Haribo starts making gummi bears in Pleasant Prairie, but no tours (yet)

German candy maker Haribo has opened its production facility in Pleasant Prairie.

In the 1800s, German immigrants arrived in Wisconsin in droves and the influence of German culture can be seen in town names, summer festivals and the state's love of beer.

Now, Germans have brought a new influence to Wisconsin — Haribo Gummi Bears .

Sure, Haribo gummies have been available in the U.S. since the 1980s. But last week, for the first time, the company opened a production factory in North America.

Located in Pleasant Prairie , the 500,000-square-foot factory is part of a multiphase project that will also include an administrative building.

When did the Haribo factory open in Pleasant Prairie?

Production began in late July at the building along Interstate 94 that features a massive Haribo logo emblazoned on the side of the building. The company said the factory was opened to meet the growing demand by American consumers.

“I started my career with Haribo more than 20 years ago, and I’m so proud to be part of the team that made the dream of a U.S. factory come true,” said Hakan Zor, chief production officer, Haribo of America.

What will be produced at the Haribo factory in Pleasant Prairie?

Haribo said the factory will be almost solely dedicated to producing Goldbears — the brand's most popular snack.

With 200 employees working at the factory, the company predicts that hundreds of tons of Goldbears will be produced at the new location this year.

Does the new Haribo factory mean new flavors will be coming to the U.S.?

While the factory will mainly be used to produce Goldbears, Haribo announced that it'll also be introducing new Wild Berry Goldbears into the American market.

While the new product will be produced in Germany, the presence of the new factory could mean new flavors will be more common, since Haribo said it wants to grow and diversify production at the facility.

Can you take tours of the Haribo factory in Pleasant Prairie?

Unfortunately, Haribo said tours of the factory won't be available “in order to abide by food safety regulations and protect all stakeholders.”

However, the company didn't dismiss the possibility of running tours at the facility in the future.

Why did Haribo choose Pleasant Prairie?

The company said it chose Pleasant Prairie as its U.S. manufacturing location because of its “shared values of quality, trust and independence, coupled with the work ethic of the region and warm welcome from the community.”

Haribo also said it intends to work with the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Carthage College and Gateway Technical College to provide scholarship and internship opportunities.

Haribo’s Pleasant Prairie manufacturing facility now open, producing gummi bears

Ashley Smart

Haribo’s Pleasant Prairie manufacturing facility is officially open and focused on producing the company’s well-known Goldbears gummi treats.

The company announced Thursday that production has begun at the new, 500,000-square-foot factory. There are currently 200 employees working at the facility and the company is planning to expand production in the future.

Haribo originally announced plans for a plant in Pleasant Prairie in March 2017. The company did not break ground for the plant until late 2020.

This is Haribo’s first North American manufacturing facility. It is located southwest of 120th Avenue (West Frontage Road) and Highway C (Wilmot Road) in the Prairie Highlands Corporate Park. The facility is on 136.8 acres of property.

“I started my career with HARIBO more than 20 years ago, and I’m so proud to be part of the team that made the dream of a U.S. factory come true,” said Hakan Zor , chief production officer, Haribo of America. “Our associates worked tirelessly to ensure every step was taken with care, with the best quality equipment, technology and ingredients on the market. The Haribo brand has limitless potential and producing in the U.S. is an exciting next chapter of our story.”

The Pleasant Prairie facility is a multi-phase project. The first phase includes the production facility, an administrative building and a warehouse. Future phases are in development and will include new technology, capacity and hundreds of new employees.

Those future phases could bring employment at the complex to more than 1,200. Haribo has not specified by what date the full buildout of the campus will be completed. The company plans to produce 132 million pounds of gummi candies each year now that phase one of the facility is complete.

“At Haribo we think in generations. We are in the U.S. for the long-term and are honored to be part of the Pleasant Prairie community,” said Wes Saber , chief financial officer, Haribo of America. “One of our core values is trust, and it was important for us to give back to the people of Pleasant Prairie who have welcomed us so warmly. We believe everyone deserves access to quality, affordable education so our partnerships reflect that. We’re committed to creating learning and career opportunities that will drive economic development and wellness for southeast Wisconsin.”

Haribo starts hiring for 400 jobs in Pleasant Prairie plant that opens in a year

Haribo of America over the next year will look to fill almost 400 jobs for its candy making plant in Pleasant Prairie — the company’s first in the U.S. — and recognizes it is in a competitive hiring market.

That facility will manufacture Haribo’s Gold Bear gummi candies for distribution across the country. “Interest” fairs will start in early 2022 with partners including Gateway Technical College for prospective job applicants and students to learn about the future openings, said  Rick LaBerge , CEO at Haribo of America.

Haribo also been active with the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha, which beyond supporting its mission, helps build awareness of the company among residents and potential employees.

“It’s a very competitive market, and there are a lot of options for good associates to go find jobs,” LaBerge said. “Obviously, we’re going to pay competitive wages, but we also want people to join us because they see the value and rewards of working for a family company.”

Hiring has begun already for senior management of the new facility that is under construction west of Interstate 94. It is on schedule to start test production in the fourth quarter of 2022, and by the second quarter of 2023 will start shipping candy for sale in the U.S., LaBerge said.

Its future job openings will include everything in the production process ranging from engineers to forklift drivers.

Haribo is diving into an active Kenosha County job market where companies such as Uline Inc. this summer offered $8,000 hiring bonuses, for example. With 16 locations and about 7,000 employees worldwide, Haribo is no stranger to finding workers. Some of the strategies it uses in its home country of Germany are also being deployed in Wisconsin.

“We really value long-term relationships, that’s with our suppliers but more importantly, that’s with our associates,” LaBerge said. “We have great examples of associates who have long, long tenure with the company. We want to find people who want to grow a career with us.”

Haribo is working with the local schools, including Gateway, University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Carthage College, to develop programs to give students skills needed for jobs in the Haribo plant, LaBerge said.

HARIBO Chooses Contractor For Wisconsin Factory Build

HARIBO of America has selected Gilbane Building Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the general contractor for its first-ever North American manufacturing facility in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.

"The strategic decision to build a manufacturing facility in North America is of great importance to the HARIBO Group, and we are thrilled to take this next important step in the process," said Hans Guido Riegel, managing partner of the HARIBO Group. "HARIBO is the fastest growing confectionery brand in the U.S., and our production facility will support continued long-term growth while also allowing us to be part of the Pleasant Prairie community," he continued. "Our customers and consumers in the U.S. expect us to deliver the HARIBO products they love quickly and reliably. With the new plant we are living up to this responsibility." "We're proud of this major milestone and partnering with Gilbane Building Company on bringing our first North American factory to life," said Arndt Ruesges, chief production officer, HARIBO of America. "We chose to partner with Gilbane, because of the company's extensive experience, breadth of knowledge and commitment to service. We share the same core values of quality and trust." Gilbane Building Company will be responsible for all construction and work-site management, and is committed to executing with excellence. Construction on the 136.8 acre facility is going to begin as soon as possible in 2020. "It's a great honor to partner with HARIBO, and we're so pleased we earned the team's trust to deliver this world-class manufacturing complex," said Adam Jelen, senior vice president, Gilbane Building Company, Milwaukee, Wis. "Like HARIBO, Gilbane is committed to quality and being part of the community. We're looking forward to the next steps on this exciting project and to continuing our longstanding commitment to Southeast Wisconsin." The factory involves a multi-phase build, and upon completion, it will amplify HARIBO's ability to get confectionery products to U.S. customers and consumers with more speed and efficiency than ever before. "HARIBO will invest well above $300 million in our state-of-the-art facility, the largest project in our 100-year history," said Wes Saber, chief financial officer, HARIBO of America. "In addition to that investment, we're going to create up to 385 direct HARIBO jobs in phase one of our build and up to 4,200 indirect jobs upon completion of our full build as per an independent economic study," he continued. "It's important to us to be exemplary corporate citizens and give back to the places where we live and work, so we're proud of the relationships we've already built as we become part of the fabric of the community." "We're beyond excited about selecting our general contractor and making progress to begin construction on our site," said Rick LaBerge, chief operations officer, HARIBO of America. "Our manufacturing facility will be one of the largest in the confectionery industry, and we'll be well-positioned to grow our brand as we bring childlike happiness to customers and consumers through our sweet treats."
