This is the third largest city in Vietnam and offers visitors who make the trip here the perfect mix of modern and traditional touches. 1. Visit the Ba Na Hills

5. Watch the show at Dragon Bridge

The main attraction in the center of Da Nang is undoubtedly the large Dragon Bridge which stretches over an ominous 666 meters and has the claim to fame of being the longest bridge of its kind in the country.

As the name suggests, the bridge was built in the shape of a dragon which is meant to represent good luck in Vietnam.

Every Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm you can walk down to the waterfront and watch a show which lights up the bridge and the dragon even spits out fire and water from its mouth.

6. Visit the Cham Museum

Many visitors don’t realize that Da Nang has a huge number of interesting museums and the Cham Museum will tell you everything that you want to know about the Cham people in Vietnam.

This museum also has the claim to fame of being the only Cham museum in the world and it first opened its doors in 1915 at the time of the French colonial period.

7. Enjoy the views at the Hai Van Pass

The Hai Van Pass is one of the top attractions in this part of Vietnam and rests at around 500 meters above sea level.

There are a number of historical markers along the way as you navigate the pass including a fort that would have been built during the French colonial period which was also used as a bunker during the Vietnam War by American and South Vietnamese troops.

8. Travel to Son Tra Mountain

Son Tra Mountain translates as Monkey Mountain in English and this is part of a spectacular national park in Da Nang that is located at around 700 meters above sea level.

11. Relax at Non Nuoc Beach

If you want to get outside the city then head to Non Nuoc Beach which is around a 20 minute drive away from the center of Da Nang.

The beach is regularly voted one of the most beautiful in the world and you will find white powdery sand here that backs on to azure waters.

The beach sprawls for 5 kilometers along the coast and leads you all the way to the base of the Marble Mountains.

The Phap Lam Pagoda is located inside a building that unfolds over two floors and is set amidst lush gardens that are dotted with sculptures of the Buddha.

The pagoda is known for its relaxing and serene setting and you will find a central courtyard with a statue of the Buddha that is 1.1 meters high.

Here are also additional statues of the Goddess of Mercury as well as Dai The Chi Bodhisattva.

13. Visit the Da Nang Cathedral

The Da Nang Cathedral is one of the most famous catholic churches in Vietnam thanks to its amazing design features.

The cathedral dates from 1923 and it also goes by its local nickname which is Con Ga or Rooster Church.

Con Market may not be a promising name for a shopping area but you will find some 2,000 shops here which sell everything you could ever need in Da Nang.

This shopping area has been here since the 1940s and it was renovated in 1984 to its present form.

19. Visit the Ho Chi Minh Museum

Some of the galleries are made up of collections of Soviet and Chinese weapons which will fill you in on some of the military history of Vietnam.

20. Check out the Han River Bridge

The Han River Bridge is one of four main bridges in Da Nang and is also a top attraction for visitors to the city.

This is a cable supported swing bridge and was the first of its kind in the region.

Visitors flock here at night as the bridge is fully illuminated by colorful changing lights and if you stop here around midnight you can watch an amazing spectacle as the bridge swings on its axis and open up to allow ships to pass by.

21. Visit Asia Park

If you fancy getting out of Da Nang then you can travel to Asia Park which is located on the coast and is a large amusement and cultural facility.

The park is made up of three zones including an Amusement Park, a Cultural Park and a Central Zone.

The first one is Banh Xeo Ba Duong. The restaurant serves customers with a platter of pancakes along with beef, beansprouts, pork, prawns or chicken. There is a bowl of soup made by fishing sauce, sugar, lemon, chili and garlic.

11. Visit Ba Na Hills

Ba Na Hills is a mountaintop resort complex that offers a wide range of great activities. For example, you can ride the cable cars, stroll the French Village, ride the Alpine Coaster and take the 4D Death Race experience. 

In order to get to Ba Na Hills, you can choose a taxi, motorbike or open bus. The best time to visit is from April to August. This is the peak season when there are thousands of travellers coming to enjoy the atmosphere of Ba Na Hills.

12. Shop at Han market

You’ll need at least three days in the city of Da Nang to explore all of the highlights, and even more to spend time relaxing at the beach or by your hotel pool.

Da Nang Travel Basics

Getting to da nang.

Da Nang is located in Central Vietnam and is home to the third busiest airport in Vietnam – Da Nang International Airport (DAD). The low-cost domestic airline, Vietjet, operates numerous flights into and out of the city each day.

Trains and buses are also available if you prefer to travel by land from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi but the distance is quite far. Tourist buses in Vietnam are generally “sleeper buses” that are double-decker and all of the seats are in a reclining position. If you are very tall or would rather not be forced to recline, confirm the bus type before you book your tickets or plan on taking the train.

We prefer Bookaway.com for booking buses and trains in Vietnam. It lets you see all of the routes and ticket prices in one place along with ratings and reviews from other travelers. Oddly enough, it’s actually cheaper to book train tickets on Bookaway than on the official Vietnam Railway website.

Best Time of Year to Visit Da Nang

You’ll find that Da Nang is the driest and has the most pleasant temperatures from February until April. The hot/dry season in central Vietnam lasts from April until October with high temperatures ranging from 95 – 104 °F. July is generally the hottest month of the year and during these summer months, the midday heat can be unbearable.

The winter months are cooler and you can expect some rainfall from September until January. There are generally typhoons during the month of November so it’s best not to plan your trip during that time frame.

Getting Around Da Nang

The best way to see all that the city of Da Nang has to offer is by motorbike. And because most of the area surrounding Da Nang is mountainous, you’ll find that a more powerful bike is better suited for this region of the country. We rented a Honda XR motorbike from Tigit Motorbikes and had no issues navigating the steep incline to get to the top of the Hai Van Pass .

Grab is also a convenient way to get around the city of Da Nang. It’s the Uber of Southeast Asia . Just download the app ( iPhone | Android ) on your phone and select your pick-up and drop-off points. Keep in mind it often takes longer than hailing a taxi, and the drivers occasionally cancel the ride, but it’s far easier than having to negotiate your taxi fare prior to departing. And it’s much cheaper!

You can load your credit card info or opt to pay cash for each ride. You’ll rarely pay more than a few dollars to get around the city. Of course, you’ll need the internet to use Grab and we always recommend buying a Vietnamese SIM card as soon as you arrive in the country. There are several counters at the Da Nang airport where you can purchase one.

Currency in Vietnam

The currency of Vietnam is the Dong (VND) and at the time of writing, the exchange rate was approximately 23,226 VND to $1 USD. So if we say that something costs 50,000 VND, that’s just about $2. And don’t worry about bringing a lot of cash, there are plenty of ATMs around Da Nang.

Best Places to Eat in Da Nang

• Seafood is prevalent in Da Nang and the best place to get fresh, delicious seafood is La Plage . This beachfront restaurant inside the Sheraton Grand Danang Resort offers a casual atmosphere with gorgeous views of the sea. Their Signature Seafood Basket is not to be missed!
• Taco Ngon has a very modest menu – three meat choices and three topping choices. And all come in taco form. The concept is incredibly simple but the flavors are unlike any Mexican food you’ve ever tasted before (that’s because it’s not, the chef is actually Taiwanese). We tried them all and the pork with wasabi coleslaw was the shining star.
• We were excited to encounter another delicious Mexican restaurant in Da Nang –  Tacos Danang . While we love Vietnamese food, we often crave a little variety when traveling and we were happy to chow down on yummy nachos, quesadillas, and margaritas at this cute little restaurant.
• Happy Heart Cafe  is a darling spot to enjoy breakfast and a cup of coffee during your trip to Da Nang. Fresh salads, wraps, crepes, pizzas – no matter what you order, you can’t go wrong!
• Is it strange that in the three months I spent touring around Vietnam, my all-time favorite place to eat was a pizza restaurant? Yes, yes it is but seriously, Pizza 4P’s  is really that good. Their reasonably priced cheese platter is the perfect starter to one of their delicious wood-fired pizzas. The combinations are unique and oh so enticing – get the half and half option so you can sample more than just one!

The Best 14 Things to Do in Da Nang, Vietnam

1. stay at a swanky hotel on the beach.

The Sheraton Grand Danang Resort is a stunningly beautiful 5-star property located right on the Non Nuoc Beach. The resort features 258 spacious and impeccably decorated rooms, a state-of-the-art fitness center and relaxing spa, six food and beverage venues, and a gorgeous outdoor pool. In fact, at 820 feet in length, their pool is the longest infinity pool in Vietnam!

The Sheraton opened its doors in January of 2018 so everything inside and out has gorgeous, modern decor that is sparkling new! You’ll find the staff to be incredibly kind, helpful, and courteous, and you’ll appreciate the small touches like a delicious welcome drink and a cold towel to freshen up.

The beds at the Sheraton are so plush and comfortable that you won’t even want to get out of bed in the morning! But you should, because the buffet breakfast spread is spectacular. You’ll find everything from Vietnamese specialties to sushi, dim sum, fresh cheeses, warm pastries, and everything in between. Good thing the resort also has a fitness facility because you’ll most certainly be going back for seconds and thirds.

After breakfast, you can spend the day relaxing at the infinity pool that overlooks the pristine Non Nuoc beach. And end your day by watching the amazing sunset while enjoying a beer at their beachfront restaurant. From 5 pm – 7 pm, they offer discounted “sundowner” drinks. You are guaranteed to have an amazing, luxurious, and relaxing stay at the Sheraton Grand Danang Resort !

2. Lounge on the Beach

One of the top things to do in Da Nang involves not doing anything at all! Just lounge on the beach, soaking up the sun and sipping on ice cold beers. There are a few beaches to choose from:

My Khe Beach is a gorgeous stretch of coastline that stretches from the base of the Son Tra Peninsula to the Marble Mountains and is just a short three miles from the city center of Da Nang. This white sandy beach has calm, clear water that is perfect for swimming. There are plenty of lounge chairs available for rent and you’ll love relaxing with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other.

Non Nuoc Beach is south of My Khe and is filled with cute beachfront restaurants, luxurious resorts, and two international golf courses. It’s a bit further from the center of the city but you probably won’t want to leave your lavish beach resort anyway. Non Nuoc is far less crowded than My Khe so your lounging experience will be far more peaceful.

3. Enjoy the Water Activities

There are several exhilarating water activities available for a charge at My Khe Beach in Da Nang. You can rent a jet ski or see the view of the coastline from above in a parasail. Adults and children alike will have plenty of fun water sports options to choose from.

And if you stay at the Sheraton Grand Resort Danang, they offer sailboat and winder surfing instructions for any experience level. Or you can simply rent a kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or surfboard and enjoy the ocean without an instructor.

4. See the Dragon Bridge Breathe Fire

There are several remarkable bridges that you should visit during a trip to Da Nang. But arguably the most impressive is the Rong Bridge which is 545 feet long, constructed of steel, and is in the shape of a massive fire-breathing dragon. And it actually does breathe fire – every  Saturday and Sunday evening at 9 pm sharp.

The waterfront area surrounding the head of the dragon starts to get crowded at around 8:30 pm, especially right on the bridge. So if you would like to have an unobstructed view, plan on arriving early to secure a spot. The dragon bridge breathes fire twice, each time separated by about two minutes. And then it breathes water twice, again separated by about two minutes. Depending on the wind direction, if you are standing on the bridge, prepare to get soaked.

The fire display is unique and one of the top things to do during your trip to Da Nang!

5. Hike Around the Marble Mountains

The Marble Mountains are located about 20 minutes south of Da Nang, towards Hoi An. This area is made up of five marble and limestone mountains, each named for an element. They are Thuy Son (water), Kim Son (metal), Moc Son (wood), Hoa Son (fire), and Tho Son (earth). All five of the mountains have interesting natural caves and tunnels to explore, as well as Buddhist temples built into them.

Thuy Son Mountain is the most popular and it’s a steep 150 steps to the top. If you’d rather not make the climb, there is also an elevator that you can take. Here you’ll find three caves and a secret “road to heaven” where you can hike through one of the caves to the peak where spectacular views await. There is a trail that leads down from the top if you’d rather not go back through the cave.

But be sure to arrive early to beat the heat and the crowds. The marble rock inside of the caves is quite slippery so shoes with traction are recommended.

6. Shop in the Da Nang Markets

Han Market  and  Con Market are both good options if you are looking for designer knock-offs or souvenirs to bring back home. Be prepared to negotiate prices. Common treasures to purchase from Vietnam include colorful lanterns that light up the town of Hoi An, lacquerware, straw purses, silk robes, and wood carvings.

If you are interested in purchasing a marble statue, there are plenty of shops around the entrance to Thuy Son Mountain selling impressive marble (and resin) statues of all shapes and sizes.

7. Spend a Day at Sun World Ba Na Hills

The Sun World Resort in the Ba Na Hills is home to the now-famous Golden Bridge. Construction was completed in 2018 and already visitors are flocking to photograph this bridge that appears to be held up by two massive, ancient hands. It has become one of the more popular sites to visit in Da Nang.

A cable car will take you up to the massive resort that sits in the hills, 4,800 feet above sea level. The Sun World complex includes not only the Golden Bridge but also a French village, a wine cellar, multiple impressive temples and pagodas, an alpine slide, a fantasy park, a funicular, and multiple restaurants serving up food from all over the world.

8. Motorbike Around the Son Tra Peninsula

The Son Tra Peninsula (aka Monkey Mountain) is located just outside of Da Nang’s city center. In fact, when you are lounging on My Khe Beach you can see the majestic Goddess of Mercy, an impressive 228 feet in height, from across the bay. This peninsula has a conservation order that has kept it from getting over-developed so you’ll get to enjoy its unspoiled natural beauty.

The total road trip is about 25 miles, about 10 of which crosses the Son Tra Mountains. As with the Hai Van Pass, you’ll also want a more powerful motorbike to make this journey, especially if you plan on riding double.

There are several religious monuments on the peninsula. Ling Ung Pagoda is a significant pilgrimage destination for Buddhists and the Goddess of Mercy statue to a symbol to protect the coastline from rough seas. The peninsula also has numerous beautiful and unspoiled beaches including Buddha Beach, Bai Rang Beach, Bai Nom Beach, and Bai Nam Beach.

If you stop at the religious monuments and take some time to relax on the beaches, this trip will take you most of the day.

9. Visit the Mỹ Sơn Ruins

The ancient Mỹ Sơn Ruins are just west of Hoi An and about an hour’s drive from Da Nang. It’s easy to take a day trip to My Son from either Hoi An or Da Nang. Mỹ Sơn was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom between the 4th and 13th centuries and its spiritual origins are in Indian Hinduism.

While not as impressive as Bagan in Myanmar or Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Mỹ Sơn has its own unique charm. The lush vegetation provides a vibrant backdrop for the ancient brick buildings.

The preserved archeological site is small but easy to walk around in a few hours. And the loop trail is fairly flat. But be sure you get to Mỹ Sơn early to avoid the crowds and the heat. Or bring an umbrella to shade you from the harsh midday sun.

10. Take a Day Trip to Hoi An

The darling town of Hoi An is just a short 45-minute drive south of Da Nang. If you’re short on time, you can just go for the day but we would absolutely recommend spending a few days in this quaint town. The pedestrian-friendly downtown area is filled with historical buildings painted a vibrant yellow and colorful lanterns hung from every tree.

You can get a tour of the old town on a cyclo and then once the sun starts to set, you’ll love taking a short boat ride on the river. The old city really comes alive in the evenings with people filling the street and colorful lanterns lighting up the entire area. It’s very crowded, especially on the Cau An Hoi bridge and throughout the night market.

11. Go for a Ride at Asia Park

Asia Park is owned by the same company that operates Sun World so you can expect a similar amount of fun for the whole family. There is an amusement park full of rides and attractions that kids of all ages will love, beautiful gardens, interesting architecture, and plenty of dining options.

You can spot the giant Ferris wheel from pretty much anywhere along the riverfront. It’s a highlight of the park and definitely worth checking out for the views from the top!

12. Drive over the Hai Van Pass

The Hai Van Pass is famous for many reasons – cultural, historical, and geographical. Plus, it’s arguably one of the most beautiful coastal routes in all of Vietnam. The most popular way to see visit the mountain pass is to rent a motorbike and cruise up the winding road on your own.

Da Nang weather

Positioned in the central part of the country, Da Nang experiences a tropical monsoon climate that has two distinct seasons: a rainy season (from August to December) and a dry season (from January to July). Particularly, the rainy season in Da Nang is synonymous with days of uninterrupted rain. October is the wettest month of the year with high precipitation. So, traveling in Da Nang in the rainy season may limit the range of outdoor activities. The dry season, in contrast, is often humidly hot and cloudy. The hottest month is reported in June with the temperature reaching 34 °C on average.

According to the types of activities, we suggest two ideal time frames to visit this phenomenal beach city.  Late December to late March  is perfect for sightseeing and exploring activities because the weather is super advantageous with a transparent blue sky, the absence of lasting rains, and the average temperature fluctuating between 18 °C to 27 °C.

February is the most recommended month with very pleasant weather, the least rainy month, and the celebration of many local festivals. For by-water and beach activities,  late February to late April  is the best time. This is when the temperature rises to around 32 °C, just hot enough for diving in the cool and clear water in Da Nang. Also, you get enough waves and wind for water sports such as surfing and kitesurfing.

Travel to Da Nang

Da Nang is one of the most developed cities in Vietnam, which means a modern transport system. One of the highlights of Da Nang transportation, making it extremely accessible, is that its airport, train station, and central bus stations are located a short distance from the city center.

Da Nang international airport is only 3 km away from the city center and is operated by many local and international airlines, making it the most preferable way to approach Da Nang from overseas. As soon as arriving at the airport, it is (again) super easy to travel to town due to its convenient location.

The national North-South Railway contributes 30 km of its train line crossing Da Nang city, and all the train routes stop in for dropping off and picking up passengers at this station. You can travel to Da Nang by train from over 35 provinces and cities and can travel almost anywhere across the country from here.

From  Hanoi  and  Ho Chi Minh City , it often takes from 16 to 19 hours to reach Da Nang. To make the long trip more comfortable, there are many seat options it has to offer, ranging from 370,000 VND ($19) to 1,100,000 VND ($47).

This means of transportation is more environmentally friendly compared to taking airplanes and also more economical; more importantly, you can view the landscapes changing through the windows, which we believe is a very worthy experience.

From neighboring cities such as  Hoi An  and  Hue , there are public buses from and to Da Nang Central bus station .  In addition, private bus companies (The Sinh Tourist and  Phuong Trang ) and many local coach services operate trips to Da Nang. The long traveling time is compensated by a very affordable price.

Travel in Da Nang

To sightsee and explore Da Nang, we suggest the following means of transport.

We prioritize public transport not only for your easy access but also for the sake of our environment. Officially, Da Nang provides 14 bus routes in town. You can check for specific trips and fares on  danangbus.vn .

Safe, reliable, and more proactive is taking a taxi to see around Da Nang. With the key attractions not too stretched out, it is quite reasonable to go from place to place by taxi. When you get in touch with a driver, it is possible to ask them for a quick tour around the city (normally lasting for around 4 hours) at a cost of 650,000 VND ($28). It is also possible to suggest that they be your private driver, which means he will follow your schedule and accompany you to wherever in the city (standardly from 9 AM – 5 PM) at a price of around 1,800,000 VND ($77).

Festivals in Da Nang

Festival of avalokiteshvara.

Avalokitesvara Festival is a spiritual celebration wishing for harmonic weather and sending prayers for health, peace, and harmony. It is held in 3 days, including two parts: ceremony and festival. The ceremony emphasized sacred Buddhist rituals with many religious activities such as welcoming the light, preaching the teachings of Lady Buddha, and so on. The festival takes place vibrantly with various traditional and modern performances: singing folk songs, cosplaying, dancing, and calligraphy exhibition activities.

This festival takes place on February 19 of the lunar calendar every year. The location of the festival is the Marble Mountains tourist site. The festival attracts numerous tourists as well as Buddhist pilgrims coming to Da Nang.

Fireworks Festival

The Fireworks Festival is an international-scale cultural and tourist event that has been taking place annually since 2008. The festival lasts for two days in a row commemorating the liberation of Vietnam on April 30 and International Workers’ Day on May 1. Every year, the fireworks competition features a different theme. This festival attracts many developed fireworks industries, such as Japan, the United States, Italy, Russia, and so on, creating spectacular and artistic fireworks performances along the Han River. Cau Ngu Festival

This is a long-established traditional festival of the coastal villages to show gratitude and respect towards whales. According to folk beliefs, whales are regarded as the guardians of the sea. Many times, it is said that it was the whales that saved fishermen and their boats when they were out at sea and facing extreme storms and waves.

The festival takes place after the Lunar New Year festival from 14 to 16 January (lunar calendar). It is a tradition that in the 2-3 day festival, people will not cook at home but will cook and eat together. From the 16th century, Da Nang has steadily grown in size and importance from being a small trading port to becoming a large shipbuilding site in the 19th century.

Eventually, Da Nang became the largest commercial port in the region. It was in Da Nang that the French first landed to conquer the country.

It was also the first place that Europeans arrived in Vietnam when the Portuguese explorer António de Faria anchored off the coast in 1535.

In 1965 the US military arrived and began building air and army bases around the area. The vicinity around Da Nang was heavily affected by the chemical Agent Orange.

The harsh chemical was primarily stored at the international airport in town by the United States, eventually seeping into the soil and water supply.

The Americans used Da Nang, and its gorgeous My Khe Beach (which they called “China Beach”), as a place for rest and recuperation for soldiers fighting elsewhere in the country.

These days its history is all but a distant memory for the youth and travellers who grow up and visit the city.

There is a booming restaurant and food scene developing and its proximity to natural attractions like the Hai Van Pass and the Marble Mountains make it a great place to get out and explore the outdoors.

Ancient folklore says that a dragon emerged from the sea and laid an egg on the beach. 1000 days and nights passed and eventually, an exquisite lady was born.

The remains of the eggshells grew into the Marble Mountains that you can see today.

Over the centuries the Marble Mountains were used as a safe haven for soldiers and a place of worship for Buddhists. Today it is one of the most popular attractions in the city!

For years the hills were mined for their valuable stone, although that has been recently banned. You can see examples of intricate stonework in the roadside workshops surrounding the Marble Mountains.

If you are feeling energetic you can climb to the summit of one of the mountains, offering absolutely spectacular views over the entire area.

Dragon Bridge is 666m in length and is the longest bridge of its kind in all of Vietnam.

Make sure you time your visit to Dragon Bridge to be a weekend because at 9 pm every Saturday and Sunday they turn the lights on and the dragon breathes actual fire!

The beautiful rainforest that juts out into the sea from the city of Da Nang is called the Son Tra Peninsula. At a size of over 4000 hectares, this place is massive!

Rent a scooter or motorcycle to ride along the newly-built road to the end and check out the nature reserve, and stop off to visit one of the most important religious sights in the area, Quan Am.

Keep an eye out for the red shanked duoc langars that live on the Son Tra Peninsula. They are quite beautiful if you catch a glimpse of one!

Son Tra is a perfect getaway from the city and perfect for those wondering what to do in Da Nang.

There are plenty of untouched beaches along the peninsula and some excellent viewpoints, making this one of the most pristine beautiful places to visit in Da Nang.

The beaches here are truly lovely and a real solid reason to visit Da Nang.

The long stretches of white sand are a perfect place to chill out on a hot afternoon, and with so much space it’s easy to find a spot all to yourself.

My Khe is the longest beach in Da Nang, and arguably one of the top ones in the entire country.

Head down to My Khe Beach for sunrise to see locals making the most of the start of the day, or come back in the afternoon for some delicious seafood served up in the restaurants.

If you’re a surfer, this is a perfect spot to come down to catch some small swell.

Vietnam has a fascinating indigenous history, and one of the best places to experience this is the area around Hoi An and Da Nang.

The Cham people lived in this region nearly 1000 years ago, and built some of the most iconic structures in all of Vietnam, such as the UNESCO World Heriage Site: My Son ruins .

Made famous in an episode of the TV show, Top Gear, the Hai Van Pass has now become a bucket list item for thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts (and amateurs) and adventurers looking for alternative things to do in Da Nang.

This 21km mountain pass between Da Nang and Hue offers some of the most incredible ocean views in all of Vietnam.

A new highway tunnel that has been built to bypass the road ensures that traffic numbers now are low, although the ride can still be quite technical; especially if you are inexperienced or the weather turns bad.

Rent a scooter from town and leave early in the morning if you plan on being back in Da Nang the same day.

There are also a number of tour companies that can help you ride the Hai Van Pass if you aren’t a confident motorbike rider.

One of the best things to do when travelling around Vietnam is to explore the thousands of markets you can find in every town.

They are an assault on the senses, and it feels as though you can find just about anything you could ever need in them.

Fruits, meats and vegetables are common of course, but so are electrical equipment, housing supplies, health supplements and everything else under the sun.

In Da Nang the markets are truly amazing, but they can be overwhelming to wander through them if you’re not used to the hustle and bustle of Southeast Asian markets.

A great Da Nang activity is to join a cooking class that includes a visit to the markets.

On this tour you’ll be picked up from your accommodation and taken to the markets to pick up the ingredients you’ll need to make some delicious Vietnamese cuisine.

We didn’t know that Da Nang had such a happening food scene until we stayed at the amazing Funtastic Hostel, which is sadly now closed.

Owned by Summer from Danang Cuisine, one of the most famous food blogs in the country, she really opened our eyes to the culinary delights around the city.

Naturally, being so close to the ocean, fresh seafood is on many restaurants’ menus. There are plenty of awesome street food to try as well if you are on a budget. For our biggest and best recommendation go eat at Tam’s Pub And Surf Shop.

Make sure you have a few hours spare to listen to Tam’s fascinating stories of what life was like growing up during the war (and try her vegetarian burgers).

If you’re more of a street food type of person, then you’ll have no shortage of restaurants to eat at. Just cruise up and down the road and grab a chair at any of the busy spots!

You’ve probably seen a photo on Instagram of a long bridge high above a mountainous landscape, with huge concrete hands seemingly holding it up.

That spot is in the Ba Na Hills, and you can go visit it yourself!

Besides walking across the bridge and getting your Insta pics, a real highlight in Ba Na Hills is checking out the Linh Ung Pagoda and visiting a minority village.

How to Get to Da Nang

There are a whole bunch of different ways to get to Da Nang city. The easiest, and most efficient, is to fly in.

Da Nang city has an international airport that services a whole bunch of different countries, and has excellent connections with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

If you’re in Da nang, its a must to see the dragon bridge at night. The dragon is covered with beautiful and bright lights, looks aesthetically pleasing to the eye and it also blows water and fire at 9 pm.

Danang is probably the ‘most livable’ city for foreigners but still plagued by poor infrastructure, service, pollution, and industrial waste blatantly discharged into the seas/rivers.

The consequence of this are a myriad of food safety issues resulting in countless number of dead fish and other marine life washing up on beaches not long ago.

This combined with poor food safety standards and general lack of awareness/education on proper hygiene makes food consumption very those visiting.

Great blog. I will be in Da Nang for one day, arriving by cruise ship, Nov 3. What do you suggest we do? Is there a city tour company that might be independent of the ship? There will be 6 in our group. I would love to do a cooking class, but the guys won’t agree to that if they can’t also get their walking tour in.

Danang is a good place to travel, we have a lot of choice to go in Da Nang such as Bana Hills, Asian Park, Hai Van Pass, or go Hoi An – 35km far from Da Nang. I really love the seasides in Danang.

Just returned from 10-day trip to Vietnam, where we stayed the majority of days in Danang. Coolest side trip was definitely the Linh Ung Pagoda and the Son Tra Peninsula. We spent a night at the Pullman Beach Resort, which was an oasis of relaxation! Just loved the people, the vibe, the food and the whole essence of Danang!

Great Blog guys, What about a 7th being Ba Na Hills?i believe it has the longest cable car ride in the world! something like 5km, with glorious views and a theme park at the top along with cafes etc. The marble mountains was great too, seeing your photos makes me want to go back again..i remember driving a motorbike from the most northern end of China beach to Hoi An (about 30km) , and then stopping at Marble Mountains on the way home to the hotel, in about 38 deg heat, we were toasted by the end of the day,and then went for dinner at one of the seafood restaurants on China Beach with a few 333’s made it a perfect day

And with a good Hostel (Funtastic) and an owner who has real input to give, that can make it surely a really nice stay. China Beach looks perfect for a morning or late evening stroll, it’s so big that I like the idea of being able to find my own private area away from the crowds, as you said. One day we’ll make to Vietnam 🙂

China Beach really is perfect. Because Da Nang has so many high-end resorts as well, the council spends a good amount of money on rubbish collecting, so the beach is really clean.

Must-Visit Attractions in Danang, Vietnam

The Golden Bridge Hands

Vietnam’s newly debuted Golden Bridge is popping up on screens around the world. Two giant stone hands jut out of the mountainside appearing to cradle a delicate strand of gold that is now packed with eager camera-wielding tourists. The bridge offers breathtaking panoramic views of the valley below as well as the rolling Trường Sơn mountains. This architectural marvel is suspended nearly 4,600 feet above sea level and was built to entice more tourists into Danang’s Bà Nà Hills. Mission definitely accomplished.

This mountain at the north end of Danang’s My Khe beach is nicknamed Monkey Mountain for the rare species of monkey that dwells inside the dense forests. Sơn Trà Mountain was a former U.S. Army base for radar and communications, with some of the radar domes still visible today. Tourists usually rent a scooter or hire a local to drive the steep, winding road to the peak to see the sprawling city and coastline in all its glory. Several local tour companies organize hikes up and around the mountain, where lucky tourists might catch a glimpse of some playful monkeys.

Ba Na Hills SunWorld

This fairtytale-like hill station is modeled on an old European city complete with castles, cobblestone streets, and beautiful courtyards. The complex also features Buddhist statues and temples built for entertainment only, which makes for a quirky combination of old East and West. To get to the top, visitors must ride the world’s longest cable car lift which offers spectacular scenery of the valley below. Temperatures atop the mountain are refreshingly cool and there are endless photo opportunities at this unique complex. Tickets to Bà Nà hills don’t come cheap but they are well worth the stunning views and long list of facilities to keep the whole family entertained for the day.

The Marble Mountains

The Marble Mountains are a cluster of five mountains named after the earth’s elements: Kim (metal), Thuy (water), Moc (wood), Hoa (fire) and Tho (earth). The mountain accessible to tourists is Thuy, where a labyrinth of caves and passageways await exploration. There are several stunning pagodas and temples nestled in different areas of the mountain so it’s best to purchase a small map before embarking on the hike. The largest cave’s entrance is at the base of the mountain and is described as ‘hell’ by the locals; various creepy statues and engravings hidden inside this deep cave depict an afterlife of suffering and torture. Make sure to wear a pair of trainers with some grip – the marble steps are slippery and not suited for flip-flops.

Museum of Cham Sculpture

Danang’s Museum of Cham Sculpture houses the world’s most extensive collection of ancient Cham relics. Champa was an ancient kingdom that flourished in southern Vietnam beginning in the 4th century. The Mỹ Sơn ruins are the former worship grounds for the kingdom and is a famous tourist destination in the country. If you’re looking to continue your education about these ancient peoples, definitely pay this museum a visit and spend a day soaking up fascinating knowledge about this archaic culture.

My Khe Beach

The most popular beach in Danang is also one of the cleanest and most beautiful. Clear waters lap the shore of a white-sand beach that is framed by picturesque mountains and dotted with umbrellas and chairs. The beach is also surrounded by restaurants offering fresh seafood and cold beers. My Khe is the place to try some adventurous water sports such as parasailing and jet-skiing or simply snap some gorgeous shots of one of Vietnam’s most gorgeous beaches. It’s best to visit My Khe in the morning or early afternoon to beat the crowds that pour in around 4 p.m.

My Son Sanctuary

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Mỹ Sơn Holy Site hosts the abandoned ruins of Vietnam’s ancient Champa civilization that once occupied southern Vietnam. Mỹ Sơn depicts intricate carvings of various Hindu gods and makes an informative, fascinating day trip. A tour with a knowledgeable guide is highly recommended so you get the most from the area. Only a few buildings remain as the majority were destroyed in a carpet-bombing campaign by the Americans during the war; there are large bomb craters still visible around the site. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn about this ancient kingdom and explore the overgrown ruins surrounded by mountains.

Dragon Bridge

One of Danang’s most iconic symbols, this intricately designed bridge depicts a fire-breathing dragon heading toward the East Sea. It won a 2014 Diamond award for Engineering Excellence and weighs 8,164 tonnes and stretches an ominous 666 metres in length. The bridge is best seen during a walk alongside the river after the sun sets as the bridge gradually changes colour every few minutes. Not to mention it’s an excellent backdrop for a good Instagram pic.

Linh Ung Pagoda

While frolicking in the clear waters of My Khe beach, you might notice a gigantic white statue nestled in the mountain at the far end of the beach. It is the stunning 67-meter tall Lady Buddha majestically looking out over Da Nang Bay. Legend says the Lady Buddha provides protection to fishermen who venture out into rough seas and provides them safe passage. Aside from this gorgeous sculpture, the pagoda itself is one of the largest in the city, featuring a curved roof and pillars surrounded by dragon statues.

Art in Paradise

Art in Paradise is a fantastic 3D art museum perfect for anyone looking to escape the midday heat or taking refuge during a rainy day in Danang. The museum is separated into nine different zones distinguished by various themes, all created over a period of four months by 20 Korean artists. Their skill has resulted in some jaw-dropping works of intricate trick art that make for an entertaining afternoon for the whole family, not to mention some great pictures!

A nice drive to Son Tra (monkey) peninsular, this place is not too popular and it make you feel like undiscovered spot. The view itself is beautiful with one side is the rocks and jungle, the other side is ocean. You could stop and visit Linh Ung pagoda- a pagoda with a statue of female Buddha of 67metter high then continue to the top where there is a Ban Co peak ( Old man playing Chinese chess). You may take this trip in the morning for better view. As it is always hot and humid in Danang. Later in the afternoon the humidity makes the view but foggy. Some young travelers like to take motorbike to Son Tra. Make sure you fill full take of gas as there is no gas station up there.

Da Nang Cathedral was built in 1923 by French priest Louis Vallet, with a pink-painted edifice that earns its reputation as one of the most unique catholic churches in Vietnam. Standing at 70 metres high, it’s also known as Con Ga Church (Rooster Church) due to the imposing bell tower that’s topped with a rooster weathercock. It is not too popular and a short visit to this church would be nice and relaxing.

Between the 4th and 13th centuries a unique culture which owed its spiritual origins to Indian Hinduism developed on the coast of contemporary Viet Nam. This is graphically illustrated by the remains of a series of impressive tower-temples located in a dramatic site that was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom for most of its existence. Only 30km or half hour drive from Danang. If you stay in Danang City then you could visit Hoian in a half day or day trip. Hoian once known as Faifo, with more than 2,000 years history, was the principal port of the Cham Kingdom, which controlled the strategic spice trade with Indonesia from the 7th to the 10th century and was a major international port in the 16th and 17th centuries – and the foreign influences are discernible to this day. There is along time when country closed, Hoian was forgotten and people in Hoian got pretty tough life. Whatever you expect from Da Nang , you’re in for a surprise. Framed by mountains and embraced by the Han River and the East Sea, Da Nang is a rising star in the region. There’s a lot to take in.

The sandy sweep of my khe beach — lined with new hotels, seafood halls and fishing boats — leads the eye to where the statue of linh ung stands serenely overlooking the waves. the old city centre with its overflowing markets and hushed pagodas still functions, just a few streets away from hipster cafes and design boutiques. just when you think it’s all breathless forward motion, a moment of local life peels back the paint to reveal da nang’s easy, laidback culture. here’s how to nail your first visit. , hit the beach.

Start by getting some sand in your toes. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to join or observe crowds of cheerful Vietnamese exercising and swimming in the soft sunlight at My Khe beach. At any time of day, you can test your balance with surfing, SUP and other watersports, or simply grab a lounger spread out — it’s up to you.

Pay a visit to Marble Mountains

Just before 7am is the perfect time to make your way up the sheer steps at Marble Mountains . This compelling collection of pagodas set atop a marble will welcome throngs of visitors later in the day, but still feels fresh and sacred at sunrise. Wander around photogenic pagodas, feel cool currents of air in ancient caves, and climb to the lookouts for panoramic views. TIP: If you enjoy visiting pagodas, you may like to make the 15-minute drive out to Linh Ung Pagoda , an enormous complex with a towering statue of Lady Buddha which is said to protect Da Nang from storms and bad weather. For a unique local experience, search for Tuong Quang Pagoda in town.

Go cafe-hopping in town

Every Vietnamese city has its favourite cafes. Some are for long, long catch-ups over cups of drip-filter coffee  on the sidewalk, some are for long, long catch-ups over drip-filter coffee in a retro-chic setting, and some are for long, long catch-ups over artisanal coffee in cool industrial spaces. Soak up some culture at Cham Museum

Museum lovers, you’re in luck. The Cham Museum of Sculpture , one of the country’s top museums, claims a breezy spot along the western Han riverbank. You don’t have to be into archeology to appreciate the beauty of these stone pieces, sourced from former Champa sites in My Son, Tra Kieu, Dong Duong and Thap Mam. The original building, dating back to 1915 and expanded in the 1930s and 2002, is a work of art in itself.

We hope you come hungry (or ravenous) because Da Nang’s cuisine is a showcase of Central Vietnam’s top hits. Don’t miss a bowl of life-changing mì Quảng noodles in peanut and pork broth, savoury  Hue dumplings such as bánh bèo and bánh nậm , and aromatic fish paddies and slurp-worthy noodles in  bún chả cá.

TIP: Set in a beautiful green courtyard, Villa Ngon  serves an excellent, all-you-can-eat menu of delicate Vietnamese dishes for lunch and dinner. 

Take a stroll down Bach Dang St.

Here’s a mini walking tour you can do yourself. Start from the junction of Bach Dang and the Han River Bridge  just before sunset. Work your way along the water’s edge, passing some of the city’s most striking modern and colonial architecture, great souvenir shops, pavement cafes and marble sculptures on the way. After, treat yourself glass noodles with fresh crab for dinner at Madame Han .

Hoof it over Hai Van Pass

The name Hai Van translates into ‘ocean cloud’, so — surprise, surprise — you can expect a lot of ocean views and misty peaks on this 21km stretch of asphalt that climbs, twists and snakes its way over the mountains into Hue. At its highest point, Hai Van Pass reaches 496 metres above sea level.  Motorbike  is the ideal to take in the spectacular coastal scenery: jade seas, jungle-covered hills and rocky outcrops. Feeling adventurous? You can also cycle or ride the train. 

Try avocado ice-cream

Cho Bac My An is a small-ish market in Da Nang filled with tidy stalls piled high with fruits, vegetables, dry goods and more. Duck inside the market to locate one special avocado ice-cream (kem bơ) stall, loved by Da Nang’s youngsters for its creamy, cold coconut and avocado slush topped with jackfruit crisps. 

See the city's best bridges

Da Nang is sometimes called the ‘City of Bridges’, and its seven over-the-water structures are an iconic part of the city’s makeup. The striking yellow  Dragon Bridge is the best known, however selfie enthusiasts may also like to strike a post on the Love Bridge : a wooden pier weighed with countless padlocks of every colour. Of course, the much-photographed Golden Hands Bridge tops them all, with its breathtaking views of Ba Na Mountains.

Da Nang has no shortage of breathtaking bars and swimming pools perched high above the beach and city skyline. After full day of exploring, a refreshing dip and well-mixed cocktail are a welcome tonic. After dark, the party continues at Da Nang’s craft beer bars, rooftop clubs, and sidewalk bia hois. Inside Bill Gates’ sensational $ 30,000-a-night Vietnam getaway

 bill gates is the ninth richest man in the world.

When Bill Gates , one of the world's wealthiest and most influential figures, chooses a getaway destination, you can expect nothing less than extraordinary.

This time, his selection was the serene and luxurious InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, nestled in Vietnam's scenic Son Tra Nature Reserve. 

This exclusive retreat is where Bill and his girlfriend Paula Hurd indulged in a staggering $30,000 per night experience, demonstrating that his taste for the finer things in life certainly extends to his leisure activities.

The location.

Located about 30 minutes up a winding hill from the bustling streets of Da Nang, the InterContinental Danang is more than just a hotel; it's a veritable palace of modern luxury infused with traditional Vietnamese elements. 

Designed by the acclaimed American architect Bill Bensley, the resort is a masterpiece that blends seamlessly into the lush greenery of the surrounding tropical forest, descending gracefully to a secluded, palm-fringed golden beach. Unlike the more tourist-heavy Hoi An, its proximity ensures tranquility, with fewer visitors and an intimate connection with nature.

The exteriors

The resort’s design pays homage to the architectural grandeur of Vietnamese palaces and temples. Its monochromatic color scheme of whites, greys, and dark teak is accentuated by high vaulted ceilings and open spaces that invite natural beauty indoors.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by playful monkeys and a grand entrance that opens up to breathtaking views of the ocean, dotted with traditional Vietnamese fishing boats. Guests are transported through the vibrant, lush gardens by a funicular designed to resemble a traditional Vietnamese "junk" boat, enhancing the cultural experience. 

In the verdant trees, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the rare and endangered Red-shanked doucs that live on the resort. Their face features contrasting colors, with a white muzzle that frames dark, expressive eyes and long, white whiskers and beards that give it a wise appearance.

The resort boasts 189 exquisitely designed rooms and suites, each promising privacy and exclusivity. Bill Gates' choice of the top-tier accommodations included hiring three opulent three-bedroom villas, each at $10,000 a night located at the far end of the resort for added privacy. 

These villas are the epitome of luxury, featuring dark teak furnishings and sprawling balconies that offer panoramic views of the East Sea.  Each come with their own private infinity pool and a private butler to cater to every need. 

The bathrooms in each villa are a lavish affair with dark marble his-and-her sinks, vast mirrors, and a teak-drained rainfall shower. 

A huge stone bathtub, suitable for a relaxing swim, complements the luxurious setting. The choice of Acqua di Parma toiletries adds a sophisticated touch, bringing a sense of timeless elegance to the bathing experience.

Dining at the InterContinental Danang is an adventure in itself. The Citron restaurant offers an expansive buffet that showcases a fusion of Western, Eastern, and local Vietnamese flavors. Local dishes, such as the bánh cuốn, are particularly celebrated. 

These delicate sheets of fermented rice batter filled with minced pork and wood-ear mushrooms, served with a tangy dipping sauce, are a must-try. The restaurant’s outdoor tables, designed like inverted Vietnamese hats, offer stunning views and are a prime spot for enjoying the local cuisine.

The Barefoot restaurant close to the beach offers an incredibly luxurious menu like the Wagyu tenderloin, the biggest oysters you’ve ever seen, or the crazily opulent seafood platter. 

For those lucky enough to book a villa, they also have complimentary access to the Club InterContinental Lounge is an exclusive privilege reserved for guests staying in Club Rooms, Suites, Penthouses, and Villas. 

It provides a sanctuary where they can enjoy a host of bespoke amenities from early morning until late at night including incredible breakfasts serving up impressive meals like crab omelette or wagyu tartare, afternoon tea which includes treats like matcha scones served with mascarpone cream. From 5.30pm guests are treated to cocktails and free-flowing wine, plus exquisite canapes. 

The luxe amenities

For relaxation and entertainment, the resort is equipped with two swimming pools, a state-of-the-art gym, and a cinema. The Mi Sol Spa offers a tranquil escape with its cocoon-like treatment pods scattered around a peaceful lagoon. For those seeking a touch of celebrity glamour, the Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio by renowned nail technician Bastien Gonzalez is available, providing star-quality treatments.

The activities

The resort’s beach is perfect for sunbathing or engaging in water sports, and guests can explore the bay in traditional coracle basket boats. 

The beach is meticulously combed every hour to ensure the sand stays even and perfectly smooth. Guests are promptly treated to cool water and towels as soon as they rest on one of their luxe beach beds. 

There are also plenty of activities such as yoga, HIIT classes, shore fishing, paddle boarding or even kite sailing to keep the guests amused. 

The extensive kids’ club ensures that younger guests are entertained, making it a family-friendly destination as well.
