An ambassador of true Indian music,  Kaushiki Chakraborty  is undoubtedly one of the best. Trained by her father Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, Kaushiki is celebrated with national and international awards. In this concert, she would be accompanied by equally talented artists like Tanmay Deochake on Harmonium, Sandeep Ghosh on Tabla, and Murad Ali on one of the most ancient Indian instruments, a Sarangi!

Kaushiki Chakraborty ’s astonishing khayal vocal technique is the result of years of intense training. She spent much of her childhood living at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, one of India’s premiere music institutions, while her father Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty worked there as a khayal scholar.

Staff at the academy are said to recall how she would respond to melodic phrases at six months old, and how she was singing tarana and bhajan before the age of two. In her words, “by the time I was five my singing made sense…Such was my addiction that it was beyond my grandparents to tame and make me sit with books”. Quickly hailed as a prodigy, she entered the concert arena early to great acclaim, performing widely while also earning a Masters in Philosophy from Jadavpur University.

She hails from the Patiala gharana, known for a strong Islamic influence and elaborate melodic ornamentation, and has become one of the first female singers from this tradition to receive international recognition. Today she focuses on Hindustani classical music, but has also sung in films and recorded popular songs. She also leads Sakhi, a diverse group of female musicians and dancers, explaining that the project “is about understanding, from a female perspective, the diverse culture of India through all its traditional musical forms.”

Vidushi Kaushiki Chakraborty is today one of the leading Indian classical vocalists and the daughter of Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty. Groomed at Sangeet Research Academy, she is today considered the torchbearer of the Patiala gharana. At age ten, she started learning Indian classical music at the academy of Jnan Prakash Ghosh who was also her father's guru, later joined ITC Sangeet Research Academy from where she graduated in 2004. Vijay Kichlu, director of the academy fine tuned her skill in rendering Khyal. She also trained under her father at his Shrutinandan school of music in Kolkata. ​She has not only specialized in rendering of Khayals and Thumri but she has also learned South Indian Classical music from Dr Balamurali Krishna. She has won many awards and has performed widely in prestigious festivals such as Dover Lane, Sawai Gandharva, ITC Sangeet Sammelan etc. as well as across the globe.

Tanmay Deochake is one of the most sought out ,versatile and renowned Harmonium players in India. He received his Indian classical music training at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya , where he learnt in the age-old Indian traditional gurukul format under the guidance of Pt. Pramod Marathe. Tanmay has also had the privilege of receiving guidance from his gurus Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar and Pt. Suresh Talwalkar. Tanmay is able to seamlessly compliment vocals, Tabla solo and other indian classical instruments with his harmonium. He has performed world over and accompanied revered artists like Pt. Swapan Chaudhari, Ut. Zakir Hussain, Smt. Ashwini Bhide, Smt. Arti Anklikar, Ut. Rashid Khan and Kaushiki Chakraborty . His understanding of aesthetics and demonstration of versatility comes through as he is constantly pushing the boundary to expand his creativity with his instrument.

Murad Ali Khan is a sixth generation sarangi player of the Moradabad Gharana. The intensive training he had under his grandfather Ustad Siddique Ahmad Khan and father Ustad Ghulam Sabir Khan has stood him in good stead, and he is presently regarded as one of the leading sarangi players of the younger generation.

Sandip Ghosh was initiated to the art of Tabla under the tutelage of Pt. Gobinda Bose. Later on he has been taking taalim for the last 18 years from Pt. Anindo Chatterjee. As a performer, Sandip has performed all over the globe and in most of the significant concerts like Doverlane Music Conference, Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav, Darbar Festival to name a few. Sandip has accompanied with several distinguished artists like Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty, Ud. Shahid Parvez, Ud. Shujaat Khan, Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Vid. Kaushiki Chakrabarty and many more. Sandip has received prestigious awards like The President’s award, Gold Medalist in South Asian Music Festival (twice), National Scholarship from Govt. of India, Empaneled with ICCR and Spic Macay.

Kaushiki Chakraborty (born 24 October 1980) is an Indian classical vocalist and the daughter of Ajoy Chakraborty. Groomed at Sangeet Research Academy, she is one of the exponents of Patiala gharana. Her repertoire covers Khyals and 'semi-classical' Thumris. She is the recipient 2005 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music in the Asia-Pacific category. She has held performances with her husband Parthasarathi Desikan.

She is the daughter of Chandana Chakraborty and the renowned Indian classical music singer Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty. From the age of two she had an interest in music. She accompanied her father on world tours of music performances since the late 1980s. She sung her first song in public, a tarana, at age 7, at the Calcutta Rowing Club. At age ten, she started learning Indian classical music at the academy of Jnan Prakash Ghosh who was also her father's guru, later joined ITC Sangeet Research Academy from where she graduated in 2004 and was also groomed by her father. Vijay Kichlu, director of the academy fine-tuned her skill in rendering Khyal. She also trained under her father at his Shrutinandan School of music in Kolkata. She has not only specialized in rendering of Khyals and Thumri but she has also learned South Indian Classical music from Vidwan Balamurali Krishna from 2002. She completed her schooling at Patha Bhavan school, Kolkata. In 2002, she graduated from the Jogamaya Devi College, an affiliated undergraduate women's college of the University of Calcutta, in Kolkata with a first class degree in philosophy. She did her master's degree in philosophy from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, with top honours.

Chakraborty has participated in many major live concert shows. Apart from rendering Khyals in her performances she has also occasionally adopted contemporary form of Indian pop music. She performed at the Dover Lane Music Conference from the age of 20 and continued participating for the next 5 years. In her recitals she presents a mature and often with rhythmical swing succeeded by unrestrained taans in three and-a-half octaves. In the two-day celebration in honour of vocalist Kishori Amonkar in recognition of her 60 years contribution to music held at Pune on 14 February 2011, Kaushiki rendered raga Todi. Two other artists, Kalapini Komkali, daughter and disciple of Pt. Kumar Gandharva and Nandini Bedekar of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, also rendered bandishes in the same raga at the same venue during the morning session. Bharat Kamat on the tabla and Suyog Kundalkar on the harmonium provided support to all three artists. In the unique musical sessions organized by Mumbai's National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), ragas in different time-cycles were presented on 18 September 2011 by three vocalists which included Kaushiki, Ulhas Kashalkar, and Devaki Pandit. This rendering was a departure from the normal evening concerts, and the ragas were sung in time periods appropriate to each raga, starting from early morning till evening.

In the early stages of her career, in August 2003, Chakraborty gave a live performance in London which was released as the record "Pure". Her father had accompanied her on harmonium on this occasion. She also performed at the ITC Sangeet Sammelan in India, the Spring Festival of Music (California), Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Sangeet Mahotsav and Parampara Program (Los Angeles).For her musical performances she has been acclaimed as "torchbearer of the Patiala tradition".

Chakraborty hosts a weekly talk-show with singers in the entertainment channel Ruposhi Bangla. The talk-show named "Gaan-Golpo ar Gaan" (Songs, Stories and Songs), aired on Sundays, presents music and gossip. She presents Bengali songs such as Classical, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrulgeeti, Folk music, Toppa, Adhunik, Bangla Bands, Film songs, and Remixes. Her guests who have appeared on this show are Banasree Sengupta, Subhamita, Lopamudra Mitra, music director Joy Sarkar, her father, Ajoy Chakraborty, as the guests

Chakraborty has formed an exclusive women's musical group called the "Sakhi" (meaning friend) which is a forerunner in classical music in the country to "celebrate womanhood" and as a dedication to the famous mythological and historical woman of India – Ganga, Saraswati, Durga, Lakshmi, Draupadi, Kunti, Sita, Radha and Meera. The first programme of the group was planned to be held on 20 January 2015 at Kalamandir, Mumbai. Kaushiki was the vocalist and the other members of this group were Shaoni Talwalkar on the tabla, Mahima Upadhyay on the pakhwaj, Debopriya Chatterjee on flute, Nandini Shankar on the violin while the Kathak dance performance was to be performed by Bhakti Deshpande. They are daughters or grand daughters or disciples of famous Hindustani musicians.[15] Chakraborty presented this musical ensemble with her group at the Carnegie Hall in October 2015; the programme was of 90 minutes duration

Chakraborty has been the recipient of many awards. She received the Jadu Bhatta award in 1995, favourably mentioned and appreciated after her opening song at the 27th annual ITC Sangeet Sammelan in New Delhi in 1998, and received Outstanding Young Person in 2000. She received the BBC Award (2005) for outstanding achievement in music when she was 25 years old. On receiving this award she was praised "as one of the brightest emerging artists in Indian vocal music" and as critic Ken Hunt said "we are talking superlatives". BBC also made a short film featuring her musical journey – which covered people and places linked with her music. She has also received Sangeet Natak Academy's Ustad Bismillah Khan Puraskar 2010 for Hindustani Vocal Music and the 2013 Aditya Birla Kalakiran Puraskar. she has also received "Shera Bangali Samman 2017" by ABP ANANDA.

Kaushiki chakraborty.

Kaushiki Chakraborty is the daughter of the great Indian vocalist, Ajoy Chakraborty, and has been described by the BBC as “one of the brightest emerging artists in Indian vocal music.” Within India, she has received some of the highest honors in Hindustani music, including the 2010 Ustad Bismillah Khan Puraskar award. She has also been a pioneer in promoting female artists in India, in particular through her all-female classical music group Sakhi, which performed at Carnegie Hall in 2015. Ms. Chakraborty has also promoted folk and regional styles in India, particularly from her native Bengal. She has performed in Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia, with world-class Hindustani musicians such as Rakesh Chaurasia, Purbayan Chatterjee, and Satyajit Talwalkar, as well as her father Ajoy Chakraborty. 

On  Sunday, September 16th,  Chakraborty, accompanied by Ojas Adhiya (tabla), will perform a concert at Old Cabell Hall. On  Monday, September 17th,  the artists will hold a free workshop with students and faculty, on aesthetics and improvisation in Hindustani music. 

This residency is generously co-sponsored by: Alumni Association; Center for Global Inquiry + Innovation; Department of Anthropology; Institute of the Humanities & Global Culture; International Studies Office; MESALC; Office for Diversity & Equity; Office of the Dean of Students; South Asia Center; Vice President for Student Affairs; Vice Provost for the Arts.

Free tickets as well as will call confirmed tickets will be available at the door starting at 6pm on Sunday (one hour prior to concert start) If there is inclement weather, we will follow the UVA schedule posted at the UVA Operations Status Board .

Old Cabell Hall  is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda ( map ). Parking is available in the  Central Grounds parking garage  on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Road, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner.

Free tickets as well as previously reserved tickets will be available at the door starting at 6pm. (one hour prior to concert start)

In the case of inclement weather, we will follow the UVA schedule posted on the UVA Status Board .

A two-act Marathi play that has created a history for last 20 years! A drama that presents the point of view of Nathuram Godse who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi. It is based on the actual statement of Nathuram Godse which he gave in court at the Red Fort, Delhi during his trial. Though the reasons and explanations were not made accessible to the public, the story of Nathuram explores the drama that unfolded during the period, marking an important incident in the history of India. Starring Sharad Ponkshe in the lead, the play states facts rather than supporting a narrative, making it a must-watch for all.
