A young heroine's long journey.
When still a child in France, she saved 28 children from deportation
She bakes apple cakes for her grandchildren in her apartment near Tel Aviv and hopes for the day when peace breaks out in the Middle East. Fanny Ben-Ami, a stylish 85-year-old, knows a thing or two about war. When still a child in France, she saved 28 children from deportation, a story she has told in a memoir that has now been fictionalised as a film, Le Voyage de Fanny (Fanny's Journey) directed by Lola Doillon.
Born in the German spa town of Baden-Baden where her father was a maker of orthopaedic shoes, Fanny was three when her Russian-born parents left for Paris in 1933 to flee the Nazis. "My father was a kind, loving man who could fly into terrible rages," she recalls. "He'd dance Cossack dances, and sing to us at bedtime. Mother was shy and anxious, not nearly as cuddly."
A week before war was declared, her father was arrested by the French secret police. Fanny and her sisters were sent by their mother to the Chateau de Chaumont in central France, a red-brick and stone building run by the Jewish OSE association, which was to save thousands of children. Life was stimulating there and the war seemed far away; at the village school, the teachers, other pupils and their parents never let on to anyone that they were Jewish.
This reprieve lasted for almost three years until a new village priest reported the presence of Jewish children. Thanks to a tip-off from the local police, they were progressively scattered across France to other hiding places.
Fanny joined her aunt in Tence, south-east France, while her sisters were sent to a shelter for hidden children. Then, one day, Fanny heard that her mother was imprisoned in Lyon and travelled there to see her. With characteristic boldness, she convinced the guards to release her mother for 24 hours.
The three sisters were reunited in 1943 in Mégève in the Haute Savoie, living with their mother and aunt in a hostel for OSE refugees. In 1943, with the Germans getting closer, the plan was to send them and a group of other children, aged from four to 17, to the Swiss border under the protection of a 17-year-old boy. When he suddenly abandoned them, 13-year-old Fanny took over. She was to head by train to Annemasse, from where they would meet their smuggler. But they never reached Annemasse because the bridge at Annecy was bombed.
Fanny was a natural leader. "I was a rebellious child who did pretty much what she wanted," she says, "but with two little sisters, I was used to looking after children."
Her story is of an unusually resourceful child in a world of crazed adults. "I had never wanted to be put in a position of responsibility, but I had no choice and I was angry. What had I done wrong? I hadn't stolen, I hadn't killed, was it a crime to be Jewish?"
Fanny says that, to this day, she can judge by a person's physiognomy whether they are well disposed. "I got off the train and saw a railwayman with a big moustache and something kind about his eyes, and decided to trust him." He told her she could reach Annemasse via Lyons. "Is there no other way," she asked, knowing that Lyons was Gestapo headquarters. "A goods train," he said, helping the children inside and wishing them luck. Their troubles weren't yet over as the lorry bringing them to the border was stopped by police. The children were arrested and locked up.
For three days, the policemen denied them food or drink to make them admit they were Jewish and divulge their parents' whereabouts. But even the youngest had been taught to give a false name and insist they were Catholic. In the end, the children did reach Switzerland but, as Fanny says, "my Shoah only really began when the war ended. Throughout the war, I had been looking forward to being reunited with our parents. It wasn't to be." Fanny and her sisters eventually discovered their parents had died in the Auschwitz and Lublin concentration camps. All hope was destroyed.
Fanny lived for a while with a family she had spent holidays with in Switzerland. She hoped to study art in Zurich but the Swiss authorities sent her back to France, where she joined her aunt in the fur trade. "I needed the money but I loved animals and hated that they had to be killed." After a while, she moved to Paris and made good money as a furrier. Israel was never an obvious choice. "I hadn't been raised in a Zionist milieu, and my aunt said Israel was only good for dying in."
But Fanny's sisters had settled there and when she visited for the first time in 1955 she was struck by something that made her feel at home. "I was shocked to hear people speaking so loudly in Yiddish, and said so to an aunt. She replied, everyone here speaks Yiddish and all the other languages as well. I began to ask myself what France had ever done for me, apart from giving me a passport."
Before long, she moved to a kibbutz and met her future husband, a musician. "We were going to build the country together rather than chase after money."
Personal tensions led the couple to leave the kibbutz and move to Holon, south of Tel Aviv, where she resumed her trade as a furrier and had two children. "Then, one day, my husband said, 'we'll never be millionaires, so why don't you do what you really want to do?'"
So Fanny started to draw, and now she spends her time doing watercolour landscapes, portraits and still lifes. She recently produced 27 watercolours of her childhood journey through France: "Those are the only drawings I've done of the Shoah."
Her memoir was published in France last year, inspiring director Doillon to make it into a film.
When she first saw the movie, Fanny was a little taken aback by the liberties taken with her story, but now she says it conveys the appropriate message. "The film is in memory of the children who got out, those who didn't, and the children who today are still being sacrificed by adults at war."
'Fanny's Journey' is being shown at the UKJFF's closing gala on Sunday November 20 at the Regent Street Cinema. Fanny Ben-Ami will be taking part in a Q&A session.

A group of Jewish youngsters flees Nazi-occupied France in the inspired-by-fact WWII drama “Fanny’s Journey,” the third feature from director Lola Doillon (“In Your Hands,” “Just About Love”). The film is a handsome, compelling period piece that deftly portrays events through the eyes of its young protagonists. Nevertheless, despite committed performances from the small fry and one of spirited conviction from Cecile de France as the resourceful school mistress trying to spirit them to Switzerland, the end result comes off rather like the equivalent of old-fashioned, young adult fiction; everything really bad happens off-screen. Moreover, a surfeit of forced lyricism undermines the tale’s natural poignancy, signaling that Jewish festival slots and ancillary are more likely than theatrical play offshore.
In 1943, after their father’s arrest, the titular Fanny (feisty newcomer Léonie Souchaud) and her clingy younger sisters Erika (Fantine Harduin) and Georgette (Juliane Lepoureau) are taken by their mother to spend the war years in a boarding school in France’s neutral zone, a spot where Jewish children could keep a low profile. But the school isn’t a safe haven for long; the Jewish students are smuggled to another institution in the Italian zone just ahead of a German raid. Doillon shows that the youngest among them barely understand what is going on as they depart with a friendly wave to the priest who informed on them.
Under the care of the formidable, tough but tender Madame Forman (de France), Fanny, who is turning 13, is given a position of responsibility in the school’s kitchen, where she listens admiringly to the boasts of teen cook Elie (Victor Meutelet) about his participation in the Resistance. When Mussolini’s regime falls, Mme Forman realizes that it won’t be long before the Germans fill the void so she immediately plots a way to save her charges. She obtains false passports and forces the youngsters to learn their new names and backstories before dispatching them by train towards the Swiss border. De France is in her element here, serving up a tour de force performance that includes a dead faint to distract the attention of the station police.
Popular on Variety
En route, circumstances force the frightened Fanny to take a leadership position within the small group of eight who are traveling with her. Before disappearing from the story, Mme Forman wisely instructs her, “If you are scared, pretend otherwise for the sake of the others.” Doillon then ratchets up the tension as the nervous children make their way through a busy train station full of German soldiers and are eventually betrayed by a fellow traveler and held for several days without food or drink by gendarmes working with the Nazis.
As the kids eventually develop solidarity and the ability to work together, Doillon and co-writer Anne Peyregne can’t resist including several over-scored, Hallmark movie moments in which the youngsters frisk and play as if they weren’t really in the middle of fleeing for their lives. Also wince-worthy is some out-of-the-mouth-of-babes dialogue such as Georgette’s naïve question, “Why can’t we stop being Jews?” Despite this criticism, the narrative manages to bring an important period of history alive for the next generation even as the people who lived it are dying off. And the final moving scenes can’t help but provoke comparisons and discussions of what is now happening to immigrants at European borders.
Doillon, who displayed a strong rapport with adolescents in “Just About Love,” proves that she is an equally fine director of children, many of them non-professionals. She reportedly saw over 10,000 youngsters to choose her expressive performers.
While the entire cast acquits themselves well, the impressive, nuanced camerawork by Pierre Cottereau (who also recently shot Christian Carion’s WWII drama “Come What May”) is the film’s strongest technical asset. His perspective matches the children’s point of view and emphasizes their need to be out of sight through tight framing in claustrophobic spaces. The costumes strike a period look, but remain unbelievably clean and intact given the characters’ travails.

The film starts with Fanny saying goodbye to her mother, at the moment that she, together with other Jewish children, goes into hiding from the Germans in occupied France (and not as described in the synopsis above). The leading role is played by the young girl Léonie Souchaud, also not mentioned in the cast by Moviemeter.
The film tells about the perseverance and courage of a 13-year-old girl who tries to escape the persecution of the Jews together with other fellow sufferers. During the war years, the French organization OSE succeeded in evacuating many Jewish children to countries such as Switzerland, often in difficult and rushed situations, where, as here, the children ended up in a true adventure.
"Le Voyage de Fanny" is an impressive, often moving film with excellent performances by the children. Cécile de France and Stéphane de Groodt are also good in their (important) supporting roles.
Beautiful construction. Maybe sometimes a little too long scenes, great photography and a true event.

Meeslepende oorlogsfilm met een onwaarschijnlijk, maar niettemin waargebeurd verhaal. De kind acteurs zijn allemaal goed op dreef en komen heel naturel over. Een mooie, soms enerverende film.
Compelling war film with an unlikely, but nevertheless true story. The child actors are all on a roll and come across as very natural. A beautiful, sometimes exciting film.

Fanny’s Journey (Le Voyage de Fanny)
Movie information.
I don’t know that I’ve ever come across a Holocaust movie for kids, but having seen Fanny’s Journey it occurs to me that the failure to cover such a crucial chapter in world history from exactly that angle has been an oversight. This is not to say that the topic hasn’t been touched on in family-friendly films prior to Fanny , but that no film that comes readily to mind has depicted the events of World War II in such an accessible way to children. Director Lola Doillon, working from an autobiographical novel by Fanny Ben Ami, accomplishes this task by grounding the narrative in a child’s perspective, while keeping the horrors of war — and the more grievous implications of the story — sufficiently on the periphery to avoid traumatizing young viewers.
The story follows twelve-year-old Fanny (newcomer Léonie Souchaud), tasked with looking after her two younger sisters after their father is arrested, forcing them into hiding in a French school. Along with the other Jewish children being illicitly sheltered, they are shuffled to another location just steps ahead of a German raid — and this security proves to be just as short lived. After the arrest of Mussolini, the children’s caretaker (a fantastic Cecile de France) sees the writing on the wall, shuffling them off to the Swiss border on a series of trains. Along the way, the children lose their cowardly guardian (Fanny’s unrequited older crush) leaving them to fend for themselves as they make their way through enemy territory towards sanctuary in Switzerland.
The constant threats the children face are depicted in a way that is at once relatable and comprehensible to a child’s perspective, and Doillon takes great pains to convey her point without generating too much menace for younger audiences. The issue with this approach is that it simultaneously undermines and aggrandizes Fanny’s heroism as she becomes the de facto leader of the children, straining credulity at points with its oversimplification of the events portrayed. Souchaud is a promising child performer, although many of her castmates don’t fare as well, and adult actors such as de France are generally relegated to a few scenes at most, lending the film a slightly amateurish quality at times. Doillon’s direction tends to favor a bright tonality, presumably intended to appear inviting to the film’s intended audience, but sweeping mountain vistas seem a bit too bucolic when they’re the backdrop for a twelve-year-old girl being shot at by Nazis.
If most films dealing with the Jewish experience during World War II tend to be unbearablely harsh Holocaust dramas such as Son of Saul , Fanny’s Journey is on the absolute opposite end of the spectrum. It’s a moving story that achieves an important aim by introducing young viewers to a very thorny topic in a way that they can comprehend, but that very virtue will limit its appeal to mass audiences. Still, it’s a touching and significant movie that fills an underserved gap in the cinematic recounting of a pivotal moment in the history of mankind, and as such, more than merits a viewing. Not Rated. French and German dialogue with English subtitles. Opens Friday at Fine Arts Theatre.
