Further Haircut 100 information: Haircut 100 released their debut album in February 1982, ‘Pelican West’. The band were an instant smash with four UK Top 10 singles including ‘Fantastic Day’, ‘Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)’ and ‘Love Plus One’, with the album storming into the UK Top 10 for three months, ten weeks of which were in the Top 5, and 34 weeks in the Top 40.
Over 40 years on, the band released a bonus version of that iconic ‘Pelican West’ album, with a one-off live show to bring the album to life – public demand for tickets spurred the need for a full UK tour. Haircut 100 are back! Over four CDs, there are 54 tracks, of which 24 are unreleased, including nascent versions of later Nick Heyward solo hits ‘Whistle Down The Wind’, ‘Blue Hat For A Blue Day’ and the great lost Haircut 100 single ‘Sunny Boy, Sunny Girl’. The album is available as a Super Deluxe Edition featuring a new remaster of ‘Pelican West,’ all the 12” mixes and b-sides, a live set from Hammersmith Odeon and for the first time, the demos for their unfinished second album, which was given the provisional title ‘Blue Hat For A Blue Day’. The 4-CD set features a 44-page booklet with a new 10,000-word sleeve note featuring an oral history of the time with all members interviewed by the set’s curator, author and DJ Daryl Easlea. The booklet includes memorabilia and exclusive photos from the personal collection of Haircut’s guitarist Graham Jones and bassist Les Nemes.

“Our fans are incredible and tickets sold out so fast that our families and friends almost missed the boat, those tickets became gold dust. But we are coming back with a tour to beat all tours this autumn, and we can’t wait.

The group debuted in 1982 with their No. 4 hit Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl) , charted one place higher with Love Plus One , and did one better still with their album ‘Pelican West’.
More hits followed with that same album’s Fantastic Day and one-off Nobody’s Fool , both of which peaked within the Top 10, but shortly afterwards the vocalist departed and pursued a successful solo career over the decades that followed.
However, the original quartet has remained friends throughout the years and the foursome got back together in 2004 to perform Love Plus One and Fantastic Day on VH1’s ‘Bands Reunited’ TV show, then did the whole of their debut album at Indigo at The O2 in London in 2011.
Earlier this year, Nick told RETROPOP’s that he, Les and Graham are in the very early stages of making a new album together, sharing: “Who knows what will happen but there’ll be lots of creativity going on. That’s the band: it’s the strong bond between Les, Graham and I. In the beginning we lived together above a flower shop in Gloucester Road and we loved each other. We were such great mates and we still are.”
Since working together again, they’ve never discussed Nick’s solo success and whether there was any jealousy there. “We haven’t talked about it. It’s like when guys don’t talk about things that have happened with ex-girlfriends and stuff like that,” he insisted. “I know guys who can play golf together for years and never talk about the fact one of their wives left them for the other one.
“There’s loads of unanswered questions but as Les says now, ‘I just let everything go,’ and I agree with that. It’s a much better place to be in when you let everything go. We’ve moved on and when we get together now it’s always great.
“It’s not just for Christmas or whether we do one gig together. We are bandmates even when the band isn’t active. We turn up somewhere and we’re dressed the same. There’s an alchemy there, an innate way of sticking together. Les, Graham and I have now said, ‘This is it now, friends for life’.”

Haircut 100 Biography
Can you guess the year? Excitement is building for a new, much-anticipated album and gigs by one of Britain's most-loved and creative pop bands. They are Haircut 100, and actually, there are two correct answers. One is 1982, and the other is 2024. The exuberant reaction to last year's live reunion by the British tunesmiths, who played selected shows in the spring followed by an equally rapturously-received tour in the autumn, underlined the sheer timelessness of their appeal. The same went for the expanded, 40th anniversary reissue of Pelican West, their one and only album with original frontman and songwriter, Nick Heyward.
That cherished LP contained their trademarks "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)," "Love Plus One" and "Fantastic Day," all UK top ten singles in the 1982-83 season. Soon they added a fourth, "Nobody's Fool," By which time, Pelican West was already platinum-certified in the UK, only three months after release. The album spent 11 consecutive weeks in the British top ten and twice reached No. 2. It also charted in the US, Australia and beyond, after which Heyward left for a distinguished solo career, which included another top ten title, North of a Miracle, in a collection of nine LPs in his own name to date. Heyward told Classic Pop of Haircut 100's unique recipe: “I’d come up with songs to inspire everyone else to get colouring them in. Everyone played their role. What I wrote was different and mixed up. This wasn’t The Carpenters.” Added bassist Les Nemes: “It’s only recently that I realised we had our own sound. But we never questioned that we were going to succeed. We never said: ‘If we make it,’ it was always: ‘When we make it.’ We always had the confidence that we were something special.” Pop songwriting this imaginative and uplifting has simply never been replaced, so the prospect of H100's reawakening, Heyward and all, was always going to be seized upon by original fans and inquisitive newcomers. "A fun, breezy treat," enthused Dave Lawrence in the York Press about the final night on the 2023 tour, noting with some delight that it was a little over 15,000 days since he'd last seen them play live. Other reviews noted, for example, that the Cardiff show was full of "good showmanship," while in Bournemouth the band "settled into old grooves and friendships". All agreed that the signature singles and adored album tracks sounded fresher than ever, as they did in a memorable collaboration with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the hallowed Maida Vale Studios for Radio 2's 2023 Piano Room Month.
During the tour, there was also plenty of enthusiasm for the new songs that accompanied their catalogue of hits, and that's where the 2024 chapter of the Haircut 100 story begins. Heyward is collaborating with fellow founder members Nemes, Graham Jones and Blair Cunningham on what will be their collective follow-up to Pelican West, and festival dates as well as a tour of North America are also being lined up for the year ahead. Plenty more fantastic days beckon for Haircut 100.
