Since the COVID-19 pandemic reached New York City last spring, Fordham has restricted access to campus for prospective students, hosting online events to replace traditional campus visits. However, the university recently announced in an email to the Fordham community that it will provide new accommodations for visiting prospective students.

John Carroll, associate vice president of Fordham Public Safety, wrote that as of April 7, incoming students are able to attend in-person guided tours on campus once again. Visits will be offered Mondays through Saturdays.

“The University will invite only admitted students who have not previously visited campus, and will initially prioritize visitors from the local metropolitan area: students who attend our community schools and Cristo Rey schools, largely from the five boroughs,” wrote Carroll.

Carroll said the resumption of in-person tours of Fordham’s campuses is in part a response to interest from prospective students and their families. “There has been sustained interest by Rose Hill students, prospective students and families to see Fordham at this critical time when they decide where they plan to spend their next four years to study and possibly reside,” said Carroll. “Many families have been vaccinated; however, we are mandating that they either bring documented proof of vaccination or undergo a COVID test within five days of their scheduled visit.”

The families who visit the Rose Hill campus of Fordham University are currently asked to follow several health and safety protocols to ensure the well-being of the campus community. The number of prospective students in a tour and the total number of tours will be limited at this time. Prospective students will be limited to bringing two additional guests for in-person campus visits. The tours will only be 30 to 45 minutes long and restricted to the outdoor green spaces on campus.

“Additionally, Public Safety will screen every visit, temperature check each person and have them sign COVID related questions based on guidance from CDC and New York State,” said Carroll.

While there are in-person tours, prospective students and their families can also still choose to partake in virtual tours of the campus instead. This option is an opportunity for parties not looking to travel or interact with others during the pandemic. Virtual tours still provide an extensive tour of any of Fordham’s campuses.

Dean Patricia Peek, dean of Undergraduate Admissions, said the virtual tours and information sessions have been successful this year. “Our student ambassadors have been hosting much more immersive live virtual walking tours which give students and families access to more areas of our campus, including some views inside buildings and highlight some favorite places in our neighborhoods,” said Peek. “During our Guided Virtual Tour, you’ll watch our campus come to life, as you hear our students share the undergraduate experience. While you’ll be welcomed by an admissions counselor, these events are hosted by our current students.”

The virtual tours include a live picture of what campus looks like, rain or shine. It features a look inside certain noteworthy buildings, favorite spots on and around campus and descriptions of different parts of campus.

There are some aspects of campus and university life that virtual tours aren’t able to efficiently or effectively capture. The interaction with students, professors and other members of the campus community will be limited due to the virtual format, explained Peek.

“However, to make up for that, we have supplemented the virtual tour experiences with an array of interactive academic, social and topic based sessions that include combinations of current students, faculty, deans and staff in an effort to connect incoming families with members of our community,” said Peek.

The virtual tours provide a special opportunity for families who don’t have the financial means to attend a traditional tour or are choosing to not travel during the pandemic. The virtual tours are very comprehensive and will provide students with a unique experience. Peek added, “The enhanced virtual options that were created as a result of the pandemic are here to stay.”

Vatican’s Secretary of State Proposes Partnership Between Fordham and Rome School

An invitation from the second-highest ranking official in the vatican.

In a 20-minute speech, Cardinal Parolin said that concern for education has always been at the heart of the church—something this is “clearly evident” at Fordham, especially through its founder, Archbishop Hughes .

A priest and a woman wearing black smile at each other.

Cardinal Parolin and President Tetlow

“Archbishop Hughes had made education a priority, because he believed it was essential if the poor immigrant population that made up the majority of his flock were to emerge from poverty and advance economically and socially in their adopted land,” said Cardinal Parolin.

He said that the same desire for social justice inspired his predecessor, Cardinal Domenico Tardini, who served as Vatican secretary of state from 1958 to to 1961. One year after World War II ended, Cardinal Tardini founded Villa Nazareth— a Vatican-affiliated residential college for talented students from low socioeconomic backgrounds—to help orphans reach their potential in war-torn Italy. Since then, Villa Nazareth has evolved into a prestigious institution that educates and houses gifted students, free of charge. There are currently about 170 students—college-age men and women who study a wide range of disciplines—including students from third-world countries marked by poverty and social and political strife, he said.

“In the 76 years since its founding, Villa Nazareth has never lost the spirit with which Cardinal Tardini established it,” said Cardinal Parolin, who supervises the school. “It is our hope that, in our shared journey as church, a recognition of the similarities between our two solid and fruitful educational experiences can lead to a long-term encounter, support, and friendship between Fordham and Villa Nazareth.”

A Meeting in a Historic Place

The meeting with Cardinal Parolin was part of a summer pilgrimage to mark the 500th anniversary of the spiritual conversion of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, who spent 15 years in Rome. The trip was also an opportunity for the University’s leaders to nourish their spiritual faith and to build new partnerships abroad, particularly with church leadership and educational institutions.

The Fordham delegation met with Cardinal Parolin in the Apostolic Palace, a grand building with more than 1,000 rooms, including the official residence of the reigning pope and government offices.

“We were one floor below the papal apartments , meeting with the number two person in the Vatican and sitting around a table in a room that is used to sign treaties between the Vatican and countries around the world,” said John Cecero, S.J., vice president for mission integration and ministry at Fordham. “You knew you were in a very unique and special place.”

For nearly a decade, Cardinal Parolin has served as secretary of state of the Vatican, where he works closely with Pope Francis to govern the universal church. As a spokesperson for the Apostolic See, he aims to carry out its goal of working with international organizations to safeguard the basic rights of every person. He is also an expert on the Middle East who has helped to reopen dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians.

“I’m thrilled that Fordham is trying to have a closer relationship with the Vatican,” said Ignacio Fernández de Lahongrais , GABELLI ’87, a member of the Fordham delegation. “We are a major Catholic institution in the United States, and we should be at the center of openness and intellectual curiosity.”

Several people observe a bulletin board filled with pictures.

Expanding Fordham’s Global Footprint

Later that evening, four members of the Fordham delegation visited the campus. They toured the facilities, spoke with current students, and discussed a potential partnership with Villa Nazareth’s deputy president, Archbishop Claudio Celli.

Archbishop Celli said that an exchange program between the two Catholic schools could be powerful—and Fordham’s senior leadership agreed.

“I would love to think that we could find a way to figure out how to work together and try to enhance both the incredible work that you’re doing here and the mission of Fordham University,” Armando Nuñez Jr., chair-elect of the Fordham Board of Trustees , said to Archbishop Celli and other administrators at Villa Nazareth. “So again, thank you for your inspiring service.”

Father Cecero, who is helping to coordinate a partnership with Villa Nazareth, said the potential partnership will help Fordham to increase its global presence and its connection with the church.

“This relationship will be very important in terms of Fordham’s ambitions to expand our global footprint,” said Father Cecero. “Through Cardinal Parolin, who is a sponsor of Villa Nazareth, we will have an opportunity to stay connected with the universal church.”

School of Social and Behavioral Sciences: Robert O. Carr, M.S is the founder of Give Something Back, Heartland Payment Systems, and Beyond. As a high school senior in a troubled family in rural Illinois, Robert O. Carr was surprised to be awarded a $250 college scholarship in 1963 by the local Woman’s Club. A high school senior, he had not applied for the award. In fact, he did not know it existed. But the honor made him so proud he vowed that if he ever had extra money, he would use it to provide scholarships to students who had also faced adversities.

After college, he briefly held jobs at a bank and as a teacher at a community college. He then went into business for himself as founder and CEO of two large companies, Heartland Payment Systems, and Beyond.  In his fifties, Heartland Payment Systems struck it bigger than Carr had ever dreamed possible. In 2003, he founded Give Something Back, which provides college scholarships, as well as academic and social mentoring, to students who have endured adversity. He has invested $85 million of his own money in Give Back, which in recent years has focused on students who have experienced foster care, homelessness or the incarceration of a parent. With the success of Give Back, government agencies in five states have hired the organization to work with students facing hardship. Carr will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters.
