Led by Sally O’Byrne July 6, 2024 – July 13, 2024

Spend 8 days at the Aigas Field Center in the Scottish Highlands for a guided holiday featuring wildlife, birding, history, botany, and scenery.

Aigas is Scotland’s premier field study center, dedicated to nature conservation and environmental education.  Aigas is a thriving nature reserve; an example of responsible ecotourism and restoration ecology; and a scenic place to experience and learn about Highlands wildlife and cultural heritage.

On this Delaware Nature Society eco tour, you will be able to enjoy the grounds of the nature reserve, learn about the reintroduction of European Beaver, experience nearby ancient Caledonian pine forest, see many species of birds including Golden Eagles, European Dipper, Crossbills, Red Deer, and British Primitive Goats.

Aigas Pine Marten by Ian Sargent

Visit Neolithic Clava Cairns (an ancient burial site), Culloden Battlefield, Cawdor Castle and Gardens, shores of the Highlands west coast, the shores of Beauly Firth to spot otters, and the River Beauly.  Birds, mammals, wildflowers, and scenery will be infused with each field trip.

Finally, a visit to The Black Isle will finish off the week.  This mix of pebble shores, cliffs, agricultural lands intermixed with native woodland and old hedgerows will afford opportunities to look for many species of plants (some rare), shorebirds and many other bird species.

Overnight stay and meals will be provided at the Aigas Field Centre during the trip.  No single supplements are charged, and accommodations are in cozy timber lodges nestled among the trees.  Breakfast and dinner is served on-site, and packed lunches are provided for field trips.

Travel to Inverness Scotland is not included and options will be discussed with you after registration.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

tour de natur

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

tour de natur

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

tour de natur

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

tour de natur

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

tour de natur

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

tour de natur

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

tour de natur

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Belgium’s Thomas Detry brings ‘bucket list’ mentality to second go at Games

Olympic Golf

Change Text Size

Thomas Detry is no stranger to representing his country on the world stage.

As an amateur, he played for Belgium in five European Boys’ Team Championships, competed in the Eisenhower Trophy three times and played in the European Team Championship twice. He teamed with Thomas Pieters to win the 2018 World Cup, as well.

But winning a gold medal at the Olympics? Well, that would be next level – and Detry will have a chance to do just that in France this summer at Le Golf National.

“For Belgium, it would mean everything,” Detry said. “When you think of golf, you don't think gold medal because it only recently was re-added as an Olympic sport. So yeah, being able to bring a gold medal, I mean, it means everything.

“When you see how big of a deal it was for Justin (Rose) and Xander Schauffele to win that gold medal, I think it it'll be a true honor for my country and for myself and for everything. And I think it's really something that's on my bucket list.”

This summer will actually mark Detry’s second Olympics. He tied for 16th in the 2020 Summer Games at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Kawagoe, Japan. But he’ll go to Paris with a wealth of course knowledge that he didn’t have four years ago.

Thomas Detry of Team Belgium plays his shot from the first tee during the final round of the men's individual stroke play on Day 9 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Kasumigaseki Country Club on Aug. 1, 2021, in Kawagoe, Saitama, Japan. (Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

Le Golf National, which sits near Versailles, is located about 200 miles from Uccle, the Brussels suburb where Detry grew up. The Albatros course has hosted the Open de France on the DP World Tour all but two years since 1991, as well as the 2018 Ryder Cup. And Detry has played the Open de France five times, with his best finish being a T8 in 2019. He finished T35 last year at Le Golf National and has missed the cut only once, in 2017.

The 31-year-old has been playing well in his second full season on the PGA TOUR, notching three top 10s including a runner-up finish at the Texas Children’s Houston Open in March. It’s been a natural leap for Detry following six full seasons on the DP World Tour, where he collected 10 top-three finishes between 2017 and 2022 and another 20 finishes inside the top 10. To date, he has one international win – at the 2016 Bridgestone Challenge on the European Challenge Tour.

“It's just a good overall test when the course is well prepared with firm greens and high rough,” said Detry, who posted his most recent top 10 at the Zurich Classic, where he finished T8 with partner Robert MacIntyre. “You’ve just got to be sharp with every single part of your game. … So, I think that's why I like it. It's tough, but it's fair.”

When the Olympic men’s competition begins on Aug. 1, Detry expects to see lots of friends and family in the gallery at Le Golf National. First and foremost, will be his wife and two young daughters cheering him on.

Likely joining him on the Belgian team will be 24-year-old Adrien Dumont de Chassart, who is currently 45th in the Olympic Golf Ranking. Although Detry is seven years older, both players went to the University of Illinois and share the same swing coach.

“I've learned to know Adrien better and better, and now that he's on the PGA TOUR, as well,” Detry said. “… It's fun to obviously share some experiences that we've had with our coach, Mike Small, from Illinois. … We have the same swing coach as well.

“So, I think it'll be a fun little team atmosphere and I think we're going to have a lot of fun.”

And Detry already knows where to take Dumont de Chassart for dinner. He favors a restaurant called La Maison de Mana near the Palace of Versailles that is frequented by many DP World Tour players during the Open de France. He knows just what he’ll order, too.

“It's just amazing restaurant that has all sorts of meat,” Detry said. “And they sell something called escargot, which are small little snails, and those are pretty good. It feels a bit weird just to say that you're eating snails, but the way they cooked and the way they presented to you is a very lovely dish.”

Detry also plans to get to Paris early and is hoping to be able to attend some of the other Olympic events at the Games. Four years ago, the world was in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, and all competitions were contested without spectators.

“I'm looking forward to really enjoy the full Olympics atmosphere,” Detry said. “… I haven’t really experienced the (athlete) village. (I want to) enjoy some time off, watch some other sports as well. I would really love to do that.

“I'm good friends with a couple of hockey players. Field hockey is a big sport in Belgium, so I'm really good friends with them. So, I would love to go and see a couple of their games and I don't know, tennis. Tons of different sports. I mean there's so many different sports that, yeah, a bit of everything.”

Special thanks to the Guardian’s head of digital (live) Claire Phipps , a fellow Swiftie.

You can read more about tonight’s show here:

Taylor has three more nights at Paris La Défense Arena before heading to Stockholm, Lisbon and Madrid in the coming weeks.

The missing songs

To make way for seven new performances of songs from The Tortured Poets Department, some songs that previously were staples of the Eras tour weren’t there tonight and presumably have now disappeared from the setlist … for now.

The Archer (from Lover era)

Long Live (from Speak Now era)

the 1 (from folklore era)

the last great american dynasty (from folklore era)

’tis the damn season (from evermore era)

tolerate it (from evermore era)

Thanks to Phoebe Woodward for compiling this list.

Catch up here on Taylor’s performance of the song Paris… in Paris!

Fans will certainly be analysing this evening’s performance for some time.

New setlist, new performances, new outfits – while some songs were cut.

First Europe show ends

“I love you so much,” Taylor tells the crowd in the Paris arena, closing the first night of the Europe leg of her Eras tour, where she revamped her setlist and performed new music for the first time.

Taylor is singing Karma.

‘Cause karma is my boyfriend Karma is a god Karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend Karma’s a relaxing thought Aren’t you envious that for you it’s not? Sweet like honey, karma is a cat Purring in my lap ‘cause it loves me Flexing like a goddamn acrobat Me and karma vibe like that

We’re on the last song :(

“This has been an unforgettable night in Paris, we love you so much!” Taylor tells the audience.

We’re close to the end of the show…

Taylor is now singing Mastermind. Love these lyrics:

What if I told you none of it was accidental And the first night that you saw me, nothing was gonna stop me? I laid the groundwork and then, just like clockwork The dominoes cascaded in a line

“So on the weekends She don’t dress for friends Lately she’s been dressing for revenge”

She’s moved to Vigilante Shit.

And here’s footage from the earlier TTDP set:

Midnight Rain is up now.

“It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me At tea time, everybody agrees I’ll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero”

Taylor Swift's European Eras Tour leg kicked off in Paris with a new setlist. See which songs are in and out.

May 9, 2024 / 8:24 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

Taylor Swift fever struck Paris on Thursday as the highest-grossing tour in history finally arrived in Europe, with fans treated to the first-ever performance of songs from her latest album.

The Eras Tour began its European leg with four dates at the La Defense Arena in Paris.

"I wish I could have toured Europe more. This is a dream crowd," the 34-year-old megastar told the ecstatic audience.

There were deafening shrieks as images of typewriter sheets indicated that songs off the new album "The Tortured Poets Department" were starting late in the show.

Emerging in a lyrics-covered dress, she ran through several of the darker new tracks starting with "But Daddy I Love Him" and "Fortnight", a particularly furious rendition of "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" and an elaborate "I Can Do it with a Broken Heart," with a golden-era Hollywood dance routine.

Other "The Tortured Poets Department" songs performed included "So High School," "Down Bad" and "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," according to ETonline .

"You were the first crowd to see songs from 'The Tortured Poets Department'," she said, before adding: "Or, as I like to call it, 'Female Rage: the Musical.'"

That was a dream come true for many in the audience.

"I've been so excited for so long, I can't believe it's actually happening," said 11-year-old Emma, who had flown in with her mother from New York.

Adding songs from "The Tortured Poets Department" wasn't the only change to the show and its 45-song setlist.

Perhaps the biggest change, according to ETonline, is the "Folklore" and "Evermore" setlists were combined, cutting four songs across the two albums: "'Tis the Damn Season," "Tolerate It," "The 1" and "The Last Great American Dynasty."

"On the Eras Tour, we have now reunited the sisters, combined them into one chapter," Swift said, according to video posted to social media. "You can call it "Folklore, Evermore" or you can call it the Sister Albums! You can call it whatever you want as long as you promise to sing 'Champagne Problems' with me."

"The Archer" was removed from the "Lovers" portion of the show and "Long Live" was cut from the "Speak Now" era setlist, according to ETonline.

One of the secret songs was, fittingly, the "Midnights" bonus track "Paris."

Parts of the show were also rearranged to make room for the newest era. The "Red" era was moved from the fifth to the third slot, according to ETonline, and the newest album was introduced following the "1989" set.

The venue said a fifth of the crowd were from the United States — many attracted by Europe's rules against charging huge mark-ups on resale tickets that can save Americans thousands of dollars compared with shows at home.

Georg'Ann Daly decided to celebrate her 23rd birthday with the Paris show. It meant flying from Nashville to Chicago to London and catching the Eurostar to Paris.

"I've always been obsessed with Taylor Swift," she told AFP.

A handful of superfans camped out from Tuesday in Paris to ensure they got a prime spot.

"I didn't plan to, but I came to check it out and I saw the first tents and I panicked a little," said Chris, 30.

Noah, 20, is seeing all four Paris concerts — he used 22 email addresses to get through the lottery system and secure the tickets.

FRANCE-MUSIC-AUDIENCE-TAYLOR-SWIFT

After wrapping up her run in Paris, Swift will head for dates in Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Poland and Austria.

The Eras Tour has worked its way across North and South America and Asia since starting in March 2023.

By the end of the year, it had already become the first to sell more than $1 billion in tickets and is on track to more than double that by the time it concludes in Vancouver this December.

Swift's popularity shows no sign of dimming — the new album sold 1.4 million copies on its first day and broke every streaming record , reaching a billion streams on Spotify within five days.

Swift's tell-all dissections of her love stories have been the fuel powering her global domination, and fans have been poring over "The Tortured Poets Department" for cryptic clues about ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, her short-but-dramatic fling with Matty Healy (lead singer of The 1975), and her current partner, American football star Travis Kelce.

"Taylor talks about toxic relationships, impossible love, politics, mental health, and so much more," said Chris as she waited by her tent for the big moment. "I think we can all find a song that resonates with our experiences."

2024 Wells Fargo Championship purse, prize money: Payout for golfers from $20 million pool for signature event

Plenty of green will be on the line this week as players aim to conquer the green mile.

wells-fargo-championship-trophy-g.jpg

Another signature event has arrived on the PGA Tour calendar meaning big stakes and big money will be on the line this week at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship. Quail Hollow Club will once again host and welcome 69 players to the Charlotte area for four days of a major championship caliber test.

While the trophy may not be one of the four big ones -- that will have to wait until next week when Valhalla hosts the 2024 PGA Championship -- the purse is in the same ballpark. A total of $20 million will be up for grabs this week falling in line with the total from the Masters last month and other signature events like the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Genesis Invitational.

Unlike the those two tournaments, however, only $3,600,000 will be shelled out to the winner. This represents the third-highest payday a winner could receive so far in 2024 as the top prize gets boosted to a nice, round $4 million for the three player invitationals while the Players Championship awarded Scottie Scheffler $4.5 million for his victory.

Wyndham Clark is no stranger to cashing big checks as a winner of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and contender at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Players Championship and RBC Heritage. The defending champion hopes to go back-to-back while other big names like Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth hope to cash their first winner's circle in just about two years.

Those who fall short won't leave empty handed as every player will take home at least $40,000 as there is no cut in this event. The top three will all clear seven figures, the top 11 will all clear half a million and the top 36 will all take home at least six figures for their four days of work in the Queen City.

Madonna’s Celebration Tour pulls record 1.6M fans into the groove at Rio’s Copacabana

More than a million music fans gathered at Brazil’s iconic Copacabana beach to prove their love to Madonna over the weekend.

The “Get into the Groove” and “Vogue” pop diva concluded her career-spanning Celebration Tour with a bang over the weekend, treating fans in Rio de Janeiro to a free beach concert on Saturday. “This really happened,” the singer reminisced in an Instagram video shared Sunday.

The Instagram clip shows an aerial view of attendees assembling on the sandy Brazilian strip, which stretches more than 2 miles along the coast. While some fans danced on the beach, others hosted house parties in nearby beachfront apartments and hotels, the Associated Press reported.

Madonna’s Celebration tour is a messy victory lap that needs more razzle-dazzle

Madonna brought her career-spanning Celebration tour to the Kia Forum for a night of hits, memories and grievances.

March 5, 2024

“This place is magic,” the 65-year-old singing icon said during her show, which also featured appearances from Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar.

An estimated 1.6 million people gathered for Madonna’s Celebration Tour finale, Brazilian outlet G1 reported, citing Rio City Hall’s tourism agency. The event was also broadcast on Brazilian network TV Globo. Even before a million-plus fans descended on Copacabana over the weekend, Madonna announced in late March that her send-off would be her “biggest gig yet.”

“The show will be free of charge as a thank you to her fans for celebrating more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour,” her website said.

Saturday’s concert broke Madge’s personal attendance record — 130,000 fans at Paris’ Parc des Sceaux in 1987 — by more than tenfold. Madonna also bested the record previously held by the Rolling Stones’ 2006 Copacabana concert , which drew 1.5 million people.

‘No Madonna fan’ should expect a Madonna show to start on time. So says Team Madonna

Madonna’s legal team submits a dismissal request in a class-action case about her concert tardiness, contending that a two-hour delay didn’t injure ticketholders.

April 5, 2024

” @Madonna makes history in Rio tonight marking the largest ever standalone concert for any artist, with over 1.6 million fans attending as she closes The Celebration Tour,” Live Nation announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

Madonna’s Celebration Tour launched in October, months after she was hospitalized for a bacterial infection last June. The Grammy winner brought her headline-generating tour to Inglewood’s Kia Forum for several nights in March.

Times critic Mikael Wood wrote that the singer’s Celebration Tour “ was curiously short on joy. ”

“A pop concert is a theater of personality and craft, not one of plot or character development,” he added. “But a narrative this messy needed more razzle-dazzle.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
