Sports gators or bandanas will keep the winds and dirt dust out of your face. This brand keeps my face warm during ski season and cool during hiking season! Whether you’re ATVing Aruba or ziplining in Belize , this will come in handy.

🤢 Sea Bands or Dramamine

If you’re anything like me, you’ll want sea bands or some motion sickness relief. Dramamine Non-Drowsy with Natural Ginger is my go-to for planes, cruises, and boats. If you catch a day when the waters are rough, it can easily ruin your snorkeling experience.

Phones have great built-in cameras these days, a GoPro can be really helpful for recording memories without having to worry about your phone all day! I recently invested in a GoPro 10 and it has been a game-changer for making memories.

Plus, you likely don’t want to worry about your phone in the water. It’s easy to strap on your GoPro and capture memories without worrying about a thing.

🌊Floating Waterproof Phone Case

If you don’t want to commit to a GoPro, a waterproof and floating phone case will do the trick! I love being able to capture memories on land and in the water! I didn’t want to bring a good camera on my Stingray City tour in Grand Cayman , so I used this, and it worked great.

☁️ Sand Cloud Quick Dry Towel

I don’t go to any beach without my Turkish quick dry towe l. You’ve likely heard about them from Shark Tank a long time ago. I HATE sand. So, a towel that dries quickly and shakes the sand out easily is the towel for me.

The Dominican Republic has year round riding weather. The most popular times for riding are December through May, where the temperatures are slightly lower than in the summer. June through November is considered the wet season, and may have occasional storms.

Take a video on your phone of the entire bike, do a walk around and film the condition of the chain, fairings, tyres, any bumps, dents and scratches. By doing so, you can’t get caught out and blamed for something you didn’t do when you return it.

Check the wheel bearings, chain, oil, coolant, brakes, clutch and that the handlebars are straight. Tyres need a decent amount of tread and should be suitable for the terrain you’re riding in. Take it for a short test ride and don’t feel pressured or rushed. Go with your gut and if there’s anything that catches your eye, speak to the owners immediately.

This is down to personal preference, where you’re riding and what’s available. For exploring the Dominican Republic, we recommend mid-weight single or twin-cylinder bikes. Large touring bikes will be difficult to handle in city traffic, and mid-weight bikes are sufficient for all the roads you will be travelling in the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic generally has hot weather year round, except in certain mountain areas. Getting wet is usually not a serious problem, and most riders don’t carry rain gear. For riding in most climates, a simple ventilated riding jacket and pants, along with riding boots will suffice.

It’s always better to take your own bike gear over renting or using kit from the rental company. You know your own stuff fits, works and is comfortable – especially your helmet. The last thing you want is to get a few days into your trip and get a headache from a tight lid.

Contact the rental or tour company and ask what luggage the bike comes with. Your bike might come with soft bags, hard boxes, a top box or nothing at all. 

You can often leave the gear you don’t want to take with you on the trip at the rental or tour company’s headquarters. So you can travel on a plane with a larger kit bag and just take the bag and gear you need on the bike. 

The type of luggage you need depends on the type of trip you’re on, how much off-roading you’re doing and how long you’re going for. 

A good option is to go for a waterproof duffle bag and a pair of Rok Straps as this type of luggage setup can be fastened to any bike’s pillion seat and you don’t need racks. And take an additional small and light rucksack for your important gear (camera, passport etc) so you don’t have to worry about it when off the bike.

Companies may offer motorcycle insurance as an optional extra, include it in the price or not offer it at all. This again depends on the country you’re riding in. 

It’s worth getting insurance if you can and ask what the excess is as you will usually be liable for damage to the bike. 

Motorcycle insurance is separate from personal travel insurance. This is incredibly important and you need to be very careful when choosing your personal insurance policy because the fine print often won’t cover you for bikes over 125cc, renting, touring or using a bike as your main mode of transport.

The central highlands offer traffic-free trails through enchanted “cloud” forests, with unbelievable views of the mountains and plantations. The coastal regions have some really special mountain bike routes where you can trace winding rivers, swim underneath waterfalls , and even explore cave systems.

El Choco National Park is the most popular spot for mountain biking in the Dominican Republic with over 30 square miles of stunning nature to be explored. Thick tropical forests can be explored by a number of different mountain biking routes, varying in difficulty. Most are well maintained throughout the year. As you ascend through the hills you’ll come across local farms, mansions, and ranches. The trails here can be tough so make sure you rent the appropriate equipment. The end goal here is the sublime view from the top of El Choco Mountain that will blow you away. The panorama takes in a beautiful view of Cabarete all the way along to Nagua.

2. Cabarete

The area of Cabarete is home to some of the most interesting mountain biking in the DR with great dirt tracks. The scenery here is jaw-dropping, so you might want to account for some extra time in case you find yourself stopping for a photo every ten minutes along the trail. Tracing the meandering Islabon and Yasica rivers is highly recommended - for the breathtaking scenery, of course, but also the chance to spot unique local wildlife. Look out for snakes, iguanas, ravens, and squirrel monkeys (yes, really). Cabarete is also where you’ll find the trailhead for a scenic route through the countryside to the small town of Moca, affording great views over the Cibao Valley. An excellent destination if you want to mix up your mountain biking with kitesurfing .

Bike routes in Dominican Republic

Move about cycling and discover a healthy and original way to arrive on the most beautiful hideouts.

Discovering the Dominican Republic by bike is one of the most unique and unforgettable experiences possible. But it must be taken into account some recommendations: generally, it is not advisable to ride a bike near the big, main cities, nevertheless, it is highly recommendable to do it at rural, mountainous tracks, since they are low-trafficked and the journey will be more delightful.

You should know that the roads are usually dangerous: they are high-trafficked, full of potholes and drivers do not respect cyclists.

There are not many places where you can hire a bike, so it is better to bring your own bicycle. Nevertheless, in the most touristic areas, some hotels and resorts offer this service, as in Las Terrenas and Las Galeras .

There are lots of bike tours , but the best ones are those at Jarabacoa and Cabarete .

We built DR Moto Rides to give others the opportunity of enjoying the Dominican Republic’s curvy roads, the river crossings and waterfalls, the dense forests and the hidden beaches the way we love to: on two wheels. We love riding, and we explore often, both on road and offroad. Every chance we get we invite our friends, and through DR Moto Rides  we hope that you too get a chance to see what’s outside of the beach resorts and the cities, and get to know the deep, the wild, the places few have seen in the  Dominican Republic.

DR Moto Rides is a company born from a love for adventure. We exist for the explorers, the doers, the brave. Our team is here to help you get to the places you haven’t yet seen but need to explore, the hidden gems, the paths less travelled.

Melissa started her motorcycle journey as a motocross rider training under champion Hector “El Mime” Cordero. After several injuries, she transitioned to Enduro where she has become known as one of the best female riders in the country. She later took on ADV riding and has completed a number of rallies and challenges riding bikes of all sizes. She is an extremely capable off-road rider and is known by the friends she rides with for riding last in the group to help others who get stuck. 

Aside from riding motorcycles, Melissa is the Founder of DR Moto Rides, where she is also the operations manager. She enjoys all sorts of outdoor activities and often goes off-roading in Jeeps and UTVs with friends and family. In her non-riding time, Melissa is a markerting specialist, enjoys crossfit and spending time with her dogs and family.

David’s riding journey started with a call to adventure: He bought a motorcycle, paid a pickup truck to take it home and then googled “How to ride a motorcycle”. A few youtube videos later, he was off to see the world. Eventually, the allure of dirt roads led him to buying a dual sport bike, and later joining the local enduro club’s beginners group. These days he’s a much better rider and enjoys both ADV and enduro. 

Aside from riding, David runs a succesful software development company, trains brazilian jiujitsu and recently got his private pilot’s license for airplanes. He is an active member of the Bahá’í community and is working on developing a non-profit supporting projects related to healthcare, animal welfare, education and poverty-alleviation.  When travelling abroad, David always rents motorcycles and goes out to explore. He got involved with DR Moto Rides after realizing there was no place for him to rent ADV bikes in the DR!

Child, 8, dies in dirt bike crash after hitting farm equipment

CASSELTON, N.D. ( KVLY /Gray News) – An 8-year-old child died after a dirt bike crashed into a piece of farm equipment, according to North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Officials say the child was driving the dirt bike around a farm in rural Casselton on Saturday around 5 p.m.

The child lost control of the dirt bike while turning into the yard and hit the farm equipment, authorities said.

According to the crash report, the child was not wearing a helmet.

Lifesaving efforts were made by first responders at the scene before the 8-year-old was airlifted to a hospital in Fargo.

The child died from their injuries.
