Sharjah Safari

A new world-class tourist destination, Sharjah Safari is the new spot for all adventure lovers.

Experience real adventure in the largest safari in the world outside Africa, and enjoy an adventure that takes you to the jungles, here in Sharjah

Sharjah Safari

A new tourist destination, inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on February 17, 2022, Sharjah Safari is the new spot for all adventure lovers. A picturesque place nestled in the lap of nature, Sharjah Safari constitutes a rare opportunity for tourists and visitors to observe the endemic wildlife in Africa. Native African faunae roam without fences, in an environment similar to their natural environment. Sharjah Safari is host to more than 120 species of animals, which live in Africa and up to 50,000 animals, ranging from birds, reptiles and mammals; such as lions, elephants, giraffes, black and white rhinoceros, crocodiles, deer, bulls and many other endangered animals.

12 different environments, inspired by all parts of Africa, represent the life and terrain of the continent, and the animals and birds that live in it. Sharjah Safari contains several areas that simulate the real regions of Africa, and the first area, "To Africa", takes visitors on a unique walking experience to explore the wildlife endemic to the islands and archipelagos scattered along the eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. The second region, the Sahel, is represented by deserts, pastures and diverse wildlife. It extends in Africa from the Atlantic coast of Mauritania in the west to Eritrea and the Red Sea in the east, and is a transitional area rich in wildlife between the Sahara Desert in the north and the Savannah to the south.

The third region, the Savannah, extends in eastern and southern Africa from the coast in the north to the Kalahari in the southwest. This African tropical grassland covers half the area of the African continent and is home to the largest concentration of biodiversity on Earth. While the fourth region, the Serengeti, celebrates the largest migration of animals in the world every year, as large groups of herbivores migrate across the Serengeti plains, and works to attract predators and animals that feed on carrion, crossing the Mara River, where Nile crocodiles lie in the murky waters, a dangerous predator to migratory herbivores.

The fifth region, Nkorongoro, formed from an extinct crater, is a unique ecosystem and home to some of Africa's most famous species. While the sixth region, Moremi, is inspired by the canyons and valleys of southwest Africa that were formed over centuries by heavy monsoon rains, and these dry and sandy riverbeds contain aquifers that support life throughout the dry season.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bayut.com (@bayutuae)

Sharjah Safari is home to over 1,000 animals and birds across a range of 120 species, including lions, gazelles, elephants, crocodiles and many rare African animals. Particular highlights include the extremely rare black rhino, and Wuhaida, a female southern white rhino born at the park.

Aside from the truly amazing array of wildlife, there are also over 1,000 native and African trees planted on the land, including beautiful Samar trees, and the iconic Acacia tortilis – famous for it’s striking umbrella-like shape. The majestic landscape of the park, which covers an astonishing eight square kilometres, really is a sight to behold.

Sharjah Safari Park is also home to a large and beautiful natural lake, which is encircled by various cafes, restaurants, a conference hall, a safari visitor’s tent and other impressive amenities. All in all, it’s a good alternative to Dubai Safari Park .

REGIONS IN THE PARK

There are 12 environments in the park to explore, each depicting a distinct African location and the lives of the native animals and birds. Here are some highlights of the various areas in Sharjah Safari Park Al Dhaid:

  • The first component of the park’s walking tour allows visitors to experience an eclectic array of African birds as they stroll down Baobab Avenue.
  • The next stop is the vibrant Zanzibar village, where guests can tuck into tasty eats in an authentic African setting before embarking on their wild safari.
  • Sahel, the second major region in Sharjah Safari Park, is home to deserts, grasslands and a vast range of fauna. It depicts Africa’s vast wildlife-rich corridor between the Sahara Desert and Savannah regions.
  • Only visitors in luxury automobiles continue their trek to the third zone, Savannah. This area is home to a fascinating array of spieces, including the Scimitar Oryx and Dorcas Gazelle.
  • The Serengeti settlement is the next stop. Note that this part of the trip is not for the faint of heart, as only the courageous can take selfies with the Serengeti Lion hidden behind glass. Visitors to the Serengeti will also be able to observe one of Earth’s oldest and most resilient animal species, the mighty crocodile!
  • The last region of the tour is Moremi village, where friendly animals will come across your path and say their goodbyes.

Visitors who want to spend more time in the park’s glorious outdoors before leaving can stay at the safari camp.

Visitors to Sharjah Safari will need a keen eye to spot one of the 600 or so animals wandering the property, for the park is four times the size of Monaco.

And that is exactly the spirit of discovery the new attraction’s designers are hoping for in a bid to replicate a real African safari.

Visitors to the Albridi Reserve, almost an hour from Dubai in Al Dhaid City, are in for a treat – as long as they have the patience and an eagle eye to look out for lions, giraffe and rhino roaming the vast landscape.

The 800-hectare park claims to be the largest outside Africa, and has been seven years in the making. It will welcome its first paying visitors this weekend.

Developed by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah in partnership with Maguari-One Zoo and Wildlife Consultants, Sharjah Safari will feature 12 different environments that represent the life and terrain in Africa.

It is the new home for animals and birds with a special section for giraffes, 15 of which were released in the wild to adapt to the safari atmosphere, and another section for rhinos and lions.

The emirate of Sharjah and the UAE will have a tourist attraction and an unparalleled natural destination, says park operations manager Kevin Budd. Antonie Robertson / The National

South African Kevin Budd is the operations manager for animals at Sharjah Safari and has worked for the EPAA for 24 years.

“In terms of the UAE it is big, but the design and layout is accurate to what you would see – it feels like you are in Africa,” he said.

“Our key species are the eastern black rhino, but there are others also important for conservation. like the giraffe, tortoises and a few unique bird species."

Through the EPAA, the park will become a centre for international captive breeding programmes for key species, and will partner with the European association of zoos and aquaria.

There are areas not on display to the public that will house some of the animals during the hot summer months, but others will remain outside all year round.

"Places like Botswana and the Sahel are hot, but we know it can be even hotter here in the summer, so we have had to be sensitive to that," Mr Budd said.

The park's inhabitants have enough shade, water and food for them to live all year. The more sensitive species will be brought inside for the summer.

Currently, about 600 animals are roaming the park, with about 300 more expected to arrive later this month and in March.

By the end of the year, the numbers are expected to grow to more than 1,000.

“By the time we reopen in October after the summer, we hope to be fully stocked,” Mr Budd said.

"A lot of animals are coming direct from South Africa , or from elsewhere in Europe from zoos we have partnerships with.

“We don’t have the full complement of animals because several shipments have been repeatedly delayed because of the pandemic.

“There was a shortage of cargo freight and a big increase in the associated costs."

When it came to the experience of visiting the park, Mr Budd said that you might feel as though you have travelled abroad.

“This safari is authentic. When you drive around early morning or late in the afternoon, you forget you are in the UAE – it feels as if you are in Africa.”

Depending on the package visitors pay for, there are protected areas where they can leave their vehicles and visit crocodiles and lions on foot.

A bronze ticket for a three-hour walking tour of the park with a guide costs Dh40, and just Dh15 for under 12s.

A silver ticket offers one seat on a six-hour bus tour of the park for over 12s at Dh120. Children under 12 pay just Dh50 for a silver ticket, while groups of 20 or more pay Dh100 each.

For a ride around the park in a luxury car, visitors can buy a gold ticket for Dh275, Dh120 for under 12s or Dh1,500 for a group of six people.

There is a safari camp for vehicles to stop, where guests can buy refreshments and visit other animals.

Security and animal welfare key concerns of designers

A perimeter fence secures the animals inside Sharjah Safari , with each section having its own security boundary to stop animals from leaving the park.

Dr Koen Brouwer of Maguari-One Zoo and Wildlife Consultants, a specialist design company that works with animal enclosures, said the project is unique.

“This was unlike anything we had done before,” he said.

“People can go on a journey to Africa when they visit.

“It was quite challenging, and not just about fencing off 800 hectares and releasing animals – this took seven years of work to create this feeling where animals are comfortable and respected, and guests can have a pleasant and educational visit.

“We had to work with lions and rhinos, so security was very important.

“From day one, we decided to create a separate area for lions where they and the visitors would be safe.”

More than 50,000 browse trees have been planted to provide food for giraffe and antelope, while each area has its own security fence to stop animals breaking out on to the nearby E611.

One animal to look out for is Bridi, the first African female giraffe born at Sharjah Safari, whose parents arrived from South Africa five years ago.

The vastness of the park will make it tricky to spot animals lurking in the undergrowth, but the possibility of snatching a glance of a rare marabou stork or radiator tortoise will make it all worthwhile, Dr Brouwer said.

“Animals have a lot of space in these areas, and a lot of choice, and that is very important for their welfare.

“Safari is supposed to be an adventure of discovery, you are lucky if you see something.

“It is the thrill of driving through the park, with a good guide who can talk about landscape and conservation, as well as the animals.

“This does not happen in a regular zoo, we did not want to create a feeling of seeing nothing but of something totally different – a real adventure.”

Sharjah Safari will be open daily from 8.30am until 6.30pm. Last entry is 2pm for gold and silver ticket holders and 4pm for those with bronze tickets.

Guide To Sharjah Safari Park

The long-awaited Sharjah Safari park, which promises to be the biggest outside of Africa, will open its doors to visitors for the first time close to Dubai . The huge animal attraction is located in Al Bridi Nature Reserve in Al Dhaid, Sharjah, ( map ) and encompasses an area of eight square kilometres.

Sharjah Safari park is host to even more than 120 creatures, including rare African animals, the black rhinoceros being the most unusual. The land has been planted with over 1,000 native and African plants, such as the umbrella-shaped Acacia Tortilis.

At Sharjah Safari Park, What Can You Expect To See?

Visitors to Sharjah Safari park will be able to observe more than 1,000 animals and birds on opening day, including 70 African species. One of the main attractions is the black rhinoceros, which is regarded as one of the most endangered creatures.

Wuhaida, the very first female southern white rhino born at Sharjah Safari park in August of last year, is another highlight. Wuhaida was born as a result of the Safari’s African native species breeding programme, which is backed by the United Nations.

Well, of course, there are plenty of places to visit in Sharjah , Sharjah Safari Park is one of them. Do you want to know everything there is to do at Sharjah Safari Park? You’ve arrived at the right location.

Sharjah Safari Park in Al Bridi Nature Reserve has been in the works for seven years and does not disappoint. The UAE’s greatest wildlife attraction is simply enormous, designed to imitate a true African safari and embrace 12 different settings.

When you visit Sharjah Safari Park, here are seven of the coolest things to do.

Watch Around 100 Animals And Birds

Isn’t seeing the magnificent creatures the main reason you came? Marvel at the park’s massive expanse and the wonderful animals that inhabit it. The park is massive, measuring roughly 800 hectares (2.5 times the size of Central Park, for comparison). It’s also home to around 1000 animals and birds, including giraffes, wildebeest, lions, elephants, flamingos, rhinos, and crocodiles, among 120 species. Meanwhile, over 1000 indigenous and African trees offer all the required greenery and vegetation for the animals and flora to thrive.

Consider Taking A Walking Tour

To provide the most genuine experience possible, the park is divided into 12 habitats, each of which is designed to represent a different African region.

Bronze tickets cost Dhs40 for over 12s (Dhs15 for children aged three to 12) and allow you to take a two-to-three-hour walking tour of the Africa zone.

Take A Bus Tour

If walking isn’t your thing, a silver ticket (Dhs120 for those over 12 and Dhs50 for those aged three to 12) can get you on a bus trip that will take you around all the zones save the “Serengeti” in about five hours.

Giraffe & White Rhino

The park contains a separate area dedicated to giraffes, 15 of which were released into the wild and have subsequently adapted to safari life. Bridi, the first African female giraffe born at Sharjah Safari, is the star of the show (and the giraffe everyone wants to see)

However, Bridi does not receive all the focus. When Wuhaida, a southern white rhino, was born in Sharjah Safari’s breeding programme last August, she was the first of her endangered species to be born there.

The Savannah area at Sharjah Safari Park is based on the same one found in Africa; it stretches from the seashore in the north to Kalhari in the south in eastern and Southern Africa.

It’s one of the most visited tropical destinations on the planet. If you enjoy the outdoors, this site is a must-see. Furthermore, it is surrounded by African grassland, which is an incredible sight to see.

Savannah also has the most biodiversity on the planet, so you can expect nothing but a wonderful adventure there.

al dhaid safari park

Last but not least, the Moremi area is influenced by Africa’s southwest region’s spectacular canyons and valleys, which have been shaped over time by monsoon rains.

You may also see the gorgeous yellow giraffes here. Prepare to have an incredible time in this hidden gem, and don’t forget to snap plenty of photos.

Relax and refuel

Visits to the park are only going to get better, owing to a large natural lake that will be flanked by cafes and restaurants, as well as a conference hall and visitor’s camp, great for replenishing after all the excitement. (see also info about Dubai Miracle Garden )

What Are The Sharjah Safari Park Ticket Prices?

Sharjah Safari’s 12 themed habitats are accessible through a variety of ticket categories. Bronze tickets, which include a two-to-three-hour walking tour of one habitat, cost Dh15 for youngsters aged 3 to 12, and Dh40 for those aged 12 and over.

Silver tickets are Dh50 for children aged 3 to 12, and Dh120 for those aged 12 and over, including admission to all ecosystems except the Serengeti. The ticket includes a bus seat and is good for five to six hours.

Visitors who purchase gold tickets will get access to all environments, as well as a ride in a luxury automobile and a private guide for a five- to six-hour tour. Children aged 2 to 12 pay Dh120, while those aged 12 and over, pay Dh275.

Sharjah Safari Park was an amazing experience for my family and I. The park is well-maintained and the animals seem to be well taken care of. The open zoo concept made it feel like we were in a natural habitat with the animals. Definitely worth a visit for any animal lovers out there.

Sharjah will open the doors to the largest safari park outside Africa later this year or early next year, said a senior official.

Located near Al Dhaid, the safari park will house hundreds of different animals including giraffes, rhinos, turtles, crocodiles, pythons, flamingos, and other large reptiles, birds, and wild animals. More than a hundred animals have already arrived at the Al Bridi reserve, which will be spread over 16 sq km.

“We're developing a safari park in Sharjah, which is going to be the biggest outside Africa. The safari park will be located next to Al Dhaid city and it's going to open by the end of this year or early next year,” said Marwan Al Sarkal, executive chairman of Shurooq.

The project is jointly developed by Shurooq, the Sharjah government, and the Environment and Protected Areas Authority.

Al Sarkal said Sharjah plans diverse offerings to visitors in ecotourism, heritage, historical sightings, adventure tourism, and other sectors.

“We'll try to create an ample offering in each sector. We're not going to focus on things that our neighbouring emirates are doing. We want to complement each other,” he said on the sidelines of the four-day Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2020, which concluded at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) on Wednesday (May 19).

Al Sarkal said ecotourism in Kalba and archaeological sites in Mleiha are unique places in the UAE that residents and tourists must explore.

“You can discover the archaic sites when the first man moved from Africa to Asia and settled in Mleiha. A lot of people don’t know how man moved around the world and Mleiha gives a sneak peek into this. In Mleiha, visitors can walk through the mountains, valleys and caves as well,” he said.

There are plenty of places that residents can visit in Sharjah such as Al Montazah Waterpark, Al Majaz Waterfront, Noor Island, Rain Room and Butterfly Island, he added.

The Shurooq executive chairman also cited Khor Fakkan's attractive touristy destinations for families such as gurgling waterfalls, beaches and trekking opportunities in mountainous areas.

Shurooq is also developing a retreat and a waterpark in Khor Fakkan and a hotel and a shopping mall at Kalba.
