Matt Fitzpatrick secured a seventh European Tour title with a three-shot victory in a thrilling finish at the Estrella Damm N.A Andalucia Masters.

Final leaderboard

Estrella Damm N.A Andalucia Masters

The Englishman overturned a three-stroke deficit on the final day at Valderrama, opening with 15 consecutive pars and birdieing two of his last three holes to post a bogey-free 69 and the week on six under.

Fitzpatrick trailed for large periods but took advantage of Sebastian Soderberg dropping three shots over his closing two holes, with the Swede finishing in tied-second on three under alongside Min Woo Lee, while overnight leader Laurie Canter's hopes faded with a final-round 76.

"It's on the bucket list to win round Valderrama with the history that it has," Fitzpatrick said. "To do it bogey-free on Sunday as well is extra special. It's amazing, particularly the way I did It - very patient all day, didn't try to press anything, stuck to our targets and managed to hole the putts at the end. I'm delighted with the win."

Canter started the day with a three-shot lead but saw his lead cut to one when Soderberg followed a close-range birdie at the second by holing from 10 feet at the next and then making a 15-foot eagle at the par-five fourth.

The Englishman picked up a close-range birdie at the fifth but followed a three-putt double-bogey at the par-five sixth with another three-putt bogey at the seventh, seeing him lose his overnight lead, only to reach the turn level with Soderberg when the Swede bogey the seventh.

Soderberg picked up a birdie at the 11th and made a 10-footer to save par at the next, where Canter dropped a shot after finding sand off the tee, before cancelling out a bogey at the 13th by converting from five feet at the 15th to give himself a two-shot advantage.

The tournament was blown wide open as Soderberg lost his ball into trees at the par-five 17th and three-putted from off the green for a double-bogey, dropping him back to four under alongside Canter and Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick ended his run of 15 pars with a 10-foot birdie at the 16th, where Canter dropped a shot after a wayward tee shot, while Soderberg's hopes ended when he failed to get up and down from the rough to save par at the last.

Canter found the water with his approach into the par-five 17th and carded a second successive bogey, as Fitzpatrick pitched to six feet and made another birdie to take a three-shot cushion to the final hole.

Fitzpatrick finished short of the green with his approach but was able to salvage a par and close a blemish-free winning round, as Canter also made a four to end the week in a seven-way tie for fourth.

Victory is Fitzpatrick's first of the season and moves him up to fifth in the Race to Dubai standings, with the win also set to move the Englishman back inside the world's top 25.

The Open 2024 LIVE: Golf leaderboard and scores from round two as Shane Lowry takes clubhouse lead

Shane Lowry holds the clubhouse lead after round two of the 152nd Open Championship , in pursuit of his second Claret Jug, with English major debutant Daniel Brown and Justin Rose on his tail.

Lowry added a second round of 69 to his opening 66 for a halfway total of seven under par which always looked insurmountable due to a strengthening wind causing havoc for the later starters.

The 2019 champion recovered from a double bogey on the 11th with birdies on the 16th and 18th to hold a two-shot lead over the English duo of Justin Rose and Dan Brown, who both had to come through 36-hole final qualifiers earlier this month. Brown, who had completed a flawless 65 at 9.33pm on Thursday, battled to a second round of 72, while Rose returned a superb 68 and has amazingly dropped just one shot in 36 holes.

But Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods missed the cut after struggling once more.

Follow reaction from round two of the 152nd Open Championship below:

The Open 2024: Latest scores

20:08 , Lawrence Ostlere

Harman finds the fairway on the 18th and that should be enough for him to make the cut.

With that, we will wrap up our coverage today. Here’s a look at the top 10 of the leaderboard:

B Horschel -2

D Burmester -2

S Scheffler -2

C Conners -1

X Schauffele -1

P Cantlay -1

20:01 , Lawrence Ostlere

-7 Lowry, -5 Brown, Rose; -2 Scheffler, Burmester, Horschel

The reigning champion Brian Harman pushes his tee shot on the par-three 17th just over the back of the green. he dinks a lovely chip close, though, and that should be his par. At +5, he’s got a couple of shots leeway to make the cut.

Hatton is angry after missing a par putt on the 16th, and that’s a bogey. With that, he slides back to +7 and that will mean missing the cut. Four bogeys on the back nine have undone his good work earlier in the day.

19:54 , Lawrence Ostlere

Jon Rahm finishes a solid day with a missed birdie putt and taps in for par, and the Spaniard will go into the weekend on +1. That’s enough for tied 13th on the leaderboard, but he’s eight strokes behind leader Shane Lowry.

MacIntyre started the day with two triple bogeys. He ends it with a three-under-par back nine to stick around tomorrow, on +5.

19:50 , Lawrence Ostlere

Bob MacIntyre thrashes out of the rough down the right side of the 18th fairway and finds the front of the green. He’s been marvellous on the back nine, at three under, and is set to make it to the weekend after he was eight over par through the first six holes today.

McIlroy finds a greenside bunker on the 16th.

19:46 , Lawrence Ostlere

Rory McIlroy blasts a 383-yard drive down the middle of the fairway on 16 and that’s as good a tee shot as we’ll see all week there. Unfortunately, it counts for little when you’re on +12, but he seemed to enjoy that one.

Up ahead on 17, DeChambeau hacks out of the thick grass, through the green and down the other side into a little furrow. He kicks his club. He’s going to miss the cut too.

19:37 , Lawrence Ostlere

Bryson DeChambeau can only par the par-five 16th and that is a golden opportunity missed. He’s on +8 going into the final two holes and needs a birdie-birdie finish now.

Rahm makes a tidy up and down to par the 17th after missing the green with his tee shot. He’s on +1 going to the last.

19:28 , Lawrence Ostlere

Rahm does indeed drop a shot, though only after missing a good chance for par. He trudges on to the 17th.

It looks like +6 is going to be the cut, and that’s good news for Bob MacIntyre, who hits back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 to give himself a great chance of being here on the weekend.

19:19 , Lawrence Ostlere

Oh no – a mistake by Rahm, who overhits his lay-up on the par-five 16th and runs into the burn trickling across the fairway. He had done so well to get to -1 and in contention but he’s going to fall back now.

Justin Rose speaks on the conditions today at Troon: “I think today it tipped over the edge where the elements were in control, meaning that you were aiming right of a pin and slicing the ball and seeing the ball hook. So the wind had all the control on the ball. The player couldn’t have control over the wind. I think that’s the tipping point today. Yesterday I felt like it was playable, a fair fight. Today was a bit more survival.”

19:01 , Chris Wilson

Rahm lasers in a birdie on 15 to get level par, and if he can keep this form up he could well be in contention over the weekend.

On 17, Niemann has made some shots back from the horror at the Postage Stamp and he’s at level too.

MacIntyre gets a birdie at 15 too, and he moves to +6 just as the projected cut does too.

On 13, Hatton overcooks his approach with the iron and he’s looking at moving back to +6 himself.

No sign of a recovery from Hovland either on 14, as his tee shot overruns the pin by a distance.

18:55 , Chris Wilson

The projected cut stands at +5, so there’ll be some worried players out there.

MacIntyre birdies the 15th to give himself hope.

On the par-three 14th, DeChambeau’s tee shot has too much on it and he’s not happy as it finds the bunker. He needs to find three shots over the next five holes, and he’s not getting one here.

Harman attempts to ensure his weekend place with a good tee shot, and he drains the putt for a birdie and +4.

Hatton misses the par shot by quite a distance and he could be double bogeying here – he does, moving to +5.

Homa triple bogeys for +6. It’s falling apart for some here.

At the other end of the spectrum, Rahm is looking dialled in after a monster drive is followed by a chip that gets him within birdie distance.

18:47 , Chris Wilson

Rahm with another birdie opportunity as a brilliant drive goes high and lands within a few feet of the pin. He sinks the putt and moves to +1. His tee shot on 15 is good too, catching the wind to sail onto the fairway.

MacIntyre has the half-chance at the birdie, but it’s inches wide and he’ll stay on +7. McIlroy is showing no signs of improvement yet.

And there’s a late nightmare for Homa as his second shot flies into one of the on-course lounges.

18:35 , Chris Wilson

Rahm gets par again to stay on +2, but it’s really going against Fleetwood as he pushes his par attempt wide and goes to +9.

Homa, who’s squeezing through as it stands, finds some thick bushes with his tee of 12, and he’ll need another ball.

Henley continues his bad day with a bogey on 14, taking him to +3.

McIlroy slices his tee shot off 13 – that’s a man who needs his round to finish ASAP. DeChambeau’s effort is better but still finds the rough, and he needs to find some form quickly if he’s going to be playing at the weekend. He’s on +8.

18:30 , Chris Wilson

It’s really not happening for a few players out there, with McIlroy the obvious one as he sits on +13.

It’s not looking encouraging for MacIntyre either, as he fails to make it in regulation on 13, but his third shot puts him within a few feet of the pin.

Hatton’s had a bit of luck though, as the ball he hit out has been dropped fairly close to the green. That’ll save him a couple of shots, as his putt attempt lands within tap-in distance.

Henley, who’s dropped four shots so far today, looks to claw back some hope as he tees off on 12.

18:23 , Chris Wilson

Hatton’s tee shot off the 11th looks to have landed out of bounds.

On 12, Rahm guides home the putt for par to remain on +2. Steady for the Spaniard over the last few holes.

Below is a replay of the birdie on the 18th that took Rose to within two shots of the leaders.

Biggest roar of the week so far. A birdie on the 18th for Justin Rose. What a round. pic.twitter.com/VdHeZSX1sP — The Open (@TheOpen) July 19, 2024

18:09 , Chris Wilson

Thomas is coming to the end of a disappointing day as he squeezes past the banker and lands on the green at 18. He’s still on +4 but he’ll have the chance for a birdie to finish – it’s short though, and he takes par to end the day on four over.

Rahm tees off on 12th and carries well, giving him a good chance of making the green in regulation. Fleetwood tees off looking to sneak back into the cut, but it swings wide and lands in the rough.

McIlroy’s second shot on 10 sets him up for a birdie shot, but you wouldn’t back him at this point.

On hole on and DeChambeau continues his fight to make the weekend, but he misses the birdie putt and stays on +7.

17:59 , Chris Wilson

Brilliant! What a way to finish from Rose, as he puts it left to right and drains the birdie putt on the final hole to finish with a round of 68. He’s two shots behind going into the weekend, an he gets the biggest cheer of the day so far.

On 11, Rahm skims the hole as he looks for the birdie, and he’ll take par. Hatton makes par on nine to stay at +2, while Henley falls back off the green on 12 and will stay on +1 at best.

17:45 , Chris Wilson

-7 Lowry, -5 Brown; -4 Rose; -2 Scheffler, Burmester, Horschel

Worth mentioning that the projected cut is now +6 as it stands.

Adam Scott is potentially playing to make the cut as he tries to sink the birdie putt on 18, but it’s short. He finishes the day with a round of 77,and he’s right on the border with +5.

Rahm tees off on the 11th, and gets to the first cut off the fairway.

On 16, Thomas misses a birdie chance to continue his daunting start.

Rose has advanced up the 18th, and his second shot takes him past the pin and onto the green. He won’t be finishing on a birdie though.

17:36 , Chris Wilson

Rose sinks the birdie and so he approaches the final two holes at four under. Can he gain another stroke on Brown and Lowry? His tee shot sets him up with a chance...but he can’t capitalise, slotting in for par.

On 10, Rahm’s second shot is pulled left and he won’t be gaining a shot here.

Harman moves to +6 as he fails to save par despite escaping the sand on eight. Hatton has clawed his way back to +2, and he should be sure of making the cut.

On nine, DeChambeau guides the chip in to birdie and move to +6, right on the edge if the cut. It may be enough depending on how the wind holds up.

17:24 , Chris Wilson

-7 Lowry, -5 Brown; -3 Rose; -2 Scheffler, Burmester, Horschel

Rose’s third shot on 16 punches wide but it’s set up for a birdie opportunity.

A lovely break for Rahm to take him to +2 as he rolls in from almost 50 yards.

Harman is the latest on the bunker in the Postage Stamp.

Fleetwood bogeys, so he’s on +7, and Aberg continues a difficult day with a bogey for +9.

17:17 , Chris Wilson

On nine, Rahm takes the iron off the tee and it lands among the crowd. Henley is inches from sinking the birdie for even, but he has to settle for par.

DeChambeau lips out and stays on +7, so he has work to do to make the cut.

McIlroy is up to +13 as he takes his second shot on the seventh, and he knows he’s coming to the end of his time at Troon.

Harman still has hope, but he finds the bunker off the tee.

On 16, Rose’s second shot on the par-five hole has a good line and takes him close to the green.

17:07 , Chris Wilson

On 14, Thomas is back on +4 and his latest chip overshoots the green.

On 15, Rose chips into birdie distance and then he’s so unlucky as it lips out.

McIlroy is another who’s getting no joy out there, as he’s on to +12 and has extremely slim chances of making the cut.

The Postage Stamp has claimed another victim as Niemann ends up in three different bunkers for a quintuple bogey. He’s up to +4 now.

16:51 , Chris Wilson

Rose tees off on the par-three 14, taking the iron for the chip, but he misses the green and it kicks off the back of the bunker.

On seven, DeChambeau tees off as he looks to improve on +6, and he’s laughing as he finds the bunker.

Elsewhere, Henley drops a stroke on eight, and he moves to +1.

16:36 , Chris Wilson

Things are improving for Thomas with his second birdie in the last three as he wraps up the 12th.

On seven, Rahm gets out of the rough with his second shot, but it lands in the greenside bunker. He chips to within a few feet, and an up and down should save par.

Rose attempts the birdie putt on 13, but the wind is dragging it and it’s short.

16:29 , Chris Wilson

Fleetwood has dropped a shot on the sixth and he’s now in a lot of danger of not making the cut – he stands on +6.

Rahm is feeling a little more safe as he goes for the birdie putt – it lips out but he takes par and stays on +3.

On four, McIlroy is in danger of the snowman and he lips out with his seventh shot, finishing for the triple bogey, taking him to +11.

16:20 , Chris Wilson

Henley has shot two over so far today so he’s back on level par now.

On 18, Brown is just under 80 yards from the pin, and he easily makes the green but looks a little disappointed as it overruns the hole. He pushes the birdie shot wide, but he makes par to end the day on -5, having shot 72.

On 12, Rose’s second shot bounces into the greenside bunker. Can he stay bogey-free?

More misery for McIlroy – he clips a shot well past the green and into a bunker on the opposite side. He’ll be on +10 at least by the time this is over.

16:07 , Chris Wilson

-7 Lowry, -5 Brown; -4 Rose; -2 Scheffler, Burmester, Horschel, Henley

Not quite happening for Rahm today, as he misses another birdie shot on five. He makes par though.

Brown chips onto the green on 17 with his second shot, and he should secure par, but he miscues it, settling for a bogey and going to -5. His tee shot on 18 sets him up too.

McIlroy has climbed down to +8 as he tees off on four, while Rose splits the fairway with another good tee shot, this one off 12.

15:56 , Chris Wilson

Brown does birdie, and he’s up to -6 as he walks to 17. His tee shot on the penultimate hole runs past the pin and onto the edge of the first cut off the green.

Brian Harman misses par on the third so he moves to +3, while a Thomas birdie putt is sunk to move him to +5.

No more luck for McIlroy as it’s lying deep in the rough and he chips out onto the first cut past the pin.

Rose’s approach on 11 is well-judged, slightly overrunning the pin and setting him up for par once more.

15:49 , Chris Wilson

It gets worse for MacIntyre, who’s struggling on four.

Quite the opposite for Rose though, he makes par on 10 to stay in third. The same goes for Brown, who isn’t far from the eagle and will surely get the birdie on 15.

MacIntyre has tripled bogeyed, so he moves to +9.

Justin Thomas’ horror day continues, and he’s up to +6 as he battles through the start of the back nine. A bit of luck for Fleetwood though, as he birdies four to go to +4.

The projected cut is +5 at the moment.

15:38 , Chris Wilson

DeChambeau is toiling away on +5, but his second shot on the third takes him to the green. He can’t find the birdie though, settling for par.

McIlroy plugs his shot into the greenside bunker on two, and he’s getting unlucky already. He drags himself out well though and has a chance to make par – he drains it, and that up and down could be a key moment for him!

On five, Niemann bogeys and drops back to -1.

15:31 , Chris Wilson

-7 Lowry, -5 Brown; -4 Rose; -2 Scheffler, Burmester, Horschel, Henley, Niemann

Gusts are hitting 34mph in some parts.

McIlroy has a putting chance for birdie from deep, but it’s a tough ask and it falls short. He makes par on the first.

Rahm misses his own birdie chance on the third, and he’ll stay on +2 – or not! He misses the put and moves to +3. Fleetwood does the same, and he can’t climb out of +5.

Rose sinks the putt for par on the ninth and he’s the only man on the field with no bogeys today. He’s still -4. He’s not affected by the wind on the tee at 10 either.

Brown sends the birdie putt wide on 15, so he’ll have to settle for par at best.

Joaquin Niemann has moved to -2 through four.

MacIntyre’s been forced to take his medicine on three, having made his way onto the green on the third and missed the shot for par on the fourth. He’s on +6 at the moment.

15:19 , Chris Wilson

Brown is looking to make some ground on Lowry as he finishes is final three holes of the day. He tees off on 14, and it overruns the pin but there’s a chance for birdie. He doesn’t make it through, and he starts 15 by making the fairway.

Big cheers as Rory McIlroy tees off, looking to improve his score of +7. It’s a great effort, carrying far and avoiding the fairway bunkers. He follows it up with a shot onto the green, but it’ll be par likely.

On the ninth, Rose edges towards the pin, and it should be par.

Thomas, who’s had a difficult day so far on his way to +3, chips out of the sand but won’t claw back a birdie on the ninth.

The Open 2024: Scottie Scheffler very much in touch after round two

15:02 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Scottie Scheffler’s route down the 18th includes a tour of a fairway bunker, taking in the sights on his first visit to these parts. He clips out of the sand and then spits a 65-yard wedge up on to the dancefloor.

Can he do-si-do down for a four? Playing partner Jordan Spieth gives him a good read, failing to make his birdie putt from a similar spot...but Scheffler can’t make it stick. A bogey at the last and a 70 for Scheffler.

Two-under, though, is handy at this juncture.

The Open 2024: Nightmare start for Bob McIntyre

14:56 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Bob McIntyre would have been happy enough at +1 overnight, thinking a good round today could set him up for a weekend title charge after winning the Scottish Open last weekend. Alas, it’s all gone wrong, rather, on the first, finding rough with drive and approach and then up against the wall of one of those devilishly deep bunkers.

And in the sand he will stay as he cloths his effort into the brickwork! A nightmare. He pops it out at the second attempt but an opening seven sends him tumbling down the leaderboard.

Better news for Justin Rose, though - he’s made that short birdie putt and is up into outright third all alone.

14:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There is some very, very good golf being played out there. Conditions are far from easy with the wind up, and scoring, on the whole, is beginning to slow as a result, but Justin Rose tattoos the seventh flag with a delicious approach. He should gobble that birdie up.

The Open 2024: Shane Lowry extends advantage!

14:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Shane Lowry is into the clubhouse with a two-shot lead! It’s all clicking for the 2019 champion, watching his birdie putt on the last crawl in the front door to seal a 69 and take him to -7. Superb!

14:38 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A handy one to have for Justin Rose, salvaging par on the sixth from distance. Still blemish-free, the Englishman - everyone else has a bogey at least to mark their card over the first two days. Impressive.

Tyrrell Hatton hits out at course at The Open: ‘Unfortunately, that’s where it’s going’

14:36 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Tyrrell Hatton hit out at Royal Troon after a difficult first round at The Open , suggesting that the Ayrshire links course has been made overly long and is no longer enjoyable to play.

The Englishman shot an opening round 73 to sit eight shots back at two-over-par, recording 16 pars and a pair of bogeys on Thursday.

Tyrrell Hatton hits out at The Open course: ‘Unfortunately, that’s where it’s going’

14:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Deft hands out of the sand from Scottie Scheffler, chopping out to leave himself an inviting putt to climb to three-under. And in it goes! He joins Justin Rose three back.

14:34 , Harry Latham-Coyle

14:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Shane Lowry is dialled in. Picture perfect up the 18th, sending a low iron scutting along the firm fairway.

14:27 , Harry Latham-Coyle

So close to a miracle putt for our leader on 17, Shane Lowry’s long-range effort looking pretty all the way. An inch to the left, in the end.

14:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Justin Thomas is dropping like a stone. Bogey, bogey, bogey for the American, undoing all of yesterday’s hard work across holes two through four.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are both in at one-under. A 68 for Cantlay, a 72 for Schauffele and both firmly in the mix heading into the weekend.

The Open 2024: Tiger Woods finishes +14

14:21 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A par on the last for Tiger Woods, who receives a mighty ovation striding up to the 18th green. Not the two rounds he would have wanted at Troon, but judging by how punchy he was in dismissing retirement talk earlier in the week, I’d suspect we’ll see him try to roar again at Royal Portrush next year.

The Open 2024: Shane Lowry takes the lead!

14:16 , Harry Latham-Coyle

-6 Lowry, -5 Brown; -3 Rose; -2 Horschel, Burmester, Scheffler, Hojgaard, Henley

We have a solo leader once more. Shane Lowry can’t find his eagle putt on the 16th having played two quite lovely shots on to the par five, but a birdie takes him clear at the head of the field. Tidy stuff from the Irishman, who’d love the wind to get up a little later once he’s safely in the clubhouse.

14:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Another shot gone for Justin Thomas, leaking a putt to the right on nine. Back to evens.

The wind is getting up at Troon, whipping in off the Ayrshire coastline. Justin Rose very nearly drains a birdie putt on the fifth, which is playing as the second toughest hole on the course today. A tap-in par will suit him fine from there, though.

The Open 2024: Tiger Woods nearing end

14:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Oh dear. It’s not been Tiger Woods’ weekend, a brief frisson of excitement amid a fast start yesterday quickly dissipating. A ten-foot par putt slides past and it’s +14 for Tiger, the end very much nigh.

Pars for playing partners Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.

14:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The putts are starting to fall at Troon. Collin Morikawa curls one in from the other side of the 16th green to get under par for the day and +1 overall. Work to be done, but a couple of trademark immaculate irons from here on in could take Morikawa into the weekend with a bit of momentum.

13:59 , Harry Latham-Coyle

-5 Lowry, Brown; -3 Rose; -2 Horschel, Burmester, Scheffler, Hojgaard, Henley

Brown birdies the 10th to move back into the joint lead, while Rose birdies the fourth to move into third on -3!

Lowry looks to hit back with a long birdie attempt on 15, but it’s short and he settles for par. He’s even for the day.

Finally a break from par for Scheffler as he drains the putt for a birdie on 14. He’s up to -2!

Fitzpatrick has slumped to +6 and just missed a birdie shot on the 15th.

13:50 , Chris Wilson

-5 Lowry; -4 Brown; -2 Noren, Horschel, Burmester, Rose, Hojgaard, Hughes and more

Not a great start for Thomas as he drops another shot on the fourth and moves to -1.

Scheffler produces a lovely shot to dig himself out of the rough and find the green with his second shot of the 13th, and he’s somehow created a birdie chance for himself, but he has to settle for par.

Lowry produces a big par save as he gets up and down on 14 to stay in the lead. He’s irritated with his tee shot on 15 though, slicing it into the rough.

Schauffele and Cantlay are still battling through on -1, and the 16th gives the former a birdie opportunity that he narrowly misses. Cantlay follows by doing the same.

Elsewhere, Colin Morikawa, who’s currently on 15, has clawed his way back to +2.

Notable finishers so far include Horschel and Burmester on -2, Conners and Day on -1, and Dustin Johnson on +1.

13:39 , Chris Wilson

-5 Lowry; -4 Brown; -2 Thomas, Noren, Horschel, Burmester, Rose, Hojgaard, Hughes and more

Lowry secures par on the 13th, while Brown’s approach on the ninth finds the first cut. He gets to the green with his third shot, but skims the hole with his putt for par and he moves to -4.

Schauffele tees off on 16 and finds the middle of the fairway, and Cantlay follows by cutting left and finding the rough.

Thomas clips out the bunker on the third, and after taking a sand shower he makes the green with his third shot, but he doesn’t look confident of the scramble.

13:30 , Chris Wilson

-5 Lowry, Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Burmester, Rose, Hojgaard, Hughes and more

A great chip from Scheffler means he’ll probably save par on the 12th – he does, and that’s seven in a row.

Thomas has dropped a shot on the second and he moves to -2.

Brown tees off on the ninth and he finds the fairway. Lowry finds the green on the 13th and sets himself up for a birdie shot.

On 16, Schauffele’s approach finds the green, but it’ll be par at best to stay on -1.

Spieth has the birdie chance on the 12th, but he’ll have to settle for par and remaining on +3.

Woods has climbed to +13 as he navigates the 15th. A disappointing two days for the 15-time major winner.

A more promising day comes to an end for Burmester as the South African misses the birdie shot on 18 and will head into the clubhouse on -2.

13:18 , Chris Wilson

-5 Lowry, Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Hughes and more

Scheffler tees off on the 12th but he’s sliced it into the bushes.

On 14, Schauffele sinks the putt for par to stay on -1. Cantlay, who’s dropped to -1 too, also makes par.

Brown has a birdie attempt on eight for the lead, but it’s short. Up on 12, Lowry looks to recover from the 11th with a birdie attempt from deep, but it’s misjudged.

13:10 , Chris Wilson

-5 Lowry, Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Cantlay, Hughes and more

Burmester has moved back up to -2 after a birdie on the 16th. Woods, on the 14th, tees off to try and improve on +12.

Scheffler has the birdie opportunity on 11 from just off the green, but it’s inches wide.

Jason Day finishes the round with a ridiculously close birdie attempt and a score of 68. He’s in that group of -1.

Elsewhere, Justin Thomas makes par on the first.

13:04 , Chris Wilson

-7 Lowry; -5 Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Cantlay, Hughes and more

So Lowry’s ball from his second shot was found, and he’s now taking his fourth shot from the fairway in line with where that landed in the bushes. It’ll be a double bogey at best, and he lands just short of the green with the fourth shot.

The Irishman’s putt attempt lands wide but he should tap in for a double bogey...and he does, so he moves down to five under.

Meanwhile Brown chips his own effort onto the green on the seventh, and he’ll have a slim chance of the birdie and probably an outright lead.

Jason Day is making his approach on the 18th and he makes the green for a birdie chance as he looks to finish on -2.

12:57 , Chris Wilson

Schauffele couldn’t save par as Cantlay did, so he moves down to -1.

Lowry is currently waiting for the solution to his problem, as it looks like his second ball was found. It didn’t originally seem like it was a provisional.

Alex Noren has fallen back to -2 after a bogey on the fourth. Schauffele, who’s deep in the rough as he lines up his approach on the 13th, salvages a chance at a birdie with a great chip onto the green.

Justin Thomas, an early clubhouse leader yesterday, tees off for the day but he drags it left and into the rough among the crowd.

12:49 , Chris Wilson

-7 Lowry; -5 Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Cantlay, Schauffele, Hughes and more

Justin Rose tees off looking to gain some early ground, and it’s a good start.

Scheffler is looking to scramble as his third shot on the par-four 10th finds the green. He makes it, and stays on -1.

Cantlay makes par on the 12th to stay on -2 and -4 for the day.

Spieth gets his second bogey of the day and he’s on +1 now.

12:41 , Chris Wilson

Hojgaard has teed off, but it’s not the start he wanted as he hooks it into the rough. Adam Scott follows with a better effort, landing central on the fairway.

Lowry tees off on the 11th and it pushes left, landing in the rough. He’s 177 yards from the pin, and it’s so unlucky as he hooks it across the fairway and into the crowd and the bushes on the other side. He makes the green with his fourth shot, but it’ll be a bogey at best.

Scheffler has finished the front nine with a par, and he’s lurking near the chasing group on -1. His tee shot on the 10th finds the rough though.

Spieth, who’s still on even par, shouts an expletive as he tees off on the 10th. Not happy.

12:31 , Chris Wilson

Lowry narrowly misses the birdie putt on the 10th but he makes par ahead of the notorious Railway hole.

Brown misses the birdie putt too – this one on the fifth – but he should make par.

Alex Noren can’t capitalise on his birdie on the second, making par on the third to stay tied on -3. Thomas, the other player on -3, tees off at 12:53.

Jordan Spieth remains on level par after the ninth.

12:27 , Chris Wilson

Horschel misses the birdie attempt so he finishes the day with a round of 68, and is among the group on -2 along with Schauffele, who just made par on the 11th.

They’ve been joined by Cantlay, who just birdied the same hole.

12:22 , Chris Wilson

-7 Lowry; -5 Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Burmester, Schauffele, Hughes and more

Lowry’s tee shot on the 10th carries for over 310 yards, and he clips it away from the crowd on the second.

Noren has moved up to -3 after securing that birdie on the second. Brown tees off on the par-three fifth and avoids the greenside bunkers, so looks set for par at least.

Horschel’s approach on the 18th is okay, but he’ll make par at best. Burmester drops a shot on the 14th to move down to -1.

Morikawa misses the putt for par and moves to +4 – as it stands he’s not making the cut, but a lot will likely change.

12:15 , Chris Wilson

-7 Lowry; -5 Brown; -3 Thomas; -2 Horschel, Burmester, Schauffele, Hughes and more

Cantlay misses the birdie shot in the end, as does Horschel, and they stay on one and two under respectively.

Lowry has a 35-foot putt for birdie on the ninth, so it’s asking a lot – and he goes just wide. He’ll finish the front nine on two underfoot the day.

Schauffele tees off on the problematic par-four 11th and it’s a great effort from blind, landing on the fairway.

Koepka goes for the birdie on the 11th but he skims it, and he’s staying on +1.

Woods makes par on 10, but he’ll have very little chance of making the cut of course.

Alex Noren has started for the day too, making par on the first hole before setting up a great chance for an early birdie on the second.

Brown makes the up and down for the bogey, and he goes to -5.

12:09 , Chris Wilson

-7 Lowry; -6 Brown; -3 Thomas; -2 Horschel, Burmester, Schauffele, Hughes and more

Frozen rope for Shane Lowry as he tees off on the ninth. He just about rolls onto the green with the approach shot to set up a birdie chance.

Cantlay will get the chance to move to two under after a good approach shot, while Spieth might move to -1 after doing the same on the seventh.

Brown’s ball is lying deep in the rough but he hooks it out and could save par on the fourth – but he won’t now as the third shot finds the first cut.

Schauffele goes for the birdie at 10 but it’s wide.

12:00 , Chris Wilson

Lowry has the 11-foot putt attempt for the lead – and he drains it! He’s two under for the day and he’s at -7.

Brooks Koepka will stay on one over as his birdie shot goes wide.

Spieth’s approach on the seventh is judged well, landing within birdie distance, and he sinks it to move to even par. On the same hole, Scheffler’s birdie putt falls short and he’ll stay on -1.

Woods misses the putt for par on the ninth and he enters the back nine on +11.

Horschel is the latest to join the group on -2 as he birdies the 16th.

Conners, Day, Cantlay and Scheffler are all one shot behind that group on -1.

11:54 , Chris Wilson

Brown has a chance to save for par but it’s from fairly deep, but he makes it to stay in the joint lead.

Cantlay’s approach on the ninth lands short of the green, and he might have to scramble as he looks to continue climbing up the leaderboard.

Lowry tees off on the par-three eighth and it’s a good one – it’ll be par at the very least. Matt Fitzpatrick, who’s fallen to +3, finds the greenside bunker with his attempt.

11:46 , Chris Wilson

Jason Day has birdied the 13th so he moves to -1. Jordan is trying to get back to -2, but he edges a shot past the pin and onto the first cut. He’ll have to settle for a bogey and level par.

Scheffler is still looking to join the chasing pack on -2, and his tee shot on the seventh will give him a chance.

Shane Lowry misses a chance to regain the outright lead as his putt skims the hole, but he’ll make par.

11:39 , Chris Wilson

Lowry’s tee shot on the seventh is a good one, carrying for over 250 yards.

Schauffele has a birdie attempt on the eighth and he drains it for back-to-back birdies and a score of -2.

Scheffler has work to do to save par as he finds the greenside bunker with his approach on the sixth...but he’ll do it! He hooks a great chip out of the bunker, and he’ll get up and down to save par.

Cantlay has a birdie attempt on the ninth to move to -1 – it’s not an easy putt but he makes it for his third birdie of the day!

Spieth is off to a good start on the sixth as he finds the green easily with his tee shot and sets up the birdie opportunity.

11:32 , Chris Wilson

Schauffele makes his first birdie of the day and he’s back to -1, and his tee shot on the next hole is solid.

Brown makes the green in two on the second, but a birdie will be difficult from there – he misjudges the line and taps in for par.

Koepka finds the green with his approach on the ninth, and he’ll make par at best.

Lowry’s birdie putt on the sixth falls short, and he stays on -6.

11:22 , Chris Wilson

Lowry has moved back down to -6 after a bogey on the fifth. Brown has stayed with him, making par on the first, but his tee shot on second is pulled into the rough.

Spieth has a slim chance at a birdie with the putt from deep in the green, but it overruns the pin.

Morikawa has bogeyed the sixth, so he’s up to +3.

Corey Connors is the latest to join the -2 group after birdieing the 16th.

11:12 , Chris Wilson

Daniel Brown, the leader from the beginning of the day, is teeing off on the first now. He goes with the driver and lands central on the fairway.

Can Lowry save par from the bunker on the fifth? He chips out and it’s within a kind putting distance...

Scheffler sinks a great putt for birdie and he joins the group on -2 now. Matthew Jordan has also made his way into that group.

Jordan Spieth remains on +1, with only three pars and a bogey so far today.

Woods birdies the sixth for +10 – a vintage putt from the American.

11:02 , Chris Wilson

We have a new leader as Lowry sinks an easy putt on the fourth! He tees off on the fifth but he finds the front greenside bunker.

Fitzpatrick misses the shot for par and settles for the bogey to take him back level. Colin Morikawa misses the birdie shot and stays on two over.

Scheffler gets to the green in regulation, but will he make that birdie? It’s a difficult one.

Brooks Koepka has double bogeyed, so he on to +1 now.

10:54 , Chris Wilson

Koepka’s ball is lying deep in the rough on the sixth and he chips it out, but he might struggle for par he (he’s currently on -1). He avoids the greenside bunker with the next shot, but he’s on for the bogey now.

Fitzpatrick’s approach shot on the fourth finds the first cut, but he should make par. Lowry’s is far better, landing within touching distance of the pin – we’ll have a new outright leader soon!

Schauffele tees off on the par-five sixth, and he finds the fairway with ease.

10:46 , Chris Wilson

Schauffele’s tee shot on the par-three fifth is taken right-to-left with the wind, and he’s not liking it. It’s a kind lie, having avoided the deep rough, and it’s a brilliant shot to clip it within tap-in distance for what will surely be a birdie.

Jordan Spieth moves down to +1 after a bogey, while Phil Mickelson birdied the seventh to move to +3.

We have another joining the group on -2, as Dean Burmester gets back-to-back birdies. Englishman Joe Dean is there too now, while Mackenzie Hughes has stayed there after making par on the first.

Woods chips out the bunker but he won’t make par here – he’ll be moving to +11 at least.

10:36 , Chris Wilson

Lowry comes close with the birdie attempt but he has to settle for par on the third. He remains tied for the lead on -6 with Daniel Brown, who tees off at 11:03.

Patrick Cantlay birdies the fourth and he’s back on level par.

Scheffler makes the green with his second shot on the third, but it’ll be hard to birdie from deep in the green.

Koepka skims the hole with his birdie attempt and will have to settle for par, while Schauffele also has to settle for par on the fifth,

10:28 , Chris Wilson

Scheffler’s second shot splits the pin and the greenside bunker, and the world number one is looking good here, but he misses the birdie shot and stays on -1.

Koepka chips onto the green on the fourth, but he won’t get up and down here.

Lowry makes the green in regulation on the third, and it’s landed kindly within birdie distance.

Matt Fitzpatrick misses the birdie shot on the third which would’ve taken him to -2.

10:17 , Chris Wilson

Spieth narrowly avoids moving into the red but he does make par on his first hole of the day.

Cam Young does manage to birdie that same hole, and he moves up to +1.

Scottie Scheffler narrowly avoids the fairway bunker with his tee shot on the second, while Xander Schauffele finds the rough with his tee shot on the par-five fourth.

Tiger Woods, who’s fallen to +10 now, drives well with his tee shot on the fourth.

10:14 , Luke Baker

The combustable 32-year-old is seldom afraid to speak his mind on courses, previously saying that Augusta doesn’t “suit my eye” ahead of The Masters.

Hatton believes that Troon, which has been lengthened by almost 200 yards since it last hosted The Open in 2016 , has been overly extended, reflecting a trend of making courses longer to combat the bigger hitting golfers of today.

“There’s a few holes that are just obviously playing really long,” Hatton said after the opening round at the Ayrshire links. “Unfortunately, that’s where it’s going at the moment, where they just seem to try to make it longer to make it harder, which I think doesn’t make it the most enjoyable test.”

10:02 , Luke Baker

That’s a bit of a surprise. Xander Schauffele misses a five-footer for par and drops a shot at the 2nd to fall to -1. Meanwhile, playing partner Patrick Cantlay makes birdie and climbs to +1.

World No 1 and tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler is up and running. He looks ominously poised at -1 heading into day two. He pipes his first drive down the fairway.

Up on the green, Shane Lowry starts with a birdie! His tee shot dribbled into the first cut of rough but he flicked a wedge from 109 yards and then rolled in nine-footer to join Daniel Brown atop the leaderboard at -6!

09:54 , Luke Baker

Brooks Koepka puts an opening-hole bogey behind him to birdie the 2nd and return to -1 for the championship. He’s joined on that score, just outside the top 10, by Canada’s Corey Conners (-1 for his round) and USA’s Billy Horschel (-2 for his round).

US PGA champion Xander Schauffele has also started his round and parred the 1st to stay at -2, while Shane Lowry’s opening tee shot find the right rough but he should be able to find the green from 109 yards with minimal fuss.

Marcel Siem charges up leaderboard in better conditions on day two of 152nd Open

09:45 , Luke Baker

Germany’s Marcel Siem took advantage of more favourable conditions on the second day of the 152nd Open as a five-birdie blitz saw him charge up the leaderboard.

Royal Troon’s front nine is traditionally where most of the scoring can be done but Thursday’s winds made that more difficult.

However, with an easing of the breeze there were more opportunities to be had and the 44-year-old, playing in his seventh championship, took full advantage in the first group out and that offered hope to big-name stars like Rory McIlroy looking to get their tournaments back on track after a tough first day.

The Open 2024: Marcel Siem’s hot start

09:15 , Luke Baker

Not a bad start to the morning for Marcel Siem, although he has just bogeyed the 11th to drop back to -1

The birdie run continues. Marcel Siem is 4-under par on his round and only 4 shots off the lead. pic.twitter.com/iCzJuTBI2M — The Open (@TheOpen) July 19, 2024

09:00 , Luke Baker

After his five early birdies, Marcel Siem gave a shot back at the 9th to fall to -2 but has since parred the 10th. He’s got the tougher back nine coming up now, so can he hold his position?

A couple of southern hemisphere stars also making early moves as Australian Jason Day and New Zealand’s Ryan Fox - who is the son of legendary All Blacks fly half Grant Fox - are both two-under for their round and evens for the championship.

08:28 , Luke Baker

The Marcel Siem express really is in full flow now. He’s just rolled in an eight-footer for birdie at the par-three 8th to move to five-under for his round and is now in a tie for third at -3 overall!

The Open 2024: Shane Lowry birdies the last to move to -5

08:20 , Luke Baker

Wow! Marcel Siem is showing no signs of slowing down. He leaves himself 68 yards with his third shot at the par-five 6th and gets up and down for his FOURTH birdie of the day! He’s now in a tie for fourth at -2 for the championship, having started the day on +2.

Here’s how he got the third of those four birdies so far

The Open 2024: Marcel Siem making moves

07:45 , Luke Baker

The afternoon wave of players got the best conditions yesterday (and pepper the top of the leaderboard) and will all go out in the morning today, again with the gentler conditions if the forecast is to be believed.

Germany’s Marcel Siem certainly seems to be suggesting that Troon can be got at today as he has gone on a tear to birdie three of the first four holes as part of the very first group out on the course. Siem has leapfrogged from +2 to -1 for the championship in the blink of an eye, just outside the top 10.

The Open 2024: Latest leaderboard

07:33 , Luke Baker

The first couple of players are out on the course and Canada’s Corey Conners has birdied the 1st to move to -1 for the championship. But here’s how the top of the leaderboard looks with each player’s round two tee-off time included

Daniel Brown (ENG) - 11.04am -6

Shane Lowry (IRE) - 9.47am -5

Justin Thomas (USA) - 12.53pm -3

Tiger Woods frustrated by tough day at Troon

06:58 , Lawrence Ostlere

Tiger Woods cut a frustrated figure as he laboured to an eight-over-par 79 in the first round of the Open at Royal Troon on Thursday.

The 15-time major winner rolled back the years when he holed a long putt for a birdie at the third but he fell away badly thereafter in a round that featured six bogeys and two doubles.

The 48-year-old’s efforts were also partly overshadowed by comments from TV commentator Mark Roe about his physical condition during his struggles on the Ayrshire links.

Woods’ difficulties since being involved in a serious car accident three years ago, as well as after numerous back and knee operations, have been well documented and he now plays a limited schedule.

Roe, a former European Tour professional, said on a ‘featured groups’ international TV feed overseen by organisers the R&A: “You look at the eyes, you’ve got to think there’s a lot of painkillers being taken to cope with the pain. It’s not easy.”

Woods was not asked about the matter as he took only four questions after his round, but has spoken about his problems previously, revealing at the 2023 Masters he felt “constant” pain in his right leg.

He has also admitted seeking professional help to manage medication issues in the past.

Justin Thomas heading in ‘right direction’ after impressive start to Open

A year after crashing out of the Open having made “bonehead mistakes”, Justin Thomas is a lot happier with his game after shooting a three-under 68 to take an early lead at Royal Troon .

Missing the cut by eight shots at Hoylake 12 months ago had the American worrying for his Ryder Cup place – although he would subsequently receive a captain’s pick – as he was struggling to find any form.

While things have picked up for him this year with five top-10 finishes, including eighth at last month’s US Open, he failed to make the weekend at the Masters or US PGA.

Paul McGinley believes Jon Rahm is ‘hoping for a deal’ between PGA Tour and LIV

Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley believes an unhappy Jon Rahm is hoping for a deal between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour to revive his game.

Rahm has finished in the top 10 of all nine LIV events he has played since his shock move to the Saudi-funded breakaway, but his performances in this year’s majors have been hugely disappointing.

The Ryder Cup star was 45th in the defence of his Masters title and missed the cut in the US PGA Championship before being forced to withdraw from the US Open – which he won in 2021 – due to a toe injury.

Matt Wallace cards first eagle of the 152nd Open to share lead early on day one

06:25 , Mike Jones

England’s Matt Wallace carded the first eagle of the 152nd Open Championship to catapult himself into a share of the lead at Royal Troon on a testing first morning of unfamiliar winds and intermittent showers.

The 34-year-old had to come through final qualifying last year only to miss the cut at Hoylake but had no such worries this summer after finishing 20th on the DP World Tour rankings.

He had a brilliant start as, after a birdie at the second, he holed out from the semi-rough at the 612-yard fourth to leap to three under and into a share of the lead with American two-time major winner Justin Thomas , who himself missed the cut last year, after he birdied seven and eight.

Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau at wrong end of Open leaderboard on day one

06:15 , Mike Jones

US Open rivals Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau found themselves together at the wrong end of the leaderboard on day one of the 152nd Open.

A month after McIlroy’s nightmare finish at Pinehurst helped DeChambeau claim a second US Open title, the pair were facing an uphill battle simply to make the cut in the year’s final major at Royal Troon .

McIlroy was level par after seven holes of his opening round before running up a double bogey on the signature par-three eighth, the Northern Irishman’s first attempt to escape a bunker on the Postage Stamp coming back to his feet.

Tiger Woods will play alongside Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele as the 15-time major champion makes his return to The Open . Woods missed last year’s event due to ankle surgery but is set to compete at Royal Troon in a field numbering 158 golfers.

Rory McIlroy has been grouped with Tyrrell Hatton and Max Homa as he once more seeks a long-awaited return to winning ways at a major, while Brian Harman will begin the defence of his Open crown with Viktor Hovland and Sahith Theegala for company.

Scottie Scheffler features in an all-American three-ball with Jordan Spieth and Cameron Young. Here are the tee times for round two at the Ayrshire course:

Rory McIlroy way off Open lead after not adapting well enough to conditions

Thursday 18 July 2024 17:42 , Mike Jones

A downbeat Rory McIlroy effectively dismissed his chances of mounting a challenge for the 152nd Open after struggling to an opening 78 at Royal Troon.

McIlroy was level par after seven holes before running up a double bogey on the signature par-three eighth, the Northern Irishman’s first attempt to escape a bunker on the Postage Stamp coming back to his feet.

With the back nine playing downwind McIlroy was hopeful of repairing the damage, only to drive out of bounds on the 11th to run up another double bogey and eventually finish seven over par, 10 shots behind clubhouse leader Justin Thomas .

How Spain beat England to win Euro 2024 thanks to Mikel Oyarzabal's late winning goal

european tour live scores

Spain win Euro 2024

England ’s long wait for a first major men’s trophy since 1966 goes on after substitute Mikel Oyarzabal struck at the death to win the 2024 European Championship for Spain.

After a tense opening half the excellent Nico Williams gave Spain the lead seconds after the half-time interval, only for Cole Palmer to level the score with a fine strike from range.

But Spain, the better team throughout, won the title when Mikel Oyarzabal slid home Marc Cucurella ’s cross with just minutes of the game remaining.

It is the second successive European Championship final defeat England have suffered and the fourth time Spain have lifted the Henri Delaunay Cup.

Kane struggled again for England

Kane struggled again for England

Harry Kane has had moments this tournament — the winner versus Slovakia, his nerveless penalty against the Netherlands.

But this has not been a competition where he has been at his all-court best.

In the final, his movement was as laboured as it has been throughout the tournament, with Spain’s centre-backs able to press up aggressively and not worried about the run in behind.

On an early yellow card and struggling to find team-mates with his hold-up play, there were reasons for England manager Southgate to make an early change.

The battle between Shaw and Yamal

The battle between Shaw and Yamal

It was a big call for Gareth Southgate to name Luke Shaw in the starting XI for the first time this summer.

Shaw had the small task of looking after the most electric player in European football, Yamine Lamal, who has lit up the competition with his creative threat and thunderous striking ability.

There was a case to be made that Kieran Trippier might have (finally) been a better option on the night, with Yamal likely to drift infield onto Trippier’s stronger right foot.

But Shaw started excellently as he largely kept the teenager quiet in the first half.

However, Yamal doesn’t need many opportunities to punish you…

Rodri injury did not derail Spain

Rodri injury did not derail Spain

Rodri got through a phenomenal amount of work in the first 45 minutes, being influential as usual from his position holding the Spain midfield.

However, close to half-time he threw himself to get in the way of a Harry Kane effort from the edge of the box. The stretch led to a pulled hamstring.

On came the much less experienced but highly rated Martin Zubimendi…

Freescoring Spain were deserved tournament winners

Freescoring Spain were deserved tournament winners

Williams’ opening goal was Spain’s 14th in the tournament, more than La Roja had ever scored at a European Championship or World Cup, and equaling France 1984 for the high-scorers in Euros history.

Nobody had ever scored 15 goals at a European Championship until Luis de la Fuente’s young, exciting and ambitious Spain team came along — and their attacking approach paid off with the trophy.

Bellingham switched off for first goal

Bellingham switched off for first goal

Major tournament finals are for heroes and villains. Jude Bellingham has so often been the former for England, but he did not pick up Dani Carvajal or Lamine Yamal for the opener.

Bellingham let Carvajal advance and called for a defender to step up and mark Yamal. Bellingham was caught not marking either full-back or winger.

In true Bellingham fashion, he then atoned completely.

Who is Oyarzabal, Spain’s unlikely hero?

One of the first decisions Luis de la Fuente made on taking over as Spain coach was to make Mikel Oyarzabal one of his vice-captains, breaking with tradition to add a younger and less-capped player to the squad’s leadership group.

That was because De la Fuente valued so highly his fellow Basque’s influence on and off the pitch.

Oyarzabal has always been a versatile and intelligent attacker, but never a truly prolific goalscorer. De la Fuente also knew him, and rated him, as a key member of the Under-21 team he coached to European success in 2019.

And he also has a knack of scoring important goals in big games.

Super six cannot be separated

Super six cannot be separated

One rather unsatisfactory conclusion tonight was to the Euro 2024 top scorer standings, with the award being handed out to six players.

Slovakia’s Ivan Schranz, Georges Mikautadze of Georgia, Germany forward Jamal Musiala and Netherlands’ Cody Gakpo were all tied on three goals ahead of the final.

So too were Harry Kane and Dani Olmo, although they at least had the best opportunity to win it outright in the final.

Alas, they were not among the scorers in Berlin and now UEFA is going to need to find six trophies for the price of one tournament.

Also, three goals doesn’t feel a lot either — but let’s not dilute the achievement further.

Gareth Southgate: ‘England are in a good position’

Gareth Southgate: ‘England are in a good position’

Speaking on ITV a disconsolate Gareth Southgate said England “are in a good position” to compete at the 2026 World Cup:

💬 “I don’t think now is a good time to make a decision like that. I’m going to talk to the right people and, yeah, it’s just not for now.

“I think England are in a really good position in terms of the experiences they’ve got now, the age of the squad. Most of this squad are going to be around not just for the World Cup but the next Euros as well.

“There’s a lot to look forward to but at this moment that’s not any consolation.”

The longest wait continues for England

The longest wait continues for England

As for the narrative of England’s men waiting for a major honour to follow their 1966 World Cup success at Wembley, there has been some progress with this being their first major final on foreign soil.

However, their defeat in today’s final in Berlin came in their 45th European Championship finals game.

That is 19 more matches than any other nation to have never won the tournament. Closest to them are Belgium, after 26 matches.

If football really is coming home, it’s definitely taking the scenic route.

How Harry came up short on Jack

How Harry came up short on Jack

The stats for England are not as joyous, as you would expect — to the point that Jack Grealish gets a mention.

Harry Kane had just ONE touch in the opposition box across the Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 finals, against Italy and Spain respectively.

That’s bad obviously — but it is also ONE fewer than Jack Grealish managed.

That’s Jack Grealish, who played just 21 minutes in the 2020 final and didn’t even make the squad for Euro 2024.

You can’t argue with Spain’s pedigree — and it showed tonight in Berlin.

Free-scoring and history makers

Free-scoring and history makers

The Athletic

So Spain now have a record four European Championship titles — 1964, 2008, 2012 and 2024.

Having won all four of their seven matches at Euro 2024, they have also become only the second team in Euros history to win the trophy with a 100 per cent win rate since the introduction of the group stage in 1980

France in 1984 was the previous occasion, when they won five from five.

And finally, they also beat the record for most goals scored by a team in a tournament, with 15.

You can see what the shot map of history looks like above.

Full time stats zone

It felt cagey in the first half but by the end, it felt like Spain did more than enough to seal the deal — as the score line proved. My friends, the numbers, clearly agreed by full time too as you can see for yourself…

FT: Spain 2-1 England

  • Possession: 65% — 35%
  • Shots: 16 — 9
  • On target: 6 — 4
  • XG: 1.77 — 0.55
  • Big chances: 5 — 2
  • Blocked shots: 5 — 3
  • Duels won: 35 — 43
  • Dispossessed: 10 — 6

And that is why not having the ball can be fine, but you have to be so good with it in the short spells you do have it. Spain have the ball, created the volume and quality of chances and ultimately, did the business. Here’s to Euro 2024’s worthy champions.

Rodri on top of the continent

Rodri on top of the continent

Rodri is approaching serial winner territory now. After numerous successes with Manchester City, the Spain midfielder is now a significant part of European Championship history.

Here he is, talking to ITV Sport :

💬 “It’s unbelievable. This is a dream. The best national team in the Euros is crazy. But this talks about how humble we have been to keep working, never lose faith. And this tournament… Come on. We beat four (past) World Cup champions. I mean, how tough was that?!

“I know (Cole Palmer is a huge star and going to be the top player in the next year. He put it in the corner and in that moment, we suffered.

“But this tournament, we saw something different — that we could overcome this situation.

“We’re so happy about what happened. We made history but this doesn’t stop here.”

De la Fuente has high hopes this is just the start

De la Fuente has high hopes this is just the start

For all England’s misery, what a joyous occasion for Spain as they return to the top of European football — and what a job Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has done in getting them back there. Here he is speaking to La 1 :

💬 “You cannot be happier than this, to see the fans, the players… Cannot be happier. It was a marvellous day, an authentic team. I am even prouder of them now.

“We wanted to reinforce who we are, keep doing what we do. We knew the game would open up.

“We can always improve. We always felt we could do more. Now we will try and win the next competition too. And we will do it, as these players are an example for everyone. They are very good.”

Kane did not reach the ‘hoped-for’ level

Kane did not reach the ‘hoped-for’ level

Gareth Southgate cut a devastated figure off the back of that final defeat, as you’d expect. He ensured everyone knew he felt Spain were the best team in the tournament — but after that, he addressed some of England issues with BBC Sport :

💬 “There is definitely a disadvantage to having a day less to prepare. But we were still in it come 80 minutes. It is going to take a while to pick the bones out of it really.

“Physically it has been tough for (Harry Kane). He came into the tournament short on games and has not quite reached the level we all would have hoped.

“The games are hugely demanding and we thought Ollie’s (Watkins) freshness would allow us to press better and offer a press in behind. I thought the substitutes came on and did what we asked them to do.”

Alvaro Morata and Spain lift the Euro 2024 trophy

Mikel Oyarzabal has stunned England with a late goal after coming on as a second-half substitute, allowing Spain to become the first nation to win the European Championships four times.

Spain backed up their pre-match favouritism with a brilliant performance to condemn England to a second-straight defeat in a European Championships final.

A cagey first half saw neither side establish genuine dominance, but Spain came out firing to open the second 45, scoring inside two minutes of the resumption through Nico Williams.

England had come from behind in all of its knockout matches at this tournament so far, and continued that trend when substitute Cole Palmer stroked home a sublime equaliser with little over 15 minutes remaining.

Spain though, continued to press and found the winner thanks to a wonderfully timed run from Oyarzabal, who slid home to break English hearts once again.

"I think Spain were the best team in the tournament," England boss Gareth Southgate said.

"We didn't keep the ball well enough.

"Spain press well and you have to keep the ball when you win it back. In the end, that's the bit that takes more out of your legs."

Much of the talk pre-match had rightly been about the excitement that Spain had brought to the tournament.

And they backed that up with another tremendous display against an England team that fought hard but ultimately did not quite have what it took to get one up over their rivals.

That being said, England was able to successfully shut down Spain's attacking threats in a first half of few, if any, clear-cut chances.

One of those chances saw the premature departure of player of the tournament Rodri, who was forced off at half-time after blocking a Harry Kane shot.

If that disruption was detrimental to Spain's flow, they didn't show it, coming out after the break with renewed attacking vigour.

Nico Williams celebrates a goal against England

Williams finished superbly, racing onto a pass at the end of a flowing attacking move to put the three-time champions ahead.

Spain could have had a second moments later as Williams again appeared in space, but Dani Olmo fluffed his effort wide.

While Williams threatened down the left, Álvaro Morata was asking questions centrally, with Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal also getting more and more into the game, forcing two stunning saves from Jordan Pickford.

England made a change, removing Kane on the hour mark, and instantly improved — Jude Bellingham shooting just wide after a stunning turn on the edge of the area.

It was a second switch from Southgate that really made the difference though, as Cole Palmer stroked home after being teed up by Bellingham from Saka's cross.

Cole Palmer and Luke Shaw celebrate a goal

England believed again — it was the fourth time in as many knockout games that England had come from behind — and they were roared on by their multitude of supporters in the stands.

However, it was a Spanish counterattack that brought the winner.

Substitute Oyarzabal timed his run to perfection, latching onto a Marc Cucurella cross to poke past Pickford and send the Spanish supporters wild.

There was still time for England, who had two headers — first by John Stones, then Marc Guéhi — cleared off the line by Unai Simón and Dani Olmo, respectively.

Mikel Oyarzabal celebrates a goal against England

But after that, time simply ran out for England, who were made to watch as Spain joyfully celebrated the triumph.

"I'm devastated for everyone. We have just fallen a little short," Southgate said.

"We had a little bit of momentum in the game at that point [when Cole Palmer equalised]. There's a big chance at the end to equalise too but across the 90 minutes, I'm not sure we did enough.

"I think the players will take enormous credit for getting us to where we did but when you're as close as that, you have to take your chances.

"They have represented the shirt with pride and haven't been beaten until the very end. I just think tonight Spain had more control of the game."

Farewell from us

european tour live scores

Well, what a dramatic final.

A huge performance from Spain, who were utterly deserving of their fourth title, not only based on their performance in this final, but in the tournament as a whole.

England though suffer the heartache and pain of losing in the final, again.

Third time lucky on home soil in 2028?

That's a long time away for the supporters and players.

And, it's been a long time since full time so we'll wrap things up here.

Thank you so much for joining me this morning.

There will be more fallout and wash up from the defeat over the coming days and weeks.

But from us, right here, right now, it's time to go.

England coach Gareth Southgate has been asked by ITV in the UK whether he will stay on as England manager.

"I don’t think now is a good time to make a decision like that," he says.

"I need to talk to the right people. It’s not for now."

He also spoke to our friends on the BBC, saying that there can be no excuses.

"There is definitely a disadvantage to having a day less to prepare but we were still in it come 80 minutes," Southgate says.

Southgate also said the tournament had been "tough"on Harry Kane.

"All those who have participated in sporting activities at any level will know how utterly despairing such a result can feel when the prize was so near - and will join me in sending heartfelt sympathy, even as we congratulate Spain.

Harry Kane has been speaking on UK's ITV.

"It's hard to put into words how we're all feeling right now," he said.

"Tough game. We did well to get back into the game and struggled to build on that. To concede late on is really tough to take.

"We've been coming from behind all tournament, we've got it in the locker. We didn't take the next step and win it.

"In the first half, we struggled. We couldn't keep the ball. Second half was better and we got the goal. We got caught with a cross and that's the final.

"It's an opportunity missed. These finals aren't easy to get to. You have to take it when it comes and we haven't done it again.

european tour live scores

Oof. Football, hey?

Rodri is player of the tournament

His teammates bow as he walks through their self-made tunnel on his way to the stage.

A worthy winner and the lynchpin of this Spanish side.

Losing him at half time could have been a terminal blow to Spain.

That it wasn't was a testament to the stunning all round squad.

Lamine Yamal is young player of the tournament

No surprises there.

european tour live scores

The 17-year-old Lamine Yamal is the young player of the tournament - and he beams as he accepts his award.

Giorgio Chiellini brings the trophy to the stage

The Italian who broke England's hearts three years ago, now inadvertently assists in breaking their hearts once more.

Southgate's record

european tour live scores

There will be plenty of time for retrospection.

Plenty of time for recriminations to be laid, if any are warranted.

But Gareth Southgate can hold up his head.

Consecutive European Championship finals, a World Cup semifinal and a quarterfinal - that's some record.

european tour live scores

He has made a rare impact, achieving on the pitch without ultimately achieving anything in terms of silverware, but changing the entire outlook England has had on its national team.

From overhyped primadonnas to genuinely likable contenders for major championships.

That will take some following, if he is to depart.

Bellingham kicks out

european tour live scores

Frustration for one of the best players in Spain's best team, Jude Bellingham.

The Real Madrid youngster walks over to the bench and kicks over a cooler of drinks.

Heartbreak for him in the white of England after such joy earlier in the summer in the blanco of Madrid.

More England beartbreak

european tour live scores

The default setting for England fans in major tournaments returns.

The late surge of brilliance during this German jaunt was just not enough for England to overcome a tremendous Spain side.

european tour live scores

The English are now the first men's team to lose two European finals in a row.

Gareth Southgate suffers more agony in what might just end up being his final match as England boss.
