Camel Safaris in Jaisalmer and Bikaner: What to Know

Explore the Desert on a Camel Safari in India

desert safari tourism in india

Like in Jordan , one of the most unforgettable and enchanting experiences you can have in India is to ride through the rippling, windswept desert on camel back and camp out under the stars. Taking a camel safari will also give you the opportunity to witness the rustic, rural desert life of India. While the desert can be barren, it's also surprisingly well populated. Here's what you need to know to plan your trip.

Where Can You Go on a Camel Safari?

The most popular place for camel safaris in India is in the desert around Jaisalmer , in Rajasthan. To have the best experience, it's important to consider which location is most suitable for you. Most tourists head to the Sam sand dunes, which are unappealingly commercial and crowded these days. The sand dunes near Khuri village in Desert National Park are more peaceful but have started to attract their share of tourists. If you book a camel safari package from Jaisalmer, it will most likely include a stop at abandoned Kuldhara village on the way to Khuri.

Bikaner, also in Rajasthan, is another popular option for camel safaris. However, the desert is nowhere near as impressive as Jaisalmer. You'll be disappointed if you go there expecting undulating sand dunes because they no longer exist. Instead, the safaris generally focus on visiting isolated desert villages.

Great camel safaris can be done at lesser-known Osian (about an hour and a half north of Jodhpur on the way to Bikaner. Stay at Reggie's Camel Camp or Osian Sand Dunes Resort and Camp . The interesting temples at Osian are an added attraction. Manvar Desert Camp and Resort is an exclusive option in the desert at Khiyansariya (between Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner).

Many camel safari companies will allow you to choose your route, so you can decide if you want to take the road less traveled or the more touristy track. Be specific about it. Otherwise, you'll most likely end up in close proximity to lots of other tourists around Sam or Khuri in Jaisalmer.

If you do want to go on an offbeat sightseeing tour, Vedic Walks offers an overnight Desert Camel Safari and Camping Experience near Pushkar. It includes a safari through villages and a unique spiritual walking tour of the town. Dharma Camel Safari is another option in Puskhar that gets good feedback.

In addition, it's possible to go on a camel safari in the the alpine desert in Ladakh, mainly in the Nubra Valley from Hundar to Diskit . The camels on these trips are the double hump Bactrian variety.

Reputable Camel Safari Companies in Jaisalmer and Bikaner

Be sure to take care when booking your camel safari as the business is very competitive and it's definitely a case of you get what you pay for. Cheaper deals may seem appealing initially, but you'll find that the quality of food, bedding, and other necessities is lower. There will be more people in the group too. Make sure you find out exactly what the arrangements will be, such as whether dinner will be provided at a nearby village or a cook will make it for you over an open fire in the desert.

Most hotels and backpacker hostels in Jaisalmer sell camel safaris (for a commission). However, it's better to go with specialist operators, so you can be sure of what you're getting. Recommended ones include Sahara Travels (next to the Fort gate), Trotters Independent Travel , and Real Desert Man Camel Safaris. Their websites contain details of the various safari packages available. The safaris offered by Shahi Palace, Hotel Pleasant Haveli , Wanderlust Hostel , and Toffu Hotel and are also decent. Many offer non-touristy options away from the crowds.

If heading to Khuri, you can arrive by 4 p.m. and negotiate your camel safari directly with the camps there (they're all situated in a row). On a standard evening safari, you'll spend sunset in the sand dunes and return to the camp for dinner and a cultural program, before leaving for Jaisalmer at about 8.30 p.m.

If you really want to go off the beaten path and have a rustic experience, far from the tourist trail, try The Adventure Travel Agency in Jaisalmer. They'll take you a long camel safari out towards Barmer, sleeping under the stars on army bedding in the dunes.

There are fewer options for camel safaris in Bikaner. The oldest and most well-known operators are Vino Desert Safari, Rao Bikaji Camel Safari , and Camel Man.

Duration of Camel Safaris

It's possible to go on a quick camel safari and return the same day. However, most people prefer to go deeper into the desert for a few days. Many choose the overnight option, which is sensible as it can become monotonous otherwise (and you're likely to end up with a sore bum). This consists of riding the camel into the desert, watching the sunset, having dinner, star gazing, waking up for sunrise, and then riding back. Desert sunsets and sunrises are pretty darn spectacular!

Longer options, up to 30 days are available for hardcore enthusiasts! You can get an itinerary tailored to meet your needs.

How Much Will it Cost?

The price of camel safaris varies according to the route, standard of food and comfort provided. In Jaisalmer, rates start from around 1,000 rupees per person for a reputable sunset camel ride into the dunes and cultural program. Expect to pay 1,600 rupees upwards for a full-day (sunrise and sunset) camel safari package. Quality overnight camel safaris start from around 1,800 rupees per person. However, this can increase to 3,000 rupees for top-of-the-range camping (or glamping!) facilities.

Prices can be negotiated, so don't book anything in advance.

What to Expect

Riding a camel can become surprisingly uncomfortable after a while. Many people complain of having very sore legs and bums by the end of their journey.

On the most basic safaris, you'll be sleeping out under the stars either on a camp bed or on the ground. There are no toilets on these safaris. You'll have to go wild! The more luxurious safaris have established camps with Swiss tents and attached toilets.

The best time is during the cooler dry months, from September to March. After March, the desert becomes unbearably hot, and then the monsoon season starts. It doesn't rain much though, and temperatures remain high. Camel safaris usually depart early in the morning to allow some distance to be covered, and a suitable camping spot to be found and set up, before dusk.

What to Take with You

Bring something comfortable and padded to sit on to make the journey less painful if you're going on a longer safari.

Other useful items to bring include sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, toilet paper, flashlight, insect repellent, water bottle, toothbrush and toothpaste, sleeping bag liner and plenty of warm clothing as it can get cold in the desert at night. Do be aware that you won't be able to bathe in the desert, so wet wipes will definitely come in handy as well.

I am a regular wildlife photographer and chose this trip to see free tigers in their own territory. Everything was curated and managed with a high level of care and Manish and his team was always in touch to take care of each and every aspect of the tour. I would recommend them if you wish to travel to India with a tension free attitude. Thanks a lot to MTA and their team who made our trip successful.

I had to cancel the tour for personal reasons. This review is in praise of the thoughtful and understanding treatment that I received from Sunil at Alkof. He spend a lot of time explaining everything to me before and booked. Then, when I had to cancel, he was sympathetic and refunded my deposit. I've travelled a great deal and there are many tour operators who are untrustworthy. Alkof has shown itself to be honest and reliable.

Our family had a customized tour that included all three national parks for tiger safaris as well as the traditional golden triangle tour. We had 2 different drivers during the tour that picked us up at the airport or drove us to the next location. The drivers were always early, extremely friendly and helpful, and the cars were immaculate. We stayed at six different hotels that were picked out for us. They were all very nice and I would stay at them again. The guides at each location were very knowledgeable and friendly. The company itself stayed in contact with me throughout the trip to make sure I did not need anything. I would highly recommend this company. This tour was much more flexible and convenient than participating in a group tour where everyone has to keep up with a group pace.

For The Love of Taj & Tiger - Golden Triangle of India & Ranthambore with 3 Tiger Safaris Tour

For The Love of Taj & Tiger - Golden Triangle of India & Ranthambore with 3 Tiger Safaris

Good organised. Some guides were ok and some better. 1) Delhi : Really good experience with the guide ,lots of information shared. We would have liked that Akshardham temple is included and Jama Mashid is excluded. 2) Jaipur : Could had recommended to take a flight as the whole day was just travelling due to traffic conditions, partly we delayed but the route was exhausting and was just a trip in car. Jaipur guide was again excellent and informative where needed. We saw palaces, had good food and a nice tour around Jaipur. We also managed to do more things which really appreciated. 3) Ranthambore : Nature lovers would see this as a highlight of the entire tour. In General everything worked out but we found missing details like a) exact timings/schedule of the Safari. b) Organisation of breakfast as it collided with the morning Safari as it starts at 7 but we were picked up at 5:30 in the morning .( We were lucky that our safari ended early and we were in time for breakfast) We saw lots of animals, luckily the tigress Noor and a leopard on the hunt. 4) Fatepur Sikri : The guide rushed through the small tour and was not so keen on giving details. 5) Agra : Guide was excellent. We had lots of detailed mini tours of Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Baby Taj and we still had time at all these places too. No rushing. We also got the opportunity to see a short presentation of marble work. 6)Vrindavan: on the way to Delhi we also visited vrindawan and here the guide was a bit disappointing as he gave talked not so good English and not a lot of details. This was 90 min tour though. We had through all this a very experienced driver and keen to help and when asked on some recommendations he could give quality recommendations on restaurants, places General comments :

Golden Triangle Delhi Agra Jaipur With Ranthambore National Park Tour

Golden Triangle Delhi Agra Jaipur With Ranthambore National Park

This was a great experience but... And it's a big BUT: this is not for everyone. Coming to India would be a life changing experience and if you're willing to open your heart and lower your expectations, you will have great fun! Unfortunately for me "opening my heart" and "and lowering expectations" needs to be worked out a little bit and that's why the overall experience is 3 stars. The whole trip was truly amazing and I learned a lot. The tour shines on this and it will not disappoint. With that being said, please keep ALWAYS on mind that Indians are very pushy, all the times (to the level where you just surrender or you go berserk). Expect them to ask you thousands of times if you're ok, expect them to ask you for money ALL THE TIME (and if you give them, they will ask for more or put you a prune face), expect them to take you to overpriced places where they get commission (be careful and don't trust anyone, including the driver and guides) and more over, expect them to lie A LOT and not just from this tour but in the general. It's embedded in their nature. This company can do better and improve this, but again, come with an open heart and NO expectations. Some examples from this tour that will put your patience at test: they will tell you you're his best friend and then when you tip them, will be very unhappy. They expect you to tip at least $50 per guide and driver will expect at least $100 (be careful if you come in a budget). They will repeatedly ask your for tips directly or indirectly. They will suggest places where you will overpay and give you random excuses (The good thing is that they depend on these reviews so if you got involved on any abusive situation just let them know and they will try to fix it). Remember that you're in power and you can always say NO. Do NOT be afraid to hurt feelings, they are in a very different world, in a reality that is beyond hard and they need to make money and survive. Please do not let this review not book with them, the trip was truly amazing, but again, come with a big open heart and expect the unexpected.

We had been to Africa on a safari trip before and thought that it couldn't get any better than that. But we were surprised when we went to India. The experience between the two continents is so vast. Africa has abundant wildlife, but India has an even more exciting wildlife experience. This is the real thing. We would highly recommend this company to others because they provided us with a seamless experience from pickup to our drop-off, with excellent guides and drivers in the middle. Our expectations were fairly high before we started, but we were blown away by the expertise, treatment and knowledge of our MTA GUIDE, Manish. Additionally, our driver Prakash was professional and very efficient. Nothing was too much trouble and we have come away with a feeling of genuinely having had a true 'Indian Experience'. Thank you, MTA!

Tiger spotting on Indian safari

India Safaris

India is an incredibly diverse country for scenery and wildlife, containing steamy jungles and rain forests, large deserts, wide open plans and vast tracts of remote, unexplored mountains. In terms of safaris, India has a number of destinations that will give the enthusiastic wildlife spotter a lot to get excited about. Whilst India doesn’t have the density of large mammals on display that you can find in parts of Africa, it does have some unique species that you simply can’t see anywhere else in the world. Tourism is fairly well developed in India too, with a number of safari lodges and safari tour companies laying on “traditional” African style safari experiences, albeit with an Indian twist.

With over 360 species of mammals and 1,200 bird species, India has one of the richest biodiversity counts in the world. The signature species of India are tiger, leopard, elephant, rhino , bear, buffalo, monkey and antelope, all of which roam the central and southern plains. These animals are complemented by lions in a couple of Indian national parks in the east, where you can see lions, tigers and leopard coexisting if you’re particularly lucky on your safari! Further a field, if you fancy a mountain safari the Himalayas are home to the enigmatic snow leopard, yaks, blue sheep and the two humped camel. As such it’s no surprise that India as a wildlife spotting destination has really taken off in the past couple of decades, making it a credible alternative to a safari in Africa if you want to try something a bit different.

Despite such riches of wildlife, habitat destruction and conflict with humans is becoming an increasing problem, and one which the government is trying to tackle by creation of more protected areas and national parks. Existing national parks in India tend to be out of the way with poor infrastructure and roads to get there. Pubic transport is often not an option, though you can get to the nearest town and take a taxi or auto-rickshaw from there to the park. Most hotels near national parks will be able to arrange transfers to the park, where you’ll be able to organize a jeep tour (or elephant, boat, walking, camel etc.). Bear in mind that the price of a safari arranged at a national park are one of the few things in India that are non-negotiable, and are generally higher for non-Indian residents.

India Safari Highlights

  • Ride an elephant out into the Brahmaputra floodplains to get up close and personal with families of Indian one horned rhino in Kaziranga National Park, Assam.
  • Take a tiger safari to try and spot an elusive huge cat in one of India’s premier national parks – Bandhavgarh, Corbett, Ranthambore or Kahna.
  • Explore the swamps and wetlands of the Sundarbans National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site that’s home to the world’s largest tidal mangrove forest, a unique culture…and the Bengal tiger.

Best Time To Go On Safari In India

The best time to go on safari in India will vary according to where in the country you’re planning on going. Generally speaking India has three seasons – the hot, the monsoon and the cool, with the time each season starts and ends depending on how far north or south you are. The cool season is the most pleasant time to visit India, and starts once the monsoons finish, running from October to January. From February onward the heat starts to rise across the country, with temperatures in some places reaching 40 degrees by May. June is monsoon month, starting with high humidity and short electrical storms. These storms morph into intense daily rains with short breaks where the sun breaks through and steams the wet conditions into something akin to a turkish bath.

For safaris, the hot season offer the best wildlife viewing as water is scarce and animals congregate around water holes as vegetation dies down. The later in the hot season you can go, the better for wildlife spotting, but this needs to be balanced with the growing heat through the season.

A couple of other things to bear in mind when considering when to go on safari in India are holidays and festivals. Christmas and New Year are extremely busy times for tourism in India, with full national parks and hotels requiring reservations well in advance. And while festivals happen all the time across India, there are some – Diwali and Holi in particular – that can make for travel chaos nationwide, so do your research on which festivals are happening when and where , and plan ahead accordingly.

Safari Lodges in India

In many parts of the country India is heavily focused on tourists – both internal and inbound. Towns and villages around popular national parks tend to have the full host of safari accommodation – from$5 rooms to ulta-chic safari lodges that (occasionally) replicate the real thing in Africa. Most lodges have good restaurants on the premises, though you’ll only find decent standard western food at high-end accommodation, and even then it’s pot luck.

India Safari Tours

India caters to just about every type of tourist imaginable, and there’s a huge selection of safari tour companies that can arrange safaris locally, regionally, nationwide or even internationally (primarily into Nepal). It’s well worth shopping around and doing thorough research before committing to a particular safari tour company in India, as the quality of service varies dramatically. As a general rule you get what you pay for, and most prices can be bartered down at least 20%. Have a read of our  reviews of safari tour companies in India .

Desert Camel Safari in India

Whenever you feel like taking a desert camel safari in India, you can experience it in the north-western and northern regions of the country. These arid lands have been quite popular as holiday destinations with travellers. Large parts of Rajasthan in the north-west, and Ladakh in the northern extreme of India contain deserts.

Camel rides are amazing ways to roam the regions as these animals are adapted to extreme temperatures and tough terrains. Bobbing up and down, and swaying back and forth along with the camels will be a memorable experience. While the Thar Desert of Rajasthan has the common one-humped Dromedary camels, Ladakh is home to the rare two-humped Bactrian species.

Popular Destinations for Desert Camel Safari in India

Desert Camel safari in India can be taken in the cities of Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur in Rajasthan, and the valley of the Nubra River in the Ladakh Plateau.

1. Jodhpur: After Jaipur, which is the state capital, Jodhpur is the largest city in Rajasthan. It is sometimes called the blue city due to the colour being dominant on the exterior walls of houses.

Location: The city of Jodhpur lies in the middle of the desert in the centre of the Rajasthan state.

Attractions: Jodhpur has a lot of peculiar sites for you to see, including Kaylana Lake, Ghanta Ghar and Mehrangarh Fort. Jaswant Thada and Umaid Bhawan Palace are also worth visiting, while you are in the city.

Accessibility: You can take trains to here from Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Agra, Kanpur and Ahmedabad, whereas flights can be taken from Delhi and Mumbai.

Location: Jaisalmer is located in the western extremes of Rajasthan, and is a famous desert town of India.

Attractions: Bada Bagh, Jaisalmer Fort, Gadisar Lake, Salim Singh Ki Haveli, Khaba Fort and the Thar Heritage Museum are some of the tourist attractions here.

Climate: Dry and hot day weather conditions are prevalent in Jaisalmer due to the arid desert climate of the region. Nights get sufficiently cooler as the sand has the ability to quickly lose heat.

Accessibility: You can come to this bewitching town via trains from Delhi, Jodhpur, Kolkata and some other Indian destinations.

3. Bikaner: This little town, surrounded by smooth sand and high dunes, is another place to take a wonderful desert camel safari in India. Many resorts and hotels here feel pride in taking their guests out on such trips, and educating them about the folk culture.

Location: Bikaner lies in the north-western part of this culturally, historically and architecturally magnificent state.

Attractions: Some of the must-visit places of interest in Bikaner are Junagarh Fort, Lalgarh Palace, Laxmi Niwas Palace, Karni Mata Temple, and Ganga Singh Museum.

Climate: Summers here are scorching while winters get quite cold. Bearable day temperatures are experienced in the town between December and February.

Enjoy Camel Safari in India

4. Nubra Valley: This enchanting valley lies completely over 10000 feet above sea level, and it has towering and barren mountains.

Location: Nubra Valley is in the north-eastern part of Jammu and Kashmir, and it is part of the expansive Ladakh desert and plateau.

Attractions: This part of the country has a strong Buddhist influence, and many religious institutions here are popular attractions. The monasteries of Diskit and Ensa are good sightseeing options.

Yes, we are a very local, very small, community-based social enterprise located in Hacra Dhani in India.

Not right in a village, you will stay in purpose-built traditional huts home ‘the Jhumpa‘ in the rural desert countryside (not right in a village) more of scattered(spread out) Hamlets.

Yes please, we are happy to welcome solo travellers.

  • Riding animal we call saddle adventure. The rider needs to be confident in the saddle.
  • For camel ride, one should know few basic things before(from your host or guide) mounting on a camel.
  • For horse ride, one should know a beginner level riding experience.

Stuff you want to bring with you probably includes sunglasses, sun protection, camera (charger + adaptor), toothbrush, head torch. It quite cold from November till mid February so bring along warm clothing in layers. If you wear contact lenses it may be easier to wear glasses throughout your stay, due to dust and sand particles. Dress for comfort when going to ride a camel and wear longer, baggy shorts or non-slip loose trousers/pants. Don't mount a camel like you would a pony/horse. When the camel crouches on the ground, take permission of your camel driver before climb over his hump and into the saddle. Hold on tight to the handlebar. As he extends his backlegs first and lurches forwards you lean back, then lean forward a bit as he extends his forelegs and tips back a little.

However, fear not, for we have a solution that will satiate your cravings for desert safari in Jaipur! Just a stone’s throw away from Jaipur, you will find two incredible destinations that offer thrilling desert safaris amidst the golden sands – Pushkar and Dausa.

While Jaipur may not be blessed with its own desert, the nearby destinations of Pushkar and Dausa offer exceptional desert safari experiences that will fulfill your quest for adventure. These experiences provide a unique blend of cultural immersion, natural beauty, and adrenaline-pumping thrills.

Table of Contents

Pushkar Desert Safari:

Move a little further from the Pink City, and you’ll find yourself in the captivating oasis of Pushkar . Known for its sacred lake, ancient temples, and vibrant festivals, Pushkar also beckons adventurers with its enthralling desert safari experience.  Nestled approximately 150 kilometers west of Jaipur, the holy town of Pushkar has more to offer than meets the eye. Venture beyond the bustling streets and immerse yourself in an enchanting desert safari experience.

Place to visit Pushkar

Whether you are an adrenaline junkie seeking exhilarating rides across the undulating dunes or a nature lover yearning for a tranquil escape amidst the desert flora and fauna, pushkar desert safari has something for everyone. So buckle up and venture into the heart of the desert through the mystical sands.

Prime attraction

Pushkar offers a unique opportunity to embark on a desert safari adventure that combines the tranquility of the desert landscape with the charm of this holy city. Dausa Desert Safari:

For those seeking a more offbeat desert experience, head towards Dausa , located about 60 kilometers northeast of Jaipur. Known for its rich history and ancient forts, Dausa is the nearest desert from Jaipur and also offers a thrilling desert safari escapade. While Dausa itself is not a popular tourist destination for desert safaris compared to other cities like Jaisalmer or Bikaner, it does have options for desert experiences that you can explore.

One of the notable attractions in Dausa is the Talab-E-Shahi, a historical lake surrounded by sandy dunes. Visitors can enjoy camel rides and explore the scenic surroundings of the lake. Additionally, you may also find local tour operators or resorts in the area that offer desert safari experiences. Hop on a sturdy jeep or ride a camel as your expert guide navigates through the undulating sand dunes of Dausa.

It’s worth mentioning that due to Dausa’s lesser-known status as a desert safari destination, the options and infrastructure for desert safaris may not be as developed or extensive compared to cities like Jaisalmer. However, if you’re in the vicinity and looking for a unique desert experience, Dausa can offer a more offbeat and serene environment for a desert safari.

village life at Dausa

Feel the rush of adrenaline as you ride to the deepest points of the villages at Dausa. As you explore this hidden gem, keep your camera ready to capture the raw beauty of the arid terrain, mud tracks, the vast fields, mud houses and the glimpses of local wildlife that call this desert their home. Witness the amazing wildlife like tigers, leopard, striped Hyena, Golden Jackal, Chital, Sambhar, Blue Bull, Chinkara and Four Horned antelope.

Embark in an exciting desert safari and ride through the sand dunes and feel the wind whipping through your hair and the desert landscape unfolds before your eyes. Make your evening special by witnessing the wonderful sunset. Remember to pause, take a deep breath, and marvel at the silence and vastness that surrounds you.

We are interested in wildlife, cultural experiences, culture, lifestyle, wildlife, mountains, spiritual yoga meditation. We don’t plan to focus on museums and history.

If you have references for a small group tour operator and lodges that would be helpful.

// If you have references for a small group tour operator //

Most travellers who post on this forum are independent travellers, not participants in group tours, so your responses may be limited.

You won’t find an Indian operator in that market. If you want a small group tour you need to look in your own country.

Ideally, speak with a bricks and mortar travel agent near you.

Desktop research on providers such as Intrepid; G-Adventures; Abercrombie and Kent;

Alternatively a website like Tour Radar might be a good starting point for you.
