Paul Wesley as Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.

Star Trek has always had a habit of taking unlikely detours into other genres, whether it was Kirk and Spock dressing like gangsters in the TOS episode “A Piece of the Action” or the powerful Deep Spine Nine period piece “Far Beyond the Stars.” But with its most recent episode, Strange New Worlds takes the franchise in the most unexpected direction.

Directed by Dermott Downs, “ Subspace Rhapsody ” finds the Enterprise crew breaking into song after discovering an anomaly at the edge of the Alpha Quadrant. The episode gives Uhura actor Celia Rose Gooding a chance to show off the pipes that landed them a role in Jagged Little Pill: The Musical on Broadway , and also featured a Klingon hip-hop number that recalls Han Solo’s lowest moment .

As shocking as the episode was for Trekkies, “Subspace Rhapsody” benefited from a steady hand at the helm, thanks to Downs’ previous experience working with musicals. The mind behind the “ Duet ” episode of The Flash , which saw Supergirl and Flash forced to sing to battle the Music Meister, Downs knows how to make normally straight-laced heroes burst into song.

Ad – content continues below

Although he knew the risks of such a stylistic divergence for Strange New Worlds , Downs told Comicbook.com that he drew from familiar influences. For Pike’s argument with Captain Batel, Downs designed “kind of [a] country duet that goes sideways in front of the whole crew.” The Klingon hip-hop moment came about after shooting a version without dancing but Downs decided that it didn’t work. “You want it to be something outrageous,” he explained, arguing that only an act that filled Klingons with dishonor would “help us propel to this final conquering of the anomaly.”

The most complex of the numbers involved Nurse Chapel’s excitement over a career opportunity, even at the cost of her relationship with Spock, which overtakes her in a crowded mess hall. “There were so many elements and interactive elements to that, that that probably had the most full-blown rehearsals, just so everybody would be prepared on the day and you’re not trusting someone’s going to catch you, and on the day they don’t,” said Downs.

But the most interesting of the numbers featured La’an ‘s heartbreak at seeing Kirk , who does not know about the romance the two shared in an alternate reality. After watching Kirk and Una perform a playful duet, La’an retreats to her room for an intimate song, one that includes insert shots of the life she and Kirk could have had. “I know it probably has a music video feel, but I was going for something much more like Terrence Malick and emotional,” contended Downs, referencing the vulnerability in movies such as Tree of Life and Days of Heaven .

Initially, however, Downs planned to take a bigger approach. “Originally, that breakout moment, we were talking about doing something like  The Sound of Music ,” he revealed. “[B]ut it just became too huge and out of step with the episode and it would’ve been fun to go completely opposite of outer space.”

Of course, “Subspace Rhapsody” ends up delivering much more than a worthwhile musical. It pushes the story forward for several characters, while revealing some interesting backstory for Kirk by bringing back Carol Marcus , who you might know best from The Wrath of Khan . It’s an impressive amount of ground to cover for the Star Trek series, especially when doing it in song and dance!

Lakeshore Records is set to release Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1—Original Series Soundtrack digitally on April 28 with original music by award-winning composer Nami Melumad –she recently won the David Raskin Award for Emerging Talent at this year’s SCL Awards for this score. Emmy Award-winning and Grammy-nominated composer Jeff Russo, known for his definitive scores to several Star Trek series in including Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery, created the main title and end credits themes.   Notes Melumad: “Creating the ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ score has been one of the biggest honors of my life. A captain is nothing without her crew and I’d like to thank the artists, musicians, and friends that made this Season 1 score album possible: Matt Decker, Jeff Kryka, Tracie Turnbull, Natalia Goldstein, Dennis Sands, Brian Vibberts, Vincent Cirlli, Jamie Olivera, Tom Hardisty, Rich Wheeler, Whitney Martin, Gina Zimmeti, Nick Cazares, Lisa Janacu, Booker White and our wonderful orchestra musicians. Also, many thanks to Alex Kurtzman and the Secret Hideout, Paramount+ and Lakeshore records! • "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is breaking new ground by venturing into the realm of musical theater with its first-ever musical episode.
  • The episode features original music by Kay Hanley and Tom Polce, and a new interpretation of the main theme by composer Jeff Russo.
  • Jeff Russo's a cappella theme arrangement honors the series' iconic theme while building anticipation for the original songs by Hanley and Polce.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is going where the franchise has never gone before: into the realm of musical theater. The episode, titled “Subspace Rhapsody” is the first time any Star Trek show has gone musical , and sees the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showcasing the range of their talents by performing the show’s musical numbers themselves. In addition to being something of a groundbreaking step for Star Trek as a whole, the musical episode continues to prove the value of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ’ genre-bending approach.

In addition to featuring original music by Kay Hanley ( Letters to Cleo ) and Tom Polce ( Letters to Cleo, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ), this special episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds boasts a new main theme interpretation by composer Jeff Russo. Russo is also known for his work on Fargo , For All Mankind, and Star Trek: Picard and won an Emmy Award in 2017 for his work on Fargo season 3, episode 9 “Aporia”. Screen Rant is excited to premiere Russo’s take on the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds theme in advance of the soundtrack release. Check it out:

Listen to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2—Subspace Rhapsody (Original Series Soundtrack) on August 4th

Jeff Russo’s a cappella theme arrangement perfectly sets the stage for the first-ever musical Star Trek episode while still honoring the series’ unmistakable theme. It also builds excitement for the original songs written by Kay Hanley and Tom Polce, the latter of whom was behind some of the funniest songs from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend . Here's what Russo had to say about his work on the theme:

Jeff Russo: When Henry mentioned the “musical” episode I immediately blurted out “a-cappella main title?” In the end it's a blend of voices and orchestra, but it was so incredible to make.

Guitarist Jeff Russo is an award-winning film and TV composer, also known for his work as a founding member of the band Tonic. Russo emerged to chart success, nabbing a mainstream rock hit with "If You Could Only See" off Tonic's 1996 debut, Lemon Parade. The group also picked up two Grammy nominations for 2002's Head on Straight. Russo expanded into soundtrack work, scoring film and television productions, including winning an Emmy for his work on FX's acclaimed drama Fargo. He has supplied the music to shows like Star Trek: Discovery, The Umbrella Academy, and Legion. He also scored director Noah Hawley's 2019 film Lucy in the Sky and the 2021 drama Oslo.

Born in 1969, Russo started playing guitar in his teens, inspired by his love of bands like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin. In 1990, he formed the alt-rock outfit Tonic with his childhood friend singer/guitarist Emerson Hart. They broke through with 1996's Lemon Parade, which went platinum, buoyed by the hits "If You Could Only See" and "Open Up Your Eyes." Sugar followed in 1999, spawning the hit "You Wanted More," which was also included on the American Pie soundtrack. With 2002's Head on Straight, Tonic received two Grammy nominations. The group's fifth album, the eponymously titled Tonic, arrived in 2010.

While continuing his work in Tonic, Russo began branching out, writing music for commercials and producing. In 2014, he gained wider recognition winning an Emmy for his score to FX's Golden Globe-winning series Fargo. He has remained a sought-after composer, scoring Starz's Counterpart, starring J.K. Simmons, Neftlix's sci-fi series Altered Carbon, and HBO's Golden Globe- and Emmy-nominated series The Night Of, starring John Turturro and Riz Ahmed. He also picked up a BAFTA nomination for Best Music for Annapurna Interactive's video game What Remains of Edith Finch.

In 2017, Russo scored the Marvel-based FX show Legion. In addition, he supplies the music for the Peabody Award-nominated Star Trek: Discovery and Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, based on the Gerard Way comic book series. Russo has also scored for film, including Mark Wahlberg's 2018 action-thriller Mile 22 and the 2018 Lizzie Borden biographical thriller Lizzie, starring Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart. In 2019, he scored director Noah Hawley's film Lucy in the Sky, starring Natalie Portman. Russo also supplied the soundtrack to the 2021 TV movie Oslo, based on the negotiations surrounding the 1993 Oslo Accords. ~ Matt Collar

Exotic Themes for the Silver Screen – Volume 1

Composer Michael Giacchino is releasing an album of Exotica-style covers of his scores for “Lost,” “Speed Racer,” the 2009 film “ Star Trek ,” Pixar’s “Up,” “Ratatouille” and “The Incredibles” and more.

Gaming layoffs already top 2023’s total — and it’s only july, tim heidecker announces new music album 'slipping away' (exclusive), popular on variety.

“These newly recorded themes transport you to a far-off sunset, looking out at the ocean, complete with a cocktail in hand, providing a much-needed escape from the stress of modern times,” Hickman said.

“Exotic Themes for the Silver Screen – Volume 1” includes music from his early video game scores to his television hits and blockbuster films, transformed from their original arrangements via instruments like vibraphones and marimbas, the musical lexicon of the Exotica genre.

“This album was inspired by the work of Lyman and Denny,” Giacchino said. “What would they do with the ‘Star Trek’ theme? Or video games like ‘Medal of Honor’? It was a way for me to play in that world I loved so much growing up. I thought it would be fun to create a fantasy world, where this album was recorded back in 1967 and then lost, only to resurface today.”

“So much was rooted in the big orchestral sound, so it was really about scaling it back,” Giacchino explained. “The real trick is figuring out the little fun hooks and things you can add along the way. There were no rules; I was up for anything. It was a way to re-engage with the material and be creative in a new way.”

The first two singles from “Exotic Themes,” “LAX” from Lost and “Married Life” from Up, are available on Spotify now. The rest of the tracks will be released on streaming platforms July 26, to be followed in physical formats from Mutant featuring cover artwork by Luke Insect and liner notes from film score expert Charlie Brigden.

Michael Giacchino Remixed His Music With Beach Vibes and It’s Pure Magic

Germain Lussier

Composer Michael Giacchino already has one of the most impressive resumes in recent history, but with his latest release, he may have just topped it all. Though Giacchino first became known for his work on Lost , he’s also composed scores for Spider-Man, Thor, The Batman, The Incredibles, Star Trek, Star Wars, Mission Impossibl e, and many, many more . All of which are fantastic, but movie music has a very specific vibe . Now, Giacchino has taken many of those scores and made them perfect for summer lounging. And it’s incredible.

The project is called Exotic Themes for the Silver Screen – Volume 1  and it’s now available for preorder on both LP and CD from Mutant. Truly though, to understand what’s happening here, it’s better to let the music do the talking. Here’s one of Giacchino’s most famous tracks, “Enterprising Young Men” from J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek , done in the Exotic Themes style.

Isn’t that, quite possibly, the coolest thing you’ve ever heard? Don’t you just want to sit by the pool or on the beach, have a drink with an umbrella coming out of it, and listen to this on repeat? That was the point.

“This album was inspired by the work of Arthur Lyman and Martin Denny,” Giacchino said in a press release. “What would they do with the Star Trek  theme? Or video games like  Medal of Honor ? It was a way for me to play in that world I loved so much growing up. I thought it would be fun to create a fantasy world, where this album was recorded back in 1967 and then lost, only to resurface today.”

And that’s just one of the many, many tracks. Here’s the album cover followed by full tracklisting.

William Shatner reveals he would do Star Trek reboot - but only for a 'great deal of money'

William Shatner Gene Roddenberry

William Shatner would do a 'Star Trek' reboot for a "great deal of money" but admits he has never really ever watched the show that made him famous.

The 93-year-old actor- who looks back on his life and career in the new documentary 'You Can Call Me Bill' - is best known for originating the role of Captain James T. Kirk in the cult sci-fi franchise almost six decades ago but admitted while reminiscing on how he got the part in the first place that he would do it all over again if the price was right.

He told 'Entertainment Tonight': "I don't remember ever auditioning for anything. I went to New York in a play, and it got great notices, and agents came after me.

"I got a call from this guy [Gene] Roddenberry who wanted me to play the captain of the space.

"I loved Leonard [who played Spock], he was a brother to me. Leonard Nimoy. So, I had a great deal of affection for him. I loved some of the acting moments that they put the character into. Yes, I could be tempted to [do it again] for a great deal of money.

"I'm so busy now. You don't understand how busy I am. I've got a documentary."

But the classic television star has never even really watched the show that made him famous, and doesn't spent much time watching the small screen in the first place.

He said: "I’m gonna tell you something that nobody knows.

"I've never seen another 'Star Trek' and I’ve seen as few 'Star Treks' of the show I was on, I’ve seen as few as possible. I don't like to look at myself, and I’ve never seen any other. I love it, I think it's great, I just don’t, you know, I don’t watch television per se.

"I'm watching documentaries, I’m watching the news, I'm watching sports, I’m watching things that were, documentaries that were made but I don't watch television for some reason. I've been urged to watch certain shows by my family, 'You'll love this,' and I just never get around to it."

A Huge Hollywood Upheaval Could Turn Star Trek Into the Next MCU

A merger might restructure the Final Frontier.

The USS Enterprise as seen in the 2016 film 'Star Trek Beyond.'

Star Trek is one of the biggest and oldest sci-fi franchise stalwarts. By the time George Lucas brought Star Wars back in 1999 with The Phantom Menace , Star Trek was already nine movies deep, on what felt like its third reboot, and was in the middle of its fourth major TV series. Since then, the TV side of Trek has continued to diversify and grow into the 21st century, while Trek’s film output has been much smaller than it was back in the day.

Now, however, Star Trek might suddenly experience its biggest growth period yet. Thanks to a game-changing merger, it’s conceivable that a newly reborn version of the Star Trek franchise may resemble the MCU in a few years, in that its film and TV canon could become more integrated than ever before.

Skydance buys Paramount

Paramount's Rob Moore, Chris Pine and executive producer David Ellison arrive at the LA premiere of ...

Rob Moore, Chris Pine, and producer David Ellison of Skydance at the 2013 premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness.

According to Deadline , Paramount Global — the parent company that contains Paramount brands, including CBS, Paramount Pictures, and Nickelodeon — will soon be owned by Skydance Studios. This merger has been in progress for a while, as Paramount has essentially been looking for a buyer since 2023. Skydance, owned by David Ellison, has previously produced existing Paramount franchise movies, including several Mission: Impossible movies and two Star Trek films, Into Darkness (2013) and Beyond (2016).

This $8 billion dollar investment will put the ownership of major franchises like Spongebob and Mission: Impossible under the Skydance/Paramount umbrella, but the Star Trek franchise will probably be the most immediately impacted, as it already has at least two movies in pre-production and two live-action TV series filming or in post-production.

Will Star Trek level up?

Bones (Karl Urban), Kirk (Chris Pine), and Spock (Zachary Quinto) look to the future in 'Star Trek B...

Bones, Kirk, and Spock were looking to the future in 2016’s Star Trek Beyond . Could they return?

While the merger’s immediate impact on Star Trek is unknown, we can take some educated guesses. Ever since J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek rebooted the movies with a new continuity, the development and stories of Trek’s movie and TV projects have remained siloed. While filmmaker Alex Kurtzman oversees all current Trek shows, and co-wrote the first two Abrams films, he has no current input on the movie side.

However, the next Trek film is thought to be a new “origin story,” which could bridge various timelines and possibly reboot the franchise all over again. At the same time, a long-waited Star Trek 4 starring Chris Pine and the reboot crew has been trapped in development hell since 2016. Recently, Pine speculated about how a hypothetical script would address the time gap between films. “I’m a lot older now,” he told Popverse . “So I would be curious where that next story lands us...”

Now that the development of CBS’ Trek TV shows and Paramount’s Trek films will effectively all be under Skydance, Star Trek films and TV shows might not be so distant from each other, and Star Trek 4 could enter development with some connections to existing shows. The dream scenario could be akin to Star Trek’s mid-’90s heyday, when TV series like Deep Space Nine and Voyager crossed over with Next Generation’s feature films, mostly notably with First Contact in 1996. This multi-pronged world-building was almost unheard of at the time, and was an inspiration for Kevin Feige’s construction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe .

With Skydance CEO David Ellison now overseeing all of Star Trek, the franchise may regain a unified approach. As of last year, there was little reason to believe that Patrick Stewart’s hope for another Next Generation movie would actually happen. But now, suddenly, a big-screen sequel to Picard Season 3 or some kind of crossover movie between Strange New Worlds and the Abrams’ timeline crew feels way more plausible. In fact, according to TrekMovie , Ellison made it clear that this kind of franchise building was in the works: “Today Ellison also talked about unifying franchises across TV, film and interactive media, which could potentially lead to a more comprehensive Star Trek Universe.”

Star Trek’s Streaming Future

The Enterprise crew in the 'Strange New Worlds' Season 2 finale,

Could the Strange New Worlds crew make its way to the big screen?

One major question about the merger is whether Paramount+ will continue to operate as usual. As Anthony Pascale of TrekMovie pointed out in January 2024 , there’s a possibility the streaming service could sell off its shows to other streamers. “If Paramount+ were shut down, the original Star Trek shows could be licensed to other streamers, as Paramount Global has already done with Prodigy , now streaming on Netflix,” Pascale wrote. “The legacy Trek shows would likely also be licensed. This move back to licensing is already happening throughout the industry.”

While having the vast majority of Trek in one home at Paramount+ is great for fans, putting both old and new Trek on Netflix could allow the franchise to expand its viewership. Strange New Worlds, for example, is beloved by Trekkies, but if Season 3 debuted on Netflix instead of Paramount+, it could evolve from a niche show into a massive hit. That said, at this time it sounds like Paramount is planning to rebuild Paramount+ while looking for licensing deals to maximize profits.

Again, this is all speculation; Skydance hasn’t announced any plans for the future of the Trek franchise. But now that the Paramount starship is refueling and re-branding, fans should expect Star Trek to begin boldly going in new directions very, very soon.

'Star Trek' legend Jonathan Frakes to direct new series, 'Arthur C. Clarke's Venus Prime'

F ilmmaker, author, producer and actor Jonathan Frakes is best known for his portrayal of Commander Will Riker in "Star Trek: The Next Generation," a role he has also played in four "Star Trek" feature films with the acclaimed "TNG" cast.

Outside of his co-starring roles in the final frontier, Riker is also an accomplished director, beginning with his dip into filmmaking on "The Next Generation" and continuing with his helming of 1996's "Star Trek: First Contact" and 1998's " Star Trek: Insurrection ." Along the way, he has transitioned back to episodic series, directing several episodes of "Star Trek: Voyager," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," and behind-the-camera gigs in the modern streaming realm for Paramount+'s "Star Trek: Discovery," " Star Trek: Picard ," and " Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ."

Now that filming has been completed in Toronto on the third season of "Strange New Worlds," Frakes has turned his talents to an ambitious new project — an epic TV series adaptation of the classic Paul Preuss novels, "Arthur C. Clarke's Venus Prime." Screenwriters David Cormican ("Tokyo Trial") and Dwayne Hill ("Northern Rescue") will serve as executive producers and showrunners.

"When the materials for 'Arthur C. Clarke’s Venus Prime' were presented to me, I couldn’t help but devour them," Frakes told Variety . "When asked if I wanted to direct what I read —my answer was a resounding and immediate 'Hell, yes!' Working on such a tremendous piece of IP from the mind of another sci-fi legend (who is also a contemporary of the true #1 Gene Roddenberry ), will be both an honor and a dream for me."

"Venus Prime" is a series of six sci-fi mystery novels by author Paul Preuss, based upon a number of short stories from the legendary Arthur C. Clarke . They center around a young woman with superhuman skills named Sparta and her quest for the reality of her origins while confronting a sinister cult called the Free Spirit. Each book uses one Clarke story as its source material.

"Arthur C. Clarke's Venus Prime" will be listed as a Navajo Entertainment production in collaboration with Claxson, Washington Square Entertainment, Palatin Media, Julijette, Karma Film, Fun Republic Pictures and virtual production studio and film financier Volume Global.

"Bringing 'Arthur C. Clarke's Venus Prime' to audiences is a huge privilege and responsibility," said co-executive producer Lucas Vivo Garcia Lagos . "These books, along with the incredible characters and storylines, have been with me since my adolescence; I have always believed this IP has all the necessary elements to become a major blockbuster. By uniting the collective talents of Preuss, Cormican and Hill with Jonathan Frakes at the helm, we are confident we have assembled the perfect team to realize the cinematic vision we all share for this iconic property."

Jonathan Frakes speaks onstage during the Hallmark Channel Original Movies Clips & Conversations 2024 at Saban Media Center on June 03, 2024 in North Hollywood, California.
