Martin LX1E Little Martin review

A three-quarter size acoustic that sounds bigger than most of its competition.

Martin LX1E Little Martin review

Guitar World Verdict

This is a well made travel-size guitar, with a great pickup system that only suffers a touch acoustically from having a smaller body.

Great sound for the size

Easy and comfortable to play

Great amplified sound

Suffers a little in the low-end

Lacks projection of a full-size acoustic

The Martin LX1E Little Martin has been one of the most popular acoustic guitars of the last 10 years, largely thanks to Ed Sheeran’s prolific use of one early on in his career, before his relationship with Lowden began.

The LX1E is a 3/4 size acoustic electric guitar , boasting a solid sitka spruce top, high pressure laminate back and sides, 23” scale, Richlite fingerboard and a Fishman Sonitone pickup. It’s smaller than a regular acoustic guitar, which makes it ideal for travelling with, or for children (we even rate it as a great acoustic guitar for beginners ). It also comes shipped with a padded gig bag.

Martin LX1E neck

The 23” scale does mean that the frets are slightly closer together than they would be on a full-size acoustic, but the nut width is 1 11/16” meaning the string spacing is the same as a full-size. As someone who normally plays a dreadnought, I found the LX1E to be comfortable to play - it starts getting a little cramped around the 12th fret and above, but you’re probably not going to be spending much time around there. Chords and melody lines are just as easy to strum or fingerpick as they would be on any other guitar.

It’s likely that beginners, children or those of smaller stature will find it comfortable, but they aren’t the only intended users. If you’re an experienced player, then the LX1E is a great guitar to take with you on the road, perhaps with work or on tour etc.

It’s worth noting how well made the guitar feels as well. It’s a high-quality guitar, and it’s likely to last a long time. The tuners hold the tuning well, and the construction all seems well put together.

If you’re an experienced player, then the LX1E is a great guitar to take with you on the road

The sound of the guitar, admittedly, does reflect the size of it to some extent. It doesn’t project as much volume as a full size acoustic, but then again, you wouldn’t expect it to. That said, the Martin LX1E is fairly loud for its size - it’s louder than most other smaller guitars, and it sounds clear and defined. Martin ships it with 13 gauge acoustic guitar strings , which really helps with volume and tone. The solid top also helps it resonate more, plus it’s going to sound better the more you play it, as you break in the top over the years.

Whilst there is a bit of that boxiness commonly associated with smaller-bodied acoustics, it’s got a fairly strong frequency response. It doesn’t throw out lots of low end, but the bass is definitely still there, and the shape of it helps it really cut through in the middle and treble frequencies. It responds well to playing dynamically too, so it’s suitable for a variety of different players, whether you’re playing in a band, or performing as a singer-songwriter.

View of Martin LX1E sound hole and pickup

Plugged in, the Martin LX1E performs just as well as any other guitar with an undersaddle piezo system, which means that it can keep up with much bigger and more expensive guitars utilizing the same pickup. It’s a good sounding pickup, and you’d have to spend a fair bit more to beat it, in our opinion - add some EQ and reverb via an acoustic amp or mixing desk and you’ll have a decent amplified acoustic sound that’s certainly good enough for gigs and open mic nights.

There’s no preamp system on the top of the guitar like there used to be - instead you’ve got a volume and tone knob discreetly positioned in the soundhole. It’s easy enough to get to them, but it might take some getting used to if you’re adjusting them a lot whilst playing. This also means that the top of the guitar looks cleaner, though the tuner that used to be in the old preamp was pretty handy.

Martin LX1E Little Martin review: Verdict

There’s a reason why the Martin LX1E is one of the most popular small-bodied acoustic guitars - it sounds great, particularly plugged in, and it’s really comfortable to play. It doesn’t quite have the projection and low end of a full-sized acoustic, but it’s a superb choice if you’re seeking a quality, compact acoustic for travelling or gigging.

Martin LX1E Review: Is This the Little Powerhouse Acoustic You’ve Been Looking For?

The Martin LX1E may be best known as one of pop icon Ed Sheeran’s main acoustic-electric instruments.

This small, easily transported acoustic-electric boasts the iconic Martin Acoustic branding and aesthetic that has made them arguably the most popular acoustics of all.

Much like their larger LX2E model, the LX1E is a far more affordable option than most all other Martin offerings.

For over 180 years, C.F. Martin Guitars has been producing the very best acoustic guitars out there.

This LX1E makes it even easier for you to get your hands on one, whether you’re a beginner or pro.

Martin’s LX1E is built around two major concepts: building a high quality travel guitar and providing a gig-ready acoustic.

With exception of the Backpacker, the LX1E is Martin’s smallest guitar, making it light and easy on the player regardless of size or experience. Plus, it packs a Fishman Sonitone pickup letting you plug in and play when the need arises.

This versatility is what makes the Martin LX1E such an appealing option. It’s suited for a wide variety of roles, whether it’s world wide touring like Ed Sheeran, or bed room practicing.

Who Would Get the Most Out It?

The sub-$500 price tag makes the Martin LX1E a more high end beginner option. On the other hand, it’s an incredibly affordable gig-ready guitar for more experienced players as well.

These two statements come together to show that the Martin LX1E is really a “one size fits all” solution. That being said, the smaller body size does it make easier for beginners or players of small stature.

Martin’s quality control and trusted name make it an easy investment for even the least educated acoustic guitar shopper.

What Comes With The Martin LX1E?

Unlike some of its competitors, the Martin LX1E is not currently sold as part of a beginner bundle.

While these beginner bundles are incredibly convenient, they often don’t feature guitars of this quality. The Martin LX1E with Fishman Sonitone Pickup does come with a high quality, padded gig bag.

Martin’s padded gig bag and the compact body of the LX1E make it incredibly easy to pick up and play around the house or to take it on the road.

LX1E Features & Specs

Martin’s LX1E acoustic-electric guitar packs plenty of quality features into its small package. The body boasts Mahogany high-pressure laminate on the back and sides with a solid Sitka Spruce top.

The Spruce top features a classic natural Satin finish that has adorned many of the classic Martin guitars we all know and love. A Fishman Sonitone acoustic-electric pickup powers the plug-and-play readiness of the LX1E.

This pickup can be controlled by two dials within the body of the acoustic, a popular feature of all Fishman Sonitone-equipped products.

The LX1E also boasts a compact 23” scale length and can be purchased in both righty and lefty configurations.

  • Acoustic-electric thanks to Sonitone Pickup
  • High quality acoustic sounds
  • Solid Sitka Spruce top
  • Includes padded gig bag

Playing the Martin LX1E

The Martin LX1E is a pretty straightforward instrument. With only two knobs, for volume and tone, the electronics couldn’t be simpler.

Just plug in and play right after you tune up your new LX1E. The included gig bag also lets you take your guitar on the go right after you get it.

Want to take it to a gig? Play it on the beach? Wherever you want to take it, the LX1E will go. Check out this helpful demo of the Martin LX1E and its electric-acoustic applications!

Martin LX1E Review: Key Points

The Good Stuff

  • Compact size is easy on the player
  • Fishman Sonitone pickup makes it gig ready
  • Classic acoustic looks
  • Comes with padded gig bag

The Not So Good Stuff

  • Lower quality tone woods
  • Smaller body means lower acoustic volume compared to full-size

Alternative Instruments

Taylor GS Mini-e

Note: This model is discontinued but you can still find it aftermarket

Looking for another electric-acoustic from a legendary guitar company? The Taylor GS Mini-e is a similarly priced model from Martin’s main competitor for the title of most iconic acoustic guitar maker.

The Taylor GS Mini-e packs the same convenience of a small sized acoustic into the electro-acoustic format.

Taylor’s own ES2 acoustic guitar pickup powers this classic looking model, with external controls on the top side of the body.

It’s a bit more expensive, but it’s a worthwhile offering from a legendary guitar maker.

Martin LXK2

Looking for the same Martin greatness in a different aesthetic? Check out the Little Martin LXK2 , a Koa topped acoustic guitar that is similarly comfortable.

Providing a darker wood look, and Martin’s classic headstock, the LXK2 provides much of the same as the LX1E.

Furthermore, it comes with another sturdy, padded gig bag. Rich acoustic tones, a 23” scale length, and high user ratings wrap up the features on this lovely acoustic!

For more info on this model, read our full review here .

Final Thoughts On The Martin LX1E

Acoustic-electric guitars are sometimes hard to judge, as some see them as less necessary unless you’re a very specific type of player.

That may be true, but the Martin LX1E should be seen as a really versatile model. It can be taken around to wherever you want to strum a few acoustic chords while being plugged into an amp or PA system later that night at a gig.

From coffee houses to picnic blankets, the Martin LX1E with Fishman Sonitone pickup is an affordable and trustworthy option for musicians of all levels.

If you’ve always dreamed of owning a Martin acoustic, this may be your best bet at getting a useable, reliable, and sweet sounding instrument!

Martin LX1E Review

March 30, 2023

While most guitarists like to have at least one full-size acoustic guitar, many turn to smaller, more portable acoustic guitars for travel or practice. The Martin LX1E Little Martin from Martin Guitars is the smallest guitar that the company offers, but it has surprisingly good tone given both its small size and its affordable price point. In our Martin LX1E review, we'll take you through the specifications of this remarkable little guitar.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Smaller Guitar

A smaller guitar can be a great investment, but as with buying any guitar, it's wise to consider your choice carefully. here are a few things to consider before making a purchase.

  • Is this going to be your main guitar? Most players choose a full-size guitar as their main instrument. However, some artists (including Ed Sheeran, who performs with a Little Martin) do use smaller instruments as their main guitar for practice and performance.
  • Do you need electronics? If you want to perform with your smaller guitar, you may prefer finding one with electronics
  • Do you have a tonewood preference? As you likely know, having a solid soundboard is one of the most important things to have in a guitar. Some players might prefer an all-solid guitar, but one with laminated back and sides can still have a respectable sound

Our Picks for Review

Martin lx1e guitar - little martin, pro's & con's of martin lx1e.

Before we dive into our review, let's look at some of the pros and cons of the LX1E Little Martin:

lx1e little martin travel guitar

  • Solid Sitka spruce top creates big sound
  • Included Fishman Sonitone electronics make it a great guitar to play live
  • High-pressure laminate back and sides are durable and resist climate changes
  • This guitar is surprisingly affordable given its build quality
  • Laminated back and sides don't offer the same sound as a guitar made with solid wood
  • Fishman Sonitone isn't a particularly high-end system, and gigging guitarists might prefer a better system

Features and Benefits

Tonewood selection.

If you've been playing guitar for a significant period of time, you likely have your preferences when it comes to the type of wood used to make the guitars you play. This one has a solid Sitka spruce top, which is one of the most common woods used to make the soundboards of Martin instruments. It's a light yet stiff wood that produces a rich tone that leans toward the bright side.

The back and sides, like those of many more affordable Martin guitars, are made of high-pressure laminate, or HPL. This dense material does have some advantages--it keeps the guitar lightweight, and unlike wood, it doesn't change with humidity fluctuations.

However, guitars made with laminate often don't have the same full tone as those made with solid wood. HPL is often more difficult to repair, although it can be done--the video below offers an example. HPL can be patterned to look like woodgrain, and the Martin LX1E is patterned to look like mahogany.

The neck is made of laminated birch, and the fretboard is made of Richlite, a composite that is sometimes used as an ebony substitute. Most guitarists prefer natural wood over laminate when it comes to sound, but these features help keep costs down.

While the neck may not be made of an ideal material, its highly comfortable modified low oval profile with Performing Artist taper makes it comfortable and easy to play, even for children or adults with smaller hands.

Bracing and Sound Quality

This guitar is a scaled-down dreadnought , so unsurprisingly, its bracing is similar to the bracing used in full-size dreadnought guitars. The Martin LX1E has non-scalloped X-bracing, which places less emphasis on highs and lows and produces a rich, even sound. This video explains the different bracing styles Martin uses, as well as the sonic differences between them.

Sonically, this little guitar is impressive. Due to its smaller size, it doesn't have quite the bass of a larger instrument, but it's remarkably close. If you're familiar with Fishman's line of acoustic guitar pickups, you may know that the Fishman Sonitone is a system designed for budget-priced instruments. That said, the Martin LX1E sounds great when plugged in. This video demo lets you check it out for yourself.

Other Appointments and Finish

If you've ever purchased an affordable guitar (especially one from a larger manufacturer), you may know that some of these guitars come with poor-quality tuners and cheap plastic nuts and saddles. Thankfully, this little instrument comes with high-end tuners that let it reliably hold tune, even with aggressive playing.

As for the nut and saddle, Martin has chosen a white Corian nut and a Tusq saddle. Both are great materials when it comes to both tuning stability and sound. Corian is a composite that's now used by Gibson even on its top-priced instruments, and Tusq is a self-lubricating material that sounds similar to ivory and stops strings from becoming "stuck" on the saddle.

If you're interested in hearing the difference between bone and synthetic nuts and saddles, this video offers an interesting comparison.

In terms of finish, this is a very nice-looking guitar, especially given its affordable price point. Martin's signature hand-rubbed finish means that you won't see any runs in the gloss, and it also helps show off the natural grain of the spruce top (as well as the remarkably realistic mahogany pattern on the HPL).

Social Proof of the Guitar

If you're unable to try out a guitar in person before making a purchase, reading online reviews may be able to help you make your decision. If you've been looking at the Martin LX1E (or its non-electric counterpart, the Martin LX1), these reviews may help you find out whether this little guitar is right for you.

Martin LX1E Review 01

This Martin LX1E review, like many others, praises this small guitar's surprisingly big sound. It's especially notable that this player found the plugged-in sound to be impressive, as Fishman Sonitone isn't one of Fishman's higher-end electronics systems.

Martin LX1E Review 02

This review points out that the smaller size of this guitar may be good for those with hand injuries or otherwise weak hands. Plus, like many others who have played this guitar, this reviewer likes the sound.

Martin LX1E Review 03

This Martin LX1E review also points out that the sound of this Little Martin rivals the sound of many larger guitars. This is a sentiment that has been echoed in almost every review we could find.

Alternatives to Martin LX1E

When shopping for a guitar, it's always a good idea to compare the ones you're considering to a few alternatives. We've found a few that you may want to compare alongside the LX1E.

Taylor GS Mini Mahogany

How it compares to martin lx1e.

lx1e little martin travel guitar

  • This one has a small grand auditorium body (as opposed to the scaled-down dreadnought body of the LX1E)
  • Unlike the LX1E, this one does not have electronics
  • It's about the same size as the LX1E
  • This one has an ebony fingerboard, which is generally considered to be a superior material to Richlite

You've likely heard of the Baby Taylor, but the GS Mini is another small guitar that some players might prefer. This one is a smaller version of Taylor's acclaimed grand auditorium body style, and it's a great choice for those who prefer the warmer sound of a mahogany-top guitar. This one has a top of solid mahogany, and the back and sides are layered sapele. A genuine African ebony fretboard keeps it highly playable and gives it a high-end look. If you want a warm-sounding little guitar with a different body shape, make sure you give this one a look!

Martin 30th Anniversary Navajoa 000RS25

lx1e little martin travel guitar

  • Because it's a limited-edition model, this one is significantly more expensive than the LX1E
  • Aside from the rosewood fretboard, the build is similar to the LX1E
  • Limited-edition art sets this guitar apart in any crowd
  • This one has the same electronics as the LX1E
  • Layered sapele back and sides may create more resonant tone than the HPL back and sides of the LX1E

If you like both little guitars and limited editions, this might be a guitar worth considering. This 000-size instrument has a slightly longer scale length than the LX1E, and it has a solid Sitka spruce top and layered Sapele back and sides. This guitar has a solid East Indian Rosewood fretboard, and the soundboard is decorated with unique eagle art. This one also comes equipped with Fishman Sonitone electronics. If you'd prefer a limited-edition Martin, make sure you check out this guitar!

Martin 000-Jr. 10-E

lx1e little martin travel guitar

  • Rounded body is essentially a smaller version of a grand auditorium guitar
  • Cutaway makes it easier to play frets further down the neck
  • Layered sapele back and sides may offer better sound than HPL
  • Solid soundboard provides rich and responsive tone
  • Small size makes it a great travel instrument
  • It also comes with Fishman Sonitone electronics

This is another smaller guitar that's perfect for those who like the Little Martin but prefer a body style that is essentially a scaled-down grand auditorium. The 000-Jr. 10-E has a Venetian cutaway for easy fret access, and like the LX1E, it also has a solid spruce top and layered sapele back and sides. This guitar also comes equipped with Fishman electronics, and it has a sustainable Richlite fingerboard. If you're looking for a non-dreadnought guitar similar to a Little Martin, make sure you give this guitar a look!

In Conclusion

If you're in the market for a smaller instrument that comes with a solid top and electronics, the Martin LX1E is a great guitar to consider. With a solid top, respectable electronics, and great playability, it's a great option for impromptu gigs or playing at home. Plus, it's a very affordable instrument. Click here to check it out!

What we say:

At a glance:.

The LX1E Little Martin delivers a guitar that's small in size but not small in tone. Acclaimed guitar makers Martin haven't compromised on quality construction and materials, resulting in a robust yet high quality instrument that's ideal for a range of situations; whether taking it out on the road, sitting round the house or campfire, or even for the studying musician who needs something a little smaller to get their hands around.

Features We Love:

Travel size.

With its smaller-than-average body and short 23" scale length, the LX1E takes up less real estate in the car, tour bus or bedroom, and allows for a more comfortable experience for young musicians and new students alike.

The LX1E sports High Pressure Laminate Back & Sides, providing a reliable and robust construction that stands up to the rigors of the road, paired with a solid Spruce Top to deliver great tone and superb projection for a guitar this size.

Electronics

More than just a kids guitar or a campfire guitar, the LX1E features the Fishman Sonitone acoustic pickup, letting you amp up for bigger live situations and making it a great choice for the recording musician too.

Highlights:

  • Small body size is great for travelling
  • Short scale is extremely comfortable for smaller and younger musicians
  • No-compromises construction delivers reliability without sacrificing quality and tone
  • Comes complete with padded gig bag for portability and protection

6-string Acoustic-electric Guitar with Spruce Top, Mahogany HPL Back and Sides, Birch Laminate Neck, and Richlite Fingerboard – Natural

Little Size, Big Martin Sound

If you travel often and want to bring a 6-string companion along, few instruments fit the bill better than Little Martin series guitars! The LX1E’s modified O-style body is about as comfortable as acoustic guitars get, sporting a solid spruce top and mahogany-pattern HPL back and sides to deliver luscious Martin tone in a luggage-bin sized package. FSC Certified Richlite is used for both the fingerboard and bridge — this composite material is all but impervious to changes in temperature and humidity, while still offering a sleek, smooth playing surface. Finally, a Fishman Sonitone pickup faithfully replicates your unplugged tone, making the Little Martin LX1E a workhorse that’s equally at home on the stage, in the studio, or on the couch!

Sustainable building materials

One of the most appealing features of the Little Martin LX1E is how Martin designed it with materials that are simultaneously environmentally sustainable, durable, and more than capable of delivering traditional Martin acoustic tone! The bridge and fingerboard are made with FSC Richlite, a long-lasting composite material that offers old-school Martin tone but with space-age reliability. Richlite is totally unaffected by temperature and humidity changes, making it a perfect choice for musicians who travel often or live in challenging climates. In addition, the Mahogany HPL back and sides deliver a warm sound, and they’re far less likely to dry out and crack compared to solid wood designs.

Onboard Fishman electronics

The LX1E acoustic-electric guitar has onboard Fishman Sonitone electronics that faithfully reproduce the warm and mellow tones of your guitar. Since the electronics are mounted in the guitar’s soundhole, your volume and tone knobs are within easy reach and are very inconspicuous. With onboard electronics this good, you’ll feel confident hitting the stage or the studio!

Martin LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-electric Guitar Features:

  • Modified O-style body is ideal for travel, couching playing, and musicians of a smaller stature
  • Solid spruce top offers a lively and resonant response
  • Mahogany pattern HPL back and sides are incredibly sturdy and produce a full and clear midrange-biased tone
  • 23-inch scale length offers a loose, comfortable playing feel that’s great for players of all sizes
  • Highly durable rust birch laminate neck with a Modified Low Oval neck shape with taper for high playing performance
  • Fishman Sonitone pickup faithfully replicates your tone when plugging in
  • Smooth and low-maintenence hand-rubbed satin finish

Great with a little work

This is a fantastic small bodies guitar from one of the kings of acoustic makers. Ideal as a smaller bodied instrument, for travel, the living room, or just for players of a smaller stature, it has great resonance and is surprisingly loud and touch sensative. Dynamic playing is rewarding and the string spacing should suit most players.

However, the setup from he factory was lacking. The action was very high, making for poor intonation. I'm hoping this slipped through the QC net but shouldn't happen on any guitar let alone a Martin.

It only took a little work to get it playing perfectly but it shouldn't have need needed in the first place.

I love the multi-laminate neck, which has been stable through many travels and climate changes, a true testemant to good design.

hey bro I have an ed sheeran divide and the sound is crap, could be the strings, and the pick up picks up no body percusssion but how do i adjust the neck truss to make it sound alright?

sanjeeanand

Perfect for everywhere, anywhere!

Feels really good and sounds bright. This guitar can take a beating. I lowered the action when I first got this guitar and noticed that alot of the weight is on the neck of the guitar. Through wear and tear you'll find the guitars top is very prone to getting scratched up over time from your picks due to its natural finish. Great sound from the Fishman Isys T pickups system but its built in tuner is crap. Would be better if they resorted to a sound-hole pickup such as the Fishman Sonitone so that there is no hole to accommodate the side mounted preamp thus affecting the guitar sound.

These days I use this guitar as my backup. I bring it with my main guitar for the bigger gigs as a backup incase I break a string, for songs that have alternative tunings or for certain songs that I feel deserves the sound from this guitar but in general, its my backup.

Good Guitar

I've Had Mine Since November And I Love It Recommend Buying One If Your A Guitarist

matburn

Great guitar for the price and size

The guitar has considerable sound for the miniature body. Although if you're performing in front of any audience get yourself a good amp of plug into P.A. The fishman on it is a great preamp and the guitar is really though. (I dropped mine more than once and so far only couple visible scratches). Definately recommend for travelling and beginner guitarists as well as practice instriments!

tjepson

Great travel guitar when plugged into amp

The guitar has a very small body, but you can actually get some solid sounds of out it. Can be quiet when playing in a band or with other instruments

Easy and fun

First time I picked up this guitar I fell in love with it. So easy to play and has such a full sound. A ton of fun and would recommend it to anyone looking for a cool guitar to play around the house or campfire.

This study illustrates the spatio-temporal dynamics of urban growth and land use changes in Samara city, Russia from 1975 to 2015. Landsat satellite imageries of five different time periods from 1975 to 2015 were acquired and quantify the changes with the help of ArcGIS 10.1 Software. By applying classification methods to the satellite images four main types of land use were extracted: water, built-up, forest and grassland. Then, the area coverage for all the land use types at different points in time were measured and coupled with population data. The results demonstrate that, over the entire study period, population was increased from 1146 thousand people to 1244 thousand from 1975 to 1990 but later on first reduce and then increase again, now 1173 thousand population. Builtup area is also change according to population. The present study revealed an increase in built-up by 37.01% from 1975 to 1995, than reduce -88.83% till 2005 and an increase by 39.16% from 2005 to 2015, along w...

Land use/Cover Change in Russia within the context of global challenges. The paper presents the results of a research project on Land Use/Cover Change (LUCC) in Russia in relations with global problems (climate change, environment and biodiversity degradation). The research was carried out at the Faculty of Geography, Moscow State University on the basis of the combination of remote sensing and in-field data of different spatial and temporal resolution. The original methodology of present-day landscape interpretation for land cover change study has been used. In Russia the major driver of land use/land cover change is agriculture. About twenty years ago the reforms of Russian agriculture were started. Agricultural lands in many regions were dramatically impacted by changed management practices, resulted in accelerated erosion and reduced biodiversity. Between the natural factors that shape agriculture in Russia, climate is the most important one. The study of long-term and short-ter...

Annals of The Association of American Geographers

Land use and land cover change is a complex process, driven by both natural and anthropogenic transformations (Fig. 1). In Russia, the major driver of land use / land cover change is agriculture. It has taken centuries of farming to create the existing spatial distribution of agricultural lands. Modernization of Russian agriculture started fifteen years ago. It has brought little change in land cover, except in the regions with marginal agriculture, where many fields were abandoned. However, in some regions, agricultural lands were dramatically impacted by changed management practices, resulting in accelerating erosion and reduced biodiversity. In other regions, federal support and private investments in the agricultural sector, especially those made by major oil and financial companies, has resulted in a certain land recovery. Between the natural factors that shape the agriculture in Russia, climate is the most important one. In the North European and most of the Asian part of the ...

In recent decades, Russia has experienced substantial transformations in agricultural land tenure. Post-Soviet reforms have shaped land distribution patterns but the impacts of these on agricultural use of land remain under-investigated. On a regional scale, there is still a knowledge gap in terms of knowing to what extent the variations in the compositions of agricultural land funds may be explained by changes in the acreage of other land categories. Using a case analysis of 82 of Russia’s territories from 2010 to 2018, the authors attempted to study the structural variations by picturing the compositions of regional land funds and mapping agricultural land distributions based on ranking “land activity”. Correlation analysis of centered log-ratio transformed compositional data revealed that in agriculture-oriented regions, the proportion of cropland was depressed by agriculture-to-urban and agriculture-to-industry land loss. In urbanized territories, the compositions of agricultura...

Despite harsh climate, agriculture on the northern margins of Russia still remains the backbone of food security. Historically, in both regions studied in this article – the Republic of Karelia and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) – agricultural activities as dairy farming and even cropping were well adapted to local conditions including traditional activities such as horse breeding typical for Yakutia. Using three different sources of information – official statistics, expert interviews, and field observations – allowed us to draw a conclusion that there are both similarities and differences in agricultural development and land use of these two studied regions. The differences arise from agro-climate conditions, settlement history, specialization, and spatial pattern of economy. In both regions, farming is concentrated within the areas with most suitable natural conditions. Yet, even there, agricultural land use is shrinking, especially in Karelia. Both regions are prone to being af...
