Bull Rock, County Cork

When it comes to dramatic boat trips, it doesn’t get more epic than a journey with Dursey Boat Trips out to Bull Rock, an incredible rock formation in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of County Cork.  Setting off from the rugged Beara Peninsula, the trip passes the cliffs at Dursey Island before heading to Cow Rock and finally to Bull, home to one of Ireland’s largest gannet colonies. This craggy island is pure drama, with a natural tunnel that runs right through its centre, a lighthouse perched on top, and gannets swirling around. Nature-lovers should watch out for whales, dolphins, basking sharks and seals along the way.

Kinsale, County Cork

It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful place than Kinsale Harbour on a sunny day – the jingle of bobbing boats, the shimmer of the water and the leafy hills that cradle it give it an idyllic feel. And there’s no better way to explore this stretch of coastline than with Kinsale Wellness on Water. Captain Brian Roberts is a chatty and hospitable host who will bring you on a private tour around the harbour with his first mate, Alfie the dog. It’s a relaxing, enjoyable and informative experience with fun activities like line fishing and pulling lobster pots. Each cruise is private, family-friendly and can cater for up to eight people.

Dingle, County Kerry

Hold on to your seats because this boat trip to the Blasket Islands in County Kerry  is fun, fast-paced and adrenaline-fuelled. After heading out of Dingle Harbour, the tour weaves and tucks in and out of the caves and cliffs along the coast, before heading at high speed to the waters surrounding the spellbinding Great Blasket Island. Along the way, you might spot whales and dolphins. While at the island itself, you’ll discover “the grey seal capital of Ireland”, with hundreds of seals lolling on the island’s beach and playing in the water.

Skellig Michael, County Kerry

Skellig Island Tours runs trips to Skellig Michael , a craggy island that rises dramatically from the swirling waters of the Atlantic Ocean. These tours are hugely popular in the summer months and with good reason. Clew Bay, County Mayo

Beautiful Clew Bay in County Mayo  is a special spot. Guarded by Clare Island and overlooked by Croagh Patrick,  it boasts around 100 islands, although local folklore claims there are 365 – one for every day of the year. Jump on a boat trip with Westport Cruises at Westport Harbour and you’ll be brought through this idyllic bay, past an island bought by John Lennon, as well as a seal colony and Inishgort Lighthouse, where the bay opens up into the Atlantic Ocean.

Killary Harbour, County Galway

Racing skies, silvery-blue waters and green mountains etched with grey rock that fold into one another make Killary Harbour one of the most beautiful spots along the Wild Atlantic Way. And the best way to experience it? From the water. The Killary Harbour Boat Tour sails through this majestic glacial fjord allowing you to experience the awe-inspiring drama of the Twelve Bens and Mamturk Mountains, as well as the Mweelrea massif, Connemara’s  highest mountains.

Roundstone Harbour, County Galway

Looking for a more private experience? This great food tour by Roundstone Bay and Island in the gorgeous village of Roundstone in County Galway  could be just the ticket. Boutique picnics, deserted islands, shimmering waters and lovely beaches await on bespoke tours, with a friendly and informative guide who will tell you all about the area’s history, culture and wildlife. This tour works for up to five people, but there are other larger group experiences including a Guinness and Oyster Experience boat tour, a Jameson Whiskey and Oyster Experience and an Eco Boat Tour to choose from.

Cliffs of Moher, County Clare

Eager visitors flock to the Cliffs of Moher  to enjoy the epic views from the tops of these vertiginous sea cliffs, but for a different perspective, why not see them from the water? Rising majestically from the waves to a height of over 214 metres, the cliffs really are at their best from this angle. This tour by the Doolin Ferry Co. brings you to see O’Brien’s Tower at the highest point of the cliffs, as well as the Great Sea Stack and the sea cave that was featured in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince .

Lough Gill, County Sligo

Lying just over 10km east of Sligo town, Lough Gill is an under-the-radar destination basking in beauty. Situated between County Sligo  and County Leitrim  and the setting for WB Yeats’s famous poem, The Lake Island of Innisfree, the lough is surrounded by woodland and boasts about 20 islands, all of which are uninhabited. The boat tours depart from the super-scenic 17th-century Parke’s Castle (worth a visit itself) and Doorly Park, and feature detailed and interesting commentary covering the history, wildlife and myths and legends about the lough.

Slieve League Cliffs, County Donegal

As with the cliffs of Moher, the Slieve League Cliffs in Donegal  are a truly amazing sight by water. I hear you ask “what is the Wild Atlantic Way?” The Wild Atlantic way is actual the longest touring route in the world. The route takes in the whole west coast of Ireland. It spans from Malin head in Donegal head to Kinsale in Cork. It bares similarities to the Garden Route in South Africa; The great ocean road in Australia and the pacific highway in the US. But the wild Atlantic way is the longest and most spectacular. The touring route is a massive 2500km.

As you can see from the above points there are many reasons to visit the Wild Atlantic Way with something for everyone. However in today post I’m going to concentrate on the Iveragh Peninsula, Portmagee in particular and a boat tour to Skellig Michael

The Iveragh Peninsula

Yes it is here in Iveragh that you will find all that is great about the wild Atlantic way. I may be a little biased with this opinion :) but I challenge you to come and explore my statement and I have no doubt we will be of the one mind after your visit.

The Iveragh Peninsula has the best the country has to offer, it has the most spectacular mountains, beaches, rivers, lakes and golf courses. Allied with this it has just been made a Dark Sky Reserve, the only internationally recognized gold tier reserve in the northern hemisphere. So you can only imagine our night skies here in the southwest.

However I feel the jewel in the Iveragh crown is the mystical Skellig Islands and you simply have to take a boat tour to experience this natural wonder your self.

Skellig Michael boat tours

We here at Skellig Michael Cruises have to speak of our boat tour to Skellig Michael. Skellig Michael is a designated this UNESCO World heritage site. It received this accolade in 1996 and this is what UNESCO had to say. “The Committee decided to inscribe the nominated property on the basis of cultural criteria (iii) and (iv) considering that the site is of   outstanding universal value   being an exceptional, and in many respects unique example of an early religious settlement deliberately sited on a pyramidal rock in the ocean, preserved because of a remarkable environment. It illustrates,   as no other site can , the extremes of a Christian monasticism characterizing much of North Africa, the Near East and Europe.”

Situated on the Wild Atlantic Way Portmagee is our home here at Skellig Michael cruises and where we operate our boat tours to the Skellig Islands. Portmagee itself is a beautiful fishing village;

An interesting fact about Portmagee was once a haven for smugglers and pirates. The village is named after one of the most notorious smugglers of the 18th century, Captain Theobald Magee.

In 2012 Portmagee was awarded Irelands top tourism town, which speaks for itself. We have two outstanding bars where you can sample some delicious food and listen to Irish traditional music. We also have a wonderful restaurant cafes and shops. Allied with this we have some spectacular view points and the Skellig experience centre, which is only over the bridge and our latest edition to Portmagee is Skellig Haven Language School just a few hundred meters from the village.

So I would encourage you to book your trip to explore the Wild Atlantic Way and keep in mind that is too long and too much to do in one go if you truly want to experience correctly. I would advise you to come to Portmagee first and enjoy the village and all it has to offer you. Also of course I would say to you book your boat tour to Skellig Michael.

There’s something about the way the sun reflects off the wild Irish grass; wet with sea dew; it glows with a neon vibrancy that is pure Irish green. The long and rugged coast winds its way around the west coast of Ireland, passing jaw-dropping cliff views, ruined castles, gorgeous nature park, colorful little towns, and cozy local pubs with live trad music. The Wild Atlantic Way embodies quintessential Ireland around every corner and down every path. I could barely click my finger fast enough to capture all these photos to inspire you to visit the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland. Every photograph transports me back to this special place in Ireland, where I felt wild, free, and at home. I hope these photos of authentic Ireland encourage you to go see the magical Irish green with your own eyes.

Lush Killarney National Park has tumbling waterfalls and sweeping viewpoints. Extend your Wild Atlantic Way road trip with a drive around Muckross Lake, or get out of the car to stretch your legs with kilometers of scenic walking trails. Take time to experience the culture and history of Killarney by touring Ross Castle, or exploring Muckross Abbey with the historic graveyards and ancient Yule Tree.

The rugged Cliffs of Moher light up when the sun peeks out from behind the clouds. Visiting the cliffs for sunrise and sunset is a must to see how the light changes, but even with a bit of rain, the cliffs are striking. To avoid the crowds, start at the Cliff’s Walking Trail and continue down past the visitor’s center to watch the scenery unfold before your very eyes.

Sprinkled along the Wild Atlantic Way are hidden secrets only known to the locals from the county . If you slow down and take your time to get off the beaten path, you’ll be rewarded with ancient stone circles tucked away in a remote sheep pasture – looking out to sea; a secluded nature park on the Ring of Beara with a crashing waterfall and grazing sheep below; ruined castles without another soul in sight. Travel on the shoulder season, take it nice and slow and leave plenty of time to take stunning photographs along the Irish West Coast.

The Slea Head drive around the Dingle Peninsula is a truly magical place. With cliffs lower than Moher, you get an intimate look at the crashing waves as sea spray kisses your face, and the wind whips your hair. Break up the larger than life scenery with cultural experiences like sheepdog demonstrations with a real Irish farmer and historic sites like cross markers, museums, and beehive huts.

One of the most surprising things about traveling the Wild Atlantic Way across Ireland was the colorful houses and bright seaside towns. Vivid pinks, blues, yellows, and greens light up the dark and rainy Irish days. The colorful towns of Kinsale, Allihies, and Sneem have picture-perfect flower beds, bright window sills, and wildly painted front doors. Spend plenty of time walking the side streets before ducking into a cozy pub.

I’ve been to Ireland and I’ve heard so much about the Cliffs of Moher. Unfortunately I’ve not been to the coast yet. The ancient stone circles look pretty cool, interesting that it’s off the beaten track. All of your pictures look superb. Good you managed to finish it off with a Guinness too!

It was really cool the stone circles were just hidden in farmer’s fields with sheep grazing. I hope you make it back to see these amazing views along the Wild Atlantic Way.

We had just a taste of Ireland this year. And this view of the Wild Atlantic Way definitely gave us many more reasons to want to return. Killarney Park is high on our list of places to see. And we would definitely tour Ross Castle. Those views along the Dingle Peninsula are stunning. And with all that sunshine, it hardly looks like the Ireland that so many people think of. Those colourful houses are a photographers dream! We are definitely inspired to come back to Ireland.

I know we had great weather and it was shoulder seasons, so hardly any tourists were around either. It is well worth going back to see these stunning landscapes I photographed along the way.

I did the Wild Atlantic Way two years ago and loved it. The scenery us amazing and I love the rugged coastline, castles, abbeys and of course, the towns. This is where the Irish culture is for me. Love looking at your photos and they sure did bring back some amazing memories. :)

It really was quintessential Ireland, and I just loved capturing it all in all in photographs. The Wild Atlantic Way is one of the best areas in Europe.

Wow, you took some incredible photos here. I regret not staying on longer when we were last in Ireland. Slea Head and the Dingle Peninsula are both stunning, and I love your photos of the colorful houses too. I totally agree about the food; it was delicious!

I know the food was so surprising. I guess you will just have to go back to see all these dreamy landscapes of Ireland and take your own photos!

While the colourful houses make the whole area lively!, the coastal walk provides a completely different feeling. I am always afraid of walking along the coast there because of the dangerous cliff edge. But if there is a paved way like in one of your pictures, I would also like to have a walk. Nice pictures!

OMG! Each of them is stunning! Loved the castle photography a lot! I was wishing to be in one of those pictures. Then I saw the colorful facades and couldn’t decide which were better. This post was a great visual treat!

Totally dreamy pics. From the castles to the wild rocks and the green meadows and even a colorful town – what a variety. I would love to get here and explore it myself. It has always been on my wanderlist but your pictures just pushed it much higher. Just amazing photos.

On all my visits to Ireland, I’ve only been to Dublin, I really need to branch out to see the rest of the country especial the Wild Atlantic Way, it’s simply gorgeous. Those waterfalls at Killarney National park would be our first stop, right after the Cliffs of Moher. Those towns look adorable, love the bright, vibrant colors of the houses.

I do love the Cliffs of Moher, but I agree with you that this area is even better if you take it slowly and explore at a slow pace, spotting castles and ancient churches along the way. The photos you took of the coast line captured it perfectly, it’s wild, rugged and pretty.

I always love those seaside towns with their bright colours. All of this makes me crave a good pub with a fire.

Join us for a fully narrated 15-mile scenic cruise that explores the wildlife of Beaufort. On calm, sun-kissed waters, our experienced local captain travels down Taylor’s Creek looking for horses on the Rachel Carson Reserve, where they roam freely in their natural environment.

Then, you cruise through scenic waterways on past Radio Island, Fort Macon, Morehead City State Port and bustling waterfront, Phillips Island, Michael J. Smith Airport, and then back to Beaufort, all while enjoying the panoramic views. See more on this cruise than any other cruises in the area!

Seabourn in the Kimberley

The Kimberley is Australia's hottest destination right now, and Seabourn 's ultra-luxe Seabourn Pursuit — which debuts there in June — is the best way to see it in style. The 10-night Waterfalls and Wandjinas tour from Broome to Darwin winds through a wilderness that is almost the size of California but home to fewer than 40,000 people.

Natural wonders abound in this wild frontier etched with rivers, waterfalls, tidal creeks, reefs and white sand beaches — many only accessible by boat. On guided tours, witness ancient rock art, dive into Western Australia's rich pearling history and experience Indigenous culture firsthand with a traditional face-painting ceremony.

On board the 264-passenger Seabourn Pursuit is a wellness spa, 24-hour room service (hello caviar) and the Bow Lounge, which features interactive navigation maps and front-row seats to saltwater crocodiles and the magnificent red sandstone gorges that date back 1.8 billion years. Expeditions are equally mind-blowing, as the Zodiac boats thread through the narrow gap of Horizontal Falls or zip out as the tide turns so guests can see Montgomery Reef surface magically from the sea.

UnCruise Adventures in Hawaii

Nothing says aloha like island hopping in Hawaii aboard a 36-guest boutique yacht. UnCruise Adventures ' seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes expedition is one for nature lovers, with opportunities to snorkel with manta rays, swim with sea turtles, float above a coral garden bright with neon fish or peer into the crater of an active volcano.

Hawaiian culture is also in the spotlight. With stops at four islands — Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii (the Big Island) — you'll have ample time to explore. Cycle local villages, chase waterfalls, hike rainforests alive with birdsong or learn to make poi, Hawaii's beloved dish of mashed taro.

On board Safari Explorer are kayaks, paddleboards and a skiff to explore the dramatic coastline up close. Lounging on the ship's three decks has its own reward. You might spot cavorting dolphins or a humpback whale or two popping out of the sea to wave a fin hello.

Lindblad Expeditions in Baja Mexico

Cruise the Sea of Cortez with Lindblad Expeditions, and you'll soon discover the magic of Baja Mexico from a team with more than 30 years of experience sailing this dazzling 2,500-mile coastline.

Itineraries of six to 15 days dive into this biodiverse landscape — described by Jacques Cousteau as nature's aquarium. Get up close to sea lions, rays, big fish and dolphins. Shore landings are no less awesome, hiking desert arroyos spiked with cactuses and islands clamorous with sea lions and squawking seabirds.

Whale watching is one of Baja's biggest draws, the sparkling waters filled with the spray and song of humpbacks, orcas and the rare blue whale. This is where California gray whales come to breed and huge whale sharks glide through shimmering seas. These encounters are memorable, but Lindblad goes one step further, with expeditions in local panga boats for up-close encounters with the gentle mamas and their calves.

Silversea Cruises in the Galapagos

The Galapagos is the ultimate in adventure travel. This remote archipelago of 19 islands is carpeted with an astonishing 9,000 species of flora and fauna, many not found anywhere else in the world. It's here that Charles Darwin formulated his theory of evolution. More than 150 years later, not much has changed, except perhaps the mode of transport.

Cue Silversea Cruises ' Silver Origin, a luxe 50-suite ship with butler service and a decidedly Ecuadorian flavor found in the ship's food, team of Ecuadorian national expert guides and, of course, excursions. Off-ship expeditions will have you hiking ancient lava flows, snorkeling with huge fish and island hopping through primordial landscapes flush with blue- and red-footed boobies, sea lions and giant tortoises.

Drama is everywhere in the Galapagos — and not just the animal kind. Thirteen of the 21 volcanoes in the archipelago are active. With a little luck, your wilderness outing might include dress circle views of a volcano's billowing peak.

Aqua Expeditions in Raja Ampat

Spend a week sailing Indonesia's Raja Ampat with Aqua Expeditions, and you could be forgiven for thinking you'd found paradise. Galaxies of karst islands drift above coral reefs alive with darting fish, pygmy seahorses, black-tipped reef sharks, octopuses and manta rays. The diving and snorkeling are out of this world.

So, too, is life on board Aqua Blu, a 30-passenger superyacht replete with a Jacuzzi, an outdoor barbeque and a Balinese spa. The former HMS Beagle is barefoot luxury at its best with a no-shoes policy for the entire seven-night cruise.

On board are diving and snorkeling gear, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, so you can explore this far-flung Southeast Asian archipelago at your own pace. On landings, unearth hidden lagoons and beaches, and go in search of the rare crimson bird of paradise. One thing is certain: Dropping anchor anywhere in this pristine archipelago of 1,500 islands promises nature writ large.

Aurora Expeditions in Costa Rica and the Panama Canal

Slow-moving three-toed sloths, howler monkeys, toucans and crimson macaws are just some of the wonders of Costa Rica, a nation that lives and breathes sustainability. The newest cruise from eco-minded Aurora Expeditions tours the Central American country's Pacific coastline, diving into the heart of its greenest parks and wildlife reserves, including the small but popular Manuel Antonio National Park.

Panama is another highlight of this 10-night sailing (with a one-night pre-cruise stay in San Jose, Costa Rica). There are stops in the Pearl Islands and a visit to the Indigenous Indian tribes of Embera, a village deep in the rainforest. Miraflores Visitor Center — with the history of making the canal — is also fascinating.

It's, of course, a warmup for the main event — a daylight crossing of the 51-mile engineering marvel that connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Captain Cook Cruises in Fiji

Fiji's reputation for being one of the friendliest nations now extends to its cruise offerings, as it's the setting for the friendliest expedition ship, the 114-passenger MS Caledonian Sky. This recent addition to the Captain Cook Cruises fleet is crewed by locals, which means one thing — service with ebullient smiles and no end of welcoming bulas, the Fijian greeting for hello.

The seven-night Southern Lau itinerary takes in an archipelago, far from the high-end island resorts and "flop and drop'' beach holidays of more popular Denarau and Viti Levu. Washington State’s largest city, it’s home to a large tech industry, with Microsoft and Amazon headquartered in its metropolitan area. The futuristic Space Needle, a 1962 World’s Fair legacy, is its most iconic landmark.

One look at lovely Sitka and you'll know why Alexander Baranof, governor of the Russian American Company, decided to build his "castle" here. With views of island-studded waters and stately spruce forests reaching to the water's edge, Sitka is considered Alaska's most beautiful seaside town. Sitka's past is a unique blend of Tlingit culture and Russian history. Our historic and scenic community is situated on Baranof Island, nestled between forested mountains and the great Pacific Ocean, on the outer waters of Alaska's Inside Passage. Sitka offers a combination of Native culture, Russian history, and Alaskan wilderness which will provide a diverse and unequaled experience. Wildlife adds to Sitka's natural beauty. Our mild climate, rich habitat and relatively low human population make Sitka one of the best places to view wildlife. Nearby waters are a popular feeding ground for humpback whales in the late fall and early spring. The City of Skagway is geographically the largest city in Alaska with 455 square land miles. Victoria, capital of British Columbia, sits on the craggy southern end of Vancouver Island. With abundant parkland, it’s known for outdoor activities. The city's British colonial past shows in its Victorian architecture, including stately Craigdarroch Castle mansion. Butchart Gardens, with 55 acres of vivid floral displays, plus statuary, water features and a carousel, is one of many formal gardens in the city.
