What to Do at the Airport [Step by Step Guide]

If you don’t have a lot of experience with traveling through airports, you might be wondering how to successfully navigate through the airport problem free.

In this guide I’ll give you a step by step approach you can take so that you don’t have any mishaps.

I’ll simplify everything to make it as easy to remember as possible but you also may want to bookmark this article for easy access.

Table of Contents

Pre-airport steps

While this article will focus on what to do when you arrive at the airport, I’d be remiss if I did not mention a couple of things you need to do before you show up at the airport.

Confirm flight details

Before you ever get to the airport, you should confirm your flight details to make sure your flight date and time are correct.

I hate to admit it but in my early travel days I once missed a flight because I thought I had booked it for a day later. Had I simply checked my flight 48 to 72 hours before my trip I would’ve caught the mistake.

If you are new to traveling then this should be one of the top priorities a few days before your flight!

You should be able to check in online through the airline’s website or through their app before you ever step foot in the airport. This will open up 24 hours before your flight in most cases.

Checking in is helpful because it can save you time when you arrive at the airport but it could also be helpful for other reasons . For example, did you know that it can decrease the odds of you getting bumped from your flight?

Don’t bring things that are not allowed

As you are packing for your trip, make sure that you are not bringing along prohibited items that could get you hung up going through airport security.

On UponArriving, we have written extensively about all the different types of objects allowed and not allowed on planes. So you can do a search on our blog to see if you can find anything relevant to an object you want to bring.

The TSA website is also a great resource as well but they don’t always go into a lot of detail so it’s always good to supplement your knowledge with a detailed blog post.

Have your documents with you

In order to fly around the US you’ll need to have an ID recognized by TSA. For most people, this is a driver’s license although in 2025 this will have to be a REAL ID compliant ID.

If you are flying internationally, then you will want to make sure that you also have your passport.

Okay, so those are all the steps you need to do just before your flight and now let’s focus on what to do when you arrive at the airport.

Step 1: Arrive to the airport at the right time

You want to make sure that you are arriving at the airport at the correct time. The general rule of thumb is to arrive two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.

However, those time recommendations can be divided in half for some people , depending on the route, the airport, etc. If you don’t have a lot of experience with traveling then it’s best to play it conservatively.

But don’t get there too early if you have a really early flight because you might be sitting around for a while with no facilities open!

Step 2: Arrive at the right departures terminal

First, make sure you are getting dropped off or that you find parking in the correct departure section.

It may sound silly but some people get mixed up on the difference between arrivals and departures.

Because they are “arriving” at the airport they think that they need to head to arrivals but you will want to head to departures. (In the end, this doesn’t always make a huge difference because you can just take an elevator to go from one to the other but it can complicate things like parking.)

When arriving at the airport your goal is to find the terminal you are departing from and then find the section of the terminal serving your airline.

Finding the terminal you are departing from is usually easy because you can just look at your boarding pass. If you don’t have that information, you can look it up on the airline’s website or look for signs when you arrive at the airport. That’s because certain terminals will be designated to specific airlines.

Next, if you’re dealing with a terminal that serves multiple airlines you want to find the section of the terminal that is serving your specific airline. Again, just look for the signs.

If you are getting dropped off by an Uber driver or Taxi, let them know what airline you are flying on and they should take you right to that section of the terminal.

Step 3: Head to a check in/baggage counter if needed

If you already checked in on your mobile device you don’t need to go to any check-in desk unless you have bags to check.

(If you do need to check in then you can probably do that at a kiosk or you can go speak with an agent at a check-in desk.)

If you have bags to check then the first thing you want to do is to weigh your bags.

A lot of airports now set up special weigh stations so that you can make sure your baggage is underneath the weight requirements. This would typically be 40 to 50 pounds for a standard economy ticket . If your bag is over that amount then you want to re-shuffle some contents and try to put them into your carry-on bag.

Once you know that your bags are under the weight limits you will have to make your way to the baggage counter.

There will usually be two lines at these check-in/baggage areas. One line will be for non-elite members and also for economy passengers. Most likely, this will be the longest line.

There will also be a separate line for elite passengers and for people flying in business class or first class. So make sure that you join the proper line based on your ticket and elite status.

Step 4: Prepare for security

It’s always helpful to prepare for security before you step foot in the line.

That’s because you would otherwise be forced to get ready in a hurry or to remove items as you are trying to pull your luggage along.

So before you even head over to the security line consider doing the following:

  • Remove watches, belts, or anything else that could set off the metal detector
  • Place your electronics like your phone in a compartment in your bag
  • Empty out anything in your pockets and place them in your bag
  • Have your ID and boarding pass in your hand

Step 5: Head to the right security line

As soon as your bags are checked and you have your boarding pass, you are ready to go through airport security.

But you should take a few seconds to make sure that you are choosing the right security line . I constantly see people entering the wrong line and then slowing things down so don’t overlook this step!

Here are the different lines you may see:

  • Elite status line: Only for passengers with elite status or flying first/business
  • TSA Pre-Check : Expedited screening line only for Pre-Check members
  • CLEAR: Allows you to skip the line; only for registered members.

If you don’t have any special membership then you will just head to the general security line which once again will probably be the longest line.

Step 6: Make your way through security

When you arrive at the security line you will show your ID and boarding pass and then it will be time to go through the security checkpoint.

When going through the standard security line, you will have to remove:

  • Light jackets
  • Liquids ( 3-1-1 Rule )

When you remove these items you will place them on a tray and then make sure that you push that tray onto the conveyor belt before you walk through the full body scanner or walk-through metal detector.

(TSA agents are notorious for scolding passengers for not pushing through trays.)

Once you step in front of a scanner, a TSA agent will signal for you to walk through and then you’ll simply wait to be cleared.

If an alarm goes off or you have an item with you that needs enhanced screening, an agent may need to take a closer look. This could involve your items getting swabbed or you getting some type of pat down or both.

Step 7: Verify your gate

At this point, all of the stressful stuff is over with!

Now, you can relax as you head to your gate assuming that you are not running through the airport Home Alone style.

But this is also the perfect time to verify that your gate number has not changed.

The way to do this is to simply check one of the flight monitors found in the airport, often located near security.

You will look for your flight number and destination on that screen and verify what terminal and gate you are flying from. While this information should also be on your boarding pass, sometimes it can change which is why this is such a good time to verify.

Step 8: Find the food court or airport lounges if needed

If you have a lot of time to kill you may want to spend it at a restaurant or bar inside the airport. Or, if you have lounge access then you’ll want to find an appropriate lounge to visit.

Ideally, you will find a restaurant or lounge close to your gate. If you are lucky, you might even be right next to your gate and in that case you can really relax because you know it will only take you a couple of minutes to get to your gate when it is time to board.

I typically try to first make my way towards my gate and see if I see any stores or restaurants located along the way.

If you need to venture far from your gate then try to ask an airport agent or employee how far away your gate is. They should be able to let you know if you’re dealing with a five minute walk versus a 20 minute walk.

airport visit places

Step 9: Get any drinks or snacks needed for the flight

The most important thing for me on a flight is to have sufficient water. I don’t trust the water on the plane so I always make sure I have bottled water.

Ideally, I have my refillable water bottle with a filter that I can fill up at the airport with a drinking fountain machine or fill station. But if I don’t have that then we will just buy the overpriced water bottles at one of the new stand stores in the terminal.

You also want to think about snacks.

Food on the aircraft is not always the most appetizing so you might want to purchase something at one of the stores to take with you, especially on a longer flight. Good food items include sandwiches and wraps but just try not to buy anything that will have a strong odor!

Step 10: Show up to boarding on time

The boarding time for your flight should be found on your boarding pass.

The exact boarding time will depend on the size of your aircraft but generally you can expect boarding to be about 35 to 50 minutes prior to departure.

These are the absolute latest times you should arrive at the gate for boarding:

  • Domestic: 15 to 30 min before departure
  • International: 45 min+ before departure

airport visit places

Step 11: Make any needed boarding requests

If you think that you’ll need extra time to board or if you will need some type of assistance then you most likely qualify for pre-boarding .

This will give you an opportunity to get on the plane before all of the boarding groups are called. If you think you fall into this group simply speak with an agent at the gate and they can get you situated.

airport visit places

Step 12: Final bathroom check

While there will be a bathroom on the airplane, it helps if you relieve yourself just before the flight while still on the ground.

You can do this by hitting up the bathroom nearest to your gate just a little bit before boarding begins.

Another way to do this is to use the bathroom on the aircraft as soon as you enter the plane. That can be a little bit more tricky because you might be dealing with a lot of passenger traffic so it’s not always recommended.

Step 13: Begin boarding when your group is called

Your boarding pass will have a specific boarding group listed on it and every airline has a different system for how they board.

Most of them utilize boarding groups and the order of those groups is determined based on things like your cabin, elite status, credit card membership, etc. All you need to do is to wait for your specific group to be called in then head to the line.

For a deep dive into the boarding policy of a given airline, check out the guides below:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Frontier Airlines
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Southwest Airlines
  • United Airlines

If you follow these 13 steps, your next airport visit should be pretty smooth as you’ll know exactly what to expect and you will avoid creating a lot of bottlenecks that inexperienced travelers often create!

The Best U.S. Cities to Turn a Layover Into an Action-packed Day Trip

airport visit places

Layovers can be a great way to explore a destination before hopping on a connecting flight, but squeezing in the time to get to and from the airport and explore a city in just a few hours can be tricky.

Some cities offer airports that are closer to their downtown and attractions, giving travelers the chance to take the time that would be spent waiting for a flight at the gate and use it to grab a local bite or tick an activity off their list.

To determine which cities make it easy to have an active layover, online travel service company CheapTickets took a look at the nation’s airports to determine the top five locations for a "playover" — what the company defines as a layover in a city where the airport is close enough to the center to allow for a day trip without missing a connecting flight.

CheapTickets started by examining the U.S. airports that were most visited through bookings made on its website within the last year, narrowing down the list to include airports based in major regions throughout the U.S that offer a public transportation time of 50 minutes or less to the city center and to notable attractions.

Each city was then ranked based on the following factors: the travel time from the airport to the city’s downtown, the cost of a round-trip ticket on public transit to the city’s downtown or to a nearby area of interest, the available public transportation options, and attractions travelers can see within four to eight hours (including travel time to and from the airport).

Boston came out on top, with Logan International Airport offering travelers several public transportation options. See which cities ranked in the top five below.

1. Boston: Boston Logan International Airport

Public transportation options from Boston Logan International Airport include water taxis , which travelers can get to by taking the free #66 shuttle from the airport’s terminals.

Travelers can also take the Silver Line (SL1) bus to get from the airport to Boston’s Seaport District , which is noted for its harbor promenade, landscaped parks, and variety of shops and restaurants. The ride takes about 19 minutes and is free from the airport to the Seaport District. Rides back to the airport cost $2.50.

At the seaport, visitors can see the Boston Fish Pier , stroll through the Rose Kennedy Greenway to explore its gardens and plazas, or admire a variety of art at the Institute of Contemporary Art .

Visitors can also take both the Silver Line and the Blue Line to get to downtown Boston in around 30 minutes.

In downtown, history abounds at locations like the Old State House and the Paul Revere House . Seafood fanatics can head to Neptune Oyster , where diners line up to taste the famed oysters, buttered lobster rolls, and raw seafood selections.

For dessert head to Mike’s Pastry to sample Italian treats such as cannoli and gelato in a pastry shop that has been open since 1946.

2. Atlanta: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

From the airport, visitors can take the MARTA train to get to downtown Atlanta in roughly 16 to 20 minutes for $2.50 each way.

Once downtown, travelers can enjoy activities like a visit to Centennial Olympic Park to take in the free daily shows of the Fountain of Rings — the world’s largest interactive fountain featuring the symbol of the Olympic Ring.

Downtown Atlanta is also home to the Georgia Aquarium , which features thousands of animals and a variety of exhibits. Meanwhile, Coca Cola lovers can visit a museum dedicated to the history of the company at The World of Coca-Cola . The 20-acre complex is home to over 100 types of beverages visitors can sample, in addition to 200-year-old artifacts and historic accounts.

When it's time to eat, make sure to stop into the Busy Bee soul food restaurant, which has been open since 1947 and serves dishes that range from fried cube steak to old fashioned banana pudding.

3. Chicago: Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Chicago Midway International Airport

After landing at Chicago O’Hare International Airport , travelers can take the CTA Blue Line to reach downtown Chicago in roughly 45 minutes for $5. The Orange Line will connect travelers from the Midway International Airport to downtown Chicago in about 30 minutes for $2.50 each way.

In downtown, visitors can check out popular attractions like the famed Millennium Park and Cloud Gate (known as “The Bean”), Lurie Garden , the Maggie Daly park , and the Chicago Riverwalk to enjoy scenic strolls filled with river views.

The all-local Revival Food Hall is also within close distance and hosts Mindy’s Hot Chocolate , where hot chocolate add-ons include butterscotch and cognac shots, maple syrup, and homemade marshmallows.

4. Philadelphia: Philadelphia International Airport

The SEPTA train stops at every major terminal at Philadelphia International Airport, easily transporting passengers to Center City in roughly 25 minutes.

The Airport Line service runs seven days a week between 5 a.m. and midnight, and costs $6.75 when purchased in advance and $8 one-way for regular purchases on weekdays. On weekday evenings and weekends, rides cost $5.25 one-way when purchased in advance and $7 one-way for regular purchases.

Once at Center City , visitors can explore more than half a dozen neighborhoods that make up Philadelphia’s downtown. Here is where you’ll find historic neighborhoods like Old City and Society Hill , and a variety of shops, restaurants, and parks.

Various corridors throughout the area have their own charm to offer, from the Midtown Village and its independently owned restaurants, hotels, and boutiques to Rittenhouse Row and its upscale selection of galleries and spas.

5. Las Vegas: McCarran International Airport

There are several options provided by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada for riders headed from McCarran International Airport to Las Vegas’s famous strip and to downtown.

Passengers who arrive at Terminal 1 can use Routes 108 (Paradise), 109 (Maryland Parkway), and the Westcliff Airport Express (WAX) from the Ground Level Zero. From Terminal 3, options include the WAX or the Centennial Express from the Departures Level.

Each ride costs $2 per person, or $5 for a 24-hour pass, with rides taking roughly 15 minutes to arrive at the Las Vegas Strip and 40 minutes to get downtown. The Strip is home to a variety of Las Vegas’s popular casinos and resorts and attractions that include the Bellagio fountain show and the world’s tallest observation wheel .

Try Bavette’s Steakhouse and Bar for a selection of meats, seafood towers, and classic cocktails, or head to the Cosmopolitan’s The Chandelier bar to drink under millions of shimmering crystals.

Before I was an airline pilot and I heard the words “John F. Kennedy International Airport,” I imagined a place that was the gateway to the world. Merely saying these words evoked visions of glamor, travel, and excitement. Now that I fly around the world as a commercial airline pilot, I understand the important logistics of this airport for international travel.

Because international flights all leave at similar times and must go through quite the logistical dance when they arrive — customs/security checks, cleaning, maintenance reviews, catering, and swapping of flight crews — most international passengers connecting through JFK will have a layover of 3–6 hours.

That said, there are many things to do at JFK. A little pre-planning can fill hours with entertaining activities, all the while helping to recharge your mind before your next long flight. Get ready to fill your senses with great food, visual eye candy, and soothing relaxation while you stop over at the gateway to the world.

Pro Tip: Here’s a tip to avoid long delays during peak vacation season. When traveling in the summer, it’s best to book your flight early in the morning due to chronic summer thunderstorms. Thunderstorms commonly happen later in the day east of the Mississippi River. Most “first-flights” of the day have a higher arrival time percentage, making your connection more probable.

8 Fantastic Things To Do Near JFK Airport

1. tick tock, tick tock.

Although this requires you to leave the secure area, head over to the TWA Hotel , just outside of Terminal 5. This amazing, hip blast from the past is a great way to stretch your legs while you stride back into the ’60s, a bygone era.

View the "Connie" behind the glass at the lounge in TWA Hotel at JFK International Airport.

I think this is actually a destination, a mecca , for airline junkies! The hotel is steeped with historical, museum-quality displays, great music, and something new around literally every corner. It’s hard to miss the actual 1958 Lockheed Constellation “Connie” airplane located on the property. Be sure to have a snack in the actual “Connie,” served by a staff of ’60s themed flight attendants, go-go boots and all! It was named one of the best airline cocktail lounges in the world by Departures Magazine .

If you want to work out, the hotel offers a day pass to use its 10,000-square-foot gym. I prefer to head up to the year-round heated rooftop pool, grab a snack, and look down at the ramp, watching the airliners come and go. Stop by the Herman Miller reading room and sit in a real Eames leather recliner chair, or sit at the modern desks and scroll through history books. And a visit to this historic AvGeek’s dream place would not be complete without leaving with a bag full of TWA souvenirs.

Pro Tip: Take an Instagram shot and recreate the movie scene from To Catch a Thief in the iconic tunnel of the hotel, which joins up with Terminal 5.

2. Getting Around

Jump on the free monorail, also known as the “air-train ,” that connects all six terminals. It operates every 2–5 minutes.

Delta Airlines and its affiliates operate the JFK Jitney shuttle bus between Terminals 2 and 4. Once on the bus, you shouldn’t have to re-clear security on arrival. Always double check with an agent to make sure you have enough time to catch your flight.

Times Square in New York City.

3. To Leave Or Not To Leave

For the more adventurous who might have a longer layover, consider leaving the airport and heading to one of the greatest cities in the world, New York City . It’s as easy as renting a car or jumping on a bus or train.

There are a few ways to get to the city. If time is a concern, take an Uber or cab. Depending on the time of the day, it will run about $65. Taking the train or bus is slower and costs less: about $12. Plan for at least an hour into the city. If I were going to zip to the city, I would head to Times Square, also known as midtown, on the island of Manhattan.

JetBlue Loyalty Program Perk even takes its members from Manhattan to the airport in minutes and vice versa. Forty-second and Broadway is a great spot to get dropped off, walk around, eat some food, and see all the dazzling electronic lights of this iconic place. Times Square is in the Theater District, so it’s hopping at all times of day!

On a really long layover at JFK airport, you can visit Central Park, Queens Botanical Garden, the Empire State Building, or Even Ellis Island.

Pro Tip: If you are planning on leaving a secure area, be sure to get a boarding pass at the Customer Booking Center for your next flight, saving time and bypassing gate check-in. Proceed directly to security en route to your gate. Check with your airline to see if you can drop your luggage at their lost luggage area for an hourly fee. (Most luggage lockers were removed from airports after 9/11 for security reasons.) Consider getting a Clear pass, free for two months, for a faster security check-in.

Info cube with QR for food locations inside JFK International Airport.

4. Let’s Grab Some Grub

The six terminals within JFK Airport offer different, and equally scrumptious, food options. From Turkish peynirli toast to Irish pub grub or a wine bar, there is something for everyone. All throughout the airport, you will see white, lit cubes. Located on the cubes is a QR code to scan, giving you access to food and shops in your vicinity. For those who wish to have some libations, there are a few nice wine shops and upscale restaurants to sip cocktails or wine.

5. Spa-La-La

If getting pampered sounds like a dreamy way to spend your layover, you have come to the right airport. Consider a hot stone massage, pedicure, or full body massage. Be Relax spa, located in Terminal 5, is open 7 days a week to pamper your tired body. Consider trying their special oxygen or aromatherapy treatment with your service to enhance your wellbeing. I recommend you try the “anti-jet-lag” facial treatment.

6. Hit The Lounge

There are 23 airline lounges, of which seven offer single-entry passes for purchase. These passes are for people who don’t have access to the lounge through their credit card or aren’t booked in business or first class.

Aer Lingus, Air France, Alaska, American, Prime Class Lounge, and Wing Tips Lounge offer single-use day passes. Depending on your airline, some might have codeshare agreements with these lounges. Plan ahead and check to see if there is a discount to book your single-entry pass online versus paying at the door.

These lounges are wonderful places to recharge, relax, and fuel up with complimentary food and drink. They are places to rest, recharge your electronics, or work in designated areas. JFK Airport is the sixth-busiest airport in the country — it services 61 million passengers annually — and utilizing these plush lounges can really benefit your mind and mood!

There is also a USO Lounge for military members and their families located in Terminal 5.

Shopping options at JFK International Airport.

7. Shop Till You Drop

Every terminal offers a variety of shopping options for the world traveler. Terminal 1 offers high-end stores such as Coach and Juicy Couture. Head over to Terminal 2 if you need tech items you might have forgotten at home. (Consider purchasing noise-canceling headphones which can drown out a crying child in the row behind you!)

Step over to Terminal 4 and stroll through Duty-Free to get a great price on fancy colognes or makeup.

Over in Terminal 5, check out The New York Times Store and catch up on the latest top-selling books.

You can also experience the luxury of the newly renovated Terminal 8 and indulge in some airport shopping before you fly with a wide range of shops. Terminal 8 offers a unique shopping experience over nearly 60,000 square feet with authentic local eateries and a variety of Fifth Avenue retailers.

8. Drop And Give Me 10

If you are like me and constantly want to work out, consider finding a quiet, small area off to the side and squeezing in a workout. There are many free exercise videos online to use to stay focused, burn off some stress, and keep your heart healthy. Consider speed walking through the air-conditioned terminals. Make a goal to walk 10,000 steps and reward yourself with a healthy drink from the Shake Shack .

If you want to be active and have fun, JFK even has a curling rink that you can try out.

Coming Soon: Slumber Away

Terminal 4 will soon become host to Minute Suites , a new respite with clean, private suites for weary travelers. Lucky JFK travelers will get to experience the seven new suites with a bathroom and shower. These suites are extremely sanitary and are available for hourly rentals or overnight. Clean linen and pillows are provided for napping. Netflix and DirecTV are available, or you can pipe your own tunes through their TV.

Can I Connect with Nature at JFK?

Yes, you can, but the options are scarce. There are not many things to do at JFK Airport to keep in touch with nature, but there is still something you can do while waiting for your flight. If you’re flying out of Terminal 5, check out JetBlue’s T5 Rooftop Garden, with a variety of plants and flowers.

What Is the Most Budget-Friendly Activity to Pass the Time at JFK?

Watch Planes Take-Off and Land: JFK Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, and watching planes take off and land can be an exciting experience. JFK Airport has several dedicated viewing areas where you can watch the taking-offs and landings. The rooftop parking lot of Terminal 5 has unobstructed views of the airport runways.

Where to Entertain the Kids at JFK?

With the variety of climbing structures, slides, and interactive games, The T5 Kids Play Area in Terminal 5 is the ideal place where children can blow off some steam before or after a flight. JFK Airport also has a range of kid-focused dining options to satisfy your little ones’ appetites. Also, stroller movement throughout the airport is smooth with wide corridors, spacious elevators, and accessible ramps You will even find designated stroller parking areas.

Can I Worship at the JFK?

Yes. There’s an Interfaith Alley in JFK Airport at Terminal 4. Getting in touch with your spiritual side can be a great way to get away from the chaos of the airport. At JFK Airport there are four places where you can worship that sit side by side – a Jewish synagogue, a Protestant chapel, a Roman Catholic church, and an Islamic center. Whatever your denomination or nationality, you can find tranquility here during your layover at JFK Airport.

What is the Best Hotel For Business Travelers Near JFK?

The Crowne Plaza JFK Airport New York City is the best accommodation for business travelers. At a price of around 200$ for a standard room, you get a huge business center, amenities like free Wi-Fi and parking services, a fitness area, and an American cuisine restaurant that will make your stay enjoyable. The hotel also provides its guests with free shuttle rides to and from the John F. Kennedy International Airport.

THINGS TO DO AT THE AIRPORT TO STAY OCCUPIED

No reason for you to be bored waiting to catch the next flight. Here is one awesome list I compiled for how to keep yourself entertained at the airport.

1| RESEARCH RESTAURANTS WHERE YOU ARE GOING

While you are waiting for a flight do some research and check out the grub where you are staying. This is a great way to kill time at an airport and super fun! Find all the local hotspots and where to dine on some true authentic cuisine. Might as well make some reservations too if able.

Um, I don’t know about you, but since adulting, I could always catch up on some zzz’s. Although, catching a nap by the gate isn’t ideal or the most comfortable, most airports have a cozy spot to lay your head. Check the airport for lounges or Minute Suites you can book for an hour or two. Most of these places offer a bed or at least a sofa to stretch your legs.

Just don’t forget to set your alarm so you’re not stuck at the airport longer than you need to be.

3| READ A BOOK OR KINDLE

picture of a Kindle and books

Another way to kill time at an airport is reading a book. Pack a book or Kindle in your carry-on. If our prefer not to pack one more thing with you the plane, there are plenty of free reading apps to download on your phone.

Check out the few I have listed below:

  • Aldiko – Free classics are available with this application. If browsing you don’t see anything that flips your face, you can purchase new reads.
  • Bookfunnel – Short stories and novels written by new authors.  Oodles Ebook Reader – You are bound to find a good read in this application that entails over 50,000 reads. Also available in 10 languages.
  • Overdrive – This app allows to you connect to your local library and have access to its database. Select from audiobooks, videos, or ebooks.

4| ORGANIZE YOUR PLAYLIST

Another thing you can do when you are bored in an airport is organized your music playlist. I don’t know about you all, but my playlist is a hot mess. Take this time to take care of the tedious tasks of organizing your playlist. Get some new tunes in there too!

5| CHAT WITH FRIENDS/FAMILY

Keep yourself entertained and call that nosey family member. You may have avoided their calls, but since you are waiting for a flight play catch up. That lengthy phone call will eliminate most of your time waiting at the airport. Not feeling so brave? I don’t blame you pal. Give your friends a call and brag about everything you have planned for your upcoming trip.

6| WATCH A MOVIE

Pull out the phone or laptop and watch a movie or two you have been dying to see but haven’t had time.

7| EXPLORE THE AIRPORT

Check out the airport and see how long it will take you to get from one end to the other. Have you ever noticed some terminals are a lot cooler than others?

8| GRAB A DRINK

Picture of a cocktail. Grabbling a drink at the bar is one of the many things to do at the airport.

Find a nice bar and sip on a cocktail. Go ahead and order your favorite, or two, or three!  While there, get chatty with your neighbor. Find out where they are going. If you’re a bit timid, pull out a book and sip on your adult beverage.

9| EXERCISE

Take advantage of the time and stretch those legs before boarding the plane for a flight. Some airports have a gym so go squeeze in one last workout before vacation.

10| DO SOME WORK

Tie up those loose ends with your job and reply to last-minute emails.

11| LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE

blackboard with hello written in various languages. Learning a language is one of the things to do at the airport.

Keep yourself entertained at the airport and learn the language for where you are visiting. Some very common phrases to pick up and that are super helpful are thank you, excuse me, please, how are you, good morning/night, check please, hello, and bye.

Locals tend to appreciate this kind gesture from tourists and are more eager to help. Check out some phone apps I used and absolutely love.

  • Michel Thomas Method – If you’re looking to learn a few quick simple and common phrases this is your app. It is fun and very interactive like you are in the classroom with the students you are listening to.
  • Duolingo – This is another great application to learn another language. It is set up as a game, so this is great for you are bored at the airport.
  • Rosetta Stone – You can get up to 30-minutes of course content for free! When done review all the information so you are speaking like a pro before you arrive.

12| GO FOR A MASSAGE

Splurge while you’re at the airport and get a massage so you arrive to your destination recharged. It’s also a great way to relax before hopping on your next flight.

13| GO SHOPPING

Shopping at the airport can be a little pricey, but there are some stores that may appease your wallet. Browse the airport for stores that you wouldn’t see back home. Don’t forget to check out the duty-free stores and stock up on some goodies.

14| CHECK FOR AN UPGRADE

picture of the check in gate

Hey hey, try and get an upgrade. Ask the agent for a different seat or vouchers to use on the plane or while waiting at the airport.

15| UPDATE YOUR PHOTO ALBUM

Who else as a bazillion photos on their phone like me? Go through delete the ones you can live without and take up space.

16| FRESHEN UP

While waiting for your flight, go freshen yourself up a bit. Remove that cabin air from your flight and get all sexy again before heading to the bar. Check out my post on all the carry-on essentials you need for long flights to feel revived.

17| PEOPLE WATCH

Find a cozy little nook at the gate or a restaurant and people-watch. Try and guess what they are saying or where they are going.

18| PLAN YOUR TRIP

Check out additional activities for your trip. Book some super fun excursions such as dolphin watching, cooking classes, or walking tours. Some of my favorites to book from are Triple and Showaround. It’s a great way to experience the city from a local.

19| LISTEN TO A PODCAST

Another fun thing to do at the airport to avoid boredom is to listen to your favorite podcasts. Browse new ones to get while waiting at the airport.

20| CHECK THE WEATHER

Check the weather where you are going and where you live. Brag to your family and friends if you’re heading to sunny skies, blue water, and palm trees.

21| PLAY GAMES ON YOUR PHONE

Play some of your favorite games on your phone.

22| RESPOND TO EMAILS

Check your emails and clean out your inbox. It’s time to remove all those unread messages located on your mail app on your phone.

23| LISTEN TO MUSIC

Just chill and listen to some of your favorite tunes.

24| CLEAN YOUR PURSE OR WALLET

Take the time to clean out your purse or wallet. No one likes to do it, but it’s a great way to time to kill at the airport. Of course, don’t flaunt your money, just get rid of all those old receipts, old gum, or whatever else didn’t think was still inside.

25| CHECK OUT YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA

Get on your social media and engage with your friends. Check out their photos and show them some love.

26| EDIT YOUR PHOTOS

Another fun thing to do while at the airport is to edit all those photos.

27| GRAB A BITE TO EAT

picture of a salad eating a restaurant is one of the many things to do at the airport

Find a delicious restaurant in the airport and chow down on some grub. Don’t go with something you’re familiar with, try something new and different. Go for a restaurant with the local cuisine.

28| CHAT IT UP AT THE BAR OR RESTAURANT

Strike up a conversation with other people at the airport. They are more than likely waiting for the plane like you. Get chatty with your neighbor at the bar. Find out where they are going or where they have been. It is a great way to connect with other like-minded people who may enjoy traveling like you. Who knows, you may end up meeting your best friend!

29| WRITE IN YOUR JOURNAL

Documenting in your journal about your upcoming trip or anything fascinating that’s happened in your life is one of the other things you can do at the airport.

30| GET A MANI-PEDI

One of my favorite things to do at the airport is get a mani-pedi. I like to get my toes and nails all dazzled up if I didn’t get time prior to my trip.

FINAL TIP FOR THINGS TO DO AT THE AIRPORT

If you’re a frequent flyer, invest in an awesome travel credit card . With my American Express Platinum Credit Card layovers have become a breeze. Make sure your card has Priority Pass entry though. You will be able to visit lounges in 500+ cities. I have accessed lounges in Mauritius, Brussels , Zurich , Paris , Vienna , and many more. They have comfy couches, showers, WiFi, free food (and it is good), and unlimited alcoholic beverages for free!

This card has been a game-changer for me since traveling. TSA Pre-check is included which makes going through the security lines super quick. You don’t need to take off your shoes and everything stays in your carry-on. What is even more amazing is the lines are ridiculously short. Global Entry is another added bonus with a good travel credit card. No more waiting in those long lines in customs.

This is a great post! When I’m at the airport I usually try and walk around as much as possible prior to the flight. I then often call family/friends while having a drink in an airport bar. When I’m doing long haul flights (I do these a lot as I am Australian and live in Canada) I often book the showers available at some airports to freshen up on stop overs.

It’s always nice to freshen up. I usually do the same in one of the lounges. It’s nice to get that cabin air off.

Organise your playlist and write in your journal are PERFECT recommendations! I never thought of those two before. I usually just pop a squat in a restaurant and eat and drink wine haha! Lovely post.

Hey, eating and drinking is always a good idea 😉

I’m always too busy trying to figure out transport and accommodation before I board my plane to the next destination – haha! Oh the good ol’ days huh?!

Oh, I know right? I miss the airport so much right now!

Great ideas! I always bring plenty of stuff to do when I’m headed to the airport–it’s nice to keep occupied! :]

Yes it is really nice to stay busy at the airport!

I really enjoyed this list. Editing photos and working on language skills never crossed my mind! One of my favorite airport pastimes is shopping, though. Saving this for later.

Thank you so much! I love shopping too at the airport! Check out those apps, they are great!

These are awesome ways to pass the time in most places! Great list, and I especially love your credit card recommendation. I’ve been researching the best travel card to get so will definitely check out the Amex Platinum.

Thank you. I love that credit card. There are so many perks! I haven’t been in a lounge I didn’t love.

These are some great ideas! I love hitting up the airport lounge if there is one I can get into. I always try to get some work done as well.

I love airport lounges. And squeezing in a little work is always good!

Some good ideas here. I am always looking for ways to kill some time in the airport 🙂

Yes it seems like it takes forever waiting for that flight!

Awesome list, I would never think about going for a massage but most of the time I’m checking the weather and social media. Thanks for the other ideas, some of them I would never think about.

Oh a massage is a great way to relax before getting on that plane again!

Thanks for this great guide! I love this inspiration! I normally spend my time at the airport alternating between panicking I’ll miss the flight I’m 3 hours early for and eating like I’m never going to see food again! I’ll try out some of these tips next time! Hannah | https://getlost.blog/

You’re too funny! I get paranoid too missing my flight. Thanks for the compliment!

This is such a great list! I usually just end up watching stuff on my tablet and eating haha. I think waiting around can be so tiring sometimes so this list is really helpful in making you feel a bit more productive during those times.

You’re so right! It can be tiring waiting at the airport. Thank you so much!

I love this list of things to do! I’m always looking for ways to make the most of my time and lounge passes, it’s such a weird luxury to actually take a shower in an airport–I feel like a new woman after getting freshened up, and I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who cleans out my purse while waiting.

Thank you so much for stopping by! I love the lounges when I am at the airport. And, hey if you have the time why not clean out the purse!

I actually love spending time at the airport and getting food and coffee and just exploring the place! Thanks for the other tips.

I wish I loved hanging around the airport. But, now I do appreciate it more!

I love these ideas! I usually people watch, work, or plan last minute details. Will save for future trips ?

People watching is always fun!

Great suggestions. I spend so many hours at airports when travelling for business… anything under a five hour wait is considered a quick coffee break. I tend to use the time to catch up on work or write blog posts. And go through bucket loads of coffee whilst doing so 😉 it’s only when I travel with my husband, that I actually bother to explore the airport (as he gets so excited to travel and wants to see it all and browse and shop)

So great you are able to keep yourself busy. I usually try to leave, but when I only have 3 hours it isn’t worth the risk. That is great your husband gets excited.

So many great ideas! Never even thought about them, when I was bored… Thanks!x

No problem! You won’t go bored now!

great list of things to do at the airport. i really love these tips and added for the next time travelling. thanks for sharing this amazing article and tips about things to do at the airport.

2. Watch The Sound & Light Show (Jewel)

The only thing better than seeing the Changi airport’s giant waterfall in the daytime, is seeing it illuminated at night for the sound and light show!

This is a short sound and light show that’s projected directly onto the waterfall, and the whole room is lit up with alternating colors and epic music. It’s a fun and impressive experience.

The sound and light show is usually put on several times every evening, but the times can vary by month. You can check current and upcoming show times on the Jewel Changi website .

It’s definitely one of the best things to do in Singapore airport!

3. Walk The Canopy Bridge (Jewel)

After you’ve seen the Rain Vortex waterfall from below, go to the canopy bridge and see it from above!

This is a transparent glass bridge suspended 23 meters above ground. If you’ve never walked on a glass bottom bridge before, this is a great place to try it! The bridge is kid-friendly and not too scary to walk on, even if you aren’t a big fan of heights.

You can buy your tickets online for this experience before you go. The tickets never sell out, but buying them in advance can speed up the process and save you a bit of hassle when you’re there.

Singapore is a great country for shopaholics, and the Changi airport is no exception.

There are lots of shopping outlets all over Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the Singapore airport, but the best shopping is arguably in the Changi Jewel mall, which has almost 300 food and shopping outlets of its own.

You can find everything here, including luxury goods, jewelry, watches, clothing, shoes, electronics, toys, gifts, souvenirs, chocolate, wine, and more!

On the Changi website, you can browse through a full shopping directory for the Singapore airport, as well as opening hours for all shopping outlets.

There are viewing malls located in Terminals 1, 2, and 3 of Changi. These are part of the public area of the airport (not airside), so you’ll see them before you pass immigration and ‘exit’ Singapore for your flight.

7. Relax At The Spa (Terminal 1/2/3)

If you really want to relax and unwind between flights, you can hit up a day spa for massage therapy, foot reflexology, manicure/pedicure, and shower facilities.

Singapore airport has spa outlets on the airside of Terminals 1, 2, and 3. You can see a complete list of locations and opening hours on their website .

8. Stay In An Airport Hotel (Terminal 1/2/3)

If you have a longer transit in the Singapore airport, you’ll want to book a stay at one of the comfy airport hotels.

There are transit hotels located in Terminals 1, 2, and 3 of Changi airport. Here’s a brief summary of your options:

  • YOTELAIR Singapore Changi . Located in the public area of the Changi Jewel (not airside), but within walking distance of Terminals 1, 2, and 3. Small but comfy double rooms.
  • Aerotel Transit Hotel . Located on the airside of Terminal 1. Solo or double rooms are available, and they also have an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, and more.
  • Ambassador Transit Hotel . Located on the airside of Terminals 2 and 3. Clean and comfortable rooms, but slightly overpriced for what you get.

Or, if you want to stay and enjoy the pool longer, you can make an overnight booking at the Aerotel and get complimentary pool access.

12. Enjoy The Free Movie Theaters (Terminal 2/3)

If you have enough time to spare, you should definitely take advantage of the free movie theaters in the Singapore airport!

There are free theaters located airside in Terminals 2 and 3, and they show lots of great movies for adults and kids alike. Just remember to set a reminder on your phone so you don’t forget about your boarding time!

Aside from occasional maintenance, Changi’s movie theaters are open every day, 24 hours a day. You can find more information about the location and opening hours on their website.

13. Visit The Butterfly Garden (Terminal 3)

Changi is unique for having the world’s first butterfly garden in an airport! It’s a nice little tropical habitat with a grotto waterfall and more than 1,000 tropical butterflies from about 40 species.

We had fun walking through the two-story garden and taking pictures of the butterflies up close, and sometimes a butterfly will even land on you. It’s definitely one of the best things to do in Singapore airport!

The Butterfly Garden is free to visit, and it’s open 24/7. It’s located on the airside of Terminal 3, and if you’re in transit you can also reach it from other parts of the Singapore airport using the Skytrain or on foot.

14. Go Down The Slide (Terminal 3)

Last but not least, Changi is home to Singapore’s tallest slide, and it’s also the tallest slide in an airport anywhere in the world!

It’s a curvy slide that is 12 meters tall (four stories high), and should be lots of fun for kids and kids at heart. The Slide is open daily from 12 PM (noon) to 10:30 PM. You can find more information on the Changi website .

The Slide is part of the public area of Changi (not airside), so you need to pass through immigration and ‘enter’ Singapore to see it. It’s located in Terminal 3, and you can also reach it from other parts of the Singapore airport using the Skytrain, shuttle bus, or on foot.

15. Visit The Country Of Singapore

After you’ve exhausted all of the best things to do in Singapore airport, it’s time to go outside and see the country of Singapore!

If you have a long layover in Singapore of at least 5 or 6 hours, that’s generally considered to be enough time to exit the airport and go see some things in the city, although you’ll still want to be conservative and keep an eye on your watch.

Better yet, if you have plenty of free time in Southeast Asia, then you should definitely book a hotel and spend a few days in Singapore seeing all of the famous sights in the country, like Chinatown, Little India, and Gardens by the Bay.

For day tours in Singapore, we recommend GetYourGuide . We’ve used them for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great!

You can use this service to pre-book entrance tickets to Singapore’s popular attractions, and they also have private tours that take you to some of the best places in Singapore. Highly recommended!

1. Bring your own snacks.

Avoid paying super-steep airport prices for snacks by bringing your own with you! Some of my favorite snacks to bring with me for flights are popcorn, fruit leather, energy bars, and trail mix.

🥜 See more airplane snack ideas for long flights .

2. Pack an empty water bottle.

I always bring an empty water bottle with me in my carry-on luggage so I can fill it up once I get through security.

Most airports have water bottle refill stations or at least a water fountain you can use. This will help you save money instead of buying an overpriced water bottle at the airport.

This refillable water bottle is perfect for travel because it comes with a filtering straw that makes water from anywhere safe to drink!

3. Check in for your flight in advance.

Be sure to check in for your flight online 24 hours in advance so you don’t have to wait in line once you get to the airport. This can also be a great way to grab a good seat assignment if you weren’t able to select your seat when you booked your ticket.

Another incentive to check in for your flight before you arrive at the airport: Some budget airlines are now charging extra if you wait to check in with an agent!

4. Wear socks

Some airports make you take your shoes off when going through security, especially in the US. To avoid standing barefoot on the dirty airport floor, make sure to wear socks! They will also come in handy for keeping your feet warm on your flight.

5. Dress in layers for your flight

On a similar note to above, dress in layers to stay comfortable while at the airport and on your flight. Airports and airplanes can either be extremely cold or extremely hot and usually there’s no happy in-between so wearing layers will help.

6. Bring a portable charger

Not all airports have convenient outlets or charging stations while you’re waiting at the gate, so be sure to bring a portable charger with you! I take this portable phone charger everywhere I go and it has been a lifesaver when I’m traveling.

7. Pack your laptop in an easy to reach place

You will have to take your laptop or any other large electronics out of your bag when going through security. To avoid having to dig through your bag while waiting in line, make sure to pack your laptop or any other electronics in a side pocket of your luggage with easy access.

For frequent business travelers, you may also want to get a carry-on suitcase with a laptop compartment . This makes it a breeze to reach for your laptop at the airport!

8. Take a photo of your parking space

If you’ll be parking at the airport, make sure to take a picture of your parking space and any helpful signage or numbering that will help you find it again when you return.

There’s nothing worse than returning from a vacation only to be unable to remember where you parked your car, leading you to wander around the airport parking garage for an hour!

9. Take a photo of your checked luggage

On the off chance that your checked luggage gets lost, having a photo of it in addition to your luggage receipt can make it much easier to locate.

10. Pack hand sanitizer

Airports and airplanes are a mecca for germs, so pack a travel-sized hand sanitizer wherever you go. I like  this hand sanitizer because you can easily clip it to your backpack or purse.

11. Research sleep spots

If you’ll need to spend the night in an airport because your flight was delayed or you have a long layover, check out this website for the best and worst sleeping spots in most airports around the world.

Sleeping in the airport is never fun, but you can make it a little more comfortable if you plan in advance and know the best places to go.

12. Keep and pack hotel toiletries in carry-on

Every time you stay at a hotel, bring extra travel-sized toiletries home with you. Then any time you travel with only carry-on luggage, you’ll have a collection of TSA-approved toiletries to pack.

(And bonus, you won’t need to buy your own shampoo/conditioner as often!)

13. Put a colorful ribbon on your luggage

If you’re checking luggage, tie a colorful ribbon on the handle of your suitcase to make it stand out so you can find it quickly in the sea of similar luggage on the conveyor belt.

14. Go left at security

Studies have shown that people naturally veer right, so when you reach a security checkpoint, head to the line furthest to the left and you just might save a few minutes waiting in line.

15. Have a designated airplane outfit

Choose a comfortable outfit and make it your designated outfit for air travel. (I always wear leggings, a loose, lightweight hooded sweatshirt, and a coat if I’m going somewhere cold.)

If you have a designated outfit, you won’t be scrambling for something to wear on the day of your flight and you’ll always be comfortable at the airport and on the plane.

16. Invest in Global Entry

Having Global Entry has improved my airport experience a million times over.

If you are a frequent flyer (or even fly just 3-4 times per year) then Global Entry is worth the cost. Global Entry includes TSA Precheck, which allows you to skip the general security line and go through the faster TSA Precheck line (where you don’t have to take off your shoes or take your electronics out of your suitcase.)

When traveling internationally, you can also go through to an expedited customs line upon returning to the US. Global Entry costs $100 and is good for five years. If you just want TSA Precheck, you can get that for $85 and it’s good for five years.

My company paid for my Global Entry, but I would absolutely spend my own money on it. Some travel credit cards will also cover your Global Entry fee.

Quick Trips for Airport Layovers

Gateway Getaways

Most airports have decked out their facilities  to give travelers a pleasant experience while passing the time between flights. But if you're connecting through a city before your final destination and get a several-hour layover instead of a race from one gate to another, you don't need to stay inside — most airports have attractions close enough and quick enough to allow you to experience the local sights and delights. Just be aware of travel time away from the airport and back; of course it's safer to stick close to your gate. It just isn't much fun.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

Visit the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Near DIA

Denver The Denver airport is close to the great outdoors. "If you'd rather get out in nature, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is between the airport and downtown Denver" and offers 10 miles of hiking trail for animal watching, A Dangerous Business  author Amanda Williams says. The Rocky Mountain Arsenal  also has tours.

Art of Wynwood, Miami

Admire the Art of Wynwood Near Miami International Airport

Miami Fifteen minutes from Miami's airport is the street art of the Wynwood neighborhood, Williams says, which can be appreciated by organized tour or just by walking around on your own. The neighborhood is known for the famous Wynwood Walls , which feature murals by world-renowned street artists, as well as numerous art galleries, bustling restaurants, craft breweries, and trendy boutiques. Sightdoing.net blogger Becky Pokora agrees artsy Wynwood is "perfect" for a layover ; she had about four hours to get there and back.

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

Head to the Golden Gate Bridge From SFO

San Francisco Enjoy views of the Golden Gate Bridge if you have enough time on a layover in San Francisco: You can take relatively inexpensive BART mass transit, but be prepared to sight-see out light rail windows for a couple hours. A more expensive 40-minute trip by car allows more time to walk the 2-mile bridge.

Bean at Millennium Park, Chicago

See the Bean at Millennium Park During a Layover at O'Hare

Chicago Head for The Loop. At Millennium Park you can see the Bean and the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion and, depending on the season, plenty of outdoor activities. The Art Institute of Chicago is nearby, and, for really long layovers, the Siskel Film Center has daily showings. Forbes recommends setting aside at least six hours , but the L Train (with a $5 day pass) will get you to the park in around 40 minutes.

Mystery Castle, Phoenix

Tour the Mystery Castle Near Sky Harbor Airport

Phoenix Boyce Gully built an 18-room castle for his daughter in 1945, and she lived there until she died in 2010. While the  Mystery Castle  is closed to tours due to vandalism and storns, visiting can still make for an eccentric excursion during a layover  in Phoenix, iFly.com says. It's only about a 20-minute ride away by taxi or car service, on the edge of the South Mountain Park and Preserve.

World of Coca-Cola, Atlanta

Tour the World of Coca-Cola Near Hartsfield-Jackson

Atlanta The World of Coca-Cola  can be seen in around two hours, whether you do a self-guided tour (for $17 general admission) or book a VIP tour for $32 per person (beverage included) that lets you explore the Atlanta-based soda magnate from its 19th century history and secret formula  to Polar Bear photo ops and a 4D movie experience. The trip is just a half-hour by MARTA from the airport station to downtown Atlanta with an 11-minute walk.

Best Places to Travel After Christmas

Hit the Beach Near LAX

Los Angeles It would be a shame to spend hours inside LAX when the beach is right there . Manhattan Beach is the closest for short layovers to maximize your sunbathing or sightseeing time — just 20 minutes south down Sepulveda Boulevard in good traffic (fingers crossed!) — and it has a pier and downtown with restaurants and shops to explore. Venice or Santa Monica are fun choices if you have more time.

Park Street Church Tower, Boston

Explore The Freedom Trail During a Layover at Logan

Boston Logan is only 3 miles from downtown Boston, so you can accomplish a lot on a quick layover. Why not take in The Freedom Trail ? With 16 historic landmarks over two and a half miles, it'll make the most of your time in a historic city. There are guided tours that leave on the hour during the day, but you can walk it yourself and have the flexibility to stop and explore along the way. (For instance: Grabbing some pizza in the North End.)

Queens Botanical Gardens, Queens

Admire the Queens Botanical Gardens Near JFK

Queens, New York Since it's likely an hour each way into Manhattan proper, stick closer for layovers from JFK and see the Queens Botanical Gardens, a lush respite from the urban jungle and site of the 1939 World's Fair. It's less than 25 minutes by car.

The Spotted Cat Music Club, New Orleans

Hear Jazz at the Spotted Cat Music Club Near Louis Armstrong International Airport

New Orleans The average jazz set at the renowned Spotted Cat Music Club (bring cash; it doesn't take cards) lasts about 50 minutes, and catching one of three shows daily may still allow time to explore the French Quarter  before getting back to your next flight. The trip from the airport is about an hour and a half by mass transit, but less than a half-hour by car.

The Henry Ford Museum

Experience History at The Henry Ford Near Detroit Metro Airport

Detroit No question: Get to The Henry Ford  museum complex, with how much you see depending on how much time you have. The Henry Ford has more than 20 exhibits ranging from transportation to firearms and dollhouses. Greenfield Village is a monument to earlier innovators, such as the Wright Brothers and Thomas Edison and offers daily demonstrations of crafts such as glassblowing and cutting tin. The Ford Rouge Factory Tour lets you walk through a truck plant, and there are two theater experiences. The trip will be about an hour by mass transit, or likely less than a half-hour by car.

The Mall of America, Minneapolis

Explore The Mall of America Near Minneapolis-Saint Paul International

Minneapolis The Mall of America  is the biggest in the U.S., and you don't need to shop — you can also play mini golf, visit the aquarium or even enter the Nickelodeon Universe theme park — at this staggering monument to consumerism only 12 minutes from the airport by light rail.

Take a Helicopter Tour of Grand Canyon From McCarran International

Las Vegas The Las Vegas Strip  is only 15 minutes from McCarran Airport, but why spend time gambling when you can hop on a helicopter or plane tour? Air Tours  will fly you over the Grand Canyon in half a day, with some services just 20 minutes from a McCarran terminal. Viator  will do the flyover in only 25 minutes, though you'll need two hours to get to its ranch, and another two hours back. You can shop around for other helicopter tour offerings to find one suited to your layover.

Heavy Metal

Rock out at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Near Hopkins International

Cleveland You can easily spend a couple hours visiting the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame — open 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. most days, but until 9 p.m. select Thursdays — once downtown, says Williams, who also writes the Cleveland Traveler  blog and knows what layover visitors can accomplish in two or three hours. "You can get downtown from the Cleveland airport in 30 minutes using either a taxi/Uber or by taking the city's light rail," Williams says.

The Liberty Bell, Philadelphia

See the Liberty Bell Near Philadelphia International Airport

Philadelphia Stuck in Philly for a bit? You have to see the Liberty Bell — though the lines can be crazy and it may make sense to just peek through the glass walls, travel writer Wendy Perrin  suggests. That lets you move on to Independence National Historical Park, which is right there. The trip to Center City is about a half-hour by SEPTA mass transit; a car saves you only around 10 minutes.

Elvis Presley's grave in the remembrance garden at Graceland

Visit the King at Graceland Near Memphis International Airport

Memphis, Tennessee Elvis's home and museum  is doable on a Memphis layover. "From Memphis International, it's a short ride to Elvis' Graceland, which is an easy spot to spend a couple hours," Williams says. "Though I would note that the neighborhood Graceland is in isn't the best one to have a wander around on foot." If you have even more time, the National Civil Rights Museum is near Graceland.

Giddens Gallery of Fine Art, Grapevine, Texas

Visit Charming Grapevine Near Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport

Dallas-Fort Worth The city of Grapevine  made the most of proximity to the Dallas/Fort Worth travel hub. It runs an hourly shuttle from the airport to its walking district of shops and eateries. You can also ride a vintage train, see live shows, and visit art galleries.

Temple Square, Salt Lake City

Explore Temple Square Near Salt Lake City International Airport

Salt Lake City Temple Square offers riches for either historic or religious purposes, including the Beehive House (a museum about Brigham Young), Family History Library, conference center rooftop garden, and tabernacle and gardens for the famed Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square (until recently known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir). There are guided tours, but Wanderlust Princess Erika Aresta  did it alone, starting with a 15-minute trip by mass transit; the square is only 7 miles from the airport.

Pike Place Market, Seattle

Eat and Shop at Pike Place Market Near Seattle-Tacoma International

Seattle Pike Place Market  is classic Seattle, with eating, shopping, and diverse crafts available — and if your layover goes overnight you can catch comedy there on Wednesdays and a cabaret and burlesque on Saturdays. Getting there by light rail should take around 45 minutes including a walk, but it's less than a half-hour by car.

Washington Monument in Washington, D.C.

Stroll Along the The National Mall During a Layover at Dulles

Washington, D.C. On the National Mall , you can walk around the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument and see Smithsonian museums aplenty. Getting there from Dulles by mass transit might take an hour and a half; taking a car can cut that to about 45 minutes.

NEW YORK CITY - JFK Airport comes in sixth place in the nation for the longest delays, according to Places to Travel .

Places to Travel looked at data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics for almost 2 million delayed flights across the United States from January 2023 up until February 2024.

"However, the findings do still show that a massive number of flights are delayed, resulting in traveler stress and potential missed connections, among other consequences, and the air travel infrastructure needs to urgently adapt to handle the massive volumes of passengers to rectify this," Jason Wilson, CEO of Places to Travel said.

At JFK, the average late flight is delayed by 1 hour, 24 minutes, and 3 seconds. There have been 32,815 planes delayed and 2,758,287 total delayed minutes.

Coming in first place is Provo Airport in Utah, with an average late flight delay of 1 hour, 42 minutes, and 31 seconds. Among the 2,194 flights that arrived at this airport, an astounding 39.74% (872) faced delays – the highest percentage among all airports surveyed. Despite its small size, the airport accumulated a total of 88,526 minutes in delays, equivalent to approximately 61 days' worth of delays.

Orlando Sanford International Airport in Florida takes the second spot, with an average delay of 1 hour and 35 minutes, while Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport secures third place with an average delay of 1 hour and 29 minutes.

YVR Airport – 12 Cool Things To See In Vancouver

First Nation's art and aquarium in Vancouver

The airport is my favorite place, only because it generally means I’m going somewhere new and exciting. I’m getting to travel again. But other than that, airports are often busy, chaotic and not a lot of fun. Which is why I appreciate airports that make an effort. YVR Airport does just that.

Vancouver International Airport consistently makes it to lists of top airports in the world, as well as most sustainable airports in the world. It’s not hard to see why .

They put a lot of stock in green initiatives and have some very cool artwork and design features that make this one of the most relaxing airports I’ve visited. Vancouver just so happens to be home for me, so I’m there quite often.

12 Cool Features At YVR Airport

For a small airport, with only one main terminal, YVR Airport has a lot to see. Keep reading to find out some of the best features at the airport. Although, if you visit yourself, I can guarantee you’ll likely find even more.

YVR Airport Welcome Figures

WHERE: International Arrivals Hall

Welcome Figures at YVR airport arrival's hall

Two of the first things that greets you as you pass through the gates of international arrivals are the gigantic First Nations Welcome Figures . Although you may pass one or two other welcome figures throughout various spots in the airport – including the arrival hall at customs – these ones are harder to ignore.

And why would you want to? These beautifully carved, traditional Clayoquot statues have been here since 1986.

As well as being a reminder of the traditional Musqueam lands the airport stands on, I like to think the figures embody the friendly and welcoming nature of Vancouver, and Canada.

Jellyfish exhibit

WHERE: International Arrivals – between gates and customs

jellyfish at the Vancouver aquarium

Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park is one of the top attractions in the city. But at over $40 entry, it’s not the cheapest activity. So be sure to check out some of their exhibits for free if you’re flying…at YVR airport.

Coming in from an international flight, there’s a small jellyfish aquarium, prior to immigration . Here you can see the mesmerizing jellies floating around the blue water. Keep reading to find out about other aquarium exhibits at Vancouver Airport.

Top YVR Travel Tip: Find the Vancouver Aquarium store at YVR close to the Domestic check in desks.

Bill Reid Sculpture

WHERE: International Departures, just before security gates

Bill Reid first nation's artwork in Vancouver departure's terminal

One of the best pieces of art to find in YVR is this beautiful indigenous sculpture The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe .

Weighing 11,000 lbs, the sculpture by famous Canadian artist Bill Reid, features celebrated animals and characters from aboriginal mythology.

Local’s Tip: Like this art piece? See more of Bill Reid’s work at the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art in downtown Vancouver.

YVR Airport River and Aquarium

WHERE: International Departures – after security

River and aquarium at Vancouver International Airport

There’s a river in the airport? Sure is – and it creates a peaceful vibe even in one of the most high traffic areas . Through into International Departures, the river can be seen right after passing through the Duty Free store.

Seating all around it make for a relaxing place to sit and read a book pre-flight, and there are even a couple of bridges passing over it. Make sure to follow the river to the large aquarium at the end, found under a stunning First Nations carving.

Dresses on display

WHERE: International Departures, Gate D55 (after security)

sustainable dresses display at Vancouver's International terminal

Fashion is art too, and YVR has a few different fashion items on display for travelers to see . Be inspired to don a nice gown with some unique creations around the airport. From antique items to local fashion school designs, keep an eye out for some of these pretty frocks.

The above gown can be found in international departures around Gate D55, and is made of brown paper. This is definitely in keeping with the sustainability theme that runs through YVR airport.

WHERE: Along the moving walkway between B and C Gates (Canada Departures, after security)

model plane collection at YVR airport, Vancouver

Where better to showcase a bazillion model airplanes than an airport? OK, maybe there aren’t that many, but there sure are a lot of model airplanes here. In display cases on the way to the C Gates this is one more reason to skip the moving walkway and walk instead.

Get a closer look at a model plane from what seems to be every airline and then some. From run-of-the-mill passenger planes to rare and specialty jets, see them all in great detail . This is just part of a much larger collection, given to YVR to display, all depicting planes which have been through the airport here.

YVR Airport Yoga room

WHERE: International Departures, Upper Lounge Area, near Gate D58 (after security)

Yoga room at Vancouver International Airport

Opposite the beautiful atrium (keep reading to find out more about that), there is an upper lounge area. A side room up there is set aside for yoga. Anyone looking to do some stretches pre-flight, you can give your lululemons a workout – after all it wouldn’t be Vancouver without a little yoga .

There are additional stretching areas in the newly created Quiet Area around gate D67 (also in international departures). There’s a stretching mat, or for those who are not looking to get active you can relax in the comfy seating. As airports are a busy (and often noisy) place, this is the perfect spot for those looking for a little zen before their flight.

Rushing traveler statue

WHERE: Domestic Departures, Gate B28 (after security)

public art in Vancouver - the Flying Traveler

If there’s one thing in the airport that makes me feel seen it’s this statue. The whimsical “Flying Traveller” statue looks like it depicts one in every three visitors to the airport . Rushing frantically to get to their flight.

The art piece was commission specifically for YVR Airport, and if nothing it’ll make you smile as you pass it. Unless you’re the one running for your flight of course.

Disney models collection

Disney collection in Vancouver, Canada's airport

Hands up who else loves Disney? You don’t have to go all the way to Florida or California to see your favorite Disney character. In fact, there are literally hundreds of them on display at Vancouver International Airport.

The private collection of models, stuffed animals and every other depiction of Disney characters you can imagine will keep kids (and adults) amused while waiting for a flight . Peruse hundreds of Mickeys, or my favorite, Pluto, behind glass display cases in the Domestic departures terminal.

Healthy vending machines at YVR Airport

WHERE: Domestic, USA and International Departures – all after security

healthy vending machines at YVR airport, Vancouver

This might not excite everyone but finding somewhat healthy food in an airport is not always easy . Too quick are we to run to McDonalds or some other fast food establishment in our hurry to get to the plane. But at YVR there is a healthy vending machine, which I was excited to see while waiting for my last flight.

There’s at least one in each terminal (domestic, international and USA) and unlike the shops, they’re available 24-7. Which is great news because a lot of the shops are closed before those late night flights leave. Grab a smoothie, wrap or salad ready for your next flight.

Travel Tip: Keep an eye out for machines like these, they’re popping up in airports more and more now. My first experience was at Chicago O’Hare – they have them everywhere and the food was amazing, and super fresh.

Welcome to British Columbia sign

WHERE: Domestic departures – in front of the food court area by Gate B14

welcome to British Columbia

If nothing other than for an Insta-worthy shot, this Welcome to British Columbia sign is worth a peek if you’re close by.

Located in the Domestic departures terminal after security, it’s actually next to the kids play area . Flanked by an old school camper treehouse, it really does depict the outdoors that BC is known for.

YVR Airport Atrium

WHERE: International Departures, near gate D58 (after security)

YVR airport atrium, Vancouver, Canada

One of my new favorite areas in Vancouver International Airport is the atrium area in International departures . If the river and aquarium isn’t doing it for you, head further in and check out this new spectacular area. The focal point is the new open air atrium – complete with trees, soil and fresh air.

There are simulated nature sounds, digital glass panels showing everything from swimming salmon to bears and even little tidal pools. In a potentially chaotic place, this is a sea of calm – something YVR does very well.

YVR Airport – Not Just Any Other Airport

After traveling the world I can say I have been to some pretty dismal airports. Void of character, or just plain chaotic, most are nothing more than a place to jump on a plane. But since we all have to arrive hours before our flights, it’s places like YVR Airport in Vancouver that really make travel more enjoyable.

Relax by a serene river, appreciate some local indigenous art, or work out some pre-travel tension in the fitness areas.

YVR Airport is not just another airport, it’s a welcome change from the norm. Whether you’re arriving, departing or merely transiting through, there’s something cool to see in every part of this top Canadian airport.

If you’ve enjoyed this post, leave a comment or share using the social media buttons below. Have you been to YVR Airport before? What was your favorite feature? Feel free to share your favorite airport in the comments below.

Who would have thought that an airport could contain so many attractions. Parts seem like an art gallery/museum and are very creative. Never heard of a jellyfish exhibit at an airport though, that is very different.. I shall hopefully be flying into Vancouver airport on my next visit to see friends there so will look out for these attractions.

I’ve been to Vancouver Airport numerous times and I was unfamiliar with most of these. It dawned on me I’ve only flown domestic to and from there. However, I completely agree it’s one of my favorite airports as there’s very little chaos and easy to navigate. You’re lucky it’s your home airport. Mine is pearson.

This is an interesting post on an airport! There seem to be several things to do which would be handy in a layover too. I would love to try out the Yoga room. It must be good to do some stretching after a flight when sitting for a long time. Nice post!

I like when airports make some efforts and go beyond their function of transport hub. In a way they are not just gates to the world but also represent the city. Vancouver definitely got the memo and understood the assignment. The wooden statues are a wonderful tribute to the Canadian indigenous tribes and instantly connect a visitor to this part of Vancouvian history. The sculpture by Bill Reid or the jellyfish aquariums not only are stylish elements to enhance the airport they further add excitement for discovering more in Vancouver. I’m sold!

I love YVR! Coming home after an epic trip isn’t always easy, but arriving at YVR does help because it’s so pretty and welcoming. You’ve noted so many great art pieces and little mini museum exhibits, which I appreciate more than rows of shops. I haven’t yet visited the yoga room so I will have to remember that for next time

Spectacular! I would never have thought that an airport could have so many cute and interesting things in its enclosure. It’s funny because with so many pieces of varied art, it almost looks like a gallery. No doubt this airport will not be difficult to spend the time of a longer layover!

I must admit that I don’t really notice the airports when I travel – I’m too focused on my destination and get exploring! It impresses me that they’d put such an effort into so many things to see. I would imagine it’s perfect for a layover though – more than just overpriced food and shops!

I generally loathe airports. We love travelling but hate all the faff as well as spending hours hanging around at the airport with nothing to do. So it was like a breath of fresh air to read about Vancouver. What a cool place! There are loads of things to see and do – art, sculpture, nature (how brilliant to have a river!), even yoga – I think we would actually enjoy spending time here. Other airports should take note!

What an original blog post, loved reading it! I know there are few interesting airports in the world such as Changi in Singapore but didn’t know Vancouver was one of them. The art installations look incredible and I love aquariums and could spend hours there so for once I wouldn’t mind a long layover in an airport!

Will be flying into Vancouver in July for a couple of days then onto a cruise to Alaska. So excited to tour the airport.

Amazing, I’ve heard great things about the Alaska cruise, I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time. Enjoy your visit to Vancouver

These New Airports Are Making Bucket-List Destinations More Accessible

T he most difficult leg of a trip—especially on long international journeys —is making that last flight connection or lengthy ground transfer to your final destination. Those final couple hours in transit, when the effects of jet lag are rearing up and patience is running thin, can be laborious and time-consuming, but are often necessary in order to reach some of the world's most remote destinations .

Now, a new crop of well-located airports seek to make some of these historically out-of-the-way regions more accessible to international travel. Forget about the shuttle bus or puddle-jumper flight: these eight new airports—which have either just opened or are currently under construction–will make it that much easier than ever to reach bucket-list destinations around the world.

Tulum, Mexico

Thanks to the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, it is easier than ever for international travelers to reach the seaside escape of Tulum , one of Mexico's most popular tourist hubs. The airport officially opened to domestic flights in December 2023 and will welcome international airlines beginning March 28, 2024. Multiple routes from American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue, and Spirit will launch throughout the year. Previously, travelers would typically need to fly into Cancún and drive about 80 miles south to access Tulum, a two-hour road trip that the new facility will mercifully eliminate for many passengers.

Siem Reap, Cambodia

In November 2023, Cambodia inaugurated a brand new airport in Siem Reap , the gateway city to Angkor Wat, the UNESCO-listed ancient temple complex that’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The new airport, which replaces an older Siem Reap facility built in the 1930s, is about 25 miles east of the Angkor Wat temple complex. That’s further away from the archeological site than the original airport, which sat just over three miles away, but the new airport will make it easier for more tourists to access Angkor Wat . Thanks to its size, it can handle larger planes used on nonstop international flights and accommodate up to seven million passengers annually, with plans to grow that capacity to a whopping 40 million people per year by 2040.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Starting this summer, visiting the candy-colored buildings perched high above the azure waters of the Amalfi Coast will be less of a headache for travelers. That's because the popular tourist spot in Southern Italy is finally getting its own commercial airport. The town is converting what used to be a military airport, and later a private airport, to a facility to be used by everyday travelers. The first flights are set to take off on July 11 and will be operated by Spanish airline Volotea, with routes from Nantes, France, and Cagliri, Sardinia , according to CNN . However, the complete renovation is not scheduled to be complete until 2026, and other airlines and routes will be added along the way.

Nuuk, Greenland

In one of the country’s most significant moves to enhance tourism , Greenland is debuting a major expansion of the airport in its capital city, Nuuk. The new airport’s runway will be double the size of the old one—big enough to handle nonstop flights from destinations in North America and Europe . That means much more simplified travel for international visitors, who would previously have to transit through the small town of Kangerlussuaq. The new terminal building is expected to be operational by May 2024, with the full facility up and running by the end of November.

The “Nature Island” of the Caribbean— Dominica —started construction on its first international airport in late 2023. It’s set to be one of the island’s largest construction projects ever. When it’s completed by 2026, the new airport will replace the current regional facility that has just three gates. By contrast, the international airport is slated to serve more than 20 airlines from the Caribbean, Europe, and North America, each of which will be able to fly directly to Dominica, the country’s prime minister said in 2022 , making it easier for far-flung tourists to access the island without needing to make a connection.

Dominica is one of our Best Places to Go in North America & the Caribbean in 2024 , part of our global guide to the Best Places to Go in 2024 —find more travel inspiration here .

Western Sydney, Australia

‌A second airport in Australia’s capital is set to bring a host of advantages when it starts operations in 2026. The Western Sydney airport, also called Nancy-Bird Walton airport, is currently being constructed further inland from Sydney's current airport. For locals who live farther on the outskirts, that means not having to trek all the way into eastern Sydney to catch your flight. For visitors, the airport’s location on the western edge of the city will be an ideal gateway for travelers wanting to explore the nearby Blue Mountains National Park , known for its striking cliffs, waterfalls, and unique sandstone formations. Plus, it could mean less crowded airport spaces, too. The facility on the opposite side of the city will also take some capacity pressure off of the current Sydney airport: Western Sydney airport will be able to handle 10 million passengers a year when it launches.

Peru's Sacred Valley

For the more than 1.5 million travelers who visit Machu Picchu every year, a simpler transit option will be available starting in 2026: Chinchero airport, located smack dab in Peru’s Sacred Valley. Currently, international visitors to Machu Picchu usually must fly into Lima and connect to Cusco, which doesn’t accommodate many international flights and sits about 46 miles away from the archaeological site. They then must take a train the rest of the way. Chinchero airport will be able to serve nonstop flights from North America and major cities throughout South America and act as a direct gateway to Machu Picchu. The project is not without its controversies , however. Critics of the Chinchero airport say its construction is endangering ancient Incan archaeological sites, as activists voice concerns that the noise pollution from the planes and subsequent traffic will cause irreparable damage to the fragile environment.

Gelephu Mindfulness City, Bhutan

The Himalayan Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan has announced it’s building a second international airport as part of an ambitious project to create a brand new modern city from scratch. The sustainable community, called Gelephu Mindfulness City , will see the construction of a new 1,000-square-kilometer economic and tourist hub near the current town of Gelephu, which sits on the country’s southwestern border with India . In addition to the new international airport, the large city will feature a new university, spiritual and cultural centers, and healthcare facilities. Although there is not yet a set date for the completion of the airport, when it opens it will be an important new option for tourists wishing to explore the southern and western regions of Bhutan, home to attractions like Royal Manas National Park and Phrumsengla National Park.

What are airport lounges?

How to get in to airport lounges, travel cards that give you lounge access, which banks offer airport lounge access, how to get airport lounge access recapped.

Everybody loves a relaxing vacation, but the chaotic nature of an airport terminal can induce anxiety in even the most zen of travelers. Loudspeaker announcements, beeping golf carts and crying children create a cacophony — wouldn’t it be nice to wait for your flight in a peaceful environment instead? Enter airport lounges.

Hanging out in an airport lounge before a trip or on a long layover can enhance your travel experience by a mile. And these havens aren't just for those flying in fancy cabins.

Airport lounges are quiet areas inside the terminal where passengers can relax before a flight or during a layover, eat snacks, work using the lounge’s Wi-Fi network, and sometimes even shower. Typically only paying members, passengers flying in business or first class, or cardholders of certain travel cards are allowed access. Here’s how to get in to airport lounges.

» Learn more: The best airline credit cards right now

There are six ways to get access to airport lounges.

1. Fly in a premium cabin

One of the most reliable ways to get airport lounge access is to fly in first or business class (typically on international routes and select transcontinental flights). This may sound like an expensive way to access a lounge, but if you purchase your flight with airline miles, your ticket still grants you entry to a lounge — either the one for your carrier or for one of its partners.

2. Reach elite status with an airline loyalty program

Frequent flyers are typically rewarded for their loyalty, and if you fly enough with one carrier or multiple carriers in the same alliance, you can enter airline lounges when flying on select routes.

For example, Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro or Platinum elite members of the American Airlines AAdvantage program can enter an Admirals Club on departure or arrival on qualifying international flights operated by American or Oneworld partners, even if they fly economy — and they can bring one guest with them.

Additionally, if you reach status with an alliance, which usually requires earning status with a specific airline, you’re able to get free airport lounge access when flying on a member airline.

3. Purchase a day pass

Another option for accessing an airport lounge is to pay for it.

United Airlines sells one-time passes that allow you to enter a United Club a single time, either before your flight or on a layover. Alaska Airlines also sells single-entry passes to passengers wishing to enter an Alaska Lounge. American Airlines sells day passes that are valid for 24 hours and allow you to enter multiple Admirals Clubs within that period.

Here’s how much airline lounge access will cost you with the following carriers:

Alaska — $60.

American — $79 or 7,900 AAdvantage miles.

United — $59.

Delta Air Lines no longer sells single-visit passes to Delta Sky Clubs, and annual membership is available to Medallion members only, meaning holding certain credit cards is the only way to access Delta lounges for general SkyMiles members (more on that later).

4. Purchase an annual membership

If you’re a frequent traveler, buying an annual lounge membership instead of repeatedly buying day passes can make sense. Of course, the value will depend on how often you fly with that specific airline.

Let’s take a look at how much an annual airline lounge membership will cost for individual, non-elite status flyers.

Alaska — $550.

American — $850 or 85,000 AAdvantage miles.

Delta — $695 or 69,500 SkyMiles.

United — $650 or 85,000 MileagePlus miles.

So, for example, if you’re going to fly round-trip with United six times in a year (12 individual flights), buying a day pass to the lounge each time would cost you $708 total ($59 x 12); an annual membership at $650 would be a better deal.

5. Present your military ID

Sometimes, being a military member can get you access to airport lounges. For example, the USO airport lounges are designed for active-duty service members and their families who are stationed around the globe.

Additionally, some airline lounges, like Admirals Clubs, offer complimentary access to U.S. military personnel in uniform traveling on American Airlines flights. United also provides complimentary access to U.S. military personnel at its United Club locations.

6. Open a credit card with airport lounge access

Many premium cards on the market offer some kind of lounge access to cardmembers. Premium co-branded airline cards typically offer access to the respective airlines’ lounges, and bank cards typically offer access to their own lounges and to lounges in the Priority Pass network.

Let’s take a look at some of the best credit cards with lounge access.

Credit card memberships, elite status and lounge passes can transport you from a chaotic airport terminal to a serene lounge, making your next connection less stressful.

Memorial Day 2024: Atlanta airport prepares for busy travel rush

Atlanta airport prepares for memorial day.

Officials expect around 2.5 million people to travel through Atlanta during the busy Memorial Day holiday period.

ATLANTA - Leaders at the world's busiest airport are preparing for things to get a lot busier when the Memorial Day travel rush kicks into gear next week.

The unofficial start to summer and the summer travel season is expected to bring millions of travelers through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The airport is estimating that 2.5 million passengers will head to and from Atlanta from Wednesday, May 22 to May 29.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines expects nearly 3 million customers - a 5% increase from 2023. United Airlines is planning to fly more than half a million people a day.

AAA says some of the top destinations this year include Orlando, Florida, Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale, southern California, Miami, Denver, and Boston.

One thing that's thankfully not too much higher than 2023 is flight prices. AAA says they've only seen a slight bump from 2023.

Airport officials are encouraging travelers to check parking options before heading for their flights.

Like every year, they also encourage you to get to the airport early - 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours for international travel.

While MARTA's Airport Station remains closed for renovations , the transit authority expects the station to be reopened days before the big travel rush starts.
