Work from home? The benefits of booking a cleaning with Well-Paid Maids

For many remote workers, a messy home is distracting.

You’re getting pulled into meetings, and your unread emails keep ticking up. But you can’t focus because pet hair tumbleweeds keep floating across the floor, your desk has a fine layer of dust and you keep your video off in meetings so no one sees the chaos behind you.

It’s no secret a dirty home is distracting and even adds stress to your life. And who has the energy to clean after work? That’s why it’s smart to enlist the help of professionals, like Well-Paid Maids.

Charlotte Geary for Visit Fairfax

There’s a lot to love about Reston, Virginia . Just 30 minutes from Washington, D.C ., this vibrant town can feel both urban and suburban. Reston was one of the first planned communities in the country and was designed as a place to work, play, learn, shop, and get involved. Today, it’s noted for its open-air town center, green spaces, arts and culture, and walking and biking trails that make it easy to get around Reston. Book a room at the Hyatt Regency Reston to be at the center of the action when you come to explore. Here’s what to do on your next visit to Reston.

Explore Lake Anne Plaza

Lake Anne Plaza is one of five village centers in Reston that attracts residents and visitors alike with its weekly seasonal farmers market, walking trails, boutique shops, and gathering places, like Café Montmartre and Lake Anne Coffee House. In summer, look for festivals, like the Cardboard Boat Regatta and Reston Pride, as well as pedal boat, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard rentals on the 17-acre lake. Stop to snap a few photos of the beloved Van Gogh Bridge.

lakeannemerchantsassociation.org , 1609 Washington Plaza N, Reston, VA 20190

Visit the Reston Museum

Stop in the free Reston Museum for artifacts, exhibits, photographs, and art works that illustrate the history of Reston, one of the first planned communities in the United States. Temporary and permanent exhibits share how Reston came to be Reston, from the early days in 1962 when the town was little more than a master plan that placed importance on walkability, amenities, recreation areas, and usability as a space for work and play.

Shop, Play, and Stay in Reston Town Center

Reston Town Center is widely considered the heart of Reston. Since Reston Town Center opened in 1990, this mixed-use open-air space has grown, adding more offices, restaurants, bars, shops, a movie theater, a fountain, a four-star hotel, and a seasonal ice skating rink. The Washington & Old Dominion Trail, a 45-mile paved rail-trail, skirts along Reston Town Center’s south side. In November 2022, the Reston Town Center subway station opened, allowing easy public transit access to and from Reston.

Get Outside In Reston

Go for a bike ride on a rail-trail.

The paved 45-mile Washington & Old Dominion Trail runs from Arlington to Purcellville, Virginia. A great place to pick up the trail in Reston is at Bike Lane Brewing & Café , a bike shop that sells coffees, teas, pastries, and cold brews. The shop also sells, services, and rents bikes, including pedal-assist e-bikes, for those who want to hit the trail but don’t have a bike.

Eat And Drink In Reston

Go out for drinks.

Great American Restaurants

For drinks out with friends, you’re covered in Reston. In late-2023, Sixty Vines , a wine-themed restaurant with 60 wines on tap opened at Reston Town Center. Yes, wines on tap. Wines come from reusable kegs rather than single-use glass bottles. You can also sample wines (and tapas) at Barcelona Wine Bar . For fruity cocktails with colorful umbrellas, head to Tiki Thai . There’s even a hidden speakeasy in Reston called Heirloom (hint, it’s tucked into Open Road Distilling Co.).

Start Your Day with Brunch

Brunch is everyone’s favorite meal and Reston has more than a few restaurants that know how to do brunch. A favorite is Makers Union , which serves up brunch faves like smashed avocado toast and smoked salmon lox. It’s a must to order the maple-sweet monkey bread. For more brunch deliciousness – as well as mimosas and bellinis – head to Founding Farmers or Ted’s Bulletin .

Eat on an Outdoor Patio

It’s easy to love an open-air patio and there are plenty of places to eat outside in Reston, including Ariake , a Japanese restaurant and Cafesano , a Mediterranean restaurant. Another favorite is Kalypso’s Sports Tavern on Lake Anne, which is considered by many to have the best waterfront and dog-friendly dining in Fairfax County. Red’s Table is another top pick when you want to enjoy delicious cuisine and enjoy the views across Lake Anne from the open-air dining room.

Visit an Art Gallery

For arts and culture, there are wonderful museums and art galleries in Reston, including Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art , which celebrates 50 years in 2024. Tephra ICA hosts art exhibitions, as well as public programs that encourage a meaningful dialogue about art works. At Reston Art Gallery , which is only open on weekends, look for rotating exhibitions in a variety of art mediums, including photography, sculpture, and oil painting. Reston has a variety of public art works , too.

See a Theater Performance

At Reston’s CenterStage , a 260-seat theatre hosts dozens of cultural performances each year that range from musicals to author talks to comedy shows. There are also live concerts throughout the year in such musical genres as classical, soul, and bluegrass. CenterStage is known for summer concerts and annual festivals, like the Reston Multicultural Festival.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — James Karinchak was spotted in the Guardians clubhouse ahead of Thursday’s series finale against Boston at Progressive Field. The right-hander has been on the 60-day injured list since March 28 as he continues to recover from shoulder soreness that he experienced in spring training.

Manager Stephen Vogt said Karinchak will travel during the upcoming six-game road trip to Atlanta and Houston under the watchful eye of Guardians trainers and coaches.

“It’s a good time for our pitching guys to get their eyes on him,” Vogt said. “He’s getting closer to getting to the mound, so we just thought it would be a good time for him to come get with the guys, mix in with them. Also, just a chance for our trainers and pitching coaches to get their hands on him and see where he is at.”

Karinchak has progressed to throwing at 250 feet and is continuing to build toward a return to the mound, Vogt told reporters Tuesday. He is not eligible to come off the injured list until May 30, but will likely need several rehab appearances in minor league games before then.

Karinchak split last season between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus, spending three extended stints on the major league roster. He finished with a 3.23 ERA in 39 innings across 44 appearances. Karinchack was 2-4 with a 3.90 ERA through 32 outings before he was optioned on June 10.

In his August and September stints with the Guardians, Karinchak made 10 scoreless appearances in 12 outings and posted a 1.59 ERA with 14 strikeouts. Karinchak’s walk numbers climbed in 2023 as he pitched to a 6.46 walks per nine innings and a career-low strikeout to walk ratio of 1.86. Still, the righty held opposing hitters to a .178 batting average and had the third-lowest opponent average among MLB relievers from 2019 to 2013 behind Devin Williams and Josh Hader.

I-690 jam

Syracuse, N.Y. — Drivers should seriously consider not using Interstate 81 Thursday afternoon to avoid closures and delays caused by President Biden’s visit to Syracuse.

Closures of parts of I-81 are expected to cause massive traffic delays.

Biden will visit Syracuse to talk about the CHIPS and Science Act that lured Micron Technology to Central New York. The speech is at the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology.

Starting around noon until around 1:30 p.m. Thursday I-81 south with be closed from Route 481 to Franklin Street in Syracuse, said Sgt. Jack Keller, a State Police spokesperson. That’s 7.5 miles of the interstate.

I-81 North will be closed from I-690 to the Syracuse Airport exit from around 2:45 to 3:45 p.m., Keller said. That’s about 5 miles of the highway.

When Biden last visited Syracuse in October 2022, the president’s exit from the city caused massive traffic backups on I-690 West.

Mass. Rep. Keating, back from Ukraine trip, warns of war’s high stakes for U.S., world

Members of Congress speak in Ukraine

A newly approved package of $61 billion in U.S. aid may prevent Ukraine from losing its war against Russia. But winning it will be a long slog. (AP Photo/Francisco Seco) AP

Moments after they cast their ballots for a bill sending tens of billions of dollars in American aid to war-torn Ukraine last weekend, U.S. Rep. Bill Keating, joined by three of his colleagues, left the U.S. Capitol and started on a whirlwind journey that would end, roughly 48 hours, with a meeting with that nation’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

It would be a trip shot through with reminders of the foreign policy challenges the United States and its allies face as the mid-point of 2024 approaches, and as both Ukraine’s fight for survival against Russian strongman Vladimir Putin and Israel’s ever-bloodier war with the terrorist group Hamas continue to rage on without a solution for either in sight.

In Poland, Keating and three of his colleagues toured a Jewish community center, and one of the most visceral and haunting reminders of the Holocaust, the Auschwitz concentration camp where hundreds of thousands of people, most of them Jews, were tortured and murdered.

In Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv, the lawmakers dealt with the juxtaposition of people strolling the shattered city’s parks and squares, who frequently scramble, as air raid sirens warned of incoming Russian missiles .

They came face-to-face with Zelenskyy as the former television personality-turned-war time leader ended a call with President Joe Biden on Monday, where the two discussed the congressional aid vote.

“He spent about an hour with us. It was a far-ranging talk, a sometimes personal talk,” Keating, D-9th District, who serves on the House’s Foreign Affairs Committee Europe Subcommittee, told MassLive on Thursday, hours after he and his fellow lawmakers returned to the United States.

“Then relief was there. He’s under enormous stress, trying to manage a civil society and keeping its economy going,” Keating continued, adding that, just days earlier, Zelenskyy said he’d traveled to the front lines, where “there was live fire,” and shortly after “another assassination plot” against the Ukrainian leader had been uncovered.

“We saw him with him and his ministers ― they were delighted with the tally of the vote, almost three quarters in a very divided House,” Keating told MassLive.

Keating was joined on the trip by fellow U.S. Reps. Thomas Kean Jr., R-N.J., who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe, and U.S. Reps. Nathaniel Moran, R-Texas, and and Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., who also sit on the subcommittee.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The visit also came after Biden approved a new batch of funding for the long-range missiles that Ukrainian forces already have twice rained down against their Russian adversaries. The Army Tactical Missile Systems, which have a range of around 200 miles, had long been sought by Zelenskyy’s government, Politico reported .

Zelenskyy discussed the importance of that kind of tactical assistance, but also gave lawmakers a look in on his daily life, Keating said, speaking to them of the trips his family and other Ukrainian families had taken to the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which Russia invaded and annexed in 2014 .

That act of Russian hostility a decade ago is now viewed as a place-setter for the current war, which entered into its 791st day on Thursday.

Keating said Zelenskyy looks forward to the day those seaside trips resume, taking “a breath [to] talk about his country in a personal sense.”

A CBS News poll released earlier this month showed that a clear majority of Americans (53%) support U.S. military aid to Ukraine, but those views are predicated on age, memories of the Cold War, and party affiliation, according to Spectrum News .

Support for U.S. military assistance ran strongest among Democrats (74%) and independents (50%) in the canvass of 2,399 U.S. adults who were interviewed between April 9 and April 12.

Six in 10 Republicans (61%) said the U.S. should not send weapons or more military aid. Nearly 7 in 10 supporters of former President Donald Trump responded the same way, the poll showed.

Speaking to MassLive, Keating said he believes the price of U.S. inaction on Ukraine is far higher than the aid package that he and his fellow lawmakers approved last week. And unlike the United States’ decades-long involvement in Afghanistan, this “will not be nation-building. They will take off on their own. We’re not communicating that.”

“This issue, to me, we’re dealing with, has enormous historical consequences,” Keating said. “We are at a pivotal moment, where it could shift. Putin has made it clear, that he will go after the Baltic countries. They are NATO countries. We will have our sons and daughters on the ground dealing with that. We would be putting so many young men and women in harm’s way.”
