My team has traveled three times with Quest and had wonderful experiences on all trips. Our latest tour to Costa Rica was beneficial basketball wise, but even more so from a chemistry point of view. I truly believe the bonds created while rafting, zip lining and exploring the beautiful country were a big factor in our run to a Final Four. I would highly recommend an International Tour with Quest Sports Travel to any coach looking to bring that extra something to their program

14 Milwaukee-area winter sports teams bumped up a division by WIAA performance factor

tours basket division

STEVENS POINT - The WIAA released a list of 37 boys and girls winter athletics programs that will compete a division level higher next season after meeting thresholds of success established by the Wisconsin high school sports governing body's tournament performance factor.

The list includes nine boys basketball programs, nine girls basketball programs, nine gymnastics programs, five boys hockey programs and five wrestling programs. Each of these teams met a threshold of success over the past three seasons that qualified them for promotion to the next division.

Locally, 14 area programs were among the list of 37 that met the threshold to compete in a higher division effective next season.

In boys basketball, Arrowhead, Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic, Pewaukee, St. Thomas More and Wisconsin Lutheran were among a list that also included Brillion, De Pere, Neenah and West Salem statewide.

Arrowhead already competes in Division 1 for boys basketball, but the tournament performance factor negates any drop in division that may occur based on declining enrollment. Barring enrollment changes, Pewaukee and Wisconsin Lutheran will compete in D1 next year, Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic will move from D4 to D3, and St. Thomas More will compete in D2.

Arrowhead, Brookfield East, Kettle Moraine and Pewaukee were among the nine girls basketball teams meeting the threshold of the tournament performance factor, a list that also included Albany/Monticello, Laconia, McDonnell Catholic, Notre Dame and Waupun. Pewaukee will join the other three local teams in D1 next season.

More: 6 Milwaukee-area high school fall teams will be reclassified due to recent performance in WIAA tournaments

The recent successes of the Elkhorn, Franklin/Muskego, Homestead, Nicolet and Whitefish Bay gymnastics teams also met or exceed the performance threshold, joining a list that also included Medford/Colby, Mount Horeb, Verona/Edgewood and West Salem/Aquinas/Bangor. Elkhorn, Nicolet and Whitefish Bay will move from D2 to D1, while Franklin/Muskego and Homestead will remain in D1.

Boys hockey; team wrestling

In boys hockey, statewide programs including Edgewood, Hudson, New Richmond, Notre Dame and St. Mary's Springs met the threshold to be elevated or stay in D1. In team wrestling, Coleman, Fennimore, Kaukuana, Luxemburg-Casco and Prairie du Chien also were listed among the 37 programs impacted.

The appeal process

The competitive balance plan also allows for programs to appeal promotions in division. The WIAA reported 12 such requests, with one being approved. None of the 12 were named in the association's release.

Schools are also afforded the opportunity to request to be moved down in division based on enrollment. A classification committee reviewed 15 requests from winter sports programs, with three being approved in girls basketball, two in boys basketball and two in boys hockey. Five programs also requested and were approved to be elevated to higher enrollment divisions than they competed in this past season, including three boys hockey teams, one boys basketball team and one girls basketball team.

The WIAA will release final tournament series assignments for the 2024-25 winter sports season later this spring.

How the tournament performance factor works

The tournament performance factor stems from a proposal of an ad hoc committee consisting of 11 superintendents/district administrators, six athletic directors, one principal and one principal/athletic director. That proposal was approved by a 265-115 membership vote at the 2023 annual meeting last April, and implemented beginning this school year.

The competitive balance plan assigns points based on WIAA state tournament finishes, awarding between one and four points for the round a program reaches between the sectional and state levels. The points awarded vary based on the sport, but the tournament performance factor has been enacted for all WIAA sports except track & field, swimming & diving and sports with only one division of competition.

Teams meeting or exceeding a threshold of six points over the three previous seasons are candidates for reclassification.

Division I Council approves changes to transfer rules

Student-athletes who meet progress-toward-degree requirements to be immediately eligible at new school.

The Division I Council on Wednesday unanimously adopted a package of rules changes to allow transferring student-athletes who meet certain academic eligibility requirements to be immediately eligible at their new school, regardless of whether they transferred previously. The council's action is not final until the meeting concludes Thursday and is subject to ratification by the Division I Board of Directors at its meeting later this month. If ratified, the rules would be effective immediately.

Specifically, to be immediately eligible after a transfer, undergraduate student-athletes would have to have left their previous school while academically eligible and in good standing (not subject to disciplinary suspension or dismissal) and meet progress-toward-degree requirements at their new school before competing. For graduate transfer student-athletes to be eligible, they would have to earn a degree from their previous school, leave while academically eligible and be enrolled as a full-time postgraduate student while continuing to satisfy minimum academic standards.

"With these rule changes, NCAA members continue to prioritize long-term academic success for college athletes who transfer, while supporting their opportunity to compete immediately," said Lynda Tealer, deputy athletics director at Florida and chair of the council. "We hope that this practical approach to transfer eligibility requirements will encourage student-athletes to make well-informed decisions about transferring and the impacts such a move could have on their ability to graduate on time in their degree of choice, particularly as it relates to transferable credits."

Moving forward, student-athletes are expected to enter the Transfer Portal within their sport's notification-of-transfer windows, which Division I members emphasized are important for providing transparency to student-athletes and coaches for recruitment opportunities, roster management and financial aid planning. There will continue to be exceptions to the legislated transfer windows, including for the departure of a head coach or a discontinued sport. Student-athletes who plan to enroll as graduate students at their next school can enter the portal at any time during the academic year but must enter the portal prior to the conclusion of their respective sports' final transfer windows.

In addition to reviewing the council actions during its meeting next week, the Division I board will consider directing the Committee on Academics to examine criteria for academic waivers and consider the creation of a Transfer Academic Progress Rate, which would give real-time information about the academic health of a school's four-year undergraduate transfer student-athletes.

The board also will consider charging the Committee on Academics to study the creation of a Graduation Passport, which would specifically track academic progress and will provide a measure of graduation outcomes for student-athletes who transfer. This resource would be the first metric of its kind to specifically track graduation for students who transfer. Currently, the federal graduation rate does not count transfers as graduates, and the NCAA's graduation success rate generally assumes outcomes based on the academic status at the time of a student-athlete's departure.

Colorado basketball lands Trevor Baskin from in-state Division II

tours basket division

Tad Boyle and Colorado basketball landed the team's first addition from the transfer portal since season's end on Thursday.

Trevor Baskin committed to the Buffaloes after averaging 18.5 points (39% from deep), 8.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game last season for Division II Colorado Mesa. The 6-foot-9 forward, who is an Arvada (Pomona High School) native, chose Colorado over Colorado State.

It's a significant get for the Buffs, who will have a completely different look in 2024-25.

Eddie Lampkin Jr. (Syracuse), J'Vonne Hadley (Louisville) and Luke O'Brien have already hit the transfer portal, while senior Tristan da Silva is off to the NBA as a  projected first-round pick . Junior guard KJ Simpson announced his intention to enter the 2024 NBA Draft just last week and star freshman Cody Williams is expected to do the same any day now.

They accounted for Colorado's top six rotation players from last season. That sets Baskin up to not only be a starter for Boyle's Buffs next season, but a leading contributor.

Colorado's group of returning underclassmen includes Julian Hammond III, Javon Ruffin, RJ Smith, Courtney Anderson, Bangot Dak and Assane Diop. Baskin's addition and the 2024 signees — Andrew Crawford, Felix Kossaras, and Sebastian Rancik — leaves the Buffs with two open scholarships. That number increases to three if Williams decide to test the NBA waters.

After winning a program-record 26 games and back-to-back contests in the NCAA Tournament last season, Colorado heads into the Big 12 with Baskin in tow.

Gannon standout Josh Omojafo realizes Division I basketball dream. Where is he headed?

tours basket division

Gannon All-American Josh Omojafo didn't have to go far to find his Division I destination.

Omojafo announced on social media Tuesday that he is transferring to Robert Morris in Moon Township, near Pittsburgh.

Omojafo posted on X “Committed!! Thanks to Coach Toole and staff for making this possible.” The Portal Report was first to report the transfer.

The sophomore from Hamilton, Ontario , led Gannon with a scoring average of 20 points per game this past season and had 53 steals, 49 assists and 98 rebounds in 35 games. He played a big part in Gannon's rebound from three wins to 32, the greatest turnaround in NCAA history.

Omojafo has two years left of eligibility and will play for his third coach in three years. He was recruited by Kelvin Jefferson and played for him as a freshman before playing for Jordan Fee this past season. Omojafo will now play for Andrew Toole.

There is a chance Omojafo could play Mercyhurst in the next two years as Robert Morris played two Northeast Conference teams this past winter, including a 97-86 win over Farleigh Dickinson and a 75-73 win at Saint Francis.

Roster turnover

Omojafo is one of seven players to enter the portal from Gannon this offseason along with Thomas Whitley, Cathedral Prep graduate Michael Lucarotti, Berkay Yilmaz, Derrick Anderson, Derrick James and Cenker Evran.

Gannon has also received commitments from four players and has signed three. The Golden Knights have signed Pace Prosser, a 6-foot 1-inch point guard at Berlin-Brothersvalley, a District 5 powerhouse; Rocco Morabito, a 6-3 shooting guard at Archbishop Ryan out of Philadelphia ; and Quinn Barnett, a 6-2 point guard at Brunswick High School in Ohio.

Gannon also has commitments from high school seniors Mason Kemp and Lucas Sekasi. Kemp is a 6-7 forward from Shawnee, Kansas, and Sekasi is a 6-6 point guard from Washington D.C.

The Golden Knights also have commitments from transfers Layne Sarver and Justin Debuck from Union University in Tennessee. Debuck is a 6-1 junior point guard and Sarver is a 6-6 sophomore shooting guard.

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are selected in the first round of the WNBA draft

Women's college basketball phenoms Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have been selected in the first round of the WNBA draft.

Clark, a guard at the University of Iowa, was the number one pick by the Indiana Fever. Reese, a forward at Louisiana State University, was selected number seven by the Chicago Sky.

"INDIANA LETS GOOOOO!!!!" Clark posted on X, formerly Twitter.

INDIANA LETS GOOOOO!!!! @IndianaFever — Caitlin Clark (@CaitlinClark22) April 16, 2024

In a video posted to Instagram, Reese said, "I'm coming to Chitown. I'm super excited to compete, work hard and let's win."

Reese also posted a photo with her new teammate Kamilla Cardoso, who helped snag a championship for South Carolina this year and was selected third by the Chicago Sky in the first round.

Clark averaged 28.4 points and 8.2 assists over her college career, leading the NCAA in both categories for two years in a row and becoming the all-time leading scorer in college basketball history. Reese averaged 18.6 points and 12.3 rebounds over her college career, and led the SEC division in both categories for two seasons.

Clark, a senior, said in February she would be leaving school to declare for the draft, while Reese, a junior, made a similar announcement earlier this month in a cover story for Vogue magazine.

Can female athletes like college basketball's Caitlin Clark get paid on par with men?

Iowa and LSU developed a rivalry after facing off in last year's championship, in which there was controversy about the sportsmanship between both teams. LSU defeated Iowa then, while Iowa beat LSU this year during their Elite Eight rematch. Iowa made it to the championship again this year, but lost to South Carolina.

Colorado men's basketball lands first transfer portal commit of the offseason, share this article.

After losing several big names soon after the season concluded, Colorado men’s basketball head coach Tad Boyle inked his first transfer portal pickup of the offseason on Thursday.

Heading to Boulder is Trevor Baskin, a 6-foot-9 forward who spent his last four seasons at in-state Division II Colorado Mesa. Baskin was named the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a redshirt junior, posting 18.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.

Baskin attended Pomona High School in Arvada and Colorado Mesa was the only college to offer him a scholarship spot. After hitting the transfer portal this spring following four successful years in Grand Junction, he was quickly sought after by Division I programs.

However, the Colorado native wanted to return to the Front Range, narrowing his top choices to Colorado and Colorado State. Despite the Rams nabbing 2022-23 RMAC Player of the Year Joel Scott last offseason, the Buffs won this year’s transfer portal battle.

Badgers in the NHL: Nine UW alums gear up for Stanley Cup playoffs

2024 stanley cup playoffs begin on saturday, april 20.

MADISON, Wis. – Nine former Badgers across seven different teams are set to begin their quest for the Stanley Cup in the 2024 NHL playoffs. Among NCAA schools, UW's nine skaters are tied for the third most to start the playoffs.  All time, 14 Badgers have their names etched on the Stanley Cup as winning players a total of an NCAA-best 22 times. The Badgers boast players on the top-seeded team from each conference with one player on the Eastern Conference's New York Rangers and three on the West's Dallas Stars. Defenseman K'Andre Miller and the New York Rangers head into the playoffs as the top overall seed, finishing the season with 114 points and earning the President's Trophy, given out annually to the NHL team with the best record in the regular season. Miller earned eight goals and 30 points in 80 games played during the regular season and he currently owns eight points in 27 playoff games played from 2021 to 2023.
