Guided Motorcycle tours of Australia
Odyssey Traveller offers fully guided motorcycle tours Australia as well as independent motorcycle holiday experiences across all of Australia. The collection of motorbike trip offered to the mature and senior traveller falls into three types;
The motorbike tour that runs in parallel with a escorted small group tour offered by Odyssey.
- Guided motorcycle tours with a tour leader and several other riders on a motorcycle ride who follow a small group tour program.
- The third option is a private tour using GPS and minimal support from Odyssey to enjoy a self guided tour.
Whether you are taking a guided motorbike tour or a self guided tour, this type of itinerary is for the mature and senior traveller who are experienced riders. For any small group motorcycle touring selected each rider will need to demonstrate competency on the bike selected whether your own or supplied by us. This will often include a half day training camp in Sydney about riding on sealed and unsealed roads when embarking on your motorcycle touring program. Odyssey’s motorcycle tours Australia are rider and safety focussed whether on a guided motorbike tour or self drive, because the Australian outback is a harsh and unforgiving environment to ride in with some of the world’s greatest scenery to enjoy whether traversing the Blue mountains, the Hunter valley as you leave or return to Sydney, depart Melbourne on the spirit of Tasmania for a guided motorbike tour of Tasmania or the Snowy mountains or go North with us to Cairns and Cape York we will support you from start to finish on your motorcycle ride of maybe a lifetime.

Enjoying a unique motorcycle tour
Odyssey Traveller has assembled a collection of unique motorcycle tours Australia for your riding experience inthe states of Australia. The type of motorcycle trip offered to EXPERIENCED riders is typically between 7 to 21 days whichever of the three different tour type suits you trip to Australia. Our knowledge and experience of the Australian outback allows us to offer to you some of the best locations to visit on a motorcycle tour as well as experiences from breathtaking scenery to learning and appreciating the Aboriginal timeline that runs back to possibly over 120,000 years of settlement and the two hundred years of British and European history. For Odyssey the best riding experience is far from the crowded highways. It is knowing how to share with you the stunning scenery of the diverse landscapes of the outback with stories.
Australia is a big empty continent to explore, once several hours from a major metro then a population of 50 people begins to seem like a major settlement when you arrive to re-fuel and take a break. This is simply riding through stunning scenery where the landforms start as dot on the horizon to become something substantial, where Emus may choose to race you alongside the road or a solitary tree with shade becomes the oasis under which to draw breath and reflect on the triptaken.
The days are long, simply because this is a big country! The riding experience is very different from that of the leading riding experience of Europe whether in Spain, Italy or France, or down to Morocco or riding in New Zealand. The Australian outback even on the unsealed roads is often straight for tens of kilometres at a time, the topography undulating and the gaps between settlements significant. Small group Guided motorbike tours with Odyssey will travel from 60 to a maximum of 650km. On a very rare occasion the tour may require you to ride for 850-900km in a day though this is the exception.
The traffic in regional and outback Australia is little and infrequent. However a 54 metre long road train on a sealed road is unique to the outback. Encountering the road train on a unsealed road in any direction is a riding experience not easily forgotten!
But the road train is ok, it is managing your ride to be off the road, some 30 minutes before dusk and starting the following about 30 minutes after sunrise in the outback to manage the risk of encountering wildlife on the roads. Safety in the outback whether enjoying one of our guided motorbike tours or a self guided motorcycle holiday is key to your enjoyment and we will provide good advice on how to enjoy this adventure from the provision of equipment from Air bag jackets to written comentary on outback safety to ensure you have a positive motorcycle rental experience.
How to plan a motorcycle tour
Odyssey Traveller will manage as your tour operator the majority of the planning logistics for guided motorcycle tours or self guided motorcycle tours in New South Wales , Queensland , the Northern Territory , South Australia , Western Australia or Tasmania and Victoria . Providing you with a bike tour that exceeds your expections from the accommodation, the bikerental and riding gear and local tour guide. You need to bring your helmut, gloves, boots and motorcycle license.
Contact with riders planning a motorcycle trip typically commences 6 to 18 months in advance. Initial enquiries to Odyssey Traveler are about what you think you would like to do and then we begin to share and the decision to take one of the three options. If you simply wish to enjoy winding roads then there are better motorcycle tour companies to contact.
Tour group options for motorcyclists
We have built up a collection of unique motorcylce tours with bikes for the mature and senior experienced rider to enjoy a rich tapestry in the itinerary to interesting places with a history and breathtaking scenery along the road less travelled to be enjoyed ending each day ingood accommodation, good food and drink to be enjoyed as you reflect on the day often with your tour guide.
Many of our rides are a mix of sealed and unsealed roads (paved and upaved roads), this experience is difficult to be avoided in the outback. The unpaved or unsealed road is to be enjoyed , considered as part of the total riding experience. Odyssey would assist the mature and experienced rider with a 1/2 day instruction on riding on unsealed road surfaces as part of its tour program as we leave Sydney for example. This is not off road riding instructions to enable you to “go bush” but instruction on being competent on different surfaces such as a range of gravels, sand and red dirt that make the regional road network in Outback Australia. As senior or mature riders we do not provide a support vehicle on our motorcycle tour programs, you are comptent riders on the open road and there is no need for a support vehicle. However, we will on private self gjuided tours provide satelitte based technology to ensure in the event of an emergency all parties can be contacted. And if your wish is to ride one way then we can accomodate these requests and others in the tour prices.
For the mature and experienced rider we offer three motorcycle rental options.The options are;
For the experienced rider this is independent tour where your partner is travelling with a guaranteed tour for up to 3 weeks and each day you ride independent of the coach either solo or with an associate to the destinations on the tour.
Guided motorcycle tours with a tour leader and several other riders who follow a small group tour program.
These Motorbike only tours travel the same program as the escorted small group tours though with their own luggage (We will provide a suggested packing list to assist you in managing space). These programs also start with a 1/2 day instruction on riding on unsealed roads of the outback. Typically there are upto 6 riders plus your tour leader.
Private tour using GPS and minimal support from Odyssey to enjoy a self guided tour.
This type of self guided tour is independent. Beyond your chosen bike we provide, outerwear, panniers, gps with tourprograms and information and safety equipment to allow you to enjoy your adventure into the outback. Before you can commence the motorcycle rental period for a private tour you would need to also attend a 1/2 day briefing on riding on unsealed roads in Outback Australia. On this type of motorcycle holiday Odyssey would have assisted with booking your accommodation, supplying the bike and equipment including panniers.
Prices of motorcycle tours
Whether booking a guided motorcycle tour or one of our self guided motorcycle tours there is pricing that reflects your be-spoke requirements beyond just the motorcycle rental.

Crossing Australia
The ultimate outback adventure ride. sydney to perth across the nullarbor. in one word… epic.
Days of outback roads from the east coast of Australia to Perth on the west coast make this the pinnacle of our outback tours. It might sound long and arduous, but you’ll soon find yourself in rhythm with nature and the road itself.
Starting in Sydney we head directly west over the Blue Mountains into the outback and onto the mining town of Broken Hill, where there’s plenty to see and do. Mad Max and Pricilla Queen of the Desert were both filmed out here. There’s the Royal Flying Doctors and School of the Air to visit, as well as Silverton, Mundi Mundi Plains, the Sculpture Park at sunset and the Living Desert. There are also mining exhibits, Aboriginal artworks, as well as many iconic pubs and interesting ‘locals’ you can have a ‘yarn’ with.
From there we travel further west to join the start of the Nullarbor Plains, at Port Augusta. Crossing the Nullarbor into Western Australia includes the 90 mile (145 kilometre) straight, the longest straight road in Australia. Look out for camels, emus, kangaroos and massive flocks of native parrots.
At the western side of the Nullarbor we turn south (left) to Esperance and Albany on the coast, voted one of the most desirable areas in Australia to live. Then it’s off to Margaret River, where some of Australia’s best wines are grown.
From there it’s just another day on the road and we make it to Perth and Fremantle and the Indian Ocean on the west coast. You will have then experienced what less than 2% of Aussies have ever experienced, even in a car. And you would have done it on a motorcycle.
A one-way bike return fee will apply. Though, if you enjoyed that ride so much, we can always turn around and ride back in another, very fast, 7 days.
View the route on google maps and get a taste of just how amazing this tour truly is.
This tour averages 375km a day on ride days.

You’ll meet the BikeRoundOz team and your new co-riders, then we’ll run through the tour briefing and answer any questions that you might have. A 10 minute walk will take us to Circular Quay and around to the ‘ Rocks ‘ district where we’ll have a celebratory first night dinner, complete with superb views overlooking the iconic Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. The views at night are simply spectacular and it makes for a great start to the tour.
NEW SOUTH WALES SOUTHERN COAST
There are more than 30 national parks scattered along the coastline of southern New South Wales, with incredible marine sanctuaries and nature reserves adding to the already pretty impressive count. The route follows the coast along the Grand Pacific Drive and over the famous Seacliff Bridge, a marvel of modern road building. It’s not possible to ride any closer to the ocean without actually getting wet.
SNOWY MOUNTAINS
Epic alpine scenery in Australia? You bet! Most people don’t realise that Australia has more ski runs than Switzerland, but a ride through this area will soon set the record straight. Although mostly recognised for its winter sports, ‘the Snowies’, as the area is affectionately known, is a playground for those looking for something different and adventurous motorcyclists alike.
Twist through the atmospheric alpine forests, sweep along the winding mountain roads and drink in the fantastic scenery. Whilst you’re having so much fun, don’t forget to stop for lunch at one of the seasonal alpine towns along the way, or pause for a rest on the shores of one of the many pristine snow fed lakes.

New South Wales has the Snowy Mountains and Victoria has the Highlands. A more relaxed alpine environment than the Snowies, but don’t be fooled, there are plenty of thrilling roads to ride and more breathtaking scenery to provide a great backdrop.
Wide open plains framed by rolling hills and jagged mountain peaks, the road stretching far into the distance meandering gently as it weaves through small settlements and tiny communities.
With such unrestricted views all around, there’s plenty of time to prepare for the corners, revel in the experience and then gaze about at the intricate beauty beyond the perfect ribbon of asphalt you’re speeding along.
A bustling, cosmopolitan city with loads to see and do. The ‘Cultural Capital of Australia’ will do its very best to make you feel welcome and it’s the ideal spot to take a break mid tour. Plenty of superb restaurants offering great meals, shopping, parks and an easy to use tram system make touring the city a breeze.
Not quite as much fun as riding a motorcycle along the Great Ocean Road, which is the next highlight on this tour, but at least a close second.
THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD
Famous as one of the most scenic coastal drives in the world, words can’t describe the wonderful scenery and amazing riding on this 280km stretch of road on the fringes of Melbourne, but we’ll try anyway.
As soon as your wheels hit asphalt, you’ll realise just how special the Great Ocean Road really is. The route twists and turns, hugging the picturesque cliffs as it winds a sinuous path along the coast. Curve after sweeping curve are seamlessly stitched together, almost purposely designed to give maximum enjoyment to any motorcycle riders that are lucky enough to be there.
There are plenty of small coastal towns to stop for a break and a coffee, serving up fantastic ocean lookouts along with the great refreshments. The lovely Otway Ranges provide a lush backdrop to the quaint towns when the road darts inland away from the coast. It takes longer than you might expect to ride along this gem of a road, there’s simply so much to see.
Take a walk in the temperate rainforest at Maits Rest, try and spot that iconic Aussie creature the Koala in the trees above, visit the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, the Grotto, London Bridge, The Arch the list goes on and on! Don’t forget to watch the road as well as the spectacular views though!
Every motorcyclist should ride this road at least once in their life!
THE GRAMPIANS NATIONAL PARK
The ancient hills of the Grampians National Park make for an awesome spectacle as you ride toward them. This area of granite highlands is jam packed with wildlife, superb lookouts and beautiful waterfalls. The visitor centre at Halls Gap can provide all the information you’ll need for getting the best out of your time there and will give you a great overview of the area, ensuring you get to see everything you want during your visit.
By the time you’ve ridden the roads in the park, taken a short walk to the two main lookouts and perhaps trekked to the base of one of the thundering waterfalls, you’ll need at least a half day to absorb what’s on offer, but will probably long to spend more time lost in the atmosphere of the national park.
SOUTH AUSTRALIAN COAST
Sticking to the coast as you wind your way towards Adelaide provides plenty of fascinating little coastal towns to explore. Some a little more quirky than others! There’s ‘Larry’ the giant lobster in Kingstown who’s definitely not your average specimen, the sleepy coastal towns of Robe and Beachport and the somewhat larger settlement of Mount Gambier.
Home to the magnificent Blue Pool, a lake inside a [hopefully] long extinct volcano which not only provides all the drinking water for the town, but also offers some fantastic scenery to explore as a way of stretching your legs out of the saddle.
Perched on the Fleurieu Peninsula, capital of Southern Australia, ‘City of Churches’ and the perfect blend of urban cool and natural splendour. Adelaide has one of the most impressive botanical gardens in the world, loads of relaxed open spaces and a vibrant atmosphere that makes it a pleasure to wander the streets.
A small town feel with lovely colonial architecture and all the conveniences of a modern city. It’ll be the biggest settlement that you’ll encounter from here until you reach Perth in Western Australia, so it’s the perfect spot to sample that most iconic of Aussie meals, the meat pie floater! That’s a meat pie floating in pea soup for those that haven’t had the pleasure as yet.
CLARE VALLEY
The Clare Valley is one of Australia’s premier grape growing regions and the wine making tradition runs deep in the area. The carefully tended gardens, regimented columns of vines, pristine conservation parks and plethora of open cellar doors makes this area an absolute delight to ride through. Try one of the famous Clare Valley Rieslings with a meal prepared at one of the many local restaurants or wineries.
FLINDERS RANGES
This is the start of what many would consider to be the ‘real outback’ and is the place you’ll really begin to get a feel for the otherworldly landscapes Australia has tucked away. Cavernous red gorges and magnificent mountains seemingly aglow in the sunset, contrast with the starkly beautiful white gum trees standing proud in the thin desert soil. Huge wedge tailed eagles soar in the blue skies above and the peace and solitude make you feel as if you’re on a different planet.
All this can be reached within a relatively short distance of the Wilpena Pound Resort. An oasis in the outback, fully kitted out with all the modern facilities. There are a huge amount of gravel tracks to explore, but if you don’t want to take your bike on the gravel then the 4WD tours are superb and really help to bring the place alive. You’ll have day here to explore and immerse yourself at your leisure.
EYRE PENINSULA
Calm beaches and the warming waters of the Spencer Gulf on one side, jagged cliffs, turquoise blue waters and big skies on the other, the Eyre Peninsula is framed by spectacular sights. With more than 2000km of coastline to explore, we certainly hope you like beaches! It’s also the jumping off point from where you’ll begin your ride along the Eyre Highway heading west, across the world renowned Nullarbor Plain.
NULLARBOR PLAIN
Epic, truly epic. That’s the only way we can think of describing the Nullarbor Plain and the Eyre Highway which stretches across the vastness. The Nullarbor is the largest single piece of limestone in the world, over 200,000 square kilometres of it in fact and crossing it is arguably the quintessential Australian Outback experience.
This seemingly endless plain [‘nullus arbor’ meaning ‘no tree’ in Latin] is a truly incredible thing to ride over. Not only is it physically impressive and the sort of landscape where adventures are made, but the friendly characters you’ll meet along the way, typical Aussie roadhouse pubs and eye-wateringly beautiful sunsets over the desert truly make this a once in a lifetime experience.
The Great Australian Bight runs parallel to the highway for much of the crossing, there’s even whale watching at Head of Bight from June to October.
It’s as much about the people you’ll meet on this journey, as the scenery you’ll be riding through. A quick smile and a “hi!” will have you chatting away and making new friends before you know it.
After crossing the Nullarbor, you’ve certainly earned yourself a reward and Esperance is the ideal spot to indulge. There are some truly incredible beaches around the local area, so there are plenty of opportunities to lie back in the warming sands, dip your toes in the ocean and reflect on the ride so far.
Enjoy the local hospitality and recharge your batteries with some great local cuisine. You’ll have a day available to explore around the town, ride the famous coastal drive and fit in a bit more relaxing!
Founded in 1827 and the oldest permanently settled town in Western Australia, Albany has an old world charm that’s hard to beat and is surrounded by some of the most amazing beaches and coastal national parks in Australia.
You’ll have a day to explore, giving you plenty of time to visit the Blowholes, Nature’s Arch and The Gap. The beaches here have been repeatedly voted the best in Australia and the sand is so pure it squeaks when you walk on it. It’s not all smooth beaches though, some pretty rugged areas of coastline provide the perfect setting for the Albany Wind Farm and a walk around the base of the huge towers offers some great views out over the ocean.
MARGARET RIVER
Immense Karri forests, world leading vineyards, stunning pure white beaches, an amazing coastline, hundreds of mysterious caves and some of the finest cuisine known to man; a carefully kept Australian secret. This is one of the finest areas of Australia and yet one of the least well known outside of Western Australia.
The climate and humidity in the region is ideal for growing grapes, which has led to the prevalence of world class wines heralding from the area. There are more cellar doors to knock on around Margaret River than you could shake a wine glass at!
There are some great tree lined roads and avenues to be ridden too and the cool, moist interiors of the subterranean caverns located along the aptly titled ‘Caves Road’ provide a welcome retreat from the midday temperatures. You’ll be able to spend a full day in Margaret River and its surrounds, soaking up the atmosphere, seeing the sights and enjoying the local produce, before continuing on to the state capital.
Nestled securely in Geographe Bay, Busselton has been a popular holiday spot for West Australians since the 1890s and it’s easy to see why. Beautiful beaches, excellent fishing, cool and enticing caves nearby, a relaxed ‘seaside’ atmosphere and of course the famous jetty which extends two kilometres out into the ocean. The nearby town of Bunbury to the north offers an excellent diversion en-route to Busselton, providing the opportunity to swim with dolphins. A great chance to get up close and personal with most inexplicably happy mammals on the planet!
You can take the train along the jetty in Busselton or if you feel like stretching your legs after a day in the saddle, then the walk is well worth the effort.
Perth is a modern, clean city on the banks of the majestic Swan River. The river feels more like a winding harbour really with Fremantle (‘Freo’ to the locals) at its entrance. Perth has all you’d expect from a thriving city with great shopping, restaurants and nightlife combined with superb beaches and a sublime climate.
The weather is perfect for most of the year with warm winters and hot summers, cooled by the ‘Fremantle doctor’ sea breeze that comes through most afternoons.
Ranked as one of the ‘world’s most liveable cities’, Perth has charm aplenty even if you’re just visiting. A fantastic end point to this incredible, long distance motorbike tour of Australia.
NOTE: This tour involves crossing the Nullarbor Plain, which will mean two days of 650-700km of riding. It’s to be expected considering you’ll be riding over the world’s largest exposure of limestone bedrock and it’s all part of the great experience of traversing the continent on two wheels.
