Five-Time LPGA Tour Winner Lilia Vu Clinches Spot on U.S. Solheim Cup Team

Lilia Vu

Five-time LPGA Tour winner Lilia Vu has mathematically clinched a spot on the 2024 U.S. Solheim Cup Team.

After finishing in a tie for second at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the 26-year-old has racked up 1,932.50 total points throughout the Qualifying Period, which began at the 2023 Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions and will run through the final day of the AIG Women’s Open on Aug. 25.

Vu has earned five LPGA Tour victories in that span, becoming a Rolex First-Time Winner at the Honda LPGA Thailand in 2023 and then capturing her first major title at The Chevron Championship not long after in April. The Epson Tour graduate won another major championship at the AIG Women’s Open at Walton Heath Golf Club, collecting one more 2023 title in November at The ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican.

Her four victories not only propelled Vu to Rolex Player of the Year honors and the Rolex ANNIKA Major Award; they also qualified Vu for her first U.S. Solheim Cup Team. She earned a 1-3-0 record at Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain, winning her singles match over Madelene Sagstrom to nab a point for the Americans, who went on to tie the Europeans for the first time in Solheim Cup history.

The 2024 LPGA Tour season has seen Vu struggle with a lingering back injury, discomfort that caused her to withdraw from her title defense at The Chevron Championship and take a much-needed two-month hiatus to rest and recover.

Then in her first start back on Tour at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give , Vu showed no signs of rust, winning the event after emerging victorious from a three-hole playoff with Grace Kim and Lexi Thompson.

“I just couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe I won this week,” said Vu after her win in Michigan. “I was setting my bar really low so that I could meet it. I think because I tend to get in my own way when I'm trying to win, that's when I don't win most of the time, so just trying to stay in my lane, take advantage of all the good shots and make all the birdie putts that I get.”

Even though she has been dealing with injury, U.S. Solheim Cup Captain Stacy Lewis knows that having an experienced and healthy Vu tee it up at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in September will be a major asset for the Red, White and Blue.

“Coming off last year, when Lilia had an unbelievable year, it was just a matter of time for her to make the team,” said Lewis. “This year, not getting started the way she would have liked and having to deal with her injury definitely set her back for a bit. It’s been very exciting to see how she’s played the last two starts, coming out of the injury with her win and really just picking up where she left off.

“She’s a tremendous player, from ball striking to putting with a true all-around game. We’re excited to have her back for her second Solheim Cup, with an opportunity to step up and become a leader on this team.”

Vu is the second U.S. player to clinch a spot on the 2024 team, joining Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1 Nelly Korda, who secured her spot on the squad a couple of weeks ago, following the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer.

The 19th edition of the Solheim Cup will be held at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va., from September 13-15. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit https://www.solheimcupusa.com/overview .

LPGA Tour star Charley Hull forced out of Aramco Team Series London after 'nasty fall'

England's Charley Hull has been forced to withdraw from the Aramco Team Series presented by PIF - London.

lpga satellite tour

Charley Hull has revealed she was forced to withdraw from this week's Aramco Team Series presented by PIF – London due to a shoulder injury.

Hull , 28, withdrew from the Ladies European Tour event on Tuesday morning on medical grounds after consultation with a physiotherapist.

The World No.8 walked out of Centurion Club after having only played six holes in the first round.

Shortly afterwards, Hull took to Instagram Story to divulge more details.

Hull claimed she had a 'nasty fall' on Sunday.

Hull posted on Instagram Story

Hull wrote:

"Today I had to withdraw from @aramcoteamseries London following medical advice, due to ongoing pain in my right shoulder following a nasty fall on Sunday night. I'm so disappointed as I always love playing in this series, particularly in front of a home crowd. "Sorry to the fans who came out to watch, my playing partners for leaving you after 6 holes, and to all those behind the scenes who work tirelessly to make these events run so well @golf_saudi @letgolf."

Hull left golf fans in awe at her 'saucy' club twirl last week.

In recent months, Hull has split opinion in the golf world by ripping darts on the course.

Runaway World No.1 Nelly Korda was also forced to withdraw from Aramco Team Series London.

Korda made the call last week just days before the event after having being bitten by a dog .

Tournament sponsors and English golf fans have therefore been left somewhat deflated this week as a result of the star two names pulling out of the event.

Aramco Team Series London teed off this morning at Centurion Club with 36 teams of three professionals and one amateur battling it out on day one and two before a final day shootout for the pros on Friday 5 July.

The Aramco Team Series presented by PIF – London is the third of five events on the global team series, with an Asian event in October to be announced, ahead of the finale in Riyadh in November.

Less than 100 days away, the Epson Tour Championship gives the desert another pro event

lpga satellite tour

In just three months, the Coachella Valley’s newest professional golf tournament will come to town.

That will be the Epson Tour Championship, the season finale for the LPGA’s developmental tour. At the end of the 72-hole tournament at the Indian Wells Golf Resort, 15 golfers will have earned at least some playing privileges on the LPGA for 2025.

Followers of the LPGA may have some understanding of the Epson Tour and what it offers, but casual golf fans might not know much about the developmental tour. Here are some important points as the Tour Championship is less than 100 days away on Oct. 3-6.

It’s an international tour

Yes, it is based in the United States, but so is the LPGA itself, and the LPGA features top women players from around the world. The same is true of the Epson Tour. Of the top 15 players at the top of the Race for the Card at the moment, only five are from the United States. The top two players in that chase right now, Fiona Xu and Cassie Porter, are both from New Zealand, a country growing in importance in women’s golf. Other countries represented in the top 15 at the moment are Taiwan, China, South Korea, South Africa, Colombia, the Netherlands and Slovenia.

The tour is in its final chase for 2024

The Epson Tour has played 11 tournaments so far this year, meaning there are only six regular season events remaining before the Tour Championship in Indian Wells. The Epson golfers will play twice in July, twice in August and twice in September. Those final six tournaments will take golfers across the country, with starts in Connecticut, New York, Oregon and Indiana before two starts in Alabama.

More: Epson Tour Championship in Indian Wells will award more exemptions to LPGA for 2025

There are past LPGA players nearing a return

The Epson Tour is not just about college players looking for their first taste of professional golf or international players looking to break through in the United States. Just like on the PGA Tour with the Korn Ferry Tour, there are golfers who are working on the Epson Tour to return to the LPGA. That list includes a player like Kim Kaufmann, ranked 422 nd in the Rolex World Ranking, currently 173rd in the Race to the CMW Globe on the LPGA Tour and third in the Epson Tour Race for the Card. As recently as 2019, Kaufmann played in 21 events on the LPGA, though she has played only a handful of events on the LPGA in recent years. At third in the Race for the Card, Kaufmann has a strong chance of returning to the LPGA in 2025.

The West Coast swing was in April and May

The Epson Tour played two events in Arizona, one in Utah and one in California earlier in the year. The California event was played in Beaumont at the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon. The IOA Championship presented by Morongo Casino was traditionally played the last week of March but moved to the last weekend in April. Juliana Hung of Taiwan won the title in a rout, shooting 21-under par for the 54-hole event for a nine-shot victory over current points leader Fiona Xu. If you are looking for someone with success near the desert, Hung is the player.

The Tour Championship has some differences

The tournament at Indian Wells Golf Resort’s Player Course will be a 72-hole event, rather than the 54 holes played at other Epson Tour events. And while the purse for the Tour Championship won’t be the largest on the tour – still $287,500 – the key is the Tour Championship will offer 650 points to the winner. The other Epson Tour tournaments offer 500 points to the winner. So getting into the Tour Championship and having a great week could move a player up into the top 15 where playing exemptions for the 2025 LPGA Tour are available.

LPGA Tour live

The LPGA Tour is the largest tournament series in women’s professional golf. Most events are held in the USA, but the tour also has a global focus, for example with a strong Asian swing. Five major tournaments are organised on the women’s tour: the Chevron Championship, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the U.S. Women’s Open and, in cooperation with the Ladies European Tour, the Ricoh Women’s British Open and the Evian Championship.

In addition to the LPGA Tour, there is also the second-tier Symetra Tour, which can be used to qualify for the next season of the big tour. Similar to the men’s tour, there are also qualifying tournaments, the annual Qualifying School, where you can earn the right to play on the LPGA Tour, the Epson Tour or neither, depending on your ranking.

The LPGA is the oldest continuing women’s professional sports organisation in the United States. It succeeded the WPGA (Women’s Professional Golf Association, 1944-1949). The LPGA was founded in 1950 by 13 founding women. Alice Bauer, Patty Berg, Bettye Danoff, Helen Dettweiler, Marlene Hagge, Helen Hicks, Opal Hill, Betty Jameson, Sally Sessions, Marilynn Smith, Shirley Spork, Louise Suggs, and Babe Zaharias.

LPGA Tour star Charley Hull withdraws from Aramco Team Series in London due to injury

Charley Hull , one of the biggest stars of the LPGA Tour , had to withdraw from the Aramco Team Series in London on Wednesday morning.

Hull played only six holes in the Ladies European Tour event and then pulled out of the tournament due to an injury. The Englishwoman consulted with a physiotherapist, who recommended that she stop playing. The extent of the injury is unknown at this point.

At last week’s Dow Championship , in which she competed with her best friend Georgia Hall, Hull gave zero indication that she had any ailments. The all-English duo tied for fifth, playing well in the two-woman team event in Michigan.

But now, three days later, Hull saw her momentum stalled in London, not for good reason. Her appearance at next week’s Amundi Evian Championship, the fourth major of the LPGA season in France, is now in jeopardy. Hull has made the cut in each of the three majors this season, with her best finish coming at Sahalee in Washington, where she tied for 16th at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Last season, Hull missed the cut at the Amundi Evian Championship, a mere weeks after tying for second at the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach. And yet, it looks as if she will not have a chance to redeem herself along the shores of Lake Geneva next week.

Hopefully, this injury is more cautionary than reactionary.

2022 LPGA Tour schedule: Tournaments, dates, purses and venues

lpga satellite tour

The 2022 LPGA Tour schedule has been announced, with record prize money for the 34-event docket that means better playing opportunities across the board.

The most significant changes to the schedule are increases to purses in two majors and the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship.

Purse-boosted events

The biggest purse increases on the 2022 LPGA Tour schedule are in three majors, with the US Women's Open purse increasing to $10 million from $5.5 million. The Chevron Championship (formerly the ANA Inspiration) and the AIG Women's Open are seeing huge increases.

The season-ending CME Group Tour Championship purse is also increasing by $2 million to $7 million. The winner of the event will now earn $2 million, marking the biggest first-place prize in women's golf history.

Other tournaments to announce elevated purses are the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open ($2 million, up $500,000 from 2021), the LPGA Mediheal Championship ($1.8 million, up $300,000 from 2021), the Pelican Women’s Championship ($2 million, up $250,000 from 2021), the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational ($2.5 million, up $200,000 from 2021), the Meijer LPGA Classic ($2.5 million, up $200,000 from 2021) and the HSBC Women’s World Championship ($1.7 million, up $100,000 from 2021). Additional purse increases are expected to be announced throughout the season.

There are several new events on the schedule, with JTBC stepping up to increase their sponsor presence on the Tour. The JTBC Championship at Palos Verdes completes a California triple around The Chevron Championship. The Kroger Queen City Championship brings the LPGA to Cincinnati.

LPGA has young star Rose Zhang and great golf. So why is women's tour stagnating?

If the lpga and nbc can't sell charismatic american superstar rose zhang as she tries to win the u.s. women's open at pebble beach, it’s not a great sign for the overall health of the tour..

lpga satellite tour

This is arguably the best time to be in the business of women’s sports.

The World Cup beginning later this month in Australia and New Zealand is going to smash records for ticket sales and television ratings. The WTA recently announced an initiative to reach equal prize money with the men’s tennis tour by 2027, a standard that has already been in place at the Grand Slams for several years.

The Women’s Final Four and Women’s College World Series are showing positive viewership trends, and the NCAA is poised to cash in when their television rights come up for renewal. Athletes in those sports and more have become big stars, with some generating six-figure marketing deals.

Professional team sports are also undergoing a transformation. The Seattle Storm recently sold a 14 percent stake at a $151 million valuation, setting a new benchmark for the WNBA. At the halfway mark of its season, the NWSL posted increases of roughly 50 percent from last year both in attendance and streaming viewers.

So there’s no longer a debate about where women’s sports fit into the landscape. With the right investment and marketing, they aren’t just a niche; there’s real mainstream appeal.

Which makes it all the more confusing and troubling that the LPGA seems like it has stagnated at best and is getting left behind at worst at the very moment it should be taking off like a rocket.

STAY UP-TO-DATE: Subscribe to our Sports newsletter now!

This week, the U.S. Women’s Open will be held at Pebble Beach for the first time in tournament history, offering the biggest prize in women’s golf projected at around $10 million with roughly $1.8 million going to last year’s winner. On Saturday and Sunday, NBC will devote primetime coverage to a women’s major for the first time.

And the star of the show is going to be Rose Zhang, a 20-year-old from Southern California who turned pro in May after 141 weeks as the world’s No. 1 amateur and promptly won her first start on the LPGA Tour . Oh, and she also happens to own the women’s course record at Pebble, shooting 63 a couple years ago while playing for Stanford.

If there were ever a time for the stars to align in women’s golf, this is it. But is the infrastructure in place to capitalize on the moment?

It would be incredibly unfair, of course, to place the entire burden of the sport on the shoulders of a young woman who was in college a few months ago. Zhang could very well be in contention on Sunday, but there's a good chance she won’t be. That's the nature of the sport.

But just a couple weeks ago, she was very much in the mix at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, mounting a Sunday charge at Baltusrol Golf Club that almost saw her win a major in just her second tournament as a pro.

I was glued to the television for the final round. It was among the most compelling golf I’ve seen this year as another 20-year-old phenom, China’s Ruoning Yin, took the title. But on social media, it didn’t seem like any of it was breaking through − a sense that was confirmed by a mediocre television number (658,000 viewers) that was actually lower than last year.

If the LPGA and NBC can’t sell a charismatic American superstar trying to win a major fresh out of college on one of America’s most well-known and historic golf courses, it’s not a great sign for the overall health of the tour.

I’m not here to tell anyone what to watch on a Sunday afternoon, but from where I sit − more as a fan than a journalist on this topic − women’s golf has long been one of the most undervalued properties in sports.

Are we ever going to get to the point where a U.S. Women’s Open final round out-rates a men’s U.S. Open like we often see in a tennis Grand Slam final? Probably not.

But unlike the men’s game, where technology and power have simply overwhelmed most golf courses, the LPGA offers spectacular shot-making with a variety of clubs and spins and strategies for attacking holes that go beyond bashing it as far as possible with a driver.

If you like golf, why wouldn’t you like watching that?

With Zhang’s arrival, it’s time for the big stakeholders in golf to embrace the LPGA like a serious opportunity to broaden the entire sport’s fan base. That takes financial investment, and it takes passion − neither of which are being shown at an acceptable level to meet this moment.

Sure, the USGA is committing at least $10 million to the Women’s Open purse. It’s still half of what the men make. The same goes for the R&A ($7.3 million to $14 million) and the PGA of America, which has more than doubled its prize money from a few years ago to $10 million but still falls short of the $17.5 million going to the men.

Save the excuses about the women’s game not selling as many tickets or not having as many fans as the men and instead ask yourself why that is when a comparable sport like tennis has found a way to sell the women’s game at an extremely high level.

Are you holding tournaments just to hold tournaments, or are you "growing the game," which is the catch phrase you’ve heard plenty over the last year to justify all kinds of morally problematic behavior? Maybe, just maybe, if these organizations invested more, they’d actually put some pressure on themselves to help market the sport.

Speaking of which, in 2014 the USGA made the bold move to stage the Women’s Open at Pinehurst one week after the men played the same course, which meant a full week of promoting it. Surprise, surprise: Television ratings went up 92 percent from the year before.

Nobody is denying that there are challenges. It’s a touchy subject, but the volume of excellent South Korean players coming onto the tour over the last 20 years − some of whom don’t speak much English or aren’t comfortable communicating in it − has presented some barriers for American audiences.

However, world No. 1 Jin Young Ko speaks excellent English and is a delightful personality. The current top-10 of the LPGA season-long race includes two Americans, a Canadian, an Australian, a New Zealander and an Irish woman in addition to two Koreans along with women from Thailand and China − in other words, a tour that looks like the golf-playing world.

Meanwhile, when healthy, Olympic gold medalist Nelly Korda could be the face of the game. Megan Khang, whose parents came to the U.S. as Vietnam War refugees from Laos, has one of the best backstories in all of sports.

If you can’t sell that − especially in a sport that needs more women playing and watching after decades of acting like an Old Boys Club − then you don’t have much imagination for what’s possible.

All around us, we’re seeing other sports figure out how to do it. With Rose Zhang as the LPGA’s fresh-faced superstar, another window of opportunity has opened. Will golf finally walk through it?
