Fleabag in Welsh in local tour

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

Leah Gaffey is "Fleabag" in the Welsh adpatation of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's award-winning show

Theatr Clwyd's decision to restage Phoebe Waller-Bridge's extraordinary one-woman comedy Fleabag in Welsh is gaining pace.

Bridge’s award-winning play (-turned-TV-series) won BAFTAs, Emmys and a Golden Globe and shot Bridge into the playwriting stratosphere. Theatr Clwyd’s production, directed by Sara Lloyd, has been adapted by acclaimed Welsh writer Branwen Davies, set in north Wales and in the Welsh language, which brings a different feel to the whole exercise. So much so that the production is now to tour Wales prior to its closing run at Theatr Clwyd.

Actress Leah Gaffey will perform the title (indeed only) role and the tour now opens with a performance at the National Eisteddfod (Aug 8-10), before visits to Torch Theatre, Pembrokeshire (August 29); Theatr Soar, Merthyr Tydfil (August 30); Neuadd Dwyfor Arts Centre in Pwllheli (September 2); Sherman Theatre, Cardiff (September 5-8); Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan (September 12); Pontio Bangor (September 15-16); Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon (September 20), Aberystwyth Arts Centre (September 22-23), ending at Theatr Clwyd from September 27-30.

Cycling race forced to change route due to Wales's default 20mph limit

The planned route had to change over fears support vehicles would be unable to keep up with bicycles without breaking the default 20mph speed restrictions. The Welsh government predicts the speed limit cut will save up to 100 lives in the first decade.

A cycling race has been forced to change its route due to the default 20mph speed limit in Wales.

The Junior Tour of Wales , which gets under way on Friday, will welcome more than a hundred cyclists.

Organisers say some riders could even feature in future Tours de France or Olympic Games .

But the planned route for this year's race has had to be changed over fears support vehicles would not be able to keep up with the bicycles without speeding.

The default speed limit in Wales's built-up areas was reduced to 20mph last September . The Welsh government predicts it will save up to 100 lives and 20,000 casualties in the first decade.

But it faced significant opposition , including a record-breaking petition.

The Welsh government has since announced a review, with some roads expected to change back to 30mph as soon as next month.

'Impact on cycle racing'

Race organiser Richard Hopkins told Sky News that support vehicles being unable to keep up causes "a safety problem".

The decision was made three weeks ago, when plans to temporarily vary the speed limit on the race route fell through.

"We'd known ever since the 20mph came in that there was going to be an impact on cycle racing," he said.

"And to be fair, the Welsh government and Welsh Cycling knew that as well and they started responding very early on and started putting a plan together that would give us a legal speed limit change that was temporary and would literally be enforced for the duration of the bike race."

While the speed variation was not possible for this year's race, Mr Hopkins hopes it will be possible by next year.

"I think one of the problems with it this year is it's a very new thing for [the Welsh government] in legal terms to draft a traffic order that varies the speed limit upwards," he added.

"Because normally, this kind of thing, it's what they use in road works when the speed limit drops."

'Knock-on effect'

The default speed limit "potentially impacts every bike race" in the country, according to Mr Hopkins.

"The specific problem the Junior Tour has is that this is the longest and most complex race held in Wales on an annual basis and therefore by definition the longer your route is, the more you're likely to be impacted," he added.

"We fully accept that 20mph has some safety benefits. The issue we have here, and that they accepted, is that there's a knock-on effect for cycle racing and cycle racing is also something the Welsh government wants to support."

A Welsh government spokesperson said the priority for any race was to ensure its safety for "all participants and other road users".

"We have worked with the race organisers to develop various options to ensure the race can go ahead," they added.

Beicio Cymru, cycling's governing body in Wales, said the default limit had "benefitted certain aspects of cycling" but acknowledged it had "impacted road racing".

Solutions were unable to be implemented in time for this year's race "due to the complexity of the required adjustments".

People Can't Get Enough Of These Clips Of Fleabag Stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge And Andrew Scott At The Eras Tour

V ideos of Fleabag actors Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Andrew Scott enjoying Taylor Swift’s concert in London over the weekend are being shared far and wide.

However, there’s one clip in particular that’s really caught people’s attention.

The former co-stars were among the numerous celebrities spotted at Taylor’s first London dates on her ongoing Eras tour, with Paul McCartney, Tom Cruise, Cate Blanchett, Nicola Coughlan, Zawe Ashton, Hugh Grant, Keir Starmer and even Prince William also in the audience of the sold-out shows.

Footage taken from Sunday night’s gig shows Andrew and Phoebe enjoying themselves in the VIP tent during Taylor’s rendition of Love Story, with the Indiana Jones star seen enthusiastically waving her hands in the air and dancing to the song.

Our favourite clip from the night, though, came when Andrew and Phoebe apparently thought they’d pop to the bar before the 1989 section – only to be greeted by those iconic opening bars of Style.

And what happened next was extremely relatable, with the clip already racking up half a million views on X (formerly Twitter)…

Later in the set, the duo were also seen dancing to Taylor’s performance of Shake It Off.

Last month, Andrew spoke about his friendship with the 14-time Grammy winner , following the release of her latest album The Tortured Poets Department .

“ Taylor’s new album is sensational! I texted her yesterday to say how amazing it is,” he said. “I think she is just a force of nature, just an extraordinary human, and this album is really, really amazing.”

Interestingly, when Taylor first announced the name of her most recent album, many fans thought it could have been inspired by a group chat that her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn was in with both Andrew and Paul Mescal.

Exeter eye Jenkins replacement

Wales second-row Dafydd Jenkins is 'touch and go' for the autumn internationals as his club Exeter Chiefs search for a short-term replacement for the injured lock.

Jenkins, who captained Wales in this year's Six Nations , has had surgery to correct a knee and shoulder issue which will rule him out of the start of the season.

Exeter start their Gallagher Premiership campaign against Leicester Tigers on September 21, with the Devon club light on locks following the departures of Jonny Gray, Matt Postlethwaite and Aidon Davis this summer.

Speaking at a pre-season media event, Exeter director of rugby Rob Baxter told our sister website, DevonLive , that the 21-year-old would be touch and go for the autumn, although he did not rule it out.

He also added that Jenkins' Wales team-mate and second-row partner in Australia this summer, Christ Tshiunza, was carrying a slight knock - although that is less serious.

“We're looking to bring in a lock, because obviously Dafydd is out," said Baxter. "We know now Daf is going to be out for a little while and Christ Tshiunza also has got a little bit of a sore shoulder but that now looks probably less worrying than we thought.

"That leaves us a little bit light in the back five, because we've trimmed our squad numbers a bit as well, so we're looking at a lock. We're always looking at the young lads coming through earning contracts.

"You know, a great example is fly-half Ben Coen," he added. "He has come through our Academy, took our advice to kind of continue his career at Exeter University.

"He wanted to go to uni so that was great but he obviously worked really hard there, broke through into their BUCs team, broke through into the England U20s team, goes and wins the World Cup for the U20s this summer and is now a contracted player at Exeter Chiefs.

"So those kind of things are happening all the time. We've never been a team that's like, that's the squad, it's settled. Recruitment is ongoing every day of the year really; and we'll continue to work that way."

Wales' autumn matches to be free-to-air

Wales' 2024 Autumn Nations fixtures will be shown on free-to-air TV with S4C set to broadcast all three games later this year.

The matches will be available to watch with Welsh language commentary live on S4C, while they can also be streamed via S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer.

Warren Gatland's side kick off their autumn campaign at home to Fiji on November 10 as they look for their first Test match win since last year's World Cup. They then face Australia on November 17 before taking on South Africa six days later, with all three fixtures taking place at the Prinicpality Stadium.

S4C will be co-broadcasting the games alongside TNT Sports and streaming platform discovery+, after they secured the UK rights to the Autumn Nations tournament back in April.

Graham Davies, S4C’s Head of Sport, said: “It’s great to be able to announce that the Wales men’s Autumn Nation Series will be live on S4C for the next two years, showing that S4C is the Home of Welsh Sport.

“We know how important Welsh rugby, and the international games, are to our audiences, and we are proud to be working in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery. We’re grateful to have the opportunity to offer these games for free, in Welsh, on S4C.”

Trojan Paillot, SVP of sports rights acquisitions and syndications at Warner Bros. Discovery Sports Europe, added: “For the first time, TNT Sports will show all 21 games from the Autumn Nations Series live on its platforms this November, which, along with broadcasting every single match from the Gallagher Premiership, ensures we remain the go-to destination for rugby fans wanting to watch the most exciting and compelling matches global rugby has to offer.

“Co-broadcasting the Welsh national team fixtures against Fiji, Australia and South Africa alongside an outstanding partner such as S4C matches our ambition to making those three internationals as widely available as possible to viewers in Wales.”

Lomu documentary greenlit

New Zealand rugby superstar Jonah Lomu is set to be immortalised in a new feature documentary.

The late All Black, who died suddenly at the age of 40 in 2015, will be the subject of Lomu , which is set for release in 2025. It is being co-directed by Gavin Fitzgerald, who has worked on documentaries on Conor McGregor and Liam Gallagher, and Tongan-New Zealander Vea Mafile’o.

The documentary will focus on Lomu's remarkable career, which saw him rise from humble origins to become rugby's first global superstar, setting the World Cup try-scoring record and scoring 37 tries in 63 international appearances. He finished as a runner up at the 1995 World Cup and represented the likes of the Blues, Chiefs and Hurricanes at club level, as well as his famous season-long spell with Cardiff .

It will also explore his personal struggles, including his health battles, having been diagnosed with a serious kidney disorder in 1995.

The documentary will feature contributions from Lomu's family and former teammates, including former New Zealand captain Sean Fitzpatrick.

“Jonah, quite simply, changed the game of rugby forever," said Fitzpatrick after the documentary was given the go-ahead. "His influence can still be felt today, and that is why it is so important to celebrate his legacy."

Meanwhile, Lomu's mother Hepi added: “As a family, we are happy to work with this team who are committed to celebrating our son.”

Marler in England fitness race

By Duncan Bech, PA England Rugby Correspondent

Joe Marler will miss the start of Harlequins' season with the broken foot sustained during England's summer tour to place doubt over his availability for the autumn.

Marler limped off 17 minutes into the 16-15 defeat by New Zealand in Dunedin on July 6 and was replaced by his Quins teammate Finn Baxter before being ruled out of the second Test.

The veteran prop was wearing a boot to protect his left foot at the club's open training session at the Stoop on Wednesday afternoon and head coach Danny Wilson revealed he will be unavailable until October.

"It's going to be a 12-14 week injury, it's not a 12-weeker where he can come back in nine. It's an injury that will take that amount of time," Wilson said. "That at the moment hasn't changed, but I need to get to the bottom of it from today's assessment because he's had a bit more assessment today."

If the worst-case scenario unfolds, Marler will sit out the opening four rounds of the Gallagher Premiership, at which point Steve Borthwick will be naming England's squad for their pre-autumn training camp in Girona.

It would leave the 34-year-old with little time to prove he is ready for international rugby ahead of the All Blacks' visit to Twickenham on November 2.
