Safari Plus: The jailbreak tweak that lets you micro-manage and customize the Safari app

Safari is the web browser of choice for iPhone and iPad users alike. While it gets the job done in its most basic form, jailbreakers can harness the power of Safari -oriented jailbreak tweaks to unlock power features that ordinary users will drool over.

One of my favorite jailbreak tweaks for the Safari on the iPhone and iPad is Safari Plus , a long-maintained add-on by iOS developer o pa334 that lets you customize so many parameters of the app that it could be thought of as the ‘Springtomize of Safari.’

We originally showed you Safari Plus back in 2017, but a lot had changed since then. Several iterations of iOS & iPadOS later, Safari is almost unrecognizable, and yet opa334 has continued to maintain Safari Plus for up to and including iOS & iPadOS 14.

In addition to maintaining Safari Plus, the time has given the tweak time to mature. An exponential amount of new options have been added since then, so much so that we believe it warrants a second look. Having said that, today we will be showing you the modern Safari Plus tweak.

With so many options to configure, it would be better for us to walk you through the cavernous preference pane that you’ll find in the Settings app post-installation:

In the primary preference pane, you’ll find a number of different sections pertaining to different aspects of the Safari app’s user experience. Among those are:

Since there’s a lot to go over, we’ll move section-by-section to help keep things tidy and reader-friendly.

In the Privacy preference pane, Safari users can:

• List any exceptions to websites

Uploads & Downloads

In the Uploads & Downloads preference pane, Safari users can:

In the Usability preference pane, Safari users can:

• Show both the open in new tab and open in background options when tapping and holding on links
• Enable an open in opposite mode option that opens the selected link in either normal or private browsing — the opposite that you’re currently in
• Enable a desktop mode toggle switch that forces all pages to load in desktop mode when turned on
• Enable or disable a tab manager for batch-closing, exporting, or adding tabs
• Disable Apple’s native tab limit
• Choose to always open new links in a new tab or in the background
• Disable tab swiping — prevents them from being closed when swiped to the left
• Disable private browsing mode entirely
• Insert suggestions when tapping and holding
• Adjust the tap and hold duration
• Focus on the URL bar when using the methods above
• Display the number of tabs you have open
• Enable full-screen scrolling
• Prevent the top and bottom bars of the Safari app from disappearing when scrolling
• Display a website’s full URL
• Skip the download dialog
• Suppress the mailto dialog

In the Actions preference pane, Safari users can:

• Choose which browsing mode to default to on app start
• Choose which browsing mode to default to on app resume
• Choose which browsing mode to default to after opening an external link
• Configure when tabs should and shouldn’t be automatically closed
• Configure when browsing data should and shouldn’t be automatically deleted

In the Gestures preference pane, Safari users can:

• Disable pull up to refresh
• Disable communication error alerts
• Reset all options to their defaults

As we come to the end of Safari Plus’s options, it’s easy to see that this tweak offers huge improvements to the native Safari web browser on pwned iPhones and iPads. There are so many different options that both simple users and power users alike will find value in what it brings to the table.

Safari Plus is available in two different forms, but both are free to download from your preferred package manager app. The first form is the regular one that can be had from the BigBoss repository , while the second form is Cepheiless, and can be had from opa334’s personal repository . Both support jailbroken installations of iOS 8 through 14, and the tweak is open source on the developer’s GitHub page .

This new layout is better IMO, but there are a few other problems that kinda bug me

Unpopular opinion, but this new layout is better. I don’t even remember the old layout since I’m not even a long-time iOS user (this is my first iPhone). I looked up the old layout or the “cascade” layout and it looks more painful to me than the new one. By the looks of it, it’s definitely easier to miss a tab you’re looking for in the older version, and then you will have to spend like 10 more minutes scrolling to find the tab you’re looking for. Sure, it may be “faster”, but it’s definitely harder to find the certain tab you’re looking for if most of the tabs are only viewable by a little area at the top. This app is mostly fine except for a few problems I get from time to time. Today I’m having a problem where I was trying to look at some Google images and then I tried to look at more but it was just stuck on loading. It wouldn’t even finish loading. This happened only on like 2 searches thankfully though. I’d probably give it a 95% since it has some minor lags and problems.

Your Underrated Prince, Safari

In my humble opinion, Safari is the underrated king among multiple web browsers on the market. I was a PC devotee from ‘95 to ‘16, since then, it’s been all Tim Cook 🍎 all the time. My only regret is not purchasing a smartphone back in ‘07 from Steve Jobs. Presently, I own an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold (2016), iPad Mini (2016), iPad Pro (2019) & MacBook (2018) in rose gold with matching Beats By Dre headphones. All four are set up with Safari, not Chrome, TOR, Brave, Edge, or DDGo. I love the ability to quickly save favorites, add to reading list & share content to other platforms. My favorites are alphabetized for quick reference & the reading list keeps all articles & pages in chronological order for quick recall. Also, I learned Safari quickly because it’s extremely user friendly. The browser helped my navigation of Apple when switching from PC. I’ll admit, learning MacBook isn’t easy, but, Safari keeps things familiar for me on the desktop. When lost, just go back to Safari & start over. It’s surprising no one in tech media mentions Safari more often as a go to source for navigating the internet. Chrome is the reigning king of, Land Of Browsers, without an heir apparent. I nominate Safari as the prince with future king potential. Citizens of Land Of Browsers don’t like their chrome-plated dirty laundry aired, sold or tracked.

I have been using this for years and had no problems with it. I ran over my phone with my lawn mower and was without my phone for over a year due to having to fight with the insurance company. However when I finally got a lawyer involved the insurance company finally replaced it for me. I DID not lose anything and I mean anything. I like the cards better because they are easier to clear out. You have to back everything up to your cloud every day or every other day so that you don’t have to worry about losing anything. As I always make sure that I back everything up just in case. It is not apples fault if you lose your any of your information it is yours for not backing up your phone to your cloud. So most of the people who write bad reviews either don’t back up or they just don’t or they just don’t care. Apple doesn’t charge a lot to add more space to your cloud so there is no reason why you can’t back you things. This is better than anything that google has. By far. If you want your information used by third parties then use google’s and quit complaining. You can change your browser in safari so that you don’t have to use them get with it you bad reviews and learn how to use safari.

To compile the WebContent part of Safari Plus, slightly patched WebKit headers are needed. Running the get_webkit.sh script will download and patch them automatically.

There are also some variables you can set when running make:

Safari 11 is not a standalone application that you can download.

Safari 11 is part of the macOS High Sierra installation, with minor updates to Safari becoming available with regular updates to that operating system. If you have Sierra 10.12.6, or El Capitan 10.11.6 installed, then you are also eligible to receive Security updates for those two operating systems — that will include Safari 11, and its minor revisions. These will appear in the Mac App Store Updates tab.

I have applied all Security updates after 10.11.6 was released, and now have Safari 11.1.1.

Once macOS Mojave is released, it is likely that El Capitan (10.11.6) Security updates will disappear from the second paragraph.

iOS 18 public beta 3 is now available, here’s what’s new

Today Apple has released public beta 3 for iOS 18. This new public beta brings with it the variety of changes introduced in yesterday’s developer beta , and is available for download now to members of Apple’s public beta program . Here’s everything that’s new.

Photos app changes in public beta 3

The Photos app’s big redesign has received some fine tuning in public beta 3.

• Apple has removed the carousel design at the top of the app, which previously enabled swiping horizontally between your library and other app sections like Favorites.
• More of your library is now displayed in the top section of the screen, reducing the need to swipe down to access all your photos.
• The Albums section is now featured higher in the app’s hierarchy by default, though you can still customize its position.
• Finally, Recent Days now includes recently saved images too.

Apple says these changes have been implemented in direct response to users’ feedback to the earliest betas.

Safari’s new ‘Thanos snap’ feature

Apple’s browser Safari has a new Distraction Control feature that allows you to hide bothersome content on websites. It’s intended for annoying overlays or ads that get in the way of your content.

After enabling Distraction Control from Safari’s controls menu, you can tap on different elements on a page to see the option to hide them. The best part? The ‘ Thanos snap ’ animation you see as the hidden content turns to dust and flies away.

Public beta 3 also introduces a variety of design and UI tweaks throughout iOS 18. You can more easily access the screen for editing multiple Home Screen pages. Public beta schedule moving forward

If Apple follows previous years’ patterns, we should expect a fairly predictable schedule for upcoming public beta releases. Now that we’ve entered August, and the iPhone 16 event is only a month away , the release of iOS 18 betas will accelerate.

Expect to see new betas every week leading up to September. Those betas will come with fewer noticeable changes in every release, but more bug fixes and stability improvements. Apple’s focus throughout August will be on stabilizing iOS 18 in preparation for its public launch in September.

Try Apple's 'Thanos Snap' Safari Feature in the Latest iOS 18 Beta

The feature can make website banners and some pop-ups turn to dust in the blink of an eye.

Apple released the third public beta for  iOS 18  on Aug. 6, about two months after the tech giant announced the software at its  Worldwide Developers Conference  in June. The beta brings new features to the iPhones of developers and beta testers, like the ability to customize your home screen and RCS messaging . It also brings a new feature to your Safari app called Distraction Control, which lets you hide banners and some pop-ups from websites you visit.

Because this operating system is still in beta, I recommend downloading it only on something other than your primary device. Because this isn't the final version of iOS 18, the update might be buggy and battery life may be short, and it's best to keep those troubles on a secondary device. For example, I download and test iOS betas on an old  iPhone XR  to keep any issues away from my primary phone, an  iPhone 14 Pro .

Here's what to know about Safari's Distraction Control feature.

How to turn Distraction Control on

1. Open Safari. 2. Go to a webpage. 3. Tap the Reader icon in your address bar -- it's on the left side of the bar and looks like a rectangle with two dashes beneath it. 4. Tap the three dots ( ... ). 5. Tap Hide Distracting Items .

Safari will take you back to the website, and you now have to select which items to hide. Once you've tapped an item, a perimeter will appear around it with the word Hide in the center. Tap Hide  and the item will disappear like it was snapped by Thanos in the Avengers.

What Distraction Control hides

Distraction Control can hide certain banners, pop-ups and other items you might see on a webpage. For instance, if you visit a news site and always see a form to receive that site's newsletter, you can block the form from appearing now and every time you visit the website later. Once you enable Distraction Control, you have to select which items on a webpage the feature targets.

Will Distraction Control work on every website?

Distraction Control can work on every website, but you have to enable it on each individual webpage. For every site you go to, you have to turn Distraction Control on. That means you can't enable the feature once and be done. 

Will Distraction Control always hide items?

Not necessarily. Distraction Control won't permanently remove ads or other areas that constantly change. For example, you can't hide an ad that's in a window within a webpage, but you can hide pop-up requests to create an account.

You can also see what Distraction Control is blocking if you want to take a peek. If you enable Distraction Control on a certain webpage, a little blue indicator will appear in your address bar to let you know the feature is working on that page. You can click this indicator and then click Show Hidden Items to reveal everything that Distraction Control is hiding.

Distraction Control is still in beta, so it might be buggy or not work properly. There will likely be more betas before the feature is released to the public, so there's plenty of time for Apple to address any issues. As of now, there's no word on when Apple will release Distraction Control to the general public.

If Safari isn't loading websites or quits on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you can't load a website or webpage, or Safari quits unexpectedly, follow these steps.

Connect to a different network

Try to load a website, like www.apple.com , using cellular data. If you don't have cellular data, connect to a different Wi-Fi network , then load the website.

If you're using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), check your VPN settings . If you have a VPN turned on, some apps or websites might block content from loading.

Restart your device

Turn off your device and turn it on again.

Clear website data

You can clear website data occasionally to improve Safari performance.

Go to Settings > Safari.

Tap Clear History and Website Data.

Tap Clear History to confirm.

Turn on JavaScript

Turn on JavaScript.
