My wife and I spent in Kerala one of the best time of our life. It was truly wonderful and customised holidays without unnecessary rush with plent of time for taking photos and local life observation. The itinerary was varied and very interesting full of different attractions like an exciting martial art show or theatre in Kochin. We had a great driver Sunil who showed us southern part of India in the best possible way. We love the food especially fish thali and some of the street food snacks. I had a great time in Kerala. I loved the scenery, the culture, and most of all, the people. Our driver, Mr. Sibu, was terrific. I'd love to come back to Kerala and have him as my driver again. The guides in Kochi and Munnar were also great—they were knowledgeable and flexible. We weren't too happy with the initial boat we were given for our Backwater tour, but the company quickly changed us to another boat, which was great. The hotels were all good and the staff were very helpful. All in all, it was a wonderful experience.

The tour started in Cochin, also known as the 'Queen of the Arabian Sea'. We were greeted by our friendly tour guide at the airport who gave us a warm welcome and briefed us about the itinerary for the next 8 days. We were then taken to our hotel in Cochin, which was located in a prime location with easy access to the popular tourist spots. The next day, we visited the famous Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace, which was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The intricate architecture and beautiful murals inside the palace were a treat to the eyes. We also visited the Jewish Synagogue, the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations. Next, we headed to Munnar, a picturesque hill station famous for its tea plantations. The scenic drive to Munnar was breathtaking, with stunning views of the Western Ghats. We visited the Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point, and the Tea Museum where we learned about the process of tea-making and got to taste different varieties of tea. Thekkady was our next stop, where we went for a thrilling jungle safari in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. We were lucky enough to spot elephants, deer, and various species of birds. Thekkady is also famous for its spice plantations, and we got to see how different spices are grown and processed. Alleppey, also known as the 'Venice of the East', was one of the highlights of the tour. We stayed in a houseboat and cruised along the backwaters, enjoying the serene surroundings and delicious local food. It was a unique experience that I will never forget. The tour ended in Kovalam, a beautiful beach town famous for its white sandy beaches and clear blue waters. We spent our days relaxing on the beach and indulging in various water sports activities. The dish is basically made of rice flour, water and salt. Then numerous strands of vermicelli are entwined together to make this version of an Appam.

4. Nadan Kozhi Varuthathu (Spicy Chicken Fry)

Chicken Fry is a must. This version of a chicken fry is something that is served on a banana leaf, the chicken is fried with onion, garlic, chilli, vinegar and coriander. The fiery taste adds to its taste.

5. Kerala Prawns Curry

Missing out on the Prawns Curry in Kerala is criminal. The prawn curry is sprinkled with chilli, salt, pepper and then dipped in lots of coconut milk, jaggery and then finished with curry leaves.

Excellent Tour Company TMI/Manvendra were very responsive to our short notice request for an 8 night stay in Kerela. Unfortunately some important details were missed. One hotel was booked 50 minutes away from our destination, which was very difficult after already traveling 5 hours in the car with a baby. Our driver had excellent driving skills but poor English and customer service, which caused frustration. Be sure to specify rooms at hotels when confirming itineraries, otherwise its likely you'll get the lowest standard room option.

Day 1 : Cochin - Munnar (160 Kms. 03 ½ Hrs.)

After your arrival at Cochin Airport, our tour agent will greet and transfer you to Munnar, the gateway of hills in South India. On the way, visit the Cheeyappara Waterfalls and watch the lovely and bright blooms in blossom Garden. Later, go back to hotel, take rest for some time and investigate the magnificence of the nature. Move back to the hotel in Munnar for overnight stay.

Day 2 : Munnar

After breakfast, get ready for a morning touring trek to Munnar which incorporates, Mattupetty Dam, Eravikulam National Park, Echo Point, Kundala Dam, View Point and the Tea Gardens. Get back to the hotel for overnight stay in Munnar.

Day 3 : Munnar - Thekkady (110 Kms - 03 Hrs)

Take your breakfast and check-out from the inn. Move ahead to Thekkady. Get into the hotel and relax for sometime. After a short break, proceed for Thekkady tour which incorporates, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Hill Station and Spice Plantation. Trekking, Bamboo Rafting and Elephant Ride. Kerala's first private train service from June 4: Details

Kozhikode: The first ever private train service from Kerala will start on June 4 from Thiruvananthapuram. The service intended for the tourists will be operated by SRMPR Global Railways Private Limited in association with Princy World Travels Private Limited, as part of the Indian Railways' Bharat Gaurav Yatra project. "Under this private partnership in collaboration with Indian Railways', the SRMPR has hired a train from the Railways to run tourist services from Kerala. The train, staff and other facilities will be provided by the SRMPR while services like ticketing and marketing are being done by Princy Travels,'' said Devika Menon, Director of Princy World Travels. 

The train will conduct services to Mumbai, Goa and Ayodhya. The first trip is to Goa. The pre-booked passengers can board the train from stations like Trivandrum, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargode. The train, which can carry up to 750 passengers at a time, includes  2 sleeper class bogies, 11 third class AC coaches and 2 second class AC coaches. 60 staff, including medical experts, also will be on duty. Food, wi-fi facility, and a GPS tracking system will be provided. Star hotel accommodation, food and sightseeing will be part of the tour package. 

For a 4-day Goa trip in the non-AC sleeper, a traveller has to pay Rs. 13,999. If it is 3 tier AC the amount is Rs 15,150 and for 2 tier AC, the amount is Rs 16,400.   For the Mumbai trip, the amount is Rs 15,050, Rs 16,920 and Rs 18,825 respectively. For 8 day Ayodhya trip the rate is -  Rs 30,550, Rs 33,850 and Rs 37,150. The trip covers temples and pilgrimage destinations in Ayodhya, Varanasi and Prayagraj. Kids under 10 years, The tickets are free for children upto five years. For children between five and ten years, half the price of an adult's ticket will have to be paid.

Now, book a private train from Kerala

KOCHI: In a first, private trains will be available for tourists from Kerala to destinations such as Goa, Mumbai and Ayodhya. To begin with, the private train journey from the state to Goa will begin next month.

The facility is being launched by SRMPR Global Railways, a Chennai-based tour operator, in partnership with the Kochi-based Princy World Travel Limited.

An individual or a group of 600 passengers can book a private train journey to the three prominent destinations from Kerala, said officials.

The inaugural journey is set to depart from Thiruvananthapuram on June 4 to Madgaon in Goa. The four-day tour package is available in three categories: 2-tier AC at Rs 16,400 per person, 3-tier AC at Rs 15,150 per person and non-AC sleeper at Rs 13,999. The package includes stay, food and sightseeing. Services like off-board travel and excursions by buses, stay at hotels, tour guides, meals and travel insurance are provided along with these train journeys and allied onboard services.

Though the Indian Railways introduced the concept of private players operating tourist trains on theme-based circuits under the Bharat Gaurav Tourist Trains around a couple of years back, this is the first time that a private company is getting into this segment from Kerala.

Earlier, such private train tours were launched from states such as Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. For instance, the government of Karnataka in association with IRCTC operates private trains to Kashi Prayag, Gaya and Ayodhya. Similarly, private trains are operated between Coimbatore and Shirdi.

Plan to import private trains from Germany

According to officials of Princy Tours, the trains are purchased by SRMPR from the Indian Railways to operate exclusively for tourism purposes. “From Kerala, there are mainly three tour packages — Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram to Goa (four-day package) and Thiruvananthapuram to Ayodhya (eight-day package),” said Devika Menon, director of Princy World Travel Ltd.

“Plans are on to operate around 12 trains from Kerala. Once the initial three routes gain maximum traction, new routes will be introduced,” she said. “This train is being introduced on a trial basis. The SRMPR group will import special trains from Germany to run them privately. Hopefully, the trains will arrive by this year's end,” she said. “The trains have limited stops and only those who have booked the tickets can enter the train. A total of 60 staff, including the paramedical team and pantry are available onboard,” said Devika Menon. The train is equipped with CCTV cameras and WiFi. 

As per the initial plan, the tourist train will operate to the specific destinations with a week’s gap. “We have received the slots to operate from June to September. The dates for Mumbai and Ayodhya will be released soon,” she said.

The trains will have boarding from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod from Kerala.
