The Lacs Enlist Murphy Elmore for Down-Home ‘Hellraisers in Heaven’ Video [Exclusive Premiere]

The Lacs join forces with Murphy Elmore for their new "Hellraisers in Heaven" music video, and the clip will resonate with so many fans who share their small-town country roots.

"Hellraisers in Heaven" is aimed at everyone who grew up getting into trouble in their small towns, but getting right by going to church on Sundays — no matter what might have happened Saturday night.

"We were Saturday night ten foot tall bulletproof / Sunday morning hungover, hidin' in a back pew / Asking for forgiveness and redemption / And praying god lets hellraisers in heaven,"  the chorus states.

Elmore says the song stems straight from his own past experience.

"Honestly, this is just the way I grew up. Being from a small Southern Baptist town, if there wasn’t any trouble to get into, there wouldn’t be anything to do," he observes. "You just knew you better be in the pew come Sunday mornin’ either way, or there was gonna be hell to pay."

He was driving back to Nashville from a hunting trip in Georgia when he saw a bunch of people loading coolers into their trucks in a parking lot.

"It just kinda took me back to this old party spot from back home that we all used to go to, and I was thinking about how Saturday nights were the wildest," he says. "But also the hardest, 'cause most of us were only gonna get a few hours of sleep once we got home, 'cause we’d be getting up early Sunday mornin’ to make the service."

The collaboration with the Lacs came about just as naturally as the inspiration for the song.

"Sitting down and having a beer with Murphy told us all we needed to know," the Lacs' Brian King states. "He’s a cool guy, real talented, and we clicked right away."

So much so, in fact, that the Lacs are hitting the road with Murphy for their Hellraisers in Heaven Tour, which launched Feb. 9 and will run through April 29. Dustin Spears also joins the tour as their support act.

"This tour has been a long time in the making, but we're excited to hit the road and raise some hell every night with our fans," the Lacs' Clay Sharpe adds.

Nashville, TN – Billboard-charting country duo and recently RIAA Gold-certified for their single “Dirt Road Dollars” The Lacs have announced their new single in collaboration with Alabama-native singer and songwriter, Murphy Elmore, titled “Hellraisers in Heaven.” Produced by Stephen Van Etten and written by Murphy Elmore, rapper of the duo Clay Sharpe, singer and guitarist of the duo Brian King, Samuel Grayson, Cody Webb, and Brian Davis, “Hellraisers in Heaven” is now available for download here and the music video can be watched here .

Sharpe explained the meaning behind the track, saying, “This song is about that time in your life when you’re just having a good time, but maybe causing a bit of trouble, too. It’s about being rebellious, but not meaning any harm. It’s honest and genuine to our style as artists. I think it’s one where many people will find their own meaning, and personally, it’s one of our best songs yet.”

The lyrics reflect the group’s defiant actions but also show them asking for forgiveness for the said actions: “we didn’t always keep it straight / sometimes we’d bail out of line / standing out at heaven’s gate / I hope they let me inside.”

King spoke of the choice to have Elmore featured on the track, saying, “Sitting down and talking with Murphy, that told us all we needed to know. He is a cool guy and a very talented songwriter and artist.”

Elmore, who alongside King and Sharpe helped co-write the track, added, “My inspiration for the title and lyrics came from my feelings I get from my hometown. I was thinking about how Saturday nights were always the wildest but hardest because most of us only got a few hours of sleep due to church the following Sunday morning. The Lacs brought a really cool, unexpected element to the song, and it fits comfortably into the original fibers of the idea.”

When it comes to the country-rap-rock genre, The Lacs are no stranger to remaining at the top. With over 1 billion streams on Pandora, 535 million YouTube views, and over 400 million streams on Spotify, the duo has built quite the fan base over the years. Rapper of the duo Clay Sharpe and singer/guitarist Brian King made their mark in the music world in 2012 when their album 190 Proof became their first album to break into the album charts. In 2015, their album Outlaw In Me climbed to No. 3 on both the country and rap album charts. They received their first RIAA Gold certification from their 2010 single “Kickin’ Up Mud” and recently their second for “Dirt Road Dollars.”

In 2017, Sharpe and King made their own independent record label, Dirt Rock Empire, and released their first album with the label, Dirt Rock. It landed in the Top 25 of the Billboard Country Albums Chart. Since then, they have recently been putting the finishing touches on their upcoming album which is set to release in 2023.

PARKING:  Parking is available next door to Silverados in the grass lot in front of Grove Stone Baptist Church. Parking $10 (Cash preferred, purchase parking at the lot.) Operated by Bo Wallace - (336) 225-3582  

UBER/LYFT  is also a good choice.  

TAKE THE BUS:  Silverados is on the public bus route.  

FOOD AND DRINK:  Food trucks and full bar service available onsite. Outside food & beverage is not permitted.  

SEATING:  Festival Style General Admission - we have 400 folding chairs, first come first served. Feel free to bring your favorite camping chair to enjoy the show. (see details below)

Behind the video: the lacs discuss their down home “hellraisers in heaven” music video.

Discussing their music video for “Hellraisers in Heaven” with Murphy Elmore, The Lacs’ Clay Sharpe and Brian King chat about its origins, unique filming place, and what they love most about the clip.

The Lacs are blazing hot right now, thanks to the recent release of their latest single, “ Hellraisers in Heaven .” In the four weeks since the release of the song’s official music video, it has garnered over 300,000 views, which is no surprise considering how hard this track hits. A collaboration with Alabama singer-songwriter Murphy Elmore , “Hellraisers in Heaven” is a musing on good-natured, young rebellion and the hope that forgiveness will be granted when it comes our time to transition to the afterlife. Like many of The Lacs’ tracks, it features a nice mishmash of country and southern rock, along with some elements of southern hip-hop.

Speaking of hip-hop, it’s a distinctive type that singer Clay Sharpe and singer and guitarist Brian King have concocted. There are many classic-sounding southern guitar riffs mixed with booming beats and rhymes, primarily about what life is like growing up in the South. In the 10+ years that they have been together, the duo has racked up nearly 2 billion streams across various platforms. Not too shabby from two southern boys, just wanting to share their songs with whoever is interested.

To get a better sense of how the clip for “Hellraisers in Heaven” came together, we caught up with both Sharpe and King, who discussed the origins of the video, its unique filming place, what they love most about the video, and more.

Who directed the video?

The Lacs: “ Josh Kirk and our brother Crucifix directed and produced the video. Josh has shot several videos for us, and Cruce takes every video to the next level with his attention to detail and lighting. He should really be on big movie sets directing.”

What’s the concept behind the video? Help us to understand the video’s concept in more detail and how it ties into the lyrics.

“The concept was to depict a viewpoint where viewers could connect with our story and their past selves. We wanted them to see us looking back on our younger years, being your typical high school rebellious teenagers, and connect to that time in our lives. When you’re that young and experiencing life, you tend to be a little mischievous in a way that leaves you wondering and hoping God lets ‘Hellraisers in Heaven.’”

Where was the video made?

“The video was filmed in a small town in Tennessee called Cookeville. That’s where our brother Sonny Bama (the preacher in the video) lives. We used Sonny’s Impala in the video and a little church down the road from his house. We feel it worked out perfectly.”

What was your favourite part behind creating this clip?

“Our favourite part was seeing the younger fellas who portrayed us and how we grew up. Talking about the concept and our younger years is one thing, but seeing it depicted on screen was a full-circle moment. All the actors and extras did a great job.”

If you could get one guest to be in one of your videos, who would it be and why?

“ Vince Vaughn . He’s one of our favourite actors. We’ve never met him, but he seems like a guy we would click with and joke around with while having a few beers at the bar.”

What makes a music video “bad” or “good”? What makes it “great”?

“A real video is always going to be good, but every now and then, you can shoot one to make people feel what you are feeling through visuals, and that is what makes it great. Whether it’s happy, mad, depressed, or lost, any video that can make the viewers feel or say, ‘I know how he’s feeling; I’ve been there,’ in our minds, that is a video connecting, that’s a great video.”

What do you hate about music videos? What did you wish there was less of? What could the medium do away with?

“What we hate about music videos is the waiting. We like always being on the move and want to knock stuff out quickly. However, getting the right shots takes time and a lot of patience. I remember one album cover shoot took us two days to perfect everything for one photo. Video shoots can be the same way. The end products are always worth the patience, but if there were a way to get everything completed quicker without sacrificing the perfectionism that we want, that would be great.”

Any mishaps on set?

“There are mishaps on every music video set we have ever been a part of; not all are bad, though. Sometimes they turn out to be better than the original plan.”
