The Syros Port

You can easily and comfortably travel by a ferry from Piraeus, Rafina and the surrounding islands to Syros. The journey from Piraeus to Syros takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes on a conventional ferry and about 2 hours on a speedboat. In the summer there are also ferry itineraries from Rafina and the journey lasts about 4 hours. You can now book ferry tickets online for Syros via Aktoploika.gr. If you plan to travel during July and August, it's best if you have booked several days or weeks earlier to avoid hitches. You should also know that round-trip/return ferry tickets come with a considerable discount.

Transportation Syros has got a very good transportation system which makes it an ideal destination for those who choose to use the island buses during their holidays. From very early in the morning till very late at night there are bus itineraries from and to Ermoupoli, the other provinces of Syros, the villages and the beaches. On your way out of the port, you will find the bus stop and the buses to transport you to your chosen destination. If you wish to travel faster, you can get on one of the taxis parked outside the port.  The taxis and radio taxis of the island are always available. Syros has several car and motorbike rental agencies for those who wish to explore the island, the attractions and the beaches in their own vehicle. Bear in mind that Syros is busy island and if you have not made a reservation, you may find it difficult to rent a car or a motorbike, especially in the summer.

If in most of the Greek islands moving with a bus is a necessity, in Syros it's definitely an enjoyment and a cheap way, while, in some cases, it's totally free. The bus station is just beside the port, in Papagou Coast, where 13 buses serve, every half an hour, routes to every settlement in the island. For your movement in Syros City, you can take the local bus for free. You don't have to book your tickets, while routes are too frequent, while you can buy them inside the bus or from the auto-selling machine just beside the port.

A highly prestigious neighbourhood of Ermoupoli is Vaporia, to the east side of the town. Most homes in the neighbourhood are neoclassical mansions, with towering form, sophisticated decoration and marble investments, while overlooking the sea is captivating.  In general, the tour of the island is full of surprises, as it is characterized by the alternations of its landscapes. As one crosses the hinterland, notes the barren mountains to give their position on the fertile plains and the cosmopolitan beaches or the small and secluded coves.

The villages with the traditional architecture and the seaside resorts with their majestic mansions, reveal the uniqueness of this island.

On the other hand, the entertainment can satisfy all the tastes. Apart from the bars and the very good clubs with live music, on the island there is also cinema and theater . However, if you want to try your luck, go to the Casino. Sites that you should note: Azolimnos, Galissas, Kini, Megas Gialos, Finikas, Posidonia, Vari.

Syros' "musts"

• The best beaches are on the north side of the island. Start from Kini and explore on a boat the neighboring beaches, most of them suitable for free camping.
• One of the most beautiful Greek sunsets is waiting for you in "Plakostroto Tavern", on the top of Mytakas mountain. The food and the west horizon's colors during sunset won't be forgotten. Try to be there at least two hours before sunset, to find a nice place to sit.
• Ano Syros village is the island's absolute "must": traditional architecture, countless alleys, whitewashed yards, arches, flowers, picturesque taverns, great view and...young tour guides (small kids, that will voluntarily guide you) are just a few of what you'll meet here. There are two ways to get Ano Syros: through the road or climbing 1000 steps.
• The best ice-cream on the island is served in "Daidali" in Ermoupoli city, made from local milk and served in many flavors.
• Syros is famous for its "lokum delights" and the "halvadopites", but two special and unique products are "San Mihali" cheese, one of the most expensive cheeses, and "skordoloukanika" (garlic-sausages) that add flavor to many recipes.

Don't forget

Parking is a serious problem, especially in Ermoupoli, that becomes heavier every year. You'll have to pay for most of parking-spots, after you have wandered  for a while, and only if you are lucky and find one. You better use the local buses or a scooter.

The island's beaches are very specific and limited in capacity. You'll have to be there early in the morning, if you want to find a place to sit.

Prices in cosmopolitan villages differ a lot, compared to the mainland's. On weekends you better choose a tavern on a small village, as the island is full of Athens residents, as well as visitors from other islands.

First timer’s guide to Syros

When people mention the Greek islands, Santorini sunsets and Mykonos beach clubs instantly come to mind – an exalted (but actually quite hectic) portrait of summer fun.

Those in the know seek out a slice of Greek bliss without the crowds, and one of your best bets lies in lovely little Syros. The administrative capital of the Cyclades group, it is also one of its smallest and most laidback islands.

As the ferry pulls into the port, Syros reveals its resplendent pastel-hued neoclassical homes cascading down the Ermoupoli hill illuminated in the Aegean sun. With a rich history and culture influenced by past rulers and boasting two busy towns (one founded by Catholics, another Orthodox) the sophisticated landscape of Syros offers many surprises.

Best beaches in Syros

Of course, any trip to a Greek island calls up the question of beaches. Despite its relatively small size, Syros boasts several sandy, pretty beaches, which is actually not always a given in Greece. 

Galissas is perhaps the best beach, its crystal blue waters nestled in a sheltered cove on the western coast of Syros, and it’s popular with families. Tuck into something delicious at Iliovasilema as the sun sets (that’s what its name means) across the sea.

Kini is another top option – spreading broadly, with an array of beachfront properties and arguably one of the island’s top seafood restaurants, Allou Yialou . Finikas Beach is the second-largest stretch of sand on the island, also a serious contender, though it gets crowded in summer.

Delfini Beach is pebbled rather than sandy and is a quieter alternative than some of the more popular spots. Next, where to go when you’ve had enough of sand and sun?

Syros in the low season

While the relaxing beaches and quaint villages are at their busiest during the summer, Syros thrives year-round. The capital, Ermoupoli (or Hermoupolis), remains true to its roots as a commercial and political center. 

Originally, it came into existence during the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s with the arrival of a wave of refugees from other Greek islands such as Chios , Psara and Crete .

The new residents transformed the town into a major trading center connecting the east to the west, and contributed their skills to the cultural boom that followed. Schools, printing presses and museums rapidly emerged. Thanks to the rise of the bourgeoisie and flourishing arts, the “City of Hermes” (fittingly named after the Greek god of trade) grew like a glowing amphitheater with neoclassical buildings, crayon-colored mansions and striking churches. Aspects of these various cultures remain in, for example, the cuisine.

Explore Ermoupoli

Wander the lanes of the capital to shop in original handicraft stores and peruse the businesses keeping the wheel of commerce turning in the Cyclades. The monumental Town Hall on the sweeping, cafe-dotted Plateia Miaouli and the blue-domed Agios Nikolaos Church stand out as some of its most iconic sights today. And don’t miss a stroll of the wealthy sea captains’ houses perched on rocks in the Vaporia district.

Top of the world in Ano Syros

Ermopouli was founded as an extension to the already existing medieval Ano Syros settlement. The district stretches magnificently along the top of the Ermoupoli hill and is crowned by the grand Agios Georgios Cathedral . Built by the Venetians in the 13th century as a fortified citadel with narrow streets, marble steps and a circular order, Ano Syros is a maze of alleys to get delightfully lost in. All around, the friendliest felines will pose for you (there’s even a dedicated NGO catering to the roaming cats of Syros). For the best sunset shots head to the summit, where panoramic views of Syros and the neighboring islands seduce further.

Soak up Cycladic culture

A Cycladic pioneer for its artistic contributions, the island has much more to offer than the typical beach vacation formula. 

Apollon Theater for the best venue in the Cyclades

Built in the 19th century as a smaller version of the famed La Scala in Milan, the Apollon Theater is one of Syros’ most important landmarks and a symbol of its cultural prosperity, where impressive performances still take place. Every year, the theater hosts a series of events including Animasyros , a festival of animation, as well as the Festival of the Aegean with a superb classical music line-up.

Markos Vamvakaris Museum for music lovers

Traditional Greek music aficionados should visit the Markos Vamvakaris Museum , celebrating the famous rembetika (Greek blues) musician born here. Simply known as Markos (step aside Madonna, Prince and Beyonce!) he had a colorful life and is seen as the father of Greek rembetika . His haunting bouzouki playing and singing are hallmarks of traditional Greek music.

Food, glorious food

Part of Syros’ claim to fame is its blending of cuisines from all over the Aegean, so when it comes to food, Syros doesn’t disappoint. Gastronomic temptations stretch from morning till midnight, and with a plethora of high concept restaurants and traditional Greek tavernas , prepare to have some of the best meals in the Cyclades. One fine spot is Kouzina , a fail-safe restaurant in the capital featuring the best Syros has to offer.

The island entices with a bit of everything: fish comes fresh and plentiful, while delicious gyros and souvlakis are ever-present. Its specialty foods include Syros’ loukoumi (prepared from water, starch and sugar only), which are similar to the Turkish delight that was brought over in the 19th century by immigrants from Chios. It is famous thanks to the local water which has a tinge of saltiness and it’s still laboriously mixed by hand and boiled in copper cauldrons.

Wild herbs that grow across the island – such as fennel, thyme and sage – feature as well, so fennel pie is another delicacy to seek out. Don’t leave Syros without a sip of tsipouro , the strong raki-like spirit made from pomace (remnants from the wine press).

Costs, safety and timing for your Syros trip

As a result of the commercial activities on the island, there are plenty of hotels and restaurants, but the prices are lower than on the more touristically oriented islands. 

It’s also a safe place to travel, like most Greek islands, with little crime to speak of beyond the odd petty grifter. The sea stays warm until October, so take advantage of the quieter seasons in spring and fall if you’d like to further avoid crowds.

How to reach Syros by sea

To get to Syros, catch one of the daily ferries from Piraeus , the main port of Athens. It’s a 2.5-hour boat ride by high-speed ferry, or a four-hour journey by traditional ferry – you can also take a car on the ferry. Ferries also serve the mainland ports of Lavrio and Rafina (which is close to Athens airport) and take about 1.5 hours.

Being the administrative center of the Cyclades, Syros is well connected by boat with scores of other islands in the Aegean Sea – for example, Mykonos, Tinos and Paros are only an hour away. In general, frequencies and routes expand drastically in high season and can diminish to a couple of times a week in winter. Always check ahead (on a site like Openseas ) and in high season reserve a ticket.

There is also a small airport on Syros with flights serving Athens, and occasionally Thessaloniki, which can be handy if you are short on time and seeking to connect directly from those cities’ airports.

Our hotel in Athens was next to the Acropolis museum and within walking distance of the Acropolis. The Acropolis is a must see. So much history and also a great view of the whole of Athens. The hotel in Syros was placed to an excellent location, very close to the downtown restaurants. Mykonos was nice but windy. We would really suggest it.

Syros is a Mediterranean island with dry summers. There is some precipitation in the autumn and winter, but not for long. The warmest period is July and August, with an average maximum of 26–28 degrees Celsius. The sea water’s temperature is 23–24 degrees Celsius, so it is ideal for swimming and diving. The island is located in the middle of the open sea. As a result, the air is refreshed by the Meltemi in the summer and by the Sirocco in the autumn and winter. Ayios Nikólaos Marina, Kea

It is an important port on the island of Kea, close to beautiful golden beaches and excellent fishing spots. It can accommodate 255 yachts at the same time, with a maximum length of 50 metres. The water depth of the port is up to 8 metres.

Mérikha Marina, Kithnos

This tiny marina can accommodate about 30 yachts up to 60 meters long and has a water depth of 8 meters. Local hotels, restaurants, and lively nightlife areas are in the immediate vicinity.

Paroikia Marina, Paros

Ermoupolis Marina, Siros

Tinos Marina, Tinos

This medium-sized marina locates in Tinos, a city of the same name as the island. The marina, which is 5.5 metres deep, can be moored by yachts up to 60 metres long, for which it offers many services. From here you can easily reach all the sights and beaches of the island.

Day 1. Ermoupolis (Syros) – Tinos

22, 05 km (13, 70 mi) Your first stop could be island of Tinos in the northeast. Everywhere on the island of Tinos, you can see pigeonholes with a beautiful design similar to fortifications, a significant part of which is still in use today. In some small villages, even when houses were built, pigeonholes were patterned. You should visit the museum opened in his birthplace in memory of the sculptor Yannoulis Chalepas. Another important attraction is the Holy Trinity Monastery in Tinos.

Day 2. Tinos – Gavrio (Androsz)

55, 38 km (34, 41 mi) Andros is the northernmost member of the Cyclades. It offers beautiful golden sandy beaches and a wonderful natural environment. During sailing, you can explore the hidden bays on the way with peaceful beaches. The island itself is famous for its diverse natural environment, tourist routes and buzzing nightlife. Regardless of what kind of vacation you are after, you definitely won’t be bored here!

Day 3. Gavrio (Androsz) – Kea

45, 60 km (28, 33 mi) Your next stop could be the island of Kea. In addition to its sandy beaches, this place glories in many attractions. You will also find a medieval castle, churches, and watermills here. Fans of Greek mythologies and legends will also amaze this island. The ancient temples of Athens and Apollo, the holy sites of Demeter and Askiplios, and the famous Holy Theatre are also here.

Day 4. Kea – Kithnos

Day 5. Kithnos – Parikia (Paros)

84, 99 km (52, 81 mi) This section is a bit longer than the previous ones. Sail straight to the island of Paros. The bay of Parikia is very well protected against both Meltemi and Sirocco; its disadvantage is its difficult accessibility. Even as an experienced sailor, it is not easy to moor here: in the west, some cliffs make it difficult to set in. The island itself is famous for its beautiful snow-white marble architecture. You should see the Frankish castle built-in 1260, which has now become part of the city of Parikia. If you are curious about the origins of the abundance of marbles, be sure to check out the marble quarries that have been in operation for thousands of years.

As a sailor, the Skorpios Museum in Aliki is a must-see, where you can visit Benetos Skiadas ’wonderful collection of ship models. Day 6. Parikia (Paros) – Mykonos

47, 04 km (29, 23 mi) Your next stop should be Mykonos, providing entertainment without limits. Do you want a real outdoor sea party? Don’t miss Super Paradise Beach, where guests are invited to party with loud music. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a quiet, peaceful stretch of beach, we recommend the lesser-known Panormos beach on the north side of the island. The family-friendly Platys Gialos beach with lots of hotels can be another excellent choice. Must-see attractions are the windmills found in several places on the island. Day 7. Mykonos – Delos – Ermoupolis (Syros)

41, 08 km (25, 53 mi) On the last day, you can return to Ermoupolis, but before doing so, you should visit the island of Delos. According to Greek mythology, Apollo and Artemis were born here. If you are interested in archaeology, you must definitely explore this tiny island! The House of Dionysus is particularly interesting; it is a luxurious mansion built-in the 2nd century. You will also find a museum exhibiting ancient Greek artefacts and a café here. Leaving from Delos, you can sail back to the island of Syros. You will pass by Rineia, which is a protected archaeological area similarly to Delos.

You must definitely sail around Syros – there are many beaches on the south, while you can admire beautiful sea caves in the north. Ermoupolis, which is the capital, provides countless entertainment opportunities including a casino, museums and a diving school. In the Vaporia quarter next to the port, there are many shops, restaurants and cafés. They have an amazing nightlife as well with many discos and clubs.

"Big Nude Boat" offers a trip to "bare-adise" on a naked cruise from Florida

Like to travel light? One cruise ship soon to set sail from Florida is making sure all you need is the bare necessities – no shoes, no clothes but plenty of service. 

" The Big Nude Boat " will take travelers from Miami to the Caribbean on "an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise," the website says. Setting sail from Feb. 3 through Valentine's Day 2025, the trip offers a "stress-free, clothes-free experience" during which up to 2,300 passengers can roam the ship in the nude while out at sea. 

"It's our pleasure to provide you with the luxury of deciding what NOT to wear," Bare Necessities Tour and Travel says.

Passengers won't be allowed to be naked when the ship is docked, but can ditch their usual attire once they are anchored or out on the water. And when clothing is optional, standard nudist etiquette must be abided by, the website says. When sitting, nude passengers must either wear a thong or sit on a towel or some kind of fabric. And while the self-serve buffet on the pool deck is a clothes-free area, passengers must be dressed for all dining room meals – and no, bathrobes don't count. 

Photos and videos will also not be permitted unless all individuals being documented give consent. 

"The Big Nude Boat" is just one of the cruises offered by Bare Necessities, which says on its website that the company has been "working to break down the barriers against social nudity and make clothing-optional vacationing a viable and acceptable option for all." 

"Social nudity is not a sexual activity, and we strive to dispel the misconception that it is anything but natural and beautiful," the company says. "We have made strides in the acceptance of nude vacationing and our wide range of cruise charters are a testament to our success."
