traveler called Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness one of the “50 Places of a Lifetime” to visit. It’s more than one million acres of pristine wilderness in northeastern Minnesota that’s changed little since North America’s glaciers melted. Within its borders, you’ll find 1,100 lakes and 1,200 miles of canoe routes that all make it a paddler’s dream. Drop a kayak or canoe in the water, and spend a long weekend or a week exploring on your own. If it’s serious solitude you seek, head to Adams or Boulder Lakes — two of the area’s most remote lakes where you’re unlikely to see another soul.

Deer Ridge Resort

At twice the size of Texas and one-fifth of all the lower 48 states combined, Alaska is vast, rugged, remote, and sparsely populated. Those are the reasons why more people go missing in the state — the so-called “ Alaska Triangle ” — than anywhere else in the U.S. But, it’s those same reasons that make the state the perfect destination for a true escape.

If you’re looking to get away from the digital world without giving up the “luxury” trappings of home, Ultima Thule Alaska Lodge may be just the place. This exclusive luxe retreat is billed as “Real. Wild. Raw.” and the name comes from the Greek to describe “the unknowable realm beyond the northern bounds of their maps.” Indeed, the nearest road is 100 miles away, and the property is only accessible by bush plane. But, each of the private cabins is well-appointed with leather chairs, cherry writing desks, and hunting-inspired accents. Guests are provided all the necessary kit for a week in the great outdoors — including hiking gear, fishing poles, and professional guides to ensure you don’t get too lost in the adjacent 13-million-acre Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

If even the Alaska hunting lodge lifestyle is too First World for you, escape to the Grand Canyon. We’re not talking about the landmark’s South Rim that’s perpetually overrun with families of road-tripping tourists jockeying for selfies. No, those looking for a true escape should trek to the canyon’s lesser-known North Rim. Less than 10% of all Grand Canyon visitors ever see this remote section of America’s most famed natural wonder.

The North Rim is where you’ll find Tuweep Campground — an extremely remote, primitive campground that’s worlds away from anywhere. The view from the adjacent Toroweap Overlook is among the best in any U.S. National Park: A steep, dramatic bluff perched 3,000 vertical feet above the Colorado River with stunning sunrise/sunset views and nary a sign of civilization in sight. Zero light pollution makes for out-of-this-world stargazing, too. The experience doesn’t come easy, however. The National Park Service is quick to note that, out here, you’re on your own. “Services are non-existent: There is no water, gas, food, lodging, or phone service.” If you’re looking for a real digital detox, that should be music to your ears.

Even in a state as rich with stunning outdoor scenery as California, the Central Coast stands out. Sandwiched between the hustle of Los Angeles and San Francisco, the region remains one of The Golden State’s most pristine outdoor destinations.

In the heart of Big Sur lies New Camaldoli Hermitage — a working Benedictine monastery where more than 150,000 visitors have retreated over the last 50 years. If the idea of a retreat sounds too new age, just think of it as the ideal place to escape Facebook for a week or two. You won’t have a choice either, because there is no internet or cell service at the hermitage. Rooms at the monastery are comfortable but spartan as the primary focus is to encourage guests to relax in the beautiful on-site gardens, meditate (literally or through simple housekeeping chores), and get lost in the gentle, ever-present lapping of the Pacific Ocean waves.

On a visit to Italy, there’s almost too much to see and do. If you’re a car enthusiast, a guided trip through the Ferrari museums in Maranello or Modena offers a singular experience. For a mix of historic charm and coastal refreshment, the Amalfi Coast delivers in spades. Then there’s the cuisine, from pizza Napoletana in Naples to sweet Tiramisu in Venice.

In May, the weather’s sweet, and the prices are reasonable, giving you abundant travel options. In the Northern Hemisphere, the world awakens from its winter slumber, birds sing, and nature blooms, creating a rejuvenating mood.

When the day of a trip arrives, there’s a feeling of freedom and excitement. Whether you’re going for some spring skiing in Lake Tahoe, or visiting Italy’s Amalfi Coast, it’s a time to relax and unwind and experience new things. But airport hangups can throw a wrench in your plans.

Flight delays and cancellations, lost baggage, and hidden fees make your getaway a hassle, producing long waits and questionable charges. But all that’s set to change with the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) new rules for airlines. For travelers, they’re a game changer. Here are the details. New DOT regulations save travelers money

Britain may be one of the most crowded islands on earth, but it’s nevertheless still possible to trek for days through some truly remote areas, mainly in the north of Scotland and the Welsh hills. Scattered across these moors and valleys are old stone bothies, once lived in by farm workers and estate staff. Nowadays they lie empty except for a supply of firewood, awaiting the next walkers keen to rest and warm themselves at the end of a long day’s ramble.

The Mountain Bothy Association maintains around a hundred of them across the British Isles. They are very simple places: no water, perhaps a wood-burning stove and at best a platform upon which to roll out a mat to sleep. There’s no booking system, no room key and no charge – you simply turn up, sleep the night, tidy up and move on.

Bothies are only to be used for short stays and are too small for groups any larger than six. The Mountain Bothy Association ( www.mountainbothies.org.uk ) offers members details of where the various huts are located.

On a clear day, standing on top of Glen Alladale, you can see the east and west coasts of Scotland. This is the narrowest point in Britain and also one of its most remote: an hour and a half from Inverness, itself the northernmost city in the UK. But then, you don’t come to stay in the lodge and cottages of the 93-square-kilometre Glen Alladale Wilderness Reserve for the nightlife.

Wildlife, however, is another matter. You can watch (or catch) salmon as they swim and leap their way upstream to spawn. The sky is patrolled by buzzards, peregrine falcons, ospreys and even golden eagles. And amid the heather and pine-covered terrain, along with the many deer, there are wild boars, pine martens, otters and a couple of elk.

Denali National Park, Alaska © Bryan Neuswanger/Shutterstock

The whole point of walking in the designated wilderness area of Alaska’s Denali National Park is that you can make it up as you go along. Unlike the smooth, well-managed paths around the park’s entrance area, the backcountry has no managed trails, so you have to rely on good old-fashioned navigation and nous.

Occasionally you’ll come across “social trails” of footprints where others have gone before you, but to limit your impact on the fragile ecosystem it’s best to avoid these and forge your own route; negotiating the boggy tundra, traversing ridgelines and following the many rivers in this spectacular heartland of Alaska – home to wolves, Dall sheep, moose, caribou and bears.

The challenge of negotiating your way across the trackless tundra, camping out in the wild and pitting your wits against Alaska’s elements requires determination, flexibility and ingenuity, but your reward is hiking in true wilderness with only wild animals and wildflowers for company.

Reservations (only available one day in advance) are made at the Backcountry Information Center at the park’s Riley Creek entrance area. For a checklist of equipment and advice on low-impact hiking in Denali see alaska.org/denali/advice-denali-backcountry.htm .

When people talk about the edge of the world, they’re probably thinking of places like this. Sailing among the seventeen treeless Commander Islands in the icy Bering sea, where the only settlement has a population of 750 people, is a journey into an extreme wilderness of volcanic plateaux and legendary summer fogs which can blanket out all around for miles.

This wilderness is far from empty though. Around 200,000 northern fur seals spend their summer here to mate and give birth and a million sea birds, including fulmars, guillemots, puffins and kittiwakes form huge colonies atop the coastal cliffs.

Dr Vladimir Sevostianov, a marine biologist with more than 25 years’ experience of fieldwork in the region, leads two-week trips to discover the islands by sea and on foot. One day you might be bathing in a hot spring, the next following migrating whales or training your binoculars on colonies of sea birds on the cliffs above. Guests stay in simple cabins in Nickolskoe, the only town on the islands, or on board the research vessel, part-funded through tourist fees. As time is also spent meeting the local Aleut people you’ll leave with some insight into the culture of those who make this inhospitable place their home.

When Lake Baikal freezes over, it’s possible to drive from the mainland 12km over the ice to Olkhon, one of the world’s largest lakebound islands. As you reach it (with a sense of relief that you didn’t sink into the icy depths) you’ll see the road’s edge coloured with wooden poles tacked with fluttering ribbons: shamanic totems where it’s customary to stop and make an offering of a few coins.

Jack Sheremetoff – a native of the nearby city of Irkutsk, where you can stay at his Baikaler Hostel – takes visitors from the hostel to explore this island, where you’ll peer over precipitous cliffs and shine your torch into icicle-filled caves. Accommodation is in the wooden home of one of Jack’s friends, where instead of running water there is a banya (a Russian sauna) to get clean. Dinners include omul, the salmon-like fish found only in these waters.

Three-night or four-night tours start from Irkutsk, a major stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway, five days’ travel from Moscow. For more on Baikaler Hostel as well as tour details see baikaler.com/ .

If any country in the world can lay claim to the word unique, it’s the Himalayan mountain kingdom of Bhutan. Where every other government in the world views economic growth, measured via Gross Domestic Product (GDP), as the indicator of its success, this landlocked region nestled between Tibet, Nepal and the Indian state of Sikkim has declared that its yardstick is GNH, or Gross National Happiness.

Tourists are welcome as part of groups (or escorted individuals) and account for its second-largest industry – but they are still few and far between. All tourism must be approved by the government as being environmentally and socially sustainable, and as such the idyllic landscape – scattered villages surrounded by terraced paddy fields, soaring snow-covered peaks and stone mountain fortresses with foreboding iron doors – remains almost untouched by industrialization. The close familial bonds, religious devotion expressed publicly in an endless array of colourful festivals, and the shifting of the seasons all still define daily life for most of the people you’ll encounter.

Bhutan also has some of the best trekking in the world, from short visits to the villages in the sacred Bumthang Valley to the awesome Lunana Snowman trek – a 28-day high-altitude trek into the most inaccessible parts of the country, home to yaks, yeti legends and the vast mountain of Gangkar Punsum. Head off into the beautiful hills and you’ll probably come across more yaks than fellow walkers.

If you're planning a trip, the national tourism website of Bhutan is a good place to start: www.tourism.gov.bt .

Painted cliff formation on Maria island off the eastern coast of Tasmania © Sasapee/Shutterstock

“No cars, no shops, no worries” was how the flyer for Maria Island National Park read a few years ago. But it forgot to mention no people. If part of the park’s appeal is casting yourself adrift on an island that has barely changed since Europeans first waded through its aquamarine shallows around 250 years ago, another is that most tourists haven’t yet cottoned on that it’s there.

Because it’s 14km offshore – and only accessible by a small ferry – Maria (pronounced “Ma- rye -a”) remains a hauntingly beautiful Treasure Island while the much-lauded Freycinet National Park just up the coast is besieged by coach tours. And it is the isolation that saw it swing from convict sink of the British Empire to Victorian health retreat, preserving the wildlife in the eucalyptus rainforest and making it Tasmania’s very own Noah’s Ark for endangered species.

Take to any number of paths and Forester kangaroo, pademelons and Bennetts wallabies can be seen bouncing away into the bush. Cape Barren geese, a breed near extinction in the 1950s, trim the grass by the jetty – just one from a spotter’s book of rare birdlife – while in a marine park you can see dolphins, seals or even whales in season. Of course, you can also just loaf about on some spectacular sands such as Reidle Beach, the sort of improbably perfect arc you ache to tell friends about. Or on second thoughts, maybe not.

Maria Island Walk ( www.mariaislandwalk.com.au provides four-day luxury treks on the island from October to April.

The little known Tarkine region in the remote northwest of Tasmania is almost certainly the next big thing in Australian wilderness. In 2004 the Worldwide Fund for Nature described the state’s last frontier as “a world beyond human memory, a living link to the primeval supercontinent of Gondwana”. Three years later Australian TV’s Channel Nine called it “the last unknown wilderness in Australia”.

Only on foot do you appreciate the epic quality of the Tarkine. To traverse the southern hemisphere’s largest temperate rainforest, camping beneath moss-bearded myrtles and bathing in waterfalls of chilled spring water, is to timewarp into a world of myth forged when mankind was just a glint in evolution’s eye. To hike 30km up its empty coastline is to be humbled, whether by evidence of tens of thousands of years of Aboriginal existence or by waves that travel unopposed from Patagonia.

Everyone loves a travel secret. Yet after a moratorium on logging was lifted in 2003, the Tarkine is “still wild, still threatened”, as the conservation slogan puts it. This may be one secret to shout about.

Tarkine Trails ( www.tarkinetrails.com.au operates the six-day Rainforest Track and five-day Wild Coast trip from November to April.

Experience New Zealand's best wilderness lodges

Tucked away in the middle of the 27,000-square-kilometre New Zealand World Heritage Area, 300km from Queenstown, Lake Moeraki Lodge is one of the great places to get away from it all. The light, airy rooms have views out to the surrounding rainforest, while four more luxurious suites overlook the churning rapids of the Moeraki River. From here you can kayak through orchid-filled rainforests, go on nocturnal hikes to look for glow-worms or make the short trek to Robinson Crusoe beach, a suitably deserted stretch of tree-fringed sand.

The lodge is one of two established by the former director of New Zealand’s Royal Forest and Bird Society – the other, Arthur’s Pass Wilderness Lodge, is 130km from Christchurch. Perched between the Waimakariri River Valley and the Southern Alps, the accommodation here has panoramas that are hard to beat. During the day guests can have a picnic on mountain meadows carpeted in subalpine flowers, or trek to the many waterfalls that cascade down Mount Arthur. The lodge even has a working merino-wool sheep farm, and depending on the time of year you can help out with the lambing, weaning or shearing.

Both lodges are open Aug–May; for rates, reservations and activities see www.wildernesslodge.co.nz .

The Solomon Islands is one of the least-visited nations in the world: as a consequence there is barely any tourism infrastructure and what exists is basic. But those adventurous enough to visit this scattering of tropical islands are guaranteed a memorable trip: with hardly anyone else around you can paddle in dug-out canoes, hike through virgin rainforest, dive some of the most spectacular reefs in the world and stay in simple village guesthouses, such as those built on stilts above the waters of the world’s longest lagoon, Marovo. Conservation organizations, such as WWF, have been working with village landowners to encourage them to start small tourism enterprises based around these activities, rather than give way to foreign logging companies intent on taking valuable and rare timber.

One of the islands under threat, Tetepare, is the largest uninhabited island in the South Pacific. Over 150 years ago its residents fled, for reasons unknown, but their descendants continue to visit the island to hunt and fish. Rare skinks, turtles and birds nest on this safe haven, where, so far, the loggers have not been welcome. Small numbers of hardy tourists can visit and stay overnight in a handful of simple palm-and-wood chalets, with visitor fees used to create jobs and provide improved healthcare for Solomon Islanders. You must be accompanied by a guide at all times, who will come across with you in the boat.

You can help the island’s wardens (who are also the resident chefs, making simple fish and rice suppers for guests) with scientific research like counting coconut crabs or monitoring turtles; snorkel over giant clams and coral gardens or hike through one of Earth’s last untouched island wildernesses. If you like your experiences removed from urban life, then this may be the perfect getaway.

For directions from Honiara, reservations, a list of what to bring and prices see www.tetepare.org .

Let's Roam Explorer

The Most Secluded Vacation Spots in the World

Need a getaway from the stress? We have gathered all the most incredible secluded vacation spots for the relaxing vacation of your dreams!

trips to get away from it all

There are days when all you can think about is a getaway to an uninhabited island somewhere far far away from here. You know those days… when your alarm didn’t go off, you got a parking ticket overnight, your coworkers are getting on your last nerve, and your boss is the absolute worst. It’s on these days that our minds drift away to the world’s most secluded vacation spots, where no one will talk to us before we’ve had our coffee, and afternoons include no tasks but hammock naps on a sandy beach. If today is that kind of day, then you’re in luck. We are about to dive into the best, secluded getaways in the world, places where you can truly get off the beaten path and enjoy some silence surrounded by intense natural beauty.

Get away from it all with Let’s Roam!

One of America’s most secluded vacation spots is the massive Denali National Park. Explore this vast wilderness on our app-guided scavenger hunt “ Ascend to New Heights at Denali Park .” You’ll explore Alaska Railroad Depot, Denali Visitor Center, and Mount Healy Overlook Trail on a fun-filled adventure of brain-teasing trivia and amusing photo challenges. It’s the perfect way to spend a day in one of the United States’ great wilderness areas!

In this list, we’ve tried to be as inclusive as possible. Some of these hidden gems are incredibly rustic, with the most basic of amenities, meant for intrepid travelers. It’s important to note that some of the world’s most secluded destinations are hard to get to, have little tourist infrastructure, and can therefore be quite expensive. That is not always the case, but it bears true for a few on the list.

In contrast, some of these destinations are luxurious resorts in a fairly untraveled part of the world, fit for the most romantic getaways. Some require long, grueling hikes. Others, a short ride on a seaplane. We’ve included specific accommodations in a few destinations and left others open for you to pick the spot that suits you. What they all have in common is an overall atmosphere of isolation and rest!

1. Cabañas Ecoturisticas Costa Maya- Xahuayxol, Mexico

Starry night and milky way over Cabanas Ecoturisticas Costa Maya-one of the most secluded vacation spots in the world

Located deep in the south of the Mayan Riviera, Cabañas Ecoturisticas Costa Maya is a rustic resort about 45 minutes south of the cruise ship port of Mahahual. You’ll need to rent a car, but it’s worth the drive. Most of the journey is paved, save the last mile or so. Once you conquer the dirt road, you’ll emerge from the jungle to a patch of white sandy beach and clear waters, shaded with towering palms. It’s absolute paradise.

With the ocean at your front, the jungle at your back, and nothing but a few local bungalows nearby, the resort feels far more secluded than the short drive from the port would imply. Calling it a resort is a stretch through. The complex consists of a handful of cabañas with very few amenities. There’s no real electricity. Wifi is only available at the restaurant cabaña, and running water is cold only. However, if you’re truly looking to get away from the trappings of modernity, then you can’t beat this spot. The resort restaurant serves up surprisingly good meals, and the staff builds a big bonfire at night for guests to converse over and stargaze. They also offer free snorkeling gear and kayaks to guests, and there’s moderately good snorkeling just off the shore. If you travel by campervan or have camping equipment, there’s also a campsite on the grounds. There are large pythons, panthers, and saltwater crocodiles in the jungle surrounding the resort, so if you go for a morning run, keep your eyes peeled.

The nearby fishing village of Xcalak has budget-friendly snorkeling tours with local fishermen that take you to world-class diving spots. The marine life is plentiful, the coral bluffs are huge, and the water is warm and clear. The tours generally take you to the brackish canal between Mexico and Belize where you can snorkel in the mangroves, and see freshwater crocodiles and huge groups of elegant eagle rays.

Writer Note: This area of Mexico is one of my favorite retreats. Not only is the staff amazing, and the property stunning, but some of the best snorkeling on the Great MesoAmerican Reef is located in Xcalak. This ecoresort also happens to be one of the best places on Earth for stargazing. On a clear night, travelers are treated to naked-eye views of the Milky Way from a hammock on the beach, it doesn’t get much better than that! The only negative is that trash often washes up on the beach, but guests and staff alike just make it their morning mission to pick it up and dispose of it, leaving the beach pristine for the rest of the day.

2. The Greek Isle of Patmos

Two goats overlooking blue waters of Patmos Island, one of the most secluded vacation spots in the world.

The Greek Islands are paradise on Earth. Their perfectly clear waters, historic architecture, fresh Mediterranean food, and vibrant culture have been drawing in tourists for millennia. However, there are so many Greek Islands that the shy traveler can easily escape the hoards of tourists by choosing a less-popular island.

The Dodecanese Isles are located in the far east of the Greek territory, just off the coast of Turkiye. They are stunning islands, steeped in history, and far from the party nights of Mykonos and Santorini. Patmos is a jewel in the Dodecanese crown. The island is famous for its biblical linkage. It’s the spot where the apostle John was exiled, and where he wrote the book of Revelation. The island is, to this day, operated by a sect of monks, and they have control over the tourist infrastructure, so there are no casinos, no major resorts, and no clubs on Patmos. It’s simple, island living with the locals and a few pilgrims that come to see the cave of John and the monastery.

Where to Stay

The mountain town of Chora is a good place to stay, with dozens of traditional Greek restaurants hovering over the cliffside, boutique shops, and charming bed and breakfasts. Outdoor plazas, with seating flowing into the walkways, are the gathering ground of locals, ouzo in hand. The island also boasts ancient windmills, just as cute as those on Mykonos, with a much more stunning view! There are also some cheaper guesthouses in the hills on the other side of the marina, from which you can walk down to the restaurants on the harbor, which are more local and authentic.

A Beach Like No Other

The best beach on the island, Psili Ammos, is even more secluded. You park your scooter or car in the lot, open the farmer’s gate (remember to shut it behind you), and follow the goat path through fields of rocky pastureland overlooking pristine sandy coves and the sparkling sea. It’s an incredible 30-minute hike that ends at a nudist-friendly, golden sand beach with perfectly calm waters. There’s one family-run eatery on the beach that serves up cold beer and traditional fare, and you’ll spend your afternoons soaking up the sun in a bit of paradise that you may have all to yourself.

3. Lapa Rios Rainforest Ecolodge-Costa Rica

Two scarlet macaws playing in one of the most secluded vacation spots in the world, the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a popular vacation destination for outdoor adventure enthusiasts, families looking for a budget-friendly tropical vacation, wildlife lovers, and honeymooners. Despite its popularity, much of the country still offers secluded retreats. Tourists tend to congregate in a handful of spots, leaving the rest of this incredible country untainted for those looking to get away from it all.

The Osa Peninsula is the wildest and most uninhabited portion of Costa Rica, located deep on the South Pacific Coast. In order to get there, travelers must rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle and take a pot-hole-ridden dirt road that parallels the coast. The peninsula is heavily forested and packed with tropical wildlife. The little town of Drake Bay offers guided tours into the jungle, a couple of nice restaurants, and some cheap accommodations, but if you truly want to get away, head for Lapa Rios Ecolodge in Puerto Jimenez.

Luxury Treehouses

Lapa Rios protects 1,000 acres of the private rainforest reserve, and they offer an incredible array of accommodations ranging from deluxe bungalows, with private treetop canopy decks and outdoor rain showers, to their new premiere villas that boast gigantic decks with a private plunge pool and sweeping ocean views. All the accommodations are luxurious with high-quality bedding, Wifi, and modern tropical decor. Lapa Rios is paradise in every use of the word, but it doesn’t come cheap. At well over $1,000 per night, even in the low season, get ready to throw down a pretty penny, especially by Costa Rican standards. If that is a bit out of your spectrum, remember you can easily score a private room with two full beds in one of the lovely guesthouses in Drake Bay for less than $30/night.

Costa Rica is a top-notch spot for spotting wild critters, but it’s not the only one! Check out “ The World’s Top 15 Destinations for Wildlife Viewing .”

4. Amankora, Bhutan

The mystical mountains of Bhutan were off-limits for most travelers for so long that the entire region is steeped in mystery to this day. Thankfully, Bhuta finally opened its beautiful borders to adventurous travelers, and its tourism industry boomed rapidly. Being so isolated from the outside world, Bhutan escaped much of the technological pollution the rest of us now consider normal.

Another luxury spot on the list, Amankora is a series of pristine hotels located throughout Bhutan. The lodge at Thimphu mirrors a traditional dzong fortress. It features 16 suites with king beds, wood-burning stoves, luxurious modern decor, and high-end bathrooms. Though secluded in the hills, Thimphu is just a short drive to the capital for some shopping and attractions. The area is interwoven with mountain biking and hiking trails.

The price is close to $2500 per night, but it does include all meals, both in route and during your stay, all beverages, full concierge services including flight reservations, itinerary planning, and visa assistance, use of the spa facilities, traditional archery lessons, private lectures on Buddhism, and a visit to the traditional village of Doderak. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

5. Baxter State Park-Maine, USA

Now, let’s venture to one of the most beautiful portions of the East Coast of the United States. Baxter State Park is located at the top of the Appalachian Trail in the heavily forested, northern reaches of Maine. Baxter is a technical hiker’s dream. The Knife’s Edge Trail is a fun outing with almost 3,500 feet of elevation gain, cliff drops on either side of you much of the way. Due to the high altitude and latitude, the northern lights are often visible from this area.

Baxter is a wilderness area. Campsites do have natural water, but no running water. There are no showers or facilities, only outhouses. There are some basic cabins in the more popular areas. Camping in the backcountry is mostly wooden lean-tos. You’ll need to get reservations for popular campsites and trails in the park. You’ll need to pack in and out all your bedding and cooking gear, as well as some way to filter water. Needless to say, Baxter is for outdoorsmen who want to be alone with nature.

6. Caladesi Island State Park-Florida

Florida is an extremely popular destination for both U.S. citizens and internationals. It’s not exactly known for its quiet beaches. Key West draws millions of visitors to its Caribbean waters, and Miami is an international party destination, but there are a few places in the “Sunshine State” where you can find some privacy. Caladesi Island, a barrier island on the Gulf Coast, west of Tampa, is an exception. It’s only accessible by a private boat or ferry ride. Caladesi boasts 3 miles of pristine and natural beaches, which is another rarity in the state.

The island features a few nature paths for exploring and miles of mangrove forests for kayaking or paddleboarding. One little store, the Shore Shack, sells the basics. There are no island resorts, not even camping or basic accommodations in Caladesi. The only way to stay the night on this remote island is to rent a boat slip in the marina and boat camp. For some, that may sound impractical. For others, it’s a great adventure. One man’s trash…

7. Sangha Lodge, Dzanga Bai-Central African Republic

Dzanga Sangha Reserve is a prime destination for big game viewing and gorilla trekking. It’s also home to one of the world’s largest herds of forest elephants, who commonly hang out in Dzanga Bai, a clearing in the thick forest. The reserve has escaped the mass tourism of some of the bigger gorilla treks in Rwanda and Uganda. However, there’s tourist infrastructure in place providing interesting and rare opportunities.

Through Sanga Lodge , visitors will experience guided boat tours of the Sangha and Yobe rivers, visits deep into the forest to overnight with the Ba’aka tribe, a tour of the White Pangolin research facility, and guided gorilla treks. The list of wildlife regularly seen and heard from the lodge is astonishing! Sangha Lodge, as you might imagine is rustic, but it does include hot running water, and full meals with clean water provided. The well-appointed bungalows feature large beds, private decks overlooking the Sangha River, and ensuite bathrooms. Due to the remote nature of the lodge, all supplies are brought in by plane, and tours are arranged as needed. This is one of those bucket-list places where it’s most cost-efficient to travel in a group.

A Word to the Wise

If you’re wondering if the Central Africa Republic is safe to visit, the answer is much of the country is not. You’ll see warnings, and you should take heed of them. However, it’s also important to note that the region north of the capital of Bangui is the hotbed of unrest in the country. Dzanga Sangha is located in the far southwest of the country, separated from the unrest by miles of wilderness, impassible roads, and large river systems. This region is considered safe for tourists.

Take a look at “ The Best Safaris in Africa ” for a few more fabulous big-game sightings!

8. NamibRand Reserve-Namibia

NamibRand is a nature reserve and International Dark Sky Reserve in Southern Namibia, the oldest desert on Earth. It boasts incredible red sand dunes, lies in a majority migratory path for African herd animals, and features 5 separate accommodation options for glamping. All accommodations on the reserve are subject to strict bed restrictions and rules for environmental impact.

In recent years, Namibia has exploded in tourism. So, while you’re in the remote regions of an incredible desert, you can also take a hot air balloon ride over the wilderness. The money you spend gets poured into conservation and wildlife research, so you can generally feel good about spending your cash at NamibRand.

A Cultural Alternative

To really get away from it all, you could combine your trip to the Namib with a venture into “Bushmanland” and visit the ancient Ju/’hoansi at Nhoma Camp . This highly-rated cultural experience allows visitors to spend time learning the ancient wisdom of the tribe, while a large portion of the proceeds goes directly to the tribe. The small tented camp does little to damage the environment and all tourism here is directed towards preserving and maintaining the ancient culture of the people of the region, rather than changing it. As with all cultural travel, please be aware, respectful, and ready to live as the locals do without complaint. This kind of travel is not for the faint at heart.

Traveling in a culturally respectful way is of the utmost importance for those visiting secluded areas, check out our travel tips for becoming a more culture-conscious traveler !

9. Pitcairn Island-South Pacific

Pitcairn Island is the only inhabited spit in the greater Pitcairn Islands of the South Pacific. When we say Pitcairn is secluded, we mean it’s 3300 miles away from its administrative headquarters in Auckland, New Zealand, 4100 miles from Panama, and 1350 from its close neighbor, Tahiti. Pitcairn has a standing population hovering around 50 people who descend from Tahitians and mutineers. There’s only one small town on the island, so it’s the epitome of quiet.

To visit Pitcairn, you’ll need to hop a ride on the cargo supply ship from Auckland, which generally runs a couple of times a month. Once on the island, scuba diving nearby shipwrecks and the gigantic marine reserve, hiking in the caves, ATV tours, and whale watching are the name of the game! If you truly want to experience the local vibe of Pitcairn, book your accommodation in one of their handful of homestays. You’ll get a semi-private or private space, depending on which place you choose, shared meals, laundry, wifi, and transfer on the passenger’s vessel. The average for all this is around $150 per night.

10. The Keeling Islands-Australia

Owned by Australia, but floating closer to Indonesia, the Keeling Islands, affectionately known as “the Cocos” are absolutely gorgeous. The islands are touted as “Australia’s last unspoiled paradise.” Visitors are treated to pristine white sand beaches, bright turquoise waters, and a plethora of outdoor activities. The Cocos are famous for world-class kitesurfing, fishing, and snorkeling. A quick canoe trip will land you on your choice of 25 uninhabited islands for a day.

Accommodations do sell out , as there aren’t that many of them, but they range from $200-$500 per night. Unless you’re sailing your own yacht, you’ll be arriving on one of the biweekly flights from Perth. Once on the island, there’s some public transportation, or you can hire a car for the world’s most beautiful road trip. Tours are easily booked through your accommodation.

11. Moloka’i-Hawaii, USA

The little island of Molokai is one of the five populated Hawaiian Islands. It’s the perfect spot for nature lovers! There are no luxury resorts, not even a stoplight. Molokai was once home to a large population of lepers, perhaps we have that sad fact to thank for its stunning isolation today.

Moloka’i is tiny, just 38 miles long and 10 miles wide, but it’s home to the tallest sea cliffs in the world, towering waterfalls, and the world’s largest fringe coral reef. Most of the Native Hawaiian population retains their rural way of life and fiercely protects their land and traditional culture (Moloka’i is the birthplace of hula). The island has multiple lovely Airbnbs, at all price ranges, so finding accommodation won’t be difficult. Make sure to a guided tour of the cliffs of Kalaupapa National Historical Park and visit one of the biggest white sand beaches in Hawaii, Pāpōhaku Beach.

12. Ao Mai Ngam-Ko Surin Nuea, Thailand

Thailand is not exactly what we consider remote or secluded. It’s densely populated and wildly popular with travelers, but Mu Ko Surin National Park on the Ko Surin Islands is an escape from the chaos. Ko Surin boasts the clearest waters in Thailand, gorgeous white sands, and dense tropical plant life. It also has an incredible, shallow-water coral reef, offering up some of the most impressive snorkeling in the region.

Most of the accommodation options in the national park are tent camps, so be prepared to rough it. The campsite on Ko Surin Nuea is often surrounded by reef sharks and gets few visitors, so you might have them all to yourself. Whale Sharks are another frequent visitor to the island. Popular dive trips are available to Richelieu Rock as well. Due to the treacherous monsoon season, the islands are only open to visitors from November to April.

13. Aro Ha Wellness Retreat-New Zealand

Back to the resort folks for a bit… let’s head for the rugged landscapes of New Zealand. Aro Ha Wellness Retreat is buried in the Southern Alps and is a shrine of serenity. It’s a full-service wellness center focused on helping you create lifelong healthy habits. Guests are treated to guided yoga and meditation, incredibly beautiful hiking, cooking lessons, strength training, infrared saunas, and daily massages. Sounds pretty good, right?

14. Shishapangma Base Camp-Tibet

If you have always dreamed of conquering one of the world’s greatest peaks, but you don’t want to deal with the massive tours of Everest base camp, then head into Central Tibet instead. Shishapangma is the 14th highest peak on Earth and the tallest to lie completely in Tibet. Thanks to its proximity to Everest, this lonely peak is often overlooked by international travelers, but the trekking is world-class. Shishapangma is also widely considered to be one of the easiest 8,000+ meter summits.

Trekking tours generally leave from Kathmandu, Nepal, or Lhasa, Tibet. You’ll have to acquire your visa and guide through the Chinese Tibet Mountaineering Association . Like all trekking in the Himalayas, the porter and guide fees can be hefty, but this Shisapangma has one of the most epic views in the world!

15. Koh Thmei Resort-Cambodia

When you think of Cambodia, you either shutter at the remembrance of the reign of the Khmer Rouge, or you daydream of sunrise at Angkor Wat. However, there’s so much more to this stunning country. If you want to get away from the swaths of tourists at the ancient temples, head for the island of Koh Thmei.

There’s only one resort on the island , consisting of 8 primitive beachfront bungalows in pure paradise. As a part of the Ream National Park, the island is surrounded by playful dolphins, sea eagles, and 150 species of other wild birds. Bungalows feature hammocks, private bathrooms, large terraces, and fans for cooling. There’s free wifi, electricity during waking hours, and a restaurant that serves a surprising array of dishes, including vegan and custom options. If you’re looking to get away from it all, with a beach bungalow that costs just $15, then Koh Thmei is your spot, but go now, as rumor has it some large developers will soon be moving in.

How to Get There

For the perfect weekend getaway from Phnom Penh, you’ll take the bus on a 6-hour journey or a private taxi towards Sihanoukville. Get off at Ou Chamnar and head for the Koh Kchhang Fishing Village boat pier. Here you’ll take a one-way boat to the island.

16. Siroktabe Island-Indonesia

Docastaways offers deserted island experiences on several uninhabited islands. Siroktabe is one of their most adventurous. The little forested island has a small ring of white sand beach, shallow, warm waters, and complete isolation. Your guide will ferry you to the island, and leave you there where you’ll fish for your supper, build your own shelter (or borrow one from a previous camper) and live out your nights in complete isolation.

The great part is that the Docastaway team is just a satellite call away if anything too uncomfortable happens. They’ll get you to the secret location by car and canoe ride, and be available on a nearby island if you get into trouble. The entire experience is less than $200 per night.

17. Psili Ammos Restaurant & Studios-Naxos

Naxos is one of the larger Greek Islands and a popular transport hub. However, most of the tourists never leave the harbor town of Chora and miss out on the incredible mountains and secluded beaches of historic Naxos. Naxos is famous for its dairy products and is the one and only producer of the fruity alcoholic spirit known as Kitron. Naxos has a charm all its own and is one of those destinations that keeps calling you back.

For an easy, but isolated vacation, book a room at Psili Ammos Restaurant and Studios . They are simple apartments with private bathrooms, a kitchenette, and a balcony with ocean views. The rooms are nothing fancy, but it doesn’t matter because you’re going to be outdoors.

Outside your door, you walk across a wide swatch of sand to the most perfect beach, flanked by rock formations, lined with umbrellas, and for most of the day completely yours and yours alone. There’s one part of the morning and late afternoon when the local goat herd traverses the beach to get to their feeding pastures in the surrounding hills. There are also wonderful hiking paths into the rocks and along the coast if you need a break from the waves. Rental cars in Naxos are cheap, and the drive is about 30 minutes from Chora.

Writer Note : Naxos, and specifically this guesthouse, is one of my personal favorite escapes. We return here often when we are feeling stressed or need a break. Psili Ammos is the perfect beach, whether you stay at the guesthouse, or just visit the beach and have dinner at the outdoor restaurant as a day trip from Chora.

18. Borsh, Albania

Man standing upon Hajii Bendo Mosque in the sunrays with the mountains of Borsh Albania

The Mediterranean coast of Albania is one of the world’s greatest hidden gems. The country is rich in culture, dotted with ancient historic ruins, and exceedingly friendly. Albania is one of the most budget-friendly destinations in Europe, with vacation rentals often coming in at less than $20 for a couple.

While Himare and Ksamil are lovely beach towns, the wide beach at Borsh is quiet and only visited by locals. The water is stunningly blue. White pebble beaches stretch on for miles. There are gorgeous hiking trails along the coast connecting separate coves. The beaches are flanked by the rolling mountains of the Southern Alps, and the little town has love coffee shops and cafes, as well as several seafood restaurants along the beachfront. Whether you enjoy a quiet week in Borsh or include it in a bigger Albanian road trip, you won’t regret your serene moments in this beautiful region!

19. Kite Ventana Ecoresort-La Ventana, Baja California Sur

Common area with outdoor seating, swing, and games at Kite Ventana in La Ventana, Mexico, one of the most secluded vacation spots on earth.

Kite Ventana is an extraordinary place, lovingly built and maintained by owner Brad. The complex is a completely off-grid desert paradise, but only a 3-minute walk from a natural hot-spring beach. The sunrise and sunset from the hilltop complex are awe-inspiring, especially when viewed from the wood-fueled hot tub or your outdoor soaking tub. The spaces range from a glamping tent to fully-furnished and modern rooms with queen beds, floor-to-ceiling windows, private patios, and ensuite baths. The communal kitchen is partially outdoors and includes a firepit with an outdoor sofa, swings, and a large bar for dining al fresco. Rooms are available for around $60/night.

The resort is flanked by gorgeous hiking trails and is just a 10-minute drive into the town of La Ventana which is a world-famous location for kite and windsurfers. La Ventana is a rural area, but due to its popularity with young surfers, there are several great restaurants and a plethora of camping spots for the RV crowd.

20. Adishi, Georgia

This one is for the mountain folk. The isolated village of Adishi is located in the Upper Svaneti region of Georgia, in the Greater Caucasus Mountains. Georgia, as a whole, is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets! It boasts gorgeous mountain landscapes, a world-class wine industry, and incredible historic sites. The small village features 1000-year-old churches with ancient frescoes, traditional stone houses, and a few fortresses sprinkled in. There’s even a small glacier within hiking distance and wild skiing and snowshoeing are popular in the winter months.

You’ll need to take a private taxi from the town of Mestia, which will run you 40-50 euros. The area is prone to avalanches and flooding in the winter (4 out of 5 of the ancient village have been destroyed), so there are only around 20 residents in the winter and 60-70 in the summer. The landscape is stunning, and visitors are treated to a truly local experience. There are excellent guesthouses available on Booking.com for less than $30/night.

21. Lofoten Islands-Norway

Colorful fishing villages, cold-water surfing, frequent killer whale sightings, aurora borealis tours, horseback riding in the waves, Viking ship rides, and golfing at midnight… sound fun? Well, you can conquer all this and some of the most amazing rock climbing experiences on the planet with a visit to the Lofoten Islands of Norway . During the summer months, you’ll have a full 24 hours a day to explore, as you enjoy the midnight sun.

We recommend staying in the quirky village of Henningsvær, which has wonderful eateries, small art galleries, and access to all the necessary tours. Svolvær is the largest “city” and is also a great option. Make sure to take the tour to Trollsford and spend at least one evening in a traditional rorbu on the sea.

22. Stadtlandet and Vågsøy-Norway

Staying in Norway, we move further south to Stadtlandet and Vågsøy. The first lies on a peninsula of the mainland, north of Bergen. The second is a nearby island. The area is popular with local surfers and also features three historic lighthouses and one of the oldest monasteries in Norway. It’s a stunning landscape of deep fjords, golden beaches surrounded by towering sea cliffs, and small villages where you’ll feel right at home.

23. Pangkor Laut Island Resort-Malaysia

Pangkor Laut is a private island off the West Coast of Malaysia that offers secluded beaches, 300 acres of wilderness, and high-end service. The only development on the island is the resort of the same name which features a series of bungalows in the jungle and a few sea villas on stilts. Each of the sea villas has its own wooden walkway connecting it back to the island, and the forest bungalows boast large terraces with stunning views.

The onsite restaurants serve up fresh-made meals with local products, and there are 7 dining options to choose from ranging from tables by the beach to five-star terrace establishments. The resort includes a full-service spa and wellness center that utilizes traditional Malaysian and other Eastern techniques and multiple gardens with an infinity pool and waterfront views. If you book early, garden and hill villas run about $200/night, and sea villas are approximately $280. Spa treatments are very reasonably priced at around $35 and breakfast is included in the price. The resort is open year-round, and there’s no bad time to visit!

24. Big Bend National Park-Texas, USA

Big Bend National Park is an 800,000-acre wilderness in the far western portion of Texas, far from its famous big cities. It’s an internationally recognized Darky Sky Park and is definitely secluded. The stunning landscape features winding rivers, the Chisos mountains, and vast expanses of the Chihuahuan Desert. Popular with kayakers and hikers, the park is a retreat for those looking for outdoor adventure.

Aside from camping, there’s only one accommodation option in Big Bend. A stay at Chisos Mountain Lodge offers a range of accommodations from stand-along cottages to lodge rooms. They aren’t fancy, but they’re comfortable. As the only cabins in the massive park, they fill up fast, so be sure to book early!

25. Owyhee Canyonlands-Oregon, USA

Oregon is famous for its craft breweries, iconic coastline, and stunning waterfalls. However, if you venture away from the coast, away from any major highway, and far from cell service, you’ll find the wilderness haven of Owyhee Canyonlands. One of the most remote places in the entirety of the United States, visitors can experience a true backcountry vacation.

The rugged region consists of more than 2 million acres of desert. Horseback riding is available on the rim of Oregon’s Grand Canyon, while white water rafting occurs in the depths of the canyon. Of course, camping and hiking are also popular pastimes. The river is also a hot spot for anglers. Wildlife lovers will have the chance to see wild elk and a large variety of birds. Owyhee also claims some of the darkest skies in the lower 48, making for some seriously good stargazing.

There are four major campsites in Owyhee of varying amenities, with Anderson Crossing being the most remote.

14 Incredible Destinations If You Need Peace and Relaxation

trips to get away from it all

Daily stress can take its toll on your mind and body, which is why sometimes you just need to get completely out of your element to really relax. A peaceful getaway can not only rejuvenate your body but also clear your mind so you're totally refreshed when it's finally time to get back to the real world. And isn't that the point of taking a vacation in the first place?

The most relaxing place to go, however, depends on your personal preference. For some, a relaxing vacation might mean soaking up the sun on a tropical beach, while for others it might mean following a trail on a windy coastline with few other people in sight. No matter where you go, you're bound to find a place that's dedicated to your tranquility. We scoured our favorite places around the world and found the destinations where we hope you will find your next relaxing vacation.

Kauai, Hawaii

There are many relaxing places in Hawaii, but Kauai is particularly special. Known as the Garden Island, here you can find empty beaches like Lumahai Beach, as well as breathtaking landscapes like the vast Waimea Canyon State Park . You can also book a sunset cruise of the Nāpali Coast with a tour company like Holo Holo Charters to appreciate the island's unique geology from the water. To help you make your vacation the most relaxing possible, there are many wonderful resorts on the island like Koloa Landing , where you can enjoy sprawling grounds and spacious rooms and suites big enough for the whole family.

Cape Elizabeth, Maine

What could be more idyllic than strolling the cape and exploring lighthouses? This town is the home of the Cape Elizabeth Light (or Two Lights Lighthouse) which has been active since 1874. In addition to the interesting history and classic New England architecture, Cape Elizabeth is one of the best places to get juicy lobster. You will find plenty of tranquility here on the rocks, and also at accommodations like Inn by the Sea , one of Maine's best luxury hotels with relaxing in-room amenities like cozy fireplaces and soaking tubs.

Banff National Park, Canada

Banff National Park is chock-full of amazing scenery and crystalline lakes, but Lake Louise might be the best (and most relaxing) of them all. Campers and hikers alike can settle by its perfectly blue waters and gaze at mountain views that seem almost too pristine to be real — luckily, it is. And it's quite possibly the perfect relaxing vacation for lovers of the great outdoors, whether you want to hike or just set yourself up in a landmark hotel like Fairmont Banff Springs .

Tenorio Volcano National Park, Costa Rica

Located in northern Costa Rica , Tenorio Volcano National Park is one of the country's most incredible natural wonderlands, without the crowds that tend to go to parks closer to the coast. Here, Rio Celeste is known for its vivid blue color, almost unlike any other waterfall in the world. The bright color is caused by a reaction of the volcanic chemicals in the water, but against the tropical backdrop and rushing waters, it looks magical. Nearby, you'll also find one of the most beautiful jungle hotels in the world, the Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel .

East Sussex, England

Lovers of pastoral landscapes and dramatic coastlines will find their paradise in the southern reaches of England. Rolling green hills and proximity to the English Channel make Seven Sisters the quintessential countryside you've read about in Victorian novels. You'll also find the iconic white chalk cliffs if you decide to take a stroll there. For golfers who love nothing more than to unwind on the green, the nearby East Sussex National Resort boasts two championship courses.

Nordfjord, Norway

Nordfjord is one of the top destinations in Norway thanks to its breathtaking views. Visitors can take a long, slow pleasure cruise along the fjord and see a wide array of sights including glaciers, mountains, and the open sea — all in just a two-hour trip . If you visit during the winter, you may be able to see the northern lights , which will no doubt add to the already awe-inspiring scenery of the fjords.

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Makito Umekita/Travel + Leisure

The Blue Lagoon is by far the most popular tourist destination that Iceland has to offer. This geothermal spa is located in a lava field and attached to a world-renowned resort , where you can soak in the warm waters even when the temperatures are freezing outside. Choose the Lagoon Suite for direct access to the waters from your room. After you've soaked your stress away, Iceland has many empty and scenic landscapes that you can explore during your relaxing vacation.

The Ionian Islands, Greece

Home to the Instagram-famous Navagio Beach, the Ionian Islands are some of the most popular for travelers in Greece . You'll find the most peace and quiet on the under-the-radar island of Paxos where there are few resorts but many lovely vacation homes. On the island of Zakynthos, there are many other towns and beaches gorgeous enough to make anyone scrolling through your Instagram swoon with envy, including Navagio and the remains of the cargo ship MV Panagiotis that got stuck there in 1980 during a storm.

Provence, France

Lose yourself in the gorgeous vineyards and captivating views of the Alps while you're in this famous French region — but know it's not all wine here. Provence is celebrated for its biodiversity and famous for olive groves, pine forests, and lavender fields, as well as grapes. Nice, Marseille, the French Riviera, and Avignon are all popular places to visit while in the region. Settle in a lush countryside retreat for your relaxing vacation like the lavender-surrounded Coquillade Provence Resort & Spa , named the best resort in France by Travel + Leisure readers in 2022 .

Whitsunday Islands National Park, Australia

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

Australia is a massive country with lots of wide-open spaces to plan a relaxing vacation, but if you go offshore to the Whitsunday Islands, located off the coast of Queensland near the Great Barrier Reef, you can visit one of the world's most beautiful beaches . On Whitehaven Beach, the pure white silica sand and emerald waters create a gorgeous palette of colors that is a feast for the senses. If you go north to Hill Inlet, you'll see a mesmerizing swirl of white and blue, created by shifting sands and water.

Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

In Kenya, many travelers visit the Maasai Mara in hopes of seeing wild animals and to experience a stay in a luxury safari camp. Wild animals may not be everyone's idea of relaxation, but adventurers in need of some repose can journey to the Saruni Samburu Safari Camp , which offers a Wellbeing Space with a pool, spa, and dining areas. After a morning game drive, you can let the adrenaline simmer down with a spa treatment or a few sips of wine with a view.

Bali, Indonesia

In Indonesia, the island of Bali has become synonymous these days with yoga retreats in the jungles of Ubud and the beaches of Canggu. You'll find plenty of luxury resorts and hotels on the island, as well as beaches and historic temples. Beyond enjoying the relaxed, coastal living that travelers have come to expect from a trip to Bali , capturing the colorful sunset (or sunrise) along the shallow waters of Sanur Beach is a must-do. Plus, we've already got the pack list you need to get started.

Ise Shima National Park, Japan

Located on the coastline east of Osaka , Ise Shima is a national park that encompasses a thriving mainland forest and many islands waiting to be explored. Peace and quiet don't begin to describe the beauty of Ise Jingu, a grand Shinto shrine located in the park and dedicated to the Japanese goddess Amaterasu. Even though it's a widely known tourist attraction, the shrine complex maintains its tranquility. It is one of the holiest places in Japan , and people often go there to revere its architecture, natural scenery, and historical significance.

Halong Bay, Vietnam

If you're looking for serene blue and green waters, look no further than Halong Bay. This beautiful body of water is most popular with boat lovers who want to spend some days on the water, or perhaps exploring the limestone islands and coastal forests. The area is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since it's home to dozens of species of plants and animals. You'll find lots of places to stay around the bay, but the best way to experience this destination is by hopping aboard a cruise ship so you can catch every angle of this relaxing destination.

Ready to start traveling, but aren't too keen on visiting a crowded destination? We can relate.

Since travel was put largely on pause, destinations around the world have been given a much-needed break to recoup from overtourism . This has certainly been a silver lining amid the chaos, but many people are badly in need of a change of scenery. Even more need an excuse to unplug, shut down Slack and decline Zoom calls.

If you're in search of some serious peace and quiet, want to avoid as many germs as possible and maybe just get a break from the news cycle, sometimes the best destination is the one with the fewest people around. It may take some extra miles or hours to get away from it all, but trust us: These crowd-free destinations are worth the effort.

Big Bend National Park, Texas

trips to get away from it all

If you're in the market for dark skies, wide-open spaces, river adventures, hikes and some breathtaking desert topography, look to West Texas (and we mean far west) to Big Bend National Park . Big Bend is so removed from bustling cities that, on certain nights, you can see 2,500 stars with just your eyes. For comparison, in a medium-sized city, you'll probably only spot a few hundred stars. In fact, Big Bend is often considered the best national park in the Lower 48 for stargazing.

It's also one of the best national parks to visit this time of year . Even during the winter, temperatures rarely drop below the low 40s at night, making it an ideal destination for backcountry camping.

But it's not just about starry nights at Big Bend. Be sure to budget time for some scenic drives, kayaking or canoeing on the Rio Grande and the 1.5-mile easy hike at Santa Elena Canyon for some stunning views. Just don't spend more than necessary on your national park vacation .

Where to stay: You're probably not cashing in your hotel points at Big Bend. This would, however, be a fun trip to rent an RV , book a campsite and go all-in on the intimate family fun. If that sounds like your idea of a vacation nightmare, there's the park's Chisos Mountains Lodge , but you need to book pretty far in advance.

Getting there: Big Bend isn't particularly close to any major airport, so you're going to get at least a little road-tripping in with this adventure. It's about a five-hour drive from El Paso (ELP) or a six-hour drive from San Antonio (SAT).

The Big Island, Hawaii

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

Hawaii reopened to U.S. travelers on Oct. 15, putting it back on the map for people seeking a tropical, secluded escape.

Typically, the island of Hawaii gets about 100,000 to 175,000 visitors per month (which is roughly the same number as Kauai ), but since the so-called Big Island is so, well, big, those visitors are pretty spread out. The Big Island is actually larger than all the other Hawaiian Islands combined, so whether you want to go to Hilo, Kona, Volcanoes National Park or a black sand beach, you're unlikely to encounter crowds in the same way you would on Oahu — especially since travel to the Aloha State has only recently resumed.

And there are barriers to entry that should effectively keep crowds to a minimum. Travelers to the Big Island who participate in the state's pre-arrivals testing program will avoid a mandatory 14-day quarantine but will need to take a second, free rapid antigen test at the airport upon arrival. A second negative result would allow the traveler to bypass mandatory self-isolation.

Volcanos National Park (Summer Hull / The Points Guy)

Where to stay: For an isolated, rustic experience, you can spend under $100 a night to stay in a small cabin at Volcanoes National Park. You'll have electricity, a light and an outdoor grill, but not much more.

Getting there: Many carriers have direct flights to Honolulu (HNL), including Southwest Airlines . But you can typically fly directly into Kona (KOA) or Hilo (ITO) on the Big Island from San Francisco International (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX) or even Seattle International (SEA) on Delta, United and Hawaiian. Just know that airlines are still in the process of resuming normally scheduled flights to Hawaii.

French Polynesia

trips to get away from it all

If what you're really looking for is an international retreat, French Polynesia might be as good as it gets -- especially since the islands are one of the few destinations welcoming U.S. travelers at this time.

Located just eight hours off the West Coast, French Polynesia isn't truly a world away, but it sure does feel that way. If you go, be sure and hire a boat to get out on the water. And, while Tahiti, Bora Bora and Moorea are the most popular islands in French Polynesia, you can certainly venture farther off the beaten bath if you wish.

While Tahiti's population is around 283,000 (as of a 2017 census), charming Huahine (technically two islands) has just a handful of villages and a total of 6,075 residents. It's easy to carve out your own piece of paradise here. There's a bridge between the isles and a sandspit during low tide. Eels, which are considered sacred to locals, frequent the waters here and it's your duty to stop by and greet these blue-eyed creatures during your visit.

There are some spectacular beaches on Huahine, plus Polynesian ruins, inexpensive lodging (for French Polynesia, anyway) and some very good restaurants. No matter where you travel, just be sure to pack a negative COVID-19 test (you'll also need to take another test four days after arrival) and a face mask.

Stay at the Conrad Bora Bora with a Hilton award (Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

Getting there: From the U.S. mainland, Papeete (PPT) is typically served from both San Francisco (SFO) and Los Angeles (LAX). From there, you'll take an Air Tahiti flight onward to the island of your choice, unless you want to visit Moorea, which is accessible by ferry. You have many options for using your miles to get to Tahiti, but your flights on Air Tahiti will likely need to be paid for with old-fashioned cash. It's not cheap.

Where to stay: The Conrad Bora Bora Nui is a great use of Hilton points (be sure and lock in Hilton Gold status from a card such as the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card for free breakfast). The St. Regis Bora Bora also gets pretty high marks. In any case, you're likely staying in a private villa, so you're a bit removed from people even when technically at a resort.

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Alaska

Photo by www.infinitahighway.com.br / Getty Images.

For nothing but sprawling, uninterrupted nature, head to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. The largest national park in the country at 13.2 million acres, it's also one of the least-visited, thanks to its incredible remoteness.

Here, the acre-to-human ratio is ideal for intrepid travelers who are seeking a completely unplugged getaway (fewer than 80,000 travelers visited in 2018, according to National Geographic ). This is a destination where serious outdoor enthusiasts can come to backpack, mountaineer, fish, boat, hike, and take in the vast splendor of the land.

Wrangell-St. Elias is a world of extremes: More than half of the highest peaks in North America can be found in this preserve. And there's no better way to appreciate the scale than by booking a "flightseeing" tour of the park. Reserve an air taxi for a backcountry drop-off, or book a tour operator based in Glennallen, McCarthy or Chitina. Really, an aerial tour will be the best way to take in the incredible scenery.

Photo by Nina Homberger courtesy of Facebook.

Where to stay: You probably won't be using points or miles to bed down at one of the wilderness lodges in Wrangell-St. Elias (such as the Ultima Thule Lodge , pictured above), so use a credit card (like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card) to get rid of at least part of any purchase that codes as travel on your monthly statement.

Or, pack your sleeping back and reserve one of the rustic cabins available through the National Park Service, most of which are reachable only by backcountry airstrip. Alaska is a highly-seasonal destination, so book your travel plans accordingly. And remember, all out-of-state visitors must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival.

Getting there: Whether you plan on meeting a tour guide in McCarthy or simply want to venture out on your own, you'll first want to fly into either Anchorage (ANC) or Fairbanks (FAI), which are usually served by major hubs like Los Angeles (LAX), Denver (DEN) and Seattle (SEA), among others.

North Captiva Island, Florida

You'll find the barrier island of North Captiva off Florida's gorgeous Gulf Coast in Lee County, just north of Captiva Island. The two were connected until a 1921 hurricane carved a channel -- now called Redfish Pass -- between them. This separation is exactly what you need if you're looking for remote and crowd-free vacation spots, as half of the island is protected land owned by the State of Florida.

If you can commit to North Captiva's remote location, you'll be rewarded with incredible beaches strewn with some of the prettiest shells you'll find on this planet. Bird-watching is also world-class here and, if you adore fishing, you won't ever want to go back home.

Where to stay: There are only about 300 homes on the island and no points hotels. Instead, you can rent a house with a private pool and even your own dock. You can review some of the vacation rental properties at North Captiva Island Club Resort .

Getting there: Fly into Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). There's no bridge from Captiva to North Captiva, also known as Upper Captiva, so the only way to get there is by boat (or small charter aircraft). From the airport, arrange for a private car service or use a ride-hailing app like Uber, to take you to Pine Island Marina on Pine Island (near Cape Coral) where you can board a ferry to North Captiva. Once on the island, you'll get around via foot, bike or electric golf cart.

Great Western Catskills, New York

trips to get away from it all

Depending on where you live, you may not have to venture all that far from home to escape the crowds. For decades, burnt-out New Yorkers have been heading north , to the mountainous, sometimes rural areas of the Catskills. The exodus has been traced back to the 1920s, but city dwellers have been coming here since long before that. It's an area of undulating terrain punctuated by rambling rivers and waterfalls, perfect for scenic hikes and drives, and afternoons spent skiing or fishing.

The Catskills are in the midst of another resurgence, making it easy for even frequent visitors to experience a new, undiscovered part of the sprawling wilderness areas. So, pack up your car (or rent one) and drive north, leaving the city squarely in the rearview. The farther west you go, veering away from the Hudson River, the more remote and crowd-free the Catskills become. While the eastern and southern Catskills (Ulster and Sullivan counties) are the easiest to reach, they're also arguably the most popular. Even the northern Catskills (Greene County) was put on the map back in 2016 by Scribner's Catskill Lodge, a property located near Hunter Mountain, originally built in the mid-1960s. So, set your sights instead on the westernmost subregion, the Great Western Catskills (Delaware County).

But, no matter what part of the Catskills you choose, you won't have any trouble finding a quiet mountainside to explore, a collection of antique shops to peruse or a provincial farmstead to visit.

Photo of a Mansion room at The Roxbury at Stratton Falls courtesy of The Roxbury.

Where to stay: Check in to the whimsical Roxbury Motel , which officially welcomed a significant expansion at Stratton Falls this summer. (Book either a room at a reimagined 19th-century estate, the Mansion or stay in one of eight new cottages.) This themed experience isn't for everyone, so for a more traditional Catskills stay, try one of the many inns and lodges in the area.

Getting there: Depending on traffic, the Great Western Catskills region is about three hours northwest of Manhattan. So, be sure to break up the drive with lunch in one of the charming towns along the Hudson River.

15 Top-Rated Weekend Getaways in the Bay Area, CA

Written by Lisa Alexander and Freddy Sherman Updated Jan 3, 2022 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

When you're ready for a break and want to get away from San Francisco for the weekend, you have a seemingly endless array of options. Couples may want a romantic getaway near San Francisco, like The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay with its ocean-view rooms, luxurious spa, and fine dining. Families traveling with children may prefer a resort destination with a wider range of activities, like Lake Tahoe or Yosemite National Park .

You don't have to travel far from San Francisco to feel like you are getting away from it all. Muir Beach in Marin County is only 18 miles from The City (about a 45-minute drive) but gives the impression of a hidden paradise. The landmark Claremont Club & Spa offers a pampering resort experience only 12 miles (a 35-minute drive) from San Francisco.

California's excellent freeway and highway system means many weekend getaways from the Bay Area are no more than a few hours away by car. The historic waterfront town of Monterey and the enchanting seaside village of Carmel are about a three-hour drive down the coast.

Plan an interesting short break, adventurous weekend away, or relaxing escape with our list of the best weekend getaways in the Bay Area.

1. Lake Tahoe

2. stinson beach, 3. muir beach, 4. point reyes, 5. the claremont club & spa, 6. monterey, 7. carmel-by-the-sea, 8. lake berryessa, 9. bodega bay, 10. sausalito, 11. half moon bay, 13. santa cruz, 14. mammoth lakes, 15. yosemite national park.

Lake Tahoe

The country's largest alpine lake covers a part of the border between California and Nevada, about 200 miles from the Bay Area. The drive takes only about four hours without traffic.

During wintertime, Lake Tahoe is a snowy wonderland and a world-class ski destination. Several large-scale ski resorts surround Lake Tahoe, and the ski slopes overlook the dazzling expanse of emerald-blue waters.

In the summer, outdoor activities draw many visitors to Lake Tahoe. Families and adventure seekers alike appreciate the wide range of attractions and things to do , from boating and fishing to hiking and mountain biking. Thousands of miles of hiking trails are found in the Lake Tahoe wilderness.

When the weather is warm, visitors flock to Lake Tahoe's beaches for the stunning mountain scenery and wide array of recreational opportunities. During the summer, the lake's snow-melted waters become more temperate (tolerable for swimming in shallow area), and the ripples glisten in the sunshine.

Kings Beach State Recreation Area offers a superb stretch of sandy beach that is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and boating. The recreation area has excellent amenities, and the nearby town of Kings Beach is brimming with shops, casual eateries, and snack bars. Another favorite lakefront spot is Incline Village , a lively area with an abundance of hotels, boutiques, and restaurants.

Stinson Beach

You can't beat Stinson Beach for an old-fashioned easy Bay Area weekend getaway, especially for families. Tucked away behind rolling hills in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area , Stinson Beach is considered one of the best beaches in California . The fine white-sand shoreline extends for miles. It's a great beach for sunbathing and playing volleyball in the summertime, and swimming is possible when the conditions are safe.

Lifeguards survey the beach from July through Labor Day weekend. Winter and spring seasons draw surfers, who practice the sport at their own risk. Facilities at Stinson Beach include public restrooms, showers, a snack bar, and picnic areas with BBQ grills.

The old-school town of Stinson Beach offers an eclectic mix of locally owned shops, cafés, and a small grocery store where tourists can pick up provisions for a day at the beach.

Although Stinson Beach is only 35 minutes from downtown San Francisco, it is refreshingly devoid of modern development. The town just has a few vintage hotels and boutique lodgings.

Travelers should be aware that the drive to Stinson Beach is a difficult winding portion of Highway One, with many hairpin turns, although many people love the coastal views along the way. During summertime, the road sometimes gets clogged with traffic, and the journey takes twice as long.

Another consideration: The parking lot at Stinson Beach often fills up on warm days, especially on weekends during summertime. It's best to arrive well before noon to get a parking spot.

Stinson Beach is located near two other top tourist attractions of Marin County: Mount Tamalpais State Park and the federally protected Muir Woods National Monument , a primeval forest of old-growth redwood trees.

Muir Beach

Muir Beach is just 17 miles north of San Francisco but feels like a little hidden paradise far away from everything. Lush forested hillsides and shrub-covered bluffs shelter the small sandy beach, hidden in a sheltered cove.

The area surrounding the beach is protected as a nature preserve (part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area ) and includes a network of hiking trails with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.

Redwood Creek and its tidal lagoon, which flows into Muir Beach, provide habitat for endangered Coho salmon and California red-legged frogs. A recent restoration project has improved the habitat and allowed the native species to thrive. To access the beach, visitors cross a pedestrian bridge that traverses Redwood Creek.

Those who appreciate a quiet setting will prefer Muir Beach to Stinson Beach. The picturesque environment is the focus at this beach, and facilities are limited to public restrooms, a small parking lot, and a few picnic tables near the parking lot. Several fire rings are available on the beach for creating beach bonfires. There are no lifeguards at Muir Beach.

Visitors should arrive early on summer weekends. The parking lot can fill up by around noon during high season, especially when the weather is warm. For picnics at the beach, a good place to pick up provisions on the way is at Good Earth Natural Foods .

For a romantic getaway, the Pelican Inn at Muir Beach is the perfect spot. The hotel offers old-world charm in an idyllic setting. The half-timbered whitewashed building, with its slate roof and leaded windows, channels a 16th-century English country inn. The hotel has cozy guest rooms that feature period decor and a restaurant that serves authentic English pub fare prepared from local ingredients.

Nestled in a coastal valley within walking distance of the Pelican Inn, the Green Gulch Farm is a haven of tranquility. This organic farm and garden is home to the San Francisco Zen Center . Visitors may attend meditation sessions, classes, Dharma talks, and other public events at the center.

Muir Beach is closer to San Francisco than Stinson Beach but is on the same Highway One oceanfront route; however, the drive is not quite as arduous. Muir Beach is just three miles away from the Muir Woods National Monument .

Alamere Falls in Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes, less than an hour from San Francisco, is another unspoiled Bay Area getaway destination. The entire area is officially known as the Point Reyes National Seashore , a national park that includes the Point Reyes Lighthouse , which dates to 1870.

The Point Reyes Lighthouse is reached via a staircase of over 300 steps. Safety fencing surrounds the steps because they are built alongside an ocean bluff with sheer sides. Visitors can enter the lighthouse to see the historic Fresnel lens and clockwork mechanism.

A highlight of the Point Reyes National Seashore is Point Reyes Beach, also called Great Beach . This 11-mile expanse of pristine coastline is completely free of development.

The national seashore (like a national park) is also home to Drakes Beach , located near the lighthouse. This beach is America's version of England's White Cliffs of Dover with dramatic, sheer, white limestone cliffs towering hundreds of feet above the rough Pacific below.

The Claremont Club & Spa

This historic landmark hotel crowns the Oakland hills in the city of Berkeley, just 12 miles away across the Bay Bridge from downtown San Francisco. The Claremont Club & Spa, A Fairmont Hotel has delighted guests ever since it opened in 1915. Aside from being a luxury resort hotel, the Claremont is also a fitness and country club that offers private memberships.

The 22-acre four-star property offers an abundance of recreational opportunities: swimming in one of the three saline pools, playing tennis on one of the 10 courts, and hiking in the Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve.

Many locals visit the Claremont to get a pampering spa treatment at the hotel's renowned spa, without staying overnight. Spa services include massages, facials, bath therapy, and hydrotherapy wellness experiences.

There are several dining options at the Claremont, including Limewood , a gourmet restaurant with superb Bay views; East Bay Provisions , a casual café that serves breakfast pastries, brunch, deli sandwiches, and salads; and Weekend Brunch that offers brunch and poolside meals on the weekends.

Old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey

The small seaside town, formerly known for its fishing and fish packing industries, has evolved from the gritty John Steinbeck vision into a fun weekend getaway destination. Monterey is now filled with tourist attractions , and those former fish canneries are now trendy boutiques, art galleries, tourist shops, and restaurants.

It takes about 2.5 hours to drive down from San Francisco, via the very scenic Highway 1 coastal highway. Continuing farther past Monterey toward Carmel-by-the-Sea, travelers can drive along the epic 17-Mile Drive , which hugs the ocean bluffs overlooking Pebble Beach and other scenic spots like Spanish Bay .

Most tourists congregate in the area around Cannery Row and near the Monterey Bay Aquarium , a must-see attraction that showcases the incredibly rich biodiversity of the bay.

For beachfront accommodations, you have to drive around Monterey Bay to Monterey State Beach . The three-star Monterey Tides hotel is steps away from the beach and has wonderful views of Monterey Bay. This chic beachfront hotel appeals to both couples and families.

Carmel Mission

The next city down the coast from Monterey, Carmel is a quaint seaside village known for its top-notch resort amenities: locally owned boutiques, art galleries, luxurious hotels, cute cafés, candy shops, bakeries, and fine-dining restaurants. Shopping is one of the top things to do in Carmel . It's fun to browse the one-of-a-kind shops and discover artisan-made products.

Development is heavily controlled in downtown Carmel. The flower-bedecked and tree-shaded streets are lined with an ensemble of traditional Spanish-style buildings and enchanting storybook cottages that date to the 1920s. The village also has no traffic lights, no parking meters, and no individual address numbers on buildings (each building has a name instead).

The city is officially called Carmel-by-the-Sea and has long been a haven for artists of all types. The city bills itself as being extremely dog-friendly, and canine companions are welcome in most of the city's businesses. Dogs are also welcome, off-leash, at Carmel Beach .

Carmel's sublime sandy beach and stunning sunsets make it the perfect destination for romantic couples' getaways.

Lake Berryessa

This man-made lake was created in the 1960s with the construction of a large dam that now provides hydroelectric power to several Bay Area cities. The lake, the largest in Napa County, is where San Franciscans come to relax and to play on the water.

Lake Berryessa is very popular with boaters, as well as swimmers and water skiers. The lake is stocked with a wide variety of fish and is a popular getaway destination for anglers .

Surrounding the lake is a vast, 6,000-acre nature reserve, which has hiking trails and other places to explore. The lake is north of San Francisco and it takes about two hours to drive here.

A foggy morning in Bodega Bay

About 90 minutes north of San Francisco in Sonoma County, Bodega Bay is another Bay Area getaway that delights visitors with its wild, rugged stretch of coastline. The large protected bay shelters a sprawling shoreline of fine golden-sand beaches and is a popular spot for kayaking.

The community incorporates a fishing harbor and the quaint village of Bodega Bay. The town caters to tourists with a wide range of accommodations, including upscale hotels like the Inn at the Tides and the Bodega Bay Lodge. There are also affordable options such as the Bodega Coast Inn & Suites.

Movie fans will recognize the town of Bodega Bay from its appearance as the location for the iconic Alfred Hitchcock film The Birds .

The area's history is fascinating. It was occupied by the Russians in the early 19 th century before becoming part of Spanish California and later the United States.

Sausalito

This picture-perfect seaside community nestles along a quiet bay in Marin County, on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. It's just a short ferry ride away from San Francisco.

Wooded hillsides enclose the town, and an array of beautiful mansions perch above the bay. Sunny yacht marinas give Sausalito the feel of a Mediterranean coastal resort town and are often captured by local artists in paintings. Tucked away at the waterfront are colorful little houseboats, relics of the town's free-spirited days in the Bohemian 1960s.

Sausalito has an inviting downtown filled with art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. The most bustling area of the town is found right next to the ferry terminal and continuing from there along Bridgeway , the town's main street, which runs alongside a scenic waterfront path .

Several gourmet restaurants on Bridgeway (or just off this street) feature fabulous bay views, including The Spinnaker and the upscale Italian restaurant Scoma's of Sausalito .

The coastal landscape of the Marin Headlands provides a splendid backdrop for the town of Sausalito. Some of the views of the Golden Gate Bridge, bay, and city from the elevated locations in Sausalito are truly amazing (and very Instagram-worthy).

Half Moon Bay

In a secluded coastal setting, The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay is the perfect Bay Area romantic getaway for couples. This five-star hotel is the only seaside luxury resort in Northern California, and most of the rooms and suites have spectacular ocean views. The resort sits atop a cliff, with a pristine sandy beach only a short walk away.

Amenities at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay include a championship golf course, an enormous spa, tennis courts, and fitness center. The hotel also has three excellent restaurants with amazing ocean views.

The charming small country town and its surrounding nature sites offer plenty of tourist appeal. Half Moon Bay is a popular weekend destination for couples, as well as for families with kids, and outdoorsy types. Visitors can take walks along the beach, check out the local farms, and go hiking in the nearby redwood forests.

Sonoma Plaza

Sonoma County, about an hour's drive from San Francisco, is like a cheaper, more authentic Napa Valley. It's filled with vine-covered fields, and there are many curbside farm stands where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Dairies and other local producers also have roadside shops where you can buy and try fresh cheese, meats, and other foods. The area is also populated with a few luxury resorts and spas.

Outdoor activities include hiking, biking (road and mountain), boating, and fishing. A good place to hike is the Jack London State Historic Park , which aside from having miles of hiking trails, has the former home and the grave of celebrated author Jack London.

Sonoma is both a city and a county, and Sonoma Plaza is the city of Sonoma's 19 th -century town center and main street area. Railroad buffs (and kids) will love the Sonoma TrainTown Railroad , a small-gauge steam railroad and train amusement park.

Aerial view of Santa Cruz

Synonymous with summertime fun in the sun, Santa Cruz boasts one of the best beaches in California , only a short drive (90 minutes) from San Francisco. This classic beach town has a superb beach with an expansive shoreline of soft, golden sand. Sunny weather and a sheltered location in a protected bay, with gentle surf, are other advantages of Santa Cruz Beach.

Next to the beach is the iconic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk , an old-school, mile-long wooden boardwalk, lined with shops, carnival games, and next to an amusement park. The Boardwalk opened way back in 1907, and two rides (the Giant Dipper roller coaster and the Looff Carousel) are even National Historic Landmarks.

The ocean in front of the beach is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and from the beach, you can often see dolphins, otters, sea lions, and whales.

Thousand Island Lake and Banner Peak in Mammoth

This natural getaway destination is another year-round outdoor area known mainly for its winter sports. It's a beautiful six-hour drive from San Francisco (or a 45-minute flight). The town is in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and Mammoth Mountain is the local mountain and the name of the ski resort. Yosemite National Park is close-by, and nearby Mono Lake , with it's lunar-like landscape, is also something to see.

The elevation is high, and so is the snowpack, sometimes allowing ski areas to stay open well into the summer months.

A visit to the Mammoth area should also include a stop at the nearby Manzanar National Historic Site . This is one of the 10 concentration camps set up by the US government during World War II for people of Japanese descent.

Sunset over the Yosemite Valley

For the ultimate Bay Area weekend getaway, you can leave San Francisco early in the morning and about four hours later, you'll arrive at Yosemite National Park . It's truly a spectacular place, with incredible natural wonders like the 3,000-foot granite walls of El Capitan or the giant granite Half Dome rock. Also be sure to check out Bridalveil Fall , a 600-foot waterfall.

The park is also home to giant sequoia redwood trees. There's a small village in the park with shops and the park's museum and visitor's center. You can also find places to eat and spend the night.

There's a range of activities available, from hiking and camping , to tours by tram. The guided tram tours are available in a two-, four-, or eight-hour (all-day) itinerary and take you all over the park.

Nestled on the shores of New York’s Seneca Lake, Watkins Glen is one of the friendly towns with magnificent views that can be found amongst the vineyards of the Finger Lakes region , which is home to 10 other gorgeous lakes and over 100 wineries, distilleries, and craft breweries.

“The region is full of scenic natural areas and spectacular sites,” says TravelAwaits writer Robin O’Neal Smith, “ Watkins Glen State Park  is my favorite. It is considered to be the most popular and beautiful of all the Finger Lakes State Parks.” Perhaps that is due to its 19 waterfalls, cliffs, and lush greenery. In the summer months, you can take a scheduled tour. But beware of the 85-foot-high suspension bridge you’ll have to cross at one point as you hike the trail.

Niagara Falls in New York State

8. Niagara Falls, New York

Summer is the most popular time of year to visit Niagara Falls . According to TravelAwaits writer Robbie Woods, “With average daily highs sitting between 75 and 80°F, it’s not hard to see why. Like much of the region, Niagara Falls tends to experience high levels of humidity, but the proximity to water moderates the temperature. Summers here are clement without being too stifling.” He notes that August is the driest month of the year, but also happens to be the zenith of tourist season.

This time of year everything is open, albeit busy. “On the American side,  Niagara Falls State Park  is a must-see,” says Woods, “with its 400 acres of verdant woodland pressed up against the water.” Get an up-close-and-personal look at the falls on the iconic Maid of the Mist boat tour and go behind the falls on a tour of the Cave of the Winds . “Most of these things are best done in the summer,” notes Woods, “so if you don’t mind a crowd — or paying top dollar — this is definitely the season to visit.”

Visit Healdsburg

San Francisco is an amazing city in its own right , but as a local who has lived here for more than 10 years, I also love that world-class vineyards, beautiful beaches, and rugged mountains are a short drive away. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat or a change of scene, consider one of these 11 easy weekend getaways from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Healdsburg, California, is more than wine: Redwood forests and stretches of the Russian River to kayak are also accessible from this small town.

1. Healdsburg and Sonoma wine country

  • Distance: 90 minutes north of San Francisco
  • Best for: a low-key wine and food getaway

It’s hard to see all of Sonoma County’s wine country in a single weekend. Sonoma’s version is larger and more spread out than that of neighboring Napa Valley. Instead, make the northern town of Healdsburg your home base for the weekend. In the past few years, plenty of exciting new hotels, restaurants, and tasting rooms have joined the area, giving the historic town a burst of new energy.

What to do in Healdsburg

Yes, you could spend an entire day tasting wine (it is Sonoma County, after all), but you’ll also want to explore the area’s natural beauty. To do so, join a cycling tour at Russian River Adventures to explore the area on two wheels with a knowledgeable guide, or combine your ride with a kayak adventure on Getaway Adventures ’ pedal-paddle tour.

Healdsburg’s food scene is also a big reason to visit: The city is home to three Michelin-starred restaurants: SingleThread (also awarded a Michelin Green Star ), and the same team’s newly opened vegan café, bar, and restaurant, Little Saint . (Pro move: You can also try their dips while sampling pinot noirs at the beautifully designed downtown tasting room for Marine Layer. ) For a more casual lunch or dinner, grab a pizza on the rooftop at the Matheson , dive into some pasta (and a round of bocce) at Molti Amici , or enjoy cocktails and fried chicken at Lo&Behold . Healdsburg also has an excellent farmers’ market on Saturdays.

Where to stay in Healdsburg

For a luxurious retreat, book one of the tree houses at the Montage Healdsburg , a 258-acre property that officially opened its doors in 2020, making it the first major resort property in the Healdsburg area. Or head to the Madrona , a historic property originally built in 1881 as a private residence that is now a beautiful, maximalist boutique hotel designed by Jay Jeffers.

Prefer an option within walking distance of Healdsburg’s square? Then check into eco-friendly Harmon Guest House, a peaceful yet centrally located hotel only a block from dozens of fantastic restaurants, tasting rooms, and bars. Visiting in the summer? Rest assured: All three options have swimming pools.

2. Mendocino coast

  • Distance: three hours north of San Francisco
  • Best for: a remote drive along Highway 1

The Mendocino coast is no secret weekend getaway spot. While most visitors will focus on exploring the coastal town of Mendocino and its surroundings, there’s much to be discovered along the 90+ miles of Mendocino’s coastline. If it’s your first time in the area, base yourself in the small town of Mendocino. Beaten path or not, its proximity to trails, beaches, restaurants, and small locally run shops make it a must on any California getaway list. Or explore a new stretch of the coast, like the small town of Elk and nearby Salt Point State Park to the south of Mendocino.

What to do on the Mendocino coast

You could easily fill your weekend exploring tide pools on the beach and hiking trails with dramatic ocean views, but part of the Mendocino coast’s charms are the small towns near the highway. Save plenty of time for pit stops from Gualala to Fort Bragg; shop the variety store Matson Mercantile in Elk; enjoy vegetarian cooking and wine at the hip and colorful Fog Eater Cafe after an afternoon of art gallery–hopping in Mendocino; or sample fresh local seafood at Princess Seafood in Fort Bragg.

If you are looking to be more active, rent a kayak from Catch a Canoe and paddle your way around Big River near the town Mendocino.

Where to stay on the Mendocino coast

For a classic Mendocino experience, book a room at JD House , a six-room bed-and-breakfast with ocean views and decor that lands somewhere between ship captain’s home and modern hygge. Or immerse yourself in nature at Mendocino Grove , where you can stay in safari tents complete with beds, rugs, and firepits. In 2023, the Grove added a sauna and espresso bar that make it an extra dreamy glamping experience.

Or head 15 miles south to the small coastal town of Elk, and reserve a room at the Harbor House Inn , a hotel and Michelin-starred restaurant perched on a cliff above a private, pebbled beach.

3. Hope Valley

  • Distance: four hours east of San Francisco
  • Best for: a less-crowded escape to the Sierra Nevadas

A short drive south from Lake Tahoe , Hope Valley has all the beauty of a Sierra Nevada mountain getaway—minus the crowds. It’s an ideal weekend destination to retreat to the woods for a few days of digital detox amid alpine lakes and pine forests.

What to do in Hope Valley

Like much of the Sierras and Tahoe, Hope Valley is an outdoor destination. In warmer months, take your hiking shoes or mountain bike to explore miles of trails in the nearby wilderness, such as the range of trails around scenic Echo Lake or Snowshoe Thompson’s Cave, which is “a short 1.15-mile hike filled with lore,” according to Afar senior travel news editor Michelle Baran .

In the winter, opt for a snow-filled adventure snow-mobiling or snowshoeing on one of the trails at Hope Valley Sno-Park then warm up in the natural hot springs at nearby Grover Hot Springs State Park .

Where to stay in Hope Valley

Desolation Hotel (formerly Wylder), which has rustic but refurbished log cabins, yurts, and budget-friendly campsites, is an ideal home base in Hope Valley.

4. St. Helena

  • Distance: 90 minutes northeast from San Francisco
  • Best for: wine, of course, but also much more

Napa Valley may feel like an obvious choice for a Bay Area getaway (it is undeniably easy), but that doesn’t mean your itinerary has to be predictable. With an exciting array of new restaurants, tasting rooms, and activities in St. Helena, it’s easier than ever to go beyond the most well-known attractions while focusing on an area of Napa most people tend to pass through in favor of nearby Calistoga or Yountville.

What to do in Napa Valley

Take a different approach to winetasting and bike between tasting rooms on the Napa Vine Trail . It’s slated to be fully complete in November 2024, but there’s already a lovely, ready-to-use nine-mile stretch between Calistoga and St. Helena. Or do a tasting at the speakeasy-style Saldo Salon at Prisoner Wine Company .

For food, start with a wellness-minded breakfast at the bright and airy NO|MA House café in the heart of St. Helena. For a casual lunch, go to the Station , a new eatery in a repurposed gas station serving NYC-style pizza. At the end of the day, you’ll find us at Charlie’s , a restaurant by French Laundry alum Elliot Bell with a focus on wood-fired dishes like flatbread, steak, and charcoal-grilled carrots. Not hungry? That’s OK, the happy hour and late-night bar scene here is one of the most fun for miles.

Where to stay in St. Helena

Book one of the 64 spacious guest rooms at Alila Napa Valley, a dreamy resort built around a historic Georgian estate mansion, now home to its on-site, prix fixe Italian restaurant, Violetto. With an outdoor pool and bar, spa, and rooms with private patios and firepits, it’s an ideal space to rest and recoup from a full day of winetasting.

5. Guerneville

  • Distance: one hour, 45 minutes north of San Francisco
  • Best for: summer fun and food by the Russian River

Although lovely year-round, Guerneville’s location alongside the Russian River makes it an especially popular weekend destination in the summer, when you can float, kayak, or canoe. Off the river, this tiny town is also home to a vibrant LGBTQ+ scene.

What to do in Guerneville

In the summer months, pack a floatie and a cooler full of snacks to spend the day lazing around on the Russian River. Visitors can also rent a canoe from Burke’s Canoes . Wander the woods for a walk among the giants in Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve .

Afterwards, this Sonoma County town is an excellent spot for food and wine lovers: biscuits at Piknik Town Market , winetasting at Hartford Family Winery , beers at Stumptown Brewery , mezcal cocktails at El Barrio , and ice cream at Nimble & Finn’s are a few of the area’s highlights. Come dinnertime, you’ll find us at the Lodge , the restaurant at nearby hotel Dawn Ranch.

Where to stay in Guerneville

For classic Guerneville, you can’t go wrong renting a house by the river or booking a romantic retreat at the adults-only Boon Hotel + Spa , an intimate, LGBTQ-friendly boutique hotel with a pool, spa, and breakfast delivered to your room. Prefer to glamp? Head to AutoCamp and stay in a tricked-out Airstream trailer for the weekend.

Or consider one of the newer hotels in the area, including the luxurious, 21-room boutique hotel, Stravrand (opened in 2021) located on a former orchard, and Dawn Ranch (opened in 2022), a collection of stylish cabins among redwoods, complete with restaurant and spa.

6. Bodega Bay

  • Best for: escaping the summer heat, kayaking, and relaxing in a newly renovated lodge

Although Bodega—a tiny blip of a town on California’s Highway 1—is close enough to San Francisco for a day trip, the newly renovated rooms at the Lodge at Bodega Bay are reason enough for locals, out-of-towners, and northbound road-trippers to turn their visit into a full-fledged weekend getaway.

Pro tip: Bodega can be as much 20 degrees cooler than inland areas, making it an ideal summer retreat for anyone who wants respite from high temps.

What to do in Bodega Bay

You might be tempted to spend the entire weekend with a book and a beverage while enjoying the coastal views (and we won’t judge you if do), but the natural beauty of the area might convince you otherwise. Enjoy that beauty with a morning kayak along the coast ( Bodega Bay Surf is a friendly spot for rentals) or hike on the scenic Bodega Head Trail. The area is also an excellent spot for bird-watching, especially along the Birdwalk Coastal Access Trail in Doran Regional Park . Prefer a beach day? Grab your blanket and head to Doran Beach or Campbell Cove.

After a day of adventuring, refuel with calamari at the Tides , fish and chips at Fishetarian Fish Market , or a cocktail and crudo at Drakes Fireside Lounge .

Where to stay

Book a room at the sprawling Lodge at Bodega Bay , a few minutes south of town. Each of the spacious 83 rooms features comfortable beds, plush robes, and westward-facing balconies with unobstructed views of the marsh and ocean. The area can get chilly at night and the lodge offers plenty of ways to warm up: in-room fireplaces, hot tub, sauna, or with a cocktail at its on-site bar and restaurant.

Cove and beach in Big Sur

Big Sur has options for varied needs and budgets, from basic campsites to five-star luxury.

  • Distance: three hours south of San Francisco
  • Best for: a classic California coastal getaway

With its dramatic coastlines, waterfalls plunging into the ocean, and expansive, rugged redwood forests, Big Sur is one of those quintessential California destinations. It is also an easy weekend getaway destination from the Bay Area.

What to do in Big Sur

“Nature is one of the region’s biggest draws, but there’s plenty of exploration to do beyond the trees,” says Afar senior editor Aislyn Greene. Places like Tassajara Zen Mountain Center , Hearst Castle , a California condor tour with Ventana Wildlife Society , and a tour of the Point Sur lighthouse , as well as shopping for local art at Hawthorne Gallery or Coast Big Sur are all excellent things to do while in Big Sur.

Where to stay in Big Sur

Accommodation in Big Sur ranges from basic campsites , like those at Pfeiffer State Park, to five-star luxury. Some of our favorite Big Sur hotels include the spectacular, all-inclusive Ventana Big Sur resort, which gives guests the option to choose between staying in one of its luxurious suites or glamping in a safari-style tent, as well as the creative rooms at Post Ranch Inn . Weekend retreat in a tree house , anyone?

Note: portions of Highway 1 are currently closed but slated to open around May 27, 2024.

Carmel Valley (not to be confused with nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea) is less than three hours from San Francisco by car.

Shutterstock

8. Carmel Valley

  • Distance: two hours, 30 minutes from San Francisco
  • Best for: a wine country escape to the south

Napa Valley and Sonoma County aren’t the only places to go for a weekend of winetasting and sunshine (though you’ll rarely see us turn down a trip to either). South of San Francisco, Carmel Valley (not to be confused with nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea) is an equally fantastic—but often overlooked—destination for wine and food adventures.

What to do in Carmel Valley

Plan your weekend around wine tasting at the area’s vineyards, like western-style Cowgirl Winery or Joyce , which specializes in wine from sustainability-minded vineyards. Then decompress with an afternoon of hot and cool outdoor pools and a massage at Refuge Spa or a stroll through the shops at Carmel Valley Village.

Where to stay in Carmel Valley

Relax with a room at family-friendly Carmel Valley Ranch . Or for a more Tuscan-esque experience, stay at Bernardus Lodge & Spa , a wine country escape with rooms that overlook its 28-acre vineyard.

9. Tomales Bay

  • Best for: oysters, cheese, and kayaking in the sea

If a weekend of eating fresh seafood, sampling locally made cheese, and kayaking in a tranquil bay sounds like your kind of getaway, then head to Tomales Bay. This area, just north of the Point Reyes National Seashore, refers to the 15-mile inlet separating Point Reyes Peninsula from mainland Marin County. It also happens to be home to many dairy and oyster farms, as well as scenic parks and natural vistas.

What to do in Tomales Bay

Start your weekend in Tomales Bay with an outdoor activity or two, like watching elk in the Tule Elk Preserve , hiking to the Point Reyes Lighthouse, or kayaking in Tomales Bay. ( Blue Waters Kayaking in Marshall is a great place to rent from.)

After you’ve worked up an appetite, eat your way through the area’s specialties, oysters and cheese, with a stop at Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company just north of Point Reyes Station, oysters at Hog Island or Tony’s Seafood in Marshall, and a locavore dinner at Saltwater Oyster Depot in Inverness. Locals know: For oysters to-go, no-frills Tomales Bay Oyster Co. is the best in the bay.

Where to stay in Tomales Bay

Book a room at the Lodge at Marconi , which opened in fall 2023 on the grounds of the history-rich Marconi Conference Center State Park. The attractive interiors, which blend retro elements with a modern, maximalist style, are sure to draw you in, but it’s the property’s 62 acres of meadows, wildflowers, bay views, and eucalyptus groves that will make you want to never leave. At night, get a s’mores kit and head to the property’s communal firepit or (starting June 2024) its on-site restaurant and bar for a nightcap.

Why Cambria Is Central California’s Most Relaxing Weekend Break

Cambria’s beach will blow away the cobwebs.

10. Cambria

  • Distance: four hours south of San Francisco
  • Best for: whale watching, wine, and relaxing on the beach

Equidistant from San Francisco and Los Angeles, the coastal town of Cambria is further than most of the other weekend getaways on this list, but it offers a relaxing break for those who brave the extra miles. Known as where the pines meet the sea, this low-key town is full of opportunities to get outside and hike, explore tide pools, or hang out on the beach—then fill up on delicious seafood and wine while watching the sunset.

What to do in Cambria

Lean into Cambria’s laid-back charm and while away your day with walks along Moonstone Beach or hike the bluffs at Fiscalini Ranch . Come sundown, enjoy a glass of wine and bite to eat at one of several locally owned eateries, such as seaside Sea Chest Oyster Bar or Madeline’s , which sits along the just-lively-enough Main Street. If you’re feeling adventurous, explore nearby sights like the tiny town of San Simeon and Big Sur to the north, Morro Bay State Park for hikes or beach hangs to the south, or Paso Robles wine country to the east.

Where to stay in Cambria

At the north end of Moonstone Beach, family-friendly Oceanpoint Ranch has comfortable rooms (many of which have wood-burning fireplaces), plenty of activities (shuffleboard, croquet, horseshoes), and an on-site restaurant that serves to-go breakfasts and hearty suppers. For a more woodsy experience, Cambria Pines Lodge is a cozy, forest retreat complete with a lounge perfect for enjoying a glass of local pinot by a warm fire.

11. Santa Cruz Mountains

  • Distance: one hour south of San Francisco
  • Best for: wine, hikes, and mountain bikes

Bay Area residents often come to the Santa Cruz Mountains for day trips and brief weekend adventures. But if you plan to stay longer, you won’t be bored. There’s enough winery hopping and hiking among the redwoods to fill an entire weekend.

What to do in the Santa Cruz Mountains

Outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, road cycling, and rock climbing are the main draw for visitors to the Santa Cruz Mountains. After you’ve worked up an appetite on the trails, visit one of the area’s wineries, like award-winning, family-run Mindego Ridge , or the many ranches and farms—an afternoon picnic and visit with the goats at Harley Farms Goat Dairy is a local favorite—to relax and refuel.

Where to stay in the Santa Cruz Mountains

Book yourself into a luxurious tree house at Canyon Ranch’s Woodside Retreat , which includes a full schedule of activities, like hikes and yoga sessions, and three healthy, locally sourced meals each day.

People Pay to Get Lost on Vacation

Sermon illustrations.

Home > Sermon Illustrations

%%item.contenttype%%

Admit it. We’ve all dreamed of escaping our daily routine and walking off into the wilderness to explore the great unknown. The truth is, we all need a bit of time by ourselves every once in a while, and that’s exactly what luxury travel agency Black Tomato are offering.

Their “Get Lost” service is the ultimate trip for anyone looking to get away from it all—especially if your idea of fun is being deposited in the middle of nowhere with only a backpack, a GPS tracker, and a toothbrush. Travelers are then tasked with the daunting job of navigating their way back towards civilization—a challenging but ultimately rewarding experience for those hoping to embrace their inner nomad.

Black Tomato introduced the concept—a kind of a blind date for vacations with “Survivor” elements—in 2017. Cofounder Tom Marchan, who came up with the idea of getting clients “lost,” thought of it as he considered ways to help people truly relax in an age of digital distractions. He said: “Could we create an experience that requires total mental and physical focus? By being totally distracted, it’s almost impossible for them to think about the day-to-day, everything at home.”

With Black Tomato’s guidance, travelers can choose how lost they want to feel, and how surprised they want to be by their destination. In most cases, travelers don’t know where they’re going until they receive flight information; if they fly private, they might step off a plane with no clue where they are.

For Esther Spengler the only requirements she had were going somewhere warm and far away from the United States. Spengler saved up for the 10-day trip to Morocco, which she said cost roughly $13,000. Her adventure began when she flew to Marrakesh and continued by car into the mountains. After a couple of days of training—learning navigation, fire-starting, and how to put up her own shelter—Spengler was on her own for three days.

Despite bloodied toenails and a tricky time setting up her tarp shelter, Spengler was thrilled with the experience. “It turned out really, really incredible and so much more than I could imagine,” she said.

Possible Preaching Angles:

1) Experiencing God; Trusting God – God often calls us to step out of our comfort zone into unknown territory and trust in him alone — Abraham was called to a place he did not know (Heb. 11:8); Peter was called to step out of the boat and walk on water (Matt. 14:28). 2) Solitude; Seeking God – We also need times of solitude and withdrawal from life’s busyness to focus on God alone (1 Kings 19:12; Psa. 27:8).

6 takeaways from Stormy Daniels’ testimony on what happened between her and Trump

NEW YORK (AP) — Adult film actor Stormy Daniels took the witness stand Tuesday in the historic hush money case against former president Donald Trump, who looked on as she detailed their alleged sexual encounter and the payment she got to keep it quiet.

Prosecutors allege Trump paid Daniels to keep quiet about the allegations as he ran for president in 2016. Her testimony Tuesday aired them very publicly as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee seeks to win the White House again.

LIVE UPDATES: Adult film star testifies in Trump hush money trial

Trump denies having sex with Daniels, and his lawyers unsuccessfully pushed for a mistrial midway through her testimony.

It’s the biggest spectacle yet in the first criminal trial of a former American president, now in its third week of testimony in Manhattan.

Here are some takeaways from Daniels’ testimony so far.

Who is Stormy Daniels?

Daniels is at the center of the case because she was paid $130,000 in the final weeks of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign to keep quiet about what she says was an awkward and unexpected sexual encounter with Trump a decade before. He says the encounter never happened.

Prosecutors say Trump paid Daniels as part of a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 campaign by burying negative stories about him. His lawyers have sought to show that Trump was trying to protect his reputation and family — not his campaign — by shielding them from embarrassing stories about his personal life.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, said she grew up poor in Louisiana, took ballet and wanted to be a veterinarian. She started exotic dancing in high school and appearing in adult films at age 23, eventually moving to direct more than 150 films and winning a roster of porn industry awards.

Meeting Trump

Daniels testified she first met and chatted with Trump at a 2006 Lake Tahoe celebrity golf outing where her studio was a sponsor.

He referred to her as “the smart one” and asked her if she wanted to go to dinner. Daniels testified that she accepted Trump’s invitation because she wanted to avoid dinner with her co-workers and thought it might help her career. Trump had his bodyguard get her number, she said.

When they met up later in his penthouse, she appreciated that he seemed interested in the business aspects of the industry rather than the “sexy stuff.” He also suggested putting her on his TV show, “The Apprentice,” a possibility she hoped could help establish her as a writer and director.

She left to use the bathroom and was startled to find Trump in his underwear when she returned, she said. She didn’t feel physically or verbally threatened but realized that he was “bigger and blocking the way,” she testified.

“The next thing I know was: I was on the bed,” and they were having sex, Daniels recalled. The encounter was brief but left her “shaking,” she said. “I just wanted to leave,” she testified.

Payments for silence

Daniels was asked if Trump ever told her to keep things between them confidential and said, “Absolutely not.” She said she learned in 2011 that a magazine had learned the story of their encounter and she agreed to do an interview for $15,000 to make money and “control the narrative.” The story never ran.

In 2016, when Trump was running for president, Daniels said she authorized her manager to shop the story around but did not initially receive interest from news outlets. She said that changed in October with the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump bragged about grabbing women sexually without asking permission. She said she learned that Trump’s then-lawyer and personal fixer, Michael Cohen, wanted to buy her silence.

Trump in court

Trump showed signs of what appeared to be discomfort as he heard testimony about his alleged extramarital sexual encounter.

He started the day by posting a comment — and later deleting it — on his social media network complaining that he’d “just recently been told who the witness is today” and falsely said his lawyers had no time to prepare. He’s under a gag order that prevents him from commenting publicly on witnesses, jurors and some others connected to the case.

Trump whispered frequently to his attorney during Daniels’ testimony, and his expression seemed to be pained at one point as she recounted details about the dinner she says they shared.

He shook his head and appeared to say something under his breath as Daniels testified that Trump told her he didn’t sleep in the same room as his wife.

Mistrial push

Midway through her testimony, Trump’s lawyers moved for a mistrial.

Defense lawyer Todd Blanche argued that Daniels’ testimony about the alleged encounter and other meetings with him had “nothing to do with this case,” and would unfairly prejudice the jury.

The judge rejected it, and he faulted defense attorneys for not raising more of their objections while she was testifying.

Before Daniels took the stand, Trump’s lawyers had tried to stop her from testifying about the encounter’s details, saying it was irrelevant in “a case about books and records.”

Prosecutors countered Daniels’ testimony gets at what Trump was trying to hide and they were “very mindful” not to draw too much graphic detail. Before Daniels took the stand, they told the judge the testimony would be “really basic,” and would not “involve any details of genitalia.”

While the judge didn’t side with Trump’s lawyers, he acknowledged that some details were excessive. The objections could potentially be used by Trump’s lawyers if he is convicted and they file an appeal.

A jarring split screen

Trump’s appearance in court Tuesday, like all other days he’s stuck in the courtroom, means he can’t be out on the campaign trail as he runs for president a third time. It’s a frequent source of his complaints, but Daniels’ testimony in particular might underscore how much of a distraction the trial is from the business of running for president.

While Trump was stuck in a Manhattan courthouse away from voters and unable to speak for much of the day, his rival, Democratic President Joe Biden, was attending a Holocaust remembrance ceremony and condemning antisemitism.

It’s an issue Trump has sought to use against Biden in the campaign by seizing on the protests at college campuses over the Israel-Hamas war.

Whitehurst reported from Washington. Associated Press writers Michael Sisak, Jennifer Peltz, Jake Offenhartz and Alanna Durkin Richer contributed to this story.

3 surfers from Australia and the U.S. were killed in Mexico's Baja California. Here's what we know.

Updated on: May 7, 2024 / 4:08 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Two Australians and an American were doing what they loved on the stunning, largely isolated stretch of Baja California's Pacific coast. Their last images on social media showed them sitting and gazing at the waves.

What happened to end their lives may have been as random as a passing pickup truck full of people with ill intent. The  surfers were shot in the head , their bodies dumped in a covered well miles away. Here's what we know:

Who were the victims?

Brothers Jake and Callum Robinson from Australia and American Jack Carter Rhoad had apparently stopped to surf the breaks between Punta San José, about 50 miles south of Ensenada, and La Bocana, further north on the coast.

Callum Robinson's Instagram page showed several images from the trio's Mexico trip: enjoying beers with their feet up in a bar, lazing in a jacuzzi, eating roadside tacos, looking out at the surf.

Mexico Missing Foreigners

Callum, who was six-foot-four, had played in the U.S. Premier Lacrosse League, which left a  message on its website  saying the lacrosse world was "heartbroken by the tragic loss" of the trio.

"We offer our hearts, support and prayers to the Robinson and Rhoad Families, as well as all who loved Callum, Jake and Jack," it said.

On social media, his devastated girlfriend shared a black and white photo of the couple kissing, with the message: "You are one of one. I will love you forever."

In another photo she shared, in which the two can be seen embracing,  she wrote: "My heart is shattered into a million pieces. I don't have the words right now."

Jake Robinson was a doctor in Perth, according to Australian media.

Rhoad was engaged and set to marry Natalie Weirtz on Aug. 17 in Columbus, Ohio, according to a  Zola  online wedding registry. A GoFundMe which was launched to "rally support for Natalie" had raised over $57,000 as of Tuesday morning.

"In the wake of the heartbreaking loss of Carter Rhoad, Callum Robinson, and Jake Robinson, our hearts ache with grief for their families, friends, and community," reads a separate GoFundMe set up for Rhoad's family.

What happened to them?

The three friends were attacked there on April 28 or 29.

As soon as police arrived at their last known camp site, it was clear that something had gone violently wrong.

There were bloodstains and marks "as if heavy objects had been dragged," leading to suspicions of an attack, the Baja California state prosecutor's office said in an attempt to reconstruct the scene.

Chief state prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez described what likely would have been moments of terror that ended the trip for the three men.

She theorized the killers drove by and saw the foreigners' pickup truck and tents and wanted to steal the truck's tires and other parts. But "when (the foreigners) came up and caught them, surely, they resisted."

FILE PHOTO: Members of a rescue team work at a site where three bodies were found, in La Bocana

She said that's when the killers would have shot the men. She said they were likely not attacked because they were tourists. "The evidence suggests they (the killers) did not know where they were from."

Andrade Ramírez said the reconstruction of events was based on the forensic examiner's reports, noting all three had bullet wounds to the head.

There was a hurried attempt to destroy evidence. The foreigners' tents were apparently burned. The pickup truck was driven miles away and burned. The assailants' truck was later found with a gun inside.

Then, at "a site that is extremely hard to get to," the bodies were dumped into a well about 4 miles (6 kilometers) away. Investigators were surprised when, underneath the bodies of the three foreigners, a fourth body was found that had been there much longer.

"They had to have previous knowledge of it," Andrade Ramírez said of the attackers, acknowledging the possibility they were behind the previous killing.

The well had been covered with boards. "It was literally almost impossible to find it," Andrade Ramírez said. It took two hours to winch the bodies out.

Who are the suspects?

Prosecutors have said they were questioning three people in the killings. Two were caught with methamphetamines. One of them, a woman, had one of the victims' cellphones when she was caught. Prosecutors said the two were being held pending drug charges but continue to be suspects in the killings.

A third man was arrested on charges of a crime equivalent to kidnapping, but that was before the bodies were found. It was unclear if he might face more charges.

The third man was believed to have directly participated in the killings. In keeping with Mexican law, prosecutors identified him by his first name, Jesús Gerardo, alias "el Kekas," a slang word that means quesadillas, or cheese tortillas.

Andrade Ramírez said he had a criminal record that included drug dealing, vehicle theft and domestic violence, adding, "We are certain that more people were involved."

She emphasized that she could not discuss anything related to the suspects, or their possible statements, because that was not allowed under Mexican law and might prejudice the case against them.

MEXICO-US-AUSTRALIA-MISSING-SURFERS-INVESTIGATION

Andrade Ramírez noted that the victims' families said the brothers and Rhoad had come many times to the seaside spot and never had any problem. This time, however, "there was no way to ask for help when the attackers showed up."

What's next?

In a statement to CBS News, the FBI said it "continues to work with our international law enforcement partners in resolving this ongoing situation" and has been in contact with the family of the American victim.

"While we cannot comment on specifics to preserve the sanctity of the investigative and legal processes, along with protecting the privacy of those impacted, we can assure you that we are assessing every tip. If credible, we will pursue those leads with rigor," the FBI said.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Tuesday he had requested an opportunity to speak to the brothers' parents Deborah and Martin Robinson.

"This is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to them. To identify these wonderful young men and they have been travelling in Mexico. We've been dealing with them through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. I've indicated that I wish to speak to them at an appropriate time of their choosing," Albanese told reporters in the Queensland state town of Rockhampton.

AFP contributed to this report.
