Me and my friend had a brilliant trip Karim our guide up the mountain was really insightful and the guide from imlil to merzouger was great we really got on well with him and he couldn’t do enough for us. We have had an amazing week and Mustfa the guy who organised it all has been helpful and responsive. It’s mid august now and I plan to go back in February to do the winter accent. Absolutely great week for such a great price.

I don't know where to start with this review😀. The trip has been amazing and rewarding and felt much longer than the 5 days. From the very beginning I was looked after by some of the warmest and most friendly people you could wish to meet. I was met at my Riad in Marrakesh on the first morning which saved any stress trying to find the meeting point. We saw many things on our way to Merzouga like Dades Gorge and Tinghir which was my favourite. Our guide in Tinghir was such a cool guy. The night in the desert was very special. The guys running our camp were brilliant and the tent was so comfortable plus the sunrise on camel back was something else. And as strange as this might seem, yes we did have Wifi in our desert camp 🤣The journey back from Merzouga to Marrakesh is a full days drive so be prepared for that. Our driver stopped enough times to give your legs a stretch but it's a long day. The most memorable bit for me was the climb up Mt Toubkhal. Ibrahim who was my driver from Marrakesh to Imlil picked me up in Marrakesh and drove me to my Riad in Imlil. He was literally sitting waiting for me in Marrakesh so again no stress at all. Ibrahim met me again after the climb and took me to my hotel back in Marrakesh, even though it was hard to find😀 It was pretty seamless and well organised the whole trip. I have to pay special mention to Hassan who was our guide for Toubkhal. I have rarely met a nicer, kinder human being and he looked after us the whole time. Even when we were a little hungry on the first day up to the Toubkhal Refuge he shared some of his and another guide Jamal's own food to tide us over until dinner. So generous and kind. We got up at 2.30am and climbed Toubkhal the next morning in time to see the sunrise, amazing. We were back in Imlil for lunch, had lunch with Hassan and that was the trip over really. Mustapha who runs Moroccobestvisits was in touch with me every evening via whatsapp to check how the day had been and arrangements for the next morning so again this helped to avoid any stress with arrangements etc. What an amazing country Morocco is and my favourite memory will be how amazing the people are. Genuine, warm and so helpful. Book this trip for memories that will last a lifetime😀

The tour was amazing. There were a few scheduling issues but everything worked out fine in the end. Mustapha, the guide coordinator was very accommodating and always updated and communicated with along the way. And my guide in Mt.Toubkal trek Abdul was just so caring and always anticipated my needs out up there in the mountains. I for sure will recommend Skyhook to my family and friends for any future travel plans.

A great opportunity to experience what Morocco has to offer in a short period of time. While the trip to the dessert is less active involving long drives, the destination is absolutely worth it - stunning scenery and colours. The Toubkal experience is the active part of the holiday. The track was an amazing experience - a good challenge, helped by experienced and helpful guide, with amazing views!

I've just retuned from the 5 days Toubkal and Sahara Desert tour and what an amazing experience. We were so well looked after through out the trip. Our driver Aziz was always punctual and extremely helpful and our incredible guide Hadid went above and beyond to help me reach the summit of Mount Toubkal. Everyone was so extremely kind and helpful. I will definitely be using Skyhook Adventures again....and hopefully in the very near future.

Where is Merzouga located?

Merzouga is a village in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a 50km long and 5km wide set of sand dunes that reach up to 350m high. Most people are here to take a camel safari into the dunes, and to get a taste of remote tourism-influenced Berber life.

Where are the Atlas Mountains located?

It stretches around 2,500 km (1,600 mi) through Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The range's highest peak is Toubkal, which is in central Morocco, with an elevation of 4,167 metres (13,671 ft). The Atlas mountains are primarily inhabited by Berber populations. The terms for 'mountain' are adrar and adras in some Berber languages

How big is Toubkal National Park?

The national park encompasses an area of 146.7 square miles (380 sq km). Mount Toubkal is the highlight of the park with the collective High Atlas Mountains attracting hikers and climbers from around the world. The mountain is the tallest in North Africa.

Where is Toubkal located?

Located 63 km (39 mi) south of the city of Marrakesh, and visible from it, Toubkal is an ultra prominent peak, the highest for over 2,000 km (1,200 mi). For climbers it is "the most popular mountain objective in the Atlas mountains".

What to do in Toubkal National Park?

Climbing and trekking up the abundance of summits within the High Atlas Mountains of Toubkal National Park is the biggest draw and highlight of the park. Mount Toubkal and Sahara Desert Trek

Mount Toubkal and Sahara Desert Trek 26

What to expect

Our Mount Toubkal and Sahara Desert Trek walking and discovery holiday in Morocco combines the challenge of summitting Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak (4,167m), with some light trekking in the High Atlas Mountains and camel riding in the Sahara Desert (the dunes of Erg Chebbi). This is a privately-guided holiday, you will not be part of a group, and your party will be accompanied by a personal guide, a cook and a muleteer.

  • The High Atlas Mountains
  • Sahara Desert camel ride
  • Mount Toubkal
  • Toubkal National Park
  • Berber villages
  • The dunes of Erg Chebbi

Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil (1,740m) to Mt Toubkal Base Camp (3,207m) | 6-7h

Morning private transfer from Marrakech to the village of Imlil (90km / 2h). There you will leave the vehicle and, in the company of your mountain guide, begin your trek, heading along the Mizane Valley, first towards the village of Aremd and then onto the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch.

Built on a moraine spur overlooking the valley floor, Aremd is the largest village in the valley. It provides an exciting mix of traditional terraced farming and streets that seem to be permanently gridlocked by goats and cattle. Continuing east and crossing the floodplain, your route takes you along mule tracks and up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley.

Crossing the river, you eventually come to the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims alike (although only Muslims are allowed to cross the stone bridge to visit the shrine itself). From here, the trail continues to ascend steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snowline and the Mouflons Toubkal Refuge (3,207m), your stop for the night.

  • Accommodation: Refuge LeMouflons (dormitory; optional upgrade to a private room)
  • Meals: Packed lunch and dinner; tea and coffee
  • Walking distance: 6-7h

Day 2: Base Camp (3,207m) to Mount Toubkal (4,167m) | 9-11h

Early in the morning, you will make your attempt on the summit of Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in Northern Africa. The route takes you up the south cirque, crossing the stream above the refuge and then heading across one of the numerous scree fields, where you will have to negotiate a seemingly endless carpet of boulders and rocks. The walking is relatively straightforward, but the scree and the altitude will make it difficult, however, the views along the way make the walk more than worthwhile.

Cresting the ridgeline, you will reach the plateau, from where it is a short walk to the summit, and the vistas are quite breathtaking. From the peak, there are unrestricted views in every direction, from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north and as far south as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara.

Retracing your steps, you then return down the mountain and head back towards Imlil, where you will spend the night.

  • Accommodation: a traditional riad ( Dar Adrar , Jnane Imlil or similar)
  • Meals: Full Board; tea and coffee
  • Walking distance: 9-11h

Day 3: Imlil – Dades Valley | 2-4 hrs

You will be picked up from your accommodation in Imlil at 9.00 am and head through the Atlas Mountains, driving over the stunning Tizi-n-Tichka mountain pass. You’ll pass through lots of Berber villages, and once you’re in the desert, you’ll see riverside oases and barren hillsides dotted with kasbahs (fortified dwellings that house families and their livestock).

Along the way, you will have the option to take a break and visit the Ouarzazate Film Studios. Measured by acreage, it is the world’s largest film studio. Many sets from filming various movies and TV series, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones, remain in place. Because of this, the studio also operates with guided tours and has become a popular tourist destination.

A side trip is also possible to Ait Benhaddou. This is an ancient fortified city containing countless kasbahs and has been filmed in numerous Hollywood movies (The Mummy, Gladiator, Alexander, Lawrence of Arabia). You will have the chance to walk around the buildings and explore with your guide. Once you reach Dades Gorge, you have the option of going for a short hike, or relaxing at your hotel. Overnight in Dades.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Dades (Babylon or similar)
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Walking distance: 2-4h; Driving time: 6h

Day 4: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga | 1.5-2h

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer from the Dades Valley to Todra Gorge – a massive fault dividing the High Atlas mountains, rising up 300m in a narrow valley with palmeries and Berber villages. Here, you can go for a hike to explore the palmery, a green oasis full of large date palms.

After lunch, you’ll head further into the desert to the desert gateway town of Merzouga to pick up supplies for your desert trip. You will then drive on to a kasbah to pick up your camel.

At sunset, you’ll trek for about one hour by camel to a Berber camp where you will enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner and sleep under the stars or in tents at a desert camp.

  • Accommodation: tent camp in the dunes of Erg Chebbi
  • Meals: Half Board (breakfast and dinner)
  • Walking distance: 1.5-2h (camel ride)

Day 5: Merzouga – Marrakech | 3-4h

Wake up early and enjoy a camel ride at sunrise to explore the area further. After the camel ride (one hour), we will head back to Merzouga on our camels. When we reach Merzouga, you will have breakfast and the opportunity to have a shower. Then we begin our journey through the stony desert and over the Atlas mountains, with plenty of stops for photos, exploring and lunch as we return to Marrakech. The usual arrival time in Marrakech is between 5 and 6 pm (approx. 9h drive).

Vibrant Marrakech is a fascinating city, home to numerous mosques, palaces and gardens. The medina is a densely packed, walled medieval city dating to the Berber Empire, with mazelike alleys where thriving souks (marketplaces) sell traditional textiles, pottery and jewellery. A symbol of the city, and visible for miles, is the Moorish minaret of the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque.

  • Accommodation: no overnights included (you can book an optional extra night in Marrakech)
  • Walking distance: 3-4h (camel riding)

Accommodation

Accommodation is in a tent camp in the desert, a hand-picked hotel in Dadas Valley, a riad in Imlil, a mountain refuge at Mt Toubkal base camp. The Toubkal refuge Les Mouflons is located at 3,207m in height. Its 600m² area allows it to offer single and family rooms with separate showers, as well as seven dormitories. By default, you will be accommodated in a dormitory there; we can optionally try to accommodate you in a private room with en-suite facilities, but this depends on the availability and cannot be guaranteed.

*Hotels are subject to availability. In case a particular hotel is fully booked for your desired dates we will replace it with a hotel of equal value and quality level. We will provide to you exact accommodation details upon booking confirmation.

All breakfasts are included, as well as all lunches and dinners in the mountains (picnic lunches are included when out on walks) and dinners only in the desert. During your mountain walks, you will be accompanied by a local guide, a cook and a muleteer.

Difficulty and terrain

This trip requires excellent physical condition and some trekking experience. No mountaineering or climbing experience required. There are some longer (strenuous) walks on Days 1 and 2, especially the climb to Mt Toubkal, which is non-technical but demanding. The terrain varies, and the trails are often exposed to the sun. In the mountains, the route follows ancient Berber tracks, which can be high, steep, narrow, uneven and rough underfoot ( read more  about difficulty grades ). Parts of the walks are above the snow line. We will provide crampons if needed, which might be the case if doing the trip in winter months.

Due to the lack of signposted trails, you will be supported by a local qualified mountain guide. This is a very remote area. You should be in very good shape and have a good level of walking fitness to get the most from this walk.

This trip is available throughout the year. The flexibility of self-guided holidays means that there are no fixed dates, and you can start your trip on any date during the season.

July is the hottest month in the Atlas Mountains with an average temperature of 29C and the coldest is January at 13C with the most daily sunshine hours at 11 in July. Some walks are above the snow line year-round.

Please note that during Ramadan and Eid al-Adha’s festival times, many restaurants and shops will be closed, which may affect your trip experience. Ramadan and Eid al-Adha change yearly. Ramadan 2024 is expected to begin 11 March and end 09 April (Eid al-Fitr). Eid al-Adha 2024 is expected to be from 16 June to 20 June.

Please note that there might be supplements for bookings over Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

How long does it take to hike Mount Toubkal?

The journey begins in the charming Berber town of Imlil, where you start on a well-marked trail leading into the rocky terrain of the Atlas Mountains. On the first day, hikers usually trek to the Toubkal Refuge, which serves as a base camp. The second day involves an early morning ascent to the summit, allowing trekkers to reach the peak and return to Imlil by the end of the day.

Can beginners climb Mount Toubkal?

Yes, beginners can climb Mount Toubkal. Standing at just over 4,000 meters, it presents a manageable challenge for novice climbers. While the altitude is significant, it isn’t typically high enough to cause severe altitude sickness, provided that climbers take their time to acclimatize slowly and gradually.

Is it safe to climb Toubkal?

Yes, it is generally safe to climb Mount Toubkal. Compared to higher peaks like Mount Everest or Kilimanjaro, Mount Toubkal’s altitude of 4,167 meters poses a lower risk of altitude sickness for most climbers. While the risk is relatively minor, it’s important to take precautions, such as acclimatizing properly and listening to your body, to ensure a safe and enjoyable ascent.

Is climbing Mount Toubkal difficult?

Climbing Mount Toubkal is challenging but not technically difficult. It does not require technical climbing skills, so most people in good physical condition can reach the summit if they are well-prepared and respect the altitude.

Can you get altitude sickness on Mount Toubkal?

Yes, you can get altitude sickness on Mount Toubkal, but it is generally less common than on higher peaks like Everest or Kilimanjaro. This is because Toubkal’s summit, at 4,167 meters, is considerably lower than the altitudes where severe altitude sickness is most likely to occur.

When is the best time to hike Mount Toubkal?

The best time to hike Mount Toubkal is during the months of April-May and September-October. Timing your ascent during these periods ensures favorable weather conditions, making the climb more enjoyable and safer.

Can you climb Mount Toubkal without a guide?

No, you cannot climb Mount Toubkal without a guide. It is mandatory to take a local guide on the trail from Imlil to Jebel Toubkal. If you attempt the trek without a guide, you will be turned back at the police checkpoint just outside Aroumd Village, where your passport details and your guide’s credentials will be checked. Even if you manage to bypass this checkpoint, there are additional checkpoints at Sidi Chamharouch shrine and Refuge du Toubkal where the same regulations are enforced. Having a guide not only ensures compliance with local regulations but also enhances safety and provides valuable local knowledge during your trek.

What people love about Mount Toubkal Tours

We hebben een geweldige ervaring gehad. Prachtige wandeling door 't Atlas Gebergte. Met 2 muilezels die de bagage droegen, een kok, kruier en gids gingen we op pad. Dag 1 liepen we 9 km, dag 2-3 gemiddeld 12 kilometers. Zoals we hadden gehoopt.
Hammit, the hostel contact person and Mohammed, the tour guide for hiking, they are very nice and accommodate all my needs. The food is very delicious. The trek is not easy. I did it very slow. But Mohammed toom very good care and was patient. I was glad to join the tour although I'm the only person in the tour. I don't have to worry the transfer from and back to Marrakesh because the tour included.
The trek was very well organized and our guide was outstanding. I really recommend this tour.

"It started out ackward as the taxi sent tp pick me up was late and o didnt have contact info for him. That taxi driver and the mountain guide spoke French not English. The second half of the tour went beter. I had Abraham as a driver and he spoke English and pointed out alot of sights that where not outlined in the tour itenary. He was also flexable on what we wanted to do. The desert camp was disorganized but a good experance. I recommend you talk to them early about transport back to the hotel. My camel didnt come and i ended up riding back in the bed of a pickup

MTB in Morocco

"I recently had the pleasure of going on the 5-day Atlas Mountain Biking Adventure, and words cannot capture the sheer magic of this journey. As someone who seeks travel experiences beyond the ordinary, this tour exceeded every expectation, offering a transformative blend of culture, nature, and genuine connections. From the vibrant pulse of Marrakech to the tranquil embrace of the Atlas Mountains, every moment was thoughtfully curated. The biking routes through non-touristy regions unveiled landscapes that felt untouched and pure. Small tracks led us through a maze of Berber villages, each a gem with its own unique story and warm hospitality. The absence of 4x4 transfers allowed for an authentic connection with the surroundings. Pedaling through the High Atlas mountains, the ever-changing scenery, from rugged peaks to lush valleys, left me breathless. The journey wasn't just a physical adventure; it was an immersion into the heart of Berber culture. Accommodations were carefully selected, offering a genuine taste of local life. Guesthouses, homestays, and hotels provided comfort and authenticity, creating a perfect balance. The tour's strong points, from the quality of the course to the unusual encounters with locals, showcased the dedication of the organizers. The daily distances and elevations were well-managed, ensuring a challenging yet achievable experience. The tour wasn't just about the thrill of biking; it was about making a meaningful impact through charity tourism. Engaging with the local community in activities like cooking, music, photography, and art added depth to the adventure. In conclusion, the Atlas Mountain Biking Adventure is more than a tour; it's a life-changing experience etched into my heart forever. To fellow travelers seeking a journey that transcends the ordinary, I wholeheartedly recommend securing a spot on this extraordinary adventure. Let the rhythm of your heartbeat align with the pulse of Morocco's breathtaking terrain.

Day 1 Marrakech - Imlil - Azib n Tamsoult

On the first day of your adventure, you will be picked up from Marrakech and driven to Imlil, a charming village nestled in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains at an elevation of 1,780 meters.

From here, you will embark on a thrilling 6-hour trek that will take you out of the Imlil Valley and into the scenic Azzadene Valley. This journey will take you through a variety of landscapes, including rugged mountain terrain, pristine alpine forests, and stunning river valleys.

Along the way, you will pass through Tizi N’Mzik, a mountain pass located at an elevation of 2,450 meters. This is a perfect spot to rest and take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges.

As you continue on your trek, you will come across the refuge at Azib n’Tamsoult, a traditional Berber village nestled amidst the scenic beauty of the Atlas Mountains. Here, you will have the opportunity to interact with the friendly locals and learn more about their culture and way of life.

You will also get to witness the majestic Ighouliden waterfalls, which are one of the highlights of the Azzadene Valley. These cascading falls are a sight to behold, and offer the perfect photo opportunity.

As the day draws to a close, you will arrive at the Lipeney mountain refuge, located at an elevation of 3,000 meters. This cozy refuge offers a comfortable place to rest and recharge for the night, while also offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Get a good night’s sleep as you prepare for the next leg of your adventure.

Day 2 Azib n tamsoult - Agelzim 3560m - Toubkal base camp

On the second day of your journey, you will begin with a challenging climb out of the Azzadene Valley towards the Toubkal Refuge, located at an elevation of 3,206 meters. This trek will take you over the Aguelzim Mountain pass, which stands at an impressive 3,560 meters.

The climb up the Aguelzim pass is a fairly steep and demanding ascent, but the spectacular views of the Atlas Mountain Range that you will enjoy along the way make it all worthwhile.

After reaching the summit of the pass, you will pause for a well-deserved break and enjoy a delicious lunch while taking in the breathtaking vistas that surround you.

From here, you will continue on to the Toubkal Refuge, also known as the Niltner Hut, where you will spend the night. This refuge is the last stop for many trekkers before making the final push to the summit of Mount Toubkal, which stands at an impressive 4,167 meters.

You will likely be sharing a bunk room with other adventurous travelers who are also planning to tackle Mount Toubkal early the next morning. Take advantage of this opportunity to meet new people and swap stories of your adventures in Morocco.

As you settle in for the night, enjoy the cozy comforts of the refuge and prepare yourself for the exciting challenges that lie ahead.

Day 3 Toubkal Ascent - Imlil

On day three, you will rise early and embark on the most challenging part of your adventure – the ascent to the summit of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa standing at 4,167 meters.

The climb will take approximately 4-5 hours, and while it is a demanding trek, the stunning views of the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert that await you at the summit make it all worthwhile. On a clear day, you can see for miles in every direction and take in the beauty of the landscape that surrounds you.

After taking in the views and capturing some memorable photos, you will begin the descent back down to the Toubkal Refuge, where you will stop for a well-deserved rest and a bite to eat.

From here, you will continue on down the well-worn path towards Imlil, which will take approximately 3-4 hours. This descent will involve navigating through rocky terrain, so make sure to watch your step.

Once you arrive back in Imlil, you can relax and reflect on the incredible journey you’ve just completed. This is a fairly long day of trekking, involving 8-9 hours of walking and a total ascent of 900 meters and descent of almost 2,500 meters.

Enjoy a comfortable night’s rest in Imlil, where you can relive the memories of your Toubkal ascent and look forward to the next stage of your adventure.

Day 4 Imlil - Dades Valley

On day four, you will depart from Imlil after breakfast and begin your journey towards the Dades Valley. You will be picked up from your accommodation at 9:00 am and travel over the stunning Tizi-n-Tichka mountain pass, which offers breathtaking views of the Atlas Mountains.

As you drive through the mountains, you will pass through many traditional Berber villages, each with its unique charm and character. Once you descend from the mountains, you will enter the desert region and witness the stark contrast between the lush greenery of the mountains and the barren hillsides dotted with kasbahs, which are fortified dwellings that house families and their livestock.

Along the way, you will have the option to take a break and visit the famous Ouarzazate Film Studios, which have been used as a location for many famous movies and TV shows.

Alternatively, you can stop for a hike and immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty of the surrounding area.

After a full day of driving and sightseeing, you will arrive at the Dades Gorge, where you can choose to go for a hike or simply relax at your hotel and take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

You will spend the night in Dades, where you can unwind and prepare for the next stage of your adventure. The total driving time for this day is approximately 6 hours, but the stunning views and memorable experiences along the way will make the journey feel much shorter.

Day 5 Dades Valley - Todra gorge - Merzouga

After a delicious breakfast at your hotel in Dades, you will begin your journey towards the famous Todra Gorge. The Todra Gorge is a massive fault dividing the High Atlas mountains, rising up to 300 meters in a narrow valley with palmeries and Berber villages. Here, you will have the opportunity to go for a hike and explore the palmery, a lush green oasis full of large date palms that offers a striking contrast to the surrounding arid landscape.

After your hike, you will enjoy a delicious lunch before continuing your journey further into the desert towards the gateway town of Merzouga. Here, you will have the opportunity to pick up any necessary supplies for your upcoming desert trip.

Your next stop will be a kasbah where you will meet your trusty camel and embark on an unforgettable journey through the Sahara desert. At sunset, you will trek for an hour-and-a-half by camel to a Berber camp where you will enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner and spend the night under the stars or in tents at the desert camp.

Total driving time for this day is approximately 5 hours, but the stunning scenery and unique experiences along the way will make it feel like a breeze. This day promises to be full of adventure and excitement as you immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty of Morocco.

Day 6 Merzouga - Ait Benhaddou

Rise early to witness the stunning sunrise over the desert before returning to the kasbah by camel. After freshening up and enjoying a delicious breakfast, depart from Merzouga for a scenic drive to Ait Benhaddou, an ancient fortified city that has served as the backdrop for numerous Hollywood films including The Mummy, Gladiator, and Lawrence of Arabia.

Explore the winding streets and countless kasbahs of this atmospheric city with your knowledgeable guide. Immerse yourself in the history and culture of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, and marvel at the stunning views of the surrounding desert landscape.

After a full day of exploration, retire to your hotel near Ait Benhaddou for a well-deserved rest. (Total driving time 5-6 hours)

Day 7 Ait Benhaddou - Marrakech

On the last day of your Toubkal and Erg Chebbi Tour, you will journey along the picturesque Ounilla Valley towards the Telouet Kasbah. This historic and crumbling kasbah was once an important trading hub and is a fascinating place to explore. After your visit, you will have lunch before setting off on your final leg of the journey back to Marrakech, passing over the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass. As you wind your way through the stunning Atlas Mountains, take the time to reflect on the incredible experiences you’ve had over the past week. You will arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon, where your adventure concludes.

When to hike in Morocco?

The best time to hike in Morocco is during the spring (March to May) and the fall (September to November). During these months, the weather is typically mild, with comfortable temperatures during the day and cool nights. The landscapes are also more colorful during these seasons, as wildflowers bloom in the spring and the foliage changes color in the fall.

However, it’s still possible to hike in Morocco during the summer and winter months. Summer can be hot, but the higher elevations in the Atlas Mountains offer cooler temperatures. Winter can be cold, especially at higher altitudes, but there are still opportunities for winter hiking and skiing. It’s important to note that some trails and passes may be inaccessible during the winter months due to snow and ice.

Can I climb Toubkal without a guide?

It is technically possible to climb Toubkal without a guide, but it’s not recommended. The terrain can be challenging, especially for inexperienced hikers, and having a guide can provide added safety and support. A guide can also help with navigation, especially in areas where the trail may not be clearly marked.

In addition to safety concerns, climbing Toubkal without a guide may not be permitted. The Moroccan authorities require hikers to obtain a permit before climbing Toubkal, and our tour companie and guides are licensed to issue these permits. If you don’t have a permit or are caught climbing without one, you may be fined or even deported.

It’s also worth noting that climbing with us can enhance your overall experience. Our guide can provide insights into the local culture and history, and can help you appreciate the natural beauty of the area. We will also take care of logistics, such as arranging transport and accommodations, leaving you free to focus on enjoying your hike.

How hard is it to climb Mount Toubkal?

Climbing Mount Toubkal can be a challenging hike, but it’s generally considered a moderate to strenuous climb. The difficulty of the climb will depend on several factors, including your level of fitness, previous hiking experience, and the route you choose to take.

The standard route to the summit starts in the village of Imlil and involves hiking to the Toubkal Refuge, where climbers can rest for the night before making the final ascent to the summit the following day. The hike to the refuge is approximately 5-6 hours and involves a steady uphill climb.

The final ascent to the summit involves some steep and rocky terrain and can take 3-4 hours, depending on your pace. Altitude can also be a factor, as the summit of Toubkal is 4,167 meters (13,671 feet) above sea level. It’s important to acclimate properly to the altitude and take necessary precautions to prevent altitude sickness.

That being said, the climb to Mount Toubkal is accessible to most hikers with a moderate level of fitness and previous hiking experience. It’s recommended to train and prepare for the climb in advance, with a focus on building endurance and stamina.

Overall, while climbing Mount Toubkal can be a challenging hike, the stunning views from the summit and the sense of accomplishment make it a rewarding experience.

How cold is it in the High Atlas Mountains?

The temperature in the High Atlas Mountains can vary greatly depending on the season and altitude. In general, the higher you go, the colder it gets.

During the winter months (December to February), temperatures in the High Atlas Mountains can drop below freezing, especially at higher altitudes. It’s not uncommon for temperatures to reach -10°C (14°F) or colder at the summit of Mount Toubkal. It’s important to come prepared with warm clothing and gear if you plan to visit during the winter.

In the summer months (June to August), temperatures in the High Atlas Mountains can be quite hot during the day, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F). However, temperatures can drop significantly at night, especially at higher altitudes, so it’s important to pack warm layers for evenings and early mornings.

Overall, it’s best to come prepared for a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions when visiting the High Atlas Mountains, as the weather can be unpredictable and can change quickly.

What equipment do I need to hike Toubkal Mount in the winter?

Hiking Toubkal Mount in the winter can be challenging and requires proper equipment to ensure your safety and comfort. Here are some essential items you should bring with you:

Insulated and waterproof boots: Your boots should be sturdy, waterproof, and insulated to keep your feet warm and dry in snowy conditions.

Warm clothing layers: You’ll need to dress in layers, including a base layer, mid-layer, and outer shell, to stay warm and regulate your body temperature. Insulated jackets, hats, gloves, and scarves are also necessary.

Waterproof and windproof jacket and pants: You’ll need a waterproof and windproof jacket and pants to protect you from the snow, wind, and rain.

Crampons and ice axe: In snowy conditions, you may need crampons and an ice axe to help you navigate the mountain safely.

Backpack: A sturdy backpack with a waterproof cover is essential for carrying your gear, snacks, and water.

Sleeping bag: If you plan to spend the night in a mountain refuge, you’ll need a warm and insulated sleeping bag.

Sunglasses and sunscreen: The sun’s reflection on the snow can be intense, so bring sunglasses and sunscreen to protect your eyes and skin.

Is it safe to trek in Morocco?

Morocco is generally considered a safe country for trekking, but like any travel destination, it’s important to take appropriate safety precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking experience. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Stay on designated trails: Stick to designated trails and avoid venturing off into unknown areas.

Dress appropriately: Dress appropriately for the weather conditions and bring the necessary equipment, such as proper footwear, warm clothing, and rain gear.

Stay hydrated: Bring enough water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized throughout your trek.

Avoid hiking alone: It’s always safer to hike with a group or a guide, especially if you’re not familiar with the area.

By taking these precautions, you can enjoy a safe and rewarding trekking experience in Morocco.

💎 why we love it , 🏁 tour itinerary: 5 day mt toubkal ascent and sahara desert combined tour, day 1: marrakech – imlil – base camp of toubkal.

Drive from Marrakech to Imlil and trek to Toubkal Refuge via Aremd & the Mizane ValleyLeaving the city behind we drive south today, towards the craggy peaks and plunging valleys of the Toubkal Massif. Crossing the Haouz Plain we pass through the tiny town of Asni, from where our road begins to climb towards the foothills of the Massif. Below us, the valley of the Oued Rhirhaia stretches out into the distance and small villages cling to the sides of the steep hills as we meander our way towards the village of Imlil. Here we leave our vehicle and, in the company of our mountain guide, begin our trek, heading along the Mizane Valley, first towards the village of Aremd and then onto the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. Built on a moraine spur overlooking the valley floor, Aremd is the largest village in the valley and provides an interesting mix of traditional terraced farming, gites, and streets that seem to be permanently gridlocked by goats and cattle. For generations the local Berber villagers have worked these lands, producing corn, potatoes, and walnuts from the harsh landscape. Continuing east and crossing the flood plain our route takes us along mule tracks and up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. Crossing the river we eventually come to the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims alike (although only Muslims are allowed to cross the stone bridge to visit the marabout shrine itself). The village sits beside a small waterfall, a jumbled cluster of houses that seem to melt together into an anarchic mass. From here the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snowline and the Toukbal Refuge (3206m), our stop for the night. Approx 5/6hrs walking.

🏚️ Hotel Option: Refuge du Toubkal or similar.

Day 2: Base Camp – Toubkal Summit – Imlil

Trek to the summit of Jebel Toubkal(4165m); return to Imlil Early this morning we make our attempt on the summit of Jebel Toukbal, the highest peak in Northern Africa. Our route takes us up the south cirque, crossing the stream above the refuge and then heading across one of the mountain’s numerous scree fields, where we will have to negotiable a seemingly endless carpet of boulders and rocks. The walking is relatively straightforward, but the scree and the altitude will make the going quite difficult in parts, however, the views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile. Cresting the ridgeline we find ourselves on the plateau, from where it is a short walk to the summit and the vistas out across the surrounding landscape are quite breathtaking. From here there are unrestricted views in every direction, from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north and as far south as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. Pliny, the great Roman scholar, once described the High Atlas Mountains as “the most fabulous mountains in all of Africa” and from our vantage point high above the valley, it is easy to understand why. Retracing our steps we then return down the mountain and head back towards Imlil – overnight in Dar Adrar or similar  (9 to 10hours walk total)

🏚️ Hotel Option: Riad Les Jardins du Toubkal Imlil or similar.

Day 3 : Imlil – Dades Valley

You will be picked up from your accommodation in Imlil at 9.00 am and head out over the Atlas Mountains, driving over the stunning Tizi-n-Tichka mountain pass. You’ll pass through lots of Berber villages, and once you’re in the desert, you’ll see riverside oases and barren hillsides dotted with kasbahs (fortified dwellings that house families and their livestock). Along the way, you will have the option either to take a break or visit the Ouarzazate Film Studios. A side trip is possible to Ait Benhaddou. This is an ancient fortified city containing countless kasbahs and has been the atmospheric subject of numerous Hollywood movies (The Mummy, Gladiator, Alexander, Lawrence of Arabia…) You will have the chance to walk around the buildings and explore with your guide. Once you reach Dades Gorge, you have the option of going for a hike or relaxing at your hotel. Overnight in Dades. (Total driving time  7/8hours)

🏚️ Hotel Option: Road Babylon Boumalne Dades or similar.

Day 4: Dades Valley – Todra gorge – Merzouga

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer from the Dades Valley to Todra Gorge – a massive fault dividing the High Atlas mountains, rising up 300 meters in a narrow valley with palmeries and Berber villages. Here, you can go for a hike to explore the Palmery, a green oasis full of large date palms. After lunch, you’ll head further into the desert to the gateway town of Merzouga to pick up supplies for your desert trip. You will then drive on to a kasbah to pick up your camel. At sunset, you’ll trek for an hour-and-a-half by camel to a Berber camp where you will enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner, and sleep under the stars or in tents at a desert camp. (Total driving time 6hours )

🏚️ Hotel Option: Berber Camp Merzouga or similar.

Day 5 : Merzouga – Marrakech

Wake up early, just prior to sunrise, we have a 1h30 camel ride at sunrise to explore the area further and we head back to Merzouga on our Camels. When we reach Merzouga, have to breakfast & have the opportunity to shower, and then we begin our journey through the stony desert and over the Atlas mountains, with plenty of stops for photos, exploring, and lunch as we return to Marrakech. The usual arrival time in Marrakech is between 17:00hrs and 18:00hrs. ( 10h drive)

It is an exotic hike out of the ordinary! We combine desert hiking in the golden Sahara with 1001 night magic in Marrakech. Morocco is the jewel of North Africa and we thrive in the colorful and friendly country.

sahara desert trek itinerary :

Today is the first day of our sahara desert trek. We eat early breakfast at our riad, before getting on the minibus and heading southeast towards the high Atlas Mountains. The drive goes over the Tizi’n Tichka pass. Here it’s beautiful! Mighty mountains, lush valleys and ocher-colored Berber villages as far as the eye can see. We stop for lunch just after the desert town of Ouarzazate. This is Morocco’s answer to Hollywood, with several major film studios.  We continue the trip over the Ait Saouné Pass and the long descent towards the famous Drâa Valley. We stop in the small town of Zagora where the great desert begins. Here we can buy Chach, the traditional headscarf. enjoy one last cold drink before we start the desert hike. We meet our priceless friends with camels for the coming week. camp at the foot of Mount Jebel Bani. Around 6h drive. 400km

We are woken up for early breakfast, and are ready for the great desert adventure. The team packs up the camp and the luggage is loaded on the camels. Then, we set off up into the gorge on Jebel Bani. We cross the pass and on to the rocky Faija plateau. We glimpse tamarin and acacia trees in the distance and it is here, in the shade. stop for lunch that our friends have conjured up. After a good break, we follow in parallel with the characteristic Saghro mountains further through the stone desert until we reach an oasis with tall date palms in the middle of all the dry. Here, we set up camp and can enjoy the afternoon exploring the local area. Maybe we’ll help gather firewood for tonight’s bonfire. We eat dinner in the tent. After that, we gather around a sparkling fire under the starry sky. 6 to 7h walk.

The day starts down a dry riverbed, a fascinating sight and it is easy to walk on the bare mountains. We follow the valley and eventually we have rock formations on both sides. Until now we have walked on rocks, stones and gravel, but gradually there is more and more sand and the terrain changes. We arrive at the camp in the early afternoon.  Here,  there are several opportunities for excursions up the ridge of Jbel Abbes. The chef dishes up a tasty dinner. However, if you are tempted, you can sleep outside in the open air and enjoy the stars until you fall asleep. 4 to 5h walk.

Day four: .

Today will be an intense day, as we will go both up and down, and you will feel that it is difficult to put one foot in front of the other in the dunes. After breakfast we leave the valley, and continue walking along the banks of a dry river and then throw ourselves further out on the plateau, before the large dunes of the Sahara desert. It begins with a large, rocky plateau just after we pass the El Abbes Pass. We have a huge panoramic view of the desert and now we can finally see the mighty Chegaga duvets. Later on, we follow a path used by nomads with camels, and it is a challenge to walk under the scorching sun. Under an acacia tree we find shade, eat lunch and relax. Furthermore, we continue from the rocky desert to the smooth, fascinating dunes. We accelerate in the sand and reach the amazing dunes of Chegaga! We go to the top of the duvets in what must be the world’s most beautiful sunset.   dinner in the camp and share the day’s experiences by the campfire. 6h walk.

We get up as soon as it gets light, and catch the sunrise from the top of the highest dune. The view is formidable. After breakfast we continue the hike in the beautiful Chegaga dunes and walk east of Jbel Abbes in the direction of M’hamid. However, It is difficult to walk in the dunes, so we continue on the plateau in the wide Drâa valley, and find the necessary shade under the tamarind trees. Besides, we have lunch and refill our water bottles. Then, we walk towards the large dunes of Bougarne. We go up and down in several small dunes and clusters of tamarind trees. The hike is tough, the boots are filled with sand and we sink into the sand as we walk. We are in wild and beautiful areas of the desert that are rarely visited, and at the largest of the Bougarn dunes we camp. The starry sky is huge above us and we relax around the fire with drums and singing. 7h walk.

The desert adventure in the Sahara is over.  After an early breakfast, we say goodbye to the camels and our good helpers. Then, we will be picked up from our camp by 4wd vehicles, and drive through a plateau till we get to the asphalted road. our mini bus is waiting for us. We get on the minibus and drive west through the Drâa Valley, on to exotic Ouarzazate, over the Tizi’n Tichka Pass. We have lunch along the way, and late in the afternoon we arrive at our riad in Marrakech. Finally, we enjoy a well-deserved shower. The rest of the evening is at your disposal. Around 7h drive. Thats the end of our sahara desert trek in Morocco.

If you want to experience a desert tour by vehicle , we have a 3 days desert trip from Marrakech .
