Travel tips for Australia tours
If you’re considering booking a trip to Australia, here are a few things you might want to know:
- Read up on the local slang. While Australians still speak English, it’s not the same as it is in the U.S. You’ll notice this as soon as our Australia tours begin!
- If you’ll need internet access, get a hotspot on your phone. It’ll be a lot more reliable (and cheaper) than hotel or public WiFi.
- Cars drive on the left, so look both ways before crossing the street.
- The same applies for sidewalks—so make sure you walk on the left, too!
That depends on how much you want to see and do on your trip to Australia. Our Australia travel packages range from 12-22 days, so there’s truly something for everyone.
First, remember that when it’s winter in North America, it’s summer in Australia, and vice versa. While Australian winters are much milder than they are in the majority of North America, you’ll still want to bring a warm jacket on our Australia tours.
You’ll also want to bring some reef-safe sunscreen. The sun can be much stronger in Australia—even during their winter.
Some of the most popular places to visit include:
- Melbourne, a hip city full of fantastic food
- The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system
- Uluru, a sacred sandstone site in the Outback
- The Sydney Opera house, an iconic site on the water
On our trips to Australia, there’s no shortage of local cuisines to indulge in. Here are the foods you’ll have to try:
- Barbecued “snags,” also known as sausages
- Meat pies, a savory, sweet Australian delicacy
- Vegemite (it’s an acquired taste)
- Tim Tams. Bite off opposite corners and sip your tea with it for what the locals call a Tim Tam Slam!
As you plan your trip to Australia, keep in mind that you will need to purchase an individual visa from the Australian government or the Electronic Travel Authority website. You need a valid passport to apply and it only takes a few days to process.

Plus, when you go to Australia on a group tour, you’ll get to experience the country while making new friends in your group, too.

Australia FAQ's
Is it safe to travel australia.
Australia is by far one of the safest countries in the world. Crime is generally pretty low and the risk of being robbed, mugged or attacked is extremely unlikely. But, like every country in the world you do have to use basic rules of common sense and treat the locals with respect. However, the simple answer is YES, Australia is super safe to travel!
Where should I start my gap year to Australia, Sydney or Melbourne?
It all boils down to personal preference (or what your friends tell you to do 😂). We would always suggest doing your research, to help with the decision making. We've covered a whole bunch of different articles on both Sydney and Melbourne to help you decide.
But, if you want a short 1 line breakdown of each, here we go...
Sydney : Known for its famous harbour, warm weather and cosmopolitan vibe. You’ll never be far from the beach or a gym, that's for sure. Sydney beach suburbs are full of surfers and there’s always a barbie nearby.
Melbourne : Known for its hipster vibes, world famous coffee and artsy laneways. Melbourne is a city with a tonne of character & a very European flair. This multicultural city was rated ‘The World’s Most Livable City’ 7 years in a row.
Should I do a Gap Year to Australia?
There is no better country in the world to work abroad than Australia. With a working holiday visa process that is world leading and endless possibilities when it comes to finding work you’d be crazy not to do it! The work-life balance in Australia makes it such an attractive destination for students of all ages. Plus...the life experience you’ll gain from doing a year abroad in Australia is truly invaluable!
How can I travel the East Coast of Australia?
One of the absolute bucket list things to do when visiting Australia is travelling the East Coast. There are lots of different ways to do it but 1 thing is for sure...you need a place to start. 2 of the most popular places to start are Sydney and Melbourne . You can also start in Brisbane or Cairns but most travellers prefer to start south and make their way up the famous coastline.
The next most important thing to consider is ‘How’. Travelling the East Coast of Australia is commonly done either in a hop-on hop-off bus or you can rent a campervan.
I’m travelling alone, will I meet other people?
Australia is such an incredible place to travel solo, it’s safe, everyone speaks english and there are tonnes of travellers just like you living the dream down under. What makes these starter packages so popular is the hassle free experience end to end. The crew will pick you up when you arrive, get you settled in and help you plan your life for both work and travel.
What kind of people come on these group tours?
It doesn’t matter whether you’re travelling solo or coming with a friend, the trips are full of different people from all corners of the world.
You can be a student on a Gap Year to Australia, a professional taking a short holiday from work or just deciding to go on a backpacking adventure to escape life... these Australia Group Tours are the perfect solution!
What are the benefits of travelling as a group?
Travelling Australia in a group Vs travelling solo is a very different experience. Travelling alone you often feel like you have more freedom but you will need to plan out your days to get the best of each. Travelling solo does give you the ability to have way more lazy days! Travelling Australia as a group will involve more structure in your day achieving way more than when travelling on your own.
Choosing the right travel company will allow you to not only do the tourist spots but also head off the beaten track a little more.
Another huge benefit of travelling as a group is that you will arrive and make an instant group of friends... we see groups arriving as complete strangers and leaving as best friends! Travelling solo can sometimes be a little lonely if you are not confident enough to try and make new friends each day!
Is there a Facebook Group to chat to others before we go?
There sure is! We have a whole community of over 1,000 other travellers just like you! It’s a great place to ask questions, share ideas or even upload photos from your travels. Everyone is super welcoming and always ready to help if needed. You can Join the Feel Free Family Here . You will also be invited into a WhatsApp group a week before your tour starts, this is a perfect chance to get chatting with others on the same trip.
Should I do a stopover on route to Australia?
If you’re going to travel thousands of miles across the world you might as well make an even bigger adventure out of it! With Australia being so far away from almost any other country it is very common for travellers to stopover in Asia on their way down under. We often have individuals doing at least a couple of trips in Asia before or after they travel in Australia.
How long do I need to work & travel in Australia?
You can ask this question to 10 different people and get 10 different answers. The simple answer is what's right in front of you. If you have a 1 year working holiday visa planned for Australia...use it ALL! You will only get the chance once and once it’s gone...it’s gone! You can easily cover your bucket list spots in 3-6 months leaving you 6-9 months left for working.
If you plan to do your 2nd year visa we would suggest getting the travel out the way nice and early from Melbourne or Sydney upto Cairns. That way you can do your ‘Farm Work’ up in the sunny state of Queensland!
I want to work in Australia, where do I even start?
Finding work in Australia is actually a lot easier than you might think. Like everything you just need to know where to look, how to go about it and what to expect once you start. Preparation is the secret sauce when looking for work in Australia that’s for sure! The Welcome to Sydney & Welcome to Melbourne starter packages are the best and easiest ways to get started!
How much will I get paid working in Australia?
The idea of living next to the beach in a hot & sunny Australia is already convincing enough to jump on a flight half way across the world. But what if I told you the minimum wage is a whopping AUD $19.50+ per hour, pretty incredible right? With the endless opportunities Australia has to offer coupled with a healthy salary each month...why would you not do a working holiday in Australia?!
Do I need a visa to travel in Australia?
You sure will do! There are a couple of options and we suggest you organise this sooner rather than later!
If you plan on only travelling in Australia then you’ll need a ‘Visitor Visa’.
If you intend on working whilst travelling in Australia then you’ll need a ‘Working Holiday Visa’ (417) or ‘Work and Holiday Visa’ (462), depending on which country you’re from.
You can find out more and apply for your Visa via the Australian Government website . It’s a pretty simple process but as always, slide in the DM’s if you’d like some help and advice.

Welcome to Australia
Marvels both natural and monumental astound throughout this "dreamtime" land down under... from the monolithic Ayers Rock (Uluru)... to a foodie tour in the multicultural melting pot of Sydney... to Australia's white-sailed landmark... and in the rainbow hues woven throughout the waters that make up the the Great Barrier Reef... the adventure begins here.
Sydney opera house, one of the world's most famous buildings... and more than just an opera house.
One of the most famous and recognizable structures dominating the skyline of iconic Sydney Harbour is the Sydney Opera House. With its striking modern expressionist design by Danish architect Jørn Utzon resembling a series of concrete "shells", it was completed in 1973 after nearly 15 years of construction, and has since become one of the world's most renowned buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not simply a single "opera house" as its name may imply, this major performing arts center houses numerous performance spaces including concert halls, theatres and recording studios, and is home to Opera Australia, the Australian Ballet, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Sydney Theatre Company.
Uluru (Ayers Rock) in the Outback
Aboriginal traditions and a natural wonder at uluru (ayers rock) in australia's "red centre".
Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock) is a massive red sandstone monolith rising dramatically out of the desert Outback (or "Red Centre") in Australia's Northern Territory, and is one of the country's most recognizable features and popular attractions. Sacred to the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, the local Aboriginal people of the region, Uluru is geologically classified as an inselberg (an "island mountain"); a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of Australia's Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, it's a natural wonder that will take your breath away…
The Great Barrier Reef
Discover australia's amazing great barrier reef.
Australia's Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is longer than the Great Wall of China, and considered the largest living thing on Earth. With a biology presentation and snorkeling demonstration en route, Tauck takes you on a cruise to the Outer Reef to swim, snorkel or sightsee in a glass-bottom vessel – or enjoy optional activities like scuba diving, helmet diving and more.
Sydney Harbour
There's no better way to experience iconic sydney harbour than aboard an evening cruise.
With its iconic skyline comprising some of the 20th century's most innovative architecture, Australia's Sydney Harbour is perhaps the most recognizable urban waterfront on Earth. Two of the Harbour's most remarkable "residents" include the striking Sydney Harbour Bridge – the world's tallest steel arch bridge, opened in 1932 and dubbed "The Coathanger" by locals due to its shape – and the Sydney Opera House, one of the world's most distinctive buildings since its completion in 1973 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There's no better way to enjoy the Harbour's highlights than aboard a private evening cruise featuring a reception and dinner.
Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park
Discover aboriginal traditions at tjapukai aboriginal cultural park in cairns.
Established in Cairns, Tropical North Queensland, in 1987, Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park has been sharing the authentic culture and traditions of the local Djabugay Aboriginal people for over three decades through performance, dance, cuisine and the arts. On your visit, you may learn how to "shake a leg" by joining in traditional performances, make fire without a matchstick, and create the haunting sounds of the didgeridoo.

A unique small group journey into the outback
Odyssey offers a small group tour of Australia providing a journey between cities with just 250 years of European history, and an outback, which has some of the oldest known geologic material on earth. Importantly, it has one of the longest and most truly fascinating periods of human settlement, which we seek to convey through our collection of small group outback tour programs. This collection of outback tours for seniors takes the senior couple or solo traveller on a guided tour through the national park network, into the Flinders range including Wilpena pound, Birdsville, or beyond Broken hill. In the Northern Territory to Watarrka national park and King’s canyon or Tennant creek. Priority is given to sourcing indigenous guide to share their knowledge of outback Australia on these outback tours for seniors.
Indigenous Australians settled, possibly via a land bridge on the continent from Southeast Asia, at least 85,000 years before the first Europeans from Portugal and Spain began exploration in the 17th century. For senior and mature travellers, a small group outback tour of Australia is a unique experience, an outback adventure and an inspiration for the mature traveller interested in a small group journey. You can travel along the Oodnadatta Track , journey over the Nullarbor Plain, visit the Kimberley region or watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean from Broome. On an Odyssey outback tour you have the chance, not just to experience the amazing landscape, but to learn about indigenous culture from indigenous guides and from the physical evidence still available, including rock art in the Bungle Bungle Ranges and the fish traps at Brewarrina .
Australia is a country the size of America, but with a population of just 25 million, and one of the longest coastlines in the World. Some 80% of the population lives on Australia ‘s east coast, separated from what is known as the outback by the low mountains of the Great Dividing Range. Australia ‘s geographic diversity, in landforms, flora, and wildlife, is part of its charm, providing the back drop for a small group outback adventure in the winter period . Whilst the Great Barrier reef, kangaroos and koalas are well known, the great biodiversity of the native Australian wildlife is less well known, and an escorted tour, complete with a local guide into the outback, provides an amazing opportunity. The biodiversity present is often missed until a good tour guide or travel expert shares their knowledge with you. Our small group tours of Australia including any of chosen Australian outback tour or air charter allows you to travel on an epic journey across one of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating countries. Take a journey across the outback and experience a national park such as Purnululu National Park , the Blue Mountains , Kuku Yalanji, the Great Barrier reef and Kata Tjuta. These parks account for some 10% of the World’s biodiversity and on any tour of Australia, travellers can expect to meet unique wildlife, just waiting to be photographed.
Reaching your Destinations
Travel in Australia can be a challenge. Once you leave the major cities of Sydney , Melbourne or Brisbane on a journey by car, or on an escorted tour by coach, the sheer scale of the country begins to reveal itself as the journey unfolds. It is on a scale often unrecognised when flying, for example, to Cairns or Port Douglas from Sydney to explore a UNESCO world heritage site such as the Daintree rainforest or the Great Barrier reef in far North Queensland. You may arrive in Cairns in less than three hours by plane, but on the road, through the outback, this journey for the tour group, becomes an outback adventure, that can run for days. It can become an epic journey, one that requires careful planning and destinations selected well in advance, if you are to arrive safely at your outback destination.
The same rules apply for the journey to Alice Springs and Uluru (Ayers rock ) in the Kata Tjuta National park. From Sydney, or any of the state capitals, this journey has much that will be missed by plane. When you travel as part of a small group tour of Australia with Odyssey, there is so much more to experience. The journey from Sydney to Uluru passes first through another UNESCO world heritage site, the Blue Mountains National Park with its extraordinary gorges and cliff faces, so easily missed unless you know where to look. Farmland and rural towns soon disappear as the drive takes us towards the Northern Territory, then three thousand kilometres away, we finally reach Uluru. This is the Australian outback!
The vast scale of the outback may not be missed on a solo journey by car, but there is so much more to experience than simply distance. When you travel as part of a small group tour of Australia with Odyssey, your programme leader, or your local guide for the day, will be sharing stories with you about the Australian wildlife, local legends or some of world’s most beautiful stories from the dreamtime of the indigenous Australian communities you visit. Aboriginal culture and colonial history both come to life in the sites and country museums we visit, and in the tales related by locals. The Odyssey Australian outback tour seeks to create programs that provide learning as well as enjoyment and adventure as you travel overland, off the beaten track through Central Australia.
Small group tours of Australia for seniors from Odyssey.
Odyssey has, over almost 40 years, put together a collection of Australia packages for air tours , coach tours and motorbike tours within Australia and overseas for the mature solo and senior couple. Our aim is to create Seniors holiday packages that older people from within Australia, and those from overseas, can enjoy. We have created a wide variety of itineraries for local and international travellers with the opportunity to take the journey, often into the Australian outback, that go beyond the icons of the Sydney Opera House or the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Uluru ( Ayers rock ) and the Great Barrier Reef. Our travel programs in Australia for seniors seek to take you off the beaten track on a road trip to explore some less well known, but still spectacular scenery. They are designed for older travellers, couples and those travelling solo. Your fellow traveller understands as does the tour manager leading the group about solo travel. There is a single supplement for solo occupancy of a hotel room. What is important though is that for both couples and the single traveller that you are with a like minded people seeking a similar travel style and experience.
We hope, like Robert Frost, to take the road less travelled. These may not be adventure Australia tours but they are wildlife Australia tours. We provide travel experiences in central Australia that follow the Birdsville track , or take the Canning stock route, camping each night. Another tour explores the Oodnadatta Track and continues into the Flinders Ranges and Brachina Gorge. We have coach tours in Australia that track the stunning scenery of the great Australian Bight or the wildflowers of Western Australia and the extraordinary Kimberley region.
This is a fascinating country and our collection of discovery Australia escorted tour(s) seek to show how its geographical isolation has allowed for an incredible biodiversity record unlike that of any other place on the planet. This can be seen in its unique Australian wildlife, from the the kangaroo, platypus, wombat, quokka, echidna and koala, to its plant diversity, expressed in the wildflowers of Western Australia . Of course not all our tours are wildlife tours, but once our outback tours of Australia leave the built up environment, then there will almost certainly be a wildlife experience at some time on your vacation.
Our group tours for seniors in Western Australia , give the traveller the opportunity to explore and learn about places such as Broome and the beautiful Kimberley coast, Kings Canyon, Kuranda the Bungle Bungle Ranges and Lake Argyll , while developing an understanding of the wet and dry climatic cycle of the Kimberley. The Aborigines have been present here for some 60,000 years in WA and we hope to come to some understanding of Aboriginal history and culture. They developed not only incredible storytelling, to pass on from generation to generation, but had the ability to manage the world’s most arid continent on a sustainable basis. The Aboriginal people also represented their life and understanding of the spirit world through their rock art and painting . We have the opportunity to explore Aboriginal rock art , particularly in the Kimberley region, on these Western Australia tours.
In South Australia , Europeans made their mark in the Flinders ranges, long after geologic processes commenced. Beautiful Wilpena Pound represents the stumps of mountains believed to have once been as tall as the Himalayas. Coober Pedy , with its unusual underground living, yielded opals to miners while other British settlers sought to develop agriculture, train lines and the telegraph through the Flinders ranges. The Oodnadatta track, also in South Australia, provides the traveller with the chance to learn more about both Aboriginal and colonial history.
A traveller with a curiosity and interest in outback Australia and fossils can join an Odyssey program in country New South Wales that ends in far North Queensland in the place where complete Dinosaur skeletons were uncovered by local people some 50 years ago or learn about Australia’s unique Megafauna . Our senior traveller can sit and consider that moment in time, just outside what is Winton today, when a herd of Dinosaurs stampeded through the mud to escape a larger Dinosaur, seeking lunch some 65 Million years ago. On our outback tour we can show you this in the exposed geological record.
What can be discovered in Australia, from the past and the current environment, is simply fascinating once the traveller escapes the cities and ventures into the outback. You can’t really capture the outback spirit from a seat in an aeroplane. You need to get out into the Northern Territory and Western Australia, or at least to drive across the Hay Plain on your way to Lake Mungo . We don’t, however, ignore the cities entirely as major cities, including Sydney , Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Perth , Darwin & Hobart , where the vast majority of the population lives, each have their contribution to make to an understanding of modern Australia. Our Victorian Gold Rush and Gardens tour begins and ends in Melbourne, there’s a dedicated tour to Adelaide in South Australia or you can take a tour that concentrates on Canberra , the nation’s capital.
Odyssey wants travellers on an Australian small group tour to experience the extraordinary variety that this country has to offer. We want you to be surprised by information that has been recently discovered by Europeans but known to Indigenous Australian for thousands of years. In the outback of Western Australia, for example, just down the road (well only a few hundred kilometres), from the UNESCO World heritage site at the Purunululu National Park (home to the Bungle Bungle rock formation ) is the world’s second largest meteorite impact crater. A meteorite struck this part of the planet some 120,000 years ago at Wolfe Creek. This crater remained unknown to Europeans until it was spotted from the air in 1947, though the local indigenous community had been telling stories of the event for many thousands of years!

South Australia holds a lot of the history of Australia’ s outback and Kangaroo island is a popular destination . Whilst Adelaide and its hills provide some of Australia’ s finest Victorian buildings and design collections from this era, as well as wines on a day tour , it is the outback of South Australia’s Flinders ranges National park, places like Brachina gorge and Lake Eyre National park , Wilpena pound , Coober Pedy and Woomera that can inspire you when on a escorted tour of this region.

It is Aboriginal history and culture , the wet and dry season of the Kimberley and the Australian outback landscapes of Rainforest, gorges and desert after the coastal town of Broome . But there is more with Ningaloo with its manta rays exploring the Indian ocean . The Kimberley region reveals the bungle bungle and the pinnacles desert . In the eastern part of Western Australia there is or was gold and the worlds second biggest meteorite crater at Wolfes creek that struck this spot 120,000 years ago. Should a traveller visit Queensland as part of a tour of Australia?
Queensland covers an area about 7 times the size of the U.K and has a rich and diverse landscape, featuring lush rainforests, beautiful beaches, coastal islands, deserts and the world-famous Great Barrier Reef, as well as the metropolitan state-capital, Brisbane .
For the majority of people on vacation, Queensland represents the beach in their minds. The Great Barrier reef , Cairns , East coast beaches at Noosa or the Gold coast , the Whitsunday islands , Fraser island , the worlds largest sand bank and Brisbane.
For the majority of visitors, they hug the east coast not venturing into the Australian Outback to discover the history of Aboriginal settlement, the river boat traffic down the Murray river or the impact the railway lines brought to regional towns at the begining of the 1900’s. But if you can get beyond Australia’s E ast coast and the G reat Barrier reef particularly in going inland into Queensland then the history is revealed from Winton with the discovery of complete dinosaur skeletons , the town where Waltzing Matilda was first played or where the airline Qantas was the germ of an idea in Longreach, then the stories and history are quickly exposed and become intriguing as they reveal the Australian character. However, the Great Barrier reef , is a UNESCO world heritage site and like Uluru Ayers rock , the Sydney Opera house and the Sydney harbour bridge or the Blue mountains the Great Barrier reef should be seen by the first time visitor to Australia’s east coast . Whilst you are in based in Cairns the Daintree rainforest is also ecologically important and should be visited. Many travellers will base themselves in Cairns when visiting the Great barrier reef , taking an escorted tour up to Port Douglas as a day tour .
Should a traveller visit the Northern Territory and Darwin as part of a tour of Australia?
During Odyssey’s escorted, small group tour for seniors to Darwin and the Northern Territory , you will learn about deep Aboriginal culture , the colonial history and the landscapes that inspire. There is enormous variety of spectacular scenery, history, wildlife and cultural activity.
The Northern Territory with its capital Darwin, has a small population of some 250,000. Famous for the natural waterholes in the Red Centre to the sprawling wetlands of Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, the NT has more diverse landscapes to explore than most countries. This state is 75% arid even though is sits above the tropic of Capricorn. Kakadu N ational park and Uluru Kata Tjuta National park are both key places to visit in the Northern territory, though they are located at each end of the State. Uluru Kata Tjuta National park is associated with the red centre or Australian outback .
Darwin is small, yet cosmopolitan mainly due to the mix of different ethnic cultures which one finds here. It is handy for a visit to both the Charles Darwin National Park , one of Australia ‘s largest wetlands and the Kakadu National Park , the country’s largest national park with its crocodiles, unique birdlife and the largest collection of Aboriginal rock art .

What are the best sights to see during your time in Sydney on a tour of Australia?
The UNESCO world heritage listed Blue Mountains , some 2 hours from the city of Sydney, is a great place to start a day tour . The unique formations of dramatic scenery encompass steep cliffs, some of Australia ‘s finest eucalyptus forests, waterfalls and small villages. The mountains include the Three Sisters, some of the world’s most beautiful awe-inspiring pinnacled peaks. In the Blue Mountains there are 140 kilometres of walking trails. However, the B lue mountains should be treated as a journey in to Australia’s outback . For the novice an escorted tour or guided tour onto any of the walking trails in the Blue mountains would be prudent. Should one wish to spend time here, beyond the day tour then the best place as a base in the Blue Mountains would be Katoomba, a small town offering arty boutique shops. Another region a two hour drive away from Sydney and a suitable day tour is the Hunter Valley , a wine producing region with over 120 wineries and some of Australia ‘s finest bloodstock. To the south of Sydney , just off the Hume highway, the road to Melbourne are the Southern highlands and the regional centre of Bowral. This regional town has a tulip festival each spring as well as an amazing National trust property to visit. The Southern Highlands and Bowral are also a suitable day tour from Sydney .

During Odyssey’s escorted, small group tour for seniors to Melbourne , we enjoy a collection of day trips, based from Melbourne CBD . We explore Melbourne’s history and architecture through its labyrinth of laneways, guided by a knowledgeable tour leader and local guides. Melbourne , Sydney’ s “rival”, is a sophisticated metropolis and should also be included as part of the itinerary on a small group tour of Australia .
Central Melbourne is the most European of Australia’ s cities and is its cultural capital. Its unique character includes its trams and its Victorian-era architecture. Melbourne offers excellent shopping and cultural sites such as art galleries and museums. Central Melbourne has colourful neighbourhoods such as Fitzroy and the beach side suburb of St. Kilda, just a Melbourne tram ride away. A Day tour out of Melbourne can be to Daylesford for a spa or to Phillip Island to watch the Penguin activity at sunset. The gold rush towns of Ballarat and Bendigo are a comfortable day tour if Melbourne is your base during your time in Victoria. A long day tour would be along the scenic Great Ocean road including the unique rock formation of the Twelve Apostles, returning back to Melbourne along the inland route or onto Port Fairy.

Geography, Environment, & Weather
Australia comprises a land area of about 7.692 million square kilometres.
Although this is just five per cent of the world’s land mass (149.45 million square kilometres), Australia is the planet’s sixth largest country after Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America and Brazil. It is also the only one of the largest six nations that is completely surrounded by water.
Australia is the smallest of the world’s continents. It is also the lowest, the flattest and (apart from Antarctica) the driest.
Due to the size of the country, Australia has serveral different climate zones. The northern section of Australia has a more tropical climate, hot and humid in the summer, and quite warm and dry in the winter, while the southern parts are cooler with mild summers and cool, sometimes rainy winters.
World Heritage Sites
There are 20 properties in Australia listed on the World Heritage List. You can view the listed properties here: (https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/au). Australia listed properties include:
The Great Barrier Reef: a site of remarkable variety and beauty on the north-east coast of Australia. It contains the world’s largest collection of coral reefs, with 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 types of mollusc.
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, formerly called Uluru (Ayers Rock – Mount Olga) National Park, features spectacular geological formations that dominate the vast red sandy plain of central Australia. Uluru, an immense monolith, and Kata Tjuta, the rock domes located west of Uluru, form part of the traditional belief system of one of the oldest human societies in the world. The traditional owners of Uluru-Kata Tjuta are the Anangu Aboriginal people.
Australian Convict Sites, includes a selection of eleven penal sites, among the thousands established by the British Empire on Australian soil in the 18 th and 19 th centuries. The sites are spread across Australia, from Fremantle in Western Australia to Kingston and Arthur’s Vale on Norfolk Island in the east; and from areas around Sydney in New South Wales in the north, to sites located in Tasmania in the south.

Eating & Drinking
Australians love their food and this nation is built on a strong history of migration so it’s no wonder that we’ve become famous to the culinary world for our ‘fusion’ food. English and northern European cooking styles have been a part of Australian food since colonisation. Then in the 1970s many Asian cuisines including Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese and Indian began to influence the Australian food landscape, as well as the many southern European and Middle Eastern influences such as Spanish, Balkan, Hungarian, Turkish and Lebanese.
Australians are the second largest beer drinkers in the world! Our beer is essentially a cold lager with a strength of around 5 per cent and the list of breweries is endless, including Tooheys, Carlton Draught, Coopers, Boags, Cascade (which is also the oldest that’s still operating), Hahn, James Squire, Victoria Bitter, Emu Export and Little Creatures.
With many great wine regions on the doorsteps of Australia’s largest capital cities, the international reputation of Australian wine has never been greater, currently being the fourth largest exporter of wine worldwide at around 750 million litres per year.
Health & Safety
Generally speaking, Australia is safe to travel in, though always exercise common sense while travelling.

Electrical Supply
Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. The electricity supply in Australia runs at 230V and 50Hz. Australia uses the Type I electric plug, so make sure you have the right travel adaptor with you.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole program!
Nick Mooney is an excellent leader. His knowledge in so many areas is extensive. It became obvious when meeting other local people that he is regarded very highly. As with Trevor, our driver, nothing was too much trouble for him when trying to make our trip memorable. 10 out of 10.

Best time to visit australia.
Being such a large place, Australia has a wide range of climates, so all year round, there is somewhere great to visit.
Summer (December to February) can get very hot but is perfect for beach-going and other outdoor activities. In the far north, it is also the wet season, which can get quite humid, and some beaches may be closed due to jellyfish or 'stingers'.
Winter (June to August) is pleasant and dry in the north but can get quite cold in the south, especially in Tasmania and Victoria, where snowfall is common.
Spring and autumn are great times to visit Australia as the weather is milder but still warm enough for swimming in northern areas.
Regardless of daytime temperatures, nights can get very cold in the desert areas of Central and Western Australia, so prepare accordingly.
The main school holiday period is from Christmas to late January and is considered the peak travel time within Australia; expect popular tourist spots to be crowded during this time.

Geography and environment
The continent of Australia is known for being one of the flattest, hottest and driest places on earth, but despite this, there is an astounding variety of terrains and environments on this island nation. While large areas of Australia are covered in desert, there are also tropical rainforests, alpine snowfields, dense bushland, beaches, gorges, lakes, and rivers to be found.
Australia’s national parks are home to many species of birds and mammals not found in the wild anywhere else in the world, including kangaroos, koalas, wallabies and wombats.
Boasting many stunning white sand beaches, Australia has a coastline like none other. From busy Bondi to surfing icons like Bell’s Beach and Tasmania’s stunning Wineglass Bay, there are endless places to swim, surf, snorkel and paddle.
Despite Australia’s large landmass, most people tend to live in urban, coastal cities. Faster-paced cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne hold much of the population, as do regional satellite cities such as Albury, Dubbo, Bunbury, Townsville, Newcastle and Geelong.
Outback towns have a unique flavour and a distinct way of life; things are slower here and due to smaller populations, space is plentiful, with most locals relying on agriculture for a living. Venturing away from the city to visit the Outback and rural areas of Australia is highly recommended as it gives travellers the chance to see a different side of Australia.
Culture and customs
With a strong history of immigration, modern Australia is made up of people from many different cultural backgrounds. This mix makes Australia an endlessly fascinating place to visit as travellers will be exposed to a variety of different customs and cultures during their stay. From the ancient, spiritual ways of the First Nations population to the wide array of faiths, foods and festivals on display in the big cities, Australia is a cultural melting pot.
Despite the differences, there are many things that unify the people of Australia. Sports, in particular cricket, soccer and football (Australian Rules), are played and watched by the masses, irrespective of age, race, gender or income. Large sporting events like the AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup Day and the Boxing Day Cricket Test have universal appeal for Australians.
Australians relish public holidays, with national and state holidays offering locals time to relax with friends and family over a barbecue or picnic. Making use of Australia’s natural environment is also paramount during this time, with outdoor activities like bushwalking, swimming at the beach or lazing in the park popular with locals.
Eating and drinking
Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.
Australia is a land that has been built by immigrants, and these multicultural influences are evident in the wide array of food available. Head to the Outback, and you’ll find authentic ' bush tucker ', simple campfire meals and sizzling barbecues.

What's the transport like in Australia?
Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Australia, you may even find yourself travelling overland.
Overland tours
Australia is a big place – like, huge. Overland tours involve a lot of time on the road covering long distances, and sometimes the landscape can be pretty barren, so bring a book or some tunes to keep you company.
What's the accommodation like in Australia?
Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.
When travelling with us in Australia, you may find yourself staying in a:
Our lodge accommodation is boutique and nature-focused, often located at the entrance of a national park and has amenities like a restaurant or dining room on-site.
Lodges are comfortable places to stay and offer a good night's rest after a day spent exploring Australia's natural beauty.
Permanent tented campsite
There's no need to put up your tent when you spend the night in a permanent tented campsite. You'll have a roof over your head and will bunk down on sleeper mats on the ground or camp beds, with access to a toilet/shower block. Tent sizes can vary depending on the trip you're on and the location you're visiting. Some of our permanent tented campsites are a little bit fancy, others are very simple. Unless you have booked a single supplement, you will be sharing a tent with another member of your group.
Our bush camping experiences are as diverse as Australia itself. Some trips offer swag camping under the twinkling stars, or you could be sleeping in a tent with access to simple toilet or shower amenities.
Some sites may not have access to a shower. However, the scenery at these magical spots makes it worth going without a bath for a day or so.
For bush camping and tented campsites, a pillow, pillowcase, bottom sheet and a swag/canvas bed roll are provided. While you're encouraged to bring your own sleeping bag, you can rent one as well.
Sometimes, a trip involves participatory camping, where everyone pitches in to help. Other times, a staff member is on hand to take care of things like cooking.
We provide accommodation at a variety of hotels around Australia. Some are rather upmarket, others are more basic, but all offer comfortable stays and ensuite facilities.
On some trips, we stay in hostels, which means your bed could be in a twin room or a shared dorm room. Some of these rooms have their own facilities, while others share facilities.
How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Below, we have all the info on how to watch Tour de France Femmes 2024 from anywhere in the world with details on worldwide TV channels, broadcasters and free streams.
The Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift is the women's version of the Tour de France, revamped and returned to the calendar as of two years ago, and anticipation is high after two thrillers in the past two editions. The race spans eight stages and seven days, with a foreign start in the Netherlands and a set-piece final-day showdown on the famous hairpins of Alpe d'Huez, perhaps cycling's most famous mountain. Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx-Protime), the 2023 champion, is the favourite to defend the yellow jersey but will have to fend off the likes of last year’s podium finisher Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM).
The race kicked off on August 12 with a bunch sprint won by the Dutchwoman Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenic-PostNL), who pulled on the famous yellow jersey as the first overall leader of the race. The race continues with not one but two stages on August 13, stage 2 being a short mass-start road stage running 67.9km from Dordrecht to Rotterdam, likely to feature another bunch sprint, and stage 3 being a short individual time trial in Rotterdam. Although only 6.3km long, and flat, it’s has the potential to open gaps between the main contenders, making it an important juncture in the overall shape of the race.

Things go A-Rai at Wyndham, as Englishman rallies for first TOUR title
Change Text Size
“If I'm around in those situations, I'll always congratulate the winner,” Rai explained. “It's an amazing achievement and everyone has such a special journey to be playing on the PGA TOUR. When it culminates in a victory, it's incredibly special.”
And Rai found out firsthand how good it feels on Sunday after a final-round 64 that boosted him to his first PGA TOUR victory at the Wyndham Championship.
Billy Horschel was playing with Rai in the penultimate group over the final 36 holes on the marathon of a Sunday at Sedgefield Country Club. The two have become good friends since the Englishman moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, at the beginning of last year.
Horschel was watching those scoreboards that Rai tried to avoid seeing and knew a four-shot deficit had turned into a one-stroke lead as the two stepped to the 18th tee as the shadows lengthened. Did he want to know where he stood, Horschel asked, and Rai indicated he didn’t. So, he just told his buddy to stay strong.
Rai admitted that 30 seconds later, he turned to his caddie and was told to just concentrate on playing a good hole. “He knows me pretty well,” Rai said. And when Rai drained that 8-foot birdie putt to seal the victory, Horschel was there on the sidelines pumping his fist and then wrapped him in a bear hug.
“He was very encouraging to me walking down that hole, which was extremely nice of him, just being extremely positive,” said Rai, as he sat beside the gleaming silver Sam Snead Trophy. “It shows how class of an act he truly is. … It was great to share that with him.
“And even in the score recording afterwards when I was told that we had won again, I felt really emotional, and it was really nice to share that moment with him.”
Aaron Rai's news conference after winning Wyndham Championship
Rai’s “special journey” was complete.
Rai, who is of Indian descent, grew up in Wolverhampton, England, and has been playing golf since he was about 5 years old. He says he actually came to the game “by mistake.” Rai’s father Amrik was an accomplished tennis player and tried to get the youngster to take up his game. But his forehand looked more like a golf swing, and so, the switch was made.
Rai’s dream of becoming a Formula 1 driver went by the wayside, as well, although he often wore Ferrari shirts and jackets when he played junior golf to honor his favorite driver, Michael Schumacher. As a teenager, he once made 207 10-foot putts in a row as part of an advertising campaign for a training aid – easily eclipsing the mark of 136. For the record, it took him about 90 minutes.
“I probably wouldn’t be able to make 207 in a row now,” Rai said. “That was when I was 15, so that's quite a long time ago now.”
Rai came up through the ranks in Europe, winning three times on the Challenge Tour and twice on the DP World Tour. He’s now a PGA TOUR champion in his 89th start and will open the FedExCup Playoffs ranked 25th with a good chance of reaching the TOUR Championship at East Lake.
Rai’s rise this year should come as no surprise. The 29-year-old ranks fourth in Strokes Gained: Total, eighth in Approach, 10th in Tee to Green and third in Driving Accuracy this year. He’s had six top-10 finishes this year and four have come in his last five starts.
Aaron Rai’s Round 4 winning highlights from Wyndham Championship
Rai credits the work he’s done with John Graham on his putting over the last few months as one of the keys. His dad has helped him visualize those putts better, as well. His short game has improved, his bunker play in particular.
“It just feels like a real steady progression this year and another layer of kind of consistency from the last year and the previous year,” Rai said.
The win will be a popular one among his peers. Within minutes of the conclusion, Matt Fitzpatrick had posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Not many nicer guys out on tour than Aaron Rai. So pleased for him.” Fitzpatrick also noticed Horschel’s class act: "Also (Horschel) willing him on down the last few holes! Top stuff!"
As for Rai, he was still letting the win sink in Sunday night. He planned to call his family and try to get some rest because he had a 5:30 a.m. flight to Memphis on Monday morning where he will play in the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
“I haven't really had much chance to think about that,” Rai said. “I think just that statement alone of being a PGA TOUR winner is truly a dream come true. To win on any professional golf tour is an incredible accomplishment.
“The PGA TOUR is the pinnacle of golf and it's amazing to be competing here week in, week out, but to have won a tournament is extremely special and something I'll always remember.”
