If you are from Pakistan and thinking about visiting Europe, you will very likely need a visa in order to travel to the continent. If you want to visit France, Germany, Spain, or any of the top countries in Europe, you should probably apply for a Schengen visa from Pakistan. A Schengen visa gives you access to the entire Schengen area—all 26 European states. Keep reading for all the essential information about Schengen visa for Pakistani citizens and Pakistan residents, including where and how to apply, and the various Schengen visa types for Pakistani passport holders and Pakistan residents. 

About Schengen visa for Pakistani citizens and Pakistan residents

• If you are a Pakistani citizen, you will need to apply for a Schengen visa in order to enter the Schengen area. 
• If you are a Pakistani resident, depending on where you have citizenship, you may have to apply for a Schengen visa in order to enter the Schengen area. ( For list of countries with visa-free access to the Schengen area, click here ).
• With a Schengen visa, Pakistani citizens and residents can spend up to 90 days within a 180-day period in the Schengen area. 

Where do you apply for Schengen visa?

• No matter where they are applying from, all applicants must apply for a Schengen visa through a specific Schengen country. 
• Where you apply to depends on where in the Schengen area you will be spending the most time on your trip.  
• For example, if you are going to the Schengen area and you plan on visiting both Germany and France, but you will spend the majority of your time in France, you should apply for a Schengen visa from France. 
• If you are spending an equal amount of time in multiple countries, you should apply for a Schengen visa from the country of your first entry to the Schengen area. For example, if you are flying directly from Islamabad to Berlin, but then spending an equal amount of time in both Germany, and France, you should apply for a Schengen visa for Germany. 

Where do you apply for Schengen visa in Pakistan?

• If you are applying for a Schengen visa from Pakistan, you will apply via the embassy, consulate, or visa application center associated with the Schengen country you are applying through.
• All the major Schengen countries have embassies in Islamabad, and many also have consulate missions in major Pakistani cities, such as Karachi. 
• For example, if you are applying for a Schengen visa for Germany in Pakistan, you can apply at either the Germany Embassy in Islamabad or the German Consulate in Karachi. 
• Please note, if you are trying to apply for a Schengen visa from one of the many  honorary consuls in Lahore, check to make sure that it provides Schengen visa services. For example, while there is a German Honorary Consul in Lahore, it does not process Schengen visa applications.  
• Ultimately, different countries have different application procedures: contact the consulate or embassy of the country you want to apply to for specific information on where, how, and when to apply. 

Do I have to apply in person for Schengen visa from Pakistan?

• If you are applying for Schengen visa from Pakistan, you will likely have to apply in person, regardless of where you are applying. 
• Most countries require applicants to schedule an in-person appointment online in order to apply. 
• When you attend your in-person appointment, you will bring with you a print-out of your application and all other required documents/materials, including your passport, photos, and money to pay any visa fees.

How do I access the Schengen application?

• The universal Schengen visa application is available online, here .
• Most countries will allow you to apply using the above form, which you can simply download, fill out, print, and sign. You will submit this form in person at your Schengen visa appointment. 
• Alternatively, certain countries will require you to apply online, via their own visa application portal. For example, all applicants for German Schengen visas must apply online, through this link . Print out this form and bring it to the German Embassy in Islamabad or the Consulate in Karachi. The form contains a barcode, which will be scanned at the German Embassy/Consulate you apply through.

How much does a Schengen visa cost from Pakistan?

• Schengen visas cost €80 for most applicants.

Recently, on TikTok , I received hundreds of messages from people asking how they can travel to Europe. I spent a few days replying to everyone in my inbox, but the messages kept increasing, and I couldn’t handle them anymore. That’s when I decided to write a blog on this topic so that the thousands of people who follow me on TikTok can benefit from this special blog. In this blog, I will use simple and easy-to-understand English to guide everyone through the step-by-step process of obtaining a visa.

What is a Schengen visa?

So many people still do not know what is a Schengen visa, here I would explain in easy words about Schengen visa. A Schengen visa is a special type of visa that allows travelers to visit multiple European countries within the Schengen Area using a single visa. The Schengen Area is a group of European countries that have abolished passport and other types of border control at their mutual borders, allowing for easier movement between them.

With a Schengen visa, travelers can typically visit all the countries within the Schengen Area without the need for separate visas for each country. This makes it convenient for tourists, business travelers, and others who want to explore multiple European destinations during a single trip.

It’s important to note that not all European countries are part of the Schengen Area, so travelers should check which countries are covered by their Schengen visa and plan their itinerary accordingly. Additionally, the application process and requirements for a Schengen visa can vary from country to country within the Schengen Area, so travelers need to apply to the specific Schengen country they intend to visit first or spend the most time in.

The Schengen visa is a very important travel document for travelers like me. It allows you to explore a big area in Europe, covering 27 countries and spanning 4.3 million square kilometers. I had to go through some challenges to get this visa, but eventually, I got it from the Netherlands after facing many rejections. I’d like to share my experiences and explain how the Schengen visa process works.

The Schengen Area is a group of many countries, The 27 Schengen countries are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. If you have one Schengen visa then you can visit all of those 27 countries in Europe with your Schengen visa.

You have the freedom to choose any of these countries for your Schengen visa application. When you get this visa, it allows you to visit all the Schengen countries. If you’re not sure which country to pick, there’s a simple rule to follow.

First, choose the country where you plan to spend most of your time in the Schengen region; this is called the primary destination. If you plan to spend your time equally in different countries, then the first country you enter in the Schengen area should be your main choice. It’s important to know that this rule is not very strict. If you have a valid Schengen visa, you can go to one Schengen country and leave from another without any problem. This flexibility won’t affect your future visa applications.

How to Start Applying for a Schengen Visa from Pakistan?

To begin your journey to get a Schengen visa, you need to make sure you can apply from a country that’s part of the Schengen agreement. Usually, you start the process at a visa application center in your home country. For me, it began at Dubai in UAE.

If you live in UAE, then you can start the process in Dubai or Abu Dhabi at VFS Office, if you live in Pakistan then you can start the process from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi VFS office whichever is near to you.

Can You Apply for a Schengen Visa From Pakistan Online?

No, it is not possible to apply for a Schengen visa from Pakistan online. Unfortunately, online applications for Schengen visas are not available in Pakistan. It’s important to note that all visa applications must be submitted in person at the designated visa office. Online submission of Schengen visa applications is not an option for applicants in Pakistan.

Now, let me explain the specific documents I gave when I applied for my Schengen visa to the Netherlands in Dubai UAE. These are the basic things you need for a Schengen visa application even if you are applying from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, UAE or any country, although some embassies might have slightly different requirements. For example, Italy asks for one original set of documents and a duplicate set, but the Netherlands doesn’t require the duplicate set.

Documents Required for Schengen visa:-

If you’re planning to apply for a Schengen visa, you might be wondering what documents you need to prepare. Navigating the visa application process can be perplexing, but worry not; we’ve got you covered. Below is a comprehensive list of the documents you’ll need for your short-term Schengen visa application.

Here is a comprehensive listing of the essential documents submitted with my Schengen visa application:

• Completed and printed application form. (Don’t worry in this article I will tell you how to get the form)
• Two passport-sized photographs.
• Valid passport.
• Six-month bank statement.
• Unpaid flight reservation.
• Unpaid hotel booking.
• Letter of employment.
• Leave certificate from the employer.
• The most recent three months’ salary slips.
• Medical insurance coverage of at least $30,000. (It will cost you around 100 0r 150 Dirhams, you can convert into rupees)
• Family Registration Certificate (FRC).
• Photocopies of your passport, along with previous visas and entry stamps.
• Photocopy of your Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC).
• A detailed cover letter outlining your day-to-day activities during your trip.
• National Tax Number (NTN) certificate and the last three years’ tax returns.
• If you have travel history, visited other countries before applying for a Schengen visa, then print your travel history from your passport, it can be stamps of visa stickers of those countries which you have visited.
• If you are married, its better to print your marriage certificate as well and include in your documents. It will help and show to the visa officer that you have family back at home and there are more chances you will return back to your home country.

I will explain again below some of the above points so you can get a clear idea:

• Visa Application Form : The first step is to complete and sign the visa application form.
• Recent Passport Photos : Attach two recent passport-sized photos taken within the last three months. These photos must meet the specific Schengen visa photo requirements.
• Valid Passport : Ensure your passport is not older than ten years and remains valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area. If you have older passports with previous visas, include them in your application.
• Round Trip Reservation or Itinerary : Prepare a comprehensive travel itinerary that includes dates and flight numbers for your entry and exit from the Schengen area. You can get flight booking from any travel agents but must be real and not just dummy, you can pay a small amount of fee to get the reservation/ booking tickets. Remember the flight booking should show in the system in case the visa officer double checks, therefore just a dummy or fake tickets will make problems.
• Travel Insurance Policy : Obtain a travel insurance policy that covers your entire stay in the Schengen territory. The policy should provide a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros for medical emergencies, including illnesses, accidents, and repatriation in case of death. You can conveniently purchase the insurance online from Europe Assistance or from any travel agency in your city.
• Proof of Accommodation : Present documentation that confirms your place of accommodation throughout your stay in the Schengen area. This can include:
• Hotel/hostel bookings. (It must be real hotel booking, you can get it on booking.com and cancel it later after getting the visa. There are so many hotels where you can cancel the booking before 24 hrs, so make sure you can cancel your hotel booking before 24 hrs or otherwise hotel will charge you.)
• A letter of invitation from a host with whom you’ll be staying. (If available that’s great, if not then leave it)
• Proof of Financial Means : Demonstrate that you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself during your Schengen stay. You can provide one of the following:
• A bank account statement showing adequate funds for your trip. Ensure the statement is no older than six months or at least 3 months.
• If someone else is paying for your trip and you are student then a sponsorship letter from someone confirming their financial support for your Schengen trip. This can be from your father or brother, this letter must be accompanied by the sponsor’s bank statement, which should also be no older than six or three months.
• If you are working in a company, a NOC letter is required from your company mentioning that the company has no issues allowing you to visit Europe.
• If you are a business owner, then a document of proof that you are the owner of business or a company trade license is required.

In addition to these generally required documents, Schengen embassies worldwide may request specific documents based on your employment status and the type of Schengen visa you’re applying for. The visa application process may seem complex, but with the right documentation and guidance, you can navigate it successfully.

After I applied, it took around 15 days for my application to come back to me. I originally asked for an eight-day stay with a single-entry visa, but the consulate gave me a multiple-entry visa that’s valid for 30 days. This longer duration allows me to visit not only the Netherlands but also other countries in the Schengen area, which I’m really looking forward to.

How to Fill the Form for A Schengen Visa:

First, you need to visit VFS Global website, for example in google search you can write ( VFS global Netherlands visa from Pakistan) See the below screenshot how I did:-

Same thing you can do for Germany, France, Italy, Spain, or any Schengen European country whichever you want to visit, in this example I am talking about Netherlands, but if you want to visit Germany then you can search in Google ( VFS global Germany visa from Pakistan ). Every European country which comes under Schengen zone has VFS website link.

So, let’s continue, I was giving you an example of Netherlands visa, so you can see in the above screenshot there is one website link, I will click on it and then it will take me to a new page which will look like the below screenshot;

Once you are on the same page as I showed you above, then you click on Apply For a Visa (Star Now) button. Then it will take you to another page which looks like the below screenshot:

Once you click on Ready to apply button, it will take you to another page which looks like the below screenshot:

And once you click on that Apply Now button, it will take you to a new website which looks like the below screenshot:

Then you can see on top right side, create an account button, if this is your first them then create an account and start filling the form with your details. Once you fill the form then print it, sign it and then next step is to book online biometrics (finger prints) booking at VFS website.

To make biometrics (finger prints) booking, you need to Schedule an appointment. From the top, in second screenshot you can see an option called Book an appointment click on that and it will take you to a login page like the below screenshot:

If you have already account there then Sign in and if it’s your first time, then click on I don’t have any account and create an account on the website and book the appointment whichever date and time suits you.

That’s all, now you have your visa application form filled & printed, also you have made the booking for your appointment, then next step is to visit the VFS office on the same date as your appointment date.

Once you arrive at the VFS office, they will take the visa application form, along with all the documents and passport and also they will take your biometrics (finger prints). That’s all really, nothing much and all you can do is to wait for the results. 🙂

Getting your first Schengen visa in Pakistan can be quite tough. So, I want to share some advice to make it easier for you. Here are my proven strategies:

Here are some tips to help you getting a Schengen Visa in Pakistan:

• Trip Duration: When you’re applying for the first time, it’s a good idea to plan a simple and affordable trip. Try not to include too many countries in your itinerary. Start with one Schengen country or maybe two. After you get the visa, you can always change your plans to visit more places. I did this and traveled to 15 countries with a single visa.
• Apply Early: Apply for the visa well in advance, up to three months before your intended travel date. It’s better to apply during the off-peak season when the embassy or consulate has more time to review your application. Keep in mind that many people apply for visas in May, June, and July, which can make it harder to get an appointment.
• Build a Travel History: If your goal is tourism, consider visiting other popular tourist destinations like Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, and Turkey before applying for a Schengen visa. This will show that you are a genuine tourist who loves to travel internationally. Also, explore countries where you can visit without a visa with a Pakistani passport to add more travel experiences to your portfolio.
• Financial and Professional Records: If you have a job, make sure your financial records are in order. Keep records of your salary, and ensure it’s deposited in your bank account through official channels, like a bank-issued check. If you have savings in addition to your regular income, mention this in your cover letter to the embassy. Being transparent about your finances helps the embassy understand your financial situation better, almost like telling your life story to a wise teacher.

Fiscal Considerations: The cost of a Schengen visa in Pakistan varies. For adults, it’s 80 Euros (you pay in PKR), and for children aged 6 to 12, it’s 40 Euros (also in PKR). It’s important to note that this fee is non-refundable, even if your visa is denied, no matter the reason.

Processing Time: Usually, it takes about 15 calendar days to process a Schengen visa. But sometimes, like in my case, it might take longer, up to 20 days. In certain situations, it can even take up to 30 days, depending on how busy the embassy or consulate is. This timeline includes the time between when you submit your application at the visa center and when the embassy/consulate reviews it.

Financial C ondition : While there are no specific financial requirements mentioned for your bank statement, I recommend having enough money in your account to cover your travel expenses comfortably. The Schengen area generally follows a daily cost of 50 Euros per day. If you are in Pakistan, better to have minimum of 25 Lakh rupees in your bank account, and if you have more than 25 Lakh in your bank account, that’s much better.

Is Obtaining a Schengen Visa in Pakistan Challenging? Getting a Schengen visa in Pakistan depends on your individual circumstances. If you have a strong professional background, a history of international travel, or family ties to Pakistan, it’s usually easier to get a Schengen visa. If your visa is rejected, don’t give up; try again and make improvements. My own experience shows that persistence pays off.

In Conclusion: My journey to get a Schengen visa had some challenges at the beginning, but I learned that persistence pays off. If you face a visa rejection, try again and improve your application. I found that getting a Schengen visa in Pakistan is quite similar across countries. However, some nations like Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands have higher approval rates because they are more welcoming to tourists.

That time I visited 12 countries, including Australia and the UK, among others. Surprisingly, my Schengen visa was rejected. I tried reapplying, but it was rejected again. In the meantime, I applied for a USA visa and was successful on my first attempt. However, when I reapplied for the Schengen visa, it was rejected once more. I persisted and tried a total of 16 times for the Schengen visa, but it was denied each time. Despite these setbacks, I never gave up. Finally, on my 17th attempt, they approved my Schengen visa.

I’m sharing my story to emphasize the importance of perseverance. Sometimes people obtain a Schengen visa on their first try with a fresh passport, while others, like me, face repeated rejections despite having a strong travel history. So, don’t hesitate and overthink it. Give it a shot. If you have a travel history, apply for the Schengen visa. Even if you don’t, still go ahead and apply. You might be the fortunate one. It’s just a small application fee, and taking a chance won’t break your bank account. 🙂

The schengen visa – what is it.

Anyone planning a visit to Europe from Pakistan should be aware of the Schengen Visa. This is an important consideration for Pakistani nationals as the visa has great benefits. The visa is currently valid in a total of 26 member countries across the European continent (known collectively as the Schengen Area ). This article provides comprehensive information on the Schengen Visa for Pakistani Citizens.

The Schengen Visa is a travel document that allows the holder to travel freely within the Schengen Area, without the need for additional paperwork. For example, if you begin your travel in France and wish to move on to Germany or Spain (or any other of the 26 member states) you can do so without the need to obtain additional visas. There are no internal borders to negotiate across the Schengen Area, making it simple move from one country to another.

Schengen Visa types for Pakistani Citizens

Before applying, you need to determine the type of visa you require. The following criteria will help you decide which visa is suitable for you:

A  Uniform Schengen Visa  permits the holder to stay in, or travel within, any country in the Schengen Area, for up to a maximum of 90 days at a time within a six-month period from the date of issue. These can be issued as:

• a single entry visa, meaning the holder can only enter/exit the Schengen Area once • a double entry visa allowing a second entry within the time period • a multiple entry visa which can be used multiple times (within the permitted time limits of the visa)

A  Limited Territorial Validity Visa  is available for travel only in the particular Schengen country that originally issued the visa. Holders of this type of visa are not permitted to enter any other Schengen member state. These visas are most often used in emergency/humanitarian situations where travel documents are not normally available.

Thirdly, there is a  National Visa . This particular visa is suitable for those who wish to study or work in any one of the Schengen countries and again is available as either a single or multiple entry.

Applying for a visa

Pakistani citizens wishing to apply for a visa must begin the process by arranging an appointment at an embassy. The embassy you choose for this should be either the one relating to the country you will begin your trip (first point of entry within the Schengen Area) or to the country in which you be spending the majority of your time. You can schedule your appointment online on the VFS website or, if you prefer, in person at a local VFS centre.

You should be aware that it may take up to 2 weeks to complete the process and you will probably wait up to another 10 days for the embassy to contact you; we would therefore recommend that you apply for your visa at least one full month prior to the date you wish to travel.

The following fees currently apply: Adult visa: 60 EUROS Long stay visa (>90 days): 99 EUROS Child visa (6-12 years): 35 EUROS

There will be no fee payable under certain conditions, such as for: children under the age of 6; diplomatic passport holders, students and accompanying teachers; researchers from third world countries and participants aged 25 and under at educational non-profit conferences or other events.

You will need to obtain an application form which can be downloaded from the embassy website or you may collect a hard copy from the embassy office. Along with the completed form, you will also be required to produce the following documentary evidence:

• two passport sized photographs adhering to the official standard (full-frontal head image between 32-36mm in height with a plain background; no red-eye, reflections or shadows) • a valid passport with at least two available blank pages • a sponsorship letter explaining the reason/objective of the visit and stating the duration • evidence of travel insurance purchased showing a minimum coverage of 30,000 EUROS • copies of all relevant travel tickets and a full itinerary for the trip, including accommodation bookings and any tourist packages • proof of applicant’s status, such as birth/marriage certificates and any national identity documents or cards • employment details, such as contracts, proof of income for the past six months, leave entitlement consent from your employer and any other documentation as requested • business credentials and licenses for self-employed persons along with IT returns and proof of financial means • for retirees, pension payment documents/evidence for past six months • for students, proof of enrolment and verification from school or college

The information and documentation provided by you will be scrutinised carefully by the embassy for authenticity. Once this process has been completed, you will be invited to attend an interview with an embassy official.

The interview

This is a very important part of the visa application process and it’s useful to know what to expect before you attend. The interviewer will ask you a series of questions to ascertain the reason for your travel. You will be asked to confirm all dates and your intended itinerary. Them, you will also be expected to confirm your financial status and may be asked to provide further evidence or documentation in support of this. Lastly, you will need to be able to prove that all necessary arrangements are in place and that you understand your obligations regarding the laws of the country/countries you are intending to visit, and confirm that you will return to Pakistan at the end of the visit as planned.

Biometric testing will take place at the end of the interview and the results of this will be electronically associated with your identity documentation.

The outcome

You can expect to hear from the embassy within 10-15 days. If accepted, your visa will be posted out to you in due course. If, however, your application is not successful you will receive a letter stating the reasons why. Possible reasons for rejection could be:

Obtaining a Schengen visa for the first time can be challenging. It is advisable to create a short, clear and understandable itinerary based on your financial situation and budget. Travellers are allowed to enter Spain if they have a certificate of vaccination issued by the competent authorities of the country of origin from 14 days after the date of administration of the last dose of the complete vaccination Schedule. A new regulation has been issued by the Spanish Ministry of Health, dealing with the health measures to be implemented and concerning the travellers arriving in Spain. In this regard, it is mandatory for prospective travellers to know about the following:

• All passengers arriving in Spain, may it by air or sea, will undergo a health check carried out by Spanish authorities before entering the country. These controls may include a temperature check as well as a documentary and a visual assessment of passengers’ condition.
• Before initiating the travel to Spain all passengers originating from any airport or port must complete a public health form. It can be done online at www.spth.gob.es or through the free application: SPAIN TRAVEL HEALTH-sp TH. Once the form is filled-in, the person concerned will receive a QR code, which you will have to show upon arrival in Spain.
• A transitional period is established, until July 31 , 2020, in which international passengers who have not been able to complete the public health form electronically may fill it and present it upon arrival in Spain in paper format.

The Schengen visa is one of the important visas for travelers like me. because this visa unfolds the massive  Schengen area  which covers 4.3 million km of landmass and 26 countries in the European continent. I finally obtained this valuable sticker from the Netherlands after two refusals from Italy. I’ll share the experience and visa process with you.

Why my Schengen Visa was Refused before?

I applied in March 2017 for a Schengen visa at the Italy consulate in Karachi through Gerry’s. I provided all the relevant documents and the purpose of the visit. Before that application, I had visited the US and had a valid multiple-entry US visa  on my Passport, and also had visited many other countries.

I was called for an interview at the consulate and was asked different questions such as what is my job, what is my income, and one specific question which was about my purpose of visit.

I told them, I’m going on tourism to visit the historical places in Rome and Milan. they asked me about the names of the places to be visited in Rome which I didn’t know. and so they refused my visa application. actually, I couldn’t satisfy the visa officer and didn’t provide a detailed day-to-day itinerary and names of the places.

I again applied in October 2018 at the same Italy consulate . this time, I addressed the reasons and provided a detailed itinerary as well as more supporting documents such as property documents and business documents. However, shockingly, my second application got refused by Italy within 5 days. and I was shocked to see the straight rejection.

After that, I researched on the internet and found 95% of answers that don’t apply for at least 2 years after two refusals. even some of the European experts advised me to not apply again because it’ll be rejected. but I applied again to the Netherlands and got the visa.

You can apply for a Schengen visa from a country that is in the Schengen area agreement , most of the time, you can apply through a visa application center in your country. I applied through Gerry’s in Karachi, Pakistan.

The Schengen Area countries are Germany, Austria, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Hungry, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Poland, Sweden, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Greece & Malta.

You can apply to any of the above-listed countries for a Schengen visa, and if granted, you’ll be able to visit all of these countries with a valid Schengen visa. however, if you are confused about the Schengen country for applying for the visa then there is a simple rule for that.

Apply to the country where you’ll spend most of the days of your trip in the Schengen area. that’s called the main destination in the Schengen, in case your days are equal then you can apply to the country where you’ll enter first in the Schengen area.

But this is not a strict law, you can enter any Schengen country with a valid Schengen visa and can exit from another Schengen country. However, for future visa applications, it’s good to use your Schengen visa to enter the country which you mentioned in your application and you can exit from any other country. that’s not an issue at all.

I’ll share with you the exact list of documents that I attached with my third Schengen visa application and the reason for the purpose of my visit. these are general requirements for a Schengen visa, but some embassies have a slightly different process such as Italy asking for one original set of documents and one copy of the entire document list. but the Netherlands doesn’t require a copy of the entire application.

After submitting my application, I received it back after 20 days. I requested 08 days stay and a single entry visa, but they issued me a multiple entry visa and 30 days stay which is good to explore the beauty of the Netherlands and a few more countries in the Schengen area.

My Tips for Getting Schengen Visa in Pakistan

Since getting the Schengen visa for the first time is one of the difficult things, I would advise making a short, clear, and understandable itinerary according to your financial situation and budget. don’t include too many countries in the first application, plan a trip for only one Schengen country or two and when you have the visa, you can later change your plan if you want to visit more countries. As I also visited 15 countries on the same visa.

Apply ahead of time, legally, you can apply for a Schengen visa three months prior to your travel date. try to apply in the low season, so the embassy/consulate has enough time to study your application. May, June, and July are very busy months for European embassies around the world because that’s the time when more applications are received than average.

If you are going for tourism then first try to genuinely visit other popular tourist countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, United Arab Emirates, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Turkey, etc. that will make it clear that you are a genuine tourist and usually travel out of your country for tourism purposes. You can go to visa-free countries with a Pakistani passport in order to make some budget-friendly travel history.

Last but not least, keep your financial records clear and clean. for example, if you are employed then keep your salary slips with you and also credit your salary in your bank account through proper channels such as a bank cheque from the company credited into your account. if you have savings in your personal account other than your salary then do explain this in your cover letter to the embassy so they can better understand your financial situation. That’s like telling your story to the teacher who should believe it.

After two refusals, I obtained a Schengen visa and I’m very excited to visit the European Union. I also got the lesson that anything is possible when you try again and again. Make your case strong and better when you apply again. I will say that if one country refuses your visa then don’t apply again to that country, apply to a different and bigger Schengen country.

However, some countries have more approval rates than others including Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands because these countries are tourist-friendly countries in the Schengen area.

• You must present a Pakistan passport or other official travel document with at least 2 blank pages. Your travel document must have been issued within the past 10 years. It must be valid for at least 3 months after the date on which you want to leave the Schengen area.
• You provide a completed and signed form  visa application form  in. Each person traveling on your travel document must submit their own form. Forms for children under the age of 18 must be signed by a parent or guardian.
• Are you under the age of 18 and traveling without (1 of) your parents or guardian? Then leave them  the consent form  fill in (in English). The border control may ask for this upon entry into the Netherlands.
• You provide one  passport photo according to Dutch requirements  .
• You have your fingerprints taken. You do this when you submit your application. These remain valid for 59 months. For some applicants, such as children under the age of 12, this is not necessary. Have you provided biometrics (fingerprints and photo) within the last 59 months prior to your current application? Then you can choose to have your application submitted by someone else. You do not have to appear in person.

In addition to other necessary documents such as a valid passport and health insurance, applicants must also submit a bank statement as proof of possessing adequate funds for their stay. These funds should cover the expenses for the duration of their visit and their return or onward journey.

The minimum daily amount required to cover living expenses during the stay in Finland should be demonstrated by the applicant based on the duration of their intended stay.

Following is the minimum daily required amount for bearing expense of stay in Finland. An applicant is required to show the amount which is enough for the days he/she intends to spend there:

As of July 2024, one Euro is equal to Rs302.69. It means you need to have around Rs272,421 in your bank account if your stay is for 30 days in Finland.

UAE residents face Schengen visa delays and shorter stays amid summer demand

S ome UAE residents have experienced a Schengen visa application lottery while planning summer trips to Europe, after securing only short-term visits while colleagues and family were permitted extended stays.

Travellers have spoken of their frustration at receiving limited permits for work trips and holidays, despite presenting all required documentation and encountering lengthy delays to even get initial visa appointments.

The challenges come amid a surge in demand for travel to Europe, in a summer featuring the Euro 2024 football tournament and the coming Paris Olympics.

Feeling shortchanged

Dubai resident and Indian passport holder Siddarth Sivaprakash, who has received five Schengen visas previously, got a Schengen visa with a 10-day validity this year to attend the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in June.

Mr Sivaprakash “submitted all the required documents – bank statements, investment documents, NOC from the company”, but the visa matched his 10-day travel itinerary, while his colleague got a two-year visa.

"It’s difficult, and challenging to understand the decision-making behind this. I spent so much money and effort, but to end up with just 10 days," he added.

The Schengen visa allows entry to 29 European countries - most of which are in the European Union - to non EU-nationals for visits of up to 90 days or multiple visits over a longer duration.

While Emiratis do not need a visa to visit Schengen countries under a UAE-EU agreement, expat residents must still apply.

The non-refundable visa fee of €80 (Dh320.6) poses a significant financial burden for tourists.

Holiday plans shelved

Pakistani passport holder and Dubai resident Sadiq Saleem said he was forced to cancel a European holiday with his parents after he was issued a Schengen visa for 11 days.

"While it added two extra days to our 9-day travel itinerary for the Netherlands, it didn't offer us flexibility," he said.

"We missed out on blocking seats with our tour operator and didn't have enough validity to make changes to our holiday plans."

Mr Saleem, who has had previous Schengen visas, said the process needs to be streamlined. "For short-term visas with 10-day validity, they should offer an e-visa option."

Another Dubai expat and Indian passport holder, NM, who asked for his full name not to be used, also faced similar issues when he planned a family holiday to Europe.

“While my wife and daughter got multiple-entry visas for six months, I got a single-entry visa for the exact 10 days we had listed in our itinerary.”

He has travelled to Europe several times before and his last Schengen visa was multiple-entry with a two-year validity.

Apart from the short validity, Dubai expat Abhishek Nair also faced visa processing delays.

He and his family had to wait for nearly a month to find out they got a visa for seven days.

“We had applied to the Netherlands. It took nearly four weeks for them to give us a visa that’s valid for a week, even though we presented two travel itineraries, one in January and the other in September,” said Mr Nair, who went to a Swiss university.

Syrian passport-holder and UAE resident DA said she had resisted applying for a Schengen visa until now because of the “fear of rejection”.

Her fears, unfortunately, came true after her Schengen visa application at the Spanish embassy was rejected.

She has travelled to New Zealand, US, Turkey, Lebanon and Egypt in the past.

She appealed to the Spanish embassy, because her sister, who had gone through a similar ordeal, got her visa approved after doing so.

“I got a visa for six days – the exact dates of my travel itinerary,” she said, adding that she will have to apply again for her next summer travel, but securing a date will be challenging.

Travel woes

Sana Ahmed, who holds a Pakistan passport and has lived in Dubai for 11 years, said she has struggled to get longer duration on Schengen visas despite providing all the documents and boasting a good travel track record.

"I had requested for a longer validity this year because we've got a few holidays planned, but I got only 6 months.

"I'm in London now, but when I return I have another visa appointment scheduled for August."

She says the visa ordeal makes it tough for her to travel with her husband and child, who are both British passport holders.

“For every Schengen I’ve ever applied for, I’ve only received the visa for the length of the trip,” said Roxy Kairuz, a Dubai resident and South African passport holder.

“My latest Schengen only – through France – has been the only one that I’ve gotten that is longer than the trip applied for – at six months.”

Another Dubai expat and Indian passport holder, PA, said the discrepancy in how the visa validity is determined makes the ordeal frustrating.

“After having travelled every year to different parts of the world, and having a valid 10-year UK and US visa, there’s still no guarantee that I’ll get a longer validity on my Schengen visa.

“This makes it tough to plan holidays to Europe.”

VFS Global, which facilitates the Schengen visa process in the UAE, said it was not responsible for the validity period on visas granted to travellers.

"VFS Global has no visibility in the decision-making process, timelines and outcome of decision," said Monaz Billimoria, Regional Head of VFS Global.

Recently, the European Union announced that Indian citizens can be issued long-term, multi-entry visas valid for five years "after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years".

Counting the cost

A recent Schengen Visa report issued by SchengenVisaI Info, an online portal tracking yearly visa application statistics, said that UAE applicants faced a loss of €4.19 million (Dh16.83 million) in 2023 due to rejected Schengen visa applications.

The study states they spent €18.71 (AED 75.02 million) on Schengen visa applications the same year.

Due to the high volume of applications, the waiting time for a Schengen visa appointment can range from weeks to months.

VFS Global urged travellers to start planning their holiday months "as early as possible" because "there's a higher demand this year".

Rishal Mohammed, executive director of travel agency TravelShop in Dubai, said summer months are traditionally busy.

"If anyone wants to travel in summer they must plan at least three to four months in advance. Even when we approach individual embassies they've told us that other than business or medical reasons, no dates will be available for tourism," he said.

Mr Mohammed added that dates are opening up now for end of August, September and October, allowing travellers to plan for UAE National Day holidays or winter break.
