Instead of taking a tour of the city, how about leaving it instead? And heading up the coastline to Alella , a nearby town famous for its urban wineries. The start of the ride is a little industrial, but very soon you’ll cycling through scenic coastal towns, next to golden beaches and the sparkling Mediterranean. After about an hour’s ride you will reach Alella, where you will enjoy a guided walk through the vineyards and cellars, before sitting on the winery’s terrace to enjoy ecological wine tastings and sea views. Don’t worry about drinking too much wine, as you will be returning to Barcelona via windpower, on an elegant sailing yacht. Feel free to take a snooze on deck! You can book this activity directly with the organisers, Sailing Experience. ( Note: while it’s possible to sail to the winery and cycle back, or even cycle both ways, I would go with the bike, then wine, then sailing option, for safety and comfort. I did this experience myself a couple of years back and I highly recommend it!).

Pros of Ebikes

Electric bicycles have several advantages over mechanical bikes :

  • Power assisted pedalling makes getting around the city almost zero effort – even over the hilly bits, like Montjuic.
  • You can travel further in less time, and see more of Barcelona’s iconic attractions.
  • The extra zip of the motor means e-bikes are simply more fun to ride!

Cons of Ebikes

Are there any cons to consider?

  • They are marginally less environmentally friendly than pedal bikes, as they require a battery that needs charging (but still more sustainable than cars, buses or metro!).
  • As they are a bit heavier and more powerful, they are best ridden by proficient cyclists, especially in the city.
  • Ebike tours tend to cost a bit more than their mechanical equivalents. The market price is about €15 per hour duration of the tour, so expect to pay around €45 for a 3-hr tour, for example, or €60 for a 4-hr excursion.

Renting Ebikes

For total independence you can hire your own set of wheels, however the costs involve mean tours probably represent better value for money for most people.

To grab a bike from the Old Town area then look no further than the appropriately named E-Bike Rent , whose wheels cost from €29 a day.

You can also rent an Ocean Bike for €35 a day, and their Port Olimpic hub is a great starting point for checking out the city beaches. For more on them and other options head to this page .

Different Tour Options

If getting a bit sweaty is all part of the fun for you, then check out these regular bike tours , and give your legs and heart a little work out.

Love motorised transport? Then you might want to consider another way of zipping around Barcelona… on a segway tour !

Or maybe, after all that, you prefer to explore on foot ? In which case check out these recommended walking tours.

See the stadiums, apartments, and park developed for the Olympiad 30 years ago. From here you'll have amazing views of the city and out to the Mediterranean Sea.

Jairo Co-founder

After crossing the whole world during more than ten years and coming back on a bike from China, he settles in his hometown Barcelona to guide tours through the city, the best job he could have imagined. ¨It´s not me the one who travels the world to get to know its people, but the travellers from all around come to visit me.¨

Agata Guide

' title=

Linguist, enthusiastic reader and traveller by soul, lover of the Indian philosophy and the ancient cultures of the world, writing is her passion. She was attracted by the love for art and history to the city of Barcelona and her sensible insight into the events of the city will enchant you and make you fall in love with it.

' title=

Journalist by profession, actor … Communicating is his big passion. His knowledge of Gaudí’s works and of the history of the city will make you see it through different eyes. He uses to say: ¨acting and guiding through my city a pretty much the same¨ …. It´s all an experience.

Montse Guia

Trained as an scriptwriter and actress, she is the perfect person to weave together the sights, sounds and stories of Barcelona. She spent a number of years living abroad before realizing there’s nowhere quite like her home city. “I’m in love with Barcelona” is where everything can happen: the city as a white page, as a stage, a character itself.

Maria Co-founder

About the itinerary

The Gaudí Ebike Tour begins at  Arc de Triomf , a monument designed by the architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas as the main entrance to the 1888 Universal Exhibition. The style is  Neomudéjar , a trend that emerged in 19th century Europe, which sought to imitate and recreate the ancient Islamic art, as a result of the fascination for the exotic art of the East countries.

The tour continues in the  Parc de la Ciutadella , an enormous park that hosts  El Castell dels Tres Dragons . This is the popular name that receives this modernist palace built in 1887 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner for the 1888 Universal Exhibition. Passing through the Born district we find  Els 4 Gats , an old modernist café and the  Palau de la Música Catalana , a music auditorium that still hosts concerts of choral, orchestral and instrumental music.

The Gaudí eBike Tour jumps to the  Passeig de Gràcia  where we find some of the most known Gaudí works and the jewels in the crown of the Catalan modernism:  Casa Calvet ,  Casa Batlló  and especially  Casa Milà . The latter was Antoni Gaudí´s project for the Milà family and it was built in 1906. It is one of the essential designs of the Catalan genius and one of the most imaginative works in the history of architecture.

This area with the most famous set of modernist buildings in Barcelona is known by the locals as “ La Manzana de la Discordia ” (the bone of contention). The name comes from the existing rivalry between the architects of modernism and, in fact, their owners for having the most beautiful building of the cited block of houses. In addition, there is the parallelism offered by the fact that in the Greek legend the symbol is an apple and in Spanish the word “manzana” also means a block of houses.

Along the Diagonal Avenue we find  La Casa de les Punxes , a castle-shaped building crowned by six pointed towers, and the  Casa Comalat , a modernist palace built by Salvador Valeri Pupurull. Entering the  Gràcia  neighborhood we find the  Casa Fuster , another great work of Catalan modernism that nowadays is a hotel. The Tour takes you through the Gràcia neighborhood to the  Mercat de la Llibertat , Pascual Tintorer’s project for the old town of Gràcia that still maintains its modernist style.

A little further up we find  Casa Vicens , Gaudí´s first major project after getting his architect degree in 1878. We also find in the Gràcia neighborhood the  Palau Macaya , a 1901 work by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

The penultimate stop of the tour is one of the most visited monuments in the whole world:  La Sagrada Familia . This expiatory temple is a monumental church based on the project of the diocesan architect Francisco de Paula Del Villar. In 1883 Gaudí was entrusted to finish the job, a task he did not leave until his death in 1926. Since then, several architects have continued the work following Gaudí´s original idea.

The Gaudí Ebike Tour ends in the  Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau , a modernist compound born in 1401 with the merger of six different hospitals. An ambitious rehabilitation process has recovered the heritage and artistic value of this Modernist campus, designed by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. From there we go back to the starting point.

You will witness Antoni Gaudí’s spectacular contribution to turning Barcelona into a world-level reference. You will discover his style, his influences and all the different phases of his artistic work, understanding where it comes from. In the tour you will train your eye to recognize the catalan modernism style wherever you go.

You will ride through the luxurious  Passeig de Gràcia  in the Eixample and you will cross the bohemian neighborhood of Gràcia, to reach the modernist  Hospital de Sant Pau . All the different neighborhoods of Barcelona have works of Gaudí and Catalan modernism monuments that sometimes are hidden. With the Gaudí Ebike Tour you won´t miss any of them.

We will tell you about the conversion of a military fortress into an urban park with modernist buildings at the end of the 19th century. The visit to the different parks of the city will help you to understand the Catalan modernist style and its close relationship with nature, reflected in most of Antoni Gaudí’s works.
