How To Spend 72 Hours in Seoul

Bundle the video game-glow of Tokyo , food scene of Singapore and English-speaking streets of Hong Kong , stretch it out over a sprawl of skyscrapers and village-style neighborhoods and cram in more than a fair share of fantastic shopping, and you get Seoul. Though this city of 16 million has been in the shadow of its Japanese counterpart for decades, Seoul is (finally!) emerging as a destination on its own merits. Beauty tourism has boomed since 2015, Korean BBQ as a food trend is to this decade what sushi was to the nineties, and a little ditty you may have heard of popularized the, erm, 'Gangnam style' now embraced by fashionistas world-wide. Yet within this modern city lie serene pockets of palaces and temples that recall the important history of the Korean peninsula stretching back 700 years. There is a lot to take in for sure (you'll thank the travel gods for the quick, clean subway system) and it'll be a challenge. But you can do a lot of it in three days. You just need to know how.

Bright Lights, Late Shopping and the Best Views in Town

Don’t worry about jet lag: Seoul is bright, fast, buzzing and literally never sleeps; its stretches of glowing neon signs and cacophonous, day-to-night markets will keep you charged from the minute you touch down (and if you start to crash, one of the city’s trademark day spas is never far). Catch the 45 minute express train in from Incheon Airport , drop your bags inside the spanking new Le Meridien , which opened last year with 336 art-filled rooms in trendy Gangnam , and hop on the subway north to Dongdaemun .

Named for the 14th-century fortress gate that once marked Seoul’s eastern fringe (it’s now smack in the middle of town thanks to urban expansion) this commercial district captures the dichotomy of old and new with its modern architecture, traditional markets, and glass-walled shopping centers. Our pick is Doota , which sells hand-made dresses from Seoul label Lang and Lu and doesn’t close till 5 a.m.—awesome for a late night spree after shooting soju at the 113-year-old Dongdaemun Market nearby. A short stroll away, Zaha Hadid’s futuristic Dondaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is worth a couple hours of your time. Sign up for a guided tour, which will take you through the area’s on-site history museum, or just wander the seven levels at your own speed: You'll find an exhibition space dedicated to Korean product design and a market selling accessories and clothing, though the real draw is the building itself, which Hadid designed free of angles and straight lines.

The subway stop is right outside DDP, so head a few stops south to the riverside Hannam neighborhood, filled with cafes, shops and Seoul’s stylish millennials sipping cappuccinos, just in time for lunch. Tartine Seoul opened here a few weeks back and already has a cult-like following for its Momofuku -inspired ‘crack’ pies. (Though we are partial to the steamy bowls of buda jjigae —a sausage, kimchi and ramen soup popularized after the Korean war—from the simple Bada Sikdang.) Then spend an hour or so wandering Hannam’s serpentine-like alleyways, popping into boutiques like Beaker , a Korean Barney’s Co-op, and Article for leather totes and wallets. Do your wandering in the northwest direction, toward the Itaewon neighborhood, a favorite for 20 somethings due to its bar scene until you find the sleek Leeum museum, where oil canvases by Francis Bacon hang alongside paintings by modern Korean masters like Park-Seo Kewn and native pottery from the 13th century. If sunset’s approaching as you exit, take the cable car to the 870-foot summit of nearby Namsan hill to catch panoramic views over the city. Or just hit up Itaewon’s Côté Jardin for a glass of Bordeaux (you’ve earned it) before tucking into beef tartare bibimbap at bistro Jangkkoma ; the plating is so pretty, you're sure to post it to Instagram.

Palaces, Temples, and the Souvenirs to Take Home with You

Considering Seoul’s influence on pop-culture, it's easy to de-prioritize the more historical facets of the city in favor of spa visits, galbi , and shopping. But you should dedicate a day to exploring its palaces and temples, many of which are in the middle of town, accessible by subway, and within walking distance of each other.

A slower-paced Seoul greets you at Anguk subway station near Changdeokgung Palace , surrounded by low-slung, traditional wooden homes. It’s an appropriate start to the day ahead. Follow the signs north to the palace, which was built in 1405 and is one of the most important pieces of architecture preserved from Korea’s Josean dynasty. You’ll know you are close by the palace guards dressed in beautiful crimson and jade hanbok , the traditional costume—time your arrival right and you’ll catch the ceremonial changing of the guard on horseback (just don't get that Dunkin' Donuts across the street in your photo, it totally kills the vibe). Then explore the ponds and residential villas of the palace on your own, or join a group; English language tours go every morning at 10.15 a.m. A 15 minutes stroll west, Gyeongbokgung Palace is the largest in Seoul; its Gyeonghoeru pavilion remains nearly exactly as it was when it was built back in 1395. Just note that Changdeokgung is closed on Tuesdays and Gyeongbokgung on Mondays, so plan appropriately if you want to hit both.

Moving east along Yulgok Ro (you’ll know you’re headed in the right direction if you pass Anguk Station), you’ll hit Insadong , the best place in town for historic food and art. It’s tempting to dart straight into the tight lanes off the main road, lined with tiny storefronts brimming with paper and ceramics, but hold off on the shopping until after lunch. Opt for the japchae (glass noddles) at Jirisan , inside a former home done in the traditional Hanuk style with one modern caveat: a glass ceiling that warms the simple, blond wood interiors.

Think of Insadong as the equivalent to Paris's Montemarte —loaded with charm and creativity, rooted in history. It’s Seoul’s bohemian district, and it's said that 40 percent of all crafts produced in South Korea are exchanged here; pick up clay kimchi pots and hand-stitched slippers to bring home, though our souvenir is always hanji , the delicate Korean paper made from mulberry wood that comes either blank or with prints of traditional Korean street scenes. Once you’ve blown through all your won, stop off at the 620 year-old Jongyesa Buddhist temple en route back to the subway. It’s green and pink-window shudders carved into the shape of native trees, give the temple provenance. If you want to take a breather before leaving Insadong, the tiny Tapgol park has plenty of bench space and monuments dating back to the 15th century.

Temples, Spa Palaces and the Beauties Who Love Them

For every blinged-out boulevard in Gangnam, there’s a quiet temple to make this neighborhood a microcosm of Seoul itself. Do brunch at Le Meridien, (though if you wanted to get a jump start on the day, head south to Yangjae Citizens Park to stroll with locals before they dart off to work) then hit the road. You could burrow deep underground in Coex, Asia’s largest subterranean mall where over one thousand shops carry international and local labels. But we think the first stop should be the concept store Boon the Shop , which trend setters around the globe say is on par with Milan ’s 10 Corso Como or Colette in Paris (no small feat in the style world). If you want to pick up Korean cosmetics (and trust us, you do—the quality and price is unbeatable) head around the corner to Jung Saem Mool , Seoul’s answer to Bobbi Brown. We always pick up her lip stains and concealers.

Southwest along leafy boulevards you’ll come to Bongeunsa Buddhist Temple . Take an hour or so to regroup here; the temple’s tea ceremonies between visitors and monks is especially worthwhile, and a complete counter to the espresso houses all over Gangnam. Next door, the pork belly BBQ at Black Pig with mung beans and kimchi is a solid lunch.

Once you've refueled, do Gangnam's most beloved retail street, Garosu-gil. It’s the closest thing to Soho you’ll find in Seoul (right down to gentrification: pricey boutiques kicked out the artists and galleries which made this area popular in the 80s). We love it for the people watching at hot spots like Queenmama Market as much as we do the beauty tourism. Sulwhasoo is our go-to for creams and facials, and stock pile sheet masks at 11 Village Factory before sitting down to a foot bath on the store’s top floor. After three days dashing round town, the bath is both indulgence and necessity.

Like many parts of Seoul, Gangnam has plenty of  pojangmacha , those ubiquitous and rowdy tent bars that pop up on the sidewalks as the sun goes down. Have your first drink of the evening inside Gangnam’s Hanshin Pocha and make it an Orion lager, paired with plate of Korean fried chicken if you fancy. If you can peel away from your table (in true Korean fashion, your seat mate will likely insist on buying you a few more Orions before you go), head across to Cheongdam-dong and settle in for the night. Speakeasies like Alice serve Darjeeling tea and vodka with vanilla smoke. Even if you push to stay out as late as you can, we guarantee the locals will still be pounding Jack Daniels and soju when you finally do leave. No one in Asia outdrinks the Koreans. That’s a fact.

The comedian made headlines in April 2024 after he announced that he is set to tie the knot with his girlfriend in October. Cho's girlfriend is later revealed to be nine years younger than him, with both of them falling in love over their mutual interest in fashion.

BamBam (whose real name is Kunpimook Bhuwakul) is a notable member of the K-pop group, GOT7. 

The Thai rapper and singer launched a solo career after releasing his EP (extended play) titled "Ribbon" in June 2021. 

BamBam then released his first studio album, Sour & Sweet , in March 2023, leading to his first world tour from September to November in several countries This saw him travel to South Korea, the Philippines, China, Vietnam, and his home country, Thailand.

Mimi (Kim Mi Hyun) is one of the leading members of the K-pop girl group, Oh My Girl, serving as its main rapper. 

Oh My Girl is best known for their songs like "Dun Dun Dance," "Dolphin," "Secret Garden," and "Closer."

Aren Yoo (Yoo He-ra) is Korea's client ambassador. 

As a client ambassador, Yoo (25) acts as "the bridge that links clients to brands." 

Yoo proudly shares in the confessional that her dressing room is bigger than her bedroom, mainly due to her interest in fashion. She said, "Pretty clothes make up 99% of [her] life."

In Super Rich in Korea Episode 1 , Yoo reveals that she only wears her clothes once to truly make an impact. Aside from being wealthy, Yoo wants the world to think of her when talking about fashion. 

She is currently studying hotel management at Cornell University, an Ivy League University in New York. 

Yoo says that she wants to bring the biggest American fashion shows and host them in South Korea.

David Yong is part of Singapore's Top 1% Super Rich. 

The 37-year-old CEO of Evergreen Group Holdings owns a private jet, a villa house in Singapore complete with a swimming pool and an elevator, and 11 elegant cars. 

David graduated from Bristol University in the United Kingdom. Aside from being the CEO, he is also a lawyer by training and the first son of a timber conglomerate in Asia. 

David came to Korea three years ago to start K-content investment due to his love and interest in K-pop. He hopes to serve as an important bridge in making Korean entertainment global.

Teodoro Marani

Teodoro Marani is an Italian entrepreneur who has been living in Seoul for three years. Teodoro's parents are the CEOs of Henry Beguelin, an Italian luxury fashion brand. 

Teodoro is also the founder of Loop Innovators, a luxury food and beverage trading company, and a part-time chef who holds cooking classes for the VIP members of Hyundai. 

Despite having rich parents, he receives no financial support from them, noting in the confessional that he wants to be financially independent.

Noor Naim, also known as Noor Stars, is an Iraqi-American living in Dubai. 

She is a content creator and a businessman known for being one of the top creators in the Middle East. Noor has over 50 million subscribers combined on her social media platforms.

Noor, 26, made history by having the first channel in the Middle East and North Africa to receive a Diamond Play button from YouTube (for reaching 10 million subscribers). She is also the first Arab woman to create content in Arabic. 

Noor collects bags, noting in Episode 1 that she "cares a lot" about them. 

She also loves Korea and she is currently working to get a house "because [her] soul is in Seoul."

Anna Kim was born in Pakistan, but she has a Korean nationality (which she achieved 10 years ago). 

Anna's husband, Malik, hails from a royal family in Pakistan, making her a noblewoman. 

She reveals that she has a home, a vacation home in Lahore, and a manor in Pakistan. Anna even has a pet lion and tiger in her home country.

What is the DMZ – Demilitarized Zone

The DMZ is the area surrounding the Demarcation Line (DML), which separates North and South Korea. About a half-century ago, the DML was drawn to keep the two countries physically separated.

This border came about from the need for peace between the two countries after the prolonged military and political tension. The DMZ is 250 kilometres long with a four-kilometre diameter.

North Korea is famous for being mysterious and very hard to visit. Our DMZ tours will allow you to get as close to the infamous country as possible and even look across the border!

What is the JSA – Joint Security Area

The JSA (Joint Security Area) is a shared space between North and South Korea. Here the two countries can coexist with the help of the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission (UNCMAC). This is the only place where South and North Korean forces stand face to face – a sight not to be missed!

The former village (Panmunjeom) sits just 60 kilometres northwest of Seoul and was initially called “Neolmun-ri.” The area is rectangular, with a size of 400×800 meters and is set up on the Military Demarcation Line, essentially making it neutral ground.

Here, you will find various buildings that accommodate negotiation talks and a few bridges of great historical importance.

JSA tour Regulations and Restrictions

The JSA is a unique area due to its purpose – to preserve peace, and therefore the United Nations Command (UNC) have some strict regulations to bear in mind.

Everyone wishing to visit must supply their passport and register at least 7 days in advance. We, therefore, request a full-colour copy of your passport page when booking. All members of your group should be at least 12 years old, and those younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

In addition, the UNC limits the number of people that can visit daily. This limit means it can get booked up very quickly.

If you wish to avoid the restrictions and ensure there is enough space, we suggest you book our DMZ Half Day Tour . This way, you will still see everything there is to see at the DMZ but will not have to deal with pre-registration and limitations.

What to expect on our DMZ JSA tour – key features

Our tour has a very well-organized itinerary that makes sure you don’t miss a beat and are as comfortable as possible. Our pickup and drop-off location is City Hall Subway Station (Exit 6), a central and easily accessible location in Seoul to start and end the day.

Imjingak – a spiritual place for mourning

Sitting 53 kilometres northwest of Seoul, Imjingak is where South Koreans come to mourn their lost ancestors who have fallen in the Korean War.

This ritual happens on every Lunar New Year’s Day. It aims to comfort about ten million people who pay respects to their families lost in the North.

The Bridge of Freedom – crying “Hurrah!”

Until 1998, the Bridge of Freedom was the only direct link to Camp Greaves, Liberty Bell, and Panmunjeom.

According to the history books from the war period, about 13,000 captives crossed the bridge yelling “Hurrah!” for freedom, which gave this structure its name.

Feel the spirit of exaltation as the war has come to an end at this historic place on our DMZ JSA tour.

The Third Tunnel of Aggression – crawling through time

This hidden tunnel was discovered in October of 1978. Resembling Tunnel II, which both the North and South knew about, this one was secret! The tunnel’s location lies just 4 kilometres away from Truce Village (Panmunjeom).

The measurements of the tunnel are 1,635 kilometres long, 1.95 meters high, and 2.1 meters wide. It was made big enough to move an entire division per hour and was clearly built for a surprise attack on Seoul! So on our DMZ and JSA tour, we will have the chance to go inside and see the secret tunnel for ourselves!

DMZ Theater and Exhibition Hall – an organised look into past events

If you’d like to track the events of the Korean War and see a significant amount of evidence, you would love the DMZ Theater and Exhibition Hall. Here, you can expect to see leaflets, bayonets, military letters, pottery, and empty cartridges.

These objects will give you an idea of what life was like during this challenging period and will transport you back in time.

Dora Observatory – see across the border inside North Korea

Due to stringent regulations, we aren’t allowed to go into North Korea, so instead, we make sure to get you as close as possible so you can have a look at the mysterious country! Dora Observatory is the closest point to North Korea.

Dorasan Station – the railway connecting North and South

Unification Bridge – the idea of peace is manifested

The Unification Bridge (Tongildaegyo) started as an idea of unification. It was built symbolically in 1998 by the Hyundai Business Group of South Korea and towers over the Imjingang River, which flows from North Korea.

The bridge got a peculiar nickname – “Cow Bridge.” This is because of the founder of Hyundai, Mr Jung Juyoung, who crossed the bridge going to North Korea in 1998, bringing 1001 cows.

Camp Bonifas – remembering a hero

Camp Bonifas is a military post that belongs to the United Nations. The site was previously known as “Kitty Hawk”, but on August 18, 1986, the name was changed to honour Captain Arthur G. Bonifas. The American captain was killed in the “axe murder incident”, so the camp was dedicated to him posthumously.

We will visit this camp during our DMZ and JSA tour. Here you will receive a briefing and watch a slide show from UN military personnel before visiting Joint Security Area.

Freedom House – a safe space for peace talks

The Freedom House is located on the south side of the JSA and was finished in July of 1998. The building has a modern design and four floors. It serves as the home to the “South and North Liaison Office” and “South and North Red Cross Liaison Office.”

This space aims to provide a safe zone for discussion, inter-Korean dialogues, and cultural exchanges aimed at peace.

Military Armistice Commission Conference Room – enforcing the historic agreement

The United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission (UNCMAC) was assembled in July 1953 at the end of the Korean War. Its goal is to ensure that peace is maintained and that the Korean Armistice Agreement is strictly enforced.

The conference room is where it meets. The North and South take turns using the conference rooms in the JSA, which have doors on both ends to ensure privacy and equal access.

Inter-Korean Peace House – leaving military matters aside

The Peace House was completed on December 19, 1969. It is used for talks that have nothing to do with the government or the military and is located 130 metres south of Freedom House.

This building was first constructed in 1980 when the two countries’ prime ministers needed a neutral place to meet and have a dialogue. It was later rebuilt in 1989 and is still used to this day.

Tongilgak (Unification Pavilion) – the hidden office

Tongilgak is a conference hall on the northern side of the JSA that has a similar function to the Peace House. It has mainly been used to house North Korea’s “South and North Liaison Office”, which has been the case since May 1992.

This is where various inter-Korean talks have taken place. Similar to the mysterious image of North Korea, this building is not easily visible. It’s located 100 meters northwest of Panmungak, and you need to actively look for it to see it!

Panmungak (Phanmun Pavilion) – a place for propaganda

Panmungak’s role in the Joint Security Area is to represent North Korea. The building was first constructed on September 2, 1969, and is where North Korean officials have their offices. The building also serves as the waiting room for UN officials who want to have a dialogue with North Korea.

The curious fact about Panmungak is that propaganda efforts take place here. The North is famous for its efforts to promote propaganda information against South Korea. One such example is the “Pan-Korean Convention” that happens every 5th of August. Moreover, this building was completely closed off to the North Korean public until 1964.

The Bridge of No Return – a place marked by a shocking event

You may recognise this bridge from the popular James Bond movie “Die Another Day”. This is also the bridge where the famous “axe murder incident” happened on August 18, 1976. The bridge became infamous as the spot where General Arthur Bonifas and First Lieutenant Mark Bennett were killed.

However, the original purpose of this bridge, which gave it its name, was to be a place where POWs (prisoners of war) were exchanged. Once a prisoner chose the country he wanted to go to, there was no coming back, hence the bridge of “no return”. Don’t miss the chance to see this tense and historically rich place on our DMZ JSA tour!

The Bridge of 72 Hours – a desperate need for access by North Korea

After the “axe murder incident” happened, the Bridge of No Return was shut down and was no longer in use. That meant that North Korea lost its access to the JSA. Shocked and desperate, the government decided to build a new one.

This is how the Bridge of 72 Hours appeared. It only took 72 hours for its completion, which was a massive effort on behalf of the North. This bridge connects Panmunjeom and the city of Kaesong to the north.

Wow, all I can say is do this JSA tour if you possibly can. I did the normal DMZ tour which was great, but then did this JSA tour – it was fantastic and takes you even closer to the frontline and actually inside the DMZ itself to the JSA. Our guide Nancy was quite amazing and brilliant. I have done many great tours around the world – this is up there amongst the very best.

So glad I booked this tour. Knew I wanted to do it after doing some research before arriving in Korea. I booked early after reading that this tour is difficult to get on dude to all the restrictions and military / political events. Found myself on a bus full of people from all different places. Some people on the bus could only do the first part of the tour because they didn’t book early enough, so be sure to book as early as you can!
