The landmark of Tibet

Luxury Tibet Tours

The landscapes and mysterious culture on the roof of the world make Tibet an unforgettable travel destination. As you explore the once-forbidden land, you’ll savor insider experiences, unique cultural interactions and a host of extraordinary moments on one of the Tibet luxury tours.

You will roam around towering monasteries, ringing bells, chanting monks and spinning prayer wheels as you travel through the ancient Kingdom of Tibet. In Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, visit the 7th-century former winter residence of the Dalai Lama, the grand Potala Palace. Explore the revered Jokhang Temple and sprawling Sera Monastery. Browse the shops on Barkhor Street for traditional Tibetan handicrafts, amulets and religious paintings.

As a barren land at first, Norbulingka was initially nothing but full of overgrown weeds and infested wild animals. The 7th Dalai Lama was attracted to this place because of the scrub growth alongside and beautiful scenery in summer. As a result, he would like to pitch camp to spend his whole summertime there. This place was finally constructed in the year of 1755 by the 7th Dalai Lama to meet guests, organize ceremonies and most importantly, handle political issues.

Discover the cultural treasures at Drepung Monastery; pay a visit to a local family for some refreshments and conversation; explore Samding Monastery - the only Tibetan monastery which is taken charge by a woman on an island in the middle of remarkable Lake Yamdrok; see Samye Monastery - the first monastery and palace, to feel the profound history of Tibetan Buddhism; visit the Everest Base Camp, the starting point for the expeditions that attempt to conquer the world's highest mountain, etc. During your journey, pass through striking pastoral landscapes and ascend to dizzying heights, you will find your desired Tibet.

Our travel experts know this vast land well and can work out an efficient route that caters to your interests, delivering a personalized trip like no other. Private and Luxury Tibet Tours

On your Tibet travel you’ll spot Buddhist monks and nuns prostrate in front of  Lhasa’s Jokhang Temple . Its rooftop offers a spectacular view of  Barkhor Square  and the iconic  Potala Palace . Near  Sera Monastery , an elderly woman, spinning a prayer wheel, smiles warmly. In no time at all you feel the spiritual energy of Tibet, shining through the landscape, radiating from every colorful door and quiet niche.

This is no more the forbidden kingdom. If Tibet has long been on your bucket-list, it’s time to tick it off. It may be a longish journey to get there, and permits, paperwork and guides are required. But you can leave all of that to your friends at Enchanting Travels; they’ll orchestrate a private Tibet tour that you’ll be talking to your grandchildren about.

Turquoise blue  Yamdrok Lake  shimmers in the bright sunshine, reflecting cloudless Himalayan skies. Shaggy yaks, most beloved animal of the Tibetans, graze on the vast high-altitude plateaus.  Mt Everest’s North Base Camp  is accessible by road, without any need for trekking. It is a fascinating place, this massive plateau in the Himalayas—an almost inhospitable terrain, with a welcoming people.

You’ve probably been in love with the idea of Tibet for a long time. Now the reality of it will touch your soul.

*Please note that Tibet tours are only possible for five or more people traveling together as per the new Visa regulations by the Chinese government.

Tibet Luxury Tours

Tibet, being known as the Roof of the World, is the highest place to heaven, with an average elevation of 4,900 meters. Located in a plateau north of the Himalayas, it is a mysterious, exotic place that many outsiders yearned for. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the massive, tranquil land with its majestic scenery and mysterious religious culture has exerted an awesome draw on travelers. If it’s your first time in Tibet, you cannot miss the top attractions listed below, because they represent the most authentic Tibet.

Tibet is the referred real Shangri-La, the forbidden land, the roof of the world and the holy land of your innermost desire. Snow mountains and grasslands, scattered herds of yak and nomads on the plateau, spectacular monasteries and unsophisticated smiles, tranquil lake and transparent blue sky, all can be seen on this magic land. Tibet is a province of natural wonder, a treasury of cultural relics and a destination of attractive adventure.

Located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at the southwest frontier of China, Tibet covers an area of 1.2 million sq km which is 4,000 meters above sea level at an average and has over 50 peaks more than 7,000 meters. So it known as the ‘the roof of the world’ or ‘the third pole on the globe’. Geographically, Tibet can be divided into three parts: the east, south and north. The eastern part is virgin forest region, the northern part is open grassland, and the southern part is the one for agriculture. And administratively, Tibet is divided into one municipality and six prefectures, with Lhasa its municipality and Shigatse, Ngari, Shannan, Chamdo, Nagqu as well as Nyingchi. The major cities and towns such as Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyantse and Tsedang located in the central and southern area.

History of Tibet

Tibet has a rich history as a nation, existing side-by-side with China for centuries. In 1950, the newly established Chinese Communist regime decided that Tibet must become a permanent part of the People’s Republic of China and launched an invasion.

For China, possessing Tibet gave access to rich natural resources and allowed it to militarise the strategically important border with India. With 40,000 Chinese troops in its sparsely populated country, the Tibetan government – led by the still teenaged Dalai Lama – was forced to recognise China’s rule in return for promises to protect Tibet’s political system and Tibetan Buddhism.

China failed to keep its promises and ongoing Tibetan resistance came to a head on 10 March 1959. Hundreds of thousands of Tibetans surrounded the Potala Palace in Lhasa fearing that the Dalai Lama was about to be kidnapped or assassinated. The uprising was brutally suppressed and the Dalai Lama was forced to flee into exile.

The 10th of March is now commemorated as National Uprising Day by Tibetans and supporters across the world.

To this day Tibet remains an independent state under illegal occupation.

People of Tibet

Population composition The population of the region is almost entirely Tibetan, with Han (Chinese), Hui (Chinese Muslims), Monba, Lhoba, and other minority nationalities. Thus, the majority of the people of Tibet have the same ethnic origin, have traditionally practiced the same religion, and speak the same language.

The Tibetan and Burmese languages are related, although they are mutually unintelligible in their modern forms. Spoken Tibetan has developed a pattern of regional dialects and subdialects, which can be mutually understood. The dialect of Lhasa is used as a lingua franca. There are two social levels of speech—zhe-sa (honorific) and phal-skad (ordinary); their use depends upon the relative social status of the speaker and the listener. The use of Chinese has become more common in the region since the 1960s.

Tibetan is written in a script derived from that of Indian Gupta about 600 ce. It has a syllabary of 30 consonants and five vowels; six additional symbols are used in writing Sanskrit words. The script itself has four variations—dbu-can (primarily for Buddhist textbooks), dbu-med and ’Khyug-yig (for general use), and ’bru-tsha (for decorative writing).

Bon is considered to be the first known religion in Tibet, although there is some argument as to the time of its establishment. It is a form of shamanism, encompassing a belief in gods, demons, and ancestral spirits who are responsive to priests, or shamans. With the rise of Buddhism, Bon adopted certain Buddhist rituals and concepts, and the Buddhists also adopted certain features of Bon, so that the two religions came to have many points of resemblance.

Although Chinese Buddhism was introduced in ancient times, the mainstream of Buddhist teachings came to Tibet from India. The first Buddhist scripture may have arrived in the 3rd century ce, but active promulgation did not begin until the 8th century. In later centuries numerous Buddhist sects were formed, including the Dge-lugs-pa, which emphasizes monastic discipline; also known as the Yellow Hat sect, in the 17th century it gained political supremacy that lasted until 1959.

The overwhelming majority of Tibetans traditionally have been Buddhists. Before the 1950s, prayer flags flew from every home and adorned the mountain slopes. Monasteries were established throughout the country, and the Dalai Lama, the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism, was the supreme political head of the nation. A minority, however, were adherents of Islam, Hinduism, Bon, or Christianity. The Dalai Lama went into exile in 1959 after the outbreak in Tibet of an armed rebellion against Chinese authorities that was suppressed by the Chinese army. Since then the Chinese at times have attempted to eliminate the influence of religion in Tibetan life.

Art & Culture of Tibet

In Tibet, you will always be amazed by the artistic wonders: the architectures, the prayer-flags, sculptures and Thangkas, songs and dances, which are representation of the Tibetan cultures. Tibetan arts have gone through a 5000 years of history. The prehistoric art was closely bound up with the aboriginal Bon religion, while its later development relied greatly on the Tibetan Buddhist culture. Therefore, it has been imbued with strong ethnic and regional features.

Bon is the main aboriginal religion during the prehistoric civilization on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, which was established in the 5th century B.C. by Shenrab Miwoche, the prince of Zhang-zhung kingdom in western Tibet. Around the first century A.D. the religion began to spread eastward until fully distributed in Tsang region and Lhasa region. This marked its first zenith when it almost dominated the political, economic and cultural life in the early stage of the Tubo Kingdom. Bon advocated pantheism and believed that “every thing has a soul”. The deities, the supernatural powers of mountains, rivers, lakes, seas, the sun, the moon, stars, wind, rain, thunder, lightening, birds, and beast, etc. as many as one can enumerate, govern the birth, ageing, sickness, death, events and fortune of people, who could not predict and control their own destinies because people are believed to be created by the deities.

In the 7th century A.D., Buddhism was introduced to Tubo Kingdom on a large scale and Bon lost its dominance in the mid 8th century. Tibetan Buddihism has been ramified into four major sects: Nyingma Sect, Kadam Sect, Sakya Sect, Kagyu Sect and Gulug up to the 15th century. These sects had later on brought significant and extensive impacts on political, economic and cultural life of Tibetan people in progression of different period of time.

The Tibetan arts have been inevitably dyed with a distinctive religious arts, especially the Tibetan Buddhist ones, have constituted the main body of the Tibetan arts and made it stand out in utterly different way among the others.

Buddha is the sovereign of the realm of Tibetan Buddhism, and is the most frequently occurred figure in Tibetan art works as well. The major subject matters of Tibetan arts include Buddha, Bodhisattvas and a Variety of Deities, the mandala, the Gurus and Dharma Kings, the biographic Stories and Jataka Stories of Sakyamuni.

The major art forms are composed of Tibetan Architectures including Ancient Tomb Architectures, Monastery Architectures, Palace Architectures, Tibetan Residence Architectures; Tibetan Sculptures including Buddhist Sculptures, Metal Sculptures, Clay Modelings, Stone Carvings, Tibetan Paintings including Thangka, fresco, rock drawing and contemporary painting; Tibetan Handicrafts, Metal Wares, Masks, Block-Printing, Textiles Handicrafts and Wooden Wares.

Tibet, often referred to as the "Roof of the World," stands as a testament to nature's grandeur and human resilience. Nestled amidst the soaring peaks of the Himalayas, it beckons travelers with its rich tapestry of ancient cultures, profound spirituality, and landscapes that seem almost otherworldly. As you traverse its vast plateaus, explore sacred monasteries echoing with chants, and meet locals who embody a deep-rooted connection to both land and faith, you'll discover that Tibet is more than just a destination; it's a soulful journey. At Luxury Holidays Nepal, we invite you to experience this mystical realm, ensuring an immersion into its essence and an adventure that resonates with luxury and authenticity.

Why Choose Tibet?

Venturing into the realm of world travel often leads many wanderlust-driven souls to ask the same question: Why Tibet? Enveloped by the rugged beauty of the Himalayas and imbued with profound spiritual energy, Tibet has beckoned travelers for centuries. At Luxury Holidays Nepal, we've cultivated some compelling reasons for you to choose Tibet as your next destination:

Soulful Spirituality : The heart of Tibetan Buddhism beats strongly in its monasteries, temples, and pilgrimage sites. Dive deep into meditation, partake in ancient rituals, or simply observe the devout practices of pilgrims and monks. A journey through Tibet is often described as a journey within oneself.

Mesmerizing Landscapes : At the 'Roof of the World', be ready to be spellbound by vast plateaus, pristine lakes like Yamdrok, and towering peaks including the world-renowned Mount Everest. The visual grandeur of Tibet is unparalleled.

Rich Cultural Heritage : Tibet is a treasure trove of traditions. From the unique sounds of Tibetan throat singing to the intricate Thangka paintings, there's a cultural experience waiting at every turn. Delve into local lore, festivals, and traditions that have remained unchanged for centuries.

Heartfelt Hospitality : Tibetans are known for their warmth and genuine hospitality. Engage in heartwarming conversations over a cup of butter tea or share a meal in a local's home. Their welcoming nature is bound to make your journey memorable.

Adventurous Expeditions : For those who seek adventure, Tibet offers treks through some of the most challenging terrains. Whether it's a trek to Mount Everest's North Base Camp or circumambulating the sacred Mount Kailash, there's an adventure for every thrill-seeker.

Gateway to the Himalayas : Tibet serves as a perfect starting point for many explorations in the Himalayan region. Whether you're venturing into Nepal, Bhutan, or further into China, Tibet's strategic location makes it an essential pit stop.

Sustainable Tourism : With a growing emphasis on responsible travel, choosing Tibet supports local communities, artisans, and guides. It's a chance to contribute to an economy that cherishes its land and traditions.

Culinary Delights : Tibetan cuisine, although simple, is hearty and flavorful. Relish dishes like momos (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), and try their unique barley beer, 'chang'.

Untouched Beauty : Unlike many tourist hotspots, several parts of Tibet remain relatively untouched by mass tourism. This allows for a more intimate and authentic experience.

A Retreat from Modernity : In a world dominated by digital distractions, Tibet offers a refreshing escape. It’s a place where one can disconnect, introspect, and rejuvenate.

At Luxury Holidays Nepal, we believe that a trip to Tibet is not just a tick off a travel list but an experience that nurtures the soul and broadens horizons. Join us and immerse yourself in the timeless allure of this mystical land.

Preparing for Your Trip to Tibet

A journey to Tibet promises breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural immersion, and spiritual awakenings. But as with any high-altitude destination, preparing adequately is key to making the most of your experience. Here are some expert tips from Luxury Holidays Nepal to ensure you're well-prepared:

Acclimatization : Tibet’s high altitude means less oxygen, which can lead to altitude sickness. Begin your trip in places like Lhasa to gradually acclimatize. Also, consider taking altitude sickness pills after consulting with your doctor.

Visa and Permits : You'll need a Chinese visa and a Tibet Travel Permit. Luxury Holidays Nepal can guide you through this process, but ensure you start this well in advance to avoid any last-minute hitches.

Health Precautions : Consult your physician before embarking, especially if you have any underlying conditions. Carry a basic first aid kit, medications for common ailments, and any personal prescriptions.

Packing Essentials :

  • Clothing : Given Tibet's diverse climate, layering is crucial. Include thermal wear, fleece jackets, and a waterproof, windproof outer layer.
  • Footwear : Sturdy hiking boots for trekkers; comfortable walking shoes for others.
  • Sun Protection : High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Other Essentials : Water bottle, portable water purifier or iodine tablets, flashlight, spare batteries, and a personal toiletries kit.

Travel Insurance : Always travel with comprehensive insurance, especially one that covers high-altitude sickness, emergency evacuations, and the activities you plan to undertake, like trekking.

Cultural Etiquette : Understanding and respecting Tibetan customs will enrich your experience. This includes:

  • Asking for permission before taking photographs of people or inside monasteries.
  • Walking clockwise around temples, stupas, or any religious sites.
  • Avoiding any political discussions or demonstrations.

Language : While Tibetan is the primary language, having a phrasebook or translation app can be handy. However, most tour guides, especially those from Luxury Holidays Nepal, are fluent in English and can bridge any communication gaps.

Currency and Budgeting : The official currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY). While major cities have ATMs and accept credit cards, always carry sufficient cash, especially when traveling to remote areas.

Connectivity : While cities like Lhasa offer good connectivity, internet and mobile services might be sporadic in remote regions. Inform your loved ones about your itinerary and stay connected whenever possible.

Local Cuisine : Tibetan food is an experience in itself. Try local dishes like momos, thukpa, and butter tea. However, carry some snacks or familiar foods if you have specific dietary needs.

Remember, a trip to Tibet is a journey both externally and internally. While the above preparations are crucial, also prepare your mind and soul for the enriching experiences that await. Trust in Luxury Holidays Nepal to guide you every step of the way, ensuring a seamless and memorable Tibetan adventure.

Visa and Permit Requirements for Traveling to Tibet

Traveling to Tibet involves not just securing a Chinese visa but also obtaining special permits due to its unique status as an autonomous region of China. Here's a comprehensive guide to understanding the visa and permit process:

Chinese Visa :

  • Before you can get a Tibet Travel Permit, you'll need a valid Chinese visa.
  • Most travelers opt for a tourist visa (Type L).
  • It's recommended to apply for a Chinese visa in your home country through the Chinese embassy or consulate.
  • Note : When applying, it might be wise not to mention Tibet as a destination as sometimes this can complicate the visa process. Instead, list cities like Beijing, Shanghai, or Chengdu.

Tibet Travel Permit :

  • Once you have your Chinese visa, you need a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) to enter Tibet.
  • Individual travelers cannot obtain this permit on their own; it must be arranged by a travel agency, like Luxury Holidays Nepal.
  • The application usually requires a scanned copy of your passport and Chinese visa.
  • Processing time varies but generally takes about 15-20 days.

Additional Permits :

If you're venturing outside Lhasa to places like Mount Everest Base Camp, Mount Kailash, or the regions near the Nepal-Tibet border, you will need additional permits:

  • Aliens’ Travel Permit (ATP) : Required for areas outside of Lhasa.
  • Military Permit : Needed for some sensitive areas like Ngari (Mount Kailash), Nyingchi, and some areas near the Sino-Indian border.
  • Border Pass : Necessary if you're planning to approach areas near the Nepal-Tibet or Sino-India border.

These additional permits are also organized by your travel agency. You'll need to provide them with specific details about your planned itinerary so they can secure the necessary permissions.

Entering Tibet : You can enter Tibet by flight, train, or overland (from Nepal). If entering from Nepal, instead of the standard Chinese visa, you'll need a Group Tourist Visa, which your travel agency will arrange in Kathmandu.

Important Tips :

  • Always keep multiple photocopies of all your permits and visas, as you'll need to show them at multiple checkpoints.
  • Finalize your itinerary in advance, especially if venturing outside Lhasa, as permits are location-specific.
  • Travelers are only allowed to travel in Tibet as part of a guided tour with an approved agency.

Luxury Holidays Nepal prides itself on navigating the complexities of Tibetan travel for our clients, ensuring a seamless experience. Trust in our expertise, and we'll handle all the bureaucratic intricacies while you focus on anticipating the adventure ahead.

Preventing Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is a concern for many travelers venturing to high-altitude destinations like Tibet. With elevations that can exceed 4,000 meters (13,000 feet), taking precautions is essential. Here's a comprehensive guide to understanding and preventing altitude sickness:

Understand the Symptoms :

Recognizing the signs of altitude sickness can help in early diagnosis and management. Common symptoms include:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of appetite

Gradual Acclimatization :

  • The key to preventing AMS is to ascend slowly. If flying directly into Lhasa or any high-altitude city, spend several days there to acclimatize before moving to higher elevations.
  • Avoid ascending more than 300-500 meters (1,000-1,650 feet) per day once you're above 3,000 meters (10,000 feet).
  • For every 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) gained, consider spending a day at that altitude to adjust.

Stay Hydrated :

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration can exacerbate AMS symptoms.
  • Limit or avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can lead to dehydration and disturb sleep patterns.

Medications :

  • Acetazolamide (Diamox) is the most commonly prescribed medication to help prevent AMS. It aids acclimatization but has side effects; consult with a doctor before your trip.
  • For headaches, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or paracetamol can be helpful.
  • Always carry a basic first-aid kit and ensure that you have the necessary medications with you.

Eat Carbohydrates : Consuming a diet rich in carbohydrates can help in acclimatization. Opt for foods like pasta, bread, grains, and cereals.

Oxygen : Some travelers carry portable oxygen canisters, especially if trekking in remote areas. These can be beneficial if feeling short of breath, but they are a temporary measure and not a substitute for proper acclimatization.

Be Aware of Altitude Sickness’s Severe Forms : High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) are severe and potentially fatal forms of altitude sickness. Symptoms include severe breathlessness, a bubbling sound while breathing, confusion, or lack of coordination. Immediate descent and medical attention are crucial if these symptoms arise.

Know Your Limits :

  • Listen to your body. If symptoms persist or become severe, do not ascend further. In some cases, it might be necessary to descend to a lower altitude until symptoms resolve.
  • Do not let peer pressure or strict itineraries push you beyond what you're comfortably able to handle.

Luxury Holidays Nepal emphasizes the importance of health and safety in all our tours. Our guides are trained to recognize the signs of AMS and ensure the well-being of our travelers. By taking precautions and being informed, your high-altitude adventure in Tibet can be both exciting and safe.

Tibet Travel Safety

Tibet, with its spiritual aura and mesmerizing landscapes, has been a popular destination for many travelers. While it's generally a safe region, there are certain factors related to its unique geography, political climate, and cultural nuances that one should be aware of. Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensuring safety during your Tibetan journey:

Altitude Sickness : The most common health concern for travelers in Tibet. Always take precautions to prevent altitude sickness, which includes gradual acclimatization, staying hydrated, and being aware of the symptoms.

Political Sensitivities :

  • Tibet has a complex political history with China. It's essential to be respectful and avoid discussing sensitive topics related to Tibet's independence, the Dalai Lama, and other political issues.
  • Participating in political gatherings or demonstrations is strongly discouraged and could result in arrest or deportation.

Travel Restrictions :

  • Due to its autonomous status, Tibet has several travel restrictions. Always travel with a tour operator like Luxury Holidays Nepal that's aware of the necessary permits and documentation.
  • Independent travel outside of Lhasa is restricted; you must be part of a tour group.

Road Conditions :

  • While major roads, especially from Lhasa to key sites, are well-maintained, some remote areas may have challenging road conditions. Always travel with experienced drivers and in vehicles suited for rough terrains.
  • Landslides and road blockages, especially during the rainy season, can be common in some regions.

Food and Water :

  • Stick to reputable dining establishments. Avoid street food if you have a sensitive stomach.
  • Always drink bottled or purified water to avoid waterborne diseases.

Respect Religious and Cultural Norms :

  • Always ask for permission before photographing people or religious ceremonies.
  • Follow the local custom of walking clockwise around religious sites and monasteries.
  • Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites.

Wildlife : If trekking or exploring remote areas, be aware of the local wildlife. While encounters are rare, it's good to know which animals are native to the area and any precautions to take.

Medical Preparations :

  • Carry a well-stocked first aid kit and any personal medications.
  • Health facilities in Tibet, especially outside Lhasa, can be basic. Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that includes evacuation coverage for more severe medical emergencies.

Personal Belongings : Like any other tourist destination, be mindful of your belongings in crowded places. Use hotel safes for valuables and be wary of pickpockets in busy areas.

Local Guides : Hiring a local guide, especially through trusted tour operators like Luxury Holidays Nepal, not only ensures you get insightful information but also ensures that you're navigating the region safely and responsibly.

Traveling to Tibet is a dream for many, and with the right precautions, it can be a safe and enriching experience. Trust in the expertise of Luxury Holidays Nepal to guide you through a safe, memorable, and hassle-free Tibetan adventure.

Best Time to Visit Tibet

Choosing the right time to visit Tibet can greatly influence your experience, as Tibet's high-altitude climate varies significantly throughout the year. The best time often depends on the activities you're interested in. Here’s a detailed overview to help you decide:

Spring (April to June) :

  • Weather : Gradually warming, with daytime temperatures ranging from 5°C to 20°C (41°F to 68°F).
  • Landscape : As the snow melts, the region starts to bloom, making it a picturesque time to visit.
  • Activities : Trekking routes begin to open up, and cultural festivals take place.
  • Consideration : Some mountain passes might still be snow-covered, particularly in early spring.

Summer (July to August) :

  • Weather : Warmest time of the year with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F). This is also the rainy season, with August being the wettest month.
  • Landscape : Lush and green, with wildflowers in full bloom, especially in lower altitudes.
  • Activities : Good for cultural sightseeing, but trekkers need to be wary of potential landslides in certain areas.
  • Consideration : While Lhasa and most parts of Tibet see only mild rainfall, certain regions, especially the eastern part, can be quite wet.

Autumn (September to October) :

  • Weather : Cool and clear with temperatures between 5°C and 20°C (41°F to 68°F). One of the best times for visibility.
  • Landscape : Fall colors make the region exceptionally picturesque.
  • Activities : Perfect for trekking and mountaineering as the skies are clear and the views of the Himalayas are unmatched.
  • Consideration : It's a popular season, so expect more tourists, especially in well-known spots.

Winter (November to March) :

  • Weather : Cold, especially in January and February, with temperatures often below freezing. However, Lhasa can be milder and sunny during the daytime.
  • Landscape : Snow-covered mountains and valleys, offering a unique beauty.
  • Activities : While trekking might be off the cards, it's a great time for budget travelers as there are fewer tourists, and prices can be lower. The Tibetan New Year, usually in February or March, is a cultural highlight.
  • Consideration : Some regions, especially northern and western Tibet, might be inaccessible due to heavy snow. Ensure you're well-equipped for the cold.

While each season has its charms and challenges, the months from April to October are generally considered the best for visiting Tibet due to milder weather and better road conditions. However, if you prefer a quieter experience and wish to immerse in Tibetan culture, the winter months might be ideal.

Whichever time you choose, Luxury Holidays Nepal ensures you're well-informed and prepared for an unforgettable Tibetan journey.

Tibetan Cuisine: A Culinary Journey

Tibetan cuisine, deeply influenced by its cold climate and high-altitude terrain, offers much more than what meets the eye. Traditional Tibetan food is hearty and predominantly revolves around barley, meat, and dairy products. Let’s explore some must-try dishes and beverages during your Tibetan journey:

Tsampa (Zanba) : A staple in the Tibetan diet, Tsampa is roasted barley flour usually mixed with yak butter tea to form a dense, dough-like consistency. It's highly nutritious and serves as a primary source of sustenance in the harsh Tibetan environment.

Momos : Tibetan dumplings filled with meat (usually yak or beef) or vegetables. They can be steamed, fried, or boiled and are often served with a spicy tomato-based sauce.

Thukpa : A noodle soup that consists of meat or vegetables. The broth is hearty and warming, making it a popular dish, especially in colder months.

Yak Meat : Yak meat is lean and has a distinct taste. It can be consumed in various forms – dried, in stews, or as steaks. Dried yak meat, akin to beef jerky, is a common snack among Tibetans.

Tingmo : A type of steamed bread, often layered and spiral-shaped. It’s fluffy and is commonly served as an accompaniment to other dishes.

Butter Tea (Po Cha) : Made of churning tea, salt, and yak butter, this unique beverage is an acquired taste for many. However, it's deeply ingrained in Tibetan culture and is a must-try. It’s also calorie-rich, providing locals with the energy they need for the day.

Chang (Tibetan Barley Beer) : A mild alcoholic beverage made from fermented barley. It's a traditional drink and is often consumed during festivals and special occasions.

Laping : A popular street food, Laping is a spicy cold mung bean noodle dish seasoned with chili sauce, soy sauce, garlic, and coriander.

Cheese and Dairy Products : Given the abundance of yaks, dairy products are essential in Tibetan cuisine. You’ll find various kinds of cheese, including hard cheese and the softer "chura loenpa". Yak milk yogurt is also prevalent and often consumed for breakfast or as a snack.

Sweet Rice : A dish typically reserved for special occasions, it's made from rice cooked with butter, sugar, and raisins.

Dining Tips :

  • Most Tibetan dishes are rich and heavy, given the need for high energy in the cold and high-altitude regions. If you're not accustomed to such a diet, it's a good idea to start slowly.
  • While in major cities like Lhasa, you’ll also find a range of other cuisines, including Nepali, Indian, and Sichuanese.

Tibetan food is a reflection of its people's resilience and adaptation to their environment. While visiting Tibet with Luxury Holidays Nepal, immersing yourself in the local culinary scene will not only tantalize your taste buds but also offer a deeper understanding of Tibetan culture and way of life.

Currency Used in Tibet

In Tibet, the official currency is the Chinese Yuan Renminbi (CNY) , often simply referred to as the "Yuan". This is consistent throughout Tibet as it is an autonomous region of China. Here's what travelers need to know about money matters when visiting Tibet:

Banknotes and Coins : The Yuan comes in various denominations. Banknotes include 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 Yuan, while coins can be found in denominations of 1 Yuan and then in smaller fractions called jiao (similar to cents). There are 10 jiao in a Yuan.

ATMs : In major cities like Lhasa and Shigatse, ATMs are readily available, and most of them accept international cards. However, it's wise to carry enough cash if you plan to visit remote areas where ATM access might be limited or non-existent.

Credit Cards : Credit cards are becoming more widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops in larger cities. However, in smaller towns and rural areas, cash is still the primary mode of payment. It's always good to ask in advance if credit cards are accepted, especially outside Lhasa.

Currency Exchange : While some hotels in Lhasa might offer currency exchange services, it's generally recommended to exchange money at banks for the best rates. It's advisable to carry some Yuan when entering Tibet, though currency can also be exchanged at airports or major train stations.

Tipping : Tipping is not a widespread practice in China, including Tibet. However, it's becoming more common to tip tour guides and drivers, especially in the tourism sector. If you're traveling with a tour operator like Luxury Holidays Nepal, you can ask for guidelines on appropriate tipping amounts.

Receipts : Always keep receipts after making purchases, especially for larger amounts. This can be helpful if you need to exchange or return items.

Bargaining : Bargaining is common in markets and some shops. It's part of the shopping culture, especially when buying souvenirs. However, always do so politely and remember that for many vendors, this is their primary source of income.

Being informed about the currency and general money matters can ensure a smoother travel experience in Tibet. Luxury Holidays Nepal always encourages travelers to be prepared and to reach out if they have questions or need advice on financial matters during their Tibetan journey.

Visiting Mount Everest's Base Camp in Tibet

Mount Everest, locally known as "Qomolangma", meaning "Mother Goddess of the Universe" in Tibetan, has base camps on both its southern side in Nepal and its northern side in Tibet. The Tibetan base camp offers a unique perspective of the majestic peak. If Everest is on your bucket list, here’s what you need to know about visiting its northern base camp:

Location : Everest Base Camp in Tibet (EBC) is located at an altitude of about 5,200 meters (17,060 ft). It offers a stunning view of the north face of Mount Everest.

Best Time to Visit : The optimal periods are from late April to June and September to October. During these times, the weather is relatively stable, and the visibility is good. The winter months can be extremely cold, while July and August might see more rainfall.

Getting There :

  • The journey to EBC usually starts from Lhasa, passing through Shigatse and Tingri. The drive from Lhasa to EBC can take about two days with an overnight stop typically in Shigatse.
  • The last stretch involves a trek or a short drive from the tourist camp to the actual base camp.

Accommodation : Rongbuk Monastery, near EBC, offers basic guesthouse facilities. Additionally, tented accommodations, run by locals, are available during warmer months. These tents often have stoves for warmth and offer simple meals. It's essential to note that facilities are quite basic, given the remote location.

Permits : To visit EBC in Tibet, you'll need the Tibet Travel Permit and the Alien's Travel Permit. If you're traveling with a tour operator like Luxury Holidays Nepal, they will typically handle all the necessary permits for you.

Altitude Sickness : Given the high altitude, there's a risk of altitude sickness. It's crucial to acclimatize properly, stay hydrated, and be aware of the symptoms. Carrying appropriate medication and oxygen canisters can be beneficial.

Attractions :

  • Rongbuk Monastery : The highest monastery globally, it provides a unique spiritual backdrop to the towering Everest.
  • Sunrise and Sunset Views : The sight of Everest during these times is simply magical. The golden hues of the sun on the snow-capped peak create a mesmerizing panorama.

Responsible Tourism : It's crucial to minimize environmental impact. Carry back any trash, respect local customs and traditions, and always prioritize the fragile ecosystem of the region.

Preparation :

  • Ensure you have warm clothing, even during the summer months. The weather can be unpredictable, with cold winds even during warmer days.
  • Personal necessities like sunblock, sunglasses, and lip balm are a must due to the strong UV rays at such altitudes.

Visiting Everest Base Camp in Tibet is an experience of a lifetime, blending awe-inspiring natural beauty with spiritual serenity. With proper planning and the expertise of a trusted partner like Luxury Holidays Nepal, it promises to be a journey that will be etched in your memory forever.

After 2hrs’ drive, around the bend appears the glittering turquoise Yamdrok Lake; Following the winding road along the holy lake, we will reach Gampala pass (4790 m), where you can enjoy the stunning panorama of Yamdrok with the backdrop of snowy Mt. Nyenchen Khangsar (7191m). You may also pet the tamed Tibetan mastiff for a lovely shot.

After passing Nagarze, the massive Karola Glacier comes into sight. Stop briefly to view this incredible land glaciers cascading from the peak, right beside the highway. Then, the continuing journey will take us to Manla Reservoir where you can enjoy the turquoise lake and hang the auspicious prayer flags at Simila Pass (4200m). Soon, the awe-inspiring Gyantse looms ahead. Here we are. Gyantse, the third largest city connecting Lhasa with Shigatse.

Visit the famous Pelkor Monastery where multiple Tibetan Buddhism schools coexist in a single monastery; climb multi-story Gyantse Kumbum Stupa, the symbol of Gyantse County, for an amazing vista of Gyantse fortress. With more time to spend, you may take a leisurely stroll in the old street nearby. Shortly after one and a half hour drive, we will finally reach Shigatse(3900m), Tibet’s second largest city and the gateway to Mt. Everest.

tibet luxury tour

One of the features of Tibet travel is that usually a long drive is involved between two tourist attractions, esp. traveling beyond Lhasa. To our VIP clients, we offer comfy travel kits, such as neck pillow, eye mask, and ear plugs for your easy ride. You may also download hours of crime podcasts or your favorite music in your Iphone for the pastime.

Our drivers will stop many times and find the best vantage point for you to enjoy Yamdrok Lake; the guide will properly choose the restaurant for lunch at noon.

To take photos with Tibetan mastiff or with well-dressed Tibetans at Karola Glaciers, the locals will charge some fees. You may refuse it if you don’t want to. In summer, we may visit traditional Barley Mill and view the landscape of Barley Field in Shigatse.

Day 5: Make it to Everest Base Camp (5200m) (around 350km, 7-8hrs)

  • Visit the golden statue of Future Buddha and assembly hall in Tashilunpo Monastery;
  • Gaze at top 4 highest peaks at renowned Gawu La Pass (5198m);
  • Marvel at the sublime Mt. Everest at EBC;
  • Spend the night in traditional Yak tent at EBC;
  • Enjoy the stunning galaxy at night;

Have an early start to visit the celebrated Tashilunpo Monastery, home to successive Panchen Lamas; roam over the alleys of this massive Buddhist academy and explore the tremendous golden statue of Future Buddha (26.2m high) and visit the golden stupas of Panchen Lamas and Amitabha Buddha; you may even join the monk’s chanting at assembly hall or quietly watch the monk debate at courtyard.

Then, we will leave Shigatse for EBC. The long yet exhilarating drive (350km) promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience to you. The idyllic farmland scene gradually gives way to the barren land and rolling Himalayan Range.

Feel the adrenaline rush as you follow the dozens of hairpin bends to awe-inspiring Gawu La Pass (5198m), where top 4 highest peaks along the Himalayas may take your breath away. Stay briefly here for an epic selfie with the giants of the world.

The final leg of the journey will take your past Rongbuk Monastery (5154m) to the tented camp of EBC (5200m) nearby. Enjoy your stay in a traditional yak tent; at night, if you dare to brave the cold, get out of the cozy tent to enjoy the stunning galaxy above the EBC which will make your jaw drop.

tibet luxury tour

Famous Thangka unfolding ceremony will be held on Jul 14, 2019 at Tashilunpo; if you still have time, enjoying the kora route around Tashilunpo Monastery will give you the spectacular vista of Shigatse Dzong.

Our guide will stop at Lhatse to get travel formalities (alien’s travel permit) for you to visit EBC and the lunch will also be arranged at Lhatse.

Due to the altitude ascent, you may feel shortness of breath or dizziness. Our well-trained Tibetan guide has oxygen supply prepared for you and ensure your travel safety by metering your oxygen saturation sporadically; even the oxygen chamber is ready for treating acute altitude sickness.

Due to the extreme altitude and remoteness of EBC, the lodging amenities and food are very basic. So, do play down your expectation. The epic view will make it up for your ordeal. You may also prepare some snacks or food in Shigatse before leaving for EBC. Do wear enough down jacket and headwear or other protection for the chilly wind, and only filthy pit toilet is available, so try avoiding it unless it’s necessary.

Tented camps at EBC are available from mid-April to mid-Oct. Other than that, the humble Rongbuk guesthouse is the only option.

Day 6: Head West to Saga (around 450km, 7-8hrs)

  • Enjoy the close-up view of the breathtaking sunrise over Mt. Everest;
  • Explore the world’s highest Buddhist compound;
  • Receive a certificate for making it to EBC;

Have an early rise for the dramatic spectacle of sunrise over the summit of Mt. Everest; you will find that you are not alone for the long-awaited sunrise over the world’s highest peak, together with dozens of well-equipped photographers. Do bundle up for the biting wind outside.

Later, stroll to tour the legendary Rongbuk Monastery (5154m), the world’s highest Buddhist site where pious nuns and monks coexist. You will also be awarded a certificate for making it to EBC.

Say farewell to the lofty Mt. Everest through the rear mirror as the tour vehicle runs westward to Saga County. The route to Saga takes us right past the stunning Lake Peiku Tso, which lies at 4,591 meters above sea level, which is surrounded by the high mountains of the Himalayas. One of those high mountains is Mount Shishapangma (8,012m), the 14th highest peak in the world, and the only peak above 8,000 meters that is wholly inside Tibet. As we drive along the highway towards Saga, the mountain is clearly visible to the north.

tibet luxury tour

We even prepare binoculars for you to better enjoy the vista of Mt. Everest; the slope of Rongbuk Monastery would be a great vantage point to photograph Mt. Everest.

Western Tibet, esp. Ngari Prefecture, has much higher altitude (averaging above 4500m) and more barren land than the central and eastern Tibet. The amenities and resource are very limited. However, we keep updating our service every year and do our utmost to arrange the best lodging available in relevant counties.

Day 7: Keep Traveling North to Darchen via Holy Manasarovar Lake (around 493km, 7-8hrs)

  • Stunning view of the Yarlung Tsangpo Valley;
  • Brief stopover at picturesque desert at Zhongba County;
  • Stroll along holy Manasarovar Lake and enjoy seagull there;
  • Get amazing vista of Mt. Kailash;

Take a short time to explore the views of the Yarlung Tsangpo River Valley, the longest river in Tibet and the source of the mighty Brahmaputra River. Then we will head out on the road to drive the 493 kilometers to Lake Manasarovar and Darchen, at the foot of Mount Kailash.

The valley between the mountains of the Himalayas and the Gangdise ranges quickly changes from lush grasslands to a desolate desert valley, and the road to Darchen skirts along the edge of this as it passes through Zhongba County, the largest county in Shigatse Prefecture. The views of the massive peaks on either side of the valley are a stark contrast to the desolate landscape in the valley itself, and the scenery in this remote desert area is spectacular.

While the area may be remote, the road passes through several small Tibetan village communities, in both the grassland area and the desert area, and we will have the chance to stop briefly at some and get out to take a look.

Before reaching Darchen, we will pass through the small town of Hor Qu, on the northeastern shores of Lake Manasarovar. We will stop at the lakeshore for a while to enjoy the beauty of what is considered to be the most sacred lake in Tibet. Lying at an altitude of 4,590 meters, and is said to be the location where Maya Devi conceived Buddha.

Before it gets dark, we will make the last part of the journey to Darchen (4,575m), the small village community that lies at the foot of Mount Kailash.

tibet luxury tour

Darchen and Lake Manasarovar are at much higher altitudes than most of the rest of Tibet, with the exception of the passes that we travel over and EBC itself. You need to be aware of your condition at higher altitudes like this, and be conscious of the possible symptoms of altitude sickness. Our Tibetan guide will keep a watchful eye on your healthy condition and oxygen supply is readily available.

Hotels in Ngari this far north can be a little basic, far from the luxury of even the lowest rated guesthouse in Lhasa. However, it is well worth a little hardship for the divine experience around Lake Manasarovar and Mt.Kailash.

It’s highly recommended to travel light for the next 3-day kora around Mt.Kailash. Take enough thermal clothes because the snow and gale on mountain passes are so unpredictable. We offer trekking poles, yak caravan, horse and porter booking for easier walk. If you need them, tell your guide in advance.

Day 8: Trek from Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery (6hrs, 20km, 200m ascent)

  • Walk with prostrating Tibetan pilgrims;
  • Pass through the prayer square;
  • Enjoy the stunning vista of the pyramid-shaped summit of Mt.Kailash;

Begin our first-day trek from the Darchen; for the initial 4km’s trek, try to find your own pace of walking, and follow the guide to reaching prayer square. You will see fluttering prayer flags hanging around the two legs pagoda. Crossing the pagada, the trail leads to Lha-Chu Valley. From here on, the narrow Lha-chu River provides a steady supply of water all the way to Dira-Puk Monastery.

After passing a series of ruined chörtens and a number of long mani (prayer) walls, the trail reaches a small bridge across the Lha-chu at 4710m. Just take your time between Chuku Monastery and Dira-Puk Monastery as this stretch has some of the best scenery of the entire kora.

Local Guesthouse at Dira-puk Monastery

The first day of the trek is mild and moderate. Do not disturb the prostrating Tibetan pilgrims along the way. It’s a holy Buddhist practice in Tibet. It’ better to closely follow the whole team. If you any discomfort symptom appears, do not hesitate to reach your guide for time treatment. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Day 9: Trek from Dirapuk Monastery to Dzultripuk Monastery ( 7-8h, 18km, 550m ascent, 600 descent)

  • Pass the Sky Burial Site;
  • Trek through Dolma La Pass(5648m);
  • Enjoy Tuoji Lake where Shival’s wife Parvati used to bath there;

Head off to the east, crossing the Lha-chu again by bridge and climbing on to a moraine to meet the trail on the east bank. It is a long ascent to Drölma-la, so bring water to last a few hours.

Walking about two hours, you will reach a rocky expanse of Shiva-tsal (5330m). Pilgrims are supposed to undergo a symbolic death at this point, entering in the realm of the Lord of the Dead, until they reach the top of the Drölma-la and are reborn again.

About 30 minutes from Shiva-tsal the trail turns eastward for the completion of the ascent to the highest point of this train - 5630m Drölma-la. Weather permitting, most pilgrims and trekkers pause at the pass for a rest and refreshments before starting the steep descent. It takes approximately an hour to make the long and very steep 400m descent to the grassy banks of the Tuoji Lake.

About three hours on, grassy fields appear alongside the river affording those with tents endless spots to set up camp. An hour or so from the start of the camping fields is the Dzutul-puk Monastery (4790m).

Local Guesthouse at Dzutul-puk Monastery

Day2 of the trek is the most challenging one as you will traverse Dolma La Pass (5648m), the highest pass during 3day Kailash kora. And many steep ascent and descent are involved, be steady and slow. Closely follow guide’s guidance to finish the day trek.

Do not stay at Dolma La Pass for too long, the thin air and strong wind might be harmful. Teahouses are available during today’s trek.

Day 10: Easy Trek from Dzultripuk Monastery to Darchen (3-4 hours, 14km, 150m descent)

  • Leisurely walk flanked by rugged canyon;
  • Enjoy the piles of Mani Stones;

From the monastery, the trail follows the river closely for an hour or so then climbs above the river and enters a narrow canyon. When the canyon narrows look for holes gouged into the cliff walls. These are not natural but made by pilgrims looking for holy stones. Also, look for prayer flags festooned across the river, and in the far distance the blue waters of the lake Raksas Tal.

When the trail emerges onto the Barkha plain, it’s now an easy one-hour walk back to Darchen along a dirt road. And you will finish one of the most important pilgrimages in Asia.

Be careful not to sprain your ankle while walking in the canyon.

Day 11: Travel back from Darchen to Saga (493km, 7-8hrs)

  • Enjoy the vista of Manasarovar Lake;

The road from Darchen to Saga is a long one, and travels back along the same route we took to come to Darchen, passing over the Mayomla Pass (5,112m), where we can stop for photos of the nearby Mt. Naimonanyi (7,694m). We will also pass through several small local villages on the beautiful grasslands to the south of Manasarovar, in the Saga valley between the Gangdise and Himalaya Ranges. We will reach Saga in the lake afternoon.

Day 12: Saga to Shigatse (448km, 8-9 hrs.)

  • Enjoy the vista of Mount Shishapangma (8,012m) and the beauty of Lake Peiku Tso

The long drive back to Shigatse from Saga can be arduous, even for those not driving. However, the delights of this stretch of the road is the amazing panoramic views of the mighty Himalayas to the west as you drive east. The views include those of the 14 th highest peak, Mount Shishapangma (8,012m), which lies wholly in Tibet, the beauty of Lake Peiku Tso, and the amazing sights of wild kiang and Tibetan antelopes.

Enjoy a good rest at luxury hotel for tomorrow’s Tibet train journey back to Lhasa.

Day 13: Enjoy Tibet Train from Shigatse back to Lhasa (around 253km, 2:35hrs)

  • View the picturesque highland scenery from a different perspective;
  • Enjoy a farewell dinner;

Hop on the scenic Tibet train for a swift ride back to Lhasa. The train takes about 2:35hrs and has 3 departures to reach Lhasa from Shigatse. You may have a good rest or wander around in the daytime and board the train in the later afternoon.

The train ride is smooth and comfortable, and takes you along a slightly different route back to the Tibetan capital, giving you great views of the landscapes and the famous Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains and closer encounter with local Tibetan passengers.

In the evening, enjoy a lavish farewell dinner and toast for your successful visit to EBC and the completion of holy Mt. Kailash kora.

Breakfast, Lunch and Farewell Banquet

Tibet train tickets can be hard to get in the peak periods, as the train is a popular travel route for locals as well as tourists. If the soft sleep tickets are sold out, hard sleeper ticket is also a good option during the short ride.

The guide will inform you of the pick-up time for the airport or railway station the next day.
