Social Distortion Announce 2023 North American Tour Dates

Pop rock band Social Distortion have announced dates for a Summer 2023 North American tour.

The trek kicks off on June 30 in Canby, Oregon, and currently is scheduled to conclude on August 1 in Norfolk, Virginia. The band will receive support from The Bell Rays .

Social Distortion are yet to release any new material since 2011's Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes .

The show was very tame and laid back. I think everyone was waiting for social d to get exited. Social d never came on. I drove from Kingston got a hotel in Toronto had to feed myself while I was there. between that and two days of missed wages the trip cost me approximately $500. I did not pay this money to see flogging Molly or the devil makes three. I understand that people need to work in a safe environment but I feel I am owed at least the price of my tickets back.

Mike and the boys knocked it out of the park again. Third time seeing them always a good show. Social Distortion continues provide great show with new and proven songs. Social D needs a break to record the new album! Tour diehards for real!

AMAZING rock show! The two opening acts were great, really got the crowd involved and amped up for Social D. Social D came out guns blazin' played some stuff from all points of their career and hit us with some new stuff from the upcoming album. Clean loud sound....the crowd was rockin the whole time....very minimal downtime between bands. Just an overall amazing experience and cant wait til Mike & co. Come back thru.

Social Distortion have a busy 2024 ahead, with frontman Mike Ness and company announcing the rescheduled dates for the legendary punk band’s previously postponed North American tour with support from The Bellrays.

The Fall 2024 outing will follow Social D’s recently announced co-headlining Spring 2024 US run with Bad Religion , The shows with the Bellrays will kick off September 13th in Seattle and running through October 22nd in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

General ticket sales are ongoing via Ticketmaster , and fans can look for deals or get tickets to sold-out dates via StubHub , where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.

The tour with The Bellrays was originally set to take place this past summer, but was postponed when Ness revealed that he had been diagnosed with tonsil cancer in June. Ness alluded to his improved health in a Facebook post regarding the upcoming tour: “Words can’t describe how happy I am to be back onstage doing what I love.”

Before that, Ness offered a positive health update on Instagram about a month ago.

“I finished 6 weeks of chemo and radiation last week and now can solely focus on rehabilitation to get strength back in my voice and all the muscles in throat and neck that have been disrupted from surgery etc,” he wrote at the time. “I am keeping my eyes on the prize to be back in studio to finish album and back onstage sooner than later.”

While Social Distortion will be playing their 1983 debut album Mommy’s Little Monster in full during their co-headlining run with Bad Religion, it is unclear if they will do the same on their fall outing.

Completely flat stage through the plains of Emilia-Romagna.

Castiglione delle Stiviere - Desenzano del Garda TUDOR ITT

The second time trial test is predominantly flat with several undulations within it and an elevation gain of roughly 250 metres. The riders cross a few villages and a series of minor ups and downs. The road is almost constantly slightly downhill heading towards the shore of Lake Garda.

Manerba del Garda - Livigno (Mottolino)

Stage 15, arguably the hardest of the entire Giro, sees the start of a tough week of mountains. The route from Manerba del Garda to Livigno amounts to 220 kilometres and takes in an elevation gain of 5,700 metres.

Livigno - Santa Cristina Val Gardena/St. Christina in Gröden (Monte Pana)

A high mountain fraction broken up by the Adige and Isarco valleys, basically a 3-part stage: mountain, with Foscagno Stelvio (this year’s Cima Coppi, the highest point of the race); plain, from Prato allo Stevio until shortly after Bolzano; mountain, with the ascent of Passo Pinei and the finish in Val Gardena.

Selva di Val Gardena/Wolkenstein in Gröden - Passo del Brocon

Intense climbing stage with brutal amount of elevation gain despite its short distance. The route climbs from the start on the Passo Sella, followed by a flat section in the Fassa and Fiemme Valleys all the way to Predazzo.

Fiera di Primiero - Padova

This stage features a single, rather modest climb in the opening half of the route (the KOM of Lamon) followed by about 150 km of slightly downhill false flat.

Mortegliano - Sappada

The stage begins by riding up the Tagliamento Valley, heading north and crossing the towns of San Daniele del Friuli, Forgaria nel Friuli and Peonis. After Tolmezzo, the succession of climbs leading to the finish line begins: Passo Duron, Sella Valcalda and Cima Sappada.

Alpago - Bassano del Grappa

Relatively flat opening at Lake Santa Croce, heading downhill to Vittorio Veneto and the Muro di Ca' del Poggio, which leads into the Prosecco area. After crossing the Piave River, the route reaches the slopes of the brutal Monte Grappa, which will be tackled twice.

Roma - Roma

The final stage is divided into two parts: the first is the peloton’s outing to Lido di Castel Fusano on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's 16 kilometres one way and another 16 kilometres back before the stage enters its second and final part, the finishing circuit (8 laps) of 9.5 kilometres, which very much resembles last year’s lap through the eternal city.

Venaria Reale - Torino

Stage 1 kicks off in the suburbs of Turin and finishes in the centre. After a flat initial phase of around 45 km, the riders will tackle three climbs.

San Francesco al Campo - Santuario di Oropa (Biella)

Challenging stage featuring the first summit finish. After a flat run-up across Canavese and Vercellese areas the pink caravan will reach Valdengo, where a succession of minor climbs begins.

Novara - Fossano

Predominantly flat stage with some minor ups and downs in the central part.

Acqui Terme - Andora

A fairly flat stage, the only obstacles are the Col di Melogno climb (8 km at around 5%) midway through the stage and the final Capo Mele, which is tackled from the same side as during the Milano-Sanremo.

Genova - Lucca

The riders leave the city of Genova and travel along the coast on the Aurelia state road in the first 50 km. The stage has just two climbs on the menu.

Torre del Lago Puccini (Viareggio) - Rapolano Terme

A demanding stage characterised by a hilly second part and three gravel sectors totalling almost 12 km. The first two are shared with the Strade Bianche, the third is a new one.

Foligno - Perugia TUDOR ITT

Individual time trial clearly divided into two parts. The first 32 km, flat and largely non-technical, lead to the foot of Umbria’s capital city of Perugia. The riders then tackle the ascent of Casaglia, with gradients up to 16%.

Spoleto - Prati di Tivo

Short stage with no flat ground to play with and plenty of elevation gain.

Avezzano - Napoli

Stage clearly divided into two parts. The first 180 km are the run-up to a demanding finale with short and punchy climbs.

Pompei - Cusano Mutri (Bocca della Selva)

The stage begins calmly with the first part of the race as good as flat.

Foiano di Val Fortore - Francavilla al Mare

Stage clearly divided into two parts. The first crosses the Apennines to Termoli and the second, entirely flat, is played out along the ss.16 state road and the shores of the Adriatic Sea.

Martinsicuro - Fano

A flat stage for the first 50 km and then studded with walls and hairpin bends to the finish. After a rather simple initial part along the Adriatic coast, the stage moves away from the sea to face repeated short, steep climbs that come in the final two thirds of the route.

Social Distortion Announce Rescheduled North American Tour for Fall 2024

Social D's Mike Ness recently completed six weeks of chemotherapy and radiation in his fight against tonsil cancer

Social Distortion have a busy 2024 ahead, with frontman Mike Ness and company announcing the rescheduled dates for the legendary punk band’s previously postponed North American tour with support from The Bellrays.

The Fall 2024 outing will follow Social D’s recently announced co-headlining Spring 2024 US run with Bad Religion , The shows with the Bellrays will kick off September 13th in Seattle and running through October 22nd in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The tour with The Bellrays was originally set to take place this past summer, but was postponed when Ness revealed that he had been diagnosed with tonsil cancer in June. Ness alluded to his improved health in a Facebook post regarding the upcoming tour: “Words can’t describe how happy I am to be back onstage doing what I love.”

Before that, Ness offered a positive health update on Instagram about a month ago.

“I finished 6 weeks of chemo and radiation last week and now can solely focus on rehabilitation to get strength back in my voice and all the muscles in throat and neck that have been disrupted from surgery etc,” he wrote at the time. “I am keeping my eyes on the prize to be back in studio to finish album and back onstage sooner than later.”

While Social Distortion will be playing their 1983 debut album Mommy’s Little Monster in full during their co-headlining run with Bad Religion, it is unclear if they will do the same on their fall outing.

The 2024 Giro d'Italia is well underway after over a week of racing and is far from won despite what the GC standings might seem.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) has been unstoppable so far in his Giro debut and remains the overwhelming favourite to take home the maglia rosa , though he may still face competition from other podium favourites including Dani Martinez (Bora-Hansgrohe), Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) and Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale).

The Slovenian quickly stamped his authority on the Corsa Rosa on stage 2 by winning at the summit finish in Oropa, extended his lead by winning the stage 7 individual time trial, and then won his third stage the next day at Prati di Tivo.

Sprint favourites taking on the race include Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek), Caleb Ewan (Jayco-AlUla), Fabio Jakobsen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL), Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep), and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), while other star riders include Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) and Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep).

While Pogačar has been the big winner of the Giro so far, the race has also seen triumphs from sprinters Milan and Merlier, as well as breakaway wins from Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) and Valentin Paret-Peintre (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), the latter winning on the Bocca della Selva summit finish of stage 10.

Stages 11 and 13 bring more chances for the sprinters to do their thing on largely flat days, while stage 12 brings a hilly challenge on the road to Fano. The GC battle is expected to kick off again at the weekend with a 31.2km time trial and a mountain stage to Livigno

The 2024 Giro d'Italia will be aired for free in several countries around the world, including S4C in Wales, EITB in the Basque Country, VTM in Belgium, SBS in Australia, and RAI in Italy.

Russia's defence ministry claims Russian forces have taken control of 12 settlements in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region in the past week.

Moscow has claimed a series of gains since its forces launched a new offensive in Kharkiv's north last Friday - in a move which surprised Ukrainian soldiers stationed in the area.

As we've been reporting, Vladimir Putin said earlier that his troops were creating a "buffer zone" in Kharkiv to protect Russian border regions.

Earlier we reported Vladimir Putin's claims that there are no plans to capture the city of Kharkiv as his forces continue to attack the region (see 11.17am post).

Our defence and security analyst Michael Clarke   says Russian forces would not be able to take the city even if they tried as they "just don't have the forces to concentrate on big cities".

"It would take them months of grinding warfare to actually conquer Kharkiv," he said. 

"Unless the Ukrainians somehow open the gates and let them in, which they won't."

Moscow's forces are pushing towards the village of Lyptsi, he says, which is about 15 miles from Kharkiv city and well within artillery range.

"If they get there, they could certainly start to bombard the city and Ukrainians would have to do something about that," he said, adding they are also targeting the key town of Vovchansk, possibly to try to link up with forces further south.

While capturing the city of Kharkiv remains a remote possibility, Clarke says they can draw Ukrainian forces away from the south, as they "already have done".

Buffer zone 'propaganda'

Mr Putin claims the Kharkiv offensive is to create a buffer zone between the two countries, so Ukraine cannot attack regions within Russia.

Belgorod, in particular, has reportedly been the target of Ukrainian drone attacks in recent weeks, but Clarke says any buffer zone is unlikely to make much difference.

"At the moment, he's got a boundary of about three miles and the Ukrainians are getting American missiles," Clarke says. 

"The missiles come with maximum ranges of about 170, 180 miles. It's neither here nor there." 

The Ukrainians have got "many ways" of attacking Belgorod and Rostov, he said. 

"So, I think it's more for propaganda purposes inside Russia - that Putin is saying 'we're having a border area to reassure the public in Belgorod and Rostov that these cross-border raids and these missile strikes might not take place in the future'."

UK is 'de facto' participant

Meanwhile, Russia's ambassador to the UK has said Britain is a de facto a participant in the Ukraine war (see our 12.32pm post).

Clarke says this is the "truest thing he's said today".

"The British government has made it very clear we're helping the Ukrainians with intelligence and, where appropriate, we've done it with our aerial intelligence," he said.

"So, the Russian ambassador is telling me something I've known for about the last two and a bit years."

Volodymyr Zelenskiy has waved through two potentially key bits of legislation around service in the military. 

Firstly, the Ukraine president has this afternoon signed a law allowing some categories of convicts to serve in the army.

He also signed off a separate law increasing fines for those not abiding by army mobilisation rules.

Ukraine is trying to fill a shortfall in manpower some military analysts say is Kyiv's biggest challenge against a much larger enemy.

Recruiting convicts is only expected to boost numbers by around several thousand, from a possible pool of up to 20,000 convicts, senior lawmaker David Arakhamia said earlier this month.

The bill would not allow people convicted of the most serious crimes to enlist, lawmaker Oleksiy Honcharenko said.

People convicted of the premeditated murder of two or more people, rape, sexual violence, crimes against national security and serious corruption violations would remain barred.

"It's no secret that the mobilisation resource of our enemy is huge, and therefore we should use all available opportunities to fight back armed aggression," a note attached to the bill said.

"Some of these people are motivated and patriotic citizens who are ready to redeem themselves before society on the battlefield."

Russia's ambassador to the UK has just said Britain is a de facto participant in the Ukraine war.

Andrei Kelin told Russia's Rossiya-24 state TV channel the UK is considered as such because it supplies Kyiv with weapons and shares real-time intelligence.

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has made a similar claim previously.

The US is "playing with fire" over its "indirect war" with Russia, a top diplomat has warned.

Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov told the TASS news agency: "We warn that they are playing with fire. They have long been in a state of indirect war with the Russian Federation."

His comments reflect Russian concern over the West's ongoing support for Ukraine, with recent comments viewed by Moscow as an aggressive shift.

The UK's foreign secretary Lord Cameron said earlier this month Ukraine has a right to use the weapons provided by Britain to strike targets inside Russia - while US secretary of state Antony Blinken made similar comments during a visit this week in Kyiv.

"They somehow fail to realise that, in order to satisfy their own geopolitical ideas, they are approaching a phase in which it will be very difficult to control what is happening and to prevent a dramatic crisis," Mr Ryabkov added, referring to the US.

"This rhetoric, this drumming, this constant baiting of their allies to help Ukraine even more, to expand their support, shows only one thing: people are living, as they themselves say, 'in a box'," he said.

He said this is a "great risk" as it is "impossible to get through" to the Americans.

Russia has shown "no indication" of trying to restrain its forces from "brutally victimising" Ukrainian civilians and committing war crimes, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

It comes as internal affairs minister Ihor Klymenko claimed Russian forces have executed civilians and taken others captive in Vovchansk, in Kharkiv region, which has been hit by several rounds of airstrikes.

The ISW said "the detention and summary execution of civilians is a war crime" and "emblematic of Russian forces' behaviour in all occupied Ukrainian territories".

"Russian military massacres like the massacres in Bucha and Izyum are a microcosm of Russian atrocities throughout Russian-occupied areas," the ISW added. 

"Russian attempts to seize major population centres like Kharkiv city do not just threaten Ukraine with operationally significant setbacks but also with war crimes and violations that accompany Russian occupation."

Vladimir Putin has just claimed capturing the city of Kharkiv is not part of Russia's current plan.

Instead, Moscow intends to create a "buffer zone" for Russia's own security, he said.

Speaking at a news conference in China, Mr Putin, who also says all operations are going according to plan, claimed Kyiv is to blame for the attack in Kharkiv.

"As for what is happening in the Kharkiv direction. This is also their [Ukraine's] fault, because they shelled and continue, unfortunately, to shell residential neighbourhoods in the border areas, including Belgorod," he added.

"Civilians are dying there. It's obvious. They are shooting directly at the city centre, at residential areas. 

"And I said publicly that if this continues, we will be forced to create a security zone, a buffer zone. That is what we are doing."

As we've been reporting, Ukraine says the situation in Kharkiv region - where Russian forces have been mounting new attacks - has "stabilised".

But Volodymyr Zelenskyy has admitted Russia has advanced as far as 10km in one area, as Moscow appears to be expanding the front line to stretch Ukraine's forces.

As the situation around Kharkiv remains "highly dramatic", Germany's foreign minister says Ukraine needs more long-range weapons to cut off Russian supply routes.

While Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the situation has "stabilised" (see our 9.04am post), Russian troops have advanced as much as 10km in one area.

This has put added pressure on Ukraine's already-stretched forces.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of foreign ministers in Strasbourg, Annalena Baerbock said it is important to provide weapons "that can be used over medium and long distances".

"We are also working with other partners on this," she said, adding it is overall an "extremely difficult situation".

Germany is Ukraine's second-biggest supplier of weapons, but Chancellor Olaf Scholz has so far balked at delivering long-range Taurus missiles.

The West has generally prohibited the use of its weapons on Russian territory, but Moscow claims some of those arms have been used within the country's borders.

Kyiv is preparing troops to defend the northern region of Sumy, according to the commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces.

Oleksandr Syrskyi says he expects fighting to intensify as Russia continues to attack Kharkiv - with Sumy the next possible target, roughly 170km northwest.

Russia's attack on Kharkiv has expanded the area of active fighting by almost 70km, he added, which was designed to force Ukraine to divert stretched resources to the region.

Vladimir Putin is in the northern province of Harbin today as part of his official visit to China.

Today, he's said Russia's strategic alliance with China in the energy sector will strengthen further - adding Moscow is ready to supply clean energy to its neighbour.

Speaking at a Russia-China Expo, Mr Putin said the close relationship between the two countries is a guarantor of energy security.
