Bad Bunny enlists girlfriend to announce first-ever stadium tour, teases fans with new album

rapper world tours 2022

"El Último Tour Del Mundo 2022" , aka the Last World Tour 2022, isn't the last fans will see of Bad Bunny . The Puerto Rican reggaeton artist will continue traveling the world for his first-ever stadium tour.

Bad Bunny announced his upcoming "World's Hottest Tour" on Monday in an Instagram reel featuring himself, girlfriend Gabriela Berlingeri and Spanish actor Mario Casas in a tropical setting.

"I was wondering … what if I announce my next tour?" the emcee said in Spanish, before teasing a new album release later this year.

In the caption, Bad Bunny wrote in Spanish, "now, 2022 has begun."

The 29-city "World's Hottest Tour," which spans the United States and Latin America, kicks off Aug. 5 in Orlando, Florida, and will visit major cities including Boston, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, making stops in iconic venues like Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium and SoFi Stadium.

The Latin American leg of the tour kicks off Oct. 21 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and will visit cities including Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lima, Peru; Panama City; and Mexico City.

DJs Alesso and Diplo will join Bad Bunny on select U.S. dates.

Bad Bunny's Monday tour announcement follows the overwhelmingly positive reception of his "El Último Tour Del Mundo" indoor arena tour, which kicks off in February.

The 27-year-old star sold out all 35 shows of the tour, moving more than 500,000 tickets, and broke the Ticketmaster record for the most ticket sales for a tour on its first day of sales since 2018, according to a press release.

The reggaetonero also broke audience records with his first stadium concerts last December, performing at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Puerto Rico. "This announcement is a clear representation of Bad Bunny’s extraordinary growth as a global superstar," the release read.

Bad Bunny has become a household name since the 2018 release of his debut album "X 100pre." In 2020, Bad Bunny released two more studio albums, "YHLQMDLG" and "Bad Bunny El Último Tour Del Mundo."

The "Dákiti" rapper has been ranked as the No. 1 Latin artist in the U.S. by Billboard for the third year in a row and has scored the most top 10 hits on the Hot Latin Songs chart.

Tickets for the "World's Hottest Tour"  will be available for pre-sale Wednesday , while the general public can purchase tickets beginning Friday on Live Nation.

Most Anticipated Tours Of 2022

The Most Anticipated Tours Of 2022

UPROXX Music

While we got a taste of it in the latter half of 2021 , it’s now been several years since there was a normal touring year. And though 2022’s touring schedule is hardly set in stone for most musicians, it should see many artists doing their best to provide live entertainment to fans across the country. From stadium tours to clubs, these are just some of the artists we’re most excited to see, with more to be announced as the year goes by. Check out the most anticipated tours of 2022 below.

Bad Bunny 2021 P FKN R concert

Not only was Bad Bunny 2021’s most streamed artist in the world on Spotify , but the Puerto Rican star’s 2022 El Último Tour Del Mundo (translation: The Last Tour on Earth) smashed a number of sales records as soon as it was announced. When the pre-sale for the tour began in April, over 480,000 tickets were sold in less than a week. On April 15th alone, he sold more tickets on a single day than any tour since Jay-Z and Beyoncé in 2018. All stats and trivia aside, the reggaeton rapper is one of the biggest acts in the world and his on-stage persona reflects that. Look no further than the hyper-futurism of his performance on “Lo Siento BB:/” with Tainy and Julietta Venegas at the AMAs.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Big Thief (@bigthiefmusic)

With their fifth album coming soon, 2022 is shaping up to be the year of Big Thief. The band’s hotly-anticipated, impressively massive 20-song effort Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You is out in February, and they have quite a slate of tour dates on the books in support. Starting in late January, the quartet will bring their expanding, experimental Americana sound to life on a run that’s equally as ambitious as their new album, spanning nearly six months (with some breaks) and hitting cities across Europe and the US.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bon Iver (@boniver)

Bon Iver put on some concerts last year to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Bon Iver, Bon Iver , but if you missed out on those, Justin Vernon and company are hitting the road this year . During the first half of 2022, they’ll travel across North America, then closer to the end of the year, fans in Europe and the UK will get the chance to see the show, too. How great can you expect it to be? Well, if you ask Uproxx’s Philip Cosores, he’ll tell you that Bon Iver “ might be the best live band in the world right now .”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Claire Cottrill (@clairo)

After finding success within the bedroom pop genre on her 2019 debut album Immunity , Clairo made a decisive pivot to mesmerizing piano ballads inspired by iconic ’70s songwriters like Joni Mitchell on her 2021 album Sling . The shift in sound is thanks to Clairo’s new role as caretaker for her adorable dog Joanie (also inspired by Mitchell), which made her fantasize a life of rural domesticity. But her new direction of music also means she’ll take on a whole new stage presence for her 2022 tour. Bringing along breakout UK songwriter Arlo Parks as an opener, Clairo is set to embark on two-month US tour which kicks off in mid-February in Charlotte, North Carolina and comes to a close in April with a tour stop in Atlanta.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Coldplay (@coldplay)

When it came time to promote Everyday Life in 2019, Coldplay didn’t tour and vowed not to again until they made great strides in turning their global treks into more environmentally friendly affairs. Well, it appears they’ve made some progress, as they are indeed set to tour in support of 2021’s Music Of The Spheres between March and August after spending “two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward.”

Cordae’s got some mighty big shoes to fill in 2022 — his own. After scoring two Grammy nominations with his debut album, The Lost Boy , the Maryland rapper is gearing up to release its long-awaited follow-up From A Bird’s Eye View . That means a tour to support the new project , which kicks off in February at the Dallas House Of Blues. Given his focus on demonstrating a couple of years’ worth of artistic growth on that album, it makes sense to expect some similar evolution in his live show, which was already a polished, must-see package.

doja-cat-grid.jpeg

Doja Cat’s 2020 was sensational, but it came with an asterisk: A global pandemic shut down her ability to tour with the songs that blew her up on the national stage , leaving her frustrated by a succession of seemingly empty televised performances of her No. 1 hit “ Say So .” While she said that she was worn down from being overworked doing everything but music, good news is on the horizon, as 2022 will see the return of live shows and the opportunity to finally perform her Planet Her hits for an appreciative, live audience. – A.W.

drake-grid.jpeg

So, Drake’s set on Kanye’s Free Larry Hoover concert in LA was a little disappointing, but only in the context of his co-headliner reviving all of his own hits as a sort of mea culpa for the last five years of bluster and nonsense. Drake, who opted to play solely Certified Lover Boy singles — aside from a quick hit of “God’s Plan” from Scorpion — wound up giving something like a preview or dry run of what a Certified Lover Boy tour might look like. He hasn’t announced one yet but given his gift for recalibration in light of Twitter’s responses to his work , it appears probable he’ll be incorporating those critiques for whenever he actually does. – A.W.

@DUALIPA on Future Nostalgia Tour in UK & Europe, US, Australia & NZ, and Latin America in this year! Where do you see Dua on the stage? 👀 pic.twitter.com/AfplUnBG38 — Future Nostalgia Tour (@dualipafntour) January 3, 2022

Dua Lipa’s shimmering disco-pop album Future Nostalgia was written to be heard in nightclubs everywhere, but that didn’t quite go according to plan thanks to the pandemic. Now armed with several top-charting singles , a new album of revved-up remixes , and a number of showstopping Future Nostalgia livestream performances, Lipa is gearing up to bring her 2020 album to stages across the world in 2022. Bringing along Megan Thee Stallion and Caroline Polachek to set the tone for her concerts as openers, Lipa is plotting a two-month US tour starting in Miami in early February and closing out in Seattle in March.

Haim’s stellar album Women In Music Pt. III may have been released in 2020, but the sister trio are just now gearing up to embark on their supporting tour thanks to years of unpredictability in the live music industry. If Haim’s revved up 2021 Grammy performance was any indication, the band’s WIMPIII tour will be well worth the wait. While Haim have already played a handful of festivals this past year, their official tour kicks off in April in Las Vegas before coming to a close in late July in San Diego.

Jack White has been busy. The former White Stripe has two new albums slated for release in 2022 — Fear Of The Dawn is due April 8 and then Entering Heaven Alive drops a few months later, on July 22 — and he’s wasting no time getting on the road. The cleverly-titled “Supply Chain Issues Tour” kicks off on Fear Of The Dawn ‘s release day in White’s hometown of Detroit and hits large theaters and arenas across the US and Europe through late August. Just don’t expect any cell phone footage from these shows, because your phone’s getting locked up!

Jazmine Sullivan

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jazmine Sullivan (@jazminesullivan)

Jazmine Sullivan began 2021 with her Heaux Tales EP, her first body of work in almost six years. Its 11 tracks and guest appearances from Ari Lennox , HER , and Anderson .Paak amounted to a project that R&B lovers praised and carried close to their hearts for the rest of the year. Sullivan received awards, love, and more as a result of Heaux Tales , and in response, she’s heading out on the road in 2022 for a tour in support of the project. The Heaux Tales tour begins in mid-February with Sullivan performing in a number of major cities across North America for a total of 26 shows.

Justin Bieber

bieber.jpg

Fans of Justin Bieber are in for quite the treat this year. After two failed attempts to hold a tour for his fifth album Changes , and the eventual release of his sixth full-length effort Justice , Bieber will hit the road for a massive world tour in 2022. It marks his first tour since 2016’s Purpose World Tour. Altogether, the Justice World Tour is comprised of 105 shows in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania while Jaden, ¿Téo?, Eddie Benjamin, and Harry Hudson will serve as opening acts.

Kacey Musgraves

A few months after releasing her 2021 standout Star-Crossed , the ( maybe-not-so-country ) star is just days away from getting to tour behind it . Her trek kicks off in January and runs for about a month (so far), hitting major markets like LA, New York, and Nashville along the way. If seeing just Musgraves perform somehow isn’t exciting enough of a prospect, she’s bringing a tremendous pair of openers, King Princess and Muna, along for the ride.

The Killers

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Killers (@thekillers)

Since The Killers couldn’t tour in support of 2020’s Imploding The Mirage , they went ahead and made another album, Pressure Machine , instead. That one will get a tour, as the band is set to hit the road in the latter half of 2022, hitting North America this summer and fall, between August and October. For a preview of what those shows might look like (or at least a reminder of what a force the band is live), revisit their Tonight Show performances of “Dying Breed” and “When You Were Young” from a few months ago.

Like many of her peers who also saw their public profile rise drastically in 2020, Latto found herself hamstrung by her inability to get out into the world and play her Queen Of Da Souf records live. The Uproxx cover artist had a succession of fan-favorite singles over the past two years, but the corona happened. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, though, affording her enough off time to effect her name change , and with her headlining set on the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour , she’ll be able to test the waters without assuming as much of the risk.

Little Simz

https://www.instagram.com/p/CU-f95ooHAI/

Little Simz could be currently in the midst of a one-woman British Invasion thanks to her Best of 2021 album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert — the only thing missing is a North American tour . While she almost certainly won’t draw the levels of mass hysteria implied by that prediction, she will have a chance to reinforce her grip on Stateside pop culture, which could ensure that when she returns for a follow-up to SIMBI , there’ll be much more well-deserved fanfare.

lorde-feat.jpg

Lorde may be one of today’s biggest pop stars, but she only emerges into the public eye when she’s releasing new music. That’s why fans were overjoyed Lorde officially began her Solar Power era last year, which included the announcement of a massive 2022 tour. Though actually securing tickets to her 58-date 2022 world tour before it sold out was difficult to say the least , those who are able to attend the singer’s tour are in for a treat. Bringing along openers like Remi Wolf and Marlon Williams, Lorde will kick off her tour by playing shows through major cities in the US starting February 26 before heading over to Europe in May and returning to her New Zealand homeland in 2023.

My Chemical Romance

View this post on Instagram A post shared by My Chemical Romance (@mychemicalromance)

My Chemical Romance played exactly one show on their sold-out reunion tour all the way back in December of 2019, seemingly eons before the world shut down. Their return to the stage was originally scheduled for Riot Fest 2021, but the band ultimately pushed their headlining appearance back one year during a spike in COVID cases last summer. Now, finally, all of the dates have been rescheduled and the band is set to hit the road in the UK and Europe in May of 2022 before returning to the United States next summer. Fingers crossed it actually sticks this time.

Olivia Rodrigo

In 2021, Olivia Rodrigo went from Disney channel lead to certified pop star. She took the world by storm, earned several Grammy nominations , various awards, and even the chance to meet with President Biden without ever having gone on tour. But that’s all about to change this year as the singer is set to embark on her first-ever US and European tour in support of her smash-hit album Sour . Rodrigo’s ( already sold-out ) 47-date tour kicks off in San Francisco in April before heading to Europe in June and coming to a close in London in July.

There’s a generation of indie rock fans that hasn’t had the opportunity to see Pavement live, as the legendary group last toured in 2010. Now, though, Stephen Malkmus, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, and the rest have a reunion tour on the docket for 2022. The North American leg of the tour kicks off in September, and while that’s a few months away, that wait is nothing compared to the past 12 years fans have spent hoping that this day would actually come.

Rage Against The Machine / Run The Jewels

One of the most anticipated runs of 2020, “ The Public Service Announcement Tour ” was set to feature the reunion of Rage Against The Machine — the modern era’s most revolutionary rock band — with support from Run The Jewels — the most outspoken rap duo on the scene. But, just like everything else, we had to wait an additional two years to see Rage Against The Machine return to the stage this spring for their oft-rumored reunion tour. The new set of dates kick off in Texas in March and features a number of North American stops before wrapping up with a week of shows at Madison Square Garden in August.

Sharon Van Etten / Angel Olsen / Julien Baker

Back in 2018, we got to see some of the most promising artists in indie rock — Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus — team up for the Boygenius tour. Now, Baker is set to team up with more indie rock royalty on “ The Wild Hearts Tour ,” which will find her sharing the stage with Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen. The monthlong, mostly outdoor jaunt kicks off in July in Virginia and treks across the entire continental US before wrapping in New York City at the Central Park Summerstage in late August.

Snoh Aalegra

Two years after her beloved second album Ugh, Those Feels Again , Snoh Aalegra returned to the summer of 2021 with her third project Temporary Highs In The Violet Skies . With help from Tyler The Creator, Pharrell Williams, and James Fauntleroy, Snoh Aalegra created a project that was sonically different when compared to her first two albums. This will make for a unique live show experience, at least on her terms, that fans will see when she hits the road for the Temporary Highs Tour later this year. Snoh will perform at 21 shows across North America with British singer Ama Lou serving as her opening act for the string of concerts.

Tyler The Creator

Call Me If You Get Lost is officially one of the biggest albums of the year, and Tyler’s tour supporting it will almost certainly be one of the year’s must-sees. He’s already proven to be one of the top performers in hip-hop, giving aesthetic overhauls to his looks between album cycles and incorporating those changes into his innovative, thoughtful live shows. And, since he’s also bringing along fellow 2021 standout Vince Staples and the bafflingly intriguing Teezo Touchdown , as well as Kali Uchis , it’ll be worth catching his concerts from beginning to end.

The War On Drugs

The War On Drugs’ latest effort, I Don’t Live Here Anymore , was one of 2021’s best albums , putting on full display the band’s power and promise as they elevate to festival and arena headlining status. Kicking off in January, the group’s hefty tour takes them through some of the most prestigious theaters in the continental United States and Europe. The routing also includes an anticipated stop at Madison Square Garden, where they will really put their lofty, emotional guitar solos to the test.

Good things come to those who wait. It’s a saying that fans of The Weeknd are certainly feeling days into 2021. The singer just released his sixth album Dawn FM , now giving his supporters not one, but two albums worth of music to see The Weeknd perform live. This summer, The Weeknd will take over stadiums all over the country for the After Hours Til Dawn world tour. It will commence after multiple attempts, many hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic, from The Weeknd to tour in support of his 2020 album After Hours . Two years after that album’s release, attendees will be able to experience what will surely be an amazing show curated by the singer himself in support of his most recent bodies of work.

Stay tuned for the full dates for the After Hours Til Dawn world tour. – W.O.

Yves Tumor Outside Lands 2021

In 2020, Yves Tumor’s fourth album Heaven To A Tortured Mind introduced the artist to a wider audience, opening the door to critical acclaim and a breakout year for the experimental musician. Tumor was able to capitalize on that buzz in 2021 with the EP The Asymptotical World , but thanks to various variants, wasn’t able to organize a full global tour behind either release until very recently when they announced a nearly 50-city world tour encompassing Europe, the UK, and United States. –

The tours we’re most excited to see in 2022

Assuming it's safe when these acts head out on tour, we're most excited to see musicians like pavement, tyler, the creator, big thief, and more.

Clockwise from left: Snail Mail (Screenshot), Olivia Rodrigo (Photo: Getty Images/Mat Hayward), Tyler, The Creator (Photo: Getty Images/Rich Fury), Pavement (Photo: Courtesy artist)

It really seemed like things were on the right path, didn’t it? Sure, we were all still wearing masks in the bars, clubs, and theaters. At least, when we weren’t furtively pulling them down to take a quick swig of beer, or glaring at the inconsiderate asshats who kept their masks permanently under their chins while packed in close quarters in front of the stage. But shows were back! We could finally see our favorite musicians once more plying their trade for appreciative crowds.

And then: omicron. One step forward, one giant round Greek letter back. By the time you read these words, the surge from this latest variant may have subsided. But for now, there’s a tough moral calculus at work in deciding to go see a live band or artist. Staying safe should be everyone’s top priority—and logic dictates that means staying home again, for now anyway—but for a lot of musicians, touring is their livelihood. And many are locked into tours they can’t afford not to continue. So you have to balance wanting to support artists with wanting to do your part to keep COVID in check. If you do go, please abide by the strictest of COVID protocols.

But this wave won’t last forever. And there are a bunch of great artists hitting the road in 2022, ready to remind you of the (clichéd but true) power of live music. Here is a partial list of the acts we’re most excited to see in coming months; we’d include every band we want to check out, but a list 200 names long is pretty unwieldy. So consider this our must-see checklist; feel free to add your own unmissable acts in the comments. Hopefully, we’ll all be out soon, safely head-banging the night away.

Note to desktop users: If you’d like to read this in a scrolling format (and why wouldn’t you?), simply narrow your browser window.

Tyler, The Creator

Tyler, The Creator

The man responsible for the fourth-best album of 2021 is hitting the road, bringing the eclectic beauty of Call Me If You Get Lost to giant venues that he’ll doubtless make feel like sweaty nightclubs before the evening is over. On February 10, Tyler, The Creator will kick off the North American leg of the tour, where he’ll be joined by opening acts Kali Uchis, Vince Staples, and Teezo Touchdown. [Tickets available here .]

Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo

Speaking of artists who made our best albums of 2021 list , Olivia Rodrigo is also finally heading out in support of her massively successful debut record, SOUR . Unfortunately, the tour sold out almost instantly, so you’ll have to get creative if you want to see the “Drivers License” singer live. May we suggest scouring your local Twitter feed the day of, in order to see if anyone’s holding an extra ticket? [Tour dates here .]

Pavement

Okay, this one’s significant: It’s been 10 years since Pavement last went on tour, so this is not just a rare reunion—it’s one of the “who knows if you’ll ever get to see them again” situations. In September and October, they’ll be traveling across the U.S., before venturing off to Europe. The landmark indie-rock outfit is hitting most major cities in America, so hopefully even if you live in a rural area, you’re not far away from getting to hear “ We Dance ” in person. [Tour dates here .]

Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief

Big Thief’s upcoming release, the mouthful of a double LP Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You , isn’t due for another month, but the band is already gearing up for a massive tour. After spending February and March in Europe, it’ll return to the States for April and May, to ply its distinctive version of intimate Americana. (Though new singles like “ Time Escaping ” suggest an expanded musical palette this time out.) [Tour dates here .]

Snail Mail

If you’re noticing a certain amount of overlap with our best albums of 2021 list , well, that’s hardly surprising. Who wouldn’t want to see the people responsible for some of the best music of the previous year? That certainly includes Lindsey Jordan, a.k.a. Snail Mail, and her band, as they hit the road beginning in April for a world tour. Honestly, we’re just happy to be able to catch the group live—in November 2021, Jordan was forced to cancel the first two legs of her Valentine tour due to surgery to remove some vocal polyps. [Tour dates here .]

Earl Sweatshirt and Action Bronson

Earl Sweatshirt (Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images) and Action Bronson (Photo: Earl Gibson III/Getty Images)

Longtime friends and collaborators Earl Sweatshirt and Action Bronson decided to make touring a family affair of sorts in 2022. The pair has planned a co-headlining tour starting in late January and wrapping in early March. They’ll be joined by The Alchemist and Boldy James—though for us, the real draw will be the chance to hear Earl spit verses from his upcoming album, SICK , due out January 14. [Tour dates here .]

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish

If you think we’re immune to the draw of one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, you are sorely mistaken. Spectacle is spectacle, and we’re as curious as anyone to see what Eilish puts together for her massive Happier Than Ever tour. (Also, the new record is really good, which always helps.) Barring any COVID-related delays, Eilish is going on the road starting in February, before jumping across the pond in June. [Tour dates here .]

Bon Iver

We’ve been waiting for another opportunity to see Justin Vernon take Bon Iver on the road, and 2022 finally looks like that chance. Starting at the end of March and wending its way sporadically through the rest of the year, the tour will find Vernon and company hitting up the U.S. and Europe, though we’re mostly curious to see if a legion of Swifties will be in attendance, thanks to the musician’s presence on both folklore and evermore . [Tour dates here .]

HAIM

We may have recently gotten an up-close look at Alana Haim—and her sisters—in the recent Paul Thomas Anderson film Licorice Pizza (one of The A.V. Club ’s best films of 2021 ), but we’re still excited to see the trio getting back onstage in 2022. This is the first chance to see HAIM tour the music from 2020’s excellent Women In Music Pt. III , and the sisters are bringing some great opening acts along with them, including Faye Webster , Sasami, Waxahatchee , Buzzy Lee, and Princess Nokia. [Tour dates here .]

Yves Tumor

If you have yet to discover the inspired genre-mashup perversity of Yves Tumor, then perhaps the artist’s 2022 tour is the opportunity you’ve needed. Heaven To A Tortured Mind was one of our favorite records of 2020 , an electro-pop-groove masterwork that never stopped mining different sounds and styles for inspiration. Tumor is no stranger to fascinating reinventions, and this tour—with its attendant oddball ’90s-inspired promo video —promises to be as fantastic as Tumor’s music. [Tour dates here .]

Arooj Aftab

Arooj Aftab

Arooj Aftab’s latest album, Vulture Prince , was one of our favorites last year. The Brooklyn-based Pakistani composer fuses elements of traditional Pakistani music, jazz, classical, and more into a remarkably cohesive and singular style. Seeing her live will likely be even more entrancing than her recorded works—if we had to pick one artist above all to really endorse on this list of tours, Aftab might just be it. [Tour dates here .]

Sleaford Mods

Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods

If it’s a raucous dance party you’re looking for, Sleaford Mods have got you covered. Combining post-punk guitars with groovy drum machines and glitchy synth squawks, the duo has made a career of dark, pounding electro-punk in the early-aughts vein. The British act is hitting its home continent first, but will arrive on U.S. shores in late April for a month of doubtless high-energy shows—the kind where the skinny-jeans-wearing kids near you might actually bust out some moves instead of standing still with crossed arms. [Tour dates here .]

Current Joys

Nick Rattigan, a.k.a. Current Joys

The 2021 album Voyager marked a noticeable uptick in both urgency and tempo from Nick Rattigan’s Current Joys. So naturally, we’re excited to find out how those higher-energy tunes translate into the live setting. Rattigan and company will set out in the back half of January, criss-crossing the U.S. before heading to Europe. Feeling bad rarely feels this good. [Tour dates here .]

Saba

Rapper Saba has been a longtime A.V. Club favorite, and not just because the artist shares our hometown base of Chicago—both the location and Midwestern sensibility are deep in the DNA of the site. It’s also simply because he continues to be one of the most thoughtful and engaging emcees out there, so we’ll never miss a chance to catch Saba on tour. This one starts out in Europe on March 1, before landing back in the States for a two-month stretch throughout April and May. [Tour dates here .]

Rapper Toomaj Salehi became an icon in Iran. It could cost him his life.

A rare and unapologetic voice of defiance inside Iran, rapper Toomaj Salehi has been sentenced to death for his support of the anti-government uprising in 2022.

rapper world tours 2022

In the video posted to Telegram, a banner emblazoned with the face of rapper Toomaj Salehi hangs from a highway overpass in Tehran.

“Forced officer, forced executioner, one who just follows orders, go find a rat hole,” says a woman off camera , quoting lyrics from Salehi’s 2021 breakout hit.

On April 24, the day before the video was shared online, Salehi was sentenced to death on charges of “spreading corruption on the Earth” in connection with his support for the anti-government uprising that erupted in the fall of 2022. A rare and unapologetic voice of defiance inside Iran, Salehi was an inspiration for the protest movement, and among the most high-profile figures to be caught up in the state’s brutal crackdown.

International reaction to his death sentence was swift, with the United Nations, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan and the Recording Academy all putting out statements of support. Analysts said the draconian twist in Salehi’s case was a sign of his far-reaching cultural impact.

Iran’s leaders view Salehi as “a national security threat,” said Holly Dagres, a senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Middle East programs who spoke to Toomaj as a part of her research on Gen Z Iranians. She described his music as “a sword” that “tears at the very fabric of the clerical establishment.”

Salehi first went viral in September 2021 with “Rat Hole,” a song that openly challenged the Islamic Republic and its authoritarian rule.

“If you play in the middle and ask, ‘What is politics?’/ Know that we don’t have a vote to abstain./ Nobody can be neutral in this battle,” he rapped.

He quickly attracted attention, both from new fans and from the country’s security apparatus, which arrested him just days after the song’s release. But he was released on bail soon after and refused to stay quiet. He continued to put out music under his name and videos that showed his face, often from undisclosed locations within the country.

“No musician has been as bold and outspoken as him. … Even people with safety outside of the country,” said Nahid Siamdoust, an assistant professor in media and Middle East studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

Salehi was born and raised in Isfahan to Bakhtiari parents, an ethnic minority in Iran’s southwest. He was introduced to rap music by his brother at a young age, he has said, and cited Tupac Shakur as an early influence.

Negin Niknaam, one of his closest confidants, who manages his social media accounts from Germany, said he has also loved martial arts and boxing since childhood.

“That’s why I think he became interested in rap, because it’s also very direct,” she added.

Salehi came from a family of activists. His father was a political prisoner who spent eight years behind bars, one of thousands of leftists rounded up in the 1980s as the revolutionary government took control of the country.

In Iran, where rap is illegal, the “rap-e farsi” genre began to take shape in the 1990s. But the scene still exists entirely underground, making it difficult for artists to survive financially off their music.

“This is a man who’s sold his personal items, even his motorcycle, to produce music,” Dagres said. “It’s a real testament to his passion — not just for the genre itself, but also his love for Iran as a country.”

From the start, Salehi’s music was overtly political, tackling women’s rights , government corruption , the economy and child labor .

The “foregrounding of regime change discourse” in “Rat Hole” helped shift the conversation inside Iran, and ultimately became the core demand of the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, Siamdoust said.

Navid, a Tehran resident who took part in the protests, said that Salehi set himself apart from the rest of the underground rap scene by going toe-to-toe with Iran’s leaders.

“It’s as if he’s poking the dictator directly in the eye and saying, ‘No matter what you do, I’ll continue on my path. Whatever happens to me, I’ll keep going,’” he said, speaking on the condition that he be identified by his first name for fear of reprisals.

When the women-led uprising began in September 2022 after the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the “morality police,” Salehi addressed the budding movement with two songs.

“Woman, life, freedom, we will fight to the death/ Shoulder to shoulder like a defensive wall/ I believe in solidarity like divine faith,” he rapped on “Battlefield,” released in early October of that year.

Later that month, Salehi released “ Divination ,” squarely speaking to the morality police: “Someone’s crime was her hair dancing in the wind,” one verse went.

Six days after the release of “Divination,” Iran’s state broadcaster announced that Salehi had been arrested, and a state propaganda campaign kicked into gear. The judiciary’s official media outlet released a video accusing him of “planning and organizing” demonstrations with “diaspora leaders,” including an image of Salehi blindfolded in a vehicle.

On Nov. 2, 2022, Salehi appeared in a video blindfolded and with a swollen face as he apologized for encouraging security forces to abandon their posts. Another forced apology video was released that December, showing Salehi speaking to someone who resembles an interrogator; the camera angles appeared to mimic those from his music video for “Divination.”

After more than a year behind bars, Salehi was released on bail in late 2023. Days later, he posted a video to his YouTube account in which he explained his forced confessions and alleged that he had been tortured.

“They broke my arms and my legs. They were hitting my face and my head, so at first I tried to cover myself with my hands, and they broke my fingers,” Salehi said.

He was arrested again less than two weeks later for “publishing lies and disturbing the public mind after publishing some false and undocumented comments online,” the judiciary’s media outlet reported.

When Salehi’s case was appealed to the Supreme Court, it called on the lower court to drop some of the charges against him. But a revolutionary court, part of Iran’s parallel justice system , reassumed jurisdiction and sentenced him to death — an “unprecedented move,” according to his lawyer, Amir Raeisian.

Niknaam spoke with Salehi days after his death sentence was made public. She said he was most concerned that people who took to the streets to protest his sentence might be arrested. Salehi’s phone privileges have since been taken away and she has not been able to speak with him again.

“Toomaj is becoming a national hero,” said Navid, the Tehran protester. He explained how at a protest organized by pensioners in southwestern Khuzestan province on April 28, there were calls to “free Toomaj” amid chants about wages.

“I’m thrilled to see that aside from political and human rights activists speaking out against the regime, a rapper is continuing this fight,” he said.

On Wednesday, one of Salehi’s closest friends and collaborators, the rapper Afrasiab, released a freestyle from inside Iran.

“Enforcing this sentence is the biggest mistake of the century,” said Afrasiab, rapping to the camera with his face in full view.

“Toomaj is not just one person. He’s a nation that won’t be chained down.”
