European Technology and Travel Services Association Becomes eu travel tech

travel tech europe

The European Technology and Travel Services Association (ETTSA),  representing travel technology companies, is celebrating its first decade this year. The association has also used the occasion to announce a change of name to eu travel tech.

The new name reflects the deep changes that the sector has gone through since the creation of the association in 2009, especially with the growth of online penetration of travel market in Europe, which has increased from 28% to 50% today, and is projected to rise even further. This ongoing transformation of our sector has inspired eu travel tech to think about the future of travel. On the one hand, the dynamism of our sector depends on enabling an ecosystem that is competitive and digital – and these depend above all on transparency and innovation. Equally, we believe that the consumer must remain as the central driver of this transformation. And of course, our dynamic growth must be sustainable, in the broadest sense of the word. Only by combining all of these factors can the travel sector truly enrich Europe’s economy – and its societies.

Our newly named association also welcomes this week the appointment of Guillaume Teissonniere, General Counsel and Company Secretary at eDreams ODIGEO, as eu travel tech Chairperson. He said: “Online travel distributors have helped reshape the industry by empowering travellers to find better options based on choice, price and flexibility. eu travel tech members want to use our technological expertise and deep experience in the travel and tourism sector to contribute to policymaking that reflects the realities of the modern travel sector.”

Emmanuel Mounier, Secretary General of eu travel tech, added “This change reflects the substantial transformation of the online travel landscape in the last years. We can proudly say that we now represent the full spectrum of online travel distributors, which are crucial contributors to an ever-stronger EU travel and tourism sector. We are looking forward to working together with the renewed EU institutions – we trust that policy and industry objectives can be fully aligned to continue to drive sustainable economic growth in Europe and to provide the best online travel services to consumers.”

Google’s entry into the travel planning arena with its advanced Gemini AI has created significant buzz and raised concerns among traditional travel operators worldwide. This innovative tool leverages artificial intelligence to provide users with personalized, efficient, and comprehensive trip planning services. As Google continues to expand its influence in various industries, Gemini AI represents a potential game-changer that could disrupt the travel industry in profound ways.

Understanding Gemini AI

Gemini AI is Google’s latest foray into the realm of artificial intelligence, designed to enhance user experience across its platforms. In the context of travel, Gemini AI aims to simplify the often complex and time-consuming process of planning a trip. By integrating data from Google’s extensive ecosystem, including search, maps, and user behavior, Gemini AI offers a seamless and intuitive trip planning experience.

The core functionality of Gemini AI revolves around its ability to analyze vast amounts of data to predict user preferences and needs. It can suggest destinations, accommodations, activities, and dining options based on individual user profiles. This level of personalization is achieved through machine learning algorithms that continuously refine their recommendations as more data is collected.

Key Features of Gemini AI in Trip Planning

  • Personalized Recommendations : Gemini AI uses user data to tailor recommendations that match individual preferences and past behaviors. This includes suggesting destinations, hotels, restaurants, and activities that align with the user’s interests and budget.
  • Integrated Itinerary Management : The AI can create detailed itineraries that incorporate travel logistics, such as flights, hotel check-ins, and reservations for activities. It also allows for easy adjustments and updates, providing users with real-time information and alerts.
  • Seamless Booking : Users can book flights, hotels, and activities directly through the platform, leveraging Google’s partnerships with various service providers. This one-stop-shop approach streamlines the booking process, reducing the need to visit multiple websites.
  • Cost Optimization : Gemini AI can monitor prices and notify users of the best times to book flights and accommodations, ensuring cost-effective travel planning. It can also provide insights into potential savings by analyzing historical pricing data.
  • Travel Assistance : The AI offers 24/7 assistance, answering questions and providing support throughout the trip. Whether it’s finding a nearby restaurant or navigating public transportation, Gemini AI is designed to be a reliable travel companion.

The Threat to Traditional Travel Operators

The introduction of Gemini AI poses a significant threat to traditional travel operators, including travel agencies, tour operators, and online travel booking platforms. Here are some of the key challenges these operators might face:

  • Loss of Market Share : As more users turn to Google for their travel planning needs, traditional operators may experience a decline in market share. The convenience and efficiency offered by Gemini AI could make it the preferred choice for many travelers.
  • Pricing Pressure : Google’s ability to provide cost-optimized travel solutions could pressure traditional operators to lower their prices. Competing with the pricing strategies driven by AI-generated insights may prove challenging for smaller operators without access to similar technology.
  • Reduced Customer Loyalty : Personalized experiences offered by Gemini AI can significantly enhance customer satisfaction. Traditional operators may struggle to match this level of personalization, potentially leading to reduced customer loyalty and retention.
  • Innovation Lag : Keeping pace with the rapid advancements in AI and technology requires substantial investment. Traditional operators that lack the resources to innovate at the same speed as Google may find themselves at a disadvantage.
  • Data Dependency : Google’s vast data collection capabilities give it an edge in understanding user behavior and preferences. Traditional operators that do not have access to comparable data may find it difficult to offer similarly tailored experiences.

Adapting to the New Landscape

Despite the challenges posed by Gemini AI, traditional travel operators can take proactive steps to adapt and remain competitive. Here are a few strategies:

  • Embrace Technology : Investing in AI and machine learning technologies can help traditional operators enhance their service offerings. Developing their own AI-driven tools or partnering with tech companies can provide a competitive edge.
  • Focus on Unique Experiences : While Gemini AI excels at providing standardized solutions, traditional operators can differentiate themselves by offering unique, personalized experiences that cater to niche markets. Tailor-made tours, exclusive partnerships, and specialized services can attract discerning travelers.
  • Leverage Human Expertise : Combining technology with human expertise can create a hybrid model that leverages the best of both worlds. Travel agents and consultants can use AI tools to enhance their recommendations while providing personalized service that AI cannot replicate.
  • Enhance Customer Engagement : Building strong relationships with customers through excellent service and engagement can foster loyalty. Utilizing social media, customer feedback, and personalized communication can help maintain a loyal customer base
  • Collaborate with Tech Companies : Forming strategic partnerships with technology firms can provide access to cutting-edge tools and data analytics, enabling traditional operators to compete more effectively.

Google’s Gemini AI is poised to revolutionize the travel planning industry by offering a highly personalized, efficient, and seamless experience. While this presents a formidable challenge to traditional travel operators, it also offers an opportunity for innovation and adaptation. By embracing technology, focusing on unique experiences, and leveraging human expertise, traditional operators can navigate this changing landscape and continue to thrive in the competitive world of travel.

Travel agents may be out of style, but they’ve left a void that self-service online booking platforms can’t fill, especially for executives and high-net-worth individuals. These individuals, who spend millions annually on travel, often struggle with booking logistics, facing slow response times, booking mistakes, and inadequate support from existing platforms. The Prelude, a membership-based luxury concierge company, is bridging this gap by offering the highest quality service and using cutting-edge technology to connect ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs) with a powerful global trade network, providing an unmatched member experience.

As its name suggests, The Prelude—often called the “opening note”—addresses market needs through highly personalized service, responsive support, expert travel and trade knowledge, and meticulous attention to detail during planning. The company has secured an undisclosed seed round from Turnbull Capital Holdings, led by serial entrepreneur Anmol Bhandari, and boasts high-profile advisors like Alex Spiro, attorney to A-list celebrities including Elon Musk and Jay-Z. The Prelude is projected to reach $20 million in gross sales by year-end.

Founded by Stefan Di-Finizio, a veteran in luxury travel, The Prelude aims to revolutionize the fragmented concierge and travel market. Di-Finizio, who began his career at SkyClub, Europe’s leading First and Business Class flight agency, later joined digital concierge company Velocity Black to lead their travel division. After three years, he became an independent private concierge for UHNWIs, offering bespoke travel solutions globally. The Prelude combines a dedicated mobile app and platform with client-specific teams to meet their members’ needs.

Today’s travel industry offers two types of service: self-service online booking and outsourced travel support by large credit card companies. UHNWIs have been disappointed with the lackluster booking experience. The Prelude achieves a high-touch feel complemented by modern luxuries, providing each member with a dedicated lifestyle manager and two assistants, along with an innovative mobile app. This app allows members to communicate with their manager, book experiences, view bookings and itineraries, and enjoy an immersive experience.

The Prelude’s members typically spend between $200,000 and $3 million annually on travel. They include ultra-high-net-worth families planning multiple holidays, entertainment clients traveling for social events like award shows and fashion shows, busy executives, and exited entrepreneurs who need comprehensive travel management. The company has attracted members of AMEX Centurion seeking more personalized and bespoke services.

“The Prelude is the first end-to-end solution. To sum it up, we are solving time optimization for our members to help them reap the best experiences when they travel. In an ever-changing world, given the pace of new information and how quickly things change, there is a pressing need for an expert in this space to be able to adapt to members’ families, work, and general schedule changes. We are doing exactly that, while providing a personal and unforgettable user experience along the way,” said founder Stefan Di-Finizio.

Members benefit from The Prelude’s rapid travel bookings, unparalleled access to venues and events through relationships with leading hospitality groups, and exclusive perks from Di-Finizio’s connections with luxury hotel chains. For example, after one member’s commercial flight for a ski trip was canceled last minute, The Prelude arranged a jet within 60 minutes, ensuring the trip continued as planned. Additionally, the team secured last-minute access for a member to the renowned LouLou’s during Couture Paris Fashion Week and arranged a range of experiences in the city.

The Prelude key domain lies in its ability to support members through dedicated teams and its app where members can request, book on-demand, feedback all in real time. The combination of real-time technology and a 24/7 behind the scenes team will enable it to scale without sacrificing member experience at any given moment. “Having been in this industry for some time and seeing what has worked and not worked, I was adamant that there was a better way by combining technology and people to ensure high-touch service never falters as we scale” explained Stefan Di-Finizio.

Looking ahead, The Prelude plans to expand its global presence and enhance its digital offerings, aiming to become a leading lifestyle management company known for exceptional service, luxury goods through affiliate partnerships, and unrivaled ease of mind and access for its members.

Anmol Bhandari, Managing Partner of Turnbull Capital added: “The travel space is fragmented. There are many companies that offer “concierge services”, but they are just booking the things people could have done on their own more efficiently. A concierge service doesn’t stop and start with a virtual booking agent. The Prelude solves this with a tech stack that creates amazing opportunities for users and delivers with the high-bar service level required by busy individuals. It’s an impressive infrastructure and platform that just makes sense and most importantly it works. Their attention to detail on preferences is unlike any other service. They are effectively a combination of a family office infrastructure, executive assistant and chaperone that ensures things work as they should.”

Today, nCino, Inc., a trailblazer in cloud banking for the global financial services sector, announced that M&T Bank Corporation (“M&T”) (NYSE:MTB), an established and loyal client of nCino, is broadening its utilization of the nCino platform.

Today, nCino , Inc., a trailblazer in cloud banking for the global financial services sector, announced that M&T Bank Corporation (“M&T”) (NYSE:MTB), an established and loyal client of nCino, is broadening its utilization of the nCino platform. This expansion involves integrating nCino’s Continuous Credit Monitoring Solution into its operations, powered by nIQ and leveraging Rich Data Co’s (RDC) AI decisioning platform.

nCino’s Continuous Credit Monitoring Solution, utilizing RDC’s explainable AI platform, aims to enhance transparency in decision-making for M&T. It provides in-depth insights into cash flow health, credit risk, and lending prospects at both individual customer and portfolio levels. This advancement equips M&T with the ability to identify early warning indicators more effectively and access supplementary data for informed decisions throughout the customer lifecycle. Ultimately, this innovative solution promises to revolutionize M&T’s approach to managing credit risk and loan performance across its portfolio.

“M&T Bank is committed to delivering enhanced credit risk management solutions to our Commercial and Business Banking clients, leveraging data to drive additional automation, and provide intelligent, actionable insights,” said Nicholas Batyko, Engineering Director, M&T Bank.

“By adopting nCino’s Continuous Credit Monitoring Solution, we are further enhancing our ability to manage credit risk through the automation of early warning indicators. This scalable capability will provide insights to our employees to drive even more timely and tailored banking experiences,” said Sarah Hudak, Director of Credit Product Delivery, M&T Bank.

nCino’s platform, powered by RDC’s advanced AI technology, optimizes early detection systems, enhances customer assessments, and reveals fresh, less risky lending prospects.

“Partnering with nCino and M&T Bank to bring this innovative solution to life has been a rewarding experience,” said Julian Bloomfield, Chief Revenue Officer at RDC . “Our AI-driven platform forecasts future serviceability, enables deeper, more meaningful banker-customer interactions and greatly improves credit outcomes. This collaboration showcases the potential of joint efforts in enhancing efficiency and innovation in the banking industry, ensuring superior service delivery to customers.”

Through this collaboration, nCino is setting a new standard in how financial institutions manage credit risk. “Our goal is to transform the approach to credit risk management, moving it from a reactive to a proactive stance,” said Sean Desmond, Chief Product Officer at nCino . “nCino not only streamlines operations by automating previously manual tasks but also bridges the gap between ambition and achievement by providing real-time, actionable insights that empower strategic decision-making.”

Last year, nCino unveiled a worldwide reseller agreement alongside an investment in RDC, aiming to harness RDC’s decisioning prowess. This collaboration amplifies nCino’s Cloud Banking Platform, empowering nIQ to seamlessly integrate advanced intelligence into banking processes, enabling more precise, efficient, and comprehensive evaluations of portfolio health and credit risk.

Travel + Leisure / Alli Waataja

We live in a technologically advanced society, and that means we usually bring some sort of gadget with us wherever we go, even if it’s just a phone. Some provide entertainment — like tablets, eReaders, and headphones — while others can make journeys more convenient or comfortable instead (such as luggage trackers, folding keyboards, and portable sound machines). To help you discover what your packing list could be missing, we've compiled a list of our favorite tech-related items whether you’re traveling for fun or business.

Best eReader

Amazon kindle paperwhite.

It has a 10-week battery life.

You need to pay a fee to get rid of the ad-supported lock screen.

One of the biggest players in the eReader game, the Kindle Paperwhite hits all the marks when it comes to features you need in a digital book. It has a 6.8-inch glare-free display screen with adjustable warm lighting for reading in the dark (say, on a plane at night), with a monumental battery life of 10 weeks and storage capabilities up to 16 GB. It's also water-resistant for poolside reading.

Best Earbuds

Bose quietcomfort earbuds ii.

The highly effective active noise cancellation technology drowns out annoying ambient sounds.

Our testers noticed inconsistent battery life after six months of use.

When we tested these Bose earbuds , we were impressed by a number of features, including effective active noise cancellation (ANC) technology, quick Bluetooth connectivity, and a lightweight fit. We also love that each pair comes with three sets of rubber earpieces, each a different size to accommodate multiple ear shapes and sizes. And, as for sound quality, Bose can't be beat, whether you're listening to music or taking a call. Though the headphones are pricey, we think these features make them worth the cost.

Best On-ear Headphones

Apple airpods max.

The ANC works particularly well for phone calls or Zoom meetings.

The only way to turn them off is by putting them in their carrying case.

These days, it's not good enough for a pair of headphones to simply deliver good sound — it needs to block sound, too. The Apple AirPods Max Wireless Over-ear Headphones do the trick with their ANC technology, which we found to be top-notch in tests . We also loved the intuitive nature, which can quickly and easily be controlled by buttons on the earpiece. But the one flaw here is that to turn them off, you must put the headphones in their carrying case. We'd appreciate a simple power button next time!

Best Power Bank

Tg90° portable charger.

It's the size of a credit card and has built-in cords.

It only holds approximately 1.5 full charges for most phones.

Portable charges come in all shapes and sizes, but if it's portability and convenience you seek, your best bet is to purchase this handy little device. Roughly the size of a credit card (albeit thicker) and weighing just 4.32 ounces, the TG90° Portable Charger is easy to toss in your bag or in your pocket. At 6000mAh, it holds less than two full charges for most phones, but it works perfectly when you need some juice in a pinch. Best of all, it has built-in Lightning and USB-C cords attached, so you don't need to waste space with extra cords.

Best Adapter

Epicka universal travel adapter.

It has six ports for maximum charging capabilities.

It's only an adapter, not a converter, so it can't handle high-energy tools like hair dryers.

A travel adapter is a must-have tool for all international travelers, since socket shapes vary in different parts of the world. This one by Epicka is our tester favorite — it can be used in more than 150 countries, making it a practical all-in-one device. It has an impressive six ports for chagrin: four USB-A, one USB-C, and 1 AC socket. So no matter what type of charger you're using, you'll be able to plug it into this adapter. As a bonus, it comes in four colors so you don't have to choose the standard black of so many tech items.

Best Wi-Fi Hotspot

Netgear nighthawk m6 pro.

It's unlocked, so you can use it on most major cell networks.

It's very expensive for occasional use only.

Portable Wi-Fi hotspots can be useful when you're traveling somewhere without a guaranteed internet connection, but do note that you'll usually need cell service to operate them. NETGEAR's Nighthawk M6 Pro is unlocked, so you can use it on any major cell network by adding a SIM card — and it taps into both 5G and the new Wi-Fi 6E to offer the highest speeds possible. You can also use a wired connection if you happen to have an ethernet cable.

Best Luggage Tracker

Eufy smarttrack link.

It's less expensive than an AirTag.

It isn't Android-compatible.

Apple AirTags might seem to run the show, but in our tests , we preferred Eufy's SmartTrack Link. For one thing, it's cheaper than an AirTag. And for another, it still works with the Find My app on iPhone just like an AirTag. Simply activate the device with the app, then put it in your checked suitcase, and you'll be able to track your bags as they make their journey through the airport and into your plane's cargo hold.

Best Projector

Nebula by anker solar portable projector.

It's compact yet still offers high-quality images and sound.

The power cord is quite short.

No, you probably won't need a portable projector on every trip you take. But if you're heading to a beach house or in a cabin in the woods, it could be a fun way to have a family movie night — particularly if your vacation rental lacks a big TV. If you're using it outdoors, note that we found the device to have a 3-hour battery life, which should work for most movies. Otherwise, you'll want to bring an extension cord to plug it in, as its built-in cord is just two feet long.

Best Smart Sunglasses

Ray-ban meta headliner.

You can't beat the video, photo, and audio quality.

The battery life isn't the best among smart glasses.

We've always been fans of Ray-ban sunglasses, but these smart glasses take the game to the next level. Within these frames, which have a slightly different shape than Ray-ban's classic Wayfarer, is a 12-megapixel camera with an ultra-wide lens to capture photos and videos that you can upload onto other devices like digital picture frames — and you can even live stream directly to Facebook or Instagram. There are five built-in microphones to capture audio, whether that's during a video recording or a phone call for extra-clear sound. The audio output quality is excellent, too, for both music and calls.

Best Digital Notebook

Rocketbook core.

You can scan a QR code to save your entries in an app.

It takes some getting used to a digital notebook rather than a traditional one.

Digital notebooks might not have the nostalgia factor of a traditional notebook, but they are pretty handy if you do a lot of journaling or doodling while you're traveling. This way, you won't have to lug around multiple notebooks on a months-long adventure! With Rocketbook Core, you can write or draw on the pages of the notebook with a Pilot pen , then scan a QR code to upload to an app. Once you're ready to start fresh, you can just wipe down each page with a slightly damp microfiber cloth (included). This is the full-size model, but there's also a mini size available if you'd prefer something more travel-friendly.

Best Laptop

Apple macbook air 13.6” laptop.

If you need to work on the road, this is lightweight yet reasonably powerful.

The base model only has 8GB of RAM.

If you're an Apple person, the newest MacBook Air is the best device for travelers. It has the ultra-fast M2 processing chip which is 1.4 times faster than the previous model, the M1. And, as an Air, it's lighter than the standard MacBook or MacBook Pro models which is always helpful when traveling. However, what we really love about the newest MacBook Air is that it's returned to a magnetic charging port, so you don't have to worry about accidentally ripping out your charging cable or pulling down a laptop if you trip over the cord.

Best Tablet

Apple 10.9” ipad (9th generation).

Since it's not the newest model, it's usually on sale.

It's best for entertainment rather than intense productivity.

Some planes aren't equipped with built-in in-flight entertainment systems, which means you should probably bring a tablet on your next trip . We're partial to the Apple iPad, specifically, not the latest model for one simple reason: it's usually on sale. Unless you plan on working from your iPad, in which case you'd probably want to upgrade to something more powerful or even a laptop, this one will do just fine for things like watching movies and shows. It'll still work for other tasks where a screen larger than a phone comes in handy, like sending email, making notes, and even taking photos.

Best DSLR Camera

Sony alpha 7r v.

It takes both excellent stills and video, thanks to its 61 megapixels and 8K video quality.

Lenses must be purchased separately.

For those seriously interested in photography and videography, you can't go wrong with the Sony Alpha 7R V. Ultimately, it has extremely high-quality imagery and video that works on a professional level. We're also impressed with its smart features, including fast Wi-Fi, real-time auto video tracking, and accurate subject recognition. And, for travelers, it's fairly lightweight for a DSLR, and it has a long battery life. Just know that it’s on the more expensive side if you’re just dabbling and the price does not include any lenses.

Best Point-and-shoot Camera

Sony rx100 iii 20.1 mp premium compact digital camera.

It's highly portable.

It's pricey for a point-and-shoot, though it does offer superior quality.

For more casual travel photographers, a point-and-shoot camera like the Sony RX100 III is an easier-to-use, more-travel-friendly option than a DSLR with much higher quality than a smartphone. It's still a smart camera, with built-in WiFi, a touch screen, and continuous autofocus to use in video mode, but it's far smaller and more lightweight than a DSLR. One feature we particularly like is its zoom — the built-in Leica lens has a 24–720-millimeter zoom range.

Best Portable Speaker

Ultimate ears wonderboom 3.

It offers bold sound for such a compact size.

It can be tricky to connect with other Wonderboom speakers (for surround sound).

Headphones are great for solo listening, but if you're with a group, you're going to need a portable speaker. We love the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3, first and foremost, for the small size and loud, crisp sound, but, second, for its waterproof and dustproof nature. That means it's perfectly fine to take this on a more rugged journey into the woods or to a beach party, or toss it in a backpack without concern. If you want to amplify the noise, you can connect it to multiple Wonderboom speakers, though we found the process a little bit complicated.

Best Portable Monitor

Asus zenscreen go 15.6" ips lcd fhd monitor.

It has a 3.5-hour battery life.

It's portable, but heavier than other portable monitors.

Nothing beats a multi-screen set-up in your office, but bringing multiple screens on the go isn't realistically feasible. Or is it? Enter: the portable monitor. ASUS ZenScreen is a 15.6-inch screen with an adjustable kickstand that can easily be set up as a second monitor with its included adapters. Or you can use it as a larger screen to stream from your phone, thanks to wireless mirroring capabilities with Apple, Android, and Google. Perhaps most impressively, it can run on battery power alone for up to 3.5 hours.

Best Folding Keyboard

Samsers foldable bluetooth keyboard.

It can be used for various devices, including your phone.

The included stand is only designed for phones, not tablets.

For people who have to type lengthy emails, articles, or notes during their travels, sometimes the touchscreen keyboard of your phone or tablet doesn't cut it. If you'd like to leave your laptop behind but still have full typing capabilities, you'll want to pack this foldable Bluetooth keyboard . It's super compact, lightweight, and long-lasting (up to 40 hours of use on a single charge), but it unfurls to a full keyboard size.

Best Mini Photo Printer

Canon selphy square qx10 compact photo printer.

The photos are printed with a peel-off adhesive backing.

You can only print square photos.

Turn any camera into an instant camera with this portable photo printer. The Canon Selphy QX10 prints images on 2.7 x 2.7, adhesive-backed photo paper, making it easy to stick them into a notebook or onto a wall. If you download the Canon Selphy app, available on both iPhone and Android, you can even create multi-photo layouts and add effects, filters, and stickers to your images before printing.

Best Portable Sound Machine

Babelio white noise machine.

It's truly pocket-sized — and cheap!

You can't add your own sounds, as they're all pre-programmed.

Can't sleep without white noise? Bring this teensy portable sound machine with you on your next trip. There are 15 sound options on the device, which rain from white and pink ambient sounds to natural sounds like waves and rain. The battery will last the whole night (charged by a USB-C port), or you can set a timer for 30 or 60 minutes to automatically shut the sound machine off.

Best Headphone Adapter

Twelve south airfly pro.

It connects wireless headphones to in-flight entertainment systems.

Sometimes there's a slight lag in the audio.

While many headphone-wearers have cut cords and opted for wireless earbuds or headphones, in-flight entertainment systems on planes are still largely wired (though cabins are slowly debuting wireless audio capabilities!). Not only are they wired, but they're only compatible with a traditional 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. Fortunately, there's AirFly, a device that transmits audio from that jack to your wireless headphones via Bluetooth. It has up to 20 hours of battery life, which pretty much covers every flight in the world.

Best Tech Organizer

Bagsmart cable organizer bag.

There are multiple loops and pouches for cables, as well as pockets for memory cards.

It's not particularly small, so if you only have a few items to store, you might want to pick a more petite model.

Cords tend to get tangled in transit, so keep all your chargers nice and tidy with a tech organizer . This one has a variety of pouches and loops that can be used to keep your cords separate, as well as pockets for other small tech gizmos, like a Lightning to USB adapter or lightning to audio jack adapter. There's a spot for everything in this organizer, which makes it a touch bulky. You can always opt for a smaller version if you don't think you'll fill this one.

Best Laptop Backpack

Solo re:define backpack.

It has a compact silhouette but a sneakily large interior.

We noticed a zipper fraying after four months of use.

If you're traveling with a laptop, you'll definitely want some sort of bag or carrying case to store it in. Because laptops can be fairly heavy — or at least feel heavy after lugging them around all day — we recommend a laptop backpack. In our tests , we ranked Solo's Re:Define Laptop Backpack quite highly, praising it for its slim look yet surprisingly spacious interior. Then, of course, there's a padded laptop pocket that can fit devices up to 15.6 inches in size. With its sleek look, we think the bag is great for both students and commuters, but it'll also fare well on leisure trips, too.

Tips for Buying Travel Tech Essentials

Prioritize convenience, entertainment, or both.

Typically, travel tech essentials should either make things more convenient as you travel, or provide entertainment on a long day or during downtime at your destination. Of course, exact purposes vary but, before deciding to buy (or pack) any travel tech items, consider their portability as well as how much use you’ll get out of each pick as space is often limited on the go.

Plan for your organizational needs

Remember that you're going to have to store your travel tech somewhere so have an organizational plan in mind for the items you plan to bring. You can do this with bags with numerous pockets, such as easy-access ones where you can stash things you might need to take out frequently, such as your passport or headphones. Or you can store important items in smaller bags that go into bigger ones such as a cord organizer or travel pouch .

Consider your mode of transportation, your destination, and your itinerary. Are you packing essentials for a road trip , or taking a plane or train? If you have limited space, you may want to watch movies on your phone with a pair of earbuds. If you plan on taking long train rides or red-eye flights, on-ear, noise-canceling headphones may be an item you’ll want to leave space for in your bag. If you’re traveling for long periods and plan to work, a laptop or tablet and portable keyboard can come in handy, and if you know you’ll have a bunch of travel tech items, having some sort of organizer or a backpack with ample pockets will be key.

It's advisable to avoid bringing delicate and heavy items — the hardier and more lightweight, the better. Plus, remember that not all items can be taken on the road, specifically on planes. Lithium batteries and portable power banks, for example, cannot be stored in checked bags and must be brought with you in the cabin.

When flying, travelers commonly appreciate bringing headphones, headphone adapters, and portable entertainment like a tablet loaded with shows or movies or an eReader.

In Moscow’s Technological Advances, a ‘Double-Edged Sword’

The latest example is Face Pay, which replaces a Metro card with facial recognition. It may be advanced, but activists are sounding the alarm on privacy issues.

travel tech europe

By Celestine Bohlen

The Moscow Metro — a world-class marvel of efficient mass transportation since it opened in 1935 — made headlines last month with a very 21st-century innovation: a payment system that doesn’t require passengers to produce a ticket, a transit card, a smartphone or a contactless bank card. All they have to do is show their face.

By Oct. 15, the facial recognition system, called Face Pay, was up and running at about 240 stations on the Moscow Metro, a sprawling and constantly expanding system famous for its on-time track record and its grandiose and ornate stations.

Moscow city officials were quick to tout the system’s latest technological innovation, one of several over the last decade. “There are no analogues of Face Pay in terms of quality and ease of use for a passenger anywhere in the world,” said Maksim Liksutov, deputy mayor for transport.

To activate Face Pay, passengers must connect their photo with a bank card and the Metro’s Troika, or transit card, via a special mobile app. Once connected, a camera at the turnstiles identifies their faces (even with masks on) and opens the gates. In theory, it should take two to three seconds for a passenger to clear the turnstile, easing the crush of people at peak rush hours.

It is one of the most visible — and controversial — of the city’s projects to modernize its services, one that takes full advantage of advancing biometric technology and the skills of a new generation of Russian computer engineers. “The technology is new and very complex, we will continue to work on improving it,’’ said Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, in a statement.

But digital privacy activists in Russia were quick to raise the alarm, noting that the new system is not just about improving service on the Moscow Metro. “It is a good pretext to put cameras at the turnstiles,’’ said Artyom Koslyuk, a director at Roskomsvoboda, a digital rights group based in Moscow. “This will allow them to perfect the algorithms used for the recognition of faces.’’

According to Mr. Koslyuk, Moscow ranks third in the world for the most surveillance on streets and public transport, with some 200,000 cameras placed around the city and on the Metro to help police identify criminals and prevent crime. Russian police have already used facial recognition to find and arrest demonstrators who participated in peaceful opposition protests.

The two other countries that have gone ahead with facial recognition payment systems are China and Belarus, where privacy rights are also of little concern to the government. (In Belarus, the facial recognition system on the Minsk metro is called Look and Go.) In contrast, the European Parliament voted last month in favor of a nonbinding resolution to ban use of facial recognition technology in public places for police purposes.

Moscow officials have tried to calm concerns about privacy invasion by insisting that the images and data collected are “securely encrypted.’’ Roskomsvoboda, though, said they have uncovered evidence that the system is porous, vulnerable to intruders who can use the data and images for criminal purposes.

Privacy advocates are pushing for a more transparent system of control for this and other advanced, and often intrusive, technologies. “We need to be sure that all these innovations are used to help the people, not harm them,’’ said Mr. Koslyuk.

Face Pay is part of a broader set of efforts in the city to institute technological solutions. Moscow is undoubtedly Russia’s “smartest” city, not least because it is the nation’s capital, and a focus of government attention. Its 12.5 million people make it the second most populous city in Europe — and it is growing. Between 2002 and 2010, while Russia’s population decreased by 1.2 percent, Moscow’s grew by 10.9 percent. And the average wage in the capital is almost double the national average.

The capital also gets royal treatment from the federal government. In 2019, Moscow’s urban renewal budget equaled that of the rest of the country.

“Moscow has the power in terms of finance and budgets,’’ said Sergei Kamolov, a professor at the prestigious Moscow State Institute of International Relations. “Moscow is in the avant-garde, a test case for all different kinds of systems.’’

Two years ago, Russia adopted its own system for ranking its “smart cities,” measuring what is called their “I.Q. level.” This provides benchmarks for cities to measure progress in putting modern techniques and digital services in place for their population. Mr. Kamolov said these are useful tools to pressure local officials to meet targets set in a national “Smart Cities” program.

Mr. Kamolov, who is member of a working group on the “Smart Cities” program, cautions that its ideas and technologies are not easily duplicated from city to city. Nor, he said, do fancy new technologies necessarily have an impact on the citizens’ quality of life. “It seems to me that ‘Smart Cities’ is a deep marketing concept,’’ he said in a telephone interview.

In recent years, Russia has put a major nationwide effort into its e-government services. Ahead of the 2018 World Cup, Russia developed a system of e-visas, allowing tourists to come into the country for a limited time and for limited purpose. And like many countries, it has developed a popular online government portal — known as Gosuslugi , a one-stop website where citizens can retrieve documents, pay fines and make appointments. In a 2020 United Nations e-government survey , Russia’s services ranked 36th out of 193 countries.

In this, as in other areas, Moscow leads the way. More Muscovites use Gosuslgi proportionately than any other region of Russia — not surprising given its concentration of young, educated and computer literate people. But other regions are stepping up efforts to catch up, by offering special courses for computer literacy , especially for the elderly.

Moscow and six other regions were also used as a test case for Russia’s experiment with online voting in last September’s parliamentary elections. The system was challenged by democracy protesters, who described it as a “black box” that allowed the government to fiddle with the vote. Setting aside the contested results — a huge caveat, to be sure — online voting did its job, at least on a technical level.

Moscow has introduced other digital services in health care, in schools and in the legal system, but transportation continues to receive a hefty share of the city’s modernization budget.

According to Mr. Kamolov, Moscow has the largest fleet of electronic buses in Europe while the Metro — which now moves about six million passengers on weekdays (down from more than eight million in the pre-Covid era) — still commands a large portion of public funds: $27 billion for expansion and improvement from 2011 to 2022 , most of it for expansion but some of it undoubtedly for the facial recognition system that is now expected to be introduced in other Russian cities.

At Roskomsvoboda, Mr. Koslyuk says the key to introducing advanced digital services that depend on personal data is trust. ‘‘We need to be sure there are controls,’’ he said. “These improvements can be a double-edged sword.”

Booking.com Hit With EU’s ‘Gatekeeper’ Status, Faces Tighter Regulation

Sean O'Neill , Skift

May 13th, 2024 at 8:56 AM EDT

Online travel giant Booking.com will be held to a stricter regulatory standard in 27 European countries, but it remains to be seen what the true impact will be.

Sean O'Neill

The European Commission said on Monday it had designated Booking.com’s parent company, Booking Holdings, as having “gatekeeper” regulatory status under the European Union’s  Digital Markets Act . The move came as part of a broader effort to rein in tech giants such as Google and Apple.

Booking has six months to submit a report outlining how it complies with certain obligations. Non-compliance could lead to fines of up to 10% of the company’s total worldwide revenue.

“We have been working with the European Commission for some time as we anticipated today’s decision,” said a Booking Holdings spokesperson. “We are reviewing their designation decision now and will continue to work constructively with them as we develop solutions to comply.”

Stricter Regulations

The move will impose stricter obligations on Booking.com regarding content moderation, fair competition, and making it easier for consumers to switch to other providers. The European Commission said its action will make sure Booking is “offering more choice and freedom to end users and fair access of business users to the gatekeeper services.”

Under the Digital Markets Act, tech companies having at least an $82 billion market cap and 45 million active monthly users face mandates on how they do business in Europe.

Skift has followed the story since 2020 when European Commission antitrust czar  Margrethe Vestager floated the idea that Booking.com might be designated as a gatekeeper . Skift has noted that the potential impact may be overblown , given how previous efforts to change the contracts Booking.com and other online travel players have with hotel companies didn’t much change the dynamics in Europe.

Brussels last year blocked Booking’s bid for eTraveli, a smaller online travel agency, claiming the deal would lead to higher consumer prices.

Vestager said in a press statement that the decision means that vacationers “will start benefiting from more choice and hotels will have more business opportunities.”

Travel giant Booking.com to face tough new EU tech rules

travel tech europe

BRUSSELS – The European Union on May 13 added Dutch online travel giant Booking.com to its list of digital companies that are big enough to fall under tougher competition rules.

Brussels also said it would investigate whether social media platform X, owned by tech billionaire Elon Musk, can be exempted from the rules.

The former Twitter has filed a rebuttal arguing that “despite meeting the thresholds, X does not qualify as an important gateway between businesses and consumers”, said the European Commission, whose probe should wrap up within five months.

Booking.com, whose parent company Booking Holdings is headquartered in the United States, now has six months to prepare for compliance with the landmark Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The EU has already named six market “gatekeepers” that have to comply with the DMA: Google parent Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft and TikTok owner ByteDance.

The rules aim to level the playing field in the digital market, ensuring EU users have more options when choosing products such as web browsers and search engines.

The DMA also demands that companies inform Brussels before acquisitions of other firms, regardless of size, in a bid to curb monopolies.

Booking.com is a dominant player with a market share in Europe of more than 60 per cent.

“Today’s good news is: holidaymakers will start benefiting from more choice and hotels will have more business opportunities,” said the EU’s competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager.

Internal market commissioner Thierry Breton vowed the EU would work to make sure Booking “will fully comply with the DMA obligations within six months”.

Companies in the cross hairs

Booking.com said it had been in talks with the commission before the EU’s decision.

“(We) will continue to work constructively with them as we develop solutions to comply,” the company added in a statement.

With the DMA, the EU can impose fines of up to 10 per cent of a company’s total global turnover. This can rise to 20 per cent for repeat offenders and in the most severe circumstances, the EU can order the break-up of companies.

The EU has not shied away from taking on the biggest digital platforms, like Booking, through its new laws or using older, more established rules.

Brussels in 2023 blocked Booking’s bid for Etraveli, a smaller online travel agent, citing fears it could lead to higher prices for consumers.

The EU has already launched probes under the DMA into Apple, Google and Meta.

For Brussels to name a company as a gatekeeper, it must fulfil certain conditions.

The criteria include having more than 45 million monthly active users in the EU and more than 10,000 yearly active business users established in the bloc.

Digital companies with an annual turnover in the EU of at least €7.5 billion (S$11 billion) or a market value of above €75 billion also face the new curbs.

In the same statement on May 13, the commission also said it opted not to include advertising services provided by X and TikTok on its list. AFP

High air ticket prices aren’t deterring European travelers, as TUI narrows losses ahead of London delisting

people standing at a railway station looking up at screens

TUI is something of a bellwether for the European travel industry. The German group is Europe’s largest tourism operator, serving about 28 million customers through its flights, resorts, cruises and more. And if its quarterly earnings release is anything to go by, the summer’s looking bright.

TUI reported its highest-ever second-quarter revenues of €3.66 billion ($3.96 billion) on Wednesday, up 16% compared to a year earlier. Notably, strong demand for trips and vacations has sent prices soaring, but that’s not stopped people from splurging anyway.

During the three months to Mar. 31, the German giant saw 2.8 million guests flocking to its 400 hotels and 16 cruise ships, which helped boost its earnings.

For the crucial upcoming summer season, TUI said bookings had hit about 60% of its markets and airline capacity, which it described as “promising.”

“Travelling is very popular with people. We see trends that will further strengthen this in the future: experiences are becoming more important than possessions, and the middle classes are growing in many parts of the world,” said TUI CEO Sebastian Ebel.

A few challenges remain, Ebel added, such as the Red Sea crisis, but cruises and hotels have been running full since last year, which helped the Hanover, Germany-based company curb its underlying losses in the first three months of 2024 to €189 million ($204.6 million)— an improvement of more than 22%.

“The message delivered was that, even if the group is still loss making, the situation has improved quite significantly,” Deutsche Bank analyst Andre Juillard said in a note Wednesday.

Like most travel and tourism groups, TUI’s financial performance is seasonal, and it is quite normal to report losses in the first half of its year before the summer season gets underway. Last year, TUI’s full-year underlying EBIT was €977.2 million ($1.06 billion), and it has issued guidance that its 2024 full-year result will exceed this by at least 25%.

Boom amid listing move

This earnings release marks TUI’s last before it delists from the London Stock Exchange in June to shift its primary listing to its home country following an overwhelming majority vote from shareholders in February.

“The advantages of a main listing in Frankfurt are obvious: the structures are simplified, liquidity is centralized and improved in one trading venue and the simplified structure supports the EU requirements for ownership and control of our airlines,” CFO Mathias Kiep said when announcing the decision to move listing bases.

TUI’s move comes as a string of London-listed companies have opted to move elsewhere in Europe—or the U.S.—for better access to capital and less onerous compliance standards. Europe’s largest budget airline, Ryanair, left the LSE in 2021 —its primary listing is now on Dublin’s Euronext—while Cambridge U.K.-based chip company Arm Holdings decided to list in the States last year.

The German company has been expanding its offerings to appeal to more travelers seeking greater affordability and flexibility. Earlier this year, TUI struck a deal with Ryanair to offer the Dublin-based carrier’s flights through its website.

“We’re well underway with what we want to achieve this year,” Ebel said during an earnings call.

It’s a strong position to be in as the peak summer season approaches.

SXSW London to bring Texas to Shoreditch in 2025 as new festival announced

South by Southwest is getting an East London makeover, as the festival of creativity prepares to make its European debut.

Since its debut in Austin, Texas in 1987, the annual event – often referred to as SXSW – has been considered a go-to location for the newest releases in culture and technology.

In March, the festival hosted the world premieres of the new Anne Hathaway-led romcom The Idea of You , and the Sydney Sweeney-fronted nun horror Immaculate , while artists such as Janelle Monáe and Questlove entertained music lovers.

The Duchess of Sussex also gave a keynote speech about women’s leadership at this year’s event , while tech company Hanson Robotics brought along a humanoid robot named Desdemona to showcase how AI can be taught to understand and care about people.

Describing itself as “the world’s leading festival celebrating the convergence of creativity, culture and technology”, SXSW will now mark its European debut in London in 2025.

“As a lifelong fan of SXSW, I truly believe that it’s more than an event – it’s a movement, a platform where the world’s greatest minds, musicians and motivators come to share their passion and their vision of the future,” said Randel Bryan, managing director of SXSW London.

“SXSW London will build on Austin’s incredible legacy, presenting an event that underpins why SXSW is the go-to destination for professionals and creatives seeking meaningful connections, unexpected experiences and ideas that can help shape the world.

Bryan also noted that the establishment of SXSW in London will “provide a platform for the next generation of creative talent”, with several opportunities “for learning, employment and community uplift”.

The festival first branched out from its Austin roots in 2023 with the launch of SXSW Sydney. For SXSW London, talent from the UK and Europe will take centre stage with a series of talks, music showcases and innovations in tech, gaming and screen.

The recently re-elected London mayor Sadiq Khan also shared his excitement for SXSW coming to the British capital city, noting that it confirms “our place at the heart of Europe’s tech and creative sectors and as a global capital of culture”.

Khan’s statement continues: “When I was part of SXSW in Austin in 2018, I saw firsthand the electric atmosphere of innovation SXSW creates and I can’t wait to be part of it again.

“This is a historic opportunity for London to once again bring the world’s most exciting talent together as part of our mission to build a better and more prosperous London for everyone.”

Jann Baskett, the co-president and chief brand officer of SXSW, added: “Following the success of SXSW Sydney, this is an incredible new opportunity to highlight the elements that make SXSW unique in one of the most vibrant cities in Europe.

“We look forward to forming deeper connections with our overseas community and bringing the conversations that start in Austin all the way to Shoreditch.”

This year’s Austin event was shrouded in some controversy, as several artists pulled out of their performance slots in support of Palestine.

One of SXSW’s Austin sponsors includes the US Army, while the event also has ties to the defense contractor RTX Corporation, formerly known as Raytheon, which is known to supply weapons to the Israeli government.

American rock musician Squirrel Flower kickstarted the boycott, with other artists such as emo band Proper, indie band Mamalarky and North Carolinian singer-songwriter Eliza McLamb later announcing their withdrawal for similar reasons.

The festival responded with a statement accepting the artists’ choice to step down, noting: “We fully respect the decision these artists made to exercise their right to free speech.”

Details about the SXSW London 2025 lineup will be announced later this year, with badges to events due to go on sale in October. Those interested can register for more information at sxswlondon.com .

We're pausing our live coverage for the day, but we'll be back with more updates tomorrow.

You've heard of the transatlantic Special Relationship.

This is the "no limits" partnership - a term coined when Vladimir Putin visited Beijing in February 2022.

It was just days before he ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

A lot's changed for Russia since then, of course. It’s now an international pariah. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is China’s support.

Why? For one, Presidents Xi and Putin share a similar outlook. Both oppose external "interference" in domestic affairs, and long for a "multipolar" world.

There are economic benefits for both, too. But this is not an equal partnership. The power lies with Beijing.

"Because of the war, Russia is in desperate need of any kind of partnership", said Alexandra Prokopenko, a Berlin-based fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, adding that Beijing had provided "a real lifeline" for Moscow.

"China is not only a market for Russian oil and gas, which is the major source of the currency for the Russian budget, but also China’s become a very important source of imports to Russia," she said.

Putin won't like being the junior partner, but it’s a role he’s clearly willing to accept, given the benefits.

Last year, trade between the two nations soared to $240 billion - an increase of more than 25%.

Cheap energy flows one way; cars and telephones come back. But the West fears that's not all Russia’s importing.

The US and others believe Chinese products and dual-use goods, like machine tools and microelectronics, are also fuelling the Kremlin's war machine, by filling critical gaps in its military-industrial.

China denies supplying any actual weaponry, and maintains a neutral stance on Ukraine.

But the assertions have done little to dampen suspicions with US secretary of state Antony Blinken reiterating his "deep concern" today.

Putin's entourage might also raise eyebrows. He’ll be accompanied by his new defence minister, Andrei Belousov, with Putin widely expected to push for more support for Russia's militarised economy.

But despite the "no limits" characterisation of the relationship, analysts say it does have boundaries.

"China knows red lines," Prokopenko said, referring to Washington’s concerns over the extent of Beijing's support.

In her view, the partnership between Xi and Putin should be viewed "as part of a big, big game between the US and China".

In that sense, then, this visit is likely to be more symbolic than anything else. It's the first foreign trip of Putin's new presidential term and signals his priorities.

But in terms of the optics - two strongmen leaders defying Western pressure - one of them is clearly stronger than the other.

These images show Vladimir Putin chairing a security council meeting.

Former defence minister and new secretary of the council Sergei Shoigu was in attendance - pictured in the first image next to chief of the general staff Valery Gerasimov.

Earlier today, Volodymyr Zelenskyy postponed all foreign trips due to the situation in the Kharviv region.

Russia has also claimed to have taken three more settlements in the country - two of which are in the Kharkiv region.

The offensive by Moscow started at the end of last week, and today our military analyst Michael Clarke says Russia has already achieved some of what it intended to do.

He says by targeting the Kharkiv region Moscow's main goal is to "draw Ukrianian forces from elsewhere".

"The Russians are trying to stretch the Ukrainian forces all the way round the front.

"If the Russians get to the village of Lyptsi then they can put Kharkiv under artillery barrage, because it is within range of normal artillery weapons.

"More importantly, the village of Vovchansk, may mark the beginning of a bigger offensive that could go southwards or maybe eastwards to link up with other forces."

Despite fierce fighting in Vovchansk, Clarke says the Ukrainians have slowed Russian advances down, by redirecting their best units from the south.

"Parts of their best brigades have been sent north to stem the tide," he says.

"But the Russians have already achieved what they wanted, which is to draw off some of the best troops and equipment which are fighting in Chavis Yar down in the south, which really mattered to the Ukrainians."

Watch Clarke's full analysis here:

Finland will change its legislation to allow thousands of reservists to patrol the country's border with Russia, should there be a sudden wave of migrants.

"With the changed security situation, we need to complement existing methods with new ways to maintain border security," defence minister Antti Hakkanen said in a statement.

Finland, which joined NATO in April last year, has accused Moscow of weaponising migration against the Nordic nation, which the Kremlin denies.

Finland shut its 1,340km-long border with Russia late last year amid a growing number of arrivals from countries such as Syria and Somalia via Russia.

Away from Kharkiv, and Ukraine has denied Russian claims of progress in the Zaporizhzhia region.

The Ukrainian military dismissed reports that Moscow's forces had taken control of the village of Robotyne in the southern part of the region.

"This information is not true," military spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk was quoted by Ukrinform agency as saying.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned the assassination attempt on Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Russia's offensive in northern Kharkiv has been the focus of much of the reporting on the war in Ukraine over recent days.

Sky News military analyst Michael Clarke has said the aim of Moscow is to draw Ukraine's forces to that area from the south, thus stretching the country's military resources.

And the latest analysis from US thinktank the Institute for the Study of War suggests that the pace of the offensive "appears to have slowed over the past 24 hours".

The group's experts said the pattern of Russian offensive activity in the area was consistent with assessments that Vladimir Putin's forces are prioritising the creation of a "buffer zone" in the international border area over a deeper penetration of Kharkiv Oblast.

It said several Ukrainian military officials reported yesterday that they believed the situation in Kharkiv Oblast was slowly stabilising.

"Drone footage purportedly from Vovchansk shows Russian foot mobile infantry operating within the settlement in small squad-sized assault groups, consistent with Ukrainian reports," the analysis added.

Two people have been killed after a Russian air attack on infrastructure in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, the regional governor has said.

Serhiy Lysak said on  Telegram that there were a number of people who had been injured, but gave no other details.

Dnipro is Ukraine's fourth-largest city, it sits on the Dnipro River  and is around 300 miles from Kyiv.

Within the last hour, the UK's House of Commons addressed an urgent question on "Russia's aggression relating to Ukraine and the situation in Georgia".

Ukraine has come under vast assault from Russia in recent days, while in Georgia there have been riots as Russia asserted its influence to see a controversial "foreign agents" law passed.

The question was tabled by Jim Shannon, a Democratic Unionist Party politician, and answering on behalf of the government was armed forces minister Leo Docherty.

He noted today was "day 811 of Putin's 'special military operation' - an operation that was supposed to last three days, and he has failed in all his objectives".

But the minister went on to say the conflict was "evolving", and confirmed Russia's latest assault on the Kharkiv region, which was "almost certainly" a bid to "divert Ukrainian resources away from other parts of the front line and to threaten Kharkiv - the second-largest city in Ukraine".

He declared the UK would "not be diverted from our commitment to provide Ukraine with the support they need to prevail", pointing to the vast package announced in January and ongoing efforts to support the Ukrainian military.

Turning to Georgia, the minister said the government was observing events "with concern".

"The United Kingdom, along with our partners, is of course committed to the right of peaceful protest, as we are concerned by the introduction of the law" on foreign influence, he said.

He added that the UK was "a close friend of Georgia" and called for "calm and restraint on all sides".
