Our 16-day 5-stan tour was super organized. Everything worked out wonderfully. The only thing that caused us difficulties was the unofficial currency exchange rate in Turkmenistan. For this you need enough USD, because no credit cards work. Thank you for the great trip and the exciting impressions!

5 Days Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India(ALL INCLUSIVE) Tour

5 Days Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India(ALL INCLUSIVE)

I participated in the 5-day Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived in New Delhi, I was greeted with warm hospitality and excellent service from the tour company. The tour took us through the three most iconic cities of India - Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. Our knowledgeable guide provided us with in-depth historical and cultural information at each location, making the journey even more enriching. In Delhi, we visited iconic landmarks such as the Red Fort, India Gate, and Qutub Minar. The city is a perfect blend of old and new, and the bustling streets and colorful markets were a feast for the senses. Next, we headed to Agra to witness the majestic Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world. The beauty of this monument left me in awe and I was grateful to have the opportunity to see it in person. The tour also included a visit to the Agra Fort and the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, both of which were equally impressive. The last leg of the tour took us to Jaipur, also known as the 'Pink City'. The city was a delightful mix of stunning architecture, vibrant culture, and mouth-watering cuisine. The highlight of Jaipur was visiting the magnificent Amber Fort and the City Palace, both of which showcased the rich history and grandeur of the Rajput era. Throughout the tour, we stayed in comfortable and luxurious accommodations and the meals were delicious and authentic. The tour was truly all-inclusive, as all entrance fees, transportation, and meals were included in the package. Overall, this 5-day Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I was able to see some of the most iconic and breathtaking sights of India while learning about its rich history and culture. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the beauty of India in a short amount of time. The professionalism and expertise of the tour company made the journey smooth and enjoyable. Thank you for an unforgettable experience!

My husband and I have had the pleasure of using Karim as a tour guide. We have taken a trip through “Hunza Explorers” in Pakistan in December 2018. Karim is diligent, thorough and professional. His knowledge and expertise of traveling in Pakistan has been invaluable to us. He has always been on top of everything from the moment we presented him with our travel ideas. Karim is energetic and easy to work with. Karim has been at our constant disposal before and after our trip. Working with us on heritage tours of Pakistan, he helped make our trip memorable and great experience. We didn’t think it could get much better, but we just returned from a 3-week trip to Pakistan that Karim crafted and it was a trip of a lifetime. Everything ran like clockwork. Karim is now handcrafting our next trip to Hunza Pakistan this year and again He is right on target – we highly recommend Karim and Hunza Explorers for all of your travel needs.

What people love about historical tours.

With a guided tour, you can not control the weather or your travelling companions. I was lucky with both, so that helped! That aside, on my tour through the 5 Stans there were so many things that could have gone wrong. There were the 3 weeks in hotels, the three internal flights and the guides for each leg of the journey. It has to be said that all of this was well managed by Steppe Travels. The communication was great, the hotels were better than expected and all the guides were excellent. There were some long days of travelling, but the itinerary was well thought through and everything worked well. Overall, it was a great trip and Steppe Travel met all my requirements. I recommend them.

It was Budget Tour for Everyone. We are so happy with the 5 Days Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived in Delhi, I was greeted by the friendly and knowledgeable tour guide who made me feel right at home. The tour covered the three iconic cities of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, also known as the Golden Triangle. Each city had its own unique charm and history, making the tour a perfect blend of culture, history, and adventure. One of the highlights of the tour was visiting the magnificent Taj Mahal in Agra. Words cannot describe the beauty and grandeur of this iconic monument. The tour guide shared fascinating facts and stories about the Taj Mahal, making the experience even more enriching. In Delhi, I was able to explore the bustling streets of Old Delhi and visit popular landmarks such as the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. The city has a vibrant energy and the tour allowed me to immerse myself in its culture and traditions. Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, was a visual treat with its stunning architecture and colorful markets. The visit to the majestic Amber Fort was a highlight of the tour, with its intricate designs and breathtaking views of the city. The accommodations throughout the tour were top-notch and the food was delicious. I also appreciated that the tour was all-inclusive, so I didn't have to worry about any additional expenses. I recommend the 5 Days Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India to anyone looking to experience the rich history and culture of this beautiful country. The tour was well-organized, informative, and truly an unforgettable journey. I can't wait to visit India again and explore more of its wonders.

History Tours & Travel

History Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Many tours and small ship cruises have an element of history in their itineraries. However, some of the most historical places in the world — Rome, Athens, Angkor Wat , and Egypt, to name a few — lend history the focus of their trip for true history buffs.

You can find history tours and trip itineraries that specifically cater to history lovers. Some tour operators specialize in offering historical travel tours and offer many exciting activities for hands-on interactive exploration.

Things To Do on Historical Travel Tours

A history trip is a fascinating way to journey through time and explore the wonders of history with a dedicated, knowledgeable guide. You can explore ancient ruins, dig into the mysteries of the pyramids, bust the myths about medieval castles, or stroll through the cobblestone streets — there's something for everyone on our selection of historical travel adventures.

Going Beyond the Museum

For a truly immersive historical experience, it's far more interesting to trace the footsteps of ancient people and cultures than to stare at artifacts encased in glass. The pasts represented by said artifacts come alive after experiencing the history outside the museum walls.

Luckily, the definition of a museum has evolved in recent years. Many are outdoors, follow a specific theme, and are more interactive than they used to be.

For example, a museum in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to hats! And, believe it or not, there's a museum in France dedicated to vampires.

There are so many avenues through which you can get a sense of culture and history; your history trips will hit many of them. Food, art, architecture, clothing, and even water sources all shape the history of people and places. The information you learn on a historical vacation will significantly enhance your appreciation of history.

Interactive History Tours

Discover how ancient people used to build their dwellings, savor the taste of historical cuisine of the Victorian era, learn to dance traditional folk dances or trace the footsteps of famous authors and artists.

No matter where you're traveling, interactive history tours provide an exciting link to the past for culture explorers . Especially if you're traveling with keen learners like children, activities where "history comes alive" are an absolute pleasure and are often included on history and not-history-specific tours.

Temples, Ruins, and Castles

From the spectacular Angkor Wat temple to the proudly standing ruins of the Forum in Rome and every anglophile's dream at Lancaster Castle in the UK , history tours will undoubtedly showcase impressive architecture.

Whether they still exist intact or are mere skeletons of their former glory, buildings such as these are always engaging and interesting to visit, especially for travelers aged 18 to 30 and 50+ . They also offer spectacular photo opportunities!

What our customers say .

" Anne Boleyn Experience Tour----As someone who has been following this tour for years before i could go, as well as checking photos, talking to past participants etc., I can say with all sincerity that the entire tour experience exceeded all my expectations. Philippa puts together a tour of learning, luxury and of course consistent fun. She patiently answers any questions and concerns in the months before the tour and once the tour starts ensures each guest gets the most out of the events. The tour was the among the best experiences of my life and I am definitely planning on going again. "

"Philippa and BHT never disappoint! Our Progress tour had particular challenges because it coincided with the national mourning for Queen Elizabeth II. But Philippa took care of the glitches like the pro she is and again delivered an amazing experience. This is my 3rd tour and I’m signed up for #4 in 2023. Very well done!"

" I had the most amazing experience with Philippa and British History Tours. The time spent learning more about Tudor life, staying at Hever Castle, and our private tours were very special. Gareth Russell (author and historian) was on our tour as well, and we all appreciated his knowledge about the Tudors and especially Queen Anne Boleyn. I would definitely go on another tour with this company. "

"My wife & I have just completed the On Progress with Anne Boleyn tour. We cannot recommend Philippa & British History Tours highly enough! My wife is a Tudor tragic & she was mesmerised with everything that we saw & experienced. A highlight was dressing in Tudor costume for a day - truly a memory to treasure."

"Recently returned from the “Life & Times of Elizabeth I” tour which was my second this year. (I was also on the Anne Boleyn tour in May - both had been postponed from Covid times.) I wish we could clone Phillipa the Tour Manager and Gareth the Tour Historian and station them at every corner of the world to lead tours because I travel a lot and these have been best I’ve ever experienced. Every tour detail was meticulously arranged by Phillipa, and she was not an absentee host, she was there with us every step of the way. She included thoughtful touches like timing the Anne Boleyn tour to be at Hever on May 19, or the Elizabeth tour at Kenilworth in July. Literally every aspect: the luxury accommodations, transportation on a dedicated bus, meal arrangements including special diets, and the private “behind the scenes” tours and speakers were first rate. And what speakers they were! All noted historians and authors speaking on their specialties with insights into the places we were visiting. These were real experts, not scripted entertainers. Having Gareth along for the whole trip, adding colorful commentary and answering our questions made it extra special. He was so approachable, and he had a way of making the history interesting and relevant while gently nudging us to consider the context and customs of the people we were hearing about. Overall fabulous tours. Highly recommended and I will be seeking them out again."

" I've taken two British History Tours. Ms Brewell has a co-host for each tour as the historian. I do recommend anyone interested in British History look into taking one of British History Tours.

Civil War Tour: Mississippi River Campaign

Thank you and your team for a great holiday discovering the complexities of the Civil War and of the South. A great deal of effort must have gone into planning the tour, with splendid hotels and restaurants and, of course, very erudite guides to take us through every interesting step of the battle zones.

– Jack and Nancy

The Civil War: Mississippi River Campaign Tour visits the sites and battlefields fought along the Mississippi River, including Memphis, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Port Hudson and New Orleans. This tour was inspired by Stephen Ambrose’s books, Upton and the Army  and  A Wisconsin Boy in Dixie , as well as Struggle for Vicksburg , a short battlefield guide that Ambrose boasted sold more copies than any of his bestsellers. Ambrose revered the Mississippi River as the great artery of national commerce. In his view, Federal forces would never rest until the mighty Mississippi flowed “unvexed to the sea” again following the seizure by the Confederates of this great American waterway.

Ambrose also recognized the primary significance of the rail lines as the links that tied the Confederacy together from east to west. Connecting the Gulf of Mexico to Kentucky, the rails were the sinews of the rebellion—and the cords of Union that Federal armies must control to win the war. As a Yankee who moved to New Orleans, Ambrose always appreciated the South, the food, music, architecture and society. In addition to studying the tactics of battle, the logistics of war and the clash of opposing forces, this tour is also designed to reveal something of the great American way of life that thrives below the Mason Dixon line.

User reviews rating score:

Memphis: Review the naval battles of the war, specifically the campaign that led to Federal control of the river

Shiloh: Visit the beautifully preserved battlefield that shows the bloody struggle that happened in April 1862

Corinth: Study the siege and battle that gave the Union control over the railroads that linked the Confederacy, providing the base for General Ulysses Grant to launch the Vicksburg Campaign

Vicksburg and Port Hudson: Learn about the sieges and battles that restored control of the river to the Union

The Natchez Trace: View glorious vistas and learn the Native origins of one of the oldest trade routes in the continental USA

Natchez: Explore a city that was spared from devastation during the Civil War, a showpiece of antebellum architecture and society

New Orleans: Visit the historic French Quarter, tour antebellum neighborhoods and experience the Creole lifestyle in one of the most diverse of old world-style American cities

Day-By-Day Itinerary

Day 1 memphis.

Your group will meet at the hotel for a welcome reception, introductions all around, and an overview of the tour; the campaigns that restored control of the Mississippi River to the USA.

DAY 2 Corinth

You will start with a brief visit to Confederate Park in Memphis on the Mississippi River where a naval battle fought here on June 6, 1862 resulted in a crushing defeat for the Confederates.

After traveling by late morning to Shiloh National Military Park, you will analyze the two days of bloody battle that raged at Shiloh until the Confederates finally withdrew from the field without result.

You will overnight in Corinth, Mississippi.

DAY 3 Tupelo

In the spring of 1862, the initial Union objective was the vital rail link at Corinth that connected the western Confederacy to its Atlantic states and also linked the South from the Gulf of Mexico to the border states. After a lengthy siege in April and the bloody battle called Second Corinth that lasted for two days in October, the Union achieved its objective of capturing this crossroads town. The victory here for the USA opened the door for the Vicksburg Campaign.

Your morning will begin with a tour of historic Corinth and the antebellum homes that quartered generals from both sides during the Civil War. You will spend the rest of the morning, visiting the Civil War Interpretive Center, Crossroads Museum, and Corinth Contraband Camp. You will also view the redoubts where the battle itself and its related skirmishes happened in the autumn of 1862.

In the afternoon, you will pass by Brice's Crossroads, the site of a much-later clash between Confederate troops under General Nathan Bedford Forrest (the post-war founder of the Ku Klux Klan) and the Union Cavalry under General Samuel D. Sturgis. Stopping here, you will learn how Forrest craftily routed the Union forces, though his Confederates were outnumbered nearly two to one.

DAY 4 Vicksburg

You will start your study of the Vicksburg Campaign at the remote site on the east bank of the Mississippi River near Bruinsburg where General Grant and his troops landed following their amphibious river crossing and started to march towards Vicksburg in April 1862. Two hundred yards from where they started to march on the eastern side of the river, you will visit Windsor Ruins, the magnificent remains of a plantation home that Grant and his troops moved past as they searched out Confederate forces. You will also visit Port Gibson, a site ten miles from Grant's crossing, where the first engagement in the Vicksburg Campaign took place.

Overnight in Vicksburg.

DAY 5 Vicksburg

Vicksburg National Military Park is the vast and hallowed ground where the maneuvering and struggle for control of the Mississippi could occupy a scholar for several days, or even a lifetime. Your tour dedicates a day to this landmark battle. You will explore the park and study the way the two sides fought there. You will view evidence of the grueling siege at this Confederate stronghold and you will finish the day with a visit to the USS Cairo, the US gunboat sunk by a Confederate torpedo in the Yazoo River.

DAY 6 Natchez

Your visits will begin in the morning at the Old Courthouse Museum in Vicksburg with its eclectic collection of artifacts from the Civil War. You will also see the riverfront and the murals that line the flood wall and depict the history of Vicksburg.

Proceeding south to the city of Natchez, you will travel some of the way on the historic Natchez Trace. The Trace was the primary wilderness road in the Old Southwest, and it remains a scenic parkway today. In Natchez, you will tour a town that avoided destruction in the Civil War, and thus remains steeped in history, one of the most well-preserved cities of the Old South.

DAY 7 New Orleans

Embarking downriver, you will travel to Port Hudson, Louisiana. The next Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi, just south of Vicksburg, Port Hudson was the site of a 48-day siege in 1863. The bluffs at Port Hudson still present the first high ground upstream from Baton Rouge, and the Confederates constructed a line of earthworks there. The rebels also positioned batteries to defend the river at this point.

Port Hudson presented a critical trade junction where another artery for supplies from Texas to the rest of the Confederacy, the Red River flows into the Mississippi. Like Vicksburg, both sides fought bitterly for the strategic jewel. After touring the bucolic and rolling fields of battle at Port Hudson and the area of the siege, you will continue south to the great city of New Orleans.

In the afternoon, you will tour the grand neighborhoods of Uptown, including the Garden District, and the home where the Confederate president, Jefferson Davis, lived out his life and died.

You will enjoy a Farewell Dinner in the evening.

DAY 8 New Orleans

Starting the day with a short walking tour of the world-famous French Quarter, you will visit the Confederate Memorial Hall Museum before lunch. The oldest museum in Louisiana, the Memorial Hall holds one of the largest collections of Confederate memorabilia in the country.

For the remainder of the afternoon, you can explore New Orleans as you please. Some of the extraordinary sites to consider include The National WWII Museum, located across the street from the Confederate Museum; Chalmette Battlefield, where Jackson fought the Battle of New Orleans; and the many beautiful parks and neighborhoods, art galleries, antique stores, and restaurants.

DAY 9 New Orleans

The tour ends with check out and transfers to the New Orleans airport (MSY). If you are interested in extra nights post-tour in New Orleans, we are happy to pass along the hotel's group rate to you.

Mississippi Campaign Tour

The Mississippi Campaign Tour was very enjoyable. Mark Bielski (tour leader), Parker Hills (Vicksburg guide) were the highlights. I would highly recommend this tour.

It could be improved by adding Fort Donaldson and dropping the antebellum house tour. People sign up for the Civil War information, and the way people lived in that era is covered better by many other alternatives people can sign up for if interested.

CIVIL WAR -- MISSISSIPPI RIVER CAMPAIGN

We were well pleased with the content and pace of this tour. Mark Bielski, Parker Hills, and others gave understandable insight and descriptions of events to tie in with the actual sights and prior readings. Natchez and New Orleans balanced the trip. Restaurant and hotel selections were great!

The inclusion of Fort Donelson and NOLA Chalmette Battlefield (we did on our own) would have been nice, but we realize there’s only so much time available.

Mississippi Civil War Tour

Doing this tour while still fighting a pandemic was undoubtedly difficult. A few details probably suffered, but the knowledge given was first rate. This side of the Civil War was not taught in school, despite being vitally important. We learned so much. A small detail (I haven’t seen a better place to post), the tour would benefit from the purchase of personal earphones/microphones like we have had in oversea trips. It was hard to hear in New Orleans and along the mural levee, which has trucks sharing the space. Still, very happy we experienced. Thanks so much.

Thanks for everything

This is to thank you and your team for a great holiday discovering the complexities of the Civil War and of the South. We thoroughly enjoyed our long chats with Marina and on the last night meeting up with Terri, both of whom are delightful ladies.

A great deal of effort must have gone into planning the tour, with splendid hotels and restaurants and, of course, very erudite guides to take us through every interesting step of the battle zones. Your choice of lunch stops like the one with the singing restaurateur provided a fascinating insight of life in the south and of its food.

We also had a most agreeable group of people to spend a holiday with. You spared no effort to give us a memorable holiday. Now I am starting to enjoy Sons of the White Eagle .

Thanks for everything.

Good mixture

Good mixture of battlefields and museums. Quirky lunch stops were a fun surprise.

Moving experience

The tour was more than I had expected. It was a moving experience to actually walk the ground and have the battles, events and sites explained in a clear and understandable manner. I would highly recommend that any of my Civil War buff friends take advantage of your company.

Very pleased

I thought the level of military and general information was exactly what I was looking for. I was very pleased with the content of the tour.

Our 1st day we concentrated on the many iconic sights of Midtown Manhattan, including inside the Empire State Building, NY City Library, Grand Central, Rockefeller Center, and many more including hidden gems along the way – all fantastic!!!

Amazing tour! We were fascinated the entire time. We ran into another of their guides while we were out and about – equally kind and gracious. We will definitely schedule some of their other tours next time we are in NYC.

Highly recommend the Gilded Age tour. Learned so much about a neighborhood I thought I knew so well. A great way to rediscover a city you love.

I gave my husband a private Gilded Age tour as a Christmas gift and we went on our anniversary in mid-January.  Quite honestly the tour was so interesting, that the weather didn’t distract us. We’ve both lived and worked in New York City so are very familiar with the city, but we learned so much!
