If you are a beginner, then find an expert guide or an experienced person. It will help you in safely completing. Only an expert guide can explain the latest guidelines issued by the government. For example, the government banned night camping at hill to maintain eco-balance. So the only option left is guest houses under the forest department.

Before planning for this trek, start working on your strength and eat healthy food. Check whether your body is flexible enough to accept the changes. Develop an environment of trekking at your home and practice daily. It will work as a prevention from possible injury.

Comfort comes first when it comes to trekking to hill. Wearing comfortable shoes helps in completing the trek easily. Change your shoes immediately if you feel any discomfort that can not be avoidable. Avoid shoes that can cause blisters.

Commonly, we forget to keep our favorite pair of shocks while backpacking. You are committing a mistake if you think comfortable shoes are enough to complete. So once you finalize the trekking shoe, pair up the right shocks with them. Check the material like fabric and necessary properties such as sweatproof and waterproof etc.

It is obvious that for an exciting trek, willpower and leg strength play a major role. Add bench press, squats, and other strength-building exercises to your daily schedule. Apart from leg strength, start working on willpower. Once you develop these elements, the Trek will become an exaggerating experience for you.

Every doctor suggests that walking is beneficial for our health. It keeps us physically fit and prepares us to map paths on the trek. Once you are a pro at walking, start practicing walking harder for trek. Develop an environment like Trek and become an excellent trekker.

If you think walking, exercising, and determination are enough, then let me tell you it is not. You will not get a complete idea of how trekking feels like. Whenever you practice walking, carry a backpack filled with the necessary trek items. Check how much weight you can lift comfortably.

Also, choose a backpack whose straps you can easily adjust while walking. After training, you will get used to carrying a backpack.

The use of lightweight walking poles while walking reduces pressure on your legs and thighs. It works as an additional leg that distributes the weight of the entire body. Apart from this, it has multiple uses, For example, keeping aside the vegetation and many others.

Water is the basic need of the human body. We have always been taught by our elders that keep water with ourselves. Trek drains all your energy and demands the correct fluid level in the body. Climbing up the hill results in increased breath, loss of fluid, and increased heartbeat. So, drinking the right amount of fluid helps in balancing all of the above results. Due to lifestyle changes, we forget to take enough water throughout the day. So keep your body hydrated by sipping a small amount of water at different time intervals throughout the day.

Your eating habits determine how long you will go. Your body demands more food when it comes to trekking up the hill. Practice eating a small and healthy meal at different points of the day. The best options to take on the trek are fruits that help in increasing your energy level. Avoid eating fried snacks and other unhealthy food items.

Fitness is the key to win against challenges that we encounter throughout the trek. You have to invest your valuable time and energy to reach the trekking point, and fitness makes it easier for you. Fitness allows you to squeeze out every drop of happiness and joy. All the above tips will help you in getting a lifetime trekking experience.

The safety of women while trekking has been a topic of concern for many years. However, it is essential to understand that Triund Trek is relatively safe for girls who take necessary precautions.

The trail is well-marked and frequented by trekkers throughout the year, providing adequate company and assistance if needed. Many female travelers have successfully completed the trek without any hassle.

However, it's always crucial to know your surroundings and be cautious when traveling alone or in a group. It's advisable to travel with trusted companions or join organized groups led by experienced guides.

Additionally, carrying basic self-defense tools like pepper spray can also add an extra layer of security during the journey. Being mindful of local customs and dressing appropriately will help avoid unwanted attention.

Triund Trek is generally safe for women and couples as long as they remain vigilant and take appropriate measures towards their safety during the journey.

One of the common questions that many travelers ask before boarding on a trekking adventure is whether there are toilet facilities available along the way. When it comes to Triund Trek, this question often pops up as well. So, let's dive into the answer.

Firstly, it's important to note that Triund Trek is a moderately difficult trek and requires around 6-7 hours of uphill walking. Along the trail, you will come across several temporary stalls selling refreshments such as water and snacks but there aren't any permanent structures with toilets.

However, at Magic View Cafe - which is located at around 2/3rd distance from McLeodGanj - they have built some basic restrooms for their customers. It's also possible to use these restrooms even if you're not dining at the cafe by paying a small fee.

But once you cross Magic View Cafe towards Triund Hill Top or further down towards Laka Got Glacier or Indrahar Pass Base Camps, there won't be any toilet facilities available. Therefore, it's advisable to carry your own tissue papers/wipes and maintain hygiene by disposing them carefully in garbage bins only when you reach back civilization.

While toilet facilities may be limited during your trip on Triund Trek – being prepared can ensure that it doesn't become an issue during your journey!

First of all, it's important to have the right gear for the trip. You'll need sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, warm clothes as temperatures can drop significantly at night and sunscreen lotion to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Secondly, make sure you carry enough water and snacks to keep yourself hydrated and energized throughout the trip. There are several shops along the way where you can find basic supplies like water bottles, chocolates and biscuits.

Thirdly, it's advisable to start early in the morning so that you have enough time to reach Triund before sunset. The trail gets crowded during peak season, so starting early will also help avoid traffic jams on narrow paths.

Fourthly, be prepared for sudden weather changes as mountain weather can be unpredictable. Carry raincoats or ponchos if there's a chance of rain.

Lastly but most importantly - respect nature! Do not litter or harm wildlife in any way. Carry your trash with you until you find dustbins or designated waste disposal areas.

Triund trek is a popular destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers. It offers stunning views of the Dhauladhar range, making it an ideal spot for camping and trekking. There are two ways to reach Triund: one is from McLeod Ganj, which is shorter but steeper, while the other is from Bhagsu Nag, which takes longer but has a gradual ascent.

The first route starts in McLeod Ganj and goes through Dharamkot village. From there, you'll follow a steep trail that winds its way up to Triund. This route covers around 7 km and can be completed in about 4-5 hours by experienced trekkers.

The second option involves starting at Bhagsu Nag village and taking the more gradual trail towards Triund. This route covers approximately 9 km and takes about 6-7 hours to complete. Although it's longer than the first route, it's less strenuous on your legs.

Both routes offer scenic views of valleys covered with tall trees as well as snow-capped mountains looming in the distance. You'll also come across several tea stalls along the way where you can grab some snacks or refreshments before continuing your journey.

Regardless of which option you choose for your Triund Trek adventure, make sure to wear comfortable clothes suitable for hiking purposes – including sturdy shoes with good grip!

When planning for a trek, one of the primary questions that come to mind is the cost. The total cost of Triund Trek INR 800-1000 depends on various factors like travel expenses, accommodation, food and guide charges.

The base camp for the trek is Mcleodganj, which can be reached by bus or taxi from nearby cities. The transportation cost varies depending on your location.

Accommodation options at McLeodganj range from budget hostels to luxury hotels. You can choose according to your preference and budget. However, most trekkers prefer staying in tents during the Triund trek itself.

Food prices differ as well; you may bring snacks or buy them along the way. For meals, there are small shops offering Maggi noodles and tea while walking up towards Triund Hill.

For guide services charges depend on whether you want an experienced local guide or not.

It's important to note that this estimated cost does not include any additional gear rental fees or souvenirs purchased during the trip.

Solo travel is a growing trend, and many adventure enthusiasts prefer to explore the world alone. However, when it comes to trekking in remote wilderness areas like Triund, safety should be your top priority.

While traveling solo has its benefits such as independence and freedom, it can also pose some risks. If you are planning a solo trip to Triund Trek, there are several things you need to consider before setting off on your journey.

Firstly, make sure you have enough experience and fitness level for this trek because it's not easy for beginners. You will be walking through rugged terrain with steep inclines and declines that require stamina and endurance.

Secondly, always inform someone about your itinerary including the estimated arrival time at different places so that they can raise an alarm if something goes wrong.

Thirdly, carry all essential items required during the trip such as water bottles, food supplies (snacks), medical kit etc., which will ensure that you are safe throughout your journey.

Lastly but most importantly do not take shortcuts or try new paths without proper guidance from locals or professional guides who know the area well. Remember that even experienced trekkers get lost sometimes too!

By following these tips for safety during Triund Trek Solo Traveling Adventure provides great opportunities for self-discovery while allowing one's adventurous spirit soar amidst nature's beauty!

Taking alcohol to Triund trek is strictly prohibited and is considered illegal. The reason behind this prohibition is that the trail passes through a wildlife sanctuary, which means that any kind of littering or disturbance can have a negative impact on the environment.

Moreover, consuming alcohol at high altitudes can lead to dehydration and altitude sickness. This can be dangerous as it may cause nausea, headaches, dizziness and even unconsciousness.

In addition to that, carrying heavy bottles of alcohol will add extra weight to your backpacks making it difficult for you to carry them throughout the trek. It's important to keep in mind that the focus should be on enjoying nature while keeping it clean and preserving its beauty rather than indulging in alcoholic beverages.

Therefore, we strongly advise our trekkers not to bring any kind of alcoholic drinks during their trip. Instead, they are encouraged to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other fluids such as tea or lemonade offered by locals along the way.

A Guide to the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj + Insider Tips (2024)

Triund Trek in McLeodGanj

If you’re planning on doing the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj, Dharamshala, you have come to the right place!

McLeodCanj, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, is most famous for being the home of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet. This town is close to the city of Dharamshala (a flight or night bus away from Delhi ) and tourists from all over the world come here to learn more about Buddhism and Tibetan culture.

There are plenty of interesting things to do in McLeodGanj , and this town is also home to one of the best Himalayan treks to do on your own: the trek to Triund Hill.

In this guide, you will find everything you need to know if you’re planning on trekking to Triund. You can hike to Triund in 1 or 2 days . I did this hike by myself in one day, but it is also possible to camp at Triund and hike back the next day, but more about this later!

How to do the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj

View on the way to Tirund Hill in McLeodGanj

There are two hiking trails to reach Triund Hill, and they both start in Bhagsu, which is a 20 to 30-minute walk from McLeodGanj.

While nearly everyone takes the easiest trail to hike to Triund and Back, I highly recommend making a loop and taking the easy trail to hike up and the difficult trail to hike back down.

I did it the other way around and took the difficult trail to hike up. This was my favourite one, as I only encountered two other hikers and found the landscape more beautiful here.

This guide describes how to hike up the easier way and hike back down the more difficult way. It speaks for itself that you can also do the hike the other way around as I did, though.

Tip: The way to Triund can easily be found using Maps.me. This app comes in particularly handy for the more difficult trail, as the path isn’t always as straightforward here.

Do you need a guide to hike to Triund?

Although you can hire a guide to do this trek, this is not necessary and many people hike independently. The path is easy to follow and the hike is not too difficult.

However, if you don’t have much hiking experience and would prefer to do the hike with a guide, you can book the guided Triund trek on GetYourGuide. This trek takes 2 days and includes a guide, camping and food.

Hiking from McLeodGanj to Triund

Triund Hill in Himachal Pradesh

If you’re starting in McLeodGanj, you will first have to head to Bhagsu , which is 2,5 km (1.5 mi) from McLeodGanj. You can either get here by walking or by taking a taxi.

From Bhagsu, you will have to hike (or continue the taxi drive) all the way up to the Gallu Devi Temple . This is where you will find the start of the path to Triund. It all depends on your personal pace, but it takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to get from Bhagsu to Gallu. The right path can easily be found either by asking a local or using Maps.me.

From here on, it is pretty straightforward. There are arrows marking the way to Triund and it is difficult to get lost, as there’s only one path.

It takes a total of approximately 4 to 6 hours to reach Triund (the total distance is around 10 km or 6.2 mi), depending on your personal pace.

It is good to know that there are some shops and restaurants on the trail from Gallu to Triund.

Hiking to Triund Hill

Once you reach Triund, you will have a beautiful view of the Dhauladhar Mountain Range . This includes a view of Moon Peak, Riflehorn and Arthur’s seat.

It is quite big there and this is a nice place to stay for a while (or camp if you want to do the trek in 2 days). By the time I reached Triund, the sky wasn’t clear anymore and you couldn’t really see the mountains, but this is what it looks like on a clear day:

Triund Hill on a clear day

Camping at Triund (optional)

It is possible to camp at Triund if you would like to do the hike in 2 days, although it is possible to do it in 1 day too. I didn’t stay the night at Triund myself, but I’ve heard it is amazing, as you will be able to see the sunset/sunrise and sleep under the stars.

If you want to camp at Triund , it is good to know that you can rent a tent and sleeping bags in the shops there. If you’re visiting the place during the high season, at the weekend or in the holidays, it is better to book in advance, though, as the tents might be booked out (just ask the place where you’re staying in McLeodGanj to book it for you).

Another option is to stay at the government guesthouse . This place can be booked at the Forest Department Office of Dharamshala (+91 1892-224887).

Camping at Triund

Hiking further: the Laka Glacier Trek (optional)

I didn’t do this myself, but once you reach Triund, it is possible to hike further and do the Laka Glacier Trek. This is a 2 km (1.2 mi) long, steep uphill trek and it is quite strenuous.

This being said, this trek will take you higher along the breathtaking landscapes of the Dhauladhar snow-clad mountains and Kangra Valley. As its name predicts, the Laka Glacier Trek ends at the Laka Glacier, which stands 3,200 m (10,498 ft) above sea level.

It is good to know that you will need 2 or 3 days if you decide to hike to this glacier.

Hiking back to McLeodGanj

View of Bhagsu from Triund

To hike back to McLeodGanj, you can follow the Triund – Karthani Trail , on the southern side of Triund Hill. This trail will pass the Bhagsu Waterfall before reaching the centre of Bhagsu.

Note that the Triund – Karthani Trail is not as straightforward as the trail to hike up, but it is not so hard to follow with a little help from Maps.me.

This trail was my favourite part of the hike. It is not much frequented, the landscapes are amazing and I encountered plenty of sheep and goats along the way, which gave me some nice photo opportunities.

Sheep and goats on the Karthani Trail

Difficulty of the trek to Triund

The Triund Trek is considered a moderate trek . It is not too difficult, but you will need an average fitness level to complete it.

The elevation at Triund is 2,875 m (9,432 ft), while McLeodGanj is at 2,082 m (6,831 ft), so you will ascend about 800 m (2,600 ft) during the hike. This takes a total of 4 to 6 hours and the trek covers about 10 km (6.2 mi) one way.

Although you can do this trek in one day (which is what I did and it is very doable), it will be easier if you camp at Triund and split the hike into 2 days.

If you decide to hike further to the Laka Glacier, you will have to hike up an additional 325 m (1,066 ft).

Best time to do the Triund Trek

The best time to trek to Triund is in the Summer, between the months of March and June . This is when the weather will be at its best and the views will be most clear. You can expect temperatures between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F) at this time of the year.

July to September is the monsoon season. So this is not a good time to trek to Triund unless you don’t mind the rain and slipperiness.

The Winter lasts from October to February and it is possible to do the trek to Triund during this season too. Do note that there will be snow if you’re going in January or February.

Tips for hiking to Triund

  • Make a loop rather than going down the same way as you came up (this is what most people do).
  • Use Maps.me to navigate easily.
  • Bring water , snacks and sunscreen , and wear comfortable shoes . I wore hiking boots, but this trek can also be done with sneakers.
  • Consider camping for a night to see the sunset/sunrise.

Hike to Bhagsu Waterfall, one of the best places to visit in McLeodGanj

Where to stay in McLeodGanj

There are plenty of places to stay in and around McLeodganj. You can opt for McLeodGanj itself, Bhagsu or Dharamkot.

While McLeodGanj is the place where the Dalai Lama lives, Bhagsu is a 20-minute walk from here and it is quieter. Dharamkot is a 30-minute walk from Bhagsu and it is also quieter than McLeodGanj.

Although McLeodGanj is often referred to as Dharamshala , I would not stay in this city, as it is located 5 km (3.1 mi) downhill of McLeodGanj and it is far from the main tourist attractions.

I stayed in Bhagsu as well as in McLeodGanj while I was there, you will find my top recommendations below:

  • Shree Guest House ( ⭐ 8.3) : Shree Guest House was my favourite place to stay in the area. This guesthouse is located in a quiet area in McLeodGanj, just a 5 to 10-minute walk from the main street. The rooms are nice and clean, there’s a shared balcony, the wifi is good and Nadish, the owner, is amazing!
  • Hotel Norbu House (⭐ 9.3): If you’re looking for a more luxurious place to stay with a beautiful view, Hotel Norbu House is the place for you. This hotel is located in a quiet street, near the centre of McLeodGanj and it has all the amenities you might need.
  • Eevolve Dharamkot (⭐ 8.3): Located in Dharamkot, this eco hostel offers beautiful rooms and a garden. This is a great place to stay if you’re planning on staying in the area for a little longer and would like to enrol in yoga classes, for example.

Triund Trek in McLeodGanj: Final thoughts

The trek to Triund is one of the most popular hikes in Dharamshala and it is easy to understand why. Not only are the landscapes beautiful, but this is also a trek that can easily be done independently.

All in all, this was a trek I really enjoyed, even though the sky wasn’t clear anymore by the time I reached Triund. If I would do it again, I would camp at Triund as this increases the chance of having a clear view.

I hope that this guide was clear and that you have found exactly what you were looking for. Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions. I’m updating this post frequently.

A steep climb on the Triund trek that is marked by rocks and boulders

Difficulty Level: Easy

The trek involves gradual to steep ascents that even amateurs can cover. And since the Mcleodganj to Triund distance is not much, it is not very exhausting either. The first 5 km of the Triund trek are simple and not very undulating. Thereon, the Triund trek route gets steep and requires a sturdy walk. This stretch is popularly known as 22 curves because of the 22 sharp curves en route.

However, if you are trekking during winters, the trek becomes slightly difficult due to the presence of snow on the otherwise firm and well-defined path.

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj : A complete guide

Standing over the green meadows at the top of Triund,  I was overwhelmed   by the sight of the snow covered  imposing face of the Himalayas. I can hardly ever forget that image! At the same time, it was natural for me to feel philosophical up there. At the top, it suddenly turns adventure into spirituality, a very unique experience indeed! However, in order to experience that unique feeling, one has to complete a 10 km long trek. Though the Himalayas offer scores of trekking options, Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is one of the moderate ones. If you are up for that experience, here’s a complete guide to the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj.

{To make your reading complete, here’s the link to our Triund trek diary:  Triund: Trekking in a garden }.  {For more such trekking plans, do check out:  Dzukou Valley Trek }

The base location: McLeod Ganj/ Dharamshala

The location of Triund near McLeod Ganj in Dharamshala couldn’t be any better. Its history, heritage, scenic views, cultural and spiritual vibes are reasons for me to go back again and again. It was established as a hill-station by the British in the later part of the 19th century. In fact, it’s named after a British lieutenant governor- David Friell Mcleod.

{Read about another hill-station named after a British official:  Dalhousie }

It was only in the post-independence era, in 1959, Tibetan leader- His Highness the Dalai Lama sought political refuge in India. In an act of solidarity with the Tibetan freedom struggle, Indian government permitted to set up his capital in exile in McLeod Ganj. Since then,  McLeod Ganj has become a hub of Tibetan Buddhism, and is known as ‘Little Lhasa’ (the capital of Tibet).

On my part, I have a fondness for Buddhist philosophy as well as Tibetan culture, especially their colourful Monasteries.  Besides, Dharamshala is also home to tea gardens, heritage sites and much more. In many ways, it reminds me of  Darjeeling  (have look). Find a list of major tourist attractions in Dharamshala-McLeod Ganj in a section  below .

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj: A fact sheet

Triund peak is 2850 meters (9350 feet) above sea level. The  route of  Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is 9-10 kilometers (one way) from the base to the top, and can be covered in 5-6 hours. If one starts early in the morning, one can complete the Triund trek in one day. However, a night-stay in a tent at the Triund peak overseeing the snowy mountains is an amazing experience not to miss.

For your information, some trekkers go much beyond Triund peak. They trek up to snow-line at 3500 meters (10,000 feet), and Indrahar pass at 4300 meters (14108 ft). Thus, if you are interested in trekking beyond Triund peak, have some more days in hand.

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj: How to plan

We heard that trekkers do it in all seasons across the year. But in general, in my view, spring (March-April) is the best time. The temperature is just perfect, neither too cold nor too hot. Besides, clear skies mean the best views. And of course, not to forget the  Rhododendrons  ( Buraansh in Hindi). Because Rhododendron flowers bloom only in the spring.  Believe me, the walk among the Rhododendrons is absolutely enjoyable.

triund-trekking-gang

Monsoons could be risky due to possibility of landslide/ rocks falling off. Besides, thick clouds block views of the valley. Winters would be too cold to enjoy, especially the night camping at the top. In the summer, day time trekking would be really difficult; but one can start in the wee hours of the morning.

Arranging the trek (with a guide or without):

Though one really doesn’t need a guide to trek, it’s good to have one if you are doing it the first time, or you are with family. The guide’s company provides all amenities like tents, blankets and food/ water, etc. They carry all the stuff by mountain-hardened horses. They charge approximately Rs. 1000 per person, including guide services, tents, sleeping gear, food, etc.

If you need a guide, you may contact Anil (we have his mobile phone number; just ask in the comment section).

To camp overnight or not:

No doubt, camping for the night at the top is a must do. The blanket of stars spread across the clear night sky makes it an unforgettable experience. The nearby snow-clad mountains are visible even in the darkness of night. And if it is a full moon night, one would enjoy sitting outside the tents or walking around the plateau. Plus, the experience of the morning-after is also beautiful. See in the picture below how a morning at the top looks like.

Alone or in a group:

While travelling in groups can be a little limiting (freedom) in general, I would say it’s more enjoyable trekking (and other adventure trips) in groups rather than alone. Moreover, trekking in group reduces the fear factor, and calms down the nerves.

The trek route and schedule

The two routes:.

There are two main routes to complete the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj:

  • While one route starts from Bhagsunag temple side, the other one starts from the Guna Devi temple.
  • Though the route that starts from Bhagsunag temple is a bit shorter than the other one, it’s steeper at places.
  • The route starting Guna Devi temple is longer, but has gentler slopes. However, in order to take this route, one needs to hire a vehicle to get dropped at Guna Devi temple, some 2-3 kms away. Else, add that distance in the trek itself, which makes it around 12+ kilometers.
  • In any case, both the routes have easy to moderate slopes at different points.
  • Overall, I would suggest first timers to take the Guna Devi temple route.

triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

When to start:

  • In order to complete the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj in one day, one should start as early as possible in the day so as to reach the top by early afternoon. This way, one has some time in hand to spend at the top, and enough time to reach back McLeod Ganj before it’s dark.
  • If one is planning for night camping, the starting time can be a little late in the morning. But it’s always good to start early so as to avoid trekking in the afternoon sun, unless it’s winter or spring.

The trekking path:

As Triund is a popular trek route in McLeod Ganj, the trekking path is well laid out. Moreover, unlike many trekking routes, one would not get lost on the way. At places, the path is like a stairway made of rocks/ stones. At other places, it’s just a gentle slope to hike. It’s only towards the end of the trek that the path becomes a little steep and a bit difficult, that’s only about 1 km.

One thing that I loved particularly about the trekking path was the abundance of blooming Rhododendron trees. Interestingly, number of these trees kept increasing as we gained height. So much so that at one point, it just felt like trekking in a garden! You will experience the same if you are trekking in the spring.

rhododendrons-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

The Midway rest points:

On the way, there are two proper halting stations, which really means two decent eateries. The first one is called the Magic point, approximately 2 kms from the starting point.

Just ahead of the Magic point, look for a small off-route towards left side. Hike a bit to find a nice view point, perfect for photography. I liked a huge black rock there inching out of the hill surface like a cliff. It’s easy to climb up there and take cool clicks!

The second one doesn’t have a name, but it’s like a little polythene covered snack point. After the second rest point, the trekking route becomes gradually more difficult.

magic-point-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

How is it at the top:

Once you reach the top, it’s but obvious to be overwhelmed by the sight of those snow-clad Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. You will feel as if the grand mountains are smiling at you and are welcoming you to their home. Instantaneously, all the pain taken in the last 5-6 hours would vanish, and would seem totally worth it.

After a while, you will notice the lush green plateau beneath your feet. Huge pieces of boulders interspersing the meadows look fascinating!

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj: Miscellaneous Tips

In this section, I list out a few miscellaneous tips which might be helpful in planning and making up your mind for the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj.

How to reach:

  • By air: Gaggal airport, 15 kms away | Flights from Delhi and Chandigarh
  • By train: Joginder Nagar is the nearest station, 70 kms away
  • By road: Regular comfort buses from Delhi (~500 kms) and Chandigarh (250 kms) | Or, one can drive

Where to stay:

  • Budget hotels:  Moon Walk Residency | Hotel Akash | Albela House | Grand View Lodge | Treebo Trend Roshan House | Green Hotel | King Castle
  • Hostels:  The Hosteller (Bhagsunag | Mall Road) | Moustache | Zostel | Mitra Hostel | Young Monk Hostel & Cafe | Alt-Life Dharamkot | La Vaca India | goSTOPS.

Where to eat:

The Clay Oven | Tibet Kitchen | Hummingbird cafe | Tibetan Mandala cafe | Moonpeak cafe | Nick’s Italian Kitchen | Jimmy’s Italian | Illiterati Books & Coffee | Crepe Pancake | Four Seasons Cafe

Dress for the trek:

  • Wear comfortable fitting clothes. Avoid tight-fitting clothes like jeans.
  • Put on layers (sweaters, jackets etc) as per seasonal requirement.
  • The weather can deteriorate any time at the top. So, it’s good to carry some woolens even during the summers.
  • Trekking shoes, or at least good sports shoes with grip is a must.
  • Besides, a cap or some kind of head gear is advisable.
  • Further, sunglasses are a good addition.

magic-point-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

Big question: Is there a toilet up there?

Answer: No; so, you know what to do, right! (The Forest Deptt. is not allowing any construction work at the top. However, somewhere below the peak, some trek operators have toilet facilities). In any case, believe me, toilet would not matter; everyone manages just well, out in the open.

Things to carry:

  • If you are not on a guided trek, of course you have to carry the tent, blanket, food etc.
  • A torch, a lighter and an umbrella would be handy
  • A walking/ trekking stick is optional (we didn’t need them)
  • Some dry snacks/ energy bar
  • Water bottle; not too many, just one to start with. Their weight can be annoying. In any case, there are small shops at 2-3 points on the way.
  • Above all, carry basic first-aid kit; sun-screen lotion, etc.
  • While you might want to carry a lot of things, control your urge. It will be better to keep yourself light rather than stuffed.

Things to explore in McLeod Ganj/ Dharamshala

By the way, after completing the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj, you better have some more time to explore that wonderful place. There are so many interesting places to see and things to do! Here are a few that I would suggest.

Natural sites:

  • Naddi view point; nice to walk around in the wilderness enjoying the views
  • If you love waterfalls, hike 1-2 kms to reach Bhagsu Waterfalls
  • Dharamkot, a sleepy village to leisurely hangout
  • Dharamshala Tea Gardens; enjoy the view, and shop some great tea
  • Dal lake, a cute little lake
  • If you love paragliding, you have to travel a bit more to reach Bir- Billing, the paragliding site, 75 kms away.

Cultural Experiences:

  • For a great spiritual experience, visit the Dalai Lama temple complex. Find out if he is around, and speaking at the temple one evening
  • Namgyal Monastery, a beautiful Buddhist temple
  • Shakti Peeth Chamunda Devi temple; 25 kms
  • Tashi Jong Monastery; 56 kms away
  • Baijnath Shiva temple; 60 kms away
  • Conveniently, the last three places are actually on the same route, i.e. towards Bir.

Heritage sites:

  • Church of St. John in the wilderness; established 1852
  • Norbulingka Institute: Tibetan school of art and craft; 15 kms away
  • Kangra fort; the largest fort in the Himalayas, and one of the oldest in India; 30 kms away
  • Musroor rock cut temple; an 8th century Hindu temple; 45 kms away.

musroor-rock-cut-temple

Other sites of interest:

  • The Tibet Museum; a great collection of Tibetan artefacts and culture
  • Dharamshala Cricket Stadium: A picturesque ground with the Himalayas in the backdrop
  • Kangra Art Museum; rich collection of traditional miniature paintings.

Concluding Notes

Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is really enjoyable with gentle slopes and great views of the Himalayas all around. It’s long enough to give that satisfaction of completing a proper trek. At the same time, i t’s not too long to deter non-regulars to undertake this trek. If you have never done trekking in mountains, Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is a great option to start the journey.

I would suggest to plan your trek in the spring season- late March to April end, especially because of pleasant weather and the Rhododendron flowers. Do plan for a overnight camping at the top. Further, icing on the cake would be a full moon night. If possible, do it in a small group- your best buddies.

Besides, please don’t forget to have some extra time (at least two days) on hand to explore places in and around McLeod Ganj. Have a great time and thank me later!

Best Time to Visit  Triund Trek

Triund is a journey that can be done at any time of year, but the summers are regarded as peak season, attracting a significant number of visitors from all around the country. This trek is the first choice of those seeking for a simple and doable summer trek. Summer experiences fairly good temperatures with pleasant daytime and slightly colder nights. In March, April, May, and June, visitors can see beautiful trails and green forests with flowing streams.

This trek is also best done in the months following the monsoon season, just before winter. Daytime temperatures range from 5 degrees Celsius to 12 degrees Celsius from September to December, with slightly colder nights.

Is it safe?

Set amidst the popular destinations, the Triund trek is indeed very safe. All of our professionals strive to provide the best experience possible for trekkers, so a collaborative contribution of a relaxed mindset and morally communicative behavior with fellow trekkers will be greatly appreciated.

Despite the fact that the elevation is relatively low, if the hiker experiences any AMC symptoms, please notify our teams before continuing.

Difficulty level

Regardless of the fact that the top is relatively low in elevation, we recommend regulated physical fitness. All groups will be guided by our pros for trekking equipment and any impending terrain during the course. We strongly urge beginner trekkers to attempt the Triundtrek due to its modest difficulty.

Weather conditions

Summers on this trail are typically green, whereas winters see a gradual drop in temperature, allowing nearby areas to become covered in patches of snow.

The weather conditions vary depending on the time of year trekkers travel. From March to June, temperatures are moderately pleasant during the day but significantly colder at night. Monsoons continue to cascade the trek with heavy rain.

During the day the temperature of Triund trek is around ( 09°C to 18  °C  and during the night the temperature comes down to  05 °C  to 10 °C  which is not bad.

Things to carry

1) Because nights at elevations tend to be considerably colder, we suggest having well-graded, warm and comfortable clothing along with good quality shoes.

2) Despite the fact that we handle medical crises, we urge individuals to keep their emergency kits at hand in any case of personal underlying illnesses.

3) Since the journey provides you with a picturesque view of many peaks, don’t forget to bring your camera along with extra batteries.

4) Our staff will consult with fellow trekkers about their luggage and, if lacking, will assist trekkers in obtaining any necessary equipment. Only the relevant luggage should be brought, as a result.

Other important trekking essentials-

Connectivity and Transactions

1) All networks, including Vi, Airtel, and BSNL, function well in Himachal Pradesh, but connectivity along the route is unpredictable, so we advise people to complete all of their work ahead of time.

2) Trekkers will be provided with walkie- talkies beforehand in case of emergency

3) Last ATM transactions available will be at Mcleodganj. We recommend travellers to collect cash beforehand or while in Mcleodganj as ATM available at other places might not dispense cash at times.
