Black Star (formed in 1997) is the American hip hop duo of now-esteemed rappers Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Formed during the burgeoning underground rap scene in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, Black Star deliver a socially conscious, politically-influenced message at odds to the hip hop mainstream.
Aided by the independent record label Rawkus Records, Black Star, alongside Native Tongues Posse, moulded the underground rap scene into something more important than money. In the wake of the deaths of The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur, Black Star attempted to ameliorate tensions, reduce violence, and fill the void left by the passing of rap’s two figureheads. The duo’s debut single “Definition” was released in 1998, featuring a play on the Boogie Down Productions’ “Stop the Violence”.
Having initially intended to release solo albums during this time, due to the duo’s fruitful relationship, they continued working together and released their debut album “Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star” in August 1998. Extolled by critics and adored by fans, upon its release the record's image and sound was in stark contrast with the Puff Daddy produced hip-hop mainstream. The album instead choose to focus on the integrity, beauty, and illusions present in modern culture. Featuring fellow Native Tongue’s member Common on the album’s second single “Respiration”, the record charted at No. 53 on the Billboard 200 and No. 13 on the Top Hip-Hop Albums chart.
A year later in 1999, Black Star released the single “One For Love Pt. 1” featuring Kool G Rap, Pharoahe Monch, Posdnuos, Rah Digga, Shabaam, Sahdeeq, and Sporty Thievz. Charting at No. 4 on the U.S. Hip-Hop Chart, the single was taken from the EP “Hip Hop for Respect” in 1999. For the next few years Mos Def and Talib Kweli focused on their solo careers before returning in 2001 to record the song “Money Jungle” for the Red Hot Organisation’s “Red Hot + Indigo” Duke Ellington tribute compilation. Four years later the pair appeared in the film “Dave Chapelle’s Block Party” alongside a host of esteemed musicians including Erykah Badu, Common, Jill Scott, and The Fugees. Following another hiatus the duo returned to the studio in 2011 and released the single “Fix Up”on Stones Throw Records, proceeded by “You Already Knew” in November that year.
Live reviews
Mos Def - or Yasiin Bey, as he’s currently calling himself - is one of the great thinkers in modern hip hop; reflections on race and societal issues have long characterised his music, but’s fascinating to see him begin to address them so aggressively as his genre’s mainstream presence becomes more and more materialistic; he delivered a conscience-driven alternative to Jay Z and Kanye West’s ‘Niggas in Paris’ a couple years back, and was filmed being force-fed last year to raise awareness of conditions in Guantanamo Bay. Like I said, though, this is nothing new for Def, and his collaboration with the like-minded Talib Kweli, as Black Star, remains one of his career highlights. Their wonderfully philosophical record, dropped back in 1998, stands up remarkably well today; they’ve released nothing since, but made a series of well-received UK appearances in 2011, topping a bill that also included De La Soul and Rakim. Their live shows are modest affairs; the two of them on stage, a DJ dropping beats, and the crowd’s energy being the key components - but the vitality of their music has faded not one iota - frankly, hip hop is crying out for another record of that kind, as their recent live reunions have demonstrated.

Two of hip hops most acclaimed artists Yasiin Bey better known as Mos Def and Talib Kweli come together to record as the duo Black Star. A far more acknowledged name in the States, the group has gone on to perform internationally to an underground fanbase in countries including the UK, Canada and various venues across Europe.
It is an economic show if nothing else as you have the opportunity to see two fantastic performers for the price of one as they perform a selection of their collaborative work yet each rapper has time to showcase solo work too. The audience remains receptive throughout and the dual frontman system works well as they have equal amounts of energy to play off and this is translated well to the bopping crowds. Honouring some of hip hops greats including Wu-Tang Clan and Kanye West, they quickly get back to their own releases for a rapid finale which sees Mos perform 'Casa Bey' and Talib performing 'Get By'.

Black Star is an American Hip Hop duo, formed in 1997, from Brooklyn, New York. The duo is composed of artists, Mos Def and Talib Kweli.
Black Star arose from the underground Hip Hop movement of the late 1990s, which was in large part due to Rawkus Records, an independent record label stationed in New York City. They released one album, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star on August 26, 1998. The record received critical acclaim, but only moderate commercial success. Black Star (and other members of the Native Tongues Posse) helped shape underground alternative rap, bringing it into the mainstream. Both Mos Def and Talib Kweli’s solo careers have continued with both commercial and critical success.
Black Star’s content is deeply rooted in social consciousness and political issues. The project was released in the wake of the deaths of both The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur, during which an adolescent Hip Hop culture suffered in the vacuum of iconic leadership provided by Smalls and Shakur. Black Star attempted to reconcile these tensions in their songs “Definition” and “Re: Definition” which share the same lyrics: “ I said one, two, three / It’s kinda dangerous to be an emcee / They shot Tupac and Biggie / Too much violence in hip-hop, why-ooo ”
In the summer of 2011 Black Star headlined the Rock the Bells Festival, which also included Miss Lauryn Hill, Cypress Hill, Nas, and Raekwon & Ghostface. They performed their entire 1998 LP.
The duo continues to tour, globally.

Kamala Harris kicks off economic tour with Atlanta visit
Credit: Natrice Miller/AJC
As Vice President Kamala Harris’ convoy rolled through downtown Monday, it swung by the Atlanta University Center where generations of Black students have earned higher education degrees.
From there, she visited an innovation center for Black startups, traversed a busy Atlanta highway that has symbolized economic disparity in the city and then took part in a roundtable discussion about inequality.
Each stop of Harris’ visit to kick off a nationwide economic tour was carefully orchestrated to bring new attention to the Democrat’s efforts to mobilize Black voters, her party’s most loyal constituency.
What she did not talk about during the whirlwind visit was the ongoing protests over President Joe Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war, which has triggered nationwide demonstrations on campuses, including at Emory University and the University of Georgia, and threats of political retribution in November.

The visit, her 12th to Georgia since she took office, came as polls show both have work to do to shore up their support among Black Americans amid a tight rematch against former President Donald Trump. Harris told a crowd of mostly Black business leaders and elected officials she wanted to ensure the administration’s policies were reaching them.
“One of the compelling reasons for me to start this tour now is to ask all the leaders here for help in getting the word out about what’s available to entrepreneurs and small businesses.
“Because we are in the process of putting a lot of money in the streets of America for this growth,” she said. “And we want to make sure everyone has access to the opportunity to take advantage of the contracts and the work that has been generated by this policy push.”
It was a reference to the federal green energy and infrastructure laws that Biden signed into law, incentive-laden packages that have helped generate jobs in Georgia but also triggered criticism of “reckless” spending by Republicans.
Georgia GOP Chair Josh McKoon said Harris’ “word salad” can’t erase damage the administration has inflicted on the economy.
“Every day I’m talking to Georgians who are having to do more with less as the cost of basic necessities like food, housing, electricity and medicine spiral out of control due to the runaway inflation their policies have caused,” he said.
‘Big breakthrough?’
Harris and a coterie of Georgia Democrats repeatedly invoked a recently announced $158 million federal grant for the construction of the Stitch — a planned 14-acre green space over the Downtown Connector — throughout the visit.
The long-planned park spanning the busy Atlanta highway is one of several projects that seek to reconnect intown neighborhoods cut off by construction of interstate highways and knit together historically Black communities separated by the massive projects.
“It’s about bringing people back together,” U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock said. “It’s about expanding opportunities to work and live with dignity. It’s about righting historic wrongs.”
Harris also repeated a promise to increase federal contracts for minority-owned businesses by 50%, an initiative she said would boost disadvantaged firms that have long been left out of lucrative work.
“When you get a federal contract, it is potentially yours for life. And it’s very sustainable and could be the source of great growth,” said Harris said.
The campaign announced the trip to Atlanta days after confirming Biden’s plans to deliver the commencement speech at Morehouse College , which drew threats of protest from critics who say he hasn’t fulfilled promises to better the lives of Black Americans.
And it coincided with fresh pro-Palestinian demonstrations at UGA that were quickly broken up by police who arrested several of the protesters on charges of trespassing .
There were no demonstrations that targeted Harris, whose detailed itinerary wasn’t publicized in advance of her visit. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, one of Trump’s top Georgia allies, accused her of “cowardice” for not addressing the divide during her stop.
“While antisemitism and calls for the eradication of Jewish people are spewed by radical leftists across the country, Harris refuses to condemn these vicious acts,” Jones said.
Some senior Georgia Democrats worry Biden and Harris can’t rekindle the tenuous alliance of urban liberals, suburban moderates, disaffected Republicans and Black voters who fueled his narrow 2020 victory in Georgia.
Trump and other Republicans see Georgia as a cornerstone of his comeback bid, and they have been working to undercut Biden’s support among Black voters.
Trump’s advisers have pointed to a recent visit to a Chick-fil-A in the Vine City neighborhood, where a Black GOP activist helped organize a rousing welcome for Trump that went viral in conservative media.
Still, while some polls show Trump is gaining ground among Black voters, most show Biden retains an enormous lead among those voters.
Emory University political scientist Alan Abramowitz, who recently published an analysis of electoral trends, noted Trump’s “surprisingly robust support” among Black voters in some recent polls.
Abramowitz said recent exit polling and turnout trends made him skeptical of surveys that suggested Republicans were “on the verge of a big breakthrough with Black voters.”
‘Be strong’
Harris’ campaign travel this year aims to put a spotlight on her party’s top policy priorities. She trekked to Atlanta in January to give a pep talk to frustrated voting rights advocates who are facing steep challenges after a series of humbling political and legal setbacks.
She recently joined with reality star Kim Kardashian to promote criminal justice measures aimed at steering nonviolent drug offenders from longer prison sentences. And she will travel to Florida this week for her “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” tour on the same day the state’s anti-abortion law takes effect.
In Atlanta, she started her trip with a visit to the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs, where chief executive Jay Bailey told her about the initiative’s work to build a more vibrant ecosystem of Black-owned businesses.
During a tour of the facility, she quizzed small business owners about their struggles to grow their companies. When one asked her about a federal program from innovators, Harris paused.
“The fact that you are asking this question tells me we have a lot more work to do,” she said.
At a nearby conference center, she joined a moderated conversation with Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings of the “Earn Your Leisure” outlet where she encouraged Black entrepreneurs to seek out mentors and “don’t hear no” even when faced with obstacles.
“Let’s not let society or history impede or silence those ambitions,” she said, adding: “Don’t give up because we need you. Our country needs you. And that’s how we’re going to be strong.”

'New York Undercover' cast to reunite on national tour, stars talk trailblazing '90s cop drama
The cast of the classic 1990s procedural "New York Undercover" is hitting the road for the show's 30th anniversary.
The national tour will feature a reunited cast that includes Malik Yoba , Luna Lauren Velez and Michael DeLorenzo. The trio revealed the news on Monday's episode of The Tamron Hall Show .
"Audiences (have) never had a chance to have this experience with us so we intend to go on the road as (a) cast," Yoba, 56, told host Tamron Hall . "We're going to hit markets across America. We're working with artists that have performed on the show."
"New York Undercover" aired on Fox from 1994 to 1999 and followed detectives J.C. Williams (Yoba), Eddie Torres (DeLorenzo) and Nina Moreno (Velez) in one of the first police dramas to cast actors of color in leading roles.
"We understood the assignment," Yoba said. "The assignment was to push the culture forward in the most authentic way possible."
The group noted that Tamron Hall was their first time doing a daytime interview as a cast, highlighting the lack of promotion the show received. "Despite the fact we were No. 1 in Black and Latino households, at the time, it wasn't regarded as mainstream fare," Yoba continued.
'Pulp Fiction' 30th anniversary reunion: John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, more
"One of the best things we accomplished was the relationships," added DeLorenzo, 64. "We weren't a typical cop show."
The trio noted the iconic music and guest stars on the series, including Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Celia Cruz, The Notorious B.I.G., Al Green, Aaliyah, D'Angelo, SWV, Ziggy and Damian Marley, and more.
'Scrubs' stars gather for a mini reunion: 'Getting the band back together!'
Created by Kevin Arkadie and Dick Wolf — the latter of " Law & Order " fame — the series also starred Patti D'Arbanville, George Gore II, Fatima Faloye and Lee Wong. The series was nominated for several NAACP Image Awards, including two wins for Yoba in his role.
Velez, 59, and Yoba previously reunited for a "New York Undercover" TV film in 2019, produced by Wolf and Ben Watkins.
In 2018, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline reported that ABC had ordered a pilot for a "New York Undercover" reboot, written and produced by Watkins and Wolf. Deadline later reported that the pilot was still being shopped in 2020, with Peacock said to be in negotiations to pick up the series and "The Chi" showrunner Ayanna Floyd Davis attached.

Akuma rages into Street Fighter 6 on May 22
Akuma will challenge foes worthy enough to face him in Fighting Ground, World Tour, and the Battle Hub.
Legend tells of a man so consumed by his pursuit of strength that his soul and body have now faded into nothingness. Though many wish he were a mere legend, Akuma will rise again in Street Fighter 6 , to challenge foes worthy enough to face him on May 22. Will you harness the power of the Satsui no Hado or succumb to it?
Akuma made his debut in Super Street Fighter II Turbo as a hidden boss and playable character. In Street Fighter 6, Akuma’s thirst for strength has taken a maddening toll. He carves figures of the hundreds of opponents he has felled and places them in the cave he resides, their silence beckoning him to fall deeper into his path of inner strife.
Nakayama-san’s comments on his design: Akuma now has a more striking presence complete with gray hair. We also used Buddha statues and animals as references for his musculature in an attempt to give the character a more memorable aesthetic.
Like the rest of the Year 1 characters, Akuma can become your Master in World Tour. Find him in a new area, Enma’s Hollow, located on the island of Gokuento, but beware the effects of the Satsui no Hado lest you become tormented by its hunger. After increasing your bond with Akuma, he’ll teach you his demonic moves, which you can then assign to your avatar to be used in your World Tour travels or in Avatar Battles in the Battle Hub.
As a man who has spent his life honing his skills, Akuma’s move set will be familiar to long-time fans, but the Satsui no Hado has unlocked new abilities. His fast walk speed and long-reaching normals allow him to control space and the flow of the fight.
Let’s start with Akuma’s iconic moves that make him a well-rounded pursuer. His infamous fireball, Gou Hadoken is back, and can be charged up so that a “red fireball” is released instead, giving Akuma more options upon hit or block. Everyone’s favorite air fireball, Zanku Hadoken, can cover Akuma’s aggressive approach. His dragon punch, Gou Shoryuken, works as an anti-air or as a combo ender. Finally, Tatsumaki Zanku-Kyaku sees Akuma spinning forward in a series of kicks that change properties based on which kick button is pressed.
Like his previous iterations, Akuma uses Ashura Senku to glide on the battlefield cloaked in shadows. Be wary of using this ability since it can be stopped mid-way by an opponent’s attacks. However, Akuma has honed this move’s vulnerabilities and can now use Oboro Throw during the approach to surprise opponents.
Adamant Flame is one of Akuma’s new moves, where he performs a forward thrust engulfed in flames. This move is useful in combos and for exploiting vulnerable opponents due to its long reach. The OD version will wall splat opponents, opening up more opportunities in the corner.
Demon Raid is the Street Fighter 6 version of Hyakkishu. As Akuma leaps into the air with this move, choose to follow up with a low kick, overhead attack, dive kick, or to end the leap early. The OD version of Demon Raid unlocks two more follow-ups: an air fireball and an air tatsu.
Akuma’s Level 1 Super Art is Messatsu Gohado, where he fires a highly concentrated ball of Satsui no Hado. Like most Level 1s, this move is invulnerable on start-up. Akuma has a second Level 1 called Tenma Gozanku where he unleashes the fireball from the air.
Empyrean’s End is Akuma’s Level 2 Super Art where he turns the Satsui no Hado into a powerful flame and ignites it within the opponent. Using this move close to the corner will result in a wall splat where Akuma can continue his pressure or damage. Empyrean’s End is also invulnerable on start-up.
Akuma’s first Level 3 Super Art is Sip of Calamity, another move that is invulnerable on start-up! He throws opponents on the ground with their face and follows up with a single devastating blow.
Finally, the move you’ve all been waiting for: Shun Goku Satsu or the “Raging Demon.” This second Level 3 Super Art can only be performed when his Vitality is low enough for a Critical Art and can be used to end combos. This time, he allows you to see what happens during the one-second worth of nightmares.
Coming with this update is a new stage, Enma’s Hollow, where Akuma resides to continue his hellbent training. Year 1 Ultimate Pass owners will receive this stage on May 22.
Akuma’s Outfit 2 is inspired by his debut look in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Speaking of outfits, Rashid, A.K.I., Ed, and Akuma will have their Outfit 3s also available for purchase when Akuma releases, and will automatically be distributed to all Year 1 Ultimate Pass owners.
One last thing before we sign off. With the Akuma update comes the major balance patch we mentioned in the past where all characters will receive changes. We’ll have more to share about this in the future as we approach May 22.
Get ready to unleash your inner demon when Akuma rages in!

Theatres in Moscow
Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.
There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.
A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.
Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.
The Bolshoi Theatre
The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.
If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.
In August the Bolshoi is closed.
The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre
This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.
The Novaya Opera
“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .
Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center
The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.
Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory
These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.
Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)
This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.
