la tour movie

Residents of a nondescript high-rise wake up one day to find their building covered by a void that annihilates anything that comes in contact with it. Convinced right away that this “black veil” is here to stay, the hundred-odd occupants go into survival mode, forming racial gangs, hoarding resources and putting up barricades. Nobler values yield to primitive instincts and the foundations of civilisation begin to crack.

French filmmaker Guillaume Nicloux’s nihilistic dystopian drama La tour proceeds with the inexorability of a boulder rolling down a hill. Taking the premise at face value, Nicloux sidesteps logical explanations, presenting the veil as an abstract entity that simply exists. This purity of outline allows the film to accommodate several allegorical interpretations: religious, social and existential. Even so, La tour is a blunt, brutal confrontation with France’s contemporary race relations, with the Black-Blanc-Beur utopianism of yore making way for a bleaker, more desperate vision.

Shot entirely indoors in artificial light, this quintessential product of the pandemic era envisages a world in which the public realm is a source of constant dread. Yet the exterminating angel in this unforgiving tower in lockdown isn’t the world, but humankind itself.

A poetic documentary tribute to the famous Eiffel tower, built for the 1889 World Fair and intended to have been destroyed 20 years later. A vocal subset of Parisians (among which, one may surmise, Clair would've been counted) insisted the Tower remain above the River Seine, a continued display of French engineering excellence. Clair makes strategic use of double exposures and dissolves, capturing the mechanical exuberance of the Tower; The great swooping steel latticework edifice a bounding symbol of the modern age.

IFFR 2023 review: La tour (Guillaume Nicloux)

la tour movie

“For a bit of bleak fun with a socio-political and existential slant you could do worse than this exquisitely shot dystopian piece of misanthropy.”

la tour movie

“ What does it feel like to die? ” A bit of a dour question on its own, but out of the mouth of a child this line becomes downright bleak. But Guillaume Nicloux’ latest film La tour isn’t very upbeat anyway. A film about the human disconnect under dire circumstances that lacks a connection to the humans it depicts, La tour is a bit of a head-scratcher. As a reflection on mankind’s ability to shed its humanity and sink deep in order to self-preserve, the film is original and appropriately dark. But without building a bond with any of the characters, their demise is unaffecting, leaving La tour a film to ‘enjoy’ (for lack of a better word) for the depths it plunges its characters in, but one that you shrug off easily once the credits roll.

La tour ‘s premise is certainly original, although hints of Alex Garland’s Annihilation shine through. One morning the residents of a high-rise find that their building is enveloped in a pitch black void. It only takes one brave soul to realize that the void is dangerous: it destroys everything and everyone that goes in. Contact with the outside world is impossible, so the residents are left to fend for themselves. For those of us with a pessimistic view of humanity, this all predictably goes south quickly. Gangs are formed, resources are hoarded, and the micro-society inside the building devolves rapidly into a barbarian state. There are three time jumps (five months, two years, five years) that illustrate the decline, while detaching the audience from any of the characters, the inhabitants sinking deeper with every jump. Voodoo-like religions are formed, sexual favours are traded for food, and one group starts breeding to supply themselves with meat (luckily we don’t actually get to see that). Elsewhere children are born and raised, but any spark of hope is snuffed out in a dark ending that offers a glimpse of humanity on the part of the only character that stands out before the film appropriately cuts to black.

With our own recent history of involuntary lockdowns and staying inside for prolonged times, it is not hard to relate to the people in the titular tower, but Nicloux gives us spare characterizations and not much of a narrative, so any feeling for them quickly goes out the window and into the void. Lack of a focal character (Angèle Mac’s coming the closest) drains La tour of any possible involvement by the audience, whose empathy is probably more based in the shared experience of the past few years than in anything shown on screen.

Which isn’t to say that La tour is not enjoyable on a certain dark level. The actions of the various groups within the building are certainly over-the-top, but rooted in a misanthropic point of view that unfortunately lies closer to the truth than we would like to admit if the pandemic era is anything to go by. La tour ‘s dystopia is real enough to be a believable reflection of how people would act (read: selfish) even when realizing that in the end everybody is going to die. Leave it to humans to make that a struggle to ensure who will die last. The film is morbid to a fault, but within its morbidity is the sinister pleasure of watching people reach the lowest levels in the name of self-preservation. If Nicloux had infused the film with a little more human drama La tour would have greater impact, and one doesn’t need a keen eye to read its view on French race relations, loudly broadcast. But for a bit of bleak fun with a socio-political and existential slant you could do worse than this exquisitely shot (a grainy black and white courtesy of cinematographer Christophe Offenstein) dystopian piece of misanthropy.

Hollywood Studio Tours

Which are the best.

la tour movie

This post covers the most enjoyable movie studio tours in and around Hollywood.

With so many historic studios in the area, it might be difficult to pick just one to visit.

Taking a studio tour is one of the top things to do in LA .

STUDIO TOURS

Interestingly enough, there are quite a few differences between the tours offered at each studio, and that should make it easier to figure out which tour best fits your expectations.

Ticket prices vary from $62 per person to literally thousands of dollars.

However, 3 of the tours, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, and Universal Studios are included for free or at a lower cost in several tourist attraction passes.

It's also worth noting that the length of these tours can run from roughly an hour to almost a week.

With all of that said, let's start talking about what each movie studio offers with their tours.

  • Warner Bros.
  • Sony Pictures
  • Universal Studios
  • Paramount Pictures
  • Adventures by Disney: Disney Backstage

At the bottom of this post , we share some thoughts and opinions from members of our Los Angeles Travel Tips group on Facebook.

Our group comprises roughly 9,000 locals (like our tour guides), tourists, returning visitors, and newbies to LA.

You don't need to be a member to read the posts, comments, and recommendations.

WARNER BROS. STUDIO TOUR

Below is a summary of our post on Warner Brothers Studio tours , where we also provide tips on planning your trip.

If you're in the market for a somewhat normal tour on the backlot, this might be one of your best bets.

In addition to seeing movie sets and sound stages from some of the most notable movies in film history, you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy a few specific activities.

la tour movie

While on this movie studio tour, you'll be able to re-create a famous scene from the hit television show Friends , climb aboard Harry Potter 's broomstick, and even create your own Batmobile.

Warner Bros. even offers an interactive sound stage that explores the entire process of making a film from start to finish.

At three hours in length, this tour is probably the longest duration of all of the options in Hollywood.

  • $70/adult | $60/child
  • Availability: Thursday - Monday
  • Hours: Every half hour from 9 am - 3:30 pm
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Available in both English and Spanish
  • Click here for more information .

TIP: This tour is included for free with the purchase of the Go City Los Angeles Explorer Tourist Pass .

You can also combine this tour with the Universal Studios tour using the combo deal below!

la tour movie

With an overall score of 4.5 out of 5 stars , it's fair to say that this Hollywood studio tour is very well rated ( read reviews here ).

Some guests have gone so far as to suggest that this trip is worth every single penny.

Visitors were typically very happy with their tour guides, referring to them as both friendly and informative.

SONY PICTURES STUDIO TOUR

This might be the most affordable movie studio tour in Hollywood, and it's also one of the most historic. Do note, that is is a walking tour.

While on this tour, you'll see the sound stages where they recorded classics such as The Wizard of Oz and superhero flicks like Spider-man .

Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to see where Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are recorded.

Although they don't make any promises, there's always a chance that you'll run into someone famous on this active studio back lot!

They also offer a premium tour which includes transportation via golf cart, access to the Sony Museum, a free souvenir photo, a complimentary beverage, and lower prices at the Sony Studio Store.

Tickets

  • $55 per person | $150 for the Premium tour
  • Availability: Monday – Friday at 10:30 am, 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm
  • Duration: 2 hours

Tip: Admission is usually included for free with the purchase of at least one Los Angeles tourist pass .

With an overall score of 4 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor, it's clear that this is a pretty popular Hollywood studio tour.

Customers really appreciated the opportunity to see several historic filming locations and learn a lot about the process of making a movie.

Although some reviewers were unhappy that this is a walking tour, others simply appreciated the opportunity to see where film history was made.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS TOUR

This is where things get interesting, as Universal Studios has essentially made their tour one of the services offered at their amusement park.

In other words, you need to buy a ticket for Universal Studios Hollywood in order to experience this studio tour.

Clocking in at only one hour in length, this is definitely the shortest studio tour available. Check out this video of Stephen Spielberg giving a tour of the site.

In addition to seeing the back lot, you'll also experience attractions such as the Jaws ride, King Kong 360 in 3D, Bates Motel and Fast & The Furious : Supercharged.

Although it will cost more to take this tour, it's worth noting that your ticket lasts all day and guarantees access to all of the rides.

  • $119-$139/adult | $109-$129/child
  • Availability: Daily from 8 am - 6 pm
  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Click here for ticket information .

TIP:   Universal Studios Hollywood is included for free with the purchase of a tourist pass. Read about all the opportunities for deals in our full post .

Despite the higher price tag, this movie studio tour has still received quite excellent ratings ( read reviews here ). The overall Universal Studios Hollywood experience has a score of 4.7 out of 5 stars .

A few visitors have even suggested that this trip around the studio is worth the price of admission.

Although most customers feel that the ticket price is a bit high, even the critics can't deny that they had a blast.

PARAMOUNT PICTURES STUDIO TOUR

Unlike the other movie studios, Paramount Pictures offers three different studio tours.

The main tour is 2 hours long and covers quite a lot of ground on the backlot.

However, if you want to experience more, their VIP tour lasts for 4 ½ hours and includes access to several additional areas.

The VIP tour also provides a gourmet lunch at a unique location in the studio.

Alternatively, you can also choose a 2 ½ hour night tour that reveals a lot of historic locations such as notable theaters and original film vaults.

No matter which option you choose, you'll learn a lot about the history of Paramount.

  • $65 for the studio tour | $215 for the VIP tour
  • Availability of Studio tour: Mon-Fri, every half hour from 9 AM - 3:30 PM
  • Availability of VIP tour: Mon, Wed, Fri at 9:30 AM
  • Duration of Studio tour: 2 hours
  • Duration of VIP tour: 4 ½ hours
  • Click here for additional information .

Reviews for the Paramount Pictures Studio tours are very positive, averaging a rating of 4 ½ out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor.

Some visitors referred to the excursion as a movie buff's dream, while others were just impressed with how much they learned and discovered.

Some reviewers indicated that Paramount alters the tour slightly depending on the season, ensuring a nice variety of topics and locations to cover no matter when you decide to buy a ticket.

ADVENTURES BY DISNEY: DISNEY BACKSTAGE

You had to figure that Disney was going to be a little more expensive, but the actual cost of this week-long experience might shock you.

To be fair, the package includes meals and accommodation at both the Loews Hollywood Hotel and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.

This Disney backstage adventure includes a tour of the Walt Disney Studios & Archives, an Imagineering tour, a Hollywood walking tour, and a tour of the Jim Henson Company.

Most of these tours are only available via this week-long package. The entire itinerary takes six days to complete, and it will keep you busy with plenty of fun activities from start to finish.

  • $4,999 for Adults | $4,749 for Children
  • Availability: 2-4 times per month
  • Duration: 6 days
  • Hotel accommodation included
  • 11 Meals included
  • VIP Disneyland ticket included

As you can probably imagine, the testimonials for this experience are quite positive ( read reviews here ).

Some guests even noted that they made friends with their tour guides and continue to stay in touch with them to this very day.

Additionally, customers also appreciated the opportunity to see some behind-the-scenes areas that bring the history of Walt Disney to life.

One visitor even suggested that this trip allowed them to become kids again as they explored secret and wonderful locations at the happiest place on earth.

COMBO DEALS

If you're looking for a better price on these tours and other activities in Hollywood, you might want to consider one of the following combo packages.

Studios like Warner Bros. and Universal often work with tour companies to provide their services at lower prices.

There are several options to mull over, and almost all of them provide additional tours and services.

If you plan on spending more than one day in Hollywood, these combo deals are definitely worth a look.

GO CITY LOS ANGELES ALL-INCLUSIVE PASS

There's a reason that this is one of the premier attraction passes in Los Angeles.

In addition to offering access to a variety of notable locations, they also provide admission to some studio tours.

In particular, you can enjoy the Universal Studios tour, the Warner Bros. Studio tour and (sometimes) the Sony Pictures Studio tour with one version of this pass or another.

The Warner Bros. Studio tour is currently only offered with their Explorer Pass, and you'll need to purchase at least a 3-Day All-Inclusive pass to get admission to the Universal Studios tour .

Given that this tourist pass also supplies tickets to Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott's Berry Farm, it's fair to say that the Go City Los Angeles All-Inclusive Pass could be a real bargain.

  • $109 for 1-day pass
  • $164 for 2-day pass
  • $284 for 3-day pass
  • $344 for 4-day pass
  • $374 for 5-day pass
  • $434 for 7-day pass
  • $99 for 2 choices
  • $119 for 3 choices
  • $144 for 4 choices
  • $154 for 5 choices
  • $189 for 7 choices
  • This attraction pass is available every day of the week
  • Includes up to 3 movie studio tours

Read our post comparing the different tourist attraction passes available in Los Angeles.

TRANSPORTATION COMBO PACKAGES

If you're looking for transportation to and from each movie studio tour, the following services are available.

The advantage of these combo deals is that you won't have to pay for parking, gas, or car rental in order to visit each location.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included with each package.

Take your time and enjoy the studio tour without having to worry about anything else!

  • Not currently available as of January 2024

Universal Studio Tours Sign

CELEBRITY HOMES TOUR COMBO PACKAGES

These combo deals provide both a celebrity home tour and a movie studio tour.

Each option includes transportation not only around Hollywood but also to and from the studios.

While some of these services use a mini-bus, others drive you around town in a luxury sedan or an SUV.

Each company offers both hotel pickup and drop-off.

Expect these outings to last for between 6-8 hours on average.

  • Warner Bros. Studio Tour & Movie Star Homes Tour (Starline Tours) - $119/Adults | $99/Children
  • Alternatively, we offer our own self-guided celebrity homes tour .

This might be a good way to save even more money if you don't mind doing a bit of driving around Hollywood and Beverly Hills.

TIPS FROM LOCALS AND TRAVELERS

While we provide the details of what each tour offers, costs, and other information, here you can see what members of our Los Angeles Travel Tips group on Facebook have to say.

There are plenty of fans of the Warner Brothers tour.

la tour movie

And some enjoyed Paramount as well.

If you have to choose only one, between Warners or Paramount, these members’ insight may help.

la tour movie

Universal Studios received mixed reviews. Some people felt it was a waste of time and money.

On the other hand, Issa had a fantastic time, so much so that she wrote a very long post detailing her time there and how to make the most of your visit.

Box office: ‘despicable me 4’ easily wins with $44.7m as ‘longlegs’ stuns with record $22.6m launch.

'Longlegs' delivers the biggest opening ever for Tom Quinn's Oscar-winning indie outfit Neon among other milestones. Elsewhere, Apple's 'Fly Me to the Moon' takes flight with $10 million thanks to the 55 and older crowd.

Longlegs, Maika Monroe, 2024.

Animation continue to the be hero of the summer office thanks to Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2 , but Neon ‘s Longlegs can rightly take a bow after scoring the biggest opening for an independent horror pic in a decade with $22.6 million in ticket sales.

In a notable milestone, the Despicable Me/Minions franchise has crossed $5 billion mark in global ticket sales, a feat no animated franchise has achieved before. (Earlier this week, Illumination announced that a Minions 3 is in the works.)

The big surprise of the weekend is the better-than-expected performance of writer-director Osgood Perkins Longlegs , a serial killer chiller starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage. The tense FBI procedural, playing in 2,510 cinemas, is the biggest opening ever for Tom Quinn ‘s Oscar-winning specialty production and distribution outfit Neon, home of Parasite .

Among other records, it’s Cage’s biggest opening since National Treasure: Book of Secrets almost twenty years ago in 2007. It’s also the top R-rated opening of 2024 to date. And it is the only indie horror film of the past decade to open to $20 million or more (this excludes one of the Insidious movies from Focus Features/Universal).

Going back as far as 25 years, Neon also notes that very few indie films have crossed the $20 million threshold in their debut. For purposes of context, however, many indie titles — including Neon releases — only open a few theaters, versus rolling out nationwide from the get-go as Longlegs did.

The well-reviewed movie earned $10 million on Friday alone, including previews, and wasn’t hampered by a C+ Cinemascore, since it’s common for the horror genre to land a grade in the C range. Fun fact: More than 70 percent of ticket buyers were between ages 18 and 34.

In North America, Inside Out 2 came in third in its fifth weekend with $20.8 million for a domestic tally of $572.6 million. Overseas, it earned another $50.2 million from 47 markets for a foreign cume of $777.5 million. It has yet to open in Japan, where it could do sizeable business.

Paramount’s holdover A Quiet Place: Day One continues to entice moviegoers and placed fourth despite the entry of Longlegs . The prequel scared up another $11.8 million this weekend from 3,378 theaters for a domestic total of $116.2 million through Sunday.

Apple Original Films ‘ continues its theatrical ambitions with the release of director Greg Berlanti’s Fly Me to the Moon , a romantic comedy starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum . The period space-age movie, distributed by Sony on behalf of Apple, opened to a subdued $10 million from 3,356 sites to place No. 5. The number isn’t a surprise considering the film was fueled by older adults; more than half of ticket buyers were 45 or older, including 32 percent over the age of 55.

At the specialty box office, new offerings include A24 ‘s Sing Sing , which is on course to score a solid per-theater average of $34,280 or thereabouts from four theaters in Los Angeles and New York. The film, from director Greg Kwedar, chronicles an arts program at the infamous Sing Sing prison.

Is it another “Summer of Love” for Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello?

The on-again, off-again couple sparked reconciliation rumors over the weekend with a soccer game sighting.

The “Señorita” singers were photographed sitting together at the Copa América final at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday.

While the pair were not caught on camera engaging in any PDA, they chatted and smiled at each other in fan footage.

X users speculated that they are back together, with one joking , “she never leaving that man alone and he ain’t leaving her alone period.”

Another called them “Jelena 2.0” in reference to Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber’s tumultuous romance , and a third wrote that they had “prayed for” this reconnection.

Reps for Mendes, 25, and Cabello, 27, have yet to respond to Page Six’s requests for comment.

The performers first dated from 2019 to 2021 .

The duo announced their split with a social media statement at the time, writing, “We’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends.”

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes

In April 2023, they made headlines for kissing at the Coachella music festival and enjoying an Eras Tour date night the following month.

They called it quits again by June 2023.

During their time apart, Mendes has been romantically linked to singer Sabrina Carpenter , chiropractor Jocelyne Miranda and TV personality Charlie Travers — but has yet to confirm any of the headlines.

Camila Cabello

As for Cabello, the former Fifth Harmony member dated tech wiz Austin Kevitch from 2022 to 2023.

She sent tongues wagging on social media earlier this month by posting a cryptic TikTok about the temptation to “go back” to an unnamed ex.

“I’d still hit,” the “X Factor” alum captioned the upload, calling this the “sad truth.”

‘Fly Me to the Moon’, Jason Isbell at the Bowl and the best of L.A. arts and culture this week

Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in "Fly Me to the Moon," in theaters July 12.

Hello and welcome to another otherworldly edition of the Essential Arts newsletter where the artistic minds of The Times’ Entertainment section give you a fast guide to our top picks and plans for arts- and culture-related things to do around L.A. We’ve got another fresh crop this week that encompasses romantic movies about moon landings and artwork that appears to be from another planet.

Best bets: What’s on our radar this week

You’re reading Essential Arts

Our critics and reporters guide you through events and happenings of L.A.

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

1. Tellers of Tales: The Films of Powell & Pressburger The innovative British directing-writing-producing duo of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger will be celebrated by a 10-film series at the Academy Museum that includes 4K restorations of many of their greatest, most gorgeously crafted works together, including 1945’s “I Know Where I’m Going,” 1946’s “A Matter of Life and Death,” 1951’s “Tales of Hoffman” and Powell’s notorious 1960 solo effort “Peeping Tom.” The series will launch with a rare 35mm nitrate screening of 1947’s ecstatic “Black Narcissus,” including a conversation with Powell’s widow, the Oscar-winning film editor Thelma Schoonmaker. Through Aug. 19. 6067 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, academymuseum.org – Mark Olsen

2. “Fatherland” Regardless of what side of the political spectrum you’re on, you’ll likely find “Fatherland” riveting, especially given the intimacy of the Fountain Theatre in East Hollywood. The 75-minute documentary play, conceived and directed by the Fountain Artistic Director Stephen Sachs, centers on the son who tipped off the FBI about his father’s involvement in the Jan. 6 insurrection. The show is taken entirely from court transcripts, case evidence and public statements. Only six performances remain before the world premiere ends its twice-extended run and the stellar four-person cast moves on to reprise their performances in an off-Broadway run. Through July 21. 5060 Fountain Ave., L.A. fountaintheatre.com — Ashley Lee

3. “Rusalka” The water nymph asks the silvery moon to find her prince. “Song to the Moon,” the aria from Dvorák’s best-known opera, contains the Czech composer’s most inspired melody. But artificial moonlight rarely cuts it on the opera stage, which may help explain why “Rusalka” languished in this country for 75 years before San Diego gave the U.S. premiere in 1975. When Rusalka sings to the moon this weekend and next in Pacific Opera Project’s new production, she will address the real thing: The performances are under the stars at Descanso Gardens. Through July 21. Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, pacificoperaproject.com — Mark Swed

4. Jason Isbell at Hollywood Bowl Jason Isbell fought hard for his vantage point in folk and country music. He’s progressive but unsentimental, steeped in music history but thoroughly of this time, and hard-bitten about his journey to sobriety yet genuinely hopeful for redemption. Over nine solo albums (following his stint in the Drive-By Truckers), Isbell and his frequent, excellent backing band the 400 Unit have earned their place in the contemporary songwriting canon. 2023’s “Weathervanes” won the Grammy for Americana album, all while keeping a droll sense of humor (he’s sort-of responsible for the “30-50 feral hogs” meme) and stretching his talents (he had a much-praised role in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”). Here he performs an unlikely KCRW combo bill with experimental electro-pop duo Sylvan Esso and the beguiling young vocalist Uwade. 7 p.m. Sunday, July 21. Hollywood Bowl, 2301 Highland Ave, Los Angeles. $15-$159. — August Brown

The Getty’s massive PST ART program will kick off with a bang Sept. 15 with a monumental daytime fireworks display at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum created by contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang. Cai, who was commissioned to create the experience, is known for his explosive displays, and uses eco-friendly pigments and dyes rather than traditional fireworks in his work. Titled “WE ARE: Explosion Event for PST ART,” the display will also feature over 1,000 aerial drones and is meant to highlight the major theme of this year’s PST ART event, which is “Art and Science Collide.”

“The Beatles LOVE,” ended its 18-year run at the Mirage on July 8. The only licensed Beatles production in the world, and a cornerstone of the avant-garde circus company Cirque Du Soleil’s Las Vegas empire, “LOVE” was seen by more than 11.8 million people over the years. It became necessary to close the show after Hard Rock bought the Mirage from MGM Resorts International in 2023.

Willem Dafoe photographed in New York

Actor Willem Dafoe has been named the new artistic director of the theater department of La Biennale di Venezia for 2025-2026. Biennale Teatro was founded as an independent department of the world-renowned art festival in 1943.

The Getty recently acquired a masterpiece of the Flemish renaissance . Titled “Madonna of the Cherries,” circa 1529 by Quentin Metsys, the painting was purchased for about $13.5 million. It was rediscovered after it was long thought to have been lost. It depicts the Madonna and child hugging on a royal throne, and originally disappeared in 1668 after being purchased by an anonymous buyer. It resurfaced in Paris in 1920 but was almost unrecognizable after being overpainted. The still-marred version reappeared in 2015 and was finally restored to its original condition and recognized as the lost masterwork. “Madonna of the Cherries,” will be shown in the Getty Center’s North Pavilion.

A remarkably well-preserved marble statue of Hermes was recently discovered in an ancient Roman sewer in the Bulgarian village of Rupite. The 7-foot-tall discovery was made during an excavation near the former city of Heraclea Sintica, which was abandoned after AD 500.
