Hunting & Fishing Programs for Veterans

Personalized Outdoor Experiences

The Veterans Afield Foundation (VAF) accomplishes its mission to assist in the reintegration and healing process of combat veterans, Gold Star families, and first responders by offering personalized hunting and fishing programs that make a difference at a critical moment in their lives.

Cohort sizes are small to encourage active participation, team bonding, and to ensure each participant gets the one-on-one support they need to begin the healing process. To learn more about our referral-based selection process, contact us.

Adaptive & Inclusive

We welcome participants of all abilities and experience. Adaptive equipment such as track chairs, retrofit electric side-by-side 4x4s, and eye-scope adapters help combat-wounded and physically disabled veterans and first responders access a wide range of outdoor activities.

VAF provides expert guides for each hunt and covers licenses, fees, food, lodging, non-local transportation, and meat processing fees (if applicable). We follow all local game laws and regulations.

man on atv with hunted moose

From black bear to moose to goose, we do it all. Each hunt offers the opportunity for connection and bonding. Small group sizes — four to six participants — nurture the beginnings of life-long friendships and build the foundation for an ongoing support network.

man in canoe holding fish he just caught

Come for the fish, leave with a sustaining hobby that will last a lifetime. Participants may build and finish custom rods or master the art of fly tying. No matter what, they’ll spend peaceful hours on the water, returning to camp with a mess of fish to clean for dinner.

VAF Outdoor Experiences

Whether veteran hunters, seasoned fishermen, or first-timers, we welcome all participants.

Many of our hunting trips and fishing occur annually, others are dependent upon funding. Our outdoor experiences are held all over the country, from Maine to Alaska to Texas. To learn more about our upcoming events or to sponsor a hunt, email us at [email protected] .

From Michelle Zawatski Lamela: Family Camp was AMAZING! Their motto is "you come as strangers, and leave as family"....and it couldn't be any more true. I bonded with strangers like they were family. I cried so freely because I knew these group of women get it. They listened with such kindness and understanding. It just felt natural to let everything out. John was quiet the the first 2 days. By day 3 he was participating in events. He talked to people. He connected with the other guys. He exchanged numbers. One man imparticular, gave John a book to read. He said it really helped him, and that he had 2. One was to give away to another soldier who it might help also. He gave it to John ❤️ John doesn't read too much, but he did start reading this book. He carved a handle for his cool knife. He had a blast kayaking. He even went TUBING WITH ME, AND DID A RIVER FLOAT!!!! Never thought I'd swim in the river, but this was a vacation of 1st, and trying new things. Our girls truly made the absolute best of this camping vacation. The mental break from life. Then, adding in super fun activities was just what their (our) souls needed. Allie and I got our 1st pedicures together ❤️ ....sorry ladies, I stuck with white lol (inside joke 😆). Kayaking on the Susquehanna was Allie's favorite hands down! She was off in her little world, living her best life. She loved relaxing in the cabin. The girls both shot a crossbow! Aubrey! Well she had the absolute time of her life! She made some really great friends. She swam her heart out in the pool. She floated down the river like a champ. She was tubing like a rockstar. She slid down the giant waterside like nobody's business. Played basketball with dad and the other kids. She make fox tails, firestarters, and balloon antlers. Family Camp is every kids dream, and we were blessed enough to be a choosen family for this incredible week. We can't thank everyone enough for what they have given our family. The team it took to put this all together for a few deserving families, is just unbelievable. To serve us, out of the kindness of their hearts, is inspiring. Hearing some stories of their struggles, while still serving us, makes you want to be a better person. I want to surround myself around uplifting people like them ❤️ The women who volunteered their time to teach is how to make bracelets, wreaths, wild flower bouquets, took us out for ladies day, graciously let us use their land for lake day and tubing......you all hold a special place in my heart. Family camp has been a life changing experience for us. There aren't enough "thank you's" to show our gratitude. We were honored to be a chosen family. It truly was a gift from God in our time of need 🙏 We did show up as strangers, but left as family. My tears the 2nd day in, was because I felt broken. I felt my family was breaking. My tears the last night was from hope, happiness, healing, and sadness. Sadness because I just made this new family, and we had to say good bye. Family Camp left such an impression. It will always be with us ❤️ Ps, if anyone has tubing or river float picture of our family, can you post them or send them to me in messenger. I didn't bring my phone for river day 🤦‍♀️ lol ... Bitterwater Outfitters offers a free range, fully guided California wild pig hunt with access to over 30 private hunting ranches and over 400,000 acres of prime California hunting ground. 7 Inexpensive Guided Hunting Trips with High Success Rates

hunting trips for groups

A few years ago, I noticed my two boys needed some toughening up. Too many trips to all-inclusives or amusement parks. I wanted to start them hunting, but I wanted them to enjoy the experience. I began taking them on guided hunting trips with high success rates to get them excited about it, and it worked. Now a few years later, they are both hooked.

The good news for you is I’ve spent many thousands of dollars trying different trips, and so I can recommend some good ones for you here, and many of them are relatively inexpensive.

I spent many thousands of dollars and tons of time hunting the places on this list so that I could recommend the best trips for you.

Whitetail Deer Hunting in Texas

Price: $2,995 includes whitetail deer and hog hunting for 5 days, AND all your meals and lodging. Not a bad deal!

Deer hunting is usually the first big game hunt that people go on, and whitetail deer in Texas have dense populations, making the shot opportunity very high in many areas.

I hunted at Arrowhead Outfitters in Cameron, Texas a few years ago and had a great experience. They are in a very rural area and hunt truly wild whitetail. They have basic feeders and blinds set up on a very large farm. The feeders are just enough to get the deer interested, but don’t overfeed them to where they become unnaturally large. These are wild animals on a real hunt.

The owner, Mark Tieden and his wife were very accommodating and made sure we had a positive experience.

Based on our experience hunting there, I would say the shot opportunity is about 40% per day you’re there. So if you stay for 3-5 days, you could pretty well count on having an opportunity at a nice whitetail. We didn’t see any monsters there, but we did see a number of respectable nice-looking whitetails that I’d be happy to shoot.

Shots are generally very short at less than 100 yards, so it’s a good opportunity for new or young shooters who will have buck fever when the moment comes.

Watch this video starting at 4:11 and you’ll see the whitetail deer hunt we did at Arrowhead Outfitters.

African Safari Trophy/Cull Hunt in South Africa

Price: About $4,450 includes flights, lodging, meals, 5 days of hunting, and you can hunt FIVE big game animals!

I know, an African safari? What happened to “inexpensive”? It certainly won’t be as cheap as a simple coyote hunt 45 minutes from home, but what if I told you that you could hunt in Africa for CHEAPER than a guided elk hunt in Idaho or Montana (which would fetch around $6k plus tag fees)?

I have twice hunted with [redacted – I know longer recommend this outfitter due to unfair business practices] in South Africa, and they were two of the best weeks of my entire life since I enjoyed them with my family. We did a combination of cull hunting and trophy hunting, so we took some smaller animals or females, and a few trophies, so as to reduce the cost of the trip.

Here’s what the hunt will likely cost:

  • $2,700 – Bargain package at [redacted] which includes meals and lodging, plus 5 animals
  • $1,200 – Flights to/from Johannesburg
  • $300 – Flights from Joberg to Port Elizabeth
  • $250 – One night hotel in Johannesburg, and help at airport with firearms

When you arrive at [redacted], you’ll be picked up at the airport by one of the owners or their staff. They will drive you to the lodge (several hours away). The lodges are basic by western standards, but quite comfortable. Everyone was very kind and accommodating. The food was great, cleaning service was responsive, and the PH’s (professional hunters) were a pleasure to be with for the week.

The animals in Africa are far more abundant in the United States. Having said that, you cannot guarantee you’ll get the species you’re after. This is a hunt and not a shoot. If you want a kudu and only a kudu, then you may or may not get your shot. Having said that, we had 18 animals on our package last time we went, and we came home with 17 of them. You will not have difficulty finding game to hunt.

The hunting area is absolutely gargantuan, so don’t expect this to be a shoot. You’ll be hunting. There is no shooting from vehicles or anything crazy like that. It takes a solid 35 minutes+ to drive across the entire hunting area. It’s big. Springbuck, wildebeest, blesbuck, and ostrich are pretty easy to hunt as they are abundant in large herds and you can wait under a bush in the plains. Kudu, zebra, gemsbuck, waterbuck, nyala, and other animals will be more of an active hiking hunt. I’d recommend a hunt that involves a little of both.

My only tips for hunting there are: (1) You absolutely need this chair . You’ll spend many hours on your butt on sharp rocks hiding under bushes waiting for some of the herds to move your way. Seriously, it’s mandatory. (2) Get a swagger bipod . The weeds/brush is just high enough that you can’t quite shoot off your backpack most of the time, so a bipod is perfect. I’d get the 9.75″ to 41.25″ version. The swagger is PERFECT for this hunt because it allows you to move quickly. Many african animals are herd animals, so you’ll need to adjust many times as you pick out which animal in the herd is the one for you to take. Trust me, that’s the bipod you want for this specific hunt.

One thing that could substantially increase the price of this hunt is if you choose to purchase taxidermy. If you don’t get taxidermy at all, then a 20% tax applies, but choosing expensive taxidermy obviously won’t come cheap. In this video , I shared how much I spent on taxidermy. The second time we went to hunt in Africa, we just left everything there for the locals and didn’t do any taxidermy to save money.

Coyote Hunting

Price : About $250 per day, plus lodging and food

Coyote hunts are fantastic because they usually require no tags, have no limits, and usually involve shooting several animals over a few days.

You can easily hunt coyotes yourself without a guide, but my guess is that many of the people searching for inexpensive hunts with high success rates are people who want some help learning to hunt successfully. I count myself in that group since I love learning from guides each time I go.

I have not personally hired a guide to hunt coyote, but there are many guided coyote hunts listed on bookyourhunt at extremely affordable rates that have good reviews.

Blacktail Deer Hunting on Kodiak Island, Alaska

Price: $2,475 includes five days of guided blacktail hunting, plus lodging and food. Just add flights.

Kodiak island is home to some of the largest bears on the planet, and the blacktail deer are giants too. Blacktail deer don’t grow massive antlers when compared to whitetail or mule deer, but they are very big-bodied. Best of all, tags are easy to acquire over-the-counter and you can get up to 3 tags per year.

The rut for Kodiak blacktail deer occurs in late October or early November, so prepare for weather and cold. As the saying goes, “Nothing leaves Kodiak dry.” You’ll need top quality gear to be prepared for the elements.

There are many ways to hunt blacktail deer. Some people get a plane in to a remote area and stay alone in a DIY hunt. Others hike with a guide. Most of the locals drive the road system in parts of the forest to spot them. In my case, I’m going on a boat-based hunt on Kodiak in just a couple months with Driftwood Wilderness Lodge . We drive the boat around the shoreline and use binoculars to spot the animals, then park the boat and stalk in.

Shot opportunity is very high, but so is the likelihood of encountering bad weather.

Feral Hog Hunting in Texas

Price: $1,050 includes three days of hunting, lodging, and all meals

Feral hogs are a destructive and invasive species currently wreaking havoc on many areas of Texas and other southern states. They populate quickly, and hunters so far have been unable to keep their populations in check.

I have hunted hogs a couple times, but my top recommendation would be to go with Mark Tieden at Arrowhead Outfitters (same guide I mentioned earlier for whitetail deer hunting). You can certainly do a combo hunt, but if you only hunt hogs, the price goes down.

My recommendation would be to bring night optics. You’ll unquestionably see hogs, but having good optics will dramatically improve your chances of success. I bought this sight for under $1k , and I’m not sure we would have shot our hogs without it. Many people hunt with just a spotlight, which does work for sure, but I was happy to have the night optic.

Baited Black Bear Hunting in Idaho

I live in St George Utah, but I grew up in the great state of Idaho. Idaho is one of the few states that allows bear-baiting. There is nothing as exciting as patiently waiting and then seeing a giant black beast sneak into a bait.

Bears have overpopulated in Idaho, making the cost of tags go down and Idaho even allows hunters to take two bears in some circumstances.

Black bear is a great quarry because it doesn’t require giant cartridges so it’s accessible for youth shooters and recoil-sensitive shooters, but is still a large animal with heavy bones.

Ox Ranch as a Family Vacation/Hunt

Price: About $3,750 total for a family of 5 to spend four days and have all your meals and lodging paid-for. Then just the trophy fee for an animal if you kill one. You’re not obligated to hunt. You could just go and enjoy the area and activities and see some cool animals with the family.

Ox Ranch is an absolutely incredible place. You’ll never experience any other hunting ranch quite like it. The owner created a tech company, Hostgator, and when he sold it, he used some of the money to create a hunting mecca in Texas.

I hunted at Ox Ranch with my family in early 2021. My family loved it. We rode ATV’s to see dinosaur footprints, swam in the pool until the wee hours of the morning, caught so many huge bass that our arms were tired, ate great food, stayed in a much better-than-anticipated family cabin, drove and fired a real tank (not kidding), fed a giraffe and kudu, and hunted.

Here’s what I’d say about the hunting at Ox Ranch. For many of the species, it’s a shoot and not a traditional hunt. There are blackbuck, elk, and dozens of other species walking around like a park. Most people shoot safari style from jeeps. The hog blind literally has security cameras all over the woods so you can spot the animals coming in.

For many hunters, this will be a major turn-off. For me, I have no interest in paying thousands of dollars to blast an elk from 100 feet away while sitting on top of a jeep. However, there are some species at Ox Ranch that will require more traditional fair-chase hunting techniques, and by no means have a 100% shot opportunity. I hunted aoudad at Ox Ranch and didn’t see a thing until day 4 with only an hour left in the trip. I was able to seal the deal on a great ram that I was proud of and worked hard for. There is definitely hard, real hunting at Ox Ranch, but you have to know what you’re signing up for and pick an experience that matches that.

I really enjoyed Ox Ranch because it was 70% family vacation, 30% a dad/boys hunting trip. We spent a day in San Antonio to go to Six Flags, then spent four days at Ox Ranch. We had tons of fun family activities all day to keep everyone down to our four-year-old entertained, but then in the mornings and evenings, I could put on camo and go hunting.

Don’t Forget About Tips

I don’t think anyone loves the way the tipping system works, but it’s even crazier in the hunting industry. Generally, about 20% of the hunt is expected as a tip. In the pricing above, I’ve included list prices for each of the hunts, but remember that after the hunt, there will be a fee for a tip, and possibly taxidermy if you choose to purchase it.

Are you an outfitter wanting to get recommended on Backfire? We only recommend hunts we actually have experienced ourselves. For the right hunt, I’m often willing to pay for me and my two sons’ travel if an outfitter will take us hunting in exchange for a recommendation. We love trying out new places to see if they are hunts we can recommend to the Backfire audience.

Hunting trips: United States

About hunting in North America

North America has some of the greatest hunting and some of the finest game animals found anywhere in the world. Hunting opportunities in North America are tremendous and vary greatly from whitetail hunting in Eastern hardwood forests to elk hunting in high alpine meadows of the Rocky Mountains to mule deer in the deserts of Sonora to muskox in the Canadian Arctic. The success of North America’s wildlife management is attributed to the “North American Model of Wildlife Conservation,” which relies on money generated by hunters, through licenses and a surcharge on the purchase of hunting gear, for the funding required to conserve and maintain game animals. Under this model, game animals in North America have made a tremendous comeback over the past century and thrive throughout the continent in record numbers today. Because hunting in North America is managed at the state and provincial level, hunting methods, traditions, ethics, and laws are different from one region to another. For example, black bears may be legally hunted over bait in some states and provinces, are hunted with dogs in others, and can be legally taken only by spot-and-stalk in others. It’s crucial to study the laws and regulations of the state or province you are hunting in. Wildlife agencies in each state and province generally have excellent, detailed websites where the information may be found.

hunting trips for groups

California Indians made this hidden valley a resting place during their annual migration to the Pacific Ocean. The Peachtree Ranch is approximately 50,000 acres. The Indians found plentiful numbers of game for hunting. Here were quantities of stone to form arrow heads for hunting.

Spanish Ranchos eventually gave way to the influence of the U. S. Dollar. The Peachtree Ranch became headquarters for cattle barons Miller and Lux. It was Miller and Lux who saved the Tule Elk from total extinction. You now have the opportunity to hunt these magnificent animals on a ranch where the very people that saved the elk, ran cattle.

During the late 1920’s the Peachtree Ranch became an escape for many famous cowboys of that era, like Tom Mix, Gene Autry and Will Rogers just to name a few.

Latino voting rights group calls for investigation after Texas authorities search homes

hunting trips for groups

Voting Texas Search LULAC National President Roman Palomares speaks at a news conference where he and other officials with LULAC held a news conference to respond to allegations by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, in San Antonio. (AP Photo/Eric Gay) (Eric Gay/AP)

AUSTIN, Texas — (AP) — A Latino voting rights group called Monday for a federal investigation after its volunteers said Texas authorities raided their homes and seized phones and computers as part of an investigation by the state's Republican attorney general into allegations of voter fraud.

No charges have been filed against any targets of the searches that took place last week in the San Antonio area. Attorney General Ken Paxton previously confirmed his office had conducted searches after a local prosecutor referred to his office “allegations of election fraud and vote harvesting” during the 2022 election.

Some volunteers whose homes were searched, including an 80-year-old woman who told her associates that agents were at her house for two hours and took medicine, along with her smartphone and watch, railed outside an attorney general's office in San Antonio against the searches.

“We feel like our votes are being suppressed,” Roman Palomares, national president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, said Monday. “We’re going to get to the bottom of it.”

The investigation is part of an Election Integrity Unit that Paxton formed in his office. Paxton's office did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment. The federal Justice Department declined to comment.

At least six members had their homes searched, Palomares said. They included Manuel Medina, a San Antonio political consultant, who claimed his home was searched for several hours while agents seized documents, computers and cellphones. Medina is the former head of the Bexar County Democratic Party and is working on the campaign of Democratic state House candidate Cecilia Castellano, whose home was also searched.

Nine officers also entered the home of volunteer Lidia Martinez, 80, who said she expressed confusion about why they were there.

“They sat me down and they started searching all my house, my store room, my garage, kitchen, everything,” Martinez said, and interrogated her about other members, including Medina.

The search warrant ordered officials to search any documents related to the election and to confiscate Martinez's devices.

“I'm not doing anything illegal,” Martinez said she told agents. “All I do is help the seniors."

Voter fraud is rare, typically occurs in isolated instances and is generally detected. An Associated Press investigation of the 2020 presidential election found fewer than 475 potential cases of voter fraud out of 25.5 million ballots cast in the six states where Trump and his allies disputed his loss to Democratic President Joe Biden.

How to Travel With Friends Without Coming Home as Enemies

Portrait of Andrea González-Ramírez

The horror story goes something like this: A friend group travels to Europe together. After picking out their rooms, there’s a small disagreement over how to keep the Airbnb clean. Then two people argue over splitting the bill at dinner. When the sweaty group waits in a two-hour-long line to climb the Eiffel Tower, one friend makes a bitchy comment toward another about not reserving tickets in advance. Tempers flare, more barbs are traded, and the drama engulfs the rest of the vacation. By the time everyone boards the flight home, no one is on speaking terms. In the end, the trip made it out of the group chat, but the group chat didn’t make it out of the trip.

Maybe you’ve read stories like these online and felt pity. Or maybe you’ve been there, wanting to do nothing but enjoy some pasta and wine in peace on your Italian getaway while your friends give the Real Housewives a run for their money after having one too many Aperol Spritzes. Here are 12 suggestions from the Cut staff that will help you keep the peace and make sure your friendships survive your next group trip.

1. Be honest about your budget and priorities.

It helps to be clear about what you prioritize spending money on versus what you don’t so that there are no surprises when you’re trying to pick out an Airbnb or make dinner reservations. I usually find myself saying something like, “I’d prefer to keep accommodations between $80 and $150 per night, because then I can spend more on good meals.” Or, as much as you can help it, just go on group trips with people who have similar spending habits. — Sarah Miller, photo editor

2. Stay in separate rooms.

I know it’s not affordable for everyone, especially if the location is a particularly high-end one. But I promise having a room to decompress in away from everyone is worth the money. — Brooke Marine, deputy culture editor

3. Book special outings in advance.

I always find it helpful to have a loose itinerary shared in a collaborative Google Doc before the trip. You’re going to be so cranky if you show up to the fancy spa that has no tickets available and a monthlong waiting list. You can always revise your daily schedule or improvise off of what you have, but some structure is key, or else you’re spending half of your vacation researching. — Cat Zhang, culture writer

4. If you bail last minute, pay for your share.

Group trips are a notorious pain to put together. Don’t string your friends along with a “maybe” for more than a week or two of the planning process. If you can’t give a straight answer, allow them to move forward coordinating logistics without you. And if, for any reason, you must pull out of a trip after deposits have been paid, you are on the hook for your share (unless someone else is ready and willing to replace you). I was once on a bachelorette trip where a work conflict came up last minute for one of the invitees. Not only did she honor her commitment to the shared costs of the weekend, but she asked one of the restaurants on our itinerary to send the group a seafood tower at dinner. Classy! — Catherine Thompson, features editor

5. Get an extra rental car.

Forcing the group to do everything together is a great way to fester resentment, and you won’t always have the power to pick a locale with maximum walkability or good public transport. Plus, you never know when that added flexibility will solve a hair-rising logistical crisis. Have you ever quelled a fight with a last-minute CVS run? I have. — Danielle Cohen, writer

6. Don’t let friends arrive hours before the Airbnb is available.

At minimum, everyone should know the address of where you’re staying and check-in and checkout times before the trip starts. — Trupti Rami, assistant managing editor, digital

7. Talk through what you’re cool with and what’s out of the question.

Are people more inclined toward a structured schedule that starts at 7 a.m., or do they plan to get up at their leisure and wing the day? Are your friends down to party until dawn, or do they want to call it a night by 10 p.m.? Setting schedule expectations will help you plan the trip and avoid conflict later on. The same goes for boundaries, especially if you’re mixing friends from different parts of your life. Better to know what makes people uncomfortable ahead of time than have to mediate mid-trip, when Friend A is upset that there’s a half-naked rando walking around the Airbnb after hooking up with Friend B. — Andrea González-Ramírez, senior writer

8. No more than two people on Google Maps at once.

Any adventure only requires one guide and someone to check them in case they’re not great at directions (this is a public apology for whenever I’ve made my friends walk a block the wrong way). If more than two people are looking at the map, as a group we’ll spend too much time standing in the same place, create a conflict where everyone thinks they’re right, and look like big-time tourists. This rule is even more important in a driving scenario. Only the passenger should be allowed to give directions in that case (and control the aux), while people in the back seat relax and fully immerse themselves in the landscape. — Maridelis Morales Rosado, photo editor

9. Stay on top of shared bills.

Track expenses and who owes what on Splitwise . — Bindu Bansinath, writer

10. Block out alone time.

Some people need downtime to recharge or nap. Others may want to work out or read a book. Some may just want to go on a little solo walk. If there are couples on the trip, maybe they want to have sex, assuming the rooming situation allows! It’s everyone’s vacation, so everyone should get independent time to use as they wish. — Sasha Mutchnik, senior social editor

11. Break out a game when the going gets tough.

Stay present and enjoy where you’re at, even if things don’t go as planned — because they usually won’t. If there are any unexpected delays or long lines to wait in, I volunteer my phone for a few rounds of the game Heads Up! . It’s the best way to make the time pass, it’s fun, and it brings everyone together. — Katja Vujić, writer

12. You don’t have to get along with everyone …

… But you do have to be respectful. Disagreements will happen. When they do, remember you only have control over your own actions and reactions. Keep it light, keep it moving. —T.R.
