What people love about 2 week france, italy and switzerland tours.

It was very good. The tour guides were awesome
I was initially skeptical -- too many bad reviews for tour operators these days -- but I was pleasantly surprised how good the trip turned out to be. As arranged, I had a pick up at Heathrow who dropped me to the hotel. Throughout the 14-day trip, hotel stay was nice and pleasant with free breakfasts. The hotels in Lyon and Zurich were especially good. Not all tour guides were fluent with English, but Fernando (London) and Thiery (Italy) and 'Disaster Phillipe' were great. Some of the outstanding trips were 1) cruise on Seine 2) train ride on Zurich metro 3) train ride down Grindelweld. On top, the many funicular rides and boat rides were well-planned and enjoyable.
The small group tour was amazing loved the gourmet Italy tour. The tour director made it extra special she was so informative.

Arrival in Chamonix; Trip Briefing & Welcome Dinner

We meet at our mountain hotel in Chamonix, France, a pretty village nestled under the flanks of snow-covered Mont Blanc (15,770'), the highest mountain in western Europe. Chamonix is the 'mountaineering capital' of Europe, and has been a climbing and skiing center for more than 100 years. This wonderful town has a charming atmosphere and is well-preserved with cobbled streets full of lively sidewalk cafés. This evening, we have a trip briefing and welcome dinner.

Accommodations

Hôtel Prieuré

Hôtel Prieuré Chamonix-Mont Blanc, France

The Prieuré is a Savoyarde style chalet hotel with great balcony views of the Mont Blanc massif and Aiguilles Rouges, known for their local charm, service, and spa with sauna, hot tub and steam room.

  • Activity Overview: Hiking
  • Activity Level: Moderate with 1,700' elevation gain and loss
  • Activity Length: 4-5 hours (about 6 miles)

Today we join our guide for an introductory hike up to the Aiguilles Rouges, with Lac Blanc as our destination. As we hike along the Grand Balcony trail, we get a dazzling view of many of the highest peaks in the Alps, with spectacular vistas over the entire Chamonix Valley and the massif, which we will hike around in the week ahead. We then return by cable car from La Flégère, or continue hiking along the Grand Balcony to the cable car station at Planpraz. You are free to enjoy local fare this evening in one of Chamonix's many wonderful Savoyard (regional) restaurants.

Les Houches to Les Contamines-Montjoie

  • Activity Level: Strenuous; elevation gain of 2,400’ and loss of 4,400’
  • Activity Length: 5-6 hours (approximately 8 miles)

The Mont Blanc circuit starts a few miles outside of Chamonix at the village of Les Houches, where we take a cable car up to Bellevue. The hiking begins here, with fantastic views of the Chamonix Valley's peaks and surroundings. We first hike along the foot of the huge Glacier de Bionnassay, and then up to the Col de Tricot (6,955'), with sight of the Dômes de Miage. A steep descent brings us to the Chalets de Miage, where we enjoy a picnic lunch with the beauty of the Alps around us.

Following lunch, we climb up the hill known as Truc, and then descend through a lovely forest to the charming resort village of Les Contamines-Montjoie, once a town of chamois hunters and smugglers, and today a popular mountaineering and ski area.

Tonight there is time to explore the town, relax, and refuel for the next stage of our journey.

Hotel La Chemenaz

Hotel La Chemenaz Les Contamines-Montjoie, France

The Chemenaz is located in the small bustling resort town of Contamines les Montjoie. The hotel offers beautiful views of the "Domes de Miages" to the south of Mont Blanc, comfortable accommodations, and fine alpine hospitality. Relax after after the day’s hike in the swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi. Enjoy regional Savoyard specialties in their restaurant La Trabla.

Les Contamines-Montjoie to Les Chapieux

  • Activity Level: Strenuous; elevation gain of 4,400’ and loss of 3,200’
  • Activity Length: 7-8 hours (approximately 10 miles)

In the morning we make our way to the end of the valley and our trailhead at the pilgrimage chapel of Notre Dame de la Gorge—a church of unique Baroque architecture. From the church we walk along an old Roman road that climbs steadily through a beautiful forest, broad alpine pastures, and passes rustic chalets as we make our way to the Col du Bonhomme (7,600'), our first pass. After lunch at the Col du Bonhomme, a short, gradual uphill traverse takes us across Col de la Croix-du-Bonhomme (8,200'), with superb vistas overlooking the Tarantaise region.

After a brief rest, we have a long and sometimes steep descent through rich, open pastures to the remote summer village of Les Chapieux (5,200'). A brief twenty-minute transfer will take us to our truly authentic Savoie hotel for tonight's stay. This evening, we enjoy a fine regional dinner at a charming, local restaurant.

Note: Today is one of the longest and most strenuous days on the Tour du Mont Blanc, as we cross two mountain passes, the Col du Bonhomme (7,600'), and the Col de la Croix-du-Bonhomme (8,200').

Hotel L’Autantic

Hotel L’Autantic Bourg Saint Maurice, France

A beautiful stone lodge located in the small mountain resort town of Bourg St. Maurice. Located in a tranquil setting with a beautiful courtyard and garden, L’Autantic is a short walk from town, offering mountain views, pool and sauna, and authentic Savoie style and hospitality. A bountiful breakfast is served in the welcoming veranda, overlooking the eastern side of the Mont Blanc massif.

Bourg St. Maurice to Courmayeur

  • Activity Level: Moderate to strenuous; elevation gain of 1,600’ gain and loss of 3,600’
  • Activity Length: 4-5 hours (approximately 8.5 miles)

We begin our day with a short transfer to the end of the Vallée des Glaciers. Leaving France, we hike into the Aosta region of Italy via grassy trails and ancient passages.

We climb eastward and enjoy a relatively easy hike over the Col de la Seigne (8,245').  The views are dramatic from the pass, encompassing the Aiguille Noire and the Italian face of Mont Blanc that dominates the Val Veni.

An easy descent brings us farther into Italy, and from the very first mountain refuge we pass, the cultural difference between France and Italy is striking. At the end of our day of hiking, we transfer to Courmayeur where we spend the remainder of the day exploring this resort town spectacularly settled beneath the Grand Jorasses and the Brenva Glacier. You are free to enjoy dinner this evening at one of Courmayeur's many fine restaurants.

Hotel Berthod

Hotel Berthod Courmayeur, Italy

Hotel Berthod is a converted old country house in an ideal location in the center of lively Courmayeur, the "Italian Chamonix". The Berthod family who has operated the hotel for many years, embraces all guests with a gracious welcome and service. Balconies offer impressive views of Mont Blanc, and many shops and cafes are just a few steps away to immerse yourself in Italian culture for the evening.

Mont de la Saxe to Refugios

  • Activity Level: Moderate to strenuous with about 1000’ elevation gain and up to 3000’ loss with several options
  • Activity Length: 4-6 hours (6-10 miles)

Today, we experience the Tour du Mont Blanc route above Courmayeur overlooking the Val Ferret. We enjoy the stunning landscape of the massif from the Italian side, which is more dramatic and rugged than the French side. The peaks are closer allowing great views of the Dent du Géant, Grandes Jorasses, and others.

We take a local bus up the valley to start our hike along the ridge of Mont de la Saxe, where we have panoramic views along the way to Refugio Bonatti. We parallel the full mountain range and its steep and impressive south faces. After a lunch break, we continue our hike along the footsteps of the famous Ultra Trail of Mont Blanc and to Refuge Bertone before descending back to the valley to return to Courmayeur for some time to explore this charming town.

You may also choose to relax at our hotel's new spa before dinner on your own: soak in the hot tub or warm your muscles in the steam room or sauna.

Courmayeur–Champex

  • Activity Level: Moderate to strenuous with 2,450’ elevation gain and 2,750’ loss
  • Activity Length: 5-6 hours (about 9 miles)

After a short transfer from Courmayeur, we hike from Italy into the mountain wonderland of Switzerland via the Grand Col Ferret (8,400'), and pass beneath the massive granite peaks of Mont Dolent, the Dent du Geant, and the Grandes Jorasses. We hike through alpine meadows and past fast-flowing mountain streams on our moderate but spectacular climb towards the pass, enjoying amazing views of the icy southern flanks of the Mont Blanc massif.

The Grand Col Ferret has been in use for several centuries and serves as the Italian-Swiss border between Val D'Aosta and the canton of Valais. The landscape in the Swiss Val Ferret is gentler, with enticing streams and woodlands, and an extraordinary abundance of wildflowers.

Our arrival in Switzerland is greeted by the sound of Swiss cow bells, and rustic chalets with geraniums spilling from window boxes. We descend to the village of Ferret, and transfer to the mountain-ringed lake resort of Champex. There is time to relax before dinner at our comfortable hotel.

Hotel du Glacier

Hotel du Glacier Champex, Switzerland

Hotel du Glacier is a family-run hotel ideally situated on Lake Champex, reflecting views of the surrounding mountains. Swiss flags and cows with ringing bells in the surrounding area will welcome you in Switzerland. The hotel offers a billiards lounge and opportunity to relax in the or hot tub after a full day’s hike. Experience the local culture in the small village, a short walk away, before savouring a regional Swiss dinner.

Trient to Le Tour

  • Activity Level: Moderate to challenging; elevation gain of 3,050’ and loss of 3,000’
  • Activity Length: 5-6 hours (approximately 9 miles)

Today, we complete the Tour du Mont Blanc circuit on one of its most beautiful stages. After a transfer to the village of Trient at the base of a spectacular glacier, we hike through high pastures and back into France over the Col du Balme (7,230'), with glorious views of Mont Blanc and the Chamonix Valley below. We have lunch at the pass, enjoying the sweeping views over the massif we've circumnavigated, and then descend by foot or gondola to the village of Le Tour, from which we head back to Chamonix. We gather to celebrate our accomplishments tonight with a farewell dinner at one of the best restaurants in Chamonix.

Departure from Chamonix

Our trip ends after breakfast, and you are free to continue your exploration of Chamonix, or depart for your next destination.

Please note that this is a typical itinerary, and actual activities may vary due to weather conditions, local events, and to allow serendipity to play a hand in your experience. Accommodations are as outlined in the itinerary, although we reserve the right to change these or the order visited should the need arise.

What To Expect

Physical activity.

Boundless Journeys' trips are designed for energetic and flexible individuals who like to be active and have a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude. As one of our most challenging tours, Tour du Mont Blanc Hiking is rated 4, strenuous, on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the most strenuous). As this classic route completely encircles the Mont Blanc massif, we trek full days through spectacular mountainous terrain, "inn-to-inn" every day (except for our first hike on Day 2). Each rewarding day includes long elevation gains and losses ranging from 1,700 to 4,400 feet; hiking duration ranging from five to eight hours, and mileage ranging from seven to twelve miles. Most hiking is at altitudes between 5,000 and 8,000 feet, and the maximum elevation reached is 8,800 feet.

Although our luggage is transported each day, the hikes have no vehicle access (other than the start and finish), with no shorter options. All trip members should be in strong physical condition and have good hiking experience. No technical climbing experience is necessary. (Limited passenger seats are available in the luggage vehicle in the event a transfer is needed.) We encourage you to call our office for further information to help determine if this trip is right for you.

Trail conditions vary greatly, including a mix of wide dirt paths, hiking trails with rocks and roots, rough, large rocky steps, loose scree, and shallow stream crossings. Uneven terrain underfoot requires agility and stable footing. We request that you bring hiking boots with full ankle support and two trekking poles, which help provide comfort, stability, and most importantly, enjoyment. Our hikes take us through farmland, forest, rocky glacial terrain, and over mountain passes. Each hike includes sustained climbing and descending, sometimes steeply. The route does not travel through exposed sections with drop-offs, but does include limited sections of trail traversing steep hillsides, which may pose an issue for those with vertigo or a fear of heights. Feel free to call our office for further details.

Meeting Point

Chamonix, France

Departure Point

Traveling to and from.

Most Convenient Airport: Geneva International Airport; Geneva, Switzerland (airport code GVA)

Meeting Time and Place: Your guide(s) will meet you in the evening on the first day of the trip, in the lobby of our hotel in Chamonix.

Departure Time and Place: Chamonix, France, after breakfast on the last day of the trip. Please note that transfers to the Geneva International Airport take approximately 1.5 hours. Please plan your flight schedule accordingly.

In an alpine environment, weather is variable throughout the day and by elevation. A warm, sunny day in the valley can be anywhere from delightfully refreshing to downright brisk at higher elevations. Therefore, dressing in layers will be essential to your comfort throughout the day. Rain and snow are possible at any time, and weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, so having rain gear and thermal layers on hand is advisable. At the same time, the sun is strong at higher elevations, and therefore adequate precautions should be taken to prevent sunburn, even on cool days.

You may obtain more detailed weather information by visiting www.weatherbase.com.

Savoyard cuisine is centered around the incredible bounty of fresh foods available in the Alpine valleys of the region. You'll enjoy plenty of local cheeses and wines and most menus will feature soups, pasta, fish, meat, and salads. Breakfasts, lunches, and all but two dinners are included; your guide can make recommendations for wonderful local restaurants for those two evenings. Breakfasts include fresh fruit, sliced meats and cheese, yogurt, cereal, and pastries. Picnic lunches usually include fresh fruits and vegetables, cured meats, fresh bread, 2 or 3 local cheeses, and cookies or chocolate for dessert. Most dinners are at our hotels and consist of a good variety of Savoyard choices. Vegetarians can be accommodated with advance notice, though choices tend to be more limited.

A Note on Accommodations

The hotels we stay in are rustic, well-located for hikers, and busy in the summer season. Please note that these are hikers' hotels, not five-star resorts. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but are not always of uniform size, and amenities can vary. Although offering excellent service, the Hotel La Grande Ourse offers shared dormitory-style bathrooms (no private baths) and limited single rooms. Those who reserve a single room may be matched with another guest (of the same gender).

Switzerland flag

  • "I didn't have to plan the details (i.e., transportation, hotels). Since planning/managing is what I do for a living, it was great to have someone else cover everything. The trip was seamless." - Amy H.
  • "I loved my trek! Oh let me count the ways! 1. The scenery - jaw dropping, awe inspiring, words cannot describe the scenery. 2. It was challenging, but not too hard. 3. You mostly climbed up in the mornings and descended or had it easier most afternoons. 4. The camaraderie with the other hikers doing the TMB." - Donna B.
  • "The narrative description was a constant source of amusement since it was so well-written with a whimsical and playful tone, yet very very accurate and helpful. We were surprised with how often we referred back to the narrative versus the map. Whoever wrote it gets five stars! And a bonus!!! You seemed the most organized, well-represented online, fair in your pricing, professional. Brittany was exceptional and winning in her confidence and non-salesy tone on the phone. I sensed we would get exactly what we paid for with you all." - Ken G.
  • "My wife and I really enjoy hiking and have been doing Ryder Walker (RW) treks for over a decade now and chose this RW trek to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary. As such, RW probably gave us some upgrades, but the accommodations were some of the best we have ever experienced anywhere, let alone a "hiking vacation." If there was a best room in the house or you should be on this side to get the best of this-or-that, RW had you there. " - Bill Y.
  • "Oh Wow!! I pretty much loved everything! First, and most importantly, Dave and Eileen (guides) were AMAZING!!! Cheerful, generous, knowledgeable, helpful, wise, fun, fun and FUN!!!" - Darcy P.
  • "The scenery and walking were amazing. We loved walking through three different countries. Every stop along the way was beautiful--whether a picnic or a stop at a refuge for cafe or lunch--it was more lovely than could be imagined. The trails surrounded by flowers and the views of the mountains were stunning. We loved meeting people on the trails and greeting them. It was a good challenge in terms of walking, and the views, the scenery were simply spectacular." - Ann Marie Lipinsky
  • "I, personally, love the group experience and it was terrific having young people in the group, as they added such great energy and were so much fun to be with. I so enjoyed conversations with them on the trails. I love the way in which Kenny, who's so comfortable speaking three languages, so easily mingles with locals, wherever we were. It made the experience so much more culturally rewarding. I ended this trip on such a high that I promised myself that I would make sure that someday my children and grandchildren might also have this experience!" - Ann Fay Lawton
  • "This tour was my first guided tour and the highlight in my hiking career! Willi Glanznig, the best guide and a wonderful person, made everything to make this tour perfect. We had great hikes, a lot of fun, the perfect weather and last but not least, Willi and I could speak in our own dialect, which helped me a lot! It was interesting to see different places, atmospheres, accommodations and good food in such a short time. Every place had its own charm and very friendly people. Thank you for such a nice experience." - Doris Kahry
  • "The hiking was challenging, the food incredible, and the accommodations top-notch (even the hut night)! We feel really good about and totally satisfied with another fine Ryder-Walker experience and those wonderful memories will last forever! We’re already trying to figure out our next Ryder-Walker Adventure." - Bill Yeast and Elizabeth Dinsel
  • "I can’t think of how this tour could be improved on. Every aspect was near perfect for us thanks to your logistics team and guides." - Morgan S.

How Long to Spend in Italy, Switzerland, and France (with 3 Itinerary Ideas)

A combo tour through Italy, Switzerland, and France is a good choice to immerse yourself in the rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cultures of Europe. From Italy's historied cities to Switzerland's majestic Alps and France's iconic landmarks, this destination trio promises a diverse and unforgettable adventure. Our guide will provide you with some ideas for a travel itinerary to explore the magic of these renowned European destinations.

Content Preview

  • 1. How Long to Spend
  • 2. 14 Days in Italy, Switzerland, and France
  • 3. 3 Weeks in Italy, Switzerland, and France
  • 4. 10 Days in Italy, Switzerland, and France

1. How Many Days to Spend in Italy, Switzerland, and France

If you are visiting these three countries for the first time and want a comprehensive experience exploring Italy, Switzerland, and France, we recommend setting aside a minimum of 14 days. If you are keen on history and the arts, consider spending more time exploring Italy. For nature enthusiasts, Switzerland offers breathtaking beauty, making it worth staying there longer. To experience France's highlights, we suggest allotting at least 3 days to explore Paris.

To delve deeper into these three captivating destinations, you may want to consider extending your trip to 3 weeks. This extended duration provides ample time to explore a wider array of cities and attractions within each location. By allocating 2–3 days in each city, you could immerse yourself in the local culture and historical significance.

If you're short on time and seeking a fast-paced travel experience, you may want to consider an itinerary of 10 to 12 days focusing on visiting key cities, such as Rome, Venice, Zurich, Lucerne, and Paris. Dedicate 1–2 days to each city to ensure that you fully immerse yourself in the highlights of each destination and optimize your travel experience.

2. Top Suggestion: 2 Weeks in Italy, Switzerland, and France

For a 2-week tour, we recommend that you spend 6 days in Italy, 4 days in Switzerland, and 4 days in France. As 14 days are not enough to cover most of the tourist cities in the three countries, we recommend that you spend more days in Italy because Italy has a richer history and a more extensive range of tourist attractions. If you are drawn to Switzerland's natural beauty or captivated by France's romantic culture, you could choose to spend more time in your preferred destination. Here is a sample 2-week itinerary:

  • Days 1–6: Rome and Venice (Italy)
  • Days 7–10: Lucerne, Interlaken, and Zurich (Switzerland)
  • Days 11–14: Paris and Lyon (France)

If you are traveling to Italy with kids, Rome and Venice should be at the top of your list. This is because both cities offer an array of kid-friendly activities and delicious cuisine.

Start your journey in Rome with a private guide at the Colosseum, where you could seamlessly explore its historical marvels, such as the Arch of Constantine, Palatine Hill, and the Roman Forum.

Then, extend your itinerary to Venice for more family fun. Watch your little ones immerse themselves in the enchanting Piazza San Marco and enjoy the enchanting experience of a gondola ride on the iconic Grand Canal. To elevate your adventure, embark on a 4-hour island-hopping expedition across the Venetian Lagoon, discovering the unique charms of Murano, Burano, and Torcello along the way.

In Switzerland, you would visit the top cities — Interlaken, Zurich, and Lucerne, which offer enchanting experiences. In Zurich, stroll through the historic Old Town, visit the Swiss National Museum, and enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Zurich for stunning views. In Lucerne, explore landmarks like the Chapel Bridge and Water Tower. Ascend Mount Pilatus on the steepest cogwheel railway or take a cable-car ride for amazing mountain vistas.

In Interlaken, which is nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, you could indulge in thrilling adventure activities, such as paragliding, skydiving, bungee jumping, and canyoning. Take a scenic cogwheel train from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch, Europe's highest railway station, and enjoy sweeping views of the majestic Swiss Alps.

In France, you would visit the highlights of Paris and Lyon in 4 days. Begin your Paris journey with a scenic Seine cruise offering breathtaking views near the Eiffel Tower. Immerse yourself in Paris's vibrant art scene with visits to renowned attractions, such as the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, and Centre Pompidou. For another memorable day, take a delightful trip to Versailles for a chateau and gardens tour with your expert local guide.

In Lyon, you could visit many family-friendly attractions, such as Mini World Lyon — a captivating miniature park, and Tête d'Or Park — a bustling urban oasis featuring a zoo and botanical garden, ensuring delightful experiences for everyone. Lyon is also a culinary delight for your family journey. Known for its rich gastronomic traditions and top-tier dining options, Lyon offers a flavorful adventure for all ages.

3. In-Depth Idea: 3 Weeks in Italy, Switzerland, and France

If you have 3 weeks, you could fully immerse yourself in each country. By dedicating a week to each destination, you could delve deeper into their distinct cultures and histories, and savor authentic local cuisines.

Here is an example of a 3-week tour itinerary:

  • Days 1–7 in Italy: Rome, Florence, and Milan
  • Days 8–14 in Switzerland: Zermatt, Interlaken, Lucerne, and Zurich
  • Days 15–21 in France: Paris and Provence

For a week In Italy, we recommend that you visit the top three cities, — Rome, Florence, and Milan — from the south to the north.

In Rome, experience the mesmerizing Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. Explore the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.

Then, catch a train to Florence to marvel at iconic landmarks and art galleries with skip-the-line access. Indulge in a 3-hour food tour, savoring Tuscan delights.

Head to the north to discover Milan's grandeur on a day tour featuring the Duomo and Sforza Castle. Gain exclusive access to see Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, and stroll through the stunning Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

In Switzerland, extend your trip by adding Zermatt to your 1-week trip. Explore the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and the Klein Matterhorn with stops at Furi, Schwarzsee, and Trockener Steg for stunning views of the Matterhorn. Take a train to the Gornergrat and maybe a short hike to Riffelberg. Enjoy panoramic views of the Matterhorn from a terrace near the train station.

Take a cable car to Mürren from Lauterbrunnen for breathtaking vistas of the Bernese Alps. Travel to Jungfraujoch for a high-altitude experience with a 360° view at the Sphinx Observatory.

With a week in France, besides visiting Paris as in the above itinerary, we recommend that you extend your trip to Provence.  Travel swiftly from Paris to Provence on a 3½-hour TGV train ride, arriving in Aix-en-Provence, a town steeped in heritage and inspiration for renowned artists like Cézanne. Explore historic sites, quaint lanes, and local flavors, then venture to Avignon for a glimpse into its medieval past. Wrap up your adventure with a leisurely day in Aix-en-Provence, visiting notable landmarks and savoring farm-to-table cuisine.

4. Essential Touring: Italy, Switzerland, and France in 10 Days

If you are a fast-paced traveler with a limited time of 10 days, you could still explore some of the top sites in Italy, Switzerland, and France. Here is an example of a 10-day itinerary:

  • Days 1–4: Rome and Florence (Italy)
  • Days 5–7: Zurich and Lucerne (Switzerland)
  • Days 8–10: Paris (France)

In Italy, you would have a delightful tour for 4 days, delving into the treasures of Rome and Florence. Start in Rome, where a private guide would unlock the mysteries of the Colosseum, leading you through its ancient battles and nearby landmarks like the Arch of Constantine and Palatine Hill.

Then, travel to Florence, and take in the grandeur of Piazza della Signoria and its iconic Palazzo Vecchio. Take in the beauty of Piazza del Duomo and its architectural splendors before immersing yourself in art at the renowned Uffizi Gallery, home to masterpieces by Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Raphael. In Switzerland, you would visit the top two cities, Zurich and Lucerne.

Explore Zurich by wandering through the charming Old Town, discovering the Swiss National Museum, and cruising on Lake Zurich for picturesque scenery. In Lucerne, visit iconic sites, such as the Chapel Bridge and Water Tower. Reach the top of Mount Pilatus using the steep cogwheel railway or a cable car ride to experience breathtaking mountain panoramas.

In France, to ensure a comfortable and relaxing end to your trip, we suggest visiting Paris exclusively. Immerse yourself in the vibrant art scene of the city by exploring renowned attractions, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, and Centre Pompidou.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, milan – arrive in the vibrant and chic italian city for an introductory tour.

Milan has a reputation for its fashion and its nightclubs, both always on the cutting edge of their distinct worlds. The splendor of the city runs much deeper than just chic garments and enthusiastic beats, as encapsulated by the remarkable architecture and stunning art museums found all around the city. You will land at Malpensa Airport where your private transfer meets you and settle you into your luxurious hotel near the heart of the city.  With a view of the spectacular Gothic façade of the Cathedral of Santa Maira Nascente, your guide will meet you in the lobby and escort you through the city to explore the history and beauty of Milan that visitors to Italy often overlook.

The Cathedral was erected in the 14th-century but was not complete until the 19th-century under the rule of Napoleon. 135 stone pinnacles top the façade with more than 2,200 marble statues that glint in the sunlight. 15th and 16th-century stained glass windows line the walls of the nave. The tomb of Gian Giacomo Medici was erected in the 16th-century and contains black marble statues that stand beside ornate pillars. The luxury shops and cafes of along the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II frame the Piazza del Duomo. The gallery was erected in the 19th-century and remains the largest shopping arcade in Europe, with a dome rising nearly 160 feet above the mosaic floor.

What's Included:

Milan – Explore the Grandeur In and Around Italy’s Second Largest City

In the morning, your guide will meet you at the hotel and lead you to a brick Gothic church known as Santa Maria delle Grazie. The structure was erected in the 15th-century with a gigantic six-sided dome. The interior contains an aroma of myrrh as old sgraffito paintings decorate the dome. An altarpiece depicts the Madonna as your guide leads you through the nave and into the adjoining refectory, home to Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper .

The painting encompasses an entire wall of the refectory that depicts Jesus’s last meal with His disciples. Da Vinci rendered each person with realistic detail to turn an often-rendered scene into a dramatic interpretation. The figure of Judas stands small and dark as he reaches his hand forward towards the bread on the table. The windows and figures are grouped in threes, utilizing the mystical number with human characteristics. Outside of the chapel, venture back to Medieval Milan at Piazza dei Mercanti, where the old town hall from the 13th-century hides beneath the towering figures of the city’s high-rise buildings.

Stresa – Discover the Charm of the Borromeo Islands in Lake Maggiore

In the morning, the city returns to its active form as locals board the metro to work, and shops turn on the lights over their fabulous window displays. After breakfast, your private transfer will meet you at the hotel and escort you north into the mountains with a stop along the flower-lined promenades and cobalt blue waters of Lake Maggiore. The lake is the largest of Italy’s northern body’s of water with a surface area of 82 square miles. The 13th-century monastery of Santa Caterina del Sasso clings to the craggy, tall face of the southeast shore. The aroma of exotic flowers blends with the Mediterranean palms as the sunlight glistens off the surface water.

You will board a small boat and venture to Isola Bella, one of three Borromean Islands, and home to the stunning 17th-century villa in which Count Vitaliano Borromeo resided. Napoleon and wife Josephine stayed at the palace in the late 18th-century, along with Prince Charles and Princess Diana in the 1980s. The gardens contain more than ten terraces that climb up and down the hillside that frames the Baroque palace façade. In the summer, the family that owns the villa resides in the second and third stories and allow you to wander through the first floor. The ceiling in the Salone Grande rises to 75 feet tall and contains a 200-year old wooden model depicting the island and the villa. The Picture Gallery has preserved paintings by master artists, including Titian and Jose Ribera.

Lucerne – Full Day Tour of the Medieval Splendors of Lucerne, Switzerland

The bright colors of the blossoming flowers across Stresa and the Borromeo Islands reflect in the calm water of Lake Maggiore. The Monte Mattarone Cable Car ferries people to the peak of Monte Mattarone at 4,891 feet above sea level to provide a spectacular view of the Borromeo Islands and an easy connection to the Alpine Gardens, which contain more than 2,000 species of mountain flora. After breakfast, your private transfer will escort you into Switzerland, through the mountain passes and into the Medieval city of Lucerne. The waters of the Reuss River and Lake Lucerne run alongside the city as the mountains encircle the lakeshores with their snow-capped peaks glinting in the sunlight.

Your guide will meet you at the hotel and lead you on an engaging tour of the cobbled streets around the vibrant and historical city. The aroma of spruce wood emanates from the old bridges. The Chapel Bridge was erected in the 14th-century and is one of the oldest covered wooden bridges on the European continent. The 17th-century triangular roof panels depict scenes from Swiss history and local mythology. Adorning the bridges are the coats of arms that highlight the donors who funded the artwork as the Medieval walls continue to protect Lucerne from outside forces with nine towers that soar above the streets. At dusk, the fading light shines a golden hue across the wooden bridges as the scent of chocolate drifts across the cobblestone.

Lucerne – Venture to the Summit of Rigi Mountain to Pilatus Peak

In the morning, the scent of hot chocolate lingers in the celebrated cafes of Old Town. The stone sculpture of the lion at the Lion Monument shines in the passing sunlight. Today, your guide will lead you along the lakeshore to visit the villa of the famous 19th-century composer, Richard Wagner. The structure now houses a museum dedicated to the artist and his collection of historical instruments, which has stood on display since the 1940s. The majority of the collection was moved to Willisau in 2009. The surrounding meadow accentuates the beauty of the villa, providing a beautiful view of the water and the nearby mountains.

The villa itself contains lavish chandeliers and bright natural light. Letters and musical scores offer insight into the thought process of the notable composer, situated near items of clothing and pieces of lavish furniture. After exploring the museum, board the world’s steepest cog railway to reach the top of Pilatus peak at nearly 6,900 feet above sea level. The cool, crisp air bites at your cheeks as the viewing platform provides an immaculate view of Switzerland, from the glistening lakes below to the sporadic forests edging the granite mountain summits.

Interlaken – Relish Enchanting Swiss Landscape on a Scenic Train Ride

In the morning you will leave behind the gorgeous sites of Lucerne for the staggering mountaintops of the Swiss Alps in the gorgeous region of Berner Oberland, in the town of Interlaken. An area of nearly 35 acres that once stood as an Augustinian convent, there is now an avenue that runs between the east and west rail stations that are lined with blossoming flowers and a spectacular view of the Jungfrau peak. Cafes set tables out along the walkway where locals and visitors sip refreshing cups of rich coffee. Your guide will lead you outside of Interlaken to the Valley of 72 Waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley as gigantic rock faces line the lush meadow floors for more than half a mile.

The limestone walls glint in the sunlight beneath the peaks of Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau. Staubbach Falls trundles over the cliff outside of Lauterbrunnen village at a height of 984 feet to make it the second highest waterfall in the country. When the breeze blows, the mist is carried over the foothills and forest. Continue to the incredible Trummelbach Falls, situated within the rock face. Glacial meltwater feeds the waterfall, which has carved a network of chutes into the granite. An elevator takes you to the upper walkways as the lower levels open into a cavern. The thunderous sounds of the water echo off the walls as the falls corkscrew down the mountainside with visible twists and turns.

Interlaken – Delight in a Panorama while Touring the Jungfraujoch Massif

In the morning, make your way to the foothills of the Schilthorn as a natural terrace overlooks the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The 19th-century town of Murren has the natural Swiss charm that emanates from the traditional half-timbered architecture and soaring snow-capped peaks. The scent of the alpine meadows sweeps across the countryside as cows graze on the verdant grass. A cable car takes visitors into the city to pass waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, and quiet farms before reaching the heart of town.

After you visit the enchanting town and enjoy the rich aroma of fresh hot chocolate, board the cogwheel train to the top of Jungfraujoch, often referred to as, “The Roof of Europe.” The train travels a six-mile loop through a long tunnel, and the window offers your first panorama of the meadows that lead to the rugged outcroppings and bleached peaks of the snowy mountain. The pure beauty of the landscape is breathtaking, but the views only get better as you reach Kleine Scheidegg at more than 6,750 feet above sea level.

The railway continues to climb to the Eiger Glacier station at and travel through the long tunnel, which open to sporadic vistas before you arrive at Jungfraujoch, located at 11,000 feet above sea level. You will have an unadulterated view of the ice stream, which travels for more than 13 miles across the stunning landscape. The mountain peaks spread across the horizon painted white with snow as the breeze carries the cold, clean mountain air across your cheeks. If you want to get closer to the ice, you can wander into the Ice Palace, a series of tunnels and galleries carved into the glacier.

Beaune – Visit Switzerland’s Capital City en route to Beaune, France

Today you will leave behind the swelling mountain peaks at the heart of the Swiss Alps in exchange for the rolling hills and luscious vineyards around Beaune, France the capital of Burgundy. En route you will stop in the Swiss capital city of Bern, a picturesque city that makes you feel as though you have stepped into a storybook. Old Town rises above the Aare River with captivating red-tiled roofs, and 16th-century fountains depict regional mythological characters. The aromas of rich chocolate and marzipan emanate from the many confectionaries along the cobblestone streets.

You can stroll beneath the nearly four miles of covered arcades and hide from the crowds in the historic cellar bars. The Zytglogge is the most famous site of the city as the 12th-century clock tower was once connected to the city’s western gate. At four minutes before the hour, the figures inside the clock begin to move, ticking the time away before the bells peal through the city. Legend states that the antique clock helped Einstein revise his theory of relativity. After your tour, continue to the charming Medieval city of Beaune.

Reims – Enjoy a Half-Day Wine Tour before Reaching Reims in Champagne

The quiet streets of Beaune meander beneath the soaring 13th and 14th-century tower at the Place Monge, the central square in town. The Medieval charity hospital of the Hotel-Dieu contains Flemish and Gothic half-timbered buildings with colorful geometric patterned roof tiles. After breakfast, leave the charms of Beaune behind for the enchanting flavors of the Route des Grands Cru. The trail travels a length of forty miles and encompasses numerous wine villages that rise out of the vineyards. The aroma of rich earth and lush vines spreads across the hills as verdant trees shape clusters of forest across the landscape.

Medieval villages with stone churches stand beneath granite cliffs as old cellars and winegrowers’ homes hide in the expansive vines. At Gevrey-Chambertin, you can stroll through the Medieval castle estate that covers more than 1,000 acres from the luxurious galleries in the grounds to the beautiful vines. Your guide will lead you to the cellar where barrels of wine fill the dim and cool gallery beneath the vaulted ceilings. The musty aroma has a hint of sweetness from spilled wine over the years. Sample a glass of Grand Cru and enjoy the aromas of blackcurrant and licorice that rise from the glass. Sip the wine and let the strong, earthy flavor linger on your palette before you travel to Reims near Paris.

Paris – Travel to Paris and Depart for Home

The city of Reims embodies the best of big city splendor with elegant small town charm. Your tour of the city has you following in the footsteps of the French monarchy, specifically in the Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Reims. The Gothic architecture marks the heart of the city where the French kings were once crowned. The interior contains the sacred monument of the 5th-century church where the first Frankish King Clovis was baptized.  The interior nave has a vault reaching 125 feet high with a flurry of sculpted angels that hide in the flying buttresses. After breakfast, your private transfer will meet you at the hotel and escort you to Charles de Gaulle International Airport for your flight home. You could always extend your time in France and enjoy the splendor of Paris for a few days, or travel northbound to Normandy.

Tour de France 2024 starts in Italy for first time ever

For the first time in the event's 121-year history, the Tour de France will begin in Italy.

The 111th edition of the race, which kicks off on Saturday, will go through three full road stages on the Italian peninsula and a fourth in the Italian countryside before heading over the Alps and into France (2,173m route).

An estimated 800,000 cycling fans are expected to gather in Florence, Tuscany, where the Tour's opening weekend — the legendary Grand Depart — will feature one of the hardest and most challenging road stages in the history of the big race. The opening stage will feature an arduous 128-mile road race from Florence to Rimini with an incredible 3,600m elevation gain spread over seven categorized climbs.

The seven categorized climbs on Saturday will provide riders plenty of opportunities to rack up points, especially in the Tour's King of the Mountains competition. Many analysts have predicted a fast start to the opening stage as riders fight and claw to create separation on the roads outside of Florence.

The 2024 Tour de France will feature a 176-strong peloton from 22 teams, headlined by Jonas Vingegaard, the reigning back-to-back champion , and Tadej Pogacar, who won the event in 2020 and 2021. One of those two will cement their legacy as the best of their generation by clinching a third Tour de France title.

Despite not winning the Tour in three years, Pogacar has been hailed as the favorite in light of his recent domination at the Giro race in May . Groupama FDJ team manager Marc Madiot has predicted that Pogacar could "kill" the race in the opening weekend and separate himself from Vingegaard.

"The Tour will be over in three or four days," Madiot told The Guardian . "Pogacar will break things apart and blow out Vingegaard. In his place, that's what I'd do, to be sure Vingegaard doesn’t get back on top form."

The 2024 Tour de France will culminate with the 21st and final stage, from Nice, France, to Monaco, on July 21. Five days later, the Paris Olympics will get underway.

China Focus: Sports events draw Chinese tourists to Europe

BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Li Ao, a resident of Beijing, eagerly anticipates an exciting summer in Europe with the Paris Olympics following hot on the heels of Euro 2024.

Sporting thrills and dopamine delights are expected to entice more Chinese tourists to Europe this summer season, according to domestic travel agencies. Most Chinese watched the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar at venues in China, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summer travel bookings surged significantly, with trips to France seeing an 80 percent year-on-year increase, while bookings for travel to Germany more than doubled, according to a Ctrip report released on June 26.

Despite the fact that Japan, the Republic of Korea and Southeast Asian countries continue to be popular destinations, there has been a notable rise in long-haul trips to Europe, driven by events like Euro 2024 and the upcoming Paris Olympics, said the online travel service provider.

For Li, securing tickets to the women's tennis singles final at the Paris Olympics was a huge relief. "My child loves tennis, and with summer vacation here, watching the tournament live is a stroke of luck for us." He hopes the trip will create lasting memories for his child.

Recognizing the importance of sports in shaping character and instilling important values, Chinese parents are now encouraging their children to engage in physical activities as much as possible. This has been bolstered by government initiatives such as the inclusion of physical education in high school entrance examinations.

Ctrip data shows that hotel bookings in Paris during the Olympics have increased by 108 percent year-on-year since June, while flight bookings to the city have risen by 85 percent.

Euro 2024 has highlighted sports' appeal among Chinese tourists. Qunar, an online travel service provider, reported a doubling of flight bookings to Germany during the football event and a 1.5-fold increase in hotel bookings, with prices up by 25 percent. Notably, searches for Berlin, the host city of the Euro 2024 final, on the platform have increased by 253 percent over the last week.

A corporate legal officer surnamed Ma recently returned from Germany, where he spent six times the normal ticket price to watch the Euro 2024 game between Slovenia and Denmark. Due to visa challenges during Euro 2024, he traveled via Barcelona, where he visited the FC Barcelona Museum and purchased football souvenirs for his son.

"Pity that my son was in school, so he missed the trip," Ma said, adding that he plans to fulfill his 11-year-old son's wish to visit Portugal, the home country of football legend Cristiano Ronaldo, next year.

CASCADING EFFECT ON NEIGHBORS

Euro 2024 and the Paris Olympics have not only boosted travel to Germany and France but also ignited interest in other European destinations, said Cheng Chaogong, a researcher at Tongcheng Travel.

Chinese tourism interest in Paris has increased the most, followed by Berlin, London, Madrid and Athens, according to Tongcheng Travel. Many group tour packages have sold out on the platform.

"Inquiries for chartered tours to France and neighboring countries significantly increased. Routes such as 'France-Italy-Switzerland' and 'Netherlands-Belgium-Luxembourg-France' are particularly popular," said Li Jiang, a provider of European chartered tour services.

A corporate manager of overseas infrastructure projects surnamed Wang, however, has booked a mid-August tour to Nordic countries to avoid popular tourist attractions and the peak tourist seasons.

She will take her 70-year-old mother and two sons on the trip. Despite her extensive experience with overseas business travel, Wang opted for travel agency services for peace of mind. Given the recent unrest in Europe, she feels vulnerable to potential incidents while traveling abroad.

Her mother is a strong motivator for this trip. "After years of staying home due to COVID-19, it is crucial for her to explore while she is still physically able," said Wang.

According to Tongcheng Travel, travel groups containing children constitute 33.8 percent of international flights during the 2024 summer holidays, while those including senior travelers account for 22.5 percent, with the latter up four percentage points year on year.

Citing these figures, Cheng forecasts a significant surge in the number of Chinese families traveling abroad with elderly members this summer. ■

Switzerland v Italy LIVE: Final score and result as Ruben Vargas goal knocks champions out of Euro 2024

Switzerland 2-0 italy: goals from freuler and vargas ensure italy’s title defence ends in the first knockout round, article bookmarked.

Find your bookmarks in your Independent Premium section, under my profile

Italy, the reigning European champions, are out of Euro 2024 after a shockingly poor performance saw them beaten 2-0 by Switzerland in Berlin.

From the start the Swiss dominated. They controlled possession, pressed high and turned the ball over inside Italy’s half regularly. However, there seemed to be a missing ingredient for them as it took 24 minutes for Breel Embolo to draw the first save out of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Yet when the deadlock was broken, Remo Freuler making a run from deep to collect the ball and smoke it past the goalkeeper from inside the box, Switzerland never looked back.

Ruben Vargas added an all important second goal just 27 seconds into the second half with a curling screamer and when Granit Xhaka leading from the middle of the pitch they stopped Italy from gaining a foothold to mount a response.

Arrivederci to the Azzurri, campione d’Europa no more. At the ground where they won their fourth World Cup, Italy’s defence of their European crown came to a premature, timid end.

Marcello Lippi’s team assured themselves of immortality in Berlin 18 years ago; Luciano Spalletti ’s side got only ignominy. They were dismal in defeat.

Switzerland midfielder, Fabian Rieder said: “The feeling is great because we showed a really good performance. We showed from the first second that we really wanted to win this game.

More from Micah Richards who said: “It was almost like the Italian’s today were doing there own jobs and there was no cohesion between them. No one knew when to drop, when to step up and when to pass the ball.”

Alan Shearer added: “I was really shocked at how bad Italy were, they offered nothing in any position and got ran ragged the whole game. I mean, Switzerland toyed with them.”

Micah Richards assessing Italy’s performance: “They were missing some key players. Riccardo Calafiori has been outstanding and one of the key players of the tournament.

“I thought Dimarco’s left foot down that left-hand side was a miss.”

“Switzerland will be a big problem for England, if they get through the quarter-finals.” Said Rio Ferdinand after watching that performance from the Swiss.

Gareth Southgate will be feeling lucky though. Slovakia and Switzerland are the teams to beat for his team to reach the semi-finals.

Alan Shearer speaking on BBC One: “Miles better. Switzerland totally dominated that game, they were absolutely fantastic. They looked really fit and scored two fantastic goals, they deserved their quarter-final spot.”

Switzerland are now through to the quarter-finals and will potentially face England. Gareth Southgate’s men take on Slovakia in their last-16 tie tomorrow and the winner of that one with take on the impressive Swiss side.

Full-time! Switzerland 2-0 Italy

90+2 mins: There goes the whistle!

The reigning champions have been knocked out of Euro 2024 at the first knockout hurdle. A cool, composed and clinical performance from Switzerland was more than enough to get past an underpar Italy.

The Swiss look like potential dark horses in this tournament and have proven it today. For just the second time in their history Switzerland reach the last eight.
