Help protect the vines that make our special wines.

Margaret River is one of the unique wine regions in the world that can grow vines on their own root system due to the absence of the vine pest Phylloxera (fil-ox-era). The minute aphid-like pest attacks grapevine roots and causes decline in vine health and ultimately impedes the vine’s capacity to produce. For more information visit the Phylloxera website .

Your shoes and clothing can spread pests and diseases.  Please ensure you help protect Margaret River vines from phylloxera and other pests and diseases whilst visiting our region.

  • Please don’t walk amongst our vines.
  • Please do not enter vineyards without permission
  • Please observe biosecurity protocols during your visit.

The Perfect Wine Tour Itinerary | Margaret River

Walking through a vineyard in the Margaret River Region

No trip to the Margaret River Region is complete without a cheeky wine tour to experience the products the region has to offer. We have done the hard work and sampled all the best Margaret River wineries. This beautiful area, just three hours south of Perth , is blessed with stunning coastlines, rich soil and incredible wines. With over 95 cellar doors (tasting rooms) dotted around the area, you have an overwhelming selection to choose from. Not to mention the breweries, and other local food artisans to sample.

Although there are many reputable wine tour companies, if you have a designated driver, it is just as easy, and a lot more budget friendly, to do a self-guided tour. Thankfully, the majority of the wineries don’t require an appointment or charge a fee. The wine tasting is provided free of charge as they generate their money from wine sales.

While we cannot claim to be wine experts, we have crafted (what we believe to be) a strong itinerary of some of our favourite spots in the region including the best Margaret River wineries. It was designed to take between 5-6 hours, which includes a lunch break at one of the spots. It is possible to make it a half day affair, but as many wineries are open between 10am and 5pm, we suggest taking your time and making the most of your day. The tour originates from Dunsborough town centre, but can be easily adapted to start anywhere throughout the region.

Ultimate Wine Tour Itinerary

1. palmers winery.

Despite the more industrial-looking cellar door, Palmer’s is a great choice to start your tour. The wines are delicious and very reasonably priced, and it gets the tour underway immediately, rather than sitting on a bus for 30 min as you make your way down Caves Road.

*Favourite: 2017 Palmers Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

2. Happs Wines

Although the environment was a bit stuffy and posh for our style, we were won over by the beautiful outdoor amphitheatre and lawn. Plus, I am always a fan of a winery that has more on offer than just wine. Happs has paired with local artists to showcase pottery and paintings as well as offering gourmet picnic staples such as delicious meats and cheeses.

* Favourite: 2016 Three Hills Greanche Shiraz Mataro

3. Wild Hop Brewing Company

The new kid on the block. This brewery just opened at the end of February and it has already been buzzing with locals and tourists alike. The brewery is beautifully designed and specializes in small batch brewing. So get yourself one of its tasting boards so you can sample the goods.

*Favourite: Tasting board of 4 beers

4. Swings & Roundabouts Winery

This place has continuously been a go-to favourite for me throughout the years. Less upscale than some of the other wineries, this place has adopted a more relaxed environment with its sprawling outdoor area, lawn games, picnic tables and to-die-for wood-fired pizza. If you are looking for a more casual lunch, this would be your spot!

Swings & Roundabouts make the some of the best Prosecco we have ever had and it is our go to choice every time we visit.

*Favourite: NV Swings & Roundabouts Sparkling

5. House of Cards Wine & Gabriel Chocolate

House of Cards ticks all the boxes. They have very friendly cellar door staff, cute décor, a well-rounded wine selection and locally made goods and products. If you are still looking for a lunch stop, just next door is Chow’s Table, a restaurant offering Chinese/Malay cuisine with a fresh twist. And if that isn’t enough for you, there is also Gabriel Chocolate on the same property to satisfy for your sweet tooth.

* Favourite: 2018 AppleJack cider aged in oak

6. Robert Oatley Vineyards

One of the more renowned wineries in the region, known for their fine dining and award-winning wines. This place was a little posh for our standards, but for true wine connoisseurs it would be an integral stop on any tour. The garden and outdoor area is one of the best in the region and makes for some beautiful photos.

* Favourite: 2017 Robert Oatley Signature Series Great Southern Riesling

7. Beer Farm

Very aptly named, this location is rustic and relaxed in a repurposed old barn and outbuildings. Beer Farm has become a fast favourite in the region often hosting trendy events and live music on their sprawling property. It makes for a perfect last stop on the trip where you can relax, enjoy the food trucks and stalls and wind-down with a great beer.

* Favourite: Beer Farm NEIPA – New England IPA

With almost a hundred cellar doors in the region and a growing number of breweries, there is no way to cram all the hotspots into one day. This itinerary was designed to include some of our favourites while at the same time creating a logical and concise route. That being said, there are a couple spots that didn’t fit into the route listed above but are worth a visit if you have the time.

Honourable Mentions:

Eagle bay brewing co.

With an energetic atmosphere and delicious beers, you cannot go wrong with Eagle Bay Brewing Co. Despite being a brewery, the sleek design and picturesque location have created a classy environment, often hosting weddings and events. For good reason, it has become a well-established brand and a must-do spot for anyone visiting the region.

* Favourite: Eagle Bay Pale Ale

Known for their wide selection of olive oils, Olio Bello also has a large variety of gourmet products – dips, lotions, balms, jams and more. Its boutique restaurant with olive tree-shaded outdoor seating and artisan products makes for a perfect lunch destination.

*Favourite: Roasted Garlic Infused Olive Oil

Sampling wines and experiencing different food artisans, while witnessing the well-kept vineyards and stunning cellar doors, is the perfect way to get a taste of how beautiful this region is. After a day filled exploring the best Margaret River wineries, be sure to nurse your hangover by exploring the incredible coastlines and the rest that this region has to offer . We can safely say that this place has become our favourite destination and hopefully it will top your list as well!

Planning Your Margaret River Adventure

When planning your tour of Margaret River, remember to include the top three must do Margaret River activities. Canoeing on the Margaret River, a walk on one of the sections of the Cape to Cape Track and of course a Margaret River wine tour featuring wine tasting and lunch at one of the iconic Margaret River wineries. The Margaret River Discovery Co. can help you tick all of these, and more, off your list of things to do in Margaret River. We have exclusive behind the scenes access to the wineries and special approvals and permits to operate in the National Park and Margaret River to do things you couldn’t normally do on your own.

Our Margaret River wine tours and Margaret River adventure tours incorporate the very best of the region into a fun and relaxing day out. We suggest you book your Margaret River tour before you leave home as our small group tours regularly book out several weeks in advance and we want you to have the best experience of the region.

While on tour with the Margaret River Discovery Co. we are happy to give you other suggestions of what to do in the Margaret River region , including restaurants, attractions, emerging superstar wineries and a few local secrets.

The most frequent question we receive is “what Margaret River tour should we do?”

Usually the number one reason for visiting the Margaret River region is the wine. So it makes sense to do a Margaret River wine tour.

But you really need to think about what that actually means. If you stand in the Margaret River Visitor Centre and watch how the ‘herd’ behaves you’ll see them stand in front of the brochure rack and choose the tour with the ‘most number of Margaret River wineries’ with the ‘most number of ‘free’ wine tastings.’

That suits some people but others may not be too excited by a day rushing about ticking each winery off the list. Meanwhile the other dozen people in the bus get progressively drunker and sleepier until no one has any idea what they are tasting. Yep it does sound like a great idea at the start of the day but invariably after about the third winery for most people it becomes incredibly boring and probably not the best use of a precious holiday day.

Sadly the vast majority of visitors to the region have mediocre experiences and don’t really get to fully experience the real Margaret River. Frustratingly, most people are missing the best bits – the actual Margaret River or the iconic Cape to Cape Track. And yes, this can and should all be experienced as part of your Margaret River wine tour .

My advice is don’t follow the herd. Think differently.

That same advice applies in deciding what tour to select from the Margaret River Discovery Co touring options .

Most people tend to think they want to do the Best of the Best Margaret River Wine Tour . It’s an awesome day and perfectly suited to real wine nerds who want to elevate their understanding of what makes Margaret River wine so special. The food and matching at Cape Mentelle is a real highlight. And we’re stoked to say it’s rated as one of the best behind the scenes wine tour experiences in all of Australia.

If you really really really want an amazing wine tour experience PLUS see and do things you couldn’t normally do then definitely go for the Margaret River Discovery Tour .

The whole day is about the French wine concept of ‘terroir’. It’s kind of hard to explain in English but essentially if refers to the geology, climate and ecology of the area in which grapes are grown. We discover why the Margaret River wine region is considered a winemakers paradise and how those conditions have created the most consistent wine producing in the world.

It’s not a boring school lesson. It’s the opposite. It’s an exciting day showcasing the very best experiences and very best wine in the region.

You’ll start the day with a leisurely canoe down the Margaret River.

For many people they just stopped reading just then. They read the words ‘canoeing’ and went nahhhhhh not me.

Ok let me say if you are one of those people, open your mind to a new experience. I promise you wont get dirty; you wont get wet and you definitely wont fall in. I’ve been doing this for ten years and NO ONE has ever got wet or dirty or fallen in.

I had Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear on tour one day and he described it as “Luxury Canoeing”.

Invariably the people who didn’t want to go canoeing are the ones who love it the most. They didn’t realise they would be floating down a mirror flat section of the Margaret River, watching wildlife and surrounded by towering trees. It’s usually one of the highlights of the day. And if you really really really don’t wont to do it then you can just opt out of that experience and take a short walk along the river.

Yep there will be wine. Plenty of it and premium stuff. We’ll visit one winery and do it well. Ridiculously well. And that’s the big difference in how we operate. We do a few things and do them well instead of rushing through the day.

Our Discovery Tour lunch will include a behind the scenes experience at emerging superstar winery-Fraser Gallop Estate. This is the hottest winery down here at the moment. Winning a mind boggling number of awards and accolades in recent years and arguably the best value winery in the region. Their Cabernet Sauvignon has previously won best Cabernet in the world and the current release just scored a massive 97-points from Australian wine guru James Halliday.

Earlier in the day we’ll also pick up a bit on the Aboriginal and European history of the region with a visit to waterhole/waterfall and have a local honey tasting. It’s a great opportunity to connect with the outdoors and get a few special pictures for the camera.

It’s a day filled with highlights and we like to finish on a super high highlight with a 4WD adventure to link up with the most spectacular section of the legendary Cape to Cape walking trail. I’ll get you onto my favourite part and go for a short walk along the coast to discover the remote Wilyabrup Cliffs. This is an awesome opportunity to spot whales and wildflowers (seasonal) and access a location you couldn’t easily find by yourself.

The Margaret River Discovery Tour is definitely a wine tour, but it’s a hundred times more interesting and rewarding than what the herd do.

Just like it says on my brochure in the brochure rack …… it’s the wine tour for people who don’t do tours!

And don’t just blindly take my word for it. Feel free to check out Margaret River Discovery Co on Tripadvisor  and see what previous guests have to say. I never ask anyone to write a review so these are honest, unsolicited opinions, describing the experience.  Well over 90% of the reviews are for the Discovery Tour.

The Margaret River Discovery Tour tends to sell out a few weeks in advance, so send us an email with the dates you are in Margaret River and we will check availability and let you know how to book.

"What an excellent tour. Our guide Steve was so informative and knew the area very well. This is not a normal wine tour - we visited local sights, coffee works, cheese factory, chocolate factory, skin care factory, beaches, brewery and of course wineries. The lunch at Xanadu was first class and so delicious. This tour represented excellent value - the best we have experienced - well done Harvest and particularly Steve our wonderful guide."

"Our Harvest tour was awesome! Clarice, our driver, was so personable and knowledgeable. As it turned out, there were only 2 couples booked on our weekday tour and so we got a really personal experience. We loved that the tour showcased both the food and wine of the region. The whole day was very relaxed and we never felt rushed or pushed for time. There are so many tour companies operating in the region and we felt so lucky to have chosen the perfect one!"

"Steve and his family have excelled at designing and executing a small group tour that highlights the beautiful Margaret River region. You will learn not only about the exquisite wines but also the community and ecology of the area. Steve is an absolutely fantastic tour guide that will leave you not wanting for anything more from your day. My partner and I lost track of time and glasses of wine between the coffee tasting start and brewery finish and we would not have changed a thing. Highly recommend!"

It is our 1st self drive holiday in WA and MR is one of those bucket list places that we must visit. Just both of us and will be driving from Albany. Am planning 3D/2N in MR, hoping to visit the vinyards, explore the nature and seasides.

Understand that Australia has strict rules on alcohol and driving. Is there any bus tour group or the likes that can pick us and bring us around these wineries ?

Also, as we are driving. Will it be more economical to stay in nearby town via AirBnB or motels ? We are not fussy, just that near to supermarket and eatery will be nice.

Suggestions appreciated.

Yes there are several tours that will visit wineries, breweries and cheese and chocolate factories.

This previous post has some ideas that might help you.

https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g255367-i2088-k9083241-Self_drive_winery_tour_suggestions-Margaret_River_Margaret_River_Region_Western_Australia.html

For accommodation, if you want to be by supermarkets and places to eat then you need to stay in Margaret River town centre or Dunsborough town centre.

There are smaller coastal settlements, and also bush, vineyard, forest and farm accommodation options but there will be no supermarket and very few nearby eating options.

AirBnB isnt popular down in MR. Check the Margaret River visitors centre accommodation site. Both MR and Dunsborough have motels if that's what you want.

Thanks Kerry. I had studied that thread earlier and the last post was interesting too.

Thanks Waddler. At the moment, stays at MR is really pricy. Perhaps a popular place but 1 - 2 nights won't harm. We are exploring if a package self-drive deal may be more sensible. We were looking at http://www.discoveraustralia.com.au/holiday-packages/albany-margaret-river-southern-discovery-self-drive-mp1.html . Have this weekend to do some homework.

Firstly I must declare that I have never been on a winery tour. I visit MR regularly now and usually visit only 1 or 2 wineries each time and only have a couple of samplings so Im good to drive. The better half does all the "hard work" with the wine samplings :) I do however see the tour groups often and they always appear to be having a great time. When family members head down they will always choose a wine tour over driving as well.

There is a list of tours available on the visitor centre website:

http://www.margaretriver.com/tours/wine-beer-food/

...or perhaps email the visitor centre to enquire what tour(s) they might recommend given your age group, interests etc.

If you do decide on staying in one of the townships (Margaret River or Dunsborough as Waddler suggests) then it will make it easier for a tour to drop off and pick up, and you'll have dining options and supermarkets on your doorstep. Dunsborough is on the coast and smaller than MR so if that appeals check it out.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will read up on this.

Once i had a drink or so, I can't drive until the next day. Hence, 1 - 2 nights in MR region seems like a must. Dunsborough seems to be a good choice, as suggested by a few others. Hopefully, the accomodations there are more affordable too.

If you need to find more economical accommodation, you may like to consider that many caravan parks in Australia also have little houses to rent called cabins or villas, with own kitchen and bathroom included. One example that I have stayed at is RAC Holiday Park (Peppermint Park) about 10 kms from Dunsborough, 1 bedroom cabin is $240 for 2 nights midweek:

https://www.big4.com.au/caravan-parks/wa/south-west/rac-busselton-holiday-park/booking/accommodations?ArrivalDateString=24%20May%202016&DepartureDateString=26%20May%202016&NumAdults=2&NumKids=0&NumInfants=0&SiteType=Cabin

Another is Taunton Park nearer to Margaret River township and midweek 3 nights for late May was $260 for 3 nights (so even if you didn't stay the third night that works out to only $130 per night for 2 nights.)

https://www.big4.com.au/caravan-parks/wa/south-west/taunton-farm-holiday-park/booking/accommodations?ArrivalDateString=24%20May%202016&DepartureDateString=27%20May%202016&NumAdults=2&NumKids=0&NumInfants=0&SiteType=Cabin

Thanks for the suggestion. We took an AirBnB room in Vasse for about A$50/night.

An update here.

We had booked our AirBnB in Vasse for 4 nights. Doing a one day wine tour with Cellar d'Or Winery Tour with picked up. I am still planning the rest of the trip and it is happening in the following week.

We paid A$88 for a wine tour with lunch (of cheese board & sample beer).

It just provide you a pick up and transportation to the wineries. The wines are explained from behind the counters and tasting are actually free. No walkabout the vineyards or showing you the wine making areas. The 8 vineyards visited are just 5 - 10 minutes drive from each other.

Only reason we took the tour was the "No Drink & Drive" rule and I will adhere to that for safety reason. Perhaps with a bigger group of friends, it may be wise to get a designated driver for each day of the trip as there are plenty of big & smaller vineyards on the main roads and hidden away (look for those smaller signboard on the main road).

My take about the wine tour ? Not worth the $.
