Atacama Desert Adventure - Patagonia and Chile
4 days from $2,999
Between the mighty Andes and the Pacific, Chile’s Atacama Desert is one of the driest, most remote, and most hauntingly beautiful places on the planet. Begin your Chile tour, at our luxury eco-lodge, on an all-inclusive desert sojourn including fine dining, complimentary house wines and spirits, all on-tour transportation, a choice of expertly guided cultural excursions and naturalist-guided adventures, and your flight from Calama to Santiago.
Your Desert Adventure Begins
On arrival at the airport in Calama, you’ll be warmly greeted and escorted to our luxury desert lodge. The scenic journey to the Nayo Alto Atacama takes about 90 minutes and transports you from a lively Chilean town into a breathtaking wilderness of dramatic mountain ranges, hidden valleys and the bone-dry Atacama Desert. Settle in to your spacious, stylishly appointed guestroom and take in the mesmerizing views from your private terrace. This evening, you’ll sit down to a farm-to-table dinner prepared by our Lodge’s skilled chefs and accompanied by fine Chilean wines. Meals D
Tailor Your Stay in the Atacama
Choose from a wide variety of included excursions, and tailor your exploration to your own interests and personal taste for adventure. Led by experienced naturalists or culturally-savvy guides, you’ll be joined by just a small group of other Lodge guests so as to leave no trace. Cultural excursions usually combine traveling in a comfortable van and some walking or hiking; you can meet with villagers in the High Andes, discover ancient petroglyphs that reveal the development of the region’s ancient farming communities, or explore the 2,400-year-old archaeological site at Tulor. Back at our luxury lodge, you’ll enjoy delightful dining accompanied by fine house wines, spirits and beverages. This evening, you might join an Astronomical Adventure! The Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on Earth; with such low humidity, nearly cloud-free skies, and the absence of ambient light, this is one of the best places in the world for stargazing. The Alto Atacama Desert Lodge also has the only open-air observatory in the region – with swivel chairs, a powerful telescope and an expert guide to enrich this activity. If the moon is full during your stay here, you can even join an exciting 2.5-mile night-time walk into the appropriately named Valley of Mars! Meals B+L+D
Another Day at Alto Atacama
With our luxury eco-lodge as your base, delight in another day of guided adventures and activities. Once again, you can choose from a variety of included excursions to pursue your personal interests. Guided excursions by van can take you quite far afield, if you wish… to explore a high-mountain geothermal field of bubbling mud pools, geysers and fumaroles; to learn about the geological forces that formed the ethereal landscapes of the Valley of the Moon, or to experience rural life in remote mountain villages. Longer, more challenging hikes and guided mountain biking expeditions are available for active travelers. Again, fine dining back at Alto Atacama is accompanied by a selection of house wines, spirits and beverages. And in between meals and excursions, you might opt for a spa treatment, go for a swim in one of six spectacular pools, or just relax on your private terrace enjoying the captivating scenery. This will take around 3 hours and will give you the chance to see the glacier up close, as well as observing Southern beech forests, and – if you’re lucky – spotting endangered South Andean deer . When the sailing trip is finished, you’ll head back to the hotel.
*Lake Grey boat trips are available on selected days. Minimum number of passengers apply.

Heading South in Chile: Santiago to Patagonia
If you travel from Santiago to Patagonia by land, you won’t be disappointed. Santiago is the capital of Chile and it’s a great starting point to explore the country. From there you can go up north to see the Atacama Desert or head south towards Patagonia.
Santiago to Patagonia Itinerary
If you have a couple of days to spend in Santiago, you can take a walk around Plaza de Armas , then head to Plaza de la Constitución to see the Palacio de la Moneda , seat of the President of the Republic of Chile.
The day after cross the Parque Forestal to get to Barrio Bellavista , a vibrant neighborhood with cafes and restaurants. It’s also easy to get around with metro. The bus station is located at the metro stop U. de Santiago. There you can buy tickets for different destinations. To give you an idea of price, we paid around $5 with one way with Turbus to go to Valparaiso. Turbus is a cheap and reliable bus company for all destinations in Chile.
Where to stay: conveniently located in the heart of downtown. Wi-fi doesn’t work well, but overall good value.
Santiago to Patagonia: Valparaiso
Valparaiso is around a one-hour bus ride from Santiago and it’s the perfect second stop for your Chilean trip. It’s a world heritage site where you can admire colorful graffiti and clifftop homes. The bus stop is located in the lower part of the city, you can take a cab or the funiculars to reach the higher part. The higher part is the one where you want to be to enjoy spectacular views and immerse yourself in the unique colorful scenery.
Where to stay: one of the top stays of our RTW trip. Located in the picturesque graffiti area. Breakfast is delicious.
Where to eat: There are a couple of lovely places that I recommend for food. El Peral is a cafe with a view where food and juices are delicious. Cafe con Gracia is a small cafe that offers delicious Sangria, sandwiches, tapas and cakes. At El Internado you can taste delicious tapas and enjoy a good young atmosphere.
Santiago to Patagonia: Concepcion
From Valparaiso, we headed to Concepcion . There is not much to see in Concepcion, we chose to go there because it seemed like a good intermediate stop on our way to Puerto Montt.
The bus trip from Valparaiso to Concepcion should take 7 hours based on Google maps but the bus does a lot of local stops. It became a 10-hour trip. If you take a bus in Chile don’t rely on the distance from Google maps, most of the time it will take a couple of hours more so remember to be flexible with your plans.
Concepcion is not a touristy town and we liked it for this reason. It’s walkable and the University is worth a stop because there is a Pinacoteca with paintings of local artists and a huge mural dedicated to the rise and history of Central-South America.
Where to stay: Hostal Express walking distance from the center. Good value and very nice host.
Ascend to the summit of the Concepción and Alegre Hills using traditional elevators on this tour .
Santiago to Patagonia: Pucon
Next stop was Pucon . It’s a touristy town because of its famous hot springs and volcanoes. Local buses take you to the hot springs. There are a couple of hot springs located close to each other and it takes around 30 min to get there from the bus station in Pucon.
We went to Quimey-Co because it was raining that day and they have covered pools. The best hot springs in the area are Geometricas . There are agencies that organize the day trip for you but the trip takes 2 hours and the cost is around $40 per person.
Where to eat: Recommended restaurants in Pucon: Ecole (vegetarian) and Trawan (good creative food and cocktails).
Where to stay: Hostal La Tetera cozy mountain cabin style. The bathroom is shared but always clean. Good breakfast.
Related tour : Pucon: Full-Day Villarrica Volcano Climb
Santiago to Patagonia: Puerto Montt
Our last stop before Patagonia was Puerto Montt . The reason why we chose this location was because we found cheap flights to get to Punta Arenas (the southernmost city in Chile-Patagonia and good starting point to explore the region). Just one bus company goes to Puerto Montt from Pucon, the name is Jac and you can buy tickets at Jac bus station located downtown.
Where to eat: We didn’t spend much time in Puerto Montt, but if you pass by, I can recommend the restaurant Qavah for good lunch menu.
Where to stay: Hotel Le Mirage walking distance from the center. Nice staff and good value.
Related tour : Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas: Panoramic City Tour
This itinerary is based on the cheap flight that we found from Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas. Starting in Santiago, this is the cheapest itinerary that we could plan to get to Patagonia.
I highly recommend you to check different locations in Chile to get to Patagonia so you can plan your trip accordingly. We made our way from Santiago to Puerto Montt by land, then flew to Punta Arenas and made our way back north to El Chalten by land.

Chile & Argentina Patagonia
This 8-day Chile and Argentina Patagonia adventure tour incorporates the highlights of Santiago de Chile with a self-drive adventure from Punta Arenas south to Puerto Natales, Torres del Paine National Park and beyond to El Calafate through the jaw dropping scenery of Patagonia. Whilst all your excursions and transfers in Santiago are on a private basis with a private guide, your road trip is not, allowing you to create your own adventure at your own pace and schedule for a unique Patagonia experience.
Santiago de Chile
Your adventure begins with a tour of the historical and modern sights of Santiago de Chile. Start at the main avenue, the Alameda Bernardo O’Higgins, and head to La Moneda, the Government Palace. Walk through the pedestrian streets of Huérfanos and Ahumada, and visit the famous main square of the city, the Plaza de Armas, and the Metropolitan Cathedral.
From there, continue to Santa Lucia hill, which is a great vantage point for viewing the city. Stroll around the cultural and artistic neighborhood of Bellavista, and take the aerial tramway to San Cristóbal Hill for panoramic views of the city. Finally, visit Providencia with its top restaurants, elegant shops, and modern high-rise buildings.
Punta Arenas
Fly south and explore the cultural and natural wonders of Punta Arenas, one of the most southerly cities on the continent. Before beginning your road trip, why not stay a while and see a variety of monuments and points of interest including the main square, the navy and maritime museum, the famous Roca Street, the Nao Victoria Museum, the Patagonian Institute, and of course the city’s coastline.
Torres del Paine National Park
Your main destination is Torres del Paine National Park. Located right in the south of Patagonia near the town of Puerto Natales, it delivers stunning scenery characterized by rushing rivers, ancient forests and glaciers, jagged peaks, freezing glacial lakes, waterfalls and wild windswept scrublands.
Along the way, be sure to stop at the Mylodon Cave, a large, impressive cave system where the well-preserved fossils of a giant 12,000-year-old ground sloth were discovered. Relax at the Pampa Lodge on the shores of the picturesque Serrano River, which marks the entrance to the Park. The hiking trails in Torres del Paine are without a doubt the most famous in Patagonia.
El Calafate
Cross the border into the Argentinian Pampa, stopping along the way for anything that takes your interest. Then indulge in some pampering at the Imago Hotel and Spa, which overlooks Argentino Lake, close to the glistening (and moving!) Perito Moreno Glacier.
Upon returning to Puerto Natales in Chile, spend your last night at the award-winning NOI Indigo Patagonia to take in the neighboring Ultima Esperanza waterways and glacial lakes of the region, before heading back to the airport at Punta Arenas past the unforgettable peaks of Torres del Paine for one last time.
Itinerary & Prices
All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.
Arrival & City Tour
Upon arrival in Chile, you will be picked up at the airport and taken on today’s excursion, we explore the historical and modern sights of Santiago de Chile. We start our trip at the main avenue, the Alameda Bernardo O’Higgins, and head to La Moneda, the Government Palace, where we will learn about the historical and contemporary role it plays in Chilean life.
From there we take a walk through the pedestrian streets of Huérfanos and Ahumada, where the main commercial activity of the city is concentrated. Afterward, we visit the famous main square of the city, the Plaza de Armas, around which are several important historical buildings, including the Metropolitan Cathedral. From there we continue our trip on to Santa Lucia hill, the mount upon which the Spanish founded Santiago in 1541. It is a lone steep rock, covered in vegetation and a great vantage point for viewing the city.
Moving on, we cross the Mapocho River to get to Bellavista, the cultural and artistic neighborhood of Santiago and home to many artists, actors, and young bohemian people. Bellavista lies at the foot of the San Cristóbal Hill, the highest in town, and is situated in the middle of the Metropolitan Park. We venture up the hill to explore the surrounding areas all the while enjoying beautiful panoramic views of the city. Finally, we visit Providencia with its top restaurants, elegant shops, and modern high-rise buildings. After this amazing tour, we will call it a day and return to the hotel.
Drive to Puerto Natales
Today you are picked up from your hotel and transferred to the airport for a flight to Punta Arenas.
Upon arrival, you pick up your 4 X 4 Toyota 4 Runner or similar (SUV urban 4×4) at the airport or downtown to begin your epic cross-country journey through Chile. One of the most unique and adventurous ways to see the country, travel at your own pace and schedule, stopping whenever you want when you see something that takes your fancy or piques your interest. We provide a roadmap that highlights all the best things to see, prepare all your permissions in advance for entry into Argentina and cover all airport charges for the seven days.
You’ll begin in Punta Arenas and today drive on to Puerto Natales, a distance of some 250km or 155 miles.
Take some time to explore the cultural and natural wonders of this region, known as the entrance to the Antarctic continent. On your trip, you may learn about the history of Punta Arenas and visit a variety of monuments and points of interest including the main square, the navy and maritime museum, the famous Roca Street, the Nao Victoria Museum, the Patagonian Institute, and of course the city’s coastline. Located on the edge of the Strait of Magellan this metropolis is full of quaint charm and offers visitors a different perspective of life in Chile.
A Drive Through Patagonia
Today you will head to the Torres del Paine National Park, a distance of 150km or just under a hundred miles. Torres del Paine is an official National Park of Chile and the area encompasses mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers in southern Chilean Patagonia. The Cordillera del Paine, a range of rugged mountain peaks that stretch out into the crisp cool air is the centerpiece of the park. It lies in a transition area between the Magellanic subpolar forests and the Patagonian Steppes and is located 112 km (70 mi) north of Puerto Natales.
Along the way, be sure to visit the Mylodon Cave, home to a giant ground sloth some 12,000 years ago and an incredibly impressive cave which since then has acted as home to Mylodon until about 5,000 years ago subsequently other animals, such as the “Dwarf Horse” Hippidion, the saber-toothed cat Smilodon and the litoptern Macrauchenia. Human remains have also been found there confirming that humans also used it as a house as well. Afterwards, continue on to the Torres del Paine National Park where you will be welcomed by the spectacular sights of gigantic granite towers and impressive mountain peaks.
Pampa Lodge
Today you take a rest from driving and settle in at the Pampa lodge. Located near Rio Serrano, one of the smallest “towns” in the world – it consists of the lodge and a few small houses – we find ourselves right on the shores of the picturesque Serrano river which marks the entrance to the park. Pampa Lodge is a simple and yet cozy alternative for people wanting to enjoy amazing views of the Paine Horns and it offers unrivaled locations for those wanting to get the best views of the Torres del Paine National Park. From the lodge, you have access to the park trails and some of the most striking scenery for many a mile.
We recommend spending the evening in this beautiful and wondrous area, relaxing after a meal and enjoying the sparkling clean air and dead silence you can only find in such parts of the world.
Towards El Calafate, Argentina
Today you’ll head towards the border with Argentina and embark upon a drive from Torres del Paine to El Calafate, a distance of 287 km or 178 miles. This drive via the border crossing at Cerro Castillo should take you around four and a half hours without hurrying.
The process is quite straightforward on both sides of the border as all the paperwork you need in terms of the car is pre-prepared for you and the crossing takes only a few moments. Once you clear customs on both sides, you are free to drive into the Argentinian Pampa to your final destination of the Imago Hotel and Spa, stopping along the way for anything that takes your interest.
Glaciers and Spas
Spend the day in and around the Imago Hotel and Spa for a bit of relaxing and pampering. The Imago Hotel and Spa offers fantastic gourmet food and all the luxurious areas you would expect in a top-of-the-range spa, in fact, the spa even offers a seven-day program of spa treatments so you won’t be short of things to choose from.
The rooms overlook the lake and are a short distance from the Perito Moreno Glacier, a glacier which is considered something of a phenomenon, in which its great mass of ice continuously advances, causing the accumulation, rupture, and detachment of gigantic blocks of ice on its 5 km wide front. The glacier is located on the Canal de Los Témpanos; where the numerous ice fragments of the glacier sail and the wall of ice reaches as high as 60 meters above the water.
Return to Puerto Natales
Today you’ll make the return drive from El Calafate to Puerto Natales. Once again you’ll cross the border, and have all of this prepared for you so this is a painless procedure. Traffic at the border crossing is at a peak during the high season from October to March, but this shouldn’t delay you on your journey at all.
We arrive at the beautiful Noi Indigo hotel located at the “end of the world”, but more specifically between the wonderful Patagonian landscapes on one side and the great sea of Puerto Natales on the other. NOI Indigo Patagonia combines the warmth and personal service of a lodge with the facilities of a modern hotel. Welcome to santiago.
Arrive to Santiago, Chile’s metropolitan capital, where your private guide will take you to your boutique hotel in the charming Lastarria neighborhood. Lastarria is a nice area for walking around, with quiet streets, flowering trees, attractive colonial architecture, and a variety of restaurants and boutiques.
There are plenty of things to see and do in the Santiago area. Take a private tour of Santiago, either on your arrival day or as a one-day extension, or add a trip (day or overnight) to nearby wine country or the historic port city of Valparaíso. Just let us know your interests.
Accommodations: Hotel Magnolia
Hotel Magnolia is set in a renovated 1929 mansion in downtown Santiago, close to Santa Lucia Hill, museums, the historic center, and Barrio Lastarria. Designed by award-winning architect Cazú Zegers, who also designed traveler-favorite hotel Tierra Patagonia, the Hotel Magnolia seamlessly blends preserved historic marble and vintage furnishings with modern amenities. The 42-room hotel offers a restaurant, bar, library, and rooftop lounge with panoramic views.
World-Famous Wines in the Colchagua Valley
Set out for the Colchagua Valley, one of the most important wine regions in South America. This area is known for its top-quality reds, particularly Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Malbec.
The Colchagua Valley is a great place to explore by bike or by vehicle. Start at Viña Estampa, the first winery in Chile dedicated to assemblage (blend) wines. After a tour and tasting you’ll enjoy a leisurely ride to the family-run Viu Manent Winery, home to several award-winning vintages, including their Gran Reserva Malbec (2010) and Secreto de Viu Manent Syrah (2010). Following your tour and tasting, you will enjoy lunch at the winery. After lunch you will visit Neyen de Apalta Winery, which focuses all its production on one Bordeaux-style blend from 115 year-old Carménère vines.
For those who like a more relaxed ride, we offer e-bikes, which have a small motion-powered motor that lets you expend as much or as little effort as you like on your bike. If you prefer not to bike, we can also arrange this day with vehicle transport, or as a combination of biking and car transport.
Accommodations: Noi Blend
Located in the Colchagua Valley in the heart of Chilean wine country, the Noi Blend was constructed in a vintage vineyard dating back to 1875. The hotel maintains the traditional architecture and historical charm of the original structure, while emphasizing modern comfort and amenities. The 13-room hotel offers a swimming pool and a restaurant featuring local ingredients and local wines.
More Great Small Chilean Wineries in the Casablanca Valley
Visit the Casablanca Valley, an area characterized by the cool coastal breezes that create an ideal climate for growing Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. Start with a tour and tasting at renowned Matetic Vineyards, particularly known for their Syrah. Travel by bike or car to Kingston Vineyards, a winery pioneering the production of cool climate, artisan-style reds. Wines from the 300-acre family ranch are handcrafted and bottled on site. You will enjoy a tour and private tasting of Kingston’s distinctive wines followed by a picnic lunch. Return in the afternoon to La Casona boutique hotel, located on the property of Matetic Vineyards; a beautiful small hotel with one of the region’s best restaurants.
Accommodations: La Casona at Casa Matetic
Constructed during the turn of the century, La Casona is a traditional and elegant country house with seven garden suites, located at Matetic Vineyards. Each room is named after the red and white grapes used in their wines. The landscaped gardens provide a tranquil retreat, and the restaurant is one of the best in the Chilean wine country. All bookings include a visit to the family wine cellar and production facilities, located a few miles away.
The Windswept Strait of Magellan and Last Hope Sound
Fly south to Punta Arenas and enjoy a scenic private transfer to your hotel, set just outside of the Torres del Paine National Park Entrance. Surrounded on all sides by rolling pampa blanketed in evergreen shrubs, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Lake Sarmiento with the Paine Massif filling the horizon above it.
Accommodations: Tierra Patagonia , 4 nights
An exceptional option in the area of Torres del Paine National Park, Tierra Patagonia Hotel sits on a bluff where the pampa meets Lake Sarmiento, with views across the lake to the peaks of the Paine Massif from all rooms. The beautifully well-designed building seems to emerge from the hillside and blends harmoniously with the landscape. Patagonian details decorate its three suites, 34 superior rooms and three standard rooms. The hotel has a restaurant and bar, library lounge, spa with heated pool and hot tub, and one of the loveliest views in Torres del Paine.
Explore Torres del Paine National Park
Enjoy guided excursions each day to see the park’s iconic sites, such as the soaring granite towers from which it takes its name. Each day you can choose from active excursions, such as hiking, and more relaxed ones, such as driving tours and scenic walks. The guides at your lodge will discuss the options with you and help you plan a trip that matches your interests.
Accommodations: Tierra Patagonia
Depart for home or your next destination.
Today you will say goodbye to your local guide and head to the airport for your flight home or to your next destination.
