Boulder bluegrass icon Hot Rize returns to roots

Nick Forster talks about his bluegrass band’s Boulder base

Colorado is well known for its folksy bluegrass scene. Bands like Leftover Salmon, The String Cheese Incident and Yonder Mountain String Band sell out shows all along the Front Range, and Colorado is also home to the yearly, highly-successful RockyGrass festival that brings together musicians from all over the states.

But it’s the well-established banjo-pickin’ members of Hot Rize who helped give Colorado its reputation as one of the biggest states for bluegrass in the nation. Started in 1978, Hot Rize — Tim O’Brien, Pete Wernick, Bryan Sutton and Nick Forster — paved the way for Boulder’s music scene as they struggled to find venues at which to play.

Forster, who plays electric bass, lap-steel pedal, mandolin and banjo and provides vocals for the band, says he and his bandmates had to help create a bluegrass music scene in Boulder.

“Ultimately we had to break a lot of new ground,” Forster says. “Frankly, there were not a lot of opportunities for bluegrass bands to perform in and around Boulder when we started. So it was an interesting period of time where we had a hard time getting local bars to sort of trust that bluegrass music would be something that could be popular. For example, we went up to Niwot and rented the Grange Hall and put on some shows ourselves in a venue that we rented ourselves, which created an opportunity for us to just have shows. So we are in some ways, I guess, pioneers of that scene.”

Hot Rize gets its name from an ingredient found in Martha White flour and cornbread mix. Forster says bandmate Wernick decided on the name.

“Pete Wernick had been in a band called Country Cookin back in New York and was very conscious and very aware of the bluegrass music world and also very sensitive to marketing ideas,” Forster says. “He was also the only guy I knew who always carried a pen and a pad, so he always had some way to capture whatever ideas came to him.”

Forster says the idea came from the strong influence that Martha White flour had on bluegrass music of the day, after the famous bluegrass band, Flat and Scruggs, performed the theme song and endorsed the down-home country cooking of Martha White flour products.

“So that was his inspiration and luckily he had the pad handy and he wrote it down and it all worked,” Forster says.

After years of successful records and touring, Hot Rize disbanded in 1990 as the members pursued solo careers. But when member Charles Sawtelle was tragically diagnosed with leukemia, Forster says the band decided to reunite in support of not only their band member, but close friend.

“As Charles was going through his treatment and all of the care involved in treating that disease, we realized it was a big morale booster for him to occasionally have Hot Rize shows for him to play, and so we started playing more of those just to make sure he always had something on his calendar to look forward to,” he says.

Forster says he remembers a reunion show at the Boulder Theater that Sawtelle got to play — one of his last shows.

Sawtelle passed away at the age of 52 during an unsuccessful bone marrow transplant. Forster says the loss of Sawtelle inspired the band to continue playing together.

“Once Charles died we were asked to put some tribute shows together honoring Charles’ memory, and that was the reason for another batch of reunion shows,” he says. “Since that time, we have now for 10 years, been asked to perform more, and we were interested in performing more, so we did.”

As Hot Rize gets ready to return to Boulder, Forster waxes nostalgic about his old stomping grounds.

“What’s so exciting for us is that it’s very rare for us to play in Boulder, and Boulder is really where the band took shape and we have such a deep history here,” he says. “This is the only time we’re playing in Boulder this year and we’re back at the Boulder Theater, which feels like home for us.”

“To tell you the truth, we’re spending a couple of days later this week looking at some new material and exploring our options with the goal of recording a new record in mind,” he says. “It’s sort of the natural expansion of us having a good time playing music together.”

With so much history to Hot Rize, Forster says the most important thing to him and the members of the band are enjoying the company of friends and fans.

“The opportunity to play music with other people is really just about having a conversation,” he says. “I’m lucky enough to play lots of instruments, but I do them all in service to the song and the circumstance. Everybody who plays music is after the same thing: That moment of magic where you’re all playing together and you’re able to elevate the song to this higher level, and that’s why we do it.”

Hot Rize | Live in Kansas 1986 | Review

Article contributed by dylan muhlberg | published on tuesday, november 19, 2013.

hot rize tour dates

If the Colorado Bluegrass Community wasn’t already tried as strong, this month represented a milestone for community support. Last month’s “100 Year Flood” damaged and displaced thousands in Boulder County. The worst was the devastation in Lyons, Colorado, home of the Planet Bluegrass Ranch and much of the Colorado Music Roots community. The Ranch hosts at least two huge annual festivals onsite that after 40 years of legendary performances have built a loyal following of devotees nationwide. No doubt Colorado’s original Bluegrass band Hot Rize is a cornerstone of the RockyGrass Festival held at the end of each July at Planet Bluegrass Ranch. After the property was left literally underwater, caretaker and owner Craig Ferguson was left with perhaps the biggest challenge of his life. In another part of Lyons, Hot Rize ’s “Dr. Banjo” Mr. Pete Wernick was left with plenty of his own rebuilding from the flood. Seeing the need for relief and charity much larger than Lyons and its music community, Pete and the rest of Hot Rize organized a hugely successful flood relief benefit called “ Picking up the Pieces .” Not only did the event feature a start-studded bluegrass bill featuring Hot Rize, Jeff Austin, Billy Nershi, Andy Hall, Chris Pandolfi, and many others, but also all proceeds went straight to the Colorado Flood Relief. In the end, the event raised over $40,000. Additionally, the benefit offered the flood distraught tickets for just five bucks to the exciting event that was held at CU Boulder’s Macky Auditorium . Hot Rize has been a vital part of Colorado and the United States bluegrass canon since the late 1970s. Pete Wernick, Nick Forster (banjoman), Tim O’Brien (mandolinman) and the late Charles Sawtelle (guitarman) created a working chronology of the genre through any given evening’s performance, paying homage to the music of Flatt and Scruggs while also poking fun at the Honky-Tonk Country that hybridized with folk tradition to create bluegrass. The Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers segment of each Hot Rize show is the contrast reminding the audience that Americana is limitless (even if country music can come off a little square to some.)In light of the recent benefit show , I wanted to highlight a very important archival addition to David Grisman’s Acoustic Oasis webpage. Mr. Grisman started the site a few years back in hopes of preserving and sharing important string, jazz, Americana, folk, and bluegrass music that might be otherwise lost. His web archive is an invaluable treasure that any fan of Americana must support. One of the coolest releases on the site is a 1986 Hot Rize recording from Kansas, featuring the original band with Sawtelle in the height of their touring popularity. The show was recorded in Winfield High School Auditorium, no doubt to a tiny local’s audience. The set is a perfect showcase of what the Hot Rize Band came to represent, a meshing of Flatt/Scruggs/Monroe/Williams with Colorado Newgrass flair. In 1986, the band released their first studio album in five year called Traditional Ties. A perfect mix of originals and standards, much of this material would become a permanent fixture of every Hot Rize performance thereafter. No doubt Bill Monroe’s “Blue Night” was a fitting way to begin that evening’s performance. Showcasing the sweet four-part harmonies that set the quartet in the legitimate category of “traditional,” though they always play with a sort of progressiveness even on the standards. “Hard Pressed” and “Walk The Way the Wind Blows”, both Tim O’Brien originals off of the Traditional Ties record, showed the youngest member’s strength as a stellar songwriter and the perfect channel of Lester Flatt’s unmistakable vocal style. “Radio Boogie” the title track off of their 1981 album was a crowd pleaser by that point, and topically fits right in with any canonical bluegrass treasure. After a rippin’ rendition of “Leather Briches” the boys one by one saunter offstage into their “Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers” alter egos. An always-welcome culty part of every Hot Rize performance, the fo-band dressed in their country-star glitz worked their way through golden gems like Jimmie Rodgers’ “In The Jailhouse Now” and Ernest Tubb’s “I Know My Baby Loves Me.” It’s plain to see that through the humor of the Trailblazers segment, they really are paying musical homage to bluegrasses alter ego, and trying their best to play faithfully. When Hot Rize shoos Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers offstage they break out Tim O’Brien’s brilliant composition “Land’s End” which has since been acknowledged an instrumental masterpiece. A couple of bar-burner standards closed out the strong performance in the Midwest from almost thirty years ago.  Thanks to David Grisman’s Acoustic Oasis , fans can revisit this important never before released recording. Hot Rize continues to carry their legacy to this day. They’re well on their way to putting out a new album and gigging enough to keep fans and themselves from going through withdrawal. This classic recording reveals the roots of this incredible unit that means more to the community now than ever. Please continue to support Hot Rize music, Colorado Flood Relief , and David Grisman’s Acoustic Oasis web archive.

Hot Chip is a five piece indie-electro band from London, UK. They’ve released five studio albums including “Coming on Strong” (2004), “The Warning” (2006), “Made in the Dark” (2008), “One Life Stand” (2010) and “In Our Heads” (2012), and have been nominated for a Mercury Prize and a Grammy.

They are a band of multi-instrumentalists, who work complex rhythms and layered effects into their driving sound. The line up since they formed in 2000 has been Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard on vocals, and splitting synthesizers, guitar, percussion and piano between them; Owen Clarke on guitar, bass, synthesizers and percussion; Al Doyle on guitar, backing vocals, synthesizers, percussion, bass, flugelhorn and steel pans; and Felix Martin on drum machines, synthesizers, programming.

After getting signed with Moshi Moshi in 2003, they released their debut LP “Coming On Strong”, before moving on to DFA Records in the US and EMI in the UK to put out their breakout second album, “The Warning”. With “The Warning”, Hot Chip gained mainstream appeal, shimmying their way up the charts with the singles “Boy From School” and “Over and Over”, both of which reached UK top forty. The album made the shortlist for the 2006 Nationwide Mercury Prize and was Mixmag's Album of the Year.

The release of “Made in the Dark” in 2007 saw their reputation swell even further with the club-hopping classic, “Ready for the Floor” getting to number six on the UK Singles Top 75 and being nominated for the Grammy for Best Dance Recording.

The follow up, “One Life Stand”, had a more soulful, earnest feel to it, embracing a kind of lush simplicity in lieu of the upbeat complexities of their earlier works (“I Feel Better” was apparently written by Goddard inspired by Susan Boyle’s Britain’s Got Talent performance of “I Dreamed a Dream”).

Their Latest, “In Our Heads” snapped back to the party vibes, albeit more pared-back, faster, dancier and lacking any pretension, and debuted at No. 14 on the UK Albums Chart.

On top of the foundation set with their albums, Hot Chip forays into the club scene with extended house mixes, and Joe Goddard’s remixes of the likes of the Dirty Projectors, Disclosure, Breach and Nneka, as well as his side project The 2 Bears with producer Raf Rundell.

Live reviews

What is there to say about Hot Chip that hasn't already been said and isn't already widely known?

They've been at it for longer than most of us are aware and ever since we've started paying attention they've been blowing us away - whether it's recorded or in person.

Hungry Child was definitely needed and warmly welcomed. I mean, if you're going to throw it in between Flutes and Boy From School...you obviously think it's gonna fit.

Recorded you get the soft subtleties that Hot Chip can bring with as much aplomb as their hard-hitting, dance-oriented chart busters.

Hot Chip are an undeniable force, festival stalwarts in the UK, they can manipulate their sound to fill the largest venues.

And that's where Elsewhere comes into play.

Elsewhere is that beautiful combination of big enough to draw huge acts, but small enough to make it intimate.

This catered to the fist song of the encore "Look At Where We Are" - a tender and considerably slower offering from the bands 2021 magnum opus In Our Heads.

Hot Chip have been on/off my favourite band for at least 8 years, while Elsewhere has been my fave for a solid 2 years (since it opened).

Last night, both solidified their positions with grace, poise, style, and some fucking banging tunes.

To Hot Chip and Elsewhere - I thank you.

(Oh they also covered "Sabotage" which is pretty cool!)

They can do it on the weekend in Manchester but could they do it on a cold rainy Tuesday night in Nottingham? Yeah, pretty much.

Playing a near capacity Rock City they played a tight 90 minute set that was equal parts atmospheric and groovy. The show was a good mix of songs from their recent album 'Why make sense?' ('Huarache Lights' being a strong set opener) as well as hits from across their other 5 albums ('Ready for the floor' and 'Over and over' being their biggest and well received songs).

They also had time for one or two of their lesser known songs ('Hold on' for example) which was nice. I would have preferred if they had played more from 'The Warning' (as I've been led to believe they do normally) since this was my first time seeing them (various alcohol related incidents have prevented me previously) but there's always next time I suppose.

Finally, the set ended with their cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'Dancing in the Dark' (with a snippet of LCD Soundsystem's 'All my Friends' thrown in for good measure) and I can safely say it was pretty fantastic endpoint. Springsteen and synths is a winning combo. My main complaint for it was that I had work the next day so I could only get sorta-drunk rather than the full arms in the air drunk I would have preferred for a gig as great as this.

The dance-oriented set from Hot Chip perfectly captured everything that made Hot Chip so great. Their funky, indie electronic sound is fresh, groovy, catchy, and trippy all at once.

Drawing influence from contemporary acts like MGMT, Animal Collective, and Daft Punk, Hot Chip have perfectly melded their artistic vision with dancey, electronic goodness, and it all translates extremely well in a live format.

Impossibly good, the ear candy melody of "Boy From School" creates an 80s new wave, intense atmosphere. I felt like I was in an action scene from an old science fiction film, but the drum beat under the twisted arpeggios keeps me tied to reality, dancing frantically.

Hot Chip has mastered jamming with electronic instruments and classic gear. Their songs are flowy, urban sounding, groovy and creative. As the vocals some in on "Boy From School", the emotional vibe that the vocals were giving off brought a real nice touch of humanity to the electronic jam.

We were all dancing along and singing to the repetitive lyrics, and I don't remember having so much fun, in a long time. The people around me were enjoyable to be around, and the music just continued to gain energy. Hot Chip is really on a different level.

Indie darlings Hot Chip recently played a storming set at the BBC6 Music Festival where they teased fans with the prospect of new material during an intense, cinematic performance of dance-heavy 'Huarache Lights'. One of the most anticipated bands of the festival, the lights dimmed before Hot Chip's own display illuminated the stage and covered the audience in strobe.

Having not released an album since 2012, their return to the circuit is very much overdue. Reminding the crowds why their personal brand of indie/electro is so popular, a perfect rendition of 'One Life Stand' keeps the whole venue jumping in unison. Early hit 'Over & Over' sounds timeless along with fan favourite 'Ready For The Floor'. The electro-harp chords of 'I Feel Better' makes the entire audience erupt in cheers as they play this ethereal, Daft Punk inspired piece of electro.

Hot Chip are proven innovators of genre and their live show is further indication to the level of skill that the band obtains. The whole experience is slick, polished and immersive as you lose yourself within the distorted dance beats of 'Why Make Sense?'.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH FUN!!! The pairing of Hot Chip and TO’s Holy F—k was a brilliant pairing and a pleasant surprise! I knew of Holy F before, but didn’t know they were opening for HC!!! Alexis Taylor was great when he came out to sing a song with the band too!! HC’s performance was just great!! Super energetic, colourful, and very entertaining!! LOVED the dance sequence in “Flutes”, and their version of Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” was AWESOME!!!! That was definitely the highlight for me!!! They fulfilled a dream of mine because I never thought I’d get to enjoy Sabotage live now that MCA has passed away. I got the setlist after the show too, and still am Super STOKED to have seen them live!! I’d totally recommend them and without hesitation I would see them again!! The ambiance of the whole night was like a club!!!

Been a fan of Hot Chip for years, and year after year, these guys just BRING IT. They have fun, with no false pretense, which enables the crowd to share in the moment with the band. They play a nice mix of old and new to cater to all fans, as well as mixing up the sound of the songs to keep things interesting. Bring your dancing shoes!

Amazing concert, one of the best for me in 2019. The band was supercharged and the energy spilled into the crowd non-stop. The sound was well done, people were dancing and singing, we had such a great time! Loved it.

Awesome concert! It was all I expected and more. Loved the drums and how they get to be protagonist even in a concert with so many synthesizers. Great venue too It was my first time at the Observatory North Park.

Hot chip put on a great show! Highly recommend seeing them if you're a fan of any level. The way they ended the show was the best, (SPOILER: they cover Dancing in the dark and All My Friends by LCD SoundSystem)

Albert Hall is fucking hot!!! There's dancing and getting a little sweaty. Then there's dancing in a rainforest.

Get some fans. Aldi might be selling them soon, so you should grab yourself a bargain.
