• Delhi – Goa – Delhi Road Trip : A quick guide

Our love for road trips pushed us to take another . After two Ladakh trips from Delhi and One trip from Delhi to Bhuj (Rann of Kutch)we wanted to explore the much talked about National Highway 1 .(Delhi-Udaipur-Vadodra-Panvel-Goa). So, we planned a trip to Goa. With a family of four, two boys (14yrs and 10yrs old)and my wife we started our journey on 1st January 2016 and concluded it on 15th January 2016. Besides basic planning like the distance we planned to cover in a day or the destination we wanted to reach on a particular day, only other preparation we needed was getting our old work horse (2011 model XUV 500 W-8) ready for the trip, which included a visit to Mahindra Service centre. Surprisingly, they assured us no routine service was needed as the vehicle has not covered the required KMs. They handed over the vehicle after basic check ups.

Day 1(1st january2016): Delhi – Himmat Nagar (Gujrat) 5.45a.m. Started our journey from I. P. Extension, Delhi with a target to reach Udaipur. We reached Udaipur by 3.30 pm, So, decided to move further before calling it a day. We reached Himmat nagar in Gujarat, covering a distance of over 850 km on day one. We spent the night in Hotel Milestone, on the main highway with a plan to start early next day as the kids were eager to reach goa as soon as possible . The route covered on Day one included I. P. Extension -Gurgaon-Manesar-Jaipur Ajmerbypass-Udaipur-Himmatnagar.

Day2(2nd january2016): Himmat Nagar (Guj) – Panvel – Mane gaon (Maharashtra) 6.00a.m.started our journey with an intention to cross Panvel and get as close to Goa as possible. And here comes the highways, very nice and well maintained ,felt very proud . We reached Thane around 5.00pm & then started the great confusion, the roads got messed up and we lost good two hours in getting the right route. Our GPS too got confused.

Finally we crossed Panvel and moved on to unknown towns and villages .Now we were desperate to find a decent hotel, but the places we crossed had a dark haunting look, as the local people had called it a day. Although, there were hotels but we were not sure about them. Then we asked a few shopkeepers to suggest a hotel. We were assured that we can check into any hotel we come across on the way. They are all safe but the services would be very basic. It was around 9.pm by now, tired & desperate, we decided that we will enter the first hotel that comes on the way ….Finally in Mane gaon (Maharashtra) we stayed in basic hotel( Hotel Open Umbrella, a family owned hotel cum open air restaurant).This day we covered around 750km. Places covered included Ahmadabad By pass- Vadodara by pass- Panvel – Thane – Panvel – Manegaon.

Day3(3rd January2016): And to Goa 10.a.m.started again, after a hearty breakfast, to reach Goa (400km) .On the way the scenic beauty of Maharashtra mesmerised us. Green feilds lined with coconut trees and the western Ghats, all made the journey worthy…These are the things that make the road trip special .Around 5.00 pm we entered the borders of Goa , by 7.00p.m.we checked into a resort (Primo Bom) at Baga beach ( We had been to this resort during our last visit to Goa in 2012). Distance covered during the day was about 400 km.

Day4-8(4th January to 8th ) : Goa Goa and Goa We stayed in Goa for 5 days visiting spice garden, Palolem beach, Dhudh sagar falls, Aguda fort etc. enjoying in the spirits of Goa.

Day 9(9th January): Goa – Pune We started the return journey. Our plan was to take a different route, visiting Pune, Mumbai & Shirdi . We took a route to Pune via Savantwari, Pune- Bangaluru highway, once again a beautiful, Sceanic road & reached Pune by evening (approx. 450 km). We had our dinner at one of our friends place & spent the night at Hotel Cocoon, in Magarpatta. I was visiting Pune after 25 years ( I did my Engineering from D.Y.Patil College, Pimpri, in 1990).Pune had gone through a virtual make over in all these years, I was not able to locate the roads, which we had used in those days. A lot of grrenery has been lost & the place had expanded a lot, with so many flyovers, new roads & townships. About present day Pune, one can easily name it the city Of traffic Lights (After every 2 minutes one can see a signal..)

Day 10(10january): Pune – Mumbai After visiting my college (& spending some nostalgic moments), we headed towards Mumbai, around 12.30 pm. The Mumbai- Pune highway (Which has been converted to an excellent Expressway) also had changed significantly & we reached outskirts of Mumbai in no time. Even Mumbai has expanded, but improved a lot since my college days. The roads & Traffic were much better. We crossed Navi Mumbai although we saw many good hotels (which I believe was a mistake) & finally had to spend the night in a hotel near Airport (Hotel peninsula Grand- quite a expensive hotel).

Day11-12(11-12th January): Mumbai – Shirdi Visited Gateway of India and drove through Sea link(Worli-bandra). Around 2.30 p.m. we started our journey to Shirdi via Thane & Nasik By-pass. Once again a beautiful scenic road. Visited a vineyard with loads of grapes, also on the route, took few short breaks for photography and tea & reached Shirdi at 7.30p.m.Stay was at Hotel Gsquare just opposite the Shrine Gate. We stayed for another day to recapture our stamina and relax. The distance between Mumbai & Shirdi is about 250 km.

Day13(13th January): Shirdi – Indore – Shajapur From here we planned to take our return journey via M.P.(indore).We started around 10.a.m. and took state highway 3, a single lane highway with quite a lot of traffic, progress was very slow & frustating. We regretted the decision but could not back out as we covered a substantial distance.(Shirdi-Dhule-Indore-Dewas-Shajapur).We started to look for hotels around 7pm, but were not able to locate a decent place (this stretch has mostly small townships with little options for good hotels) .Finally at shajapur we got a room in PWD rest house, clean enough to spend a night, very thankful to the man to allow us to stay. The distance covered during the day was 525 km.

Day14(14th January): Shahapur – Gwalior Started for Gwalior around 8.30a.m.(shajapur-Guna-Shivpuri-Gwalior, a distance of about 400km. We reached Gwalior at 6.p.m.and stayed at (Hotel Tansen). We did some sightseeing in the evening & next day. The most exciting part was the Light & Sound show in Gwalior fort- only four of us were inside the fort, on a cold, foggy & dark evening, for the show.

Day15(15th January): Gwalior-Murena-Agra-Mathura-Yamuna expressway-Noida-Delhi Last day of the trip .We started the last stretch to Delhi reaching home by 10.30 pm.

5000km of sheer pleasure of driving and seeing India through its highways was a unique experience for us. Vast expanses of Gujarat and lush green fields of Maharashtra, dry lands of Madhya Pradesh .

Hi, nice write up. I have done this trip myself in 2010 with my wife and son. In fact in 2009 while coming back from Goa by air, when I looked down I felt that the terrain down there is beautiful and we must do this trip by road some day. Another thing that I wanted to do was go through old Mumbai-Goa road which you also did. Nowadays not many people like to take that route and that I think is a blessing in disguise. The road is not very good but the traffic is also thin. While coming back we also had to go to Pune but missed the Sawantwari turn. But I knew that the roads are running almost parallel to each other, so we could take a right turn from any of the turns. We took a turn almost 25-30 kilometres from there and joined the Bangalore-Pune highway at Kolhapur. But after Mumbai we took the same route back to Delhi while going there so it was not a big issue.

You started by telling that you have done two trip to Ladakh, even I have done two trips. We went though Manali and came back through Srinagar. Both of the trips were so amazing that I would like to go there once again.

My wife and I love travelling to places by car and have decided that we will do a trip to South by car in the next couple of years. I know it is going to be one long trip but that’s what we love doing.

It z an interesting account of u & yr family’s trip by car, quite an adventure of a kind , congrats, that I u are back safely.. I share”& can’t resist adding here to your:: On day 13, Indore.. Gwalior drive the earthernware cooking dish(undya) z called (undhiyu/a)famous gujarati dish if I Am not mistaken, can also b cooked in this earthern pot, its synonym – (undha se Undhiyu) front side is on earth/ floor & back is on top -so ‘undha,’the vegetable mix is mix of very special vegies, lots top-round with its mitti dhakkan (often)allsides r actually,seams r sealed wit dough, once cooking process starts & this pot is either pushed down in digged Matti on burning charcoal or cooked on charcoal sighri with fire reaching all round of this pot in which Undhya is cooked, it z eaten with poories(Indian bread) Shrikhand sweet dish.it &is ready in about 45 minutes /few more minutes.for such a long trip no exercise of staying arrangemnts(tentative)was undertaken! Is quiet different for us. I hv taken/done lots of ssich trips& HV written for good many dailies & journals international & indian.we await a new trip’s diatribe.. frm u & family’s New adventure.. What a debut story Dinesh. Road trips are always a delight. 3 years back we did Kutchh (and I drive the same car as yours) and in 2010, I was lucky enough to do Mumbai-Goa-Mumbai. We took the old road on the way down and then returned via the faster Blr-Mum connection (NH4).

I love roads and made few trips by car recently,delhi to khajurao-sagar and back,then delhi to katra and back plus delhi to lucknow & back.I would like to go Goa by road but my problem is company ,as my wife is not ready to go for such a long trip by car.I went to goa by flight in jan with my wife,son{12 yr}and mother,from then I am starting saving money for this upcoming trip.Tips regarding roads,hotels and route will help me if any one can suggest.

Hi Nimesh…I am Anuradha Dinesh Bakshi’s wife replying this post.it’s heartning that you care about your family members.well long drives are passion oriented activity/hobby.As for us as a couple we love to drive .so we took our kids with us on all the drives even when they were just 1-2 months old….so our kids have adapted to the long drives.My advice for your family and you is this that be comfortable on roads with kids…take multiple stops,have fun,keep cool and calm even when your car is dirty… don’t rush to your destination,be flexible, ultimately you are enjoying this trip with them.we have covered the details of the road and hotels in the article.I wish you and your family take this trip as soon as possible.

I did Delhi – Mumbai in my Honda City 2010. So 2014 should perform better. Keep standard tool kit and extra oil packings to top-up if needed.

Hi, Honda City is a great car. I don’t think it will give you any trouble during the journey. However, it’s always advisable to carry basic tyres replacement kit, which is available in any car. Apart from this, you can carry an air pump, which can be connected to the lighter socket , comes handy in case of emergency. Apart from this, I don’t think much is needed.

Hi! Though not done a road trip of more than 300 kms, yet planning to do Delhi -Goa next month. Am a somewhat cautious driver, average speed will be around 60km/ hour. I have a Maruti Ritz. Honestly is it advisable with this car or one should attempt such long journeys only in an SUV? Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi, although an SUV or bigger car is safer in highway. You can easily make the trip in Ritz. Specially when you are a cautious driver. I have seen people traveling to Leh in a Tata Nano.

I am planning this trip in Dec 2020 with my wife and another couple with a kid aged 3 years. Your blog has some great insights and it has been beautifully documented. The whole planning part is surrounding the number of kilometers to be covered each day keeping the kid’s exhaustion levels in mind. Any suggestions on that?

Hi, Thanks for your positive comments, it’s nice to see you people are getting encouraged from our write-up…..after so many years. My suggestions & comments WRT your excursion- 1. You mentioned, you are two couples, will you be traveling in a single vehicle? The point is, passengers should be as comfortable as possible , the driver by default is always comfortable. 2. About covering a certain km each day, I would say, keep a target for each day but be open to make changes as you travel…once again, the logic of planning to travel such long distance is to enjoy the travel….reaching the destination in a given time frame should not be a limitation. Be prepared to spend a night in any available hotels on the way…don’t worry, it’s not that scary. Check for big/ good/ known townships on the way & plan as you travel, where do you want to call it a day. That will make your journey much simpler & tension free. Just keep a few spare days for your travel, from the total vacation period. Do write….if you want any further encouragement.

By the way, we had travelled to Goa, by road, once again in 2019 & let me tell you about best excursion we had…it was in 2018, planned for the night our elder son appeared for his last 10th papers( if you remember, their maths paper was cancelled because of leakage of question paper & it was supposed to be a retest). We left for Europe…for a 18 days tour, in a self driven car, starting from Rome & covering 5 or 6 countries across Europe….wanted to write about this trip also….will do some day. The best (maybe worst) part is, I had a minor accident on the very first day of my driving in Rome…..but we managed it completed the tour. So please don’t be afraid/ get anxious about what will happen … start with good intentions & everything will end well…..ALL THE BEST. Do let us know, after you come back…I am sure, you will end up one step ahead of us. 4. AS A TEAM LEADER, START LOOKING FOR A NEST(HOTEL) AS THE SUN IS SETTING- this is the best option, while traveling with family . LOOK OUT FOR A DECENT HOTEL IN A DECENT TOWN & SETTLE FOR THE NIGHT. TOMORROW…..START START AFRESH…..IT WILL BE A NEW BEGINNING, START ENJOYING THE JOURNEY OF THIS DAY. THE WHOLE JOURNEY WILL BE BEAUTIFUL & IN THE END YOU GET TO ENJOY THE DESTINATION. FOLLOW THE SAME PRINCIPLE WHILE COMING BACK & ENJOY THE RETURN JOURNEY AS WELL.

Hi Ankit, You can definitely & most comfortably travel on this route in a sedan. Roads, now a days, in India are much …much better than what we had seen in the past. However, If you looking for most comfortable route(Traveling from Delhi or surrounding), I would recommend traveling via Rajasthan (Udaipur), Gujarat( outskirts of Ahmedabad/Vadodra), Maharashtra (outskirts of Mumbai & through Pune). On the return journey, you can travel through MP,…..if you are prepared for some bumps on the way ( The roads are not very good, but you will get a new perspective of India)….don’t worry about your sedan, it will safely bring you home……all the best.

Hi GK Raju Being Diwali week response is bit late. Glad that you and your wife are planning a trip to Trivandrum via Goa..kudos for the dare..This trip is long due in our list .Me & my wife too are planning coast to coast but still in dreams. My suggestions wil be :- *Take few days surplus in hand for the trip .In 2016 when we went to Goa we covered 870 km on Day 1,but in 2019 when we went to Goa through same route we could only cover 660 km on day 1 due to bad traffic and road conditions on jaipur -udaipur highway. So it’s better to take few days in hand for unseen situations. *Carry some eatables and juices along for long drives.we generally pack our lunch( parnthas/ sandwiches) from the hotels where we stay for the night. *Please check for the road conditions on Google/ ask hotel staff before starting off. *Be cool and calm .put on some music for the road. *Last year, January2019 when we went to Goa , jaipur-mumbai stretch was under construction .it was utterly frustrating to drive on that stretch. I am not sure, about the road conditions in this stretch. Please check out for this information. *We avoid late night drive.. around 5p.m. onwards we start looking for accommodation /hotels on Google. Suggested night breaks Day 1 preferably Udaipur/Himmat Nagar depending on the road conditions. Rest of the trip will follow accordingly. If you spend your first night in Udaipur, you will have to take a break at Vadodara/ Ahmedabad, the next night. Next stop should be Pune & then to Goa. Try to cover around 500-600 km per day till Trivandrum.. *Take 1-2 days break to stay at your favourite city on the way to wean of the tiredness. Hi, Have gone through all the stuff above … fascinating. Am very tempted to try it …. I’m 71 and have a one year old Tata Tigor automatic … hardly driven. With wife and one 21 year old son. We have our own place in Goa and normally hire cabs after flying but are excited by the thought of a road trip. Would three days each side be enough? Or it that pushing too much ? Don’t look at my age … I’ve done over 1000 km per day in Thailand ten years ago and still do road trips with my family. But this is long ….

Would you believe, if I say that I flipped the coin to choose from either Goa or Northeast, right before going on a Road Trip from Delhi to Goa. (Laugh out loud)!

Some Quick Facts of this Delhi to Goa Road Trip:

Route: Delhi – Dhaula Kuan – National Highway 48 – Neemrana – Ajmer Bypass – Bhilwara – Chittorgarh – National Highway 27 – Udaipur Bypass – National Highway 48 – Shamlaji – Godhra – Vadodra – Surat – Thane – National Highway 66 – Konkan Region – Mangaon – Chiplun – Goa.

Total Distance: 2022 Kilometers. Car: Tata Nano XT. Average Fuel Economy: 26.2 KMPL.

DAY 1: Delhi to Chittorgarh

I started my journey from Delhi, took the usual route Dhaula Kuan to NH 48 and stopover after 200 KM of drive at Hotel Highway King on NH48 to have a quick bite. I was hungry but there is a serious issue with me, if I will eat a heavy meal then I could barely steer for long. Hence I placed an order for only 1 Paneer Parantha. By exceeding my expectations they served me a big parantha, which killed all my limits to drive for that day and right after 500 KM’s, I decided to take a halt in Chittorgarh Instead of Udaipur. I checked-in Castle Narela, Chittorgarh. It’s a beautiful budgeted 3* resort cum motel located at a distance of 1KM from main highway. The total distance I had covered on day 1 was only 596 KM’s.

DAY 2: Chittorgarh to Vadodra

The next morning, I was fresh and energetic and started my engine at around 02:00 PM.

Food Review of Dal – Batti – Churma on roadside Dhaba (New Sharma Bhojnalaya) | Chittor – Udaipur Highway

The breakfast can’t be anything else other than authentic Rajasthani “Dal Batti”, so I stopped at dhaba where they served the Dal – Batti – Churma in a different style. Owner of Dhaba came with a smile and said “bhaiya ji Churma khaiye humara” and I opted for it! I think after so long I had that much desi ghee in one meal, around 200 ML. Taste of that meal is unforgettable and so far that was the best!

Quick Tip: Avoid the Udaipur Bypass till the time it is not fully constructed. It’s more congested in the daytime as compare to the traffic condition of the main city.

After crossing Udaipur, you will see the most scenic and beautiful range of Aravalli. Hills containing natural minerals are lying on the both sides of the road and small lakes you would find every 10-15 KM’s. If you are crossing this section, you might want to get down to click some amazing shots of roads but don’t stay outside for long as these minerals are in the air which may cause uneasiness to you after ½ an hour. Villages Kids might want to talk to you for a while, enjoy the kittenish conversation however please avoid any offerings to them as they are getting used to with these offerings.

After 120 KM’s of drive I entered in Gujarat and all of the sudden everything was changed. People got different language, food, dress and even looks.

Quick Tip: Avoid taking the route “Shamlaji – Himmatnagar – Ahmedabad – Vadodara” and always opt for Shamlaji – Modasa – Godhra – Vadodara. This route is shorter in distance, the road condition is superb and no toll taxes are applicable since this route comes under state highways and Gujarat State Highway don’t collect any Toll Taxes from Cars. Only limitation on this route is that it doesn’t offer so many options for food until you reach Vadodara.

Food Review of Vada Pav at Jay Bhavani Vadapav

After entering in Gujarat, I saw Jay Bhavani outlet on my right hand side at Modasa and I stopped immediately to grab Vadapav and Sing Slice (Butter on White Bread with some spicy peanuts on top of it). Their Vada Pav has a unique flavor plus they pan-fry the bun with butter which brings more crispiness in taste. Here I learned that eating raw cheese on top of any bread is as tasty as when it’s cooked. Jay Bhavani is a famous chain-restaurant of Gujarat which serves Vadapav, Dabeli, Sandwiches, Pizza, Maskabun, sing slice and few south Indian cuisine. In 2015-16, I had stayed in Ahmedabad for around 6 months and in the last 3 months of my stay it became my habit to visit Prahlad Nagar outlet every evening. I had tried almost all everything in their menu and still can’t resist to visit again. I hope they will open their outlets in other cities and states as well.

Drove another 200 KM’s and just before reaching to Vadodara I stopped at a Dhaba where I ordered “cheese butter masala” with roti… yes you’re guessing it correct, I booked the room in Vadodra (laugh out loud). Wait, have you heard of this Cheese Butter Masala Curry before? No? Put this item in your list and try it whenever you are coming to Gujarat. Before reaching to my hotel, I also went to Ratri Bazaar in Vadodra where I had…aaa….I don’t remember (ha ha ha). I think you forgot, I am half asleep.

Day 3: Vadodara – Konkan

I would like to add a negative note for Sayajiganj Area and Hotel Jalsagar . This is a shady area in Vadodara where none of the hotel owners are taking you seriously. Same thing happened with me in Hotel Jalsagar where first they gave me a room which was NOT even looking like as per the pictures shown in all the travel sites. They always give the same excuse to all the travelers that pictures we saw belongs to a premium room which we can’t even book from any site. Hotel Staff and Bell Boys are so rude and they were even ready to fight with me. Their room stinks and were dirty! One can’t stay here. Don’t fall for their cheap rates because in the end you are paying more than the worth of their rooms.

Ufff… Around 11 AM I checked out from Hotel and went for the breakfast; “Fafda with Kadi” and continued my journey. After crossing few KM’s, I start hopping at various food outlets which were new to me like; Por (light and health snack comes in the form of Peas) and;

Undhiyu (mixed vegetables cooked on coalfire in earther pot).

Also, I stopped at Chocolate factory of Schmitten.

Quick Tip: Get your Tank Full before entering in Maharashtra, In Gujarat you will get Rs 7-8/liter cheaper petrol as compare to Maharasthra (As per Jan-July 2018).

I continued my journey and entered in Maharasthra at around 8 PM and faced huge traffic jam before reaching to Thane. There I crossed Thane around 12:00 AM and I entered in Konkan region via NH 66. After entering in Konkan, had the PavBhaji on local dhaba at around 12:30. Drove another 60-80 KM’s and stopped at a Dhaba to take a nap at around 02:00 AM.

Day 4: Somewhere in Konkan to Ashvem Beach, Goa

Good Morning! I woke up at around 07:30 AM and start my day from that point (unknown location). I was still 425 KM away from Goa. I stop-by at a Dhaba where they allowed me to get freshen up and have a bath.

Quick Tip: If you can sleep in your car, there is no need to spend on Hotel Rooms. Showers / Washrooms you can get it on any roadside dhaba’s / restaurants.

It’s time to have the third variety of breakfast in my third state; Maharashtra. I had ordered almost all the options Vada Pav, Misal Pav, Kanda Bhaji at Nirmal Vishranti (slurp). They had served very hygienic and tasty food.

I always suggest everyone to avoid the national highway’s and take this Konkan route to see natural beauty lying within this route. I had invested enough time at every spot, view point, lakes and food outlets. If you are traveling in summers, have some varieties of Mangoes as Ratnagiri district is worldwide famous for varieties of Mangoes.

Quick Tip: Coming by Road and if you are staying in North Goa. Take the right cut towards Ashwem Beach and then where your hotel is located. By doing this you can avoid the toll tax of Rs 250/- applied on every car and fuel for around 25KM’s.

At 09:42 PM I reached Goa. 😌

Dream Come True | Delhi To Goa Road Trip

How many of you believe on this? Well I do, and yes now I can boast off that I lived my dream and made it happen. I am not talking about some fantasy land stories, but for some it was like this before I made this happen. Since 2012 I was living the dream of Delhi To Goa Road Trip, and after like almost 5 years I made it happen, yes one dream of mine got unchecked finally.

Like promises, Goa plans too are meant to be broken..Goa Se Bulawa Aya Hai 😛

keep aside the emotional touch, this is coming straight from personal experience. For some it might be laughable like me.

If you have been following my journeys from last 2 years or so, might have seen on my social media posts about my Vaishno Devi visit. Don’t get confused people, I will stick to Delhi To Goa Road Trip only, its a small part only.

In previous two years I visited Vaishno Devi twice, but I would say it took me 32 years to reach. It is very rightly said “Mata Ka Bulawa Aata hai, Koi Apne Aap Nahi Jaa Sakta (Vaishno mata invites you, one can’t visit on his own) “. Can’t remember, how many times I was inside 100 km range of Vaishno Devi, but Mata had not invited me. But when Mata called me, within a week I was there at her door, chanting Jai Mata di Jai Mata di.

Same I would say happens for Goa. Even on facebook I have seen this joke coming often on timeline “Goa ka plan to banta hi hai cancel hone ke liye (Goa plan is made to be cancelled) . My first trip to Goa happened in 2012, I was there for a friends marriage. It was 2012 only when Me and Goa made a pact, “we will meet soon buddy”.

Being Unplanned Was The Plan

Since 2012 every year it would happen, me and wife would plan “Lets plan a Delhi to Goa Road trip”. Maps would be checked, hotels shortlisted, places to visit, all jotted down. But very less people win over destiny, and plan would be cancelled sooner than we could think.

This time being unplanned was the plan. No mapping no hotels nothing, just a date finalized, 11th of July. All was kept unplanned, just to start the trip was agenda. We knew once we are on road, eventually we would reach our destination.

Toughest part was to keep Madam ji less excited. That same question thrown everyday towards me “Delhi to Goa road trip status daaldun facebook par (Shall I post the Delhi to Goa trip status on my facebook)” . Here it was tough for me to make her understand the concept of “Travelers curse or Jinx” . Many a times I have heard, you tell your travel plan to somebody and a PANOTI (Curse) would fall on your plans. So keep it low my dear, keep the excitement for the last minute. Finally the D day had arrived.

Lets Begin The Journey : Delhi To Goa Road trip

Morning 3.30 AM Madam ji couldn’t sleep whole night, don’t know it was Goa or the excitement of road trip which had kept her awake whole night. Trip was about to start, bags were packed, Aloo parantha’s and Sandwiches were ready. Yes this was our way to save time on the first day, which mattered the most.

Like said before, Being unplanned was the plan but yes one plan was there, final destination has to be reached as soon as we can. Goa was in mind which was around 1836 km away as told by Google baba, though he made fool of us.

Udaipur : First stop of the Delhi to Goa Road trip

We had left our place at 4.30 AM, though as told to our parents we were going to leave at 8.00 AM, but to avoid the panic stage of them, left early a bit. Parents being the first reason, traffic was the second behind this so early heads up. Target was to cross Udaipur first day and reach at least Surat by night.

It is very rightly said, What you Aim for? There is no surety you will achieve it or not?

By the evening, around 6.ooPM we had reached Udaipur, sunset of Udaipur was right in front of us. But if I say in my typical Delhi language “Pichwaade ki band baj chuki thi(Won’t translate on English :-P)” . It has been like 14 hrs sitting in one position, stopped only for some 20 mins to have a cup of tea and the very famous “Kadhi Kachori” of Rajasthan.

Finally it was decided to spend the night at Udaipur only. After sitting in an angular position for like 14 hrs, shav aasan was much needed.

Journey Continues : 2nd Stop “Mumbai”….

Battery was recharged for another leg of the journey. Trust me when there is no itinerary, no plan, things become actually very manageable. We knew our destination was still 2 days far, but we were not in hurry. Speed meter of car continuously fixed between 80-90 km/hr. What is the need of going on bullet speed, it nullifies the main purpose of a road trip, enjoying the beauty on the way.

We were back on road, why to switch on the AC when monsoon had started showing it signs. Yes, this was the main reason of this Road trip, this year we wanted a bit longer monsoon. And those living in Delhi knows how short it is here so we decided to enter the monsoon clouds, lets say hello to them.

We were still short of around 700 Kms from our next destination of the day, Mumbai. By the time we would reach there it would be night. We had booked our hotel in Panvel, intentionally skipping the Mumbai, we knew we would have to leave early so why to get stuck in traffic jams and above all the pot holes on roads.

Trust me you Mumbai friends, if you are reading this post of mine, take this as a request. You need to do something of your roads or to say “Road in between those pot holes”. Yes to be honest I was unable to understand “Road mai pot holes hain, ya pot holes mai road hai :-P”. In my whole tour, I got the worst road in that part when I entered the Maharashtra border and went towards Panvel, in the end wise decision to avoid Mumbai.

Ab Goa Duur Nahi : Final stretch of the Tour …. Yayyyyy 

Now this part, I know how much sad I am right now writing about this last stretch. Nostalgia is that feeling which most of times makes you sad, irrespective of the time which gave that feeling. End result would always be feeling of sadness, I would say most of times this rule prevails.

Do I need to say more after this picture of mine???  Ok Fine, Rulakar hi Manoge…

Now just imagine this. A person living in Delhi, in one of the smallest urbanized village of Delhi, who has to go to the main road to see the full size of a cloud. Just imagine, while I take a pause to gulp down the nostalgia of that day.

What would happen to him when he would see such a scene? A scene like a war is going on between the two kings and army is standing with all the armors loaded in form of Rain drops, and you are standing in the middle. I was witnessing the battle of Troy, that too Live.

If you have been to such a situation then only you would be able to understand my pain right now. To be honest this was something new for me, had never seen such beautiful clouds in Delhi, shaping up like cotton but anytime going to mingle and giving me the most happy moment of this Roadtrip.

That Last Leg…

Till now we had traveled more than 1500 km’s and still some 400 more were left according to GPS Auntie. Dream was coming into reality, and decision to take the road was turning fruitful. This back pain, this long journey, some had said save time and go by train or flight, I was going to prove them wrong.

A strange person “Black clouds” was standing right in front me, whose address we have been searching from so long. it was the time to say Hello to them….. We stopped there for a while on this flyover on the highway, strange fresh air on the highway was something which was never thought off. Let’s move on, I know you too is in a hurry to reach Goa.

Touch Down Baby : Goa it is … Abhi to party shuru hui

Finally we had reached. After travelling long 2095 km’s, yes you read right and even I am laughing while writing this figure. Before we had left, I had planned for four long years for this journey. Every year kilometers remained same via GPS which was 1836 km’s, but where this stretch became longer I am still confused.

GPS Bua ji had supported us in whole tour, but don’t know where she took the longer stretch and made a difference of good long 300 km approx.

Like I had said to Madam ji, “We are moving towards monsoon madam, Rain would be heavy so be ready for a flop show” , same happened. We entered Goa around 9 in the night, it was heavily raining, and the same line came. Car vipers were on the full, it was tough to see, like whole trip we were being guided by GPS Bua ji. She has done her best till now.

Finally around 9.45 PM we reached our hotel, touch down baby, finally landed the foot in Goa, oh suddenly I feel like Neil Armstrong. What his feeling would have been when he landed on Moon, same was happening to us.

Masti Time in Goa….

This Road trip was going to be awesome, we knew this from the starting. After crossing so many states, we had arrived to another part of India. But as I said, party to abhi shuru hui hai, Goa ka Bulawa aaya hai and we were going to enjoy every bit of it.

I am not fond of Selfie’s to be honest, but this tour was going another way. It was the weather of whole trip which brought these mood swings. Never did Live video on facebook or Instagram but this time it happened.

Final words for the Day…..

Where there is a will, there is a way.

This would be my last words to summarize this whole tour. I had the will to do this tour, knew it was going to happen some day and it happened. It might take some time to fulfill your dreams but its the will to achieve them which matters.

It took me 32 years to visit Vaishno Devi temple, but I kept waiting for the right moment. Same would say for this Delhi to Goa Road trip. Got planned, got cancelled but I never stopped thinking about it and finally made it, and here it is in front of your screen.

Okay, here I stop. But I am sure many would be thinking “What did it cost?”. Well I have a knack writing down the expenses incurred in any trip done by me, and same was done here.

• Jaipur and Udaipur are two of India’s most delightful destinations. Take the time to stroll the enchanting and very different streets of these colourful centres with your small group.

• It’s important to prepare for hot, sticky temperatures during the day and cooler climates in the evening. Light layers are the best way to tackle this disparity in weather. Please also ensure you use adequate sun protection and drink plenty of water.
• We visit several temples on this trip, which requires a certain level of modesty. Please bring clothes that cover the arms and pants/skirts that go past the knees. A light scarf is also a good idea for covering shoulders and arms when it’s hot.
• This trip involves some long overnight train journeys, including a 9 hour overnight train to Goa. While these train journeys can be tiring, it's also a great opportunity to get to know your fellow travellers a little better and travel like a local. Welcome to India! Arrive in the fun and frenetic capital of Delhi and settle into your hotel. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm, where you’ll meet your group leader and travel pals. After your meeting, take an orientation walk to get your bearings and perhaps head out for an optional dinner with your group.

Start your day with a ride on the metro. Your tour heads first to Old Delhi – the heart of the city. Inch your way through the streets around the Chandni Chowk marketplace in true local style – by cycle rickshaw! Visit the Jama Masjid – Delhi's oldest (and India’s largest) mosque – and then stop by the Sheeshganj Gurudwara (Sikh Temple). Learn about the Sikh guru who, in the 17th century, stuck to his religious beliefs and paid the ultimate price in this very spot. This afternoon is free to explore more of Delhi's sights at your own pace!

Agra itself may not be the world’s prettiest city, but the minute you see its iconic sights, that won’t matter one bit. You will arrive by one of India's express air-conditioned trains (approximately 3 hours), then head straight to the most recognisable sight in India. The Taj Mahal may well exceed your expectations as the light shimmers off its white marble surface. Best known as a monument to love and loss, the 17th century Taj is a beautiful example of Mughal architecture, surrounded by trimmed English gardens. The highlights keep coming as you take a motorised rickshaw tour around town – a great way to see the monuments of Agra. You can also visit Akbar's Mausoleum, a beautiful sandstone and marble tomb built for the greatest of the Mughal emperors. Stop off for an optional meal at Sheroes Hangout, a cafe that supports victims of acid attacks.

Travel by public bus to Rajasthan’s colourful capital, Jaipur. Settle into your hotel, then enjoy a walk through the streets and markets of this ‘Pink City’. Use the rest of the day to explore the city on your own, perhaps visiting Jaipur’s ornate Royal City Palace. Your accommodation for tonight is a family-run heritage hotel. In the evening, perhaps take the opportunity to see a Bollywood film. Jaipur is home to one of the world's great cinema halls – the grand art-deco Raj Mandir.

For many travellers, an optional hot air balloon experience is one of the highlights of Jaipur, and today would be the ideal day to book in on one. In the afternoon, visit the hilltop Amber Fort, an excellent example of Rajput architecture, and see the red stone palace of the Hawa Mahal (The Palace of the Winds). Take in its dazzling coloured glass work and learn its interesting history.

Travel to Pushkar by public bus and then private vehicle via the town of Ajmer. Pushkar is one of India's holiest towns and a market centre for the surrounding villages. Head out to explore the town on a walking tour, stopping in at the main bazaar along the way. Here you'll come across anything from 1960s fashion and glass lamps to jewellery and traditional Rajasthani puppets. Then, take a walk around Pushkar’s lake, which is considered sacred in Hindu culture and has an interesting mythology behind it. Wander past the bustling ghats and temples, observing the devout as they worship at the city’s holy waters.

Early morning risers may like to hike up the hill to the Savitri Temple for sunrise views over the town. If the chai wallah is there, enjoy a steaming cup of tea at the top! Later in the day, you will pay a visit to the colourful Brahma Temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu god-creator Brahma. If you’re lucky enough to be in town for the Pushkar Camel Fair, you can experience one of India’s most famous festivals. It's held every November.

The Pushkar Camel Fair is held in November each year. We will do all we can to ensure that travellers booked with a trip to coincide with the fair will get an opportunity to see the best of the festival, but we cannot take responsibility if the dates of the fair change. Pushkar hotels raise their rates considerably during the festival, so departures across this period may be at a higher price. Although we make bookings months in advance, accommodation in Pushkar tends to overbook at this time. That’s why we ask for a flexible approach from people travelling at this time as accommodation, the order of activities and type of transport may need to change.

Continue on to your next destination today, travelling by private vehicle back to Ajmer and then day train to Udaipur. Known as the ‘Venice of the East’, this white city is often regarded as the most romantic in India. Set amid the Aravalli Hills, Udaipur curls around a huge lake. On arrival, take a leader-led city walk to get your bearings around town. Explore twisting alleyways filled with shops and bazaars selling things like silver jewellery, shoes, bags, leather goods, and miniature paintings.

Enjoy a free day to explore the sights of Udaipur. Season depending, why not take a short boat ride on the famous Lake Pichola and see the palaces of Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas rise out of the water. Take a guided tour of the lakeside City Palace complex, the largest palace in Rajasthan. While inside, check out vivid murals and royal antiques, and pop into the impressive Jagdish Temple that’s dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Alternatively, you could learn the secrets behind making the perfect Indian thali during a half-day cooking class.

Enjoy another free day in Udaipur before your overnight train to Mumbai. You might like to spend the day exploring Shilpgram – an interesting artistic neighbourhood just a few km away from town. Here, you can see a range of village houses from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra with exhibitions on display (season depending). Board your train to Mumbai from Falna station and settle in for your night travelling like the locals.

Sleeper trains are clean and air-conditioned, and beds are padded berths with sheets, pillows and blankets provided (although some people prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet). You may be sharing with locals of the same or opposite genders.

Wake up in Mumbai, perhaps the most cosmopolitan city in India. You will take a short walk through the heritage quarter of Mumbai, the nearby Gateway of India, and the famous Taj Hotel. Discover some of the beautiful old colonial and art deco buildings, treat yourself to a meal in one of the country's best restaurants, or shop ‘til you drop in the bazaars and malls. Later in the day, visit Chowpatty Beach where colourful crowds mill about in the cooler evening air. Palm readers, balloon sellers, magicians, and acrobats all compete for your attention. A great optional activity is to visit Elephanta Island. Easily accessible by ferry from Mumbai, it's about 10 km from the south-east coast of the island city. Boats leave daily from the Gateway of India (approximately 1 hour each way).

While away the day in Mumbai, with a full day free to explore at your own pace. You might like to wander through the Hanging Gardens or take a half-day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Elephant Caves. Take a walk along Marine Drive beside the Arabian Sea or hang out by the picteresque Bombay High Court. Your leader will also have some great suggestions, including the best spots for a good feed! Keep in mind, you’ll board an overnight sleeper train bound for Goa tonight.

Arrive in Goa nice and early and check into your hotel. Take a walk to acquaint yourself with Goa and its relaxed tropical atmosphere. You're bound to see the Portuguese influence that is ever so present in the city's whitewashed churches. There's an optional visit to a local spice farm today, which gives you a fascinating look behind the rich aromas and flavours of some of India's essential ingredients. Goa's dense forested areas and favourable climatic conditions make it a perfect location to grow the spices liberally used in its cuisine, and all the spice farms use organic methods of cultivation. A tour of the plantation culminates in a mouth-watering Goan buffet lunch – so what’s not to like?

The day is yours to spend as you please, and there's no shortage of things to do in this unique coastal spot. A bicycle trip to the countryside is a great option. For a more spiritual kind of exertion, spend the day seeking a little enlightenment with a touch of yoga. Otherwise, take this opportunity to relax on the beach or sip a cocktail at a local bar. Tonight, why not join your group for an Indian feast – the local seafood is definitely a winner.
