Dramatic scenery.

You’re constantly aware of the power of nature in Hawaii, where the lush scenery is like something out of another world. Jagged cliffs, beaches of glittering black sand, ribbon-like waterfalls cascading from emerald escarpments, and smoldering volcanoes catch your eye at every turn. You’ll see pounding surf, limpid lagoons, and sometimes a snowy cap on the highest mountains. Explore bamboo forests and plunging gorges. At night, look up at the astonishing array of stars.

Unique Culture

Hawaiian people feel a deep connection to nature and embrace the spirit of Aloha, which means living in harmony with nature and the people around you. Beliefs are expressed through beautiful chants, music, graceful hula, and art. Stories relayed from one generation to the next invoke the spirits and the historical events that have shaped the islands. Natural phenomena are understood as the work of gods and goddesses, and many locations and animals are regarded as sacred.

Intriguing Cuisine

Hawaii boasts a unique cuisine, with influences from Polynesia, Japan, and America. Taste fresh tuna poke bowls, sweet pineapple, and juicy strawberry papaya. Try lomi lomi, salted salmon with tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers. Sample local chocolate and enjoy coffee made from Kona beans. Experience everything from delicate sushi and sashimi to moco loco. Look out for spam, a local favorite, served in wontons or as Spam musubi with rice and nori.

Top Hawaii FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Hawaii?

The best time of year to visit Hawaii is from March to September, when you can expect warm temperatures and less rain. Hawaii is, however, a year-round destination, with great snorkeling, hiking, and beach life at any time of year.

How long does a typical cruise last?

Our Hawaiian cruises last from nine to 13 nights, sailing between Vancouver and Honolulu. You could also choose a transpacific cruise, starting or ending in Honolulu. These longer voyages range from 16 to 19 nights.

What are the main ports of call?

The main ports of call in Hawaii are Honolulu, from where our cruises start or finish, and Hilo and Kona, both on the Big Island. On some itineraries, you’ll also enjoy scenic cruising along the Napali Coast on Kauai, a sacred landscape of emerald cliffs, pristine beaches, and jagged mountain ridges. Some cruises also visit Astoria in Oregon before the Pacific crossing to Hawaii.

What should I pack?

Hawaii is a tropical destination with year-round warm weather and high humidity. Pack for beach days, and if you’re an active kind of traveler, hikes and adventures. Swimwear, sunblock, coverups, beach shoes, a sun hat, and proper footwear for hiking should all be on your list.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theatre.

Can I fly to Hawaii and then cruise the islands?

Our cruises to Hawaii operate one-way either to or from Honolulu and Vancouver (or Sydney, Australia in terms of transpacific voyages). So yes, if you pick a Honolulu to Vancouver departure, you can easily fly to Hawaii and spend a few days exploring before embarking on your Celebrity ship.

Do I need a passport?

For Hawaii cruises that either begin or end in Vancouver, Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.

If you have chosen to visit Hawaii as part of a transpacific cruise, you’ll also need a passport.

Non-U.S. citizens also require a passport for entry into both the U.S. and Canada (and the countries visited on our transpacific cruises). It is your responsibility to check your government’s website for the latest information about entry and visa requirements.

What kind of activities and excursions are available?

Hawaii offers a wonderful range of activities and experiences. From Kona, join a snorkel or submarine tour to admire the spectacular underwater world. Meet local producers and try island-made coffee and chocolate, or explore the lush interior of the Big Island in a 4x4, stopping to cool off under tumbling waterfalls.

Historic Hilo is also famous as the gateway to magnificent falls and verdant rainforest. Admire the dramatic lava landscapes of the Volcanoes National Park shaped by the still-active Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. In Honolulu, make time to visit Pearl Harbor, or stroll along the iconic Waikiki Beach.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

Donna Heiderstadt

Cruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

day cruise in hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

day cruise in hawaii

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

day cruise in hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

day cruise in hawaii

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

day cruise in hawaii

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

day cruise in hawaii

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

day cruise in hawaii

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

day cruise in hawaii

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

If you’re looking to make an exotic destination your next vacation, let’s talk about the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of Hawaii. The answers are as follows: visit Hawaii on a Carnival cruise (of course), and… visit Hawaii because this place is simply spectacular! Take a Hawaii cruise and explore exotic locations spread across four islands — the Hawaiian island chain is home to names you know, like Maui, Kona and Honolulu. These spots feature postcard-worthy waterfalls, volcanoes and some of the world’s most stunning, sunning beaches. You’ll find these spread across an island chain so otherworldly that you may forget you’re in the states! Best of all, that postcard you’re sure to send home will require only domestic postage.

  • Experience some of the world's most famous beaches.
  • Get up-close with a volcanic mountain.
  • Hula it up at a real luau.

These 8 Cruises Make It Easy to Explore Hawaii on Your Next Vacation

Here are our picks for some of the best Hawaii cruises.

day cruise in hawaii

The islands of Hawaii are popular with families, couples, retirees, groups of friends, and really anyone who enjoys warm weather, tropical scenery, and the Aloha spirit of the 50th state. Each island offers a different climate, attractions, environment, and style, and even on the same island, there are major variations depending on location. On Oahu, for example, there's bustling Honolulu on the south shore and the more secluded surfing paradise of the North Shore . On the Big Island, the Hilo and Puna regions on the east coast are wet and heavily forested, whereas the Kona region, on the west coast, tends to be much drier.

Visitors to Hawaii, especially first-timers, will want to experience as much of the islands as possible, and a cruise is one way to accomplish that. You can embark from any of several ports on the West Coast (or within Hawaii itself), and the convenience of not worrying about hotel changes or local transportation is a plus. Below are some of the best cruises to see Hawaii . Dates, prices, amenities, and itineraries vary, so picking a cruise requires some planning and research. That's always part of the fun, and we hope this list will inspire you to get started.

10 Day Pride of America Hawaii Cruise & Land Combo

day cruise in hawaii

Itinerary Details

This unique Hawaiian cruise gives you overnight stays in Maui and Kauai and visits to O'ahu and the Big Island of Hawaii. You’ll be on island time as you discovering cascading waterfalls, active volcanoes, black, green and white sand beaches, historic sites and unspoiled nature.

10 Day Pride of America Hawaii Cruise: Honolulu to Honolulu

This 10-day cruise takes you to the major islands of Hawaii aboard the five-star cruise vessel, Pride of America .

Begin your visit in Honolulu on the island of O'ahu. Honolulu is the largest city in Hawaii and a national treasure. Visit the only royal palace in the United States, stroll down Ala Moana or Waikiki Beach, or climb the Diamond Head for a stunning view of the island. Pay your respects at the Pearl Harbor and National Memorial Cemetery. Be sure to enjoy the vibrant food culture of Chinatown and the iconic sight of Aloha Tower before embarking on Pride of America .

Pride of America  is the only Norwegian cruise liner that sails round trips from Honolulu all year, letting you enjoy a Hawaiian vacation on your own schedule. Native Hawaiian ambassadors will help you appreciate the rich culture of the archipelago and the 15 restaurants, 12 bars and lounges, and excellent family accommodations such as an aqua park and bowling alley will fill your time between islands.

From Honolulu head to the island of Maui and the port of Kahului. Maui is perfect for adventure. Zip line down mountainsides, bike through the foothills or snorkel alongside turtles in the waters. Maui offers plenty of opportunities for your chosen leisure, whether that’s kayaking alongside Humpback whales in Makewa Bay, aiming for the green on one of its golf courses or relaxing on its many beaches.

On the Big Island of Hawaii you’ll see the verdant town of Hilo, where flowers line the sidewalks. Hawaii gets the most rainfall of anywhere in the United States and the landscape shows it. Green seems to cover everything as far as the eye can see. In Kona, you can enjoy the warm and crystal blue waters that make Hawaii such a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, surfing and anything relating to water. For a look at the volcanic foundation of the Hawaiian Islands, head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where you can see the active volcano, Kilauea Volcano, and the Mauna Loa lava flow.

Your last stop before returning to Oahu and Honolulu is the island of Kauai. Anchoring at Nawiliwili port, you’ll have a perfect chance to explore the most beautiful island in Hawaii. Often called “The Garden Island,” Kauai is covered in natural wonder. The Kokee Mountains seemingly fill the sky while the Haena Rainforest covers everything beneath it. Kauai is also a perfect spot to have a luau and see how traditional Hawaiian life moves to its own rhythms.

This 10-day cruise offers unmatched comfort on an exploration of some of the most gorgeous islands on the planet.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

How Much Is A Cruise To Hawaii? A Complete Breakdown Of Costs

' src=

Save money on your next flight

Skyscanner is the world’s leading flight search engine, helping you find the cheapest flights to destinations all over the world.

Dreaming of a cruise to the tropical Hawaiian islands but wondering what it will cost? With flight, accommodations, food, activities and more to budget for, planning a Hawaii cruise vacation can quickly get complicated.

If you’re short on time, here’s a quick answer: Most 7-night Hawaii cruises start around $600 per person for an interior stateroom, but expect to budget about $1,500 to $2,000+ per person when you factor in flights, pre/post hotels, tours, drinks, tips and more extras .

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll break down every component that goes into the cost of a Hawaii cruise so you can set an accurate vacation budget.

Cruise Fare Costs

Interior stateroom prices.

Interior staterooms are the most affordable option for cruise accommodations. The average price for an interior stateroom on a 7-night Hawaii cruise is $600-$800 per person . However, prices can be lower during shoulder seasons.

Interior rooms offer comfortable accommodations without a view to the outside of the ship.

Some tips to find the best interior room rates include:

  • Book early for the lowest fares before prices start increasing closer to sail date
  • Be flexible with travel dates if possible to take advantage of sales or special promotions
  • Consider repositioning cruises when ships are moved between regions with very low rates to fill the ship

Oceanview & Balcony Stateroom Prices

Average prices for oceanview rooms range from $800-$1200 per person , while balcony staterooms start around $1000-$1500+ per person for a week-long Hawaii sailing. These rooms offer additional amenities like a window to the sea or a private veranda to relax on.

Ways to save on oceanview and balcony rooms:

  • Book a Guaranteed room category to receive a discount over choosing a specific room location
  • Watch for occasional two-for-one balcony promotions or reduced deposits
  • Sail during shoulder seasons like April/May and September/October for lower rates

Suite Prices

Cruise ship suites offer extra amenities, upgraded furnishings, and plenty of space. Prices for basic suites generally range from $2000-$4000 per person . Larger specialty suites with unique features can cost upwards of $10,000 or more for an luxurious experience.

While suites carry a premium price, they offer plenty of extra comfort and amenities. Ways to save include:

  • Book far in advance when suites first open for booking
  • Inquire about special perks included like free airfare or exclusive suite guest areas

Additional Cruise Costs

When budgeting for a cruise to Hawaii, it’s important to factor in costs beyond just your fare. From drink packages to shore excursions, you’ll likely be opening your wallet for various add-ons during your voyage. Being prepared can help avoid sticker shock.

Onboard Beverage Packages

Quenching your thirst on a cruise often comes with a hefty price tag if you pay per drink. According to Cruise Critic , a soda can cost around $3, beer about $6 , and mixed drinks from $8-15 each . To save money, many cruisers opt for beverage packages covering unlimited drinks for a set daily rate.

Prices vary by cruise line, but expect packages to run roughly $60+ per person/per day.

Specialty Dining

While cruises include meals in main dining rooms, specialty restaurants onboard come with an extra fee, typically $20-50 per guest . From teppanyaki to French cuisine, these upscale venues offer elevated dishes and white tablecloth service.

If you want to indulge on your Hawaii cruise without overspending, specialty dining 1-2 nights is often sufficient.

Shore Excursions

One of the best parts of cruising Hawaii is exploring its gorgeous islands. Booking shore excursions through your cruise line provides ease and peace of mind.

According to AFAR , average costs range from $50 for a brief island drive to $200+ for snorkeling adventures or helicopter tours.

For budget-friendly sightseeing, opt for self-guided excursions instead of those with guides.

Spa Treatments & Salon Services

What better place to pamper yourself than on vacation in paradise? From massages to manicures, cruise ship spas offer extensive menus of relaxation and beauty services.

Per SmarterTravel , industry averages are $129 for a 50-minute massage, $45 for a basic manicure, and $105+ for hair services.

While gratifying, these personalized treatments add up fast, so set a budget beforehand if you plan to partake.

Capturing memorable moments during your Hawaii cruise likely ranks high on your priority list. However, all those professional photos sold onboard come at fairly steep rates.

According to Cruise Line , print photo prices typically start at $20 for a 6×8′′, scaling up to $35 for two 8×10′′ prints.

To save, purchase just 1-2 favorite photos instead of entire folios.

Showing your gratitude via tips is customary on cruise ships. Guidelines provided by cruise lines suggest gratuity amounts around $14-16 per person/per day for room stewards and dining waitstaff.

At the end of your sailing, these recommended gratuities are automatically applied to your onboard account, but can be adjusted as desired.

Ultimately, how much you tip comes down to your satisfaction with the service.

Miscellaneous Extras

By understanding additional expenditures that may arise, cruisers can allocate funds accordingly and enjoy their Hawaiian getaways without fiscal frustration. The destination’s natural splendor and onboard hospitality make any extra costs worthwhile!

Pre & Post-Cruise Hotel Costs

Waikiki hotels.

Waikiki is a top destination for pre or post-cruise stays due to its beautiful beaches, dining, and shopping. Hotel prices can vary widely based on location, amenities, and time of year, but some average costs are:

  • Budget hotels like Waikiki Beachside Hostel or Aqua Bamboo & Spa – $100 – $250 per night
  • Moderate hotels like Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel or Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort – $250 – $400 per night
  • Luxury hotels like Moana Surfrider or Royal Hawaiian Hotel – $500+ per night

The most expensive periods are typically during holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and spring break. Early December and January see lower average prices. Many hotels offer cruise packages with discounted rates and perks like free breakfast and airport transfers.

Luxury Resorts in Maui or Kauai

For a more lavish pre or post-cruise vacation, travelers should consider Maui or Kaui’s luxury beach resorts. Some top options include:

  • Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea – Rooms from $895 per night
  • Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa – Rooms from $559 per night
  • The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua in Maui – Rooms from $899 per night

These resorts provide amenities like multiple pools, hot tubs, spas, golf courses, fine dining, kids clubs, and stunning grounds. Rates fluctuate less compared to Waikiki hotels but are higher on average. Many also offer cruise packages.

So whether you’re looking for an affordable pre/post-cruise stay in lively Waikiki or a luxurious, relaxing resort vacation on Maui or Kauai, Hawaii has excellent options to fit a range of budgets.

Airfare to Hawaii

When planning a cruise to Hawaii, one of the major expenses to consider is airfare. Here is a breakdown of what to expect when booking flights:

Departing from the Mainland US

Flights from major mainland airports like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, etc. can range from $300 to $800 roundtrip during off-peak seasons. Expect to pay more during popular travel weeks like spring break and summer vacations, where rates often exceed $1,000.

Try searching for deals on low-cost carriers like Southwest, JetBlue, and Alaska Airlines. Their nonstop routes to Hawaii are very competitively priced.

Inter-Island Flights

If your cruise itinerary has port stops across multiple islands, you’ll likely need to purchase inter-island flights too. One-way fares between islands average $70-$150 per person.

Island hopper passes can offer discounts if you are traveling to more than one neighboring island. Hawaiian Airlines and Mokulele Airlines offer these special multi-island tickets.

Tips for Saving

Here are some tips to keep airfare costs in check:

  • Book early – Prices usually start high and come down as departure approaches, but they can also rise if demand increases
  • Be flexible with dates/airports – Leaving a day earlier/later or using alternate airports can reveal much lower fares
  • Use miles/points – Most airlines allow redemptions to Hawaii, which can help offset cash fares
  • Consider connecting flights – Though less convenient, stopping in cities like San Diego first before continuing to Hawaii can mean huge ticket savings

Following some of these guidelines can lead to substantial discounts, making a Hawaii cruise vacation more affordable.

Ground Transportation in Hawaii

Taxis & rideshares.

Taxis and rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are convenient ways to get around the islands of Hawaii. Prices can vary depending on the island and destination, but expect to pay around $3-5 per mile . The base fare just to get in a taxi usually starts at $3-5 too.

For example , a 10-mile taxi ride on Oahu could cost around $30-50 . The same ride using UberX might be a little cheaper at around $25-40 . And on smaller islands like Lanai or Molokai, fares may be higher due to less competition among drivers.

Surge pricing can also impact costs with rideshares, especially during peak times. And highway tolls may apply on certain routes, adding a couple extra dollars per ride. Islands like Maui also assess a small excise tax on rides. So be sure to budget accordingly.

The convenience of taxis and rideshares comes at a premium. But when weighed against the cost of renting a car, they can still be an affordable ground transportation option in Hawaii for shorter trips and airport transfers.

Rental Cars

Rental cars provide maximum flexibility for getting around Hawaii’s islands. Major car rental companies like Alamo, Budget, Hertz, Avis, and National all have locations across Hawaii.

Compact cars are available for around $30-70 per day depending on the company, location, and time of year. Expect rates to be a bit higher on some islands. For example, renting a car on Lanai or Molokai for a couple days could easily top $100 per day with limited competition.

When estimating your rental car costs, be sure to account for taxes and fees which can add $5-10 extra per day. Optional add-ons like GPS rentals, additional drivers, and child safety seats will also increase your rate if needed.

And while basic liability insurance is usually included, most visitors opt for added Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) to lower liability for damage to the rental car – costing around $15-25 extra per day.

By combining the base rate, taxes, fees, and insurance, renting a compact car for a week could easily top $350 per week or more. While not cheap, having your own set of rental car wheels still often beats relying on buses, taxis, or tours while exploring Hawaii’s scenic highlights.

As you can see, the starting price for a Hawaii cruise is just the tip of the iceberg. But while the total costs may be higher than you initially expected, a Hawaiian cruise vacation remains an incredible travel experience that’s well worth the splurge.

By knowing all the potential expenses involved with a cruise to the islands and budgeting accordingly, you can avoid any monetary surprises and simply relax and enjoy paradise afloat in the Pacific. Aloha!

Cruise ships under investigation after sailing illegally close to Hawaii's protected coast

H awaii state officials are investigating two cruise ships that sailed illegally close to Kauai’s protected Na Pali Coastline, according to an emailed statement by the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) on Tuesday.

“Images of the ships have been circulating on social media, and vigilant kamaaina (locals) alerted the authorities to the issue,” the release said.

In the statement, HTA said it is in contact with the cruise lines as other cruise operators who sail to Hawaii to “underscore the importance of compliance with all state and local regulations in our islands.”

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), which governs Hawaii’s nearshore waters, declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.

DLNR and HTA did not confirm which cruise lines were sailing “much closer to Kauaʻi’s north shore than allowed by state regulations.” However, posts on social media show one of the ships to be the Celebrity Edge, which is operated by Celebrity Cruises and has the capacity to hold almost 3,000 passengers.

“We have robust policies in place to maintain compliance with local regulations around the world," a spokesperson for Celebrity's parent company, Royal Caribbean Group, said in an emailed statement. "We will continue to assess our policies and take necessary steps to ensure we continue to operate in the most responsible manner possible."

With striking cliffs, waterfalls and lush valleys, the Na Pali Coast is one of Hawaii's iconic shorelines. This is partially due to its appearance in popular movies like, "King Kong," "Pirates of the Caribbean," and "Jurassic Park."

Home to endemic flora and fauna, the state park comprises over 3,500 protected acres. It is also a sacred place where the ancient Native Hawaiians once lived, and their heiaus (temples) and petroglyphs can still be found there today.

The waters surrounding the coastline are also protected. Since 1988, state law prohibits commercial vessels with 50 or more passengers from operating “within the Na Pali Coast ocean waters.” These waters are defined as 3,000 feet seaward along the eastern boundary of Moloaa Bay and the southernmost boundary of the Na Pali Coast State Park.

DLNR’s Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement told Hawaii News Now it received “numerous reports” from residents who spotted the cruise ships sailing in “very shallow water” at approximately only 1,000 feet offshore last week.

“Some of the shots that were taken from the air actually showed the sand being disturbed at the bottom, so all of these environmental impacts that it created was very upsetting to me,” Presley Wann, a Kauai resident, told Hawaii News Now.

State investigating cruise ships anchored near Na Pali Coast

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources is investigating whether a cruise ship, possibly two, recently anchored too closely to the Na Pali Coast on Kauai, following complaints.

Approximately a week ago, DLNR said, community members called in concerns about a large cruise ship anchored very close to the Na Pali Coast. The concerns over the ship said to be the Celebrity Edge, were also posted to social media, with video footage.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority today issued an email saying it is “engaging with government authorities and the cruise industry in the matter of two cruise ships that were much closer to Kauai’s north shore than allowed by state regulations.”

“Images of the ships have been circulating on social media, and vigilant kamaaina alerted the authorities to the issue,” said HTA in its email blast. “The Department of Land and Natural Resources, which governs Hawaii’s near-shore waters on behalf of the people of Hawaii, is investigating.”

HTA said it is also in contact with the cruise lines involved, as well as other cruise operators who visit Hawaii, to “underscore the importance of compliance with all state and local regulations in our islands.”

State laws governing Na Pali Coast ocean waters say “in no case shall a commercial vessel having a passenger carrying capacity of 50 or more passengers be permitted to operate within the Na Pali Coast ocean waters.”

Nor is a commercial operator allowed to embark or disembark passengers along the shoreline within Na Pali Coast ocean waters unless it has been issued a permit by the Board of Land and Natural Resources.

Anyone who believes a boat or ship is operating inappropriately can report it to 808-643-DLNR (3567).

WWII soldiers posthumously receive Purple Heart medals 79 years after fatal plane crash

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii -- The families of five Hawaii men who served in a unit of Japan ese-language linguists during World War II received posthumous Purple Heart medals on behalf of their loved ones on Friday, nearly eight decades after the soldiers died in a plane crash in the final days of the conflict.

“I don’t have words. I’m just overwhelmed,” Wilfred Ikemoto said as he choked up while speaking of the belated honor given to his older brother Haruyuki.

The older Ikemoto was among 31 men killed when their C-46 transport plane hit a cliff while attempting to land in Okinawa, Japan, on Aug. 13, 1945.

“I’m just happy that he got recognized,” Ikemoto said.

Army records indicate only two of the 31 ever received Purple Heart medals, which the military awards to those wounded or killed during action against an enemy.

Researchers in Hawaii and Minnesota recently discovered the omission, leading the Army to agree to issue medals to families of the 29 men who were never recognized. Researchers located families of the five from Hawaii, and now the Army is asking family members of the other 24 men to contact them so their loved ones can finally receive recognition.

The older Ikemoto was the fourth of 10 children and the first in his family to attend college when he enrolled at the University of Hawaii. He was a photographer and developed film in a makeshift darkroom in a bedroom at home.

“I remember him as probably the smartest and most talented in our family,” said Wilfred Ikemoto, who was 10 years old when his brother died.

On board the plane were 12 paratroopers with the 11th Airborne Division, five soldiers in a Counter-intelligence Detachment assigned to the paratroopers, 10 Japanese American linguists in the Military Intelligence Service and four crew members.

They had all flown up from the Philippines to spearhead the occupation of Japan after Tokyo's surrender, said Daniel Matthews, who looked into the ill-fated flight while researching his father's postwar service in the 11th Airborne.

Matthews attributed the Army's failure to recognize all 31 soldiers with medals to administrative oversight in the waning hours of the war. The U.S. had been preparing to invade Japan’s main islands, but it formulated alternative plans after receiving indications Japan was getting ready to surrender. Complicating matters further, there were four different units on the plane.

Wilfred Motokane Jr. said he had mixed feelings after he accepted his father's medal.

“I’m very happy that we’re finally recognizing some people,” he said. “I think it took a long time for it to happen. That’s the one part that I don’t feel that good about, if you will.”

The Hawaii five were all part of the Military Intelligence Service or MIS, a U.S. Army unit made up of mostly Japanese Americans who interrogated prisoners, translated intercepted messages and traveled behind enemy lines to gather intelligence.

They five had been inducted in January 1944 after the MIS, desperate to get more recruits, sent a team to Hawaii to find more linguists, historian Mark Matsunaga said.

Altogether some 6,000 served with the Military Intelligence Service. But much of their work has remained relatively unknown because it was classified until the 1970s.

During the U.S. occupation of Japan, they served crucial roles as liaisons between American and Japanese officials and overseeing regional governments.

Retired Army Gen. Paul Nakasone, who recently stepped down as head of U.S. Cyber Command and the National Security Agency, presented the medals to the families during the ceremony on the banks of Pearl Harbor. Nakasone's Hawaii-born father served in the MIS after the war, giving him a personal connection to the event.

“What these Military Intelligence Service soldiers brought to the occupation of Japan was an understanding of culture that could take what was the vanquished to work with the victor,” Nakasone said. “I’m very proud of all the MIS soldiers not only during combat, but also during the occupation.”

Strong geomagnetic storm reaches Earth, continues through weekend

NOAA space weather forecasters have observed at least seven coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun, with impacts expected to arrive on Earth as early as midday Friday, May 10, and persist through Sunday, May 12, 2024.

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Warning for Friday, May 10. Additional solar eruptions could cause geomagnetic storm conditions to persist through the weekend.

  • The First of Several CMEs reached Earth on Friday, May 10 at 12:37 pm EDT.  The CME was very strong and SWPC quickly issued a series of geomagnetic storm warnings. SWPC observed G4 conditions at 1:39 pm EDT (G3 at 1:08 pm EDT).
  • This storm is ongoing and SWPC will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional warnings as necessary.
This is an unusual and potentially historic event. Clinton Wallace , Director, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center

CMEs are explosions of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun’s corona. They cause geomagnetic storms when they are directed at Earth. Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth’s surface , potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations. SWPC has notified the operators of these systems so they can take protective action.

Geomagnetic storms can also trigger spectacular displays of aurora on Earth . A severe geomagnetic storm includes the potential for aurora to be seen as far south as Alabama and Northern California.
