Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

Cruise Control problems of the 2000 Toyota Camry

Six problems related to cruise control have been reported for the 2000 Toyota Camry. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2000 Toyota Camry based on all problems reported for the 2000 Camry.

1 Cruise Control problem

The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while driving 78 mph, the cruise control failed to disengage when the brakes were applied. Instead, the vehicle haphazardly pulled to the left, causing the contact to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle rolled over three times and crashed into a median strip. The contact sustained a fractured scapula and several bruises. A police report was filed of the incident. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to an auto body shop. The manufacturer was notified, the VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 220,000. Updated 01/234/lj.

2 Cruise Control problem

I purchased a previously owned 2000 Toyota Camry on 11/4/07. While driving from northern California to southern California on the loss date I activated the cruise control feature. Traffic on the freeway began to slow and I depressed the brake pedal to slow the vehicle. Traffic began moving again then suddenly stopped. I again depressed the brake pedal but the car seemed to accelerate even though I had both of my feet on the brake pedal. My car crashed into the rear of a vehicle in front of mine causing both air bags in my vehicle to deploy. The crash impact jammed the driver's door preventing it from opening, trapping me in the car with smoke pouring from under the hood. Initially the electric window would not open but finally did allowing me to extricate myself from the damaged vehicle.

3 Cruise Control problem

My accident/injuries because the defects/flaws of my car: brake systems, accelerator pedal, unintended acceleration, speed out of control, cruise control systems, electronic throttle systems. . . I have the car fixed, repairs sometimes (records at dealership). They replaced computer board. . . But still have a problems. . . My issues are about my Toyota Camry/model 2000 got accident/injuries on oct. 2004 because the car had many problems are: rough of cruise control systems, rough speed/rpm, gas pedal, brake, rough idle, suddenly accelerated - without pressing a gas pedal. I hit the car and my front bumper is almost felt off. It costs over a thousand dollars to replace but my injuries is no money to replace its back to normal, my auto insurance not paying my medical bills any more. . .

4 Cruise Control problem

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) my mother owned a 2000 Toyota Camry and she had two accidents in her car while in parking lots due to sudden acceleration. She did not tell the family at the time because she was 84 and thought she might lose her license. One accident caused $3,500 in damage. She has since passed away and I just found out about it. It has cruise control [xxx] . Our family still owns the car. I called a local dealer and got the national number for Toyota and they said that the car had a mechanical accelerator system. We had a mechanic check it out and he said it was a hybrid system, partly electronic control system. Toyota mislead us.

5 Cruise Control problem

While driving at 65 mph in cruise control consumer kept feeling an abnormal shift in the engine. Gears were shifting, but they were doing so roughly. Cruise control was disabled ,and the vehicle was taken to the dealer. He examined the engine, drove the vehicle, and claimed that the engine was working normally. Vehicle was getting very low gas mileage considering that this vehicle was suppose to get high gas mileage.

6 Cruise Control problem

After using cruise control on my 2000 Toyota Camry and coming to a stop, the accelerator pedal sticks. When you proceed forward, you have to depress the accelerator pedal hard, causing the car go forward at an unsafe speed.

1st Problem: 2007 Camry XLE Cruise Control...

  • Add to quote

After two weeks of enjoying my 2007 Camry XLE, I am now "enjoying" the opportunity to drive a 2005 model... Friday, on our first trip out on the highway, I noticed that the cruise control wouldn't come on. Nothing lit up on the dashboard when I pressed the on/off button and the speed wouldn't lock when I attempted to engage. I took the car into the dealership on Saturday. Waited about two hours before having to leave. When last I looked, the technician had taken the lower dash apart and had a manual open and appeared to be trying to trace down the wires. Fortunately, the dealership has a loaner program, so I do have a car. Unfortunately, by the time the shop closed on Saturday, they had not resolved the problem. The service manager told me they will have to contact Toyota Service Support for assistance. I hope Toyota Tech. Support is better than some of the companies I have to deal with... Part of the joys of owning a brand new model year... Any ideas as to what the problem might be? It doesn't appear to be as simple as loose wires... David

I cant give you any advise but I wanted to tell you that I'm sorry that you have to go through with that cause I just went trough a transmission issue with my 07' XLE and I know exactly what you are experiencing. My dealer did not have a loaner program but they do work with enterprise so they put my in a dodge magnum for almost 3 weeks. Good Luck and I hope it works out

Man, what is going on with these new 07's? I am holding off for now as I am reading to many negative posts about this new model. I was just about to pick on up this weekend. Hmmm, better safe than sorry, a few months won't hurt waiting.

Before everyone gets down on the new Camry... The cruise was not functioning but everything else was doing fine. I figure I paid for all the features to work, so I wanted to get this fixed sooner than later. I believe one of the issues that we will suffer from as new model owners will simply be the lack of repair experience in the shops. These guys are seeing the guts of the car for the first time. This is the first time they get to find out how all the switches and gadgets work with the "brains" of the computer. I have a feeling what the answer will end up being is that the brain is defective. The switch was checked and worked, the wiring appeared to be okay. But the brain controls all the interactions with the engine when running the car. I will say that the 2005 LE I am now driving is not in the same class as the 2007 XLE! David

2000 toyota camry cruise control not working

^lol

Almost 2k miles on my 07 SE and the cruise control works fine.

It seems that the SE's are not having any problems.Everything keeps working just right on mine and getting better MPG with every tank of gas.

Is this a XLE V6 you speak of?

Interesting. It's odd that the new Camry seems to be having more problems than other Toyotas. Still better than GM. This off topic....but I just bought a used 2003 Silverado ....wanted a Tundra but too expensive....and the day after I bought it the Check Engine light came on. Apparantly the gas cap was bad. Then all the lights on the radio quit. One good thing is that I bought it from a Toyota salesman that didn't know that GM's cruise control was on the Turn signal arm and I saved a couple hundred dollars....back to the point I'd rather have a Toyota than another brand.

glad everything is working fine
